Riemann normal coordinates (RNC) at a regular event $p_0$ of a spacetime manifold $\mathcal{M}$ are constructed by imposing: (i) $g_{\textsf{ab}}|_{p_0}=η_{ab}$, and (ii) $Γ^\textsf{a}_{\phantom{\textsf a}\textsf{bc}}|_{p_0}=0$. There is, however, a third, $independent$, assumption in the definition of RNC which essentially fixes the $density$ $of$ $geodesics$ emanating from $p_0$ to its value in flat spacetime, viz.: (iii) the tangent space $\mathcal{T}_{p_0}(\mathcal{M})$ is $flat$. We relax (iii) and obtain the normal coordinates, along with the metric $g_{\textsf{ab}}$, when $\mathcal{T}_{p_0}(\mathcal{M})$ is a maximally symmetric manifold $\widetilde{\mathcal M}_Λ$ with curvature length $|Λ|^{-1/2}$. In general, the "rest" frame defined by these coordinates is non-inertial with an additional acceleration $\boldsymbol a = - (Λ/3) \, \boldsymbol x$ depending on the curvature of tangent space. Our geometric set-up provides a convenient probe of local physics in a universe with a cosmological constant $Λ$, now embedded into the local structure of spacetime as a fundamental constant associated with a curved tangent space. We discuss classical and quantum implications of the same.
A covariant and invariant theory of navigation in curved space-time with respect to electromagnetic beacons is written in terms of J. L. Synge's two-point invariant world function. Explicit equations are given for navigation in space-time in the vicinity of the Earth in Schwarzschild coordinates and in rotating coordinates. The restricted problem of determining an observer's coordinate time when their spatial position is known is also considered.
It is seen that issues of unitarity raised by the evolution of the wave function in curved spacetime can be resolved by describing the evolution of quantum states in Minkowski tangent space. The treatment adheres closely to the orthodox interpretation that the wave function is not physical but is part of a mathematical method for the calculation of probabilities of measurement results. Minkowski tangent space refers to a non-physical configuration space used to describe quantum mechanics. The teleconnection is defined between Hilbert spaces at different points in spacetime motivated by argumen…
In this paper we establish a generally and globally valid coordinate system in curved space-time with the simultaneous hypersurface orthogonal to the time coordinate. The time coordinate can be preseted according to practical evolving process and keep synchronous with the evolution of the realistic world. In this coordinate system, it is convenient to express the physical laws and to calculate physical variables with clear geometrical meaning. We call it "natural coordinate system". The constructing method for the natural coordinate system is concretely provided, and its physical and geometric…
We show that there exists a duality between the local coordinates and the solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation in curved spacetime in the same sense as in the Minkowski spacetime. However, the duality in curved spacetime does not have the same generality as in flat spacetime and it holds only if the system satisfies certain constraints. We derive these constraints and the basic equations of duality and discuss the implications in the quantum theory.
The success of the S-matrix in quantum field theory in Minkowski spacetime naturally demands the extension of the construction of the S-matrix in a general curved spacetime in a covariant manner. However, it is well-known that a global description of the S-matrix may not exist in an arbitrary curved spacetime. Here, we give a local construction of S-matrix in quantum field theory in curved spacetime using Riemann-normal coordinates which mimics the methods, generally used in Minkowski spacetime. Using this construction, the scattering amplitudes and cross-sections of some scattering processes …
It is shown that the calculation of Dirac operator for the spherical coordinate system with spherical Dirac matrices and using the spin connection formalism is in the contradiction with the definition of standard Dirac operator in the spherical Minkowski coordinate system. It is shown that such contradiction one can avoid by introducing a canonical conjugated covariant derivative for the spinor field. The Dirac equation solution on the Reissner - Nordström background is obtained. The solution describes a bound state of a charged particle.
With an aim to include the contribution of surface tension in the action of the boundary, we define the tangential pressure in terms of surface tension and Normal curvature in a more naturally geometric way. First, we show that the negative tangential pressure is independent of the four-velocity of a very thin hyper-surface. Second, we relate the 3-pressure of a surface layer to the normal curvature and the surface tension. Third, we relate the surface tension to the energy of the surface layer. Four, we show that the delta like energy flows across the hyper-surface will be zero for such a rep…
The Dirac equation in curved spacetimes is formulated using coordinate-free notation. A Lagrangean density which corresponds to the subject equation is presented. The subject equation is invariant under a local rotation of the coframe. The current is independent of the local orientation of the coframe and it is conserved. The subject equation has an equivalent formulation which uses the Christoffel gamma. The stress-energy tensor is calculated.
