The paper presents late time cosmology in $f(Q,T)$ gravity where the dark energy is purely geometric in nature. We start by employing a well motivated $f(Q,T)$ gravity model, $f(Q,T)=mQ^{n}+bT$ where $m,n$ and $b$ are model parameters. Additionally we also assume the universe to be dominated by pressure-less matter which yields a power law type scale factor of the form $% a(t)=c_{2}(At+c_{1})^{\frac{1}{A}}$, where $A=\dfrac{3(8π+b)}{n(16π+3b)% }$ and $c_{1}$ \& $c_{2}$ are just integration constants. To investigate the cosmological viability of the model, constraints on the model parameters were imposed from the updated 57 points of Hubble data sets and 580 points of union 2.1 compilation supernovae data sets. We have thoroughly investigated the nature of geometrical dark energy mimicked by the parametrization of $f(Q,T)=mQ^{n}+bT$ with the assistance of statefinder diagnostic in $\{s,r\}$ and $\{q,r\}$ planes and also performed the $Om$ -diagnostic analysis. The present analysis makes it clear-cut that $f(Q,T)$ gravity can be promising in addressing the current cosmic acceleration and therefore a suitable alternative to the dark energy problem. Further studies in other cosmological areas are therefore encouraging to further investigate the viability of $f(Q,T)$ gravity.
Quantum considerations have led many theorists to believe that classical black hole physics is modified not just deep inside black holes but at {\it horizon scales}, or even further outward. The near-horizon regime has just begun to be observationally probed for astrophysical black holes -- both by LIGO, and by the Event Horizon Telescope. This suggests exciting prospects for observational constraints on or discovery of new quantum black hole structure. This paper overviews arguments for certain such structure and these prospects.
In this work, we introduce a bottom-up $F(R)$ gravity reconstruction technique, in which we fix the observational indices and we seek for the $F(R)$ gravity which may realize them. Particularly, as an exemplification of our method, we shall assume that the scalar-to-tensor ratio has a specific form, and from it we shall reconstruct the $F(R)$ gravity that may realize it, focusing on special values of the parameters in order to obtain analytical results. The observational indices we study are compatible with the latest observational data, and we discuss how the functional form of the observatio…
Many alternative theories of gravity screens a Yukawa-type potential. This article shows Keplerian-type parametrization as a solution of Yukawa type potential accurate equations of motion for two non-spinning compact objects moving in an eccentric orbit. A bound from the solar system is presented.
The cross-correlation between the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect and the large scale structure (LSS) is a powerful tool to constrain dark energy and alternative theories of gravity. In this paper, we obtain observational constraints on kinetic gravity braiding from the ISW-LSS cross-correlation. We find that the late-time ISW effect in the kinetic gravity braiding model anti-correlates with large scale structures in a wide range of parameters, which clearly demonstrates how one can distinguish modified gravity theories from the LCDM model using the ISW effect. In addition to the analysis …
The ghost free massive gravity modified Friedmann equations at cosmic scale and provided an explanation of cosmic acceleration without dark energy. We analyzed the cosmological solutions of the massive gravity in detail and confronted the cosmological model with current observational data. We found that the model parameters $α_3$ and $α_4$ which are the coefficients of the third and fourth order nonlinear interactions cannot be constrained by current data at the background level. The mass of graviton is found to be the order of current Hubble constant if $α_3=α_4=0$, and the mass of graviton c…
We indicate the progress of experimental gravity, present an outlook in this field, and summarise the Observational/Experimental Parallel Session together with a related plenary talk on gravitational waves of the 2nd LeCosPA Symposium.
Einstein-aether theory is general relativity coupled to a dynamical unit timelike vector field. A brief review of current theoretical understanding and observational constraints on the four coupling parameters of the theory is given.
