Assuming a static and spherically symmetric spacetime, we propose a novel concept of the total deflection angle of a light ray. The concept is defined by the difference between the sum of internal angles of two triangles; one of the triangles lies on curved spacetime distorted by a gravitating body and the other on its background. The triangle required to define the total deflection angle can be realized by setting three laser-beam baselines as in planned space missions such as LATOR, ASTROD-GW, and LISA. Accordingly, the new total deflection angle is, in principle, measurable by gauging the internal angles of the triangles. The new definition of the total deflection angle can provide a geometrically and intuitively clear interpretation. Two formulas are proposed to calculate the total deflection angle on the basis of the Gauss--Bonnet theorem. It is shown that in the case of the Schwarzschild spacetime, the expression for the total deflection angle $α_{\rm Sch}$ reduces to Epstein--Shapiro's formula when the source of a light ray and the observer are located in an asymptotically flat region. Additionally, in the case of the Schwarzschild--de Sitter spacetime, the expression for the total deflection angle $α_{\rm SdS}$ comprises the Schwarzschild-like parts and coupling terms of the central mass $m$ and the cosmological constant $Λ$ in the form of ${\cal O}(Λm)$ instead of ${\cal O}(Λ/m)$. Furthermore, $α_{\rm SdS}$ does not include the terms characterized only by the cosmological constant $Λ$.
In order to clarify effects of the finite distance from a lens object to a light source and a receiver, the gravitational deflection of light has been recently reexamined by using the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theorem in differential geometry [Ishihara et al. 2016]. The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of a series of works initiated by the above paper. First, we provide the definition of the gravitational deflection angle of light for the finite-distance source and receiver in a static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat spacetime. We discuss the geometrical invariance…
In this paper, we re-examine the light deflection in the Schwarzschild and the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. First, supposing a static and spherically symmetric spacetime, we propose the definition of the total deflection angle $α$ of the light ray by constructing a quadrilateral $Σ^4$ on the optical reference geometry ${\cal M}^{\rm opt}$ determined by the optical metric $\bar{g}_{ij}$. On the basis of the definition of the total deflection angle $α$ and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, we derive two formulas to calculate the total deflection angle $α$; (i) the angular formula that uses four an…
The gravitational deflection angle of light for an observer and source at finite distance from a lens object has been studied by Ishihara et al. [Phys. Rev. D, 94, 084015 (2016)], based on the Gauss-Bonnet theorem with using the optical metric. Their approach to finite-distance cases is limited within an asymptotically flat spacetime. By making several assumptions, we give an interpretation of their definition from the observer's viewpoint: The observer assumes the direction of a hypothetical light emission at the observer position and makes a comparison between the fiducial emission direction…
The new method of invariant definition of the measurable angle of light deflection in the static central symmetric gravitational field is suggested. The predicted pure gravitational contribution to the deflection angle slightly differs from its classical estimate and one may hope that this discrepancy could be experimentally detected in the near future. Gravitational lensing by the light sphere of compact objects like black holes and wormholes will give us information on the compact objects. In this paper, we provide an improved strong deflection limit analysis in a general asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric spacetime. The strong deflection limit analysis also works in ultrastatic spacetimes. As an example of an ultrastatic spacetime, we reexamine the deflection angle in the strong deflection limit in an Ellis wormhole spacetime. Using the strong deflection limit, we obtain the deflection angle analytically for the Reissner-No…
Continuing work initiated in an earlier publication [Ishihara, Suzuki, Ono, Kitamura, Asada, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 94}, 084015 (2016) ], we discuss a method of calculating the bending angle of light in a static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat spacetime, especially by taking account of the finite distance from a lens object to a light source and a receiver. For this purpose, we use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to define the bending angle of light, such that the definition can be valid also in the strong deflection limit. Finally, this method is applied to Schwarzschild spacetime in order…
The definitions of gravitational work as well as work done by the total external force on a massive probe particle moving in generic spacetime backgrounds are proposed. These definitions are given in the form of scalar integrals and thus, are independent of coordinate choices. However, the dependence on the choice of observer field is essential and inevitable. The definitions are checked in the case of Minkowski, Schwarzschild, Reisner-Nordström and Kerr-Newman spacetimes and agreements with Newtonian mechanical definitions are verified in the slow motion or the far field limit.

We investigate the solution of Maxwell's equations in curved spacetime within the framework of Modified Gravity (MOG). We show that besides the null-geodesic treatment of photons in MOG, using Maxwell's equations and covariant coupling with the extra vector sector of gravitation in MOG, we can extract the equation for the propagation of light. We obtain Fermat's potential and calculate the deflection angle of light during lensing from a point-like star. Our results show that the deflection angle obtained from the solution of the wave equation in MOG for the large-scale structures with larger i…
Given the extreme accuracy reached by future global space astrometry, one needs a global relativistic modeling of observations. A relativistic definition of astrometric observables is then essential to find uniquely coordinates, parallax and proper motion of a stellar object. The standard procedure is to explicitly solve the null geodesic equations to describe the trajectory of a photon emitted by a celestial object and received by a moving observing satellite. However, this task can be avoided if one builds an astrometric set up using the recent formalism of time transfer functions.
