We study models of late-time cosmic acceleration in terms of scalar-tensor theories generalized to include a certain class of non-linear derivative interaction of the scalar field. The non-linear effect suppress the scalar-mediated force at short distances to pass solar-system tests of gravity. It is found that the expansion history until today is almost indistinguishable from that of the $Λ$CDM model or some (phantom) dark energy models, but the fate of the universe depends clearly on the model parameter. The growth index of matter density perturbations is computed to show that its past asymptotic value is given by 9/16, while the value today is as small as 0.4.
Galileon gravity is a robust theoretical alternative to general relativity with a cosmological constant for explaining cosmic acceleration, with interesting properties such as having second order field equations and a shift symmetry. While either its predictions for the cosmic expansion or growth histories can approach standard ΛCDM, we demonstrate the incompatibility of both doing so simultaneously. Already current observational constraints can severely disfavor an entire class of Galileon gravity models that do not couple directly to matter, ruling them out as an alternative to ΛCDM.
We consider the covariant galileon gravity taking into account the third order and fourth order scalar field Lagrangians L_3(π) and L_4(π) consisting of three and four $π$'s with four and five derivatives acting on them respectively. The background dynamical equations are set up for the system under consideration and the stability of the self accelerating solution is demonstrated in general setting. We extended this study to the general case of the fifth order theory. For spherically symmetric static background, we spell out conditions for suppression of fifth force effects mediated by the gal…

In this paper we examine the cosmological consequences of fourth order Galileon gravity. We carry out detailed investigations of the underlying dynamics and demonstrate the stability of one de Sitter phase. The stable de Sitter phase contains a Galileon field $π$ which is an increasing function of time (\dotπ>0). Using the required suppression of the fifth force, supernovae, BAO and CMB data, we constrain parameters of the model. We find that the $π$ matter coupling parameter $β$ is constrained to small numerical values such that $β$<0.02. We also show that the parameters of the third and four…
The maximum size of a bound cosmic structure is computed perturbatively as a function of its mass in the framework of the cubic galileon, proposed recently to model the dark energy of our Universe. Comparison of our results with observations constrains the matter-galileon coupling of the model to $0.033\lesssim α\lesssim 0.17$, thus improving previous bounds based solely on solar system physics.
In this paper we apply the tools of the dynamical systems theory in order to uncover the whole asymptotic structure of the vacuum interactions of a galileon model with a cubic derivative interaction term. It is shown that, contrary to what occurs in the presence of background matter, the galileon interactions of vacuum appreciably modify the late-time cosmic dynamics. In particular, a local late-time attractor representing phantom behavior arises which is inevitably associated with a big rip singularity. It seems that the gravitational interactions of the background matter with the galileon sc…
We use recent measurements of the expansion history of the universe to place constraints on the parameter space of cubic Galileon models, in particular we concentrate on those models which contain the simplest Galileon term plus a linear potential. This gives strong constraints on the Lagrangian of these models. Most dynamical terms in the Galileon Lagrangian are constraint to be small and the acceleration is effectively provided by a constant term in the scalar potential, thus reducing, effectively, to a LCDM model for current acceleration. The effective equation of state is indistinguishable…
The Galileon model is a modified gravity theory that may provide an explanation for the accelerated expansion of the Universe. This model does not suffer from instabilities or ghost problems (normally associated with higher-order derivative theories), restores local General Relativity -- thanks to the Vainshtein screening effect -- and predicts late time acceleration of the expansion. In this paper, we derive a new definition of the Galileon parameters that allows us to avoid having to choose initial conditions for the Galileon field, and then test this model against precise measurements of th…
Galileon gravity offers a robust gravitational theory for explaining cosmic acceleration, having a rich phenomenology of testable behaviors. We explore three classes of Galileon models -- standard uncoupled, and linearly or derivatively coupled to matter -- investigating the expansion history with particular attention to early time and late time attractors, as well as the linear perturbations. From the relativistic and nonrelativistic Poisson equations we calculate the generalizations of the gravitational strength (Newton's constant), deriving its early and late time behavior. By scanning thro…
