MnBi2Te4 and MnBi4Te7 are intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulators, offering a promising materials platform for realizing exotic topological quantum states. However, high densities of intrinsic defects in these materials not only cause bulk metallic conductivity, preventing the measurement of quantum transport in surface states, but may also affect magnetism and topological properties. In this paper, we show by density functional theory calculations that the strain induced by the internal heterostructure promotes the formation of large-size-mismatched antisite defect BiMn in MnBi2Te4; such strain is further enhanced in MnBi4Te7, giving rise to even higher BiMn density. The abundance of intrinsic BiMn donors results in degenerate n-type conductivity under the Te-poor growth condition. Our calculations suggest that growths in a Te-rich condition can lower the Fermi level, which is supported by our transport measurements. We further show that the internal strain can also enable efficient doping by large-size-mismatched substitutional NaMn acceptors, which can compensate BiMn donors and lower the Fermi level. Na doping may pin the Fermi level inside the bulk band gap even at the Te-poor limit in MnBi2Te4. Furthermore, facile defect formation in MnSb2Te4 and its implication in Sb doping in MnBi2Te4 as well as the defect segregation in MnBi4Te7 are discussed. The defect engineering and doping strategies proposed in this paper will stimulate further studies for improving synthesis and for manipulating magnetic and topological properties in MnBi2Te4, MnBi4Te7, and related compounds.
The structural and magnetic behavior of Mn-site doped intermetallic manganese silicide alloys of nominal compositions Mn$_{5-x}$A$_x$Si$_3$ ($x$ = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and A = Ni, Cr) have been investigated with a focus to the inverted hysteresis behavior and thermomagnetic irreversibility. Room temperature x-ray powder diffraction data confirm that all the doped alloys crystallize in hexagonal $D8_8$ type structure with space group $P6_3/mcm$. The doped alloys are found to show paramagnetic (PM) - collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM2) - noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM1) transitions during cooling …
We report a systematic study of spin transport in antiferromagnetic (AF) insulators having a wide range of ordering temperatures. Spin current is dynamically injected from Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) into various AF insulators in Pt/insulator/YIG trilayers. Robust, long-distance spin transport in the AF insulators is observed, which shows strong correlation with the AF ordering temperatures. We find a striking linear relationship between the spin decay length in the AFs and the damping enhancement in YIG, suggesting the critical role of magnetic correlations in the AF insulators as well as at the AF/YIG in…
Inducing magnetic orders in a topological insulator (TI) to break its time reversal symmetry has been predicted to reveal many exotic topological quantum phenomena. The manipulation of magnetic orders in a TI layer can play a key role in harnessing these quantum phenomena towards technological applications. Here we fabricated a thin magnetic TI film on an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator Cr2O3 layer and found that the magnetic moments of the magnetic TI layer and the surface spins of the Cr2O3 layers favor interfacial AFM coupling. Field cooling studies show a crossover from negative to posit…
Epitaxial strain has been shown to drive structural phase transitions along with novel functionalities in perovskite-based thin-films. Aliovalent doping at the A-site can drive an insulator-to-metal and magnetic transitions in perovskites along with a variety of interesting structural and electronic phenomena. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate here, how coupling epitaxial strain with A-site hole doping in a multiferroic double perovskite, Bi2FeCrO6, could lead to mitigation of issues related to anti-site defects and lowered magnetisation in thin-films of the material. We also…
We report intrinsic spin decay length of an antiferromagnetic insulator. We found that at an antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic interface, a spin current generated by spin pumping is strongly suppressed by two-magnon scattering. By eliminating the two-magnon contribution, we discovered that the characteristic length of spin decay in NiO changes by two-orders of magnitude through the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition. The spin decay length in the antiferromagnetic state is longer than 100 nm, which is an order of magnitude longer than previously believed. These results provide a crucial…
In this report, it is shown that Cr doped into the bulk and Cr deposited on the surface of Bi2Se3 films produced by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) have strikingly different effects on both the electronic structure and chemical environment.