Propagation of a localised wave function of a massive scalar field is investigated in its rest frame. The complete orthogonal Hermite-Gauss basis is presented, and the Gouy phase and Rayleigh scale notions are adapted. The leading and sub-leading gravitational corrections to a localised quantum wave function propagating in a general curved spacetime geometry are calculated within the Fermi coordinates around the time-like geodesic of its rest frame, and cross-talk coefficients among the modes are derived. It is observed that spherically symmetric modes propagate along the geodesic. However, no…
We consider the motion of light on different spacetime manifolds by calculating the deflection angle, lensing properties and by probing into the possibility of bound states. The metrics in which we examine the light motion include, among other, a general relativistic Dark Matter metric, a dirty Black Hole and a Worm Hole metric, the last two inspired by non-commutative geometry. The lensing in a Holographic Screen metric is discussed in detail. We study also the bending of light around naked singularities like, e.g., the Janis-Newman-Winicour metric and include other cases. A generic property …
A new definition of the Wigner function for quantum fields coupled to curved space--time and an external Yang--Mills field is studied on the example of a scalar and a Dirac fields. The definition uses the formalism of the tangent bundles and is explicitly covariant and gauge invariant. Derivation of collisionless quantum kinetic equations is carried out for both quantum fields by using the first order formalism of Duffin and Kemmer. The evolution of the Wigner function is governed by the quantum corrected Liouville--Vlasov equation supplemented by the generalized mass--shell constraint. The st…
In this work, we obtain the deflection angle for a boosted Kerr black hole in the weak field approximation using the optics in a curved spacetime developed by J.L. Synge in 1960. We study the behavior of light in the presence of plasma by considering different distributions: uniform plasma, singular isothermal sphere, non-singular isothermal gas sphere, and plasma in a galaxy cluster. We found that the dragging of the inertial system along with the boosted parameter $Λ$ affect the value of the deflection angle. As an application, we studied the magnification for both uniform and singular isoth…
We show how Conformal Gravity (CG) has to satisfy a fine-tuning condition to describe the rotation curves of disk galaxies without the aid of dark matter. Interpreting CG as a gauge natural theory yields conservation laws and their associated superpotentials without ambiguities. We consider the light deflection of a point-like lens and impose that the two Schwarzschild-like metrics with and without the lens are identical at infinite distances from the lens. The energy conservation law implies that the parameter $γ$ in the linear term of the metric has to vanish, otherwise the two metrics are p…
We consider a nonlinear dielectric medium surrounding a static, charged and spherically symmetric compact body which gravitational field is driven by General Relativity (GR). Considering the propagating waves on the dielectric medium, we describe the trajectory of light as geodesics on an effective geometry given by Hadamard's discontinuities. We analyze some consequences of the effective geometry in the propagation of light, with relation to the predictions of the background gravitational field, that includes corrections on the geometrical redshift and on the gravitational deflection of light…
We investigate geodesic orbits and manifolds for metrics associated with Schwarzschild geometry, considering space and time curvatures separately. For `a-temporal' space, we solve a central geodesic orbit equation in terms of elliptic integrals. The intrinsic geometry of a two-sided equatorial plane corresponds to that of a full Flamm's paraboloid. Two kinds of geodesics emerge. Both kinds may or may not encircle the hole region any number of times, crossing themselves correspondingly. Regular geodesics reach a periastron greater than the $r_S$ Schwarzschild radius, thus remaining confined to …
We study gravitational lensing by a class of zero Ricci scalar wormholes which arise as solutions in a scalar-tensor theory of gravity. An attempt is made to find a possible link between lensing features, stable/unstable photon orbits and the energy conditions on the matter required to support these spacetimes. Our analysis shows (for this class of wormholes) that light rays always exhibit a positive deflection if the energy conditions are satisfied (nonexotic matter content). In contrast, if the energy conditions are violated (exotic matter), the net deflection of a light ray may be positive,…
In this paper we propose a definition of quasifree Hadamard states for spinor fields on a curved space-time by specifying the Polarisation Set of the two-point function. We prove that the thermal equilibrium state on an ultrastatic space-time is Hadamard. We then construct an adiabatic vacuum state on a general globally hyperbolic Lorentz manifold using a factorisation of the spinorial Klein-Gordon operator. This state is pure. In what constitutes the main part of the paper, we show that it is also Hadamard. As a side result, we obtain the propagation of singularities of the spinorial Klein-Go…
We revisit the effect of cosmological constant $Λ$ on the light deflection and its role in the cosmological lens equation. First, we re-examine the motion of photon in the Schwarzschild spacetime, and explicitly describe the trajectory of photon and deflection angle $α$ up to the second-order in $G$. Then the discussion is extended to the contribution of the cosmological constant $Λ$ in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter or Kottler spacetime. Contrary to the previous arguments, we emphasize the following points: (a) the cosmological constant $Λ$ does appear in the orbital equation of light, (b) never…
