We study an index of a transversal Dirac operator on an odd-dimensional manifold $X$ with locally free $\mathbb{S}^1$-action. One difficulty of using heat kernel method lies in the understanding of the asymptotic expansion as $t\to 0^+$. By a probabilistic approach via the Feynman-Kac formula, the transversal heat kernel on $X$ can be linked to the ordinary heat kernel for functions on the orbifold $M=X/\mathbb{S}^1$ which is more tractable. After some technical results for a uniform bound estimate as $t\to 0^+$, we are reduced from the transversal, orbifold situation to the classical situation particularly at points of the principal stratum. One application asserts that for a certain class of spin orbifolds $M$, to the classical index problem of Kawasaki in the Riemannian setting the net contributions arising from the lower-dimensional strata beyond the principal one vanish identically.
In this expository paper, we explain a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications is an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years. This paper summarizes the work in the papers arXiv:1005.3845 [math.DG] and arXiv:1008.1757 [math.DG].
In this paper we study curvature properties of semi-symmetric type of totally umbilical radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces $(M,g)$ and $(M,\widetilde g)$ of a Kähler-Norden manifold $(\overline M,\overline J,\overline g,\overline {\widetilde g})$ of constant totally real sectional curvatures $\overline ν$ and $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ ($g$ and $\widetilde g$ are the induced metrics on $M$ by the Norden metrics $\overline g$ and $\overline {\widetilde g}$,respectively). We obtain a condition for $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ (resp. $\overline ν$) which is equivalent to each of the follow…
We study transversality for Lipschitz-Fredholm maps in the context of bounded Fréchet manifolds. We show that the set of all Lipschitz-Fredholm maps of a fixed index between Fréchet spaces has the transverse stability property. We give a straightforward extension of the Smale transversality theorem by using the generalized Sard's theorem for this category of manifolds. We also provide an answer to the well known problem concerning the existence of a submanifold structure on the preimage of a transversal submanifold.
M. F. Atiyah proved that the index of a transversally elliptic operator relative to a free action can be computed by using indices of elliptic operators on the orbit manifold. In this paper, we derive an explicit formula for the transversal indices on S^1-bundles over complex projective spaces. Using this explicit formula and the index map, we prove Lefschetz formula for the n-dimensional complex projective space with the canonical action of T^{n + 1}.
The index theorem, discovered by Atiyah and Singer in 1963, is one of most important results in the twentieth century mathematics. It found numerous applications in analysis, geometry and physics. Since it was discovered numerous attempts to generalize it were made, see for example [5, 3, 4, 16, 12] to mention a few; some of these generalizations gave rise to new very productive areas of mathematics. In this lectures we first review the classical Atiyah-Singer index theorem and its generalization to so called transversally elliptic operators (Atiyah, 1974) due to Atiyah and Singer. Then we dis…
We study the classical action functional $\SMC_V$ on the free loop space of a closed, finite dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ and the symplectic action $\AMC_V$ on the free loop space of its cotangent bundle. The critical points of both functionals can be identified with the set of perturbed closed geodesics in $M$. The potential $V\in C^\infty(M\times S^1,\R)$ serves as perturbation and we show that both functionals are Morse for generic $V$. In this case we prove that the Morse index of a critical point $x$ of $\SMC_V$ equals minus its Conley-Zehnder index when viewed as a critical point …
We establish Thom's jet transversality theorem for regular maps from an affine algebraic manifold to an algebraic manifold satisfying a suitable flexibility condition. It can be considered as the algebraic version of Forstnerič's jet transversality theorem for holomorphic maps from a Stein manifold to an Oka manifold. Our jet transversality theorem implies genericity theorems for regular maps of maximal ranks. As an application, it follows that every connected compact locally flexible manifold is the image of a holomorphic submersion from an affine space. We also show that every algebraically …
For closed manifolds endowed with a Riemannian foliation of codimension $4$, one can define a transversal Seiberg-Witten map. We show that there is a finite dimensional approximation for such a map. By such a method and under the condition that $H^1_b(M)\cap H^1(M,\mathbb Z)$ is a lattice of $H^1_b(M)$, we can define a foliated version of Bauer-Furuta invariant. Moreover, if the basic cohomological group is of zero dimension, we can give an estimate for the index of transversal Dirac operator of a foliated spin structure. Furthermore, under the condition that $H^\pm_b(M)=1$, we show the vanish…