Using tangent bundle geometry we construct an equivalent reformulation of classical field theory on flat spacetimes which simultaneously encodes the perspectives of multiple observers. Its generalization to curved spacetimes realizes a new type of non-minimal coupling of the fields, and is shown to admit a canonical quantization procedure. For the resulting quantum theory we demonstrate the emergence of a particle interpretation, fully consistent with general relativistic geometry. The path-dependency of parallel transport forces each observer to carry his own quantum state; we find that the c…
The Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC) states that the integral along a complete null geodesic of the projection of the stress-energy tensor onto the tangent vector to the geodesic cannot be negative. Exotic spacetimes, such as those allow wormholes or the construction of time machines are possible in general relativity only if ANEC is violated along achronal geodesics. Starting from a conjecture that flat-space quantum inequalities apply with small corrections in spacetimes with small curvature, we prove that ANEC is obeyed by a minimally-coupled, free quantum scalar field on any achronal …
A new definition of the Wigner function for quantum fields coupled to curved space--time and an external Yang--Mills field is studied on the example of a scalar and a Dirac fields. The definition uses the formalism of the tangent bundles and is explicitly covariant and gauge invariant. Derivation of collisionless quantum kinetic equations is carried out for both quantum fields by using the first order formalism of Duffin and Kemmer. The evolution of the Wigner function is governed by the quantum corrected Liouville--Vlasov equation supplemented by the generalized mass--shell constraint. The st…
I present a way to visualize the concept of curved spacetime. The result is a curved surface with local coordinate systems (Minkowski Systems) living on it, giving the local directions of space and time. Relative to these systems, special relativity holds. The method can be used to visualize gravitational time dilation, the horizon of black holes, and cosmological models. The idea underlying the illustrations is first to specify a field of timelike four-velocities. Then, at every point, one performs a coordinate transformation to a local Minkowski system comoving with the given four-velocity. …
We construct a tangent bundle exponential map and locally autoparallel coordinates for geometries based on a general connection on the tangent bundle of a manifold. As concrete application we use these new coordinates for Finslerian geometries and obtain Finslerian geodesic coordinates. They generalise normal coordinates known from metric geometry to Finsler geometric manifolds and it turns out that they are identical to the Douglas-Thomas normal coordinates introduced earlier. We expand the fundamental geometry function of a Finsler spacetime in these new coordinates and find that it is const…
We study the real, massive Klein-Gordon field on a $C^\infty$ globally-hyperbolic background space-time with compact Cauchy hypersurfaces. In particular, the parametrization of this system as initiated by Dirac and Kuchař is put on a rigorous basis. The discussion is focussed on the structure of the set of spacelike embeddings of the Cauchy manifold into the space-time, and on the associated $e$-tensor density bundles and their tangent and cotangent bundles. The dynamics of the field is expressed as a set of automorphisms of the space of initial data in which each pair of embeddings defines on…
Phase space path integral is worked out in a riemannian geometry, by employing a prescription for the infinitesimal propagator that takes riemannian normal coordinates and momenta on an equal footing. The operator ordering induced by this prescription leads to the DeWitt curvature coupling in the Schrodinger equation.
Wick rotation is usually performed by rotating the time coordinate to imaginary values. In a general curved spacetime, the notion of a time coordinate is ambiguous. We note here, that within the tetrad formalism of general relativity, it is possible to perform a Wick rotation directly in the tangent space using considerably less structure: a timelike, future pointing vector field, which need not be Killing or hypersurface orthogonal. This method has the advantage of yielding real Euclidean metrics, even in spacetimes which are not static. When applied to a black hole exterior, the null generat…
Bargmann-Wigner equations and their solutions are studied in (3+1)-dimensional curved spacetime. Fermion-Boson correspondence for bi-spinor case is studied through the Bargmann-Wigner equations and solutions over curved spacetime. As an application to scattering phenomena of massive Fermions and Bosons on the rotating black holes, the superradiance with negative energy $(ω<0)$ and positive effective energy in co-rotating coordinate system near horizon $(ω-mΩ_{H}>0)$ is possible to occur as stable physical states in Kerr spacetime.