We study the evolution of matter density perturbations in Galileon cosmology where the late-time cosmic acceleration can be realized by a field kinetic energy. We obtain full perturbation equations at linear order in the presence of five covariant Lagrangians ${cal L}_i$ ($i=1,...,5$) satisfying a Galilean symmetry in the flat space-time. The equations for a matter perturbation as well as an effective gravitational potential are derived under a quasi-static approximation on sub-horizon scales. This approximation can reproduce full numerical solutions with high accuracy for the wavelengths rele…
We study the cosmology of a covariant Galileon field with five covariant Lagrangians and confront this theory with the most recent cosmological probes: the type Ia supernovae data (Constitution and Union2 sets), cosmic microwave background (WMAP7) and the baryon acoustic oscillations (SDSS7). In the Galileon cosmology with a late-time de Sitter attractor, there is a tracker that attracts solutions with different initial conditions to a common trajectory. Including the cosmic curvature K, we place observational constraints on two distinct cases: (i) the tracker, and (ii) the generic solutions t…
We place observational constraints on the Galileon ghost condensate model, a dark energy proposal in cubic-order Horndeski theories consistent with the gravitational-wave event GW170817. The model extends the covariant Galileon by taking an additional higher-order field derivative $X^2$ into account. This allows for the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}$ to access the region $-2<w_{\rm DE}<-1$ without ghosts. Indeed, this peculiar evolution of $w_{\rm DE}$ is favored over that of the cosmological constant $Λ$ from the joint data analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, …
We study a Lagrangian with a cubic Galileon term and a standard scalar-field kinetic contribution with two exponential potentials. In this model the Galileon field generates scaling solutions in which the density of the scalar field $ϕ$ scales in the same manner as the matter density at early-time. These solutions are of high interest because the scalar field can then be compatible with the energy scale of particle physics and can alleviate the coincidence problem. The phenomenology of linear perturbations is thoroughly discussed, including all the relevant effects on the observables. Addition…
We study the cosmology of a covariant scalar field respecting a Galilean symmetry in flat space-time. We show the existence of a tracker solution that finally approaches a de Sitter fixed point responsible for cosmic acceleration today. The viable region of model parameters is clarified by deriving conditions under which ghosts and Laplacian instabilities of scalar and tensor perturbations are absent. The field equation of state exhibits a peculiar phantom-like behavior along the tracker, which allows a possibility to observationally distinguish the Galileon gravity from the Lambda-CDM model.
A scalar-tensor theory of gravity can be made not only to account for the current cosmic acceleration, but also to satisfy solar-system and laboratory constraints, by introducing a non-linear derivative interaction for the scalar field. Such an additional scalar degree of freedom is called "Galileon". The basic idea is inspired by the DGP braneworld, but one can construct a ghost-free model that admits a self-accelerating solution. We perform a fully relativistic analysis of linear perturbations in Galileon cosmology. Although the Galileon model can mimic the background evolution of standard $…
We compare observational data of growth rate with the prediction by Galileon theory. For the same value of the energy density parameter $Ω_{m,0}$, the growth rate in Galileon models is enhanced compared with the $Λ$CDM case, due to the enhancement of Newton's constant. The smaller $Ω_{m,0}$ is, the more suppressed growth rate is. Hence the best fit value of $Ω_{m,0}$ in the Galileon model is 0.16 from only the growth rate data, which is considerably smaller than such value obtained from observations of supernovae Ia, the cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillations. This result…
We study the cosmology of Galileon modified gravity models in the linear perturbation regime. We derive the fully covariant and gauge invariant perturbed field equations using two different methods, which give consistent results, and solve them using a modified version of the {\tt CAMB} code. We find that, in addition to modifying the background expansion history and therefore shifting the positions of the acoustic peaks in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum, the Galileon field can cluster strongly from early times, and causes the Weyl gravitational potential to grow, rather …