We study magnetotransport in a rare earth doped topological insulator, Sm0.1Sb1.9Te3 single crystals, under magnetic fields up to 14 T. It is found that that the crystals exhibit Shubnikov de Haas oscillations in their magneto-transport behaviour at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. The SdH oscillations result from the mixed contributions of bulk and surface states. We also investigate the SdH oscillations in different orientations of the magnetic field, which reveals a three dimensional Fermi surface topology. By fitting the oscillatory resistance with the Lifshitz Kosevich theory, w…
Ordinary doping by electrons (holes) generally means that the Fermi level shifts towards the conduction band (valence band) and that the conductivity of free carriers increases. Recently, however, some peculiar doping characteristics were sporadically recorded in different materials without noting the mechanism: electron doping was observed to cause a portion of the lowest unoccupied band to merge into the valance band, leading to a decrease in conductivity. This behavior we dub as 'anti-doping' was seen in rare-earth nickel oxides SmNiO3, cobalt oxides SrCoO2.5, Li-ion battery materials and e…
The van der Waals material CeOI is predicted to be a layered antiferromagnetic Mott insulator by DFT+U calculation. We successfully grow the CeOI films down to monolayer on graphene/6H-SiC(0001) substrate by using molecular beam epitaxy. Films are studied by {\it in-situ} scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, which shows a band gap of 4.4 eV. A metallic phase with composition unidentified also exists. This rare earth oxyhalide adds a new member to the two-dimensional magnetic materials.
Based on DFT and Berry curvature calculations, we predict that quantum anomalous hall effect (QAHE) can be realized in two dimensional anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) NiRuCl6 with zero net magnetic moment. By tuning spin-orbits coupling (SOC), we find that the topological properties of NiRuCl6 come from its energy band reversal. The results indicate that NiRuCl6 behaves as AFM Chern insulator and its spin-polarized electronic structure and strong spin-orbits coupling (SOC) are the origin of QAHE. Considering the compatibility between AFM and insulator, AFM Chern insulator is more suitable to realize …
Breaking time reversal symmetry in a topological insulator may lead to quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion insulator phase. MnBi4Te7 is a recently discovered antiferromagnetic topological insulator with TN ~12.5 K, which is constituted of alternatively stacked magnetic layer (MnBi2Te4) and non-magnetic layer (Bi2Te3). By means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we clearly observe the electronic state present at a step edge of a magnetic MnBi2Te4 layer but absent at non-magnetic Bi2Te3 layers at 4.5 K. Furthermore, we find that as the temperature rises above TN, the edge state vanishes, wh…
Magnon-polarons, a type of hybridized excitations between magnons and phonons, were first reported in yttrium iron garnet as anomalies in the spin Seebeck effect responses. Here we report an observation of antiferromagnetic (AFM) magnon-polarons in a uniaxial AFM insulator Cr2O3. Despite the relatively higher energy of magnon than that of the acoustic phonons, near the spin-flop transition of ~ 6 T, the left-handed magnon spectrum shifts downward to hybridize with the acoustic phonons to form AFM magnon-polarons, which can also be probed by the spin Seebeck effect. The spin Seebeck signal is f…
Although vanadium dioxide (VO2) exhibits the most abrupt metal to insulator transition (MIT) properties near room-temperature, the present regulation of their MIT functionalities is insufficient owing to the high complexity and susception associated with V4+. Herein, we demonstrate a spark plasma assisted reactive sintering (SPARS) approach to simultaneously achieve in situ doping and sintering of VO2 within largely short period (~10 minutes). This enables high convenience and flexibility in regulating the electronic structure of VO2 via dopant elements covering Ti, W, Nb, Mo, Cr and Fe, leadi…
The Mott transistor is a paradigm for a new class of electronic devices---often referred to by the term Mottronics---, which are based on charge correlations between the electrons. Since correlation-induced insulating phases of most oxide compounds are usually very robust, new methods have to be developed to push such materials right to the boundary to the metallic phase in order to enable the metal-insulator transition to be switched by electric gating. Here we demonstrate that thin films of the prototypical Mott insulator LaTiO$_3$ grown by pulsed laser deposition under oxygen atmosphere are…
We report modulation of a reversible phase transition in VO2 films by hydrogen doping. A metallic phase and a new insulating phase are successively observed at room temperature as the doping concentration increases. It is suggested that the polarized charges from doped hydrogens play an important role. These charges gradually occupy V3d-O2p hybridized orbitals and consequently modulate the filling of the VO2 crystal conduction band-edge states, which eventually evolve into new valence band-edge states. This demonstrates the exceptional sensitivity of VO2 electronic properties to electron conce…
Quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has been experimentally observed in magnetically doped topological insulators. However, ultra-low temperature (usually below 300 mK), which is mainly attributed to inhomogeneous magnetic doping, becomes a daunting challenge for potential applications. Here, a \textit{nonmagnetic}-doping strategy is proposed to produce ferromagnetism and realize QAHE in topological insulators. We numerically demonstrated that magnetic moments can be induced by nitrogen or carbon substitution in Bi$_2$Se$_3$, Bi$_2$Te$_3$, and Sb$_2$Te$_3$, but only nitrogen-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3…
Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ is believed to be an axion insulator in its antiferromagnetic ground state. However, direct identification of axion insulators remains experimentally elusive because the observed vanishing Hall resistance, while indicating the onset of the axion field, is inadequate to distinguish the system from a trivial normal insulator. Using numerical Green's functions, we theoretically demonstrate the quantized magnetoelectric current in a tunnel junction of atomically thin ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ sandwiched be…
A magnon Nernst effect, an antiferromagnetic analogue of the magnon Hall effect in ferromagnetic insulators, has been studied experimentally for a layered antiferromagnetic insulator MnPS3 in contact with two Pt strips. Thermoelectric voltage in the Pt strips grown on MnPS3 single crystals exhibits non-monotonic temperature dependence at low temperatures, which cannot be explained by electronic origins in Pt but can be ascribed to the inverse spin Hall voltage induced by a magnon Nernst effect. Control of antiferromagnetic domains in the MnPS3 crystal by magnetoelectric cooling is found to mod…
Cr1+dTe2 is a self-intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide that hosts tunable electronic filling and magnetism in its semimetallic band structure. Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies have unveiled a systematic shift in this semimetallic band structure relative to the chemical potential with increased Cr doping. This report presents the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the longitudinal thermopower Sxx for different Cr1+dTe2 compositions. We show that as doping increases, the sign of Sxx changes from positive to negative at the critical doping level …
Metal-ion doping can effectively regulate the metal-insulator transition temperature in $\mathrm{VO}_2$. Experiments found that the pentavalent and hexavalent ion doping dramatically reduces the transition temperature while the trivalent ion doping increases the transition temperature and induces intermediate phases. Based on the phase-field model of the metal-insulator transition in $\mathrm{VO}_2$ we developed previously, we formulate a Landau potential of the metal-ion-doped $\mathrm{VO}_2$ taking account of the effects of doping on the electron correlation and lattice structure. The effect…
High temperature superconductivity in cuprates arises from doping a parent Mott insulator by electrons or holes. A central issue is how the Mott gap evolves and the low-energy states emerge with doping. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on a cuprate parent compound by sequential in situ electron doping. The chemical potential jumps to the bottom of the upper Hubbard band upon a slight electron doping, making it possible to directly visualize the charge transfer band and the full Mott gap region. With increasing doping, the Mott gap rapidly collapses due to t…
We report on Cr doping effect in Mn3Sn polycrystalline films with both uniform and modulation doping. It is found that Cr doping with low concentration does not cause notable changes to the structural and magnetic properties of Mn3Sn, but it significantly enhances the anomalous Hall conductivity, particularly for modulation-doped samples at low temperature. A Hall conductivity as high as 184.8 Ω-1 cm-1 is obtained for modulation-doped samples at 50 K, in a sharp contrast to vanishingly small values for undoped samples at the same temperature. We attribute the enhancement to the change of Fermi…
The recent discovery of antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has triggered great research efforts on exploring novel magnetic topological physics. Based on first-principles calculations, we find that the manipulation of magnetic orientation and order not only significantly affects material symmetries and orbital hybridizations, but also results in variant new magnetic topological phases in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. We thus predict a series of unusual topological quantum phase transitions that are magnetically controllable in the material, including phase transitions from AFM…
We explore the possibility of exciting spin waves in insulating antiferromagnetic films by injecting spin current at the surface. We analyze both magnetically compensated and uncompensated interfaces. We find that the spin current induced spin-transfer torque can excite spin waves in insulating antiferromagnetic materials and that the chirality of the excited spin wave is determined by the polarization of the injected spin current. Furthermore, the presence of magnetic surface anisotropy can greatly increase the accessibility of these excitations.