In this work we study one of the most appealing string theory-motivated models, we present a tachyonic inflationary model in the recently proposed symmetric teleparallel framework, and examine constraints on tachyon inflation with the exponential potential along with the reheating for a chosen $f(Q)$ gravity model. Considering a reheating phase parametrized by a number of e-folds $N_{re},$ a temperature $T_{re}$, and an equation of state $ω_{re}$, we relate the reheating parameters as functions of the exponential tachyon potential, $f(Q)$ model, and\ the spectral index $n_{s}$ parameters. We a…
The standard formulation of general relativity fails to describe some recent interests in the universe. It impels us to go beyond the standard formulation of gravity. The $f(Q)$ gravity theory is an interesting modified theory of gravity, where the gravitational interaction is driven by the nonmetricity $Q$. This study aims to examine the cosmological models with the presence of bulk viscosity effect in the cosmological fluid within the framework of $f(Q)$ gravity. We construct three bulk viscous fluid models, i.e. (i) for the first model, we assuming the Lagrangian $f(Q)$ as linear dependence…
We explore the hypothesis that the set of symmetries enjoyed by the theory that describes gravity is not the full group of diffeomorphisms Diff(M), as in General Relativity, but a maximal subgroup of it, TransverseDiff(M), with its elements having a jacobian equal to unity; at the infinitesimal level, the parameter describing the coordinate change, xi^mu (x), is transverse, i.e., partial_mu(xi^mu)=0. Incidentally, this is the smaller symmetry one needs to propagate consistently a graviton, which is a great theoretical motivation for considering these theories. Also, the determinant of the metr…
We consider a new set of effects arising from the quantum gravity corrections to the propagation of fields, associated with fluctuations of the spacetime geometry. Using already existing experimental data, we can put bounds on these effects that are more stringent by several orders of magnitude than those expected to be obtained in astrophysical observations. In fact these results can be already interpreted as questioning the whole scenario of linear (in $l_P$) corrections to the dispersion relations for free fields in Lorentz violating theories.
We consider the uncertainty in the arm length of an interferometer due to metric fluctuations from the quantum nature of gravity, proposing a concrete microscopic model of energy fluctuations in holographic degrees of freedom on the surface bounding a causally connected region of spacetime. In our model, fluctuations longitudinal to the beam direction accumulate in the infrared and feature strong long distance correlation in the transverse direction. This leads to a signal that could be observed in a gravitational wave interferometer. We connect the positional uncertainty principle arising fro…
A field kinetic coupling with the Einstein tensor leads to a gravitationally enhanced friction during inflation, by which even steep potentials with theoretically natural model parameters can drive cosmic acceleration. In the presence of this non-minimal derivative coupling we place observational constraints on a number of representative inflationary models such as chaotic inflation, inflation with exponential potentials, natural inflation, and hybrid inflation. We show that most of the models can be made compatible with the current observational data mainly due to the suppressed tensor-to-sca…
Quantum gravity is sometimes considered as a kind of metaphysical speculation. In this review, we show that, although still extremely difficult to reach, observational signatures can in fact be expected. The early universe is an invaluable laboratory to probe "Planck scale physics". Focusing on Loop Quantum Gravity as one of the best candidate for a non-perturbative and background-independant quantization of gravity, we detail some expected features.
In this paper, we study the $f(T,\mathcal{T})$ gravity model in the presence of the bulk viscosity by the flat-FRW metric. The field equation is obtained by teleparallel gravity with tetrad field. The universe components are considered as matter and dark energy which the dark energy component associates from the viscous $f(T,\mathcal{T})$ gravity. After calculating the Friedmann equations, we obtain the energy density, the pressure and the EoS of dark energy in terms of the redshift parameter. Afterward, we plot the corresponding cosmological parameters versus the redshift parameter and examin…
We use observational data from Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), along with requirements of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), to constrain the running parameter $λ$ of Horava-Lifshitz gravity, which determines the flow between the Ultra-Violet and the Infra-Red. We consider both the detailed and non-detailed balance versions of the gravitational sector, and we include the matter and radiation sectors. Allowing for variation of all the parameters of the theory, we construct the likelihood contours and we conclude that in $1σ$ con…
We study cosmological dynamics and late-time evolution of an extended induced gravity braneworld scenario. In this scenario, curvature effects are taken into account via the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action and there is also a Chaplygin gas component on the brane. We show that this model mimics an effective phantom behavior in a relatively wider range of redshifts than previously formulated models. It also provides a natural framework for smooth crossing of the phantom-divide line due to presence of the Chaplygin gas component on the brane. We confront the model with observational data fro…
We use observations related to the variation of fundamental constants, in order to impose constraints on the viable and most used $f(T)$ gravity models. In particular, for the fine-structure constant we use direct measurements obtained by different spectrographic methods, while for the effective Newton's constant we use a model-dependent reconstruction, using direct observational Hubble parameter data, in order to investigate its temporal evolution. We consider two $f(T)$ models and we quantify their deviation from $Λ$CDM cosmology through a sole parameter. Our analysis reveals that this param…
Some models of modified gravity and their observational manifestations are considered. It is shown, that gravitating systems with mass density rising with time evolve to a singular state with infinite curvature scalar. The universe evolution during the radiation dominated epoch is studied in $R^2$-extended gravity theory. Particle production rate by the oscillating curvature is calculated. Possible implications of the model for cosmological creation of non-thermal dark matter are discussed.