We construct certain spectral triples in the sense of A. ~Connes and H. Moscovici (``The local index formula in noncommutative geometry'' {\it Geom. Funct. Anal.}, 5(2):174--243, 1995) that is transversally elliptic but not necessarily elliptic. We prove that these spectral triples satisfie the conditions which ensure the Connes-Moscovici local index formula applies. We show that such a spectral triple has discrete dimensional spectrum. A notable feature of the spectral triple is that its corresponding zeta functions have multiple poles, while in the classical elliptic cases only simple poles …
In this article, we study harmonic symmetries on the compact locally conformally Kähler manifold $M$ of $dim_{\mathbb{C}}=n$. The space of harmonic symmetries is a subspace of harmonic differential forms which defined by the kernel of a certain Laplacian-type operator $\square$. We observe that the spaces $\ker(\square)\capΩ^{l}=\{0\}$ for any $|l-n|\geq2$ and $\kerΔ_{\bar{\partial}}\cap P^{k,n-1-k}\cap\ker(i_{θ^{\sharp}})\cong\ker(\square^{k,n-1-k})$, $\kerΔ_{\bar{\partial}}\cap P^{k,n-k}\cong\ker(\square^{k,n-k})$. Furthermore, suppose that $M$ is a Vaisman manifold, we prove that (i) $α$ is…
We use the notion of generalized signatures at a singularity of a smooth curve of symmetric bilinear forms to determine a formula for the computation of the Maslov index in the case of a real-analytic path having possibly non transversal intersections. We discuss some applications of the theory, with special emphasis on the study of the Jacobi equation along a semi-Riemannian geodesic. The research work exposed in this paper originated from a suggestion given by the third author relating the spectral flow with the partial signatures. He pointed out several references and formulated the stateme…
We generalize the transgression formula for the eta form of Bismut, Cheeger and Berline, Getzler, Vergne for vertical Dirac operators on a fibre bundle with odd dimensional fibres where the Dirac operators have locally at most one eigenvalue of multiplicity one crossing zero transversally.
In these survey lectures, we investigate the geometric and analytic properties of transverse Dirac operators. In particular, we define a transverse Dirac operator associated to a distribution that is essentially self-adjoint (Prokhorenkov-R result). We describe the Habib-R Theorem showing that the invariance of the spectrum of a basic Dirac operator on a Riemannian foliation. The Bruening-Kamber-R theorems give Atiyah-Singer type formulas for the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators on G-manifolds and the index of basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations. These notes con…
A contact 3-manifold $M$ admitting a transversal Ricci soliton $(g,v,λ)$ is either Sasakian or locally isometric to one of the Lie groups SU(2), $SL(2,R)$, E(2), E(1,1) with a left invariant metric.
For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal comp…
We study the index theory of a class of perturbed Dirac operators on non-compact manifolds of the form $\mathsf{D}+\mathrm{i}\mathsf{c}(X)$, where $\mathsf{c}(X)$ is a Clifford multiplication operator by an orbital vector field with respect to the action of a compact Lie group. Our main result is that the index class of such an operator factors as a KK-product of certain KK-theory classes defined by $\mathsf{D}$ and $X$. As a corollary we obtain the excision and cobordism-invariance properties first established by Braverman. An index theorem of Braverman relates the index of $\mathsf{D}+\mathr…
We study the singularities of the exponential map in semi Riemannian locally symmetric manifolds. Conjugate points along geodesics depend only on real negative eigenvalues of the curvature tensor, and their contribution to the Maslov index of the geodesic is computed explicitly. We prove that degeneracy of conjugate points, which is a phenomenon that can only occur in semi-Riemannian geometry, is caused in the locally symmetric case by the lack of diagonalizability of the curvature tensor. The case of Lie groups endowed with a bi-invariant metric is studied in some detail, and conditions are g…
This paper gives a survey of the index theory of tangentially elliptic and transversally elliptic operators on foliated manifolds as well as of related notions and results in non-commutative geometry.
In his approach to analytic number theory C. Deninger has suggested that to the Riemann zeta function $\hatζ(s)$ (resp. the zeta function $ζ_Y(s)$ of a smooth projective curve $Y$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, $q=p^f$)) one could possibly associate a foliated Riemannian laminated space $(S_{\mathbb{Q}}, \mathcal{F}, g, ϕ^t)$ (resp. $(S_Y, \mathcal{F}, g, ϕ^t)$) endowed with an action of a flow $ϕ^t$ whose primitive compact orbits should correspond to the primes of $\mathbb{Q}$ (resp. $Y$). The existence of such a foliated space and flow $ϕ^t$ is still unknown except when $Y$ is an ellipt…
Let $M$ be a compact Riemannian manifold endowed with an isometric action of a compact Lie group. The method of the Witten deformation is used to compute the virtual representation-valued equivariant index of a transversally elliptic, first order differential operator on $M$. The multiplicities of irreducible representations in the index are expressed in terms of local quantities associated to the isolated singular points of an equivariant bundle map that is locally Clifford multiplication by a Killing vector field near these points.