In this paper, we examine the cosmological viability of a slow moving galileon field in a potential. The Lagrangian $\cal{L}$ $ =-\frac{1}{2}g^{μν}π_{;μ}π_{;ν} +\frac{G^{μν}}{2M^2}π_{;μ}π_{;ν}$ respects the galileon symmetry in curved space time. We carry out detailed investigations of the underlying dynamics of this Lagrangian with Einstein-Hilbert term and a potential. We demonstrate that the model can give rise to a viable ghost free late time acceleration of universe. Furthermore we study the cosmological perturbation of the model and see that the model gives different BBN constraints at e…
We studied the cosmological constraints on the Galileon gravity obtained from observational data of the growth rate of matter density perturbations, the supernovae Ia (SN Ia), the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). For the same value of the energy density parameter of matter $Ω_{m,0}$, the growth rate $f$ in Galileon models is enhanced, relative to the $Λ$CDM case, because of an increase in Newton's constant. The smaller $Ω_{m,0}$ is, the more growth rate is suppressed. Therefore, the best fit value of $Ω_{m,0}$ in the Galileon model, based only the grow…
We present a unified description of the dark matter and the dark energy sectors, in the framework of shift-symmetric generalized Galileon theories. Considering a particular combination of terms in the Horndeski Lagrangian in which we have not introduced a cosmological constant or a matter sector, we obtain an effective unified cosmic fluid whose equation of state $w_U$ is zero during the whole matter era, namely from redshifts $z\sim3000$ up to $z\sim2-3$. Then at smaller redshifts it starts decreasing, passing the bound $w_U=-1/3$, which marks the onset of acceleration, at around $z\sim0.5$. …
We covariantize the decoupling limit of massive gravity proposed in arXiv:1011.1232 and study the cosmology of this theory as a proxy, which embodies key features of the fully non-linear covariant theory. We first confirm that it exhibits a self-accelerating solution, similar to what has been found in arXiv:1010.1780, where the Hubble parameter corresponds to the graviton mass. For a certain range of parameters fluctuations relative to the self-accelerating background are stable and form an attractor solution. We also show that a degravitating solution can not be constructed in this covarianti…
We study the cosmic expansion history of massive bigravity with a viable matter coupling which treats both metrics on equal footing. We derive the Friedmann equation for the effective metric through which matter couples to the two metrics, and study its solutions. For certain parameter choices, the background cosmology is identical to that of LCDM. More general parameters yield dynamical dark energy, which can still be in agreement with observations of the expansion history. We study specific parameter choices of interest, including minimal models, maximally-symmetric models, and a candidate p…
A probability of distinguishing between $Λ$CDM model and modified gravity is studied by using the future observations for the growth rate of cosmic structure (Euclid redshift survey). Adopting extended DGP model, Kinetic Gravity Braiding model, and Galileon model as modified gravity, we compare predicted cosmic growth rate by models to the mock observational data. The growth rate $fσ_8$ in the original DGP model is suppressed compared with the $Λ$CDM case, for the same value of the current density parameter of matter $Ω_{m,0}$, because of the suppression of effective gravitational constant. In…
In this note, we study cosmic microwave background (CMB) constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity in DBI galileon models in which an induced gravity term is added to the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action. In this model, the non-Gaussianity of orthogonal shape can be generated. We provide a relation between theoretical parameters and orthogonal/equilateral non-linear parameters using the Fisher matrix approach for the CMB bispectrum. In doing so, we include the effect of the CMB transfer functions and experimental noise properties by employing the recently developed \textsf{SONG} code. The relati…
We examine the reionization history of present-day galaxies by explicitly tracing the building blocks of halos from the Cosmic Reionization On Computers project. We track dark matter particles that belong to $z=0$ halos to trace the neutral fractions at corresponding positions during rapid global reionization. The resulting particle reionization histories allow us to explore different definitions of a halo's reionization redshift and to account for the neutral content of the interstellar medium. Consistent with previous work, we find a systematic trend of reionization redshift with mass - pres…