The discovery of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM-TI) in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has attracted intense attention, most of which lies on its electrical properties. In this paper, we report electronic, thermal, and thermoelectric transport studies of this newly found AFM-TI. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of its resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient indicate strong coupling between charge, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom in this system. Furthermore, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exhibits a large anomalous Nernst signal, which is associated with non-zero …

Innovations in imaging technology involves finding strategies and materials suitable for detection applications over the entire infrared range. Herein, we propose a new design concept based on the unique feature of an excitonic insulator, namely, negative exciton transition energy ($E_t$). We demonstrate this concept using first-principles $GW$-BSE calculations on one-dimensional organometallic wire (CrBz)$_\infty$. The pristine (CrBz)$_\infty$ exhibits an excitonic instability due to a negative $E_t$ for the lowest exciton. Substitutional doping can continuously tune the $E_t$ from $\sim$0 to…
The insulator to metal phase transition in NiO is studied within the framework of reduced density matrix functional theory and density functional theory. We find that the spectral density obtained using reduced density matrix functional theory is in good agreement with experiments both undoped as well as doped NiO. We find that the physical description of the hole-doping induced phase transition \emph{qualitatively differs} depending on whether NiO is calculated within density functional theory or reduced density matrix functional. In the former case the underlying mechanism of the phase trans…
The evolution of the electronic structures of strongly correlated insulators with doping has long been a central fundamental question in condensed matter physics; it is also of great practical relevance for applications. We have studied the evolution of NiO under hole {\em and} electron doping using high-quality thin film and a wide range of experimental and theoretical methods. The evolution is in both cases very smooth with dopant concentration. The band gap is asymmetric under electron and hole doping, consistent with a charge-transfer insulator picture, and is reduced faster under hole tha…
The observation of helical surface states in Bi-based three-dimensional topological insulators has been a challenge since their theoretical prediction. The main issue raises when the Fermi level shifts deep into the bulk conduction band due to the unintentional doping. This results in a metallic conduction of the bulk which dominates the transport measurements and hinders the probing of the surface states in these experiments. In this study, we investigate various strategies to reduce the residual doping in Bi-based topological insulators. Flakes of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_{1.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$Te$_{1.…
Here we present microscopic evidence of the persistence of uniaxial A-type antiferromagnetic order to the surface layers of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ single crystals using magnetic force microscopy. Our results reveal termination-dependent magnetic contrast across both surface step edges and domain walls, which can be screened by thin layers of soft magnetism. The robust surface A-type order is further corroborated by the observation of termination-dependent surface spin-flop transitions, which have been theoretically proposed decades ago. Our results not only provide key ingredients for understanding th…
The magnetic properties of the van der Waals magnetic topological insulators MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ are investigated by magneto-transport measurements. We evidence that the relative strength of the inter-layer exchange coupling J to the uniaxial anisotropy K controls a transition from an A-type antiferromagnetic order to a ferromagnetic-like metamagnetic state. A bi-layer Stoner-Wohlfarth model allows us to describe this evolution, as well as the typical angular dependence of specific signatures, such as the spin-flop transition of the uniaxial antiferromagnet and the switching fiel…
Dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) are nonmagnetic semiconductors doped with magnetic transition metals. The recently discovered DMS material (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$)(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ offers a unique and versatile control of the Curie temperature, $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, by decoupling the spin (Mn$^{2+}$, $S=5/2$) and charge (K$^{+}$) doping in different crystallographic layers. In an attempt to describe from first-principles calculations the role of hole doping in stabilizing ferromagnetic order, it was recently suggested that the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling $J$ between the ne…
We study theoretically a three-dimensional correlated and spin-orbit coupled system, the half-filled extended Fu-Kane-Mele-Hubbard model on a diamond lattice, focusing on the topological magnetoelectric response of the antiferromagnetic insulator phase. In the antiferromagnetic insulator phase, the Dirac-like low-energy effective Hamiltonian is obtained. Then the theta term, which results in the magnetoelectric response, is derived as a consequence of the chiral anomaly. The realization of the dynamical axion field in our model is discussed. The relation with a symmetry broken phase induced by…
We search for dynamical magnetoelectric phenomena in three-dimensional correlated systems with spin-orbit coupling. We focus on the antiferromagnetic insulator phases where the dynamical axion field is realized by the fluctuation of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. It is shown that the dynamical chiral magnetic effect, an alternating current generation by magnetic fields, emerges due to the time dependences of the order parameter such as antiferromagnetic resonance. It is also shown that the anomalous Hall effect arises due to the spatial variations of the order parameter such as antifer…
We propose a realization of chiral Majorana modes propagating on the hinges of a 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator, which was recently theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the tetradymite-type $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$-related ternary chalgogenides. These materials consist of ferromagnetically ordered 2D layers, whose magnetization direction alternates between neighboring layers, forming an antiferromagnetic order. Besides surfaces with a magnetic gap, there also exsist gapless surfaces with a single Dirac cone, which can be gapped out when proximity coupled to an $s$-w…