In this article, we start to recall the inversion formula for the convolution with the Box spline. The equivariant cohomology and the equivariant K-theory with respect to a compact torus G of various spaces associated to a linear action of G in a vector space M can be both described using some vector spaces of distributions, on the dual of the group G or on the dual of its Lie algebra. The morphism from K-theory to cohomology is analyzed and the multiplication by the Todd class is shown to correspond to the operator (deconvolution) inverting the semidiscrete convolution with a box spline. Fina…
Given an elliptic action of a compact Lie group $G$ on a co-oriented contact manifold $(M,E)$ one obtains two naturally associated objects: A $G$-transversally elliptic operator $\dirac$, and an equivariant differential form with generalised coefficients $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ defined in terms of a choice of contact form on $M$. We explain how the form $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ is natural with respect to the contact structure, and give a formula for the equivariant index of $\dirac$ involving $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$. A key tool is the Chern character with compact support developed by Paradan-Vergne \cite{PV1,…
We consider a consider the case of a compact manifold M, together with the following data: the action of a compact Lie group H and a smooth H-invariant distribution E, such that the H-orbits are transverse to E. These data determine a natural equivariant differential form with generalized coefficients J(E,X) whose properties we describe. When E is equipped with a complex structure, we define a class of symbol mappings in terms of the resulting almost-CR structure that are H-transversally elliptic whenever the action of H is transverse to E. We determine a formula for the H-equivariant index of…
Among those transversally elliptic operators initiated by Atiyah and Singer, Kohn's $\Box_b$ operator on CR manifolds with $S^1$ action is a natural one of geometric significance for complex analysts. Our first main result establishes an asymptotic expansion for the heat kernel of such an operator with values in its Fourier components, which involves an unprecedented contribution in terms of a distance function from lower dimensional strata of the $S^1$-action. Our second main result computes a local index density, in terms of \emph{tangential} characteristic forms, on such manifolds including…
Using the method of Witten deformation, we express the basic index of a transversal Dirac operator over a Riemannian foliation as the sum of integers associated to the critical leaf closures of a given foliated bundle map.
We derive a sufficient condition on a bounded pseudoconvex domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}^2$ with smooth boundary such that $-(-ρ)^η$ is plurisubharmonic on $Ω$ for $η>0$ arbitrarily close to $1$ (the supremum of $η$ is called Diederich-Fornæss index, see Definition (df)). This condition (see Theorem prop) extends a theorem of Fornæss and Herbig in 2007 and only requires restriction on Levi-flat sets of the boundary $\partialΩ$. Since the condition is on Levi-flat sets, it contains more geometric information. As an application of this new condition, we discuss how the geometry of the Levi-flat set…
The main result of this paper is non-vanishing of the image of the index map from the $G$-equivariant $K$-homology of a proper $G$-compact $G$-manifold $X$ to the $K$-theory of the $C^{*}$-algebra of the group $G$. Under the assumption that the Kronecker pairing of a $K$-homology class with a low-dimensional cohomology class is non-zero, we prove that the image of this class under the index map is non-zero. Neither discreteness of the locally compact group $G$ nor freeness of the action of $G$ on $X$ are required. The case of free actions of discrete groups was considered earlier by B. Hanke a…
We show that if $g$ is a Riemannian metric on a closed piecewise locally symmetric manifold $M$, then the lift of $g$ to the universal cover $\widetilde{M}$ has a discrete isometry group. We also show that the index $[\Isom(\widetilde{M}): π_1(M)]$ is bounded by a constant independent of $g$.
We show that every finite dimensional Hausdorff (not necessarily paracompact, not necessarily second countable) $C^r$-manifold can be embedded into a weakly complete vector space, i.e. a locally convex topological vector space of the form ${\mathbb R}^I$ for an uncountable index set $I$ and determine the minimal cardinality of $I$ for which such an embedding is possible.
Let $D$ be a (generalized) Dirac operator on a non-compact complete Riemannian manifold $M$ acted on by a compact Lie group $G$. Let $v:M --> Lie(G)$ be an equivariant map, such that the corresponding vector field on $M$ does not vanish outside of a compact subset. These data define an element of $K$-theory of the transversal cotangent bundle to $M$. Hence a topological index of the pair $(D,v)$ is defined as an element of the completed ring of characters of $G$. We define an analytic index of $(D,v)$ as an index space of certain deformation of $D$ and we prove that the analytic and topologica…
We study the index of the $G$-invariant elliptic pseudo-differential operator acting on a complete Riemannian manifold, where a unimodular, locally compact group $G$ acts properly and cocompactly. An $L^2$-index formula was obtained using the heat kernel method.
We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin-Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.