Discrepant measurements of the Universe's expansion rate ($H_0$) may signal physics beyond the standard cosmological model. Here I describe two early modified gravity mechanisms that reconcile the value of $H_0$ by increasing the expansion rate in the era of matter-radiation equality. These mechanisms, based on viable Horndeski theories, require significantly less fine-tuned initial conditions than early dark energy with oscillating scalar fields. In Imperfect Dark Energy at Equality (IDEE), the initial energy density dilutes slower than radiation but faster than matter, naturally peaking arou…

From two very simple axioms: (1) that AGN activity traces spheroid formation, and (2) that the cosmic star-formation history is dominated by spheroid formation at high redshift, we derive simple expressions for the star-formation histories of spheroids and discs, and their implied metal enrichment histories. Adopting a Baldry-Glazebrook initial mass function we use these relations and apply PEGASE.2 to predict the z=0 cosmic spectral energy distributions (CSEDs) of spheroids and discs. The model predictions compare favourably to the dust-corrected CSED recently reported by the Galaxy And Mass …
In 'modified' gravity the observed acceleration of the universe is explained by changing the gravitational force law or the number of degrees of freedom in the gravitational sector. Both possibilities can be tested by measurements of cosmological structure formation. In this paper we elaborate the details of such tests using the Galileon model as a case study. We pay attention to the possibility that each new degree of freedom may have stochastically independent initial conditions, generating different types of potential well in the early universe and breaking complete correlation between dens…
We present the public version of hi_class (www.hiclass-code.net), an extension of the Boltzmann code CLASS to a broad ensemble of modifications to general relativity. In particular, hi_class can calculate predictions for models based on Horndeski's theory, which is the most general scalar-tensor theory described by second-order equations of motion and encompasses any perfect-fluid dark energy, quintessence, Brans-Dicke, $f(R)$ and covariant Galileon models. hi_class has been thoroughly tested and can be readily used to understand the impact of alternative theories of gravity on linear structur…
We present analytical reconstructions of type Ia supernova (SN Ia) delay time distributions (DTDs) by way of two independent methods: by a Markov chain Monte Carlo best-fit technique comparing the volumetric SN Ia rate history to today's compendium cosmic star-formation history, and secondly through a maximum likelihood analysis of the star formation rate histories of individual galaxies in the GOODS/CANDELS field, in comparison to their resultant SN Ia yields. We adopt a flexible skew-normal DTD model, which could match a wide range of physically motivated DTD forms. We find a family of solut…
Modified gravity theories on cosmic scales have three key deviations from general relativity. They can cause cosmic acceleration without a physical, highly negative pressure fluid, can cause a gravitational slip between the two metric potentials, and can cause gravitational waves to propagate differently, e.g. with a speed different from the speed of light. We examine whether the deviations in the metric potentials as observable through modified Poisson equations for scalar density perturbations are related to or independent from deviations in the tensor gravitational waves. We show analytical…
Non-parametric reconstruction or marginalization over the history of reionization using cosmic microwave background data necessarily assumes a prior over possible histories. We show that different but reasonable choices of priors can shift current and future constraints on the reionization optical depth, $τ$, or correlated parameters such as the neutrino mass sum, $Σm_ν$, at the level of 0.3-0.4$σ$, i.e., that this analysis is somewhat prior dependent. We point out some prior-related problems with the commonly used principal component reconstruction, concluding that the significance of some re…
Recent versions of the observed cosmic star-formation history (SFH) have resolved an inconsistency with the stellar mass density history. We show that the revised SFH also scales up the delay-time distribution (DTD) of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), as determined from the observed volumetric SN Ia rate history, aligning it with other field-galaxy SN Ia DTD measurements. The revised-SFH-based DTD has a $t^{-1.1 \pm 0.1}$ form and a Hubble-time-integrated production efficiency of $N/M_\star=1.3\pm0.1$ SNe Ia per $1000~{\rm M_\odot}$ of formed stellar mass. Using these revised histories and updated…