The mysterious dark energy remains one of the greatest puzzles of modern science. Current detections for it are mostly indirect. The spacetime effects of dark energy can be locally described by the SdSw metric. Understanding these local effects exactly is an essential step towards the direct probe of dark energy. From first principles, we prove that dark energy can exert a repulsive dark force on astrophysical scales, different from the Newtonian attraction of both visible and dark matter. One way of measuring local effects of dark energy is through the gravitational deflection of light. We ge…
The potential conflict between torsion and gauge symmetry in the Riemann-Cartan curved space-time was noted by Kibble in his 1961 pioneering paper, and has since been discussed by many authors. Kibble suggested that, to preserve gauge symmetry, one should forgo the covariant derivative in favor of the ordinary derivative in the definition of the field strength F_μν for massless gauge theories, while for massive vector fields covariant derivatives should be adopted. This view was further emphasized by Hehl and collaborators in their influential 1976 review paper. We address the question of whet…
We will mainly discuss the measurable angle (local angle) of the light ray $ψ_P$ at the position of the observer $P$ instead of the total deflection angle (global angle) $α$ in Kerr spacetime. We will investigate not only the effect of the gravito-magnetic field or frame dragging but also the contribution of the motion of the observer with a coordinate radial velocity $v^r$ and a coordinate transverse velocity $bv^ϕ$ ($b$ is the impact parameter and $v^ϕ$ is a coordinate angular velocity) which are converted from the components of the 4-velocity of the observer $u^r$ and $u^ϕ$, respectively. B…
The mass contained in an arbitrary spacetime in general relativity is not well defined. However, for asymptotically flat spacetimes various definitions of mass have been proposed. In this paper I consider eight masses and show that some of them correspond to the active gravitational mass while the others correspond to the inertial mass. For example, the ADM mass corresponds to the inertial mass while the M$ø$ller mass corresponds to the active gravitational mass. In general the inertial and active gravitational masses are not equal. If the spacetime is vacuum at large $r$ the Einstein equation…
As an extension of our previous paper, instead of the total deflection angle $α$, we will mainly focus on discussing the measurable angle of the light ray $ψ$ at the position of the observer in Kerr--de Sitter spacetime which includes the cosmological constant $Λ$. We will investigate the contributions of the radial and transverse motions of the observer which are connected with the radial velocity $v^r$ and transverse velocity $bv^ϕ$ ($b$ is the impact parameter) as well as the spin parameter $a$ of the central object which induces the gravitomagnetic field or frame dragging and the cosmologi…
The existence of local thermal equilibrium (LTE) states for quantum field theory in the sense of Buchholz, Ojima and Roos is discussed in a model-independent setting. It is shown that for spaces of finitely many independent thermal observables there always exist states which are in LTE in any compact region of Minkowski spacetime. Furthermore, LTE states in curved spacetime are discussed and it is observed that the original definition of LTE on curved backgrounds given by Buchholz and Schlemmer needs to be modified. Under an assumption related to certain unboundedness properties of the pointli…
Causal set non-local wave operators allow both for the definition of an action for Causal set theory and the study of deviations from local physics that may have interesting phenomenological consequences. It was previously shown that, in all dimensions, the (unique) minimal discrete operators give averaged continuum non-local operators that reduce to $\Box-R/2$ in the local limit. Recently, dropping the constraint of minimality, it was shown that there exist an infinite number of discrete operators satisfying basic physical requirements and with the right local limit in flat spacetime. In this…
We present a precise definition of a conserved quantity from an arbitrary covariantly conserved current available in a general curved spacetime with Killing vectors. This definition enables us to define energy and momentum for matter by the volume integral. As a result we can compute charges of Schwarzschild and BTZ black holes by the volume integration of a delta function singularity. Employing the definition we also compute the total energy of a static compact star. It contains both the gravitational mass known as the Misner-Sharp mass in the Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation and the gravitationa…
A generalization of the notion of ellipsoids to curved Riemannian spaces is given and the possibility to use it in describing the shapes of rotating bodies in general relativity is examined. As an illustrative example, stationary, axisymmetric perfect-fluid spacetimes with a so-called confocal inside ellipsoidal symmetry are investigated in detail under the assumption that the 4-velocity of the fluid is parallel to a time-like Killing vector field. A class of perfect-fluid metrics representing interior NUT-spacetimes is obtained along with a vacuum solution with a non-zero cosmological constan…
The formalism for histories-based generalized quantum mechanics developed in two earlier papers is applied to the treatment of histories (of particles or fields or more general objects) in curved spacetimes (which need not admit foliation in spacelike hypersurfaces). The construction of the space of temporal supports (a partial semigroup generalizing the space of finite time sequences employed in traditional temporal description of histories) employs spacelike subsets of spacetime having dimensionality less than or equal to three. Definition of symmetry is sharpened by the requirement of conti…
We derive the functional Schrodinger equation for quantum fields in curved spacetime in the semiclassical limit of quantum geometrodynamics with a Gaussian incoherent dust acting as a clock field. We perform the semiclassical limit using a WKB-type expansion of the wave functional in powers of the squared Planck mass. The functional Schrodinger equation that we obtain exhibits a functional time derivative that completes the usual definition of WKB time for curved spacetime, and the usual Schrodinger-type evolution is recovered in Minkowski spacetime.

