We compare observational data of growth rate with the prediction by Galileon theory. For the same value of the energy density parameter $Ω_{m,0}$, the growth rate in Galileon models is enhanced compared with the $Λ$CDM case, due to the enhancement of Newton's constant. The smaller $Ω_{m,0}$ is, the more suppressed growth rate is. Hence the best fit value of $Ω_{m,0}$ in the Galileon model is 0.16 from only the growth rate data, which is considerably smaller than such value obtained from observations of supernovae Ia, the cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillations. This result seems to be qualitatively the same in most of the generalized Galileon models. We also find the upper limit of the Brans-Dicke parameter to be $ω< -40$, from the growth rate data. More and better growth rate data are required to distinguish between dark energy and modified gravity.
We studied the cosmological constraints on the Galileon gravity obtained from observational data of the growth rate of matter density perturbations, the supernovae Ia (SN Ia), the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). For the same value of the energy density parameter of matter $Ω_{m,0}$, the growth rate $f$ in Galileon models is enhanced, relative to the $Λ$CDM case, because of an increase in Newton's constant. The smaller $Ω_{m,0}$ is, the more growth rate is suppressed. Therefore, the best fit value of $Ω_{m,0}$ in the Galileon model, based only the grow…
We study the cosmology of a covariant Galileon field with five covariant Lagrangians and confront this theory with the most recent cosmological probes: the type Ia supernovae data (Constitution and Union2 sets), cosmic microwave background (WMAP7) and the baryon acoustic oscillations (SDSS7). In the Galileon cosmology with a late-time de Sitter attractor, there is a tracker that attracts solutions with different initial conditions to a common trajectory. Including the cosmic curvature K, we place observational constraints on two distinct cases: (i) the tracker, and (ii) the generic solutions t…
The Galileon model is a tensor-scalar theory of gravity which explains the late acceleration of the Universe expansion with no instabilities and recovers General Relativity in the strong field limit. Most constraints obtained so far on Galileon model parameters from cosmological data were derived for the limited subset of tracker solutions and reported tensions between the model and data. This paper presents the first exploration of the general solution of the Galileon model, which is confronted against recent cosmological data for both background observables and linear perturbations, using Mo…
A scalar-tensor theory of gravity can be made not only to account for the current cosmic acceleration, but also to satisfy solar-system and laboratory constraints, by introducing a non-linear derivative interaction for the scalar field. Such an additional scalar degree of freedom is called "Galileon". The basic idea is inspired by the DGP braneworld, but one can construct a ghost-free model that admits a self-accelerating solution. We perform a fully relativistic analysis of linear perturbations in Galileon cosmology. Although the Galileon model can mimic the background evolution of standard $…
In this paper, we examine the cosmological viability of a light mass galileon field consistent with local gravity constraints. The minimal, L_3=\Boxϕ(\partial_μϕ)^2, massless galileon field requires an additional term in order to give rise to a viable ghost free late time acceleration of Universe. The desired cosmological dynamics can either be achieved by incorporating an additional terms in the action such as (L_4,L_5) - the higher order galileon Lagrangians or by considering a light mass field a la galileon field potential. We analyse the second possibility and find that: (1) The model prod…
In this paper we examine the cosmological consequences of fourth order Galileon gravity. We carry out detailed investigations of the underlying dynamics and demonstrate the stability of one de Sitter phase. The stable de Sitter phase contains a Galileon field $π$ which is an increasing function of time (\dotπ>0). Using the required suppression of the fifth force, supernovae, BAO and CMB data, we constrain parameters of the model. We find that the $π$ matter coupling parameter $β$ is constrained to small numerical values such that $β$<0.02. We also show that the parameters of the third and four…
As an extension of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model, the Galileon theory has been proposed to explain the "self-accelerating problem" and "ghost instability problem". In this Paper, we extend the Galileon theory by considering a non-minimally coupled Galileon scalar with gravity. The statefinder analysis, $Om(z)$ diagnostic and constraint the model parameters have been investigate , we find $Ω_\text{m0}=0.263_{-0.031}^{+0.031}$, $n=1.53_{-0.37}^{+0.21}$ (at the $95\%$ confidence level) with $χ^2_{\text{min}}=473.376$. Further we show that due to the SNe Ia + BAO data ,our model behaves like…
We study the evolution of matter density perturbations in Galileon cosmology where the late-time cosmic acceleration can be realized by a field kinetic energy. We obtain full perturbation equations at linear order in the presence of five covariant Lagrangians ${cal L}_i$ ($i=1,...,5$) satisfying a Galilean symmetry in the flat space-time. The equations for a matter perturbation as well as an effective gravitational potential are derived under a quasi-static approximation on sub-horizon scales. This approximation can reproduce full numerical solutions with high accuracy for the wavelengths rele…