A natural mapping of paths in a curved space onto the paths in the corresponding (tangent) flat space may be used to reduce the curved-space-time path integral to the flat-space-time path integral. The dynamics of the particle in a curved space-time is expressed then in terms of an integral over paths in the flat (Minkowski) space-time. This may be called quantum equivalence principle. Contrary to the known DeWitt's definition of a curved-space path integral, the present definition leads to the covariant equation of motion without a scalar curvature term. The reduction of a curved-space path i…
Different approaches are compared to formulation of quantum mechanics of a particle on the curved spaces. At first, the canonical, quasi-classical and path integration formalisms are considered for quantization of geodesic motion on the Rimannian configurational spaces. A unique rule of ordering of operators in the canonical formalism and a unique definition of the path integral are established and, thus, a part of ambiguities in the quantum counterpart of geodesic motion is removed. A geometric interpretation is proposed for non-invariance of the quantum mechanics on coordinate transformation…
We investigate geodesic orbits and manifolds for metrics associated with Schwarzschild geometry, considering space and time curvatures separately. For `a-temporal' space, we solve a central geodesic orbit equation in terms of elliptic integrals. The intrinsic geometry of a two-sided equatorial plane corresponds to that of a full Flamm's paraboloid. Two kinds of geodesics emerge. Both kinds may or may not encircle the hole region any number of times, crossing themselves correspondingly. Regular geodesics reach a periastron greater than the $r_S$ Schwarzschild radius, thus remaining confined to …
The spin-curvature coupling as captured by the so-called Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations is the leading order effect of the finite size of a rapidly rotating compact astrophysical object moving in a curved background. It is also a next-to-leading order effect in the phase of gravitational waves emitted by extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs), which are expected to become observable by the LISA space mission. Additionally, exploring the Hamiltonian formalism for spinning bodies is important for the construction of the so-called Effective-One-Body waveform models that should eventuall…
In this paper, we theoretically investigate the time dilation and Doppler effect in curved space-time from the perspective of quantum field theory (QFT). A Coordinate Transformation which Maintains the Period of Clocks is introduced, and such coordinate transformation is named as CTMPC throughout this paper. By analogy with the Lorentz transformation in Minkowski space-time, CTMPC is a correct transformation in curved space-times in a sense that it shows the correct relation between the time measured by the two observers, moreover, Lorentz transformation is just a special case of CTMPC applied…
The propagator of a spinless particle is calculated from the quantum mechanical path integral formalism in static curved spacetimes endowed with event-horizons. A toy model, the Gui spacetime, and the 2D and 4D Schwarzschild black holes are considered. The role of the topology of the coordinates configuration space is emphasised in this framework. To cover entirely the above spacetimes with a single set of coordinates, tortoise coordinates are extended to complex values. It is shown that the homotopic properties of the complex tortoise configuration space imply the thermal behaviour of the pro…
We show in general that for a relativistic theory with curved momentum space, i.e.~a theory with deformed relativistic symmetries, the physical velocity of particles coincides with their group velocity. This clarifies a long-standing question about the discrepancy between coordinate and group velocity for this kind of theories. The first evidence that this was the case had been obtained at linear order in the deformation parameter in Phys.Lett.B700(2011)150 for the specific case of $κ$-momentum space. The proof was based on the recent understanding of how relative locality affects these scenar…
The worldline approach to Quantum Field Theory (QFT) allows to efficiently compute several quantities, such as one-loop effective actions, scattering amplitudes and anomalies, which are linked to particle path integrals on the circle. A helpful tool in the worldline formalism on the circle, are string-inspired (SI) Feynman rules, which correspond to a specific way of factoring out a zero mode. In flat space this is known to generate no difficulties. In curved space, it was shown how to correctly achieve the zero mode factorization by applying BRST techniques to fix a shift symmetry. Using spec…
We analyze the classical approximations made in "The general relativistic effects to the magnetic moment in the Earth's gravity", originally published as "Post-Newtonian effects of Dirac particle in curved spacetime - I : magnetic moment in curved spacetime", and work out precisely where in the argument the mistakes are made. We show explicitly that any difference vanishes when properly distinguishing between coordinate and physical distance. In doing this, we illustrate some of the pitfalls in using GR to make predictions.
We construct a theory of particles moving in curved both momentum space and spacetime, being a generalization of Relative Locality. We find that in order to construct such theory, with desired symmetries, including the general coordinate invariance, we have to use non local position variables. It turns out that free particles move on geodesics and momentum dependent translations of Relative Locality are replaced with momentum dependent geodesic deviations.
We study spacetime singularities in a general five-dimensional braneworld with curved branes satisfying four-dimensional maximal symmetry. The bulk is supported by an analog of perfect fluid with the time replaced by the extra coordinate. We show that contrary to the existence of finite distance singularities from the brane location in any solution with flat (Minkowski) branes, in the case of curved branes there are singularity-free solutions for a range of equations of state compatible with the null energy condition.
In this work, we deepen the correspondence between Generalized Uncertainty Principles (GUPs) and quantum dynamics on curved momentum space. In particular, we investigate the linear and quadratic GUP. Similarly to earlier work, the resulting curvature tensor in the dual theory is proportional to the coordinate non-commutativity of the original formulation.
The neutrino propagating in curved spacetimes, e.g. around black holes, in early curved universe, violates Lorentz and then CPT symmetry, at least in the local coordinate. This occurs due to coupling of spin of the neutrino to background spin connection which modifies the underlying dispersion relation. This results in the neutrino asymmetry and hence as a consequence neutrino oscillation probability gets affected.