The string theory swampland proposes that there is no UV-completion for an effective field theory with an exact (metastable) de Sitter vacua, thereby ruling out standard $Λ$CDM cosmology if the conjecture is taken seriously. The swampland criteria have also been shown to be in sharp tension with quintessence models under current and forthcoming observational bounds. As a logical next step, we introduce higher derivative self-interactions in the low-energy effective Lagrangian and show that one can satisfy observational constraints as well as the swampland criteria for some specific models. In …
The cosmic near-infrared background (NIRB) offers a powerful integral probe of radiative processes at different cosmic epochs, including the pre-reionization era when metal-free, Population III (Pop III) stars first formed. While the radiation from metal-enriched, Population II (Pop II) stars likely dominates the contribution to the observed NIRB from the reionization era, Pop III stars -- if formed efficiently -- might leave characteristic imprints on the NIRB thanks to their strong Ly$α$ emission. Using a physically-motivated model of first star formation, we provide an analysis of the NIRB …
In this paper we analyze the possibility of detecting nontrivial quantum phenomena in observations of the temperature anisotropy of the cosmic background radiation (CBR), for example, if the Universe could be found in a coherent superposition of two states corresponding to different CBR temperatures. Such observations are sensitive to scalar primordial fluctuations but insensitive to tensor fluctuations, which are therefore converted into an environment for the former. Even for a free inflaton field minimally coupled to gravity, scalar-tensor interactions induce enough decoherence among histor…
With a simple power-law approximation of high-redshift ($\gtrsim3.5$) star formation history, i.e., $\dotρ_*(z)\propto [(1+z)/4.5]^{-α}$, we investigate the reionization of intergalactic medium (IGM) and the consequent Thomson scattering optical depth for cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. A constraint on the evolution index $α$ is derived from the CMB optical depth measured by the {\it Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe} (WMAP) experiment, which reads $α\approx2.18\lg{\mathscr{N}_γ}-3.89$, where the free parameter $\mathscr{N}_γ$ is the number of the escaped ionizing ultraviolet pho…
We demonstrate that the general second-order scalar-tensor theories, which have attracted attention as possible modified gravity models to explain the late time cosmic acceleration, could be strongly constrained from the argument of the gravitational Cherenkov radiation. To this end, we consider the purely kinetic coupled gravity and the extended galileon model. In these models, the propagation speed of tensor mode could be less than the speed of light, which puts very strong constraints from the gravitational Cherenkov radiation.
While general relativity ties together the cosmic expansion history and growth history of large scale structure, beyond the standard model these can have independent behaviors. We derive expressions for cosmologies with identical growth histories but different expansion histories, or other deviations. This provides a relation for isogrowth cosmologies, but also highlights in general the need for observations to measure each of the growth, expansion, gravity, and dark matter property histories.
In this paper, inflationary cosmology is reviewed, paying particular attention to its observational signatures associated with large-scale density perturbations generated from quantum fluctuations. In the most general scalar-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion, we derive the scalar spectral index $n_s$, the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, and the nonlinear estimator $f_{\rm NL}$ of primordial non-Gaussianities to confront models with observations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. Our analysis includes models such as potential-driven slow-roll inflatio…
We present a robust method to constrain average galaxy star formation rates, star formation histories, and the intracluster light as a function of halo mass. Our results are consistent with observed galaxy stellar mass functions, specific star formation rates, and cosmic star formation rates from z=0 to z=8. We consider the effects of a wide range of uncertainties on our results, including those affecting stellar masses, star formation rates, and the halo mass function at the heart of our analysis. As they are relevant to our method, we also present new calibrations of the dark matter halo mas…
Dark matter annihilation or de-excitation, decay of metastable species, or other new physics may inject energetic electrons and photons into the photon-baryon fluid during and after recombination. As such particles cool, they partition their energy into a large number of efficiently ionizing electrons and photons, which in turn modify the ionization history. Recent work has provided a simple method for constraining arbitrary energy deposition histories using the cosmic microwave background (CMB); in this note, we present results describing the energy deposition histories for photons and electr…