We study a dark energy cubic bi-Galileons field model based on truncation of the recently proposed generalized covariant multi-Galileons model. We investigate the cosmological dynamic of the model by the theory of dynamical systems through the analysis of the properties of the fixed points in each cosmological epoch. We show the existence of two tracker solutions, one of which is that of the cubic single Galileon model and the other solution is the signature of the second Galileon field. Exploiting the competition between the two Galileon fields, we find a dark energy solution that avoids the …
The growth rate of matter density perturbations has been measured from redshift-space distortion (RSD) in the galaxy power spectrum. We constrain the model parameter space for representative modified gravity models to explain the dark energy problem, by using the recent data of f_m(z)sigma_8(z) at the redshifts z = 0.06--0.8 measured by WiggleZ, SDSS LRG, BOSS, and 6dFGRS. We first test the Hu-Sawicki's f(R) dark energy model, and find that only the parameter region close to the standard Lambda Cold Dark Matter (Lambda-CDM) model is allowed (lambda > 12 and 5 for n = 1.5 and 2, respectively, a…
We use the latest CMB data from Planck, together with BAO measurements, to constrain the full parameter space of Galileon gravity. We constrain separately the three main branches of the theory known as the Cubic, Quartic and Quintic models, and find that all yield a very good fit to these data. Unlike in $Λ{\rm CDM}$, the Galileon model constraints are compatible with local determinations of the Hubble parameter and predict nonzero neutrino masses at over $5σ$ significance. We also identify that the low-$l$ part of the CMB lensing spectrum may be able to distinguish between $Λ{\rm CDM}$ and Ga…
We study models of late-time cosmic acceleration in terms of scalar-tensor theories generalized to include a certain class of non-linear derivative interaction of the scalar field. The non-linear effect suppress the scalar-mediated force at short distances to pass solar-system tests of gravity. It is found that the expansion history until today is almost indistinguishable from that of the $Λ$CDM model or some (phantom) dark energy models, but the fate of the universe depends clearly on the model parameter. The growth index of matter density perturbations is computed to show that its past asymp…
Galileon gravity is a robust theoretical alternative to general relativity with a cosmological constant for explaining cosmic acceleration, with interesting properties such as having second order field equations and a shift symmetry. While either its predictions for the cosmic expansion or growth histories can approach standard ΛCDM, we demonstrate the incompatibility of both doing so simultaneously. Already current observational constraints can severely disfavor an entire class of Galileon gravity models that do not couple directly to matter, ruling them out as an alternative to ΛCDM.
The Galileon model is a modified gravity theory that may provide an explanation for the accelerated expansion of the Universe. This model does not suffer from instabilities or ghost problems (normally associated with higher-order derivative theories), restores local General Relativity -- thanks to the Vainshtein screening effect -- and predicts late time acceleration of the expansion. In this paper, we derive a new definition of the Galileon parameters that allows us to avoid having to choose initial conditions for the Galileon field, and then test this model against precise measurements of th…
The Galileon model is a modified gravity model that can explain the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe. In a previous work, we derived experimental constraints on the Galileon model with no explicit coupling to matter and showed that this model agrees with the most recent cosmological data. In the context of braneworld constructions or massive gravity, the Galileon model exhibits a disformal coupling to matter, which we study in this paper. After comparing our constraints on the uncoupled model with recent studies, we extend the analysis framework to the disformally coupled Galile…
The extended Galileon models possess tracker solutions with de Sitter attractors along which the dark energy equation of state is constant during the matter-dominated epoch, i.e. w_DE = -1-s, where s is a positive constant. Even with this phantom equation of state there are viable parameter spaces in which the ghosts and Laplacian instabilities are absent. Using the observational data of the supernovae type Ia, the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and baryon acoustic oscillations, we place constraints on the tracker solutions at the background level and find that the parameter s is constrain…
In this paper we study the evolution of a spherical matter overdensity in the context of the recently introduced Galileon field theory. Our analysis considers the complete covariant Lagrangian in four dimensions. This theory is composed by a potential and a standard kinetic term, a cubic kinetic term and two additional terms that include the coupling between the Galileon and the metric, to preserve the original properties of Galileons also in curved space-times. Here we extend previous studies, which considered both the quintessence and the cubic terms, by focussing on the role of the last two…
We revisit the cosmological dynamics of the cubic Galileon model in light of the recently proposed model-independent analyses of the Pantheon supernova data. At the background level, it is shown to be compatible with data and preferred over standard quintessence models. Furthermore, the model is shown to be consistent with the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture (as well as other Swampland conjectures). It is shown that for the given parametrization, the model fails to satisfy the bounds on the reconstructed growth index derived from the Pantheon data set at the level of linear~perturbations…