On the example of a free massless and conformally coupled scalar field, it is argued that in quantum field theory in curved spacetimes with time-like Killing field, the corresponding KMS states (generalized Gibbs ensembles) at parameter β>0 need not possess a definite temperature in the sense of the zeroth law. In fact, these states, although passive in the sense of the second law, are not always in local thermal equilibrium (LTE). A criterion characterizing LTE states with sharp local temperature is discussed. Moreover, a proposal is made for fixing the renormalization freedom of composite fi…
Quantum weak energy inequalities (QWEI) provide state-independent lower bounds on averages of the renormalised energy density of a quantum field. We derive QWEIs for the electromagnetic and massive spin-one fields in globally hyperbolic spacetimes whose Cauchy surfaces are compact and have trivial first homology group. These inequalities provide lower bounds on weighted averages of the renormalized energy density as ``measured'' along an arbitrary timelike trajectory, and are valid for arbitrary Hadamard states of the spin-one fields. The QWEI bound takes a particularly simple form for averagi…
Lyapunov exponents (LEs) are key indicators of chaos in dynamical systems. In general relativity the classical definition of LE meets difficulty because it is not coordinate invariant and spacetime coordinates lose their physical meaning as in Newtonian dynamics. We propose a new definition of relativistic LE and give its algorithm in any coordinate system, which represents the observed changing law of the space separation between two neighboring particles (an 'observer' and a 'neighbor'), and is truly coordinate invariant in a curved spacetime.
Riemann normal coordinates (RNC) at a regular event $p_0$ of a spacetime manifold $\mathcal{M}$ are constructed by imposing: (i) $g_{\textsf{ab}}|_{p_0}=η_{ab}$, and (ii) $Γ^\textsf{a}_{\phantom{\textsf a}\textsf{bc}}|_{p_0}=0$. There is, however, a third, $independent$, assumption in the definition of RNC which essentially fixes the $density$ $of$ $geodesics$ emanating from $p_0$ to its value in flat spacetime, viz.: (iii) the tangent space $\mathcal{T}_{p_0}(\mathcal{M})$ is $flat$. We relax (iii) and obtain the normal coordinates, along with the metric $g_{\textsf{ab}}$, when $\mathcal{T}_{…
We review the theory of quantum fields propagating in an arbitrary, classical, globally hyperbolic spacetime. Our review emphasizes the conceptual issues arising in the formulation of the theory and presents known results in a mathematically precise way. Particular attention is paid to the distributional nature of quantum fields, to their local and covariant character, and to microlocal spectrum conditions satisfied by physically reasonable states. We review the Unruh and Hawking effects for free fields, as well as the behavior of free fields in deSitter spacetime and FLRW spacetimes with an e…
In this work, chaotic indicators, which have been established in the framework of classical mechanics, are reformulated in the framework of general relativity in such a way that they are invariant under coordinate transformation. For achieving this, the prescription for reformulating mLCE given by [Y. Sota, S. Suzuki, and K.-I. Maeda, Classical Quantum Gravity 13, 1241 (1996)] is adopted. Thus, the geodesic deviation vector approach is applied, and the proper time is utilized as measure of time. Following the aforementioned prescription, the chaotic indicators FLI, MEGNO, GALI, and APLE are re…

Hollands and Wald's technique based on *-algebras of Wick products of field operators is strightforwardly generalized to define the stress-energy tensor operator in curved globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In particular, the locality and covariance requirement is generalized to Wick products of differentiated quantum fields. The proposed stress-energy tensor operator is conserved and reduces to the classical form if field operators are replaced by classical fields satisfying the equation of motion. The definition is based on the existence of convenient counterterms given by certain local Wick pr…