There have been a number of attempts to measure the expansion rate of the universe at high redshift using Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) as "chronometers". The method generally assumes that stars in LRGs are all formed at the same time. In this paper, we quantify the uncertainties on the measurement of H(z) which arise when one considers more realistic, extended star formation histories. In selecting galaxies from the Millennium Simulation for this study, we show that using rest-frame criteria significantly improves the homogeneity of the sample and that H(z) can be recovered to within 3% at z~0…
We study observational constraints on a specific dark energy model in the framework of Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi theories, which extends the Galileon ghost condensate (GGC) to the domain of beyond Horndeski theories. In this model, we show that the Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, combined with datasets of baryon acoustic oscillations, supernovae type Ia, and redshift-space distortions, give the tight upper bound $|α_{\rm H}^{(0)}| \le {\cal O}(10^{-6})$ on today's beyond-Horndeski (BH) parameter $α_{\rm H}$. This is mostly attributed to the shift of CMB acoustic peaks ind…
Efforts to understand and map the possible explanations for the late time acceleration of the universe have led to a broad range of suggestions, ranging from the cosmological constant and straightforward dark energy, to exotically coupled models, to infrared modifications of General Relativity. If we are to uncover which, if any, of these approaches might provide a serious answer to the problem, it is crucial to understand the constraints that theoretical consistency places on the models, and on the regimes in which they make predictions. In this talk, delivered as an invited plenary lecture a…
We study chaotic inflation in the context of modified gravitational theories. Our analysis covers models based on (i) a field coupling $ω(ϕ)$ with the kinetic energy $X$ and a nonmimimal coupling $ζϕ^{2} R/2$ with a Ricci scalar $R$, (ii) Brans-Dicke (BD) theories, (iii) Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity, and (iv) gravity with a Galileon correction. Dilatonic coupling with the kinetic energy and/or negative nonminimal coupling are shown to lead to compatibility with observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies for the self-coupling inflaton potential $V(ϕ)=λϕ^{4}/4$. …
We present a new public Python package, DarkHistory, for computing the effects of dark matter annihilation and decay on the temperature and ionization history of the early universe. DarkHistory simultaneously solves for the evolution of the free electron fraction and gas temperature, and for the cooling of annihilation/decay products and the secondary particles produced in the process. Consequently, we can self-consistently include the effects of both astrophysical and exotic sources of heating and ionization, and automatically take into account backreaction, where modifications to the ionizat…
We discuss the spectral energy distributions and physical properties of six galaxies whose photometric redshifts suggest they lie beyond a redshift $z\simeq$9. Each was selected on account of a prominent excess seen in the Spitzer/IRAC 4.5$μ$m band which, for a redshift above $z=9.0$, likely indicates the presence of a rest-frame Balmer break and a stellar component that formed earlier than a redshift $z\simeq10$. In addition to constraining the earlier star formation activity on the basis of fits using stellar population models with BAGPIPES, we have undertaken the necessary, but challenging,…
We calculate cosmic distributions in space and time of the formation sites of the first, "Pop III.1" stars, exploring a model in which these are the progenitors of all supermassive black holes (SMBHs), seen in the centers of most large galaxies. Pop III.1 stars are defined to form from primordial composition gas in dark matter minihalos with $\sim10^6\:M_\odot$ that are isolated from neighboring astrophysical sources by a given isolation distance, $d_{\rm{iso}}$. We assume Pop III.1 sources are seeds of SMBHs, based on protostellar support by dark matter annihilation heating that allows them t…
We present a new statistical method to determine the relationship between the stellar masses of galaxies and the masses of their host dark matter haloes over the entire cosmic history from z~4 to the present. This multi-epoch abundance matching (MEAM) model self-consistently takes into account that satellite galaxies first become satellites at times earlier than they are observed. We employ a redshift-dependent parameterization of the stellar-to-halo mass relation to populate haloes and subhaloes in the Millennium simulations with galaxies, requiring that the observed stellar mass functions at…