A probability of distinguishing between $Λ$CDM model and modified gravity is studied by using the future observations for the growth rate of cosmic structure (Euclid redshift survey). Adopting extended DGP model, Kinetic Gravity Braiding model, and Galileon model as modified gravity, we compare predicted cosmic growth rate by models to the mock observational data. The growth rate $fσ_8$ in the original DGP model is suppressed compared with the $Λ$CDM case, for the same value of the current density parameter of matter $Ω_{m,0}$, because of the suppression of effective gravitational constant. In…
We study a particular Galileon inflation in the light of Planck2015 observational data in order to constraint the model parameter space. We study the spectrum of the primordial modes of the density perturbations by expanding the action up to the second order in perturbations. Then we pursue by expanding the action up to the third order and find the three point correlation functions to find the amplitude of the non-Gaussianity of the primordial perturbations in this setup. We study the amplitude of the non-Gaussianity both in equilateral and orthogonal configurations and test the model with rec…
We study the cosmology of Galileon modified gravity models in the linear perturbation regime. We derive the fully covariant and gauge invariant perturbed field equations using two different methods, which give consistent results, and solve them using a modified version of the {\tt CAMB} code. We find that, in addition to modifying the background expansion history and therefore shifting the positions of the acoustic peaks in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum, the Galileon field can cluster strongly from early times, and causes the Weyl gravitational potential to grow, rather …
We place observational constraints on the Galileon ghost condensate model, a dark energy proposal in cubic-order Horndeski theories consistent with the gravitational-wave event GW170817. The model extends the covariant Galileon by taking an additional higher-order field derivative $X^2$ into account. This allows for the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}$ to access the region $-2<w_{\rm DE}<-1$ without ghosts. Indeed, this peculiar evolution of $w_{\rm DE}$ is favored over that of the cosmological constant $Λ$ from the joint data analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, …
The Galileon theory belongs to the class of modified gravity models that can explain the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe. In previous works, cosmological constraints on the Galileon model were derived, both in the uncoupled case and with a disformal coupling of the Galileon field to matter. There, we showed that these models agree with the most recent cosmological data. In this work, we used updated cosmological data sets to derive new constraints on Galileon models, including the case of a constant conformal Galileon coupling to matter. We also explored the tracker solution of…
We investigate the cosmological properties of Galileon models with positive kinetic terms. We include both conformal and disformal couplings to matter and focus on constraints on the theory that arise because of these couplings. The disformal coupling to baryonic matter is extremely constrained by astrophysical and particle physics effects. The disformal coupling to photons induces a cosmological variation of the speed of light and therefore distortions of the Cosmic Microwave Background spectrum which are known to be very small. The conformal coupling to baryons leads to a variation of partic…
The reconstruction procedure, which has proven quite useful to obtain viable models of the universe evolution, is here employed in order to construct inflation models. It has the advantages that it ensures full consistency with astronomical observations and that it allows to evaluate the stability of the resulting cosmological model quite easily. The reconstruction for two different types of Lagrangian, included in the frame of G-inflation, is carried out in detail and explicit models for each Lagrangian are constructed. As a bonus for having used this reconstruction formalism, the final model…
We present a detailed study of the collapse of a spherical matter overdensity and the non-linear growth of large scale structures in the Galileon ghost condensate (GGC) model. This model is an extension of the cubic covariant Galileon (G3) which includes a field derivative of type $(\nabla_μϕ\nabla^μϕ)^2$ in the Lagrangian. We find that the cubic term activates the modifications in the main physical quantities whose time evolution is then strongly affected by the additional term. Indeed, the GGC model shows largely mitigated effects in the linearised critical density contrast, non-linear effec…
We show that, in the presence of massive neutrinos, the Galileon gravity model provides a very good fit to the current CMB temperature, CMB lensing and BAO data. This model, which we dub $ν \rm{Galileon}$, when assuming its stable attractor background solution, contains the same set of free parameters as $Λ\rm{CDM}$, although it leads to different expansion dynamics and nontrivial gravitational interactions. The data provide compelling evidence ($\gtrsim 6σ$) for nonzero neutrino masses, with $Σm_ν\gtrsim 0.4\ {\rm eV}$ at the $2σ$ level. Upcoming precision terrestrial measurements of the abso…