In this paper, a modified version of the hydrostatic equilibrium equation based on the mimetic gravity in the presence of perfect fluid is revisited. By using the different known equation of states, the structural properties of neutron stars are investigated in general relativity and mimetic gravity. Comparing the obtained results, we show that, unlike general relativity, we can find the appropriate equation of states that support observational data in the context of mimetic gravity. We also find that the results of relativistic mean-field-based models of the equation of states are in better a…
We derive the main classical gravitational tests for a recently found vacuum solution with spin and dilation charges in the framework of Metric-Affine gauge theory of gravity. Using the results of the perihelion precession of the star S2 by the GRAVITY collaboration and the gravitational redshift of Sirius B white dwarf we constrain the corrections provided by the torsion and nonmetricity fields for these effects.
We use the local value of the Hubble constant recently measured with 2.4% precision, as well as the latest compilation of cosmic chronometers data, together with standard probes such as Supernovae Type Ia and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation distance measurements, in order to impose constraints on the viable and most used f(T) gravity models, where T is the torsion scalar in teleparallel gravity. In particular, we consider three f(T) models with two parameters, out of which one is independent, and we quantify their deviation from $Λ$CDM cosmology through a sole parameter. Our analysis reveals that …
We use the recently released cosmic chronometer data and the latest measured value of the local Hubble parameter, combined with the latest joint light curves of Supernovae Type Ia, and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation distance measurements, in order to impose constraints on the viable and most used $f(R)$ gravity models. We consider four $f(R)$ models, namely the Hu-Sawicki, the Starobinsky, the Tsujikawa, and the exponential one, and we parametrize them introducing a distortion parameter $b$ that quantifies the deviation from $Λ$CDM cosmology. Our analysis reveals that a small but non-zero deviati…
Research during the last decade demonstrates that effects originating on the Planck scale are currently being tested in multiple observational contexts. In this review we discuss quantum gravity phenomenological models and their possible links to loop quantum gravity. Particle frameworks, including kinematic models, broken and deformed Poincaré symmetry, non-commutative geometry, relative locality and generalized uncertainty principle, and field theory frameworks, including Lorentz violating operators in effective field theory and non-commutative field theory, are discussed. The arguments rela…
This short review is intended as a colloquium-level summary, for the Snowmass 2021 process, on recent theoretical results on infrared observables in quantum gravity. We rely on simple physical arguments, most notably a random walk intuition, to show how effects of quantum gravity in the ultraviolet (at the Planck length $\ell_p \approx 10^{-35} \mbox{ m}$) may integrate into the infrared when the large measurement length scale $L$ enters into the observable. A quantum uncertainty at lightsheet horizons would give rise to an accumulated effect of size $δL^2 \simeq \ell_p L/4 π$. We discuss how …
We consider the family of singularity-free rotating black hole solutions in Einstein's conformal gravity found in Bambi, Modesto & Rachwal (2017) and we constrain the value of the conformal parameter $L$ from the analysis of a 30 ks NuSTAR observation of the stellar-mass black hole in GS 1354-645 during its outburst in 2015. Our new constraint is much stronger than that found in previous work. Here we obtain $L/M < 0.12$ (99% confidence level, statistical uncertainty only).
Recently there was an extensive discussion of Higgs inflation in the theory with the potential λ(ϕ^2-v^2)^2 and nonminimal coupling to gravity {ξ\over 2}ϕ^2R, for ξ>> 1 and v<< 1. We extend this investigation to the theories m^2ϕ^2 and λ(ϕ^2-v^2)^2 with arbitrary values of ξand v and describe implementation of these models in supergravity. We analyze observational consequences of these models and find a surprising coincidence of the inflationary predictions of the model λ(ϕ^2-v^2)^2 with ξ<0 in the limit |ξ|v^2 \to 1 with the predictions of the Higgs inflation scenario for ξ>> 1.