We present an algorithm for constructing the Wilson operator product expansion (OPE) for perturbative interacting quantum field theory in general Lorentzian curved spacetimes, to arbitrary orders in perturbation theory. The remainder in this expansion is shown to go to zero at short distances in the sense of expectation values in arbitrary Hadamard states. We also establish a number of general properties of the OPE coefficients: (a) they only depend (locally and covariantly) upon the spacetime metric and coupling constants, (b) they satisfy an associativity property, (c) they satisfy a renorma…
The relativistic acceleration of an electron in a uniform gravitational field is calculated numerically using the generalization of the Dirac equation to curved spacetime. Equivalent results are also obtained analytically using an iterative approach that is not based on the WKB approximation, which has been used extensively in the past. The acceleration is found to be proportional to a factor of $(1-3v^2/c^2)$ using Schwarzschild coordinates, which is consistent with the classical geodesic of a particle. These techniques may be useful in resolving the differences between commonly-used approxim…
Starting with the Nambu-Goto action of the braneworld embedded in a curved bulk, we derive the precise expressions for the quantum induced effects due to small fluctuations of the brane. To define the brane fluctuations invariantly, we introduce the Riemannian coordinate system for the subspace normal to the braneworld. It will turn out that we can systematically incorporate the effects of bulk curvature, and that the induced effects depend on the extrinsic curvature and the normal-connection gauge field as well as on bulk curvature components at the brane.
A quantum mechanical path integral derivation is given of a thermal propagator in non-static Gui spacetime. The thermal nature of the propagator is understood in terms of homotopically non-trivial paths in the configuration space appropriate to tortoise coordinates. The connection to thermal emission from collapsing black holes is discussed.
Intrinsic and extrinsic geometric properties of string world sheets in curved space-time background are explored. In our formulation, the only dynamical degrees of freedom of the string are its immersion coordinates. Classical equation of motion and the space-time energy-momentum tensor of the string are obtained. The equations of motion for the extrinsic curvature action are second order for the scalar mean curvature of the world sheet. 1-loop divergent terms are calculated using the background field method. Asymptotic freedom of the extrinsic curvature coupling is established.
The heat kernel in curved space-time is computed to fourth order in a strict expansion in the number of covariant derivatives. The computation is made for arbitrary non abelian gauge and scalar fields and for the Riemann connection in the coordinate sector. The expressions obtained hold for arbitrary tensor representations of the matter field. Complete results are presented for the diagonal matrix elements and for the trace of the heat kernel operator. In addition, Chan's formula is extended to curved space-time. As a byproduct, the bosonic effective action is also obtained to fourth order.
We present a new approach to the problem of the thermodynamical equilibrium of a quantum relativistic fluid in a curved spacetime in the limit of small curvature. We calculate the mean value of local operators by expanding the four-temperature Killing vector field in Riemann normal coordinates about the same spacetime point and we derive corrections with respect to the flat spacetime expressions. Thereby, we clarify the origin of the terms proportional to Riemann and Ricci tensors introduced in general hydrodynamic expansion of the stress-energy tensor.
We show that a notion of one-particle state and the corresponding vacuum state exists in general curved backgrounds for spin $\frac{1}{2}$ fields. A curved spacetime can be equipped with a coordinate system in which the metric component $g_{--}=0$. We separate the component of the left-handed massless Dirac field which is annihilated by the null vector $\partial_-$ and compute the corresponding Feynman propagator. We find that the propagating modes are localized on two dimensional subspaces and the Feynman propagator is similar to the Feynman propagator of chiral fermions in two dimensional Mi…
Theoretical possibilities of models of gravity with dynamical signature are discussed. The different scenarios of the signature change are proposed in the framework of Einstein-Cartan gravity. We consider, subsequently, the dynamical signature in the model of the complex manifold with complex coordinates and complex metric introduced, a complexification of the manifold and coordinates through new gauge fields, an additional gauge symmetry for the Einsten-Cartan vierbein fields and non-flat tangent space for the metric in the Einstein-Cartan gravity. A new small parameter, which characterizes a…
A fundamentally different approach to path integral quantum mechanics in curved space-time is presented, as compared to the standard approaches currently available in the literature. Within the context of scalar particle propagation in a locally curved background, such as described by Fermi or Riemann normal co-ordinates, this approach requires use of a constructed operator to rotate the initial, intermediate, and final position ket vectors onto their respective local tangent spaces, defined at each local time step along some arbitrary classical reference worldline. Local time translation is d…
Vierbeins provide a bridge between the curved space of general relativity and the flat tangent space of special relativity. Both spaces should be causal and spin. We posit intertwining the two symmetries of spacetime bundles asymmetrically; disentangling the non-trivial Id between the base, curved space as a locally ringed space and its Zariski (co-)tangent space. This involves the introduction of a "two-sided vector space" as a section of the smooth, stratified diffeomorphism bundle of spacetime. A change of paradigm from the fiber bundle approach ensues where the bundle space takes an active…