It is shown that a disformally coupled theory in which the gravitational sector has the Einstein-Hilbert form is equivalent to a quartic DBI Galileon Lagrangian, possessing non-linear higher derivative interactions, and hence allowing for the Vainshtein effect. This Einstein Frame description considerably simplifies the dynamical equations and highlights the role of the different terms. The study of highly dense, non-relativistic environments within this description unravels the existence of a disformal screening mechanism, while the study of static vacuum configurations reveals the existence …

Positivity bounds - constraints on any low-energy effective field theory imposed by the fundamental axioms of unitarity, causality and locality in the UV - have recently been used to constrain various effective field theories relevant for cosmology. However, to date most of these bounds have assumed that there is a single Lorentz-invariant vacuum in which all fields have zero expectation value and in many cosmologically relevant models this is not the case. We explore ways to overcome this limitation by investigating a simple example model, the covariant Galileon, which possesses a one-paramet…
In 'modified' gravity the observed acceleration of the universe is explained by changing the gravitational force law or the number of degrees of freedom in the gravitational sector. Both possibilities can be tested by measurements of cosmological structure formation. In this paper we elaborate the details of such tests using the Galileon model as a case study. We pay attention to the possibility that each new degree of freedom may have stochastically independent initial conditions, generating different types of potential well in the early universe and breaking complete correlation between dens…
Modified gravity theories capable of genuine self-acceleration typically invoke a galileon scalar which mediates a long range force, but is screened by the Vainshtein mechanism on small scales. In such theories, non-relativistic stars carry the full scalar charge (proportional to their mass), while black holes carry none. Thus, for a galaxy free-falling in some external gravitational field, its central massive black hole is expected to lag behind the stars. To look for this effect, and to distinguish it from other astrophysical effects, one can correlate the gravitational pull from the surroun…
We model the linear and nonlinear growth of large scale structure in the Cubic Galileon gravity model, by running a suite of N-body cosmological simulations using the {\tt ECOSMOG} code. Our simulations include the Vainshtein screening effect, which reconciles the Cubic Galileon model with local tests of gravity. In the linear regime, the amplitude of the matter power spectrum increases by $\sim 25%$ with respect to the standard $Λ$CDM model today. The modified expansion rate accounts for $\sim 20%$ of this enhancement, while the fifth force is responsible for only $\sim 5%$. This is because t…
In this work we will test an alternative model of gravity belonging to the large family of galileon models. It is characterized by an intrinsic breaking of the Vainshtein mechanism inside large astrophysical objects, thus having possibly detectable observational signatures. We will compare theoretical predictions from this model with the observed total mass profile for a sample of clusters of galaxies. The profiles are derived using two complementary tools: X-ray hot intra-cluster gas dynamics, and strong and weak gravitational lensing. We find that a dependence with the dynamical internal sta…
Currently there is a variety of scalar field models to explain the late time acceleration of the Universe. This includes the standard canonical and non-canonical scalar field models together with recently proposed Galileon scalar field models. One can divide all these scalar field models into two broad categories, namely the thawing and the tracker class. In this work we investigate the evidence for these models with the presently available observational data using the Bayesian approach. We use the Generalized Chaplygin Gas (GCG) parametrization for dark energy equation of state (EoS) as it gi…
The string theory swampland proposes that there is no UV-completion for an effective field theory with an exact (metastable) de Sitter vacua, thereby ruling out standard $Λ$CDM cosmology if the conjecture is taken seriously. The swampland criteria have also been shown to be in sharp tension with quintessence models under current and forthcoming observational bounds. As a logical next step, we introduce higher derivative self-interactions in the low-energy effective Lagrangian and show that one can satisfy observational constraints as well as the swampland criteria for some specific models. In …
Scalar-tensor theories of gravity generally violate the strong equivalence principle, namely compact objects have a suppressed coupling to the scalar force, causing them to fall slower. A black hole is the extreme example where such a coupling vanishes, i.e. black hole has no scalar hair. Following earlier work, we explore observational scenarios for detecting strong equivalence principle violation, focusing on galileon gravity as an example. For galaxies in-falling towards galaxy clusters, the supermassive black hole can be offset from the galaxy center away from the direction of the cluster.…
We investigate the linear growth function for the large scale structures of the universe considering modified Chaplygin gas as dark energy. Taking into account observational growth data for a given range of redshift from the Wiggle-Z measurements and rms mass fluctuations from Ly-$α$ measurements we numerically analyze cosmological models to constrain the parameters of the MCG. The observational data of Hubble parameter with redshift ($Z$) is also considered. The Wang-Steinhardt ansatz for growth index $γ$ and growth function $f$ (defined as $f=Ω_{m}^γ (a)$) are considered for the numerical an…