The present work deals with cosmological solutions in $f(R,T)$ gravity theory for perfect fluid with constant equation of state ($ω$). For a viable cosmological solution $ω$ is restricted to $ω<\dfrac{1}{3}$. Also depending on the sign of an arbitrary constant one has two possible solutions: a finite universe model and an ever expanding model of the universe. Field theoretic description of the model and possibility of a ghost scalar field has been studied. Also, an equivalence with modified Chaplygin gas has been shown. Finally, from the observational data it has been concluded that this model…
Crucial observational tests of gravity physics are reviewed. Such tests are able to clarify the key question on the nature of gravitational interaction: is gravity the curvature of space? or is gravity a matter field in Minkowski flat space as other physical forces? Up to now all actually performed experiments do not allow to distinguish between these two alternatives in gravity physics. The existence of well-defined positive energy-momentum of the gravity field in Poincare-Feynman approach leads to radical changes in gravity physics and cosmology which may be tested by laboratory experiments …
In this article, the bulk viscosity is introduced in a modified gravity model. The gravitational action has a general $f(R,T)$ form, where $R$ and $ T $ are the curvature scalar and the trace of energy momentum tensor respectively. An effective equation of state (EoS) has been investigated in the cosmological evolution with bulk viscosity. In the present scenario, the Hubble parameter which has a scaling relation with the redshift can be obtained generically. The role of deceleration parameter $q$ and equation of state parameter $ω$ is discussed to explain the late-time accelerating expansion …
Gravitomagnetism characterize phenomena in the weak field limit within the context of rotating systems. These are mainly manifested in the geodetic and Lense-Thirring effects. The geodetic effect describes the precession of the spin of a gyroscope in orbit about a massive static central object, while the Lense-Thirring effect expresses the analogous effect for the precession of the orbit about a rotating source. In this work, we explore these effects in the framework of Teleparallel Gravity and investigate how these effects may impact recent and future missions. We find that teleparallel theor…
We study the cosmological predictions of two recently proposed non-local modifications of General Relativity. Both models have the same number of parameters as $Λ$CDM, with a mass parameter $m$ replacing the cosmological constant. We implement the cosmological perturbations of the non-local models into a modification of the CLASS Boltzmann code, and we make a full comparison to CMB, BAO and supernova data. We find that the non-local models fit these datasets as well as $Λ$CDM. For both non-local models parameter estimation using Planck+JLA+BAO data gives a value of $H_0$ higher than in $Λ$CDM,…
Several alternative ways to quantize gravitational interactions seem to indicate that gravity at short distances is effectively two-dimensional. If this were true, and the energy scale at which the dimensional transition occurs is of the order of the inflationary one, it is reasonable to investigate eventual signatures in the primordial perturbation spectra. In this paper we look at this possibility by assuming that the inflationary era was preceded by an effectively two-dimensional evolution of the Universe. We model the transition with a mode matching and we show that, in this case, no obser…
In this work, we consider an extension of symmetric teleparallel gravity, namely, $f(Q)$ gravity, where the fundamental block to describe spacetime is the nonmetricity, $Q$. Within this formulation of gravitation, we perform an observational analysis of several modified $f(Q)$ models using the redshift approach, where the $f(Q)$ Lagrangian is reformulated as an explicit function of the redshift, $f(z)$. Various different polynomial parameterizations of $f(z)$ are proposed, including new terms which would allow for deviations from the $Λ$CDM model. Given a variety of observational probes, such …

We study different manifestations of the speed of light in theories of gravity where metric and connection are regarded as independent fields. We find that for a generic gravity theory in a frame with locally vanishing affine connection, the usual degeneracy between different manifestations of the speed of light is broken. In particular, the space-time causal structure constant ($c_{ST}$) may become variable in that local frame. For theories of the form $f(R,R^{μν} R_{μν})$, this variation in $c_{ST}$ has an impact on the definition of the luminosity distance (and distance modulus), which can …
We investigate the descriptions for the observables of inflationary models, in particular, the spectral index of curvature perturbations, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the running of the spectral index, in the framework of perfect fluid models and $F(R)$ gravity theories through the reconstruction methods. Furthermore, the perfect fluid and $F(R)$ gravity descriptions of inflation are compared with the recent cosmological observations such as the Planck satellite and BICEP2 experiment. It is demonstrated with explicit examples that perfect fluid may lead to the inflationary universe consiste…