In the literature, it was proposed that the growth index $γ$ is useful to distinguish the scenarios of dark energy and modified gravity. In the present work, we consider the constraints on the growth index $γ$ by using the latest observational data. To be model-independent, we use cosmography to describe the cosmic expansion history, and also expand the general $γ(z)$ as a Taylor series with respect to redshift $z$ or $y$-shift, $y=z/(1+z)$. We find that the present value $γ_0=γ(z=0)\simeq 0.42$ (for most of viable $f(R)$ theories) is inconsistent with the latest observational data at high con…
We investigate emergent universe model using recent observational data for the background tests as well as for the growth tests. The background test data comprises of Hubble data, Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data, cosmic microwave background (CMB) shift data, Union compilation data. The observational growth data are obtained from Wiggle-Z measurements and rms mass fluctuations data from Lyman-$α$ measurements at different red shifts. The flat emergent universe model obtained by Mukherjee {\it et. al.} is permitted with a non-linear equation of state (in short, EoS) ($p=Aρ-Bρ^{\frac{1}{2}…
Under the commonly used assumption that clumped objects can be well described by a spherical top-hat matter density profile, we investigate the evolution of the cosmic growth index in clustering dark energy (CDE) scenarios on sub-horizon scales. We show that the evolution of the growth index $γ(z)$ strongly depends on the equation-of-state (EoS) parameter and on the clustering properties of the dark energy (DE) component. Performing a $χ^2$ analysis, we show that CDE models have a better fit to observational growth rate data points with respect to the concordance $Λ$CDM model. We finally deter…

In this study we combine the background and the growth rate data in order to study the ability of the two oscillating dark energy parameterizations, to fit the observational data. Using the likelihood and MCMC method we try to explore the posterior space and put constraints on the free parameters of the models. Based on the values of the well known Akaike and Bayesian information criteria we find that both of oscillating dark energy models considered in this work are disfavored by the combined (background+growth rate) data. Although using the expansion data we can not reject oscillating dark e…
Observational growth rate data had been derived from observations of redshift distortions in galaxy redshift surveys. Here we use the growth rate data to place constraints on the dark energy model parameters. By performing a joint analysis with the Type Ia supernova, baryon acoustic oscillation and cosmic microwave background data, it is found that the growth rate data are useful for improving the constraints. The joint constraints show that the $Λ$CDM model is still in good agreement with current observations, although a time-variant dark energy still cannot be ruled out. It is argued that th…
Modifications of gravity have been considered to model the primordial inflation and the late-time cosmic acceleration. Provided that modified gravity models do not suffer from theoretical instabilities, they must be confronted with observations, not only at the cosmological scales, but also with the local tests of gravity, in the lab and in the Solar System, as well as at the astrophysical scales. Considering in particular sub-classes of the Horndeski gravity, we study their observational predictions at different scales. In order to pass the local tests of gravity while allowing for long-range…
We study observational constraints on a specific dark energy model in the framework of Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi theories, which extends the Galileon ghost condensate (GGC) to the domain of beyond Horndeski theories. In this model, we show that the Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, combined with datasets of baryon acoustic oscillations, supernovae type Ia, and redshift-space distortions, give the tight upper bound $|α_{\rm H}^{(0)}| \le {\cal O}(10^{-6})$ on today's beyond-Horndeski (BH) parameter $α_{\rm H}$. This is mostly attributed to the shift of CMB acoustic peaks ind…
Gravity directs the paths of light rays and the growth of structure. Moreover, gravity on cosmological scales does not simply point down: it accelerates the universal expansion by pulling outward, either due to a highly negative pressure dark energy or an extension of general relativity. We examine methods to test the properties of gravity through cosmological measurements. We then consider specific possibilities for a sound gravitational theory based on the Galileon shift symmetry. The evolution of the laws of gravity from the early universe to the present acceleration to the future fate -- t…
In the present paper, we investigate the linear growth of matter fluctuations based on a concrete model of the projected massive gravity, which is free of the Boulware-Deser ghost and preserves the global Lorentz symmetry. We found that at subhorizon scales, the modification to the linear growth is strongly suppressed even without nonlinear screening of an additional force. In addition, we obtain observational constraints from distance and redshift space distortion measurements and find that there is a parameter region that is consistent both observationally and theoretically.
In this work we investigate the holographic dark energy models with slowly time-varying model parameter defined based on the current Hubble horizon length scale. While the previous studies on the three popular holographic dark energy models defined based on the future event horizon, Ricci scale and Granda-Oliveros IR cutoffs showed that these models cannot fit the observational data [1], in this work we show that the holographic dark energy models with time-varying model parameter defined on the current Hubble radius are well favored by observations. Using the standard $χ^2$ minimization in th…
In this paper, we constrain four time-dependent dark energy (TDDE) models by using the Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO), observational Hubble parameter (OHD) data-sets as well as the single data point from the newest event GW150914. Subsequently, adopting the best fitting values of the model parameters, we apply the original statefinder, statefinder hierarchy, the growth rate of matter perturbations and $Om(z)$ diagnostics to distinguish the TDDE scenarios and the $Λ$CDM scenario from each other. We discover that all the TDDE models and $Λ$CDM model can be dist…
We study cosmological models with modified Chaplygin gas (in short, MCG) to determine observational constraints on its EoS parameters. The observational data of the background and the growth tests are employed. The background test data namely, H(z)-z data, CMB shift parameter, Baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) peak parameter, SN Ia data are considered to study the dynamical aspects of the universe. The growth test data we employ here consists of the linear growth function for the large scale structures of the universe, models are explored assuming MCG as a candidate for dark energy. Conside…
In a model of the late-time cosmic acceleration within the framework of generalized Proca theories, there exists a de Sitter attractor preceded by the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}=-1-s$, where $s$ is a positive constant. We run the Markov-Chain-Monte-Carlo code to confront the model with the observational data of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillations, supernovae type Ia, and local measurements of the Hubble expansion rate for the background cosmological solutions and obtain the bound $s=0.254^{{}+ 0.118}_{{}-0.097}$ at 95% confidence level (CL). The unknown physical nature of the Dark Energy motivates in cosmology the study of modifications of the gravity theory at large distances. One of these types of modifications is to consider gravity theories, generally termed as $f(R)$. In this paper we use observational data to both constrain and test the Starobinsky $f(R)$ model \cite{Starobinsky2007}, using updated measurements from the dynamics of the expansion of the universe, $H(z)$; and the growth rate of cosmic structures, $[fσ_8](z)$, where the distinction between the concordance $Λ$CDM model and modified gravity models $f(R)$ becomes …
We constrain an interacting, holographic dark energy model, first proposed by two of us in [1], with observational data from supernovae, CMB shift, baryon acoustic oscillations, x-rays, and the Hubble rate. The growth function for this model is also studied. The model fits the data reasonably well but still the conventional $Λ$CDM model fares better. Nevertheless, the holographic model greatly alleviates the coincidence problem and shows compatibility at $1σ$ confidence level with the age of the old quasar APM 08279+5255.
Supermassive black holes are found at the centre of massive galaxies. During the growth of these black holes they light up to become visible as active galactic nuclei (AGN) and release extraordinary amounts of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum. This energy is widely believed to regulate the rate of star formation in the black holes' host galaxies via so-called "AGN feedback". However, the details of how and when this occurs remains uncertain from both an observational and theoretical perspective. I review some of the observational results and discuss possible observational signatures …
Spatial variations in the distribution of galaxy luminosities, estimated from redshifts as distance proxies, are correlated with the peculiar velocity field. Comparing these variations with the peculiar velocities inferred from galaxy redshift surveys is a powerful test of gravity and dark energy theories on cosmological scales. Using ~ 2 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ galaxies from the SDSS Data Release 7, we perform this test in the framework of gravitational instability to estimate the normalized growth rate of density perturbations f$σ_{8}$ = 0.37 +/- 0.13 at z ~ 0.1, which is in agreement with the $Λ$…