We obtain the general cosmological evolution equations for a classically consistent theory of bimetric gravity. Their analytic solutions are demonstrated to generically allow for a cosmic evolution starting out from a matter dominated FLRW universe while relaxing towards a de Sitter (anti-de Sitter) phase at late cosmic time. In particular, we examine a subclass of models which contain solutions that are able to reproduce the expansion history of the cosmic concordance model inspite of the nonlinear couplings of the two metrics. This is demonstrated explicitly by fitting these models to observ…
We study the observational constraints on the exponential gravity model of f(R)=-beta*Rs(1-e^(-R/Rs)). We use the latest observational data including Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP) Union2 compilation, Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) and Seven-Year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP7) in our analysis. From these observations, we obtain a lower bound on the model parameter beta at 1.27 (95% CL) but no appreciable upper bound. The constraint on the present matter density parameter is 0.245< Omega_m^0<0.311 (95% CL). W…
Ghost-free bimetric gravity is a theory of two interacting spin-2 fields, one massless and one massive, in addition to the standard matter particles and fields, thereby generalizing Einstein's theory of general relativity. To parameterize the theory, we use five observables with specific physical interpretations. We present, for the first time, observational constraints on these parameters that: (i) apply to the full theory, (ii) are consistent with a working screening mechanism (i.e., restoring general relativity locally), (iii) exhibit a continuous, real-valued background cosmology (without …
We investigate the radiative stability of Horndeski scalar-tensor theories with luminally propagating gravitational waves (as extensively discussed in the wake of GW170817) and show that in general there is a tension between obtaining observable deviations from General Relativity (GR) in cosmology and the requirement of radiative stability. Using this as a constraint, we discuss the subsets of theories that are capable of evading this conclusion and yielding observable, radiatively stable departures from GR. We find several classes of theories that can do so, recovering known cases and identif…
We compare observational data of growth rate with the prediction by Galileon theory. For the same value of the energy density parameter $Ω_{m,0}$, the growth rate in Galileon models is enhanced compared with the $Λ$CDM case, due to the enhancement of Newton's constant. The smaller $Ω_{m,0}$ is, the more suppressed growth rate is. Hence the best fit value of $Ω_{m,0}$ in the Galileon model is 0.16 from only the growth rate data, which is considerably smaller than such value obtained from observations of supernovae Ia, the cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillations. This result…
Delta Gravity is a gravitational model based on an extension of General Relativity given by a new symmetry called $\tildeδ$. In this model, new matter fields are added to the original matter fields, motivated by the additional symmetry. We call them $\tildeδ$ matter fields. This model predicts an accelerating Universe without the need to introduce a cosmological constant. In this work, we study the Delta Gravity prediction about the scalar CMB TT power spectrum using an analytical hydrodynamical approach. To fit the Planck satellite's data with the DG model, we used a Markov Chain Monte Carlo …
We present a comprehensive and updated comparison with cosmological observations of two non-local modifications of gravity previously introduced by our group, the so called RR and RT models. We implement the background evolution and the cosmological perturbations of the models in a modified Boltzmann code, using CLASS. We then test the non-local models against the {\em Planck} 2015 TT, TE, EE and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing data, isotropic and anisotropic Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) data, JLA supernovae, $H_0$ measurements and growth rate data, and we perform Bayesian pa…
The lack of rotating black hole models, which are typically found in nature, in loop quantum gravity (LQG) substantially hinders the progress of testing LQG from observations. Starting with a non-rotating LQG black hole as a seed metric, we construct a rotating spacetime using the revised Newman-Janis algorithm. The rotating solution is non-singular everywhere and it reduces to the Kerr black hole asymptotically. In different regions of the parameter space, the solution describes i) a wormhole without event horizon (which, we show, is almost ruled out by observations), ii) a black hole with a …
The self-dual spacetime was derived from the mini-superspace approach, based on the polymerization quantization procedure in loop quantum gravity (LQG). Its deviation from the Schwarzschild spacetime is characterized by the polymeric function $P$, purely due to the geometric quantum effects from LQG. In this paper, we consider the observational constraints imposed on $P$ by using the solar system experiments and observations. For this purpose, we calculate in detail the effects of $P$ on astronomical observations conducted in the Solar system, including the deflection angle of light by the Sun…
We discuss possible observational manifestations of static, spherically symmetric solutions of a class of multidimensional theories of gravity, which includes the low energy limits of supergravities and superstring theories as special cases. We discuss the choice of a physical conformal frame to be used for the description of observations. General expressions are given for (i) the Eddington parameters $β$ and $γ$, characterizing the post-Newtonian gravitational field of a central body, (ii) p-brane black hole temperatures in different conformal frames and (iii) the Coulomb law modified by extr…
