We compare several definitions of photon helicity (magnetic, electric, electromagnetic) present in literature. In curved spacetime quantum anomalies can spoil helicity conservation inducing, according to these definitions, different effects on photons: either rotation of linear polarization or production of circular polarization. We derive the Noether current associated with duality transformations starting from manifestly invariant Lagrangians.
The trace anomaly for a conformally invariant scalar field theory on a curved manifold of positive constant curvature with boundary is considered. In the context of a perturbative evaluation of the theory's effective action explicit calculations are given for those contributions to the conformal anomaly which emerge as a result of free scalar propagation as well as from scalar self-interactions up to second order in the scalar self-coupling. The renormalisation-group behaviour of the theory is, subsequently, exploited in order to advance the evaluation of the conformal anomaly to third order i…
It is well known that not every symmetry of a classical field theory is also a symmetry of its quantum version. When this occurs, we speak of quantum anomalies. The existence of anomalies imply that some classical Noether charges are no longer conserved in the quantum theory. In this paper, we discuss a new example for quantum electromagnetic fields propagating in the presence of gravity. We argue that the symmetry under electric-magnetic duality rotations of the source-free Maxwell action is anomalous in curved spacetimes. The classical Noether charge associated with these transformations acc…
Using the Fujikawa and the heat-kernel methods we make a complete and detailed computation of the global, gauge and gravitational anomalies present in the Standard Model defined on a curved space time with torsion. We find new contributions coming from curvature and torsion terms to the leptonic number anomaly (so that $B-L$ is not conserved any more), to the $U(1)_Y$ gauge and to the mixed $U(1)_Y$-gravitational anomalies, but the gauge anomaly cancellation conditions on the hypercharges remain the same. We also find that the condition, usually related to the cancellation of the mixed $U(1)_Y…
We study propagation of high-frequency electromagnetic waves in a curved spacetime. We demonstrate how a modification of the standard geometric optics allows one to include the helicity dependent corrections into the equations of motion of circularly polarized beams of radiation. As a result, polarized light rays are still null but not geodesic curves. To achieve these results we construct null frames associated with a set of (non-geodesic) null rays and use these frames for description of the high-frequency wave propagation. We call this approach spin optics approximation. It is completely co…
We consider averaged null energy conditions (ANEC) for strongly coupled quantum field theories in even (two and four) dimensional curved spacetimes by applying the no-bulk-shortcut principle in the context of the AdS/CFT duality. In the same context but in odd-dimensions, the present authors previously derived a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC), which is a version of the ANEC with a certain weight function for conformal invariance. In even-dimensions, however, one has to deal with gravitational conformal anomalies, which make relevant formulas much more complicated …
Considerable interest has recently been expressed regarding the issue of whether or not quantum field theory on a fixed but curved background spacetime satisfies the averaged null energy condition (ANEC). A comment by Wald and Yurtsever [Phys. Rev. D43, 403 (1991)] indicates that in general the answer is no. In this note I explore this issue in more detail, and succeed in characterizing a broad class of spacetimes in which the ANEC is guaranteed to be violated. Finally, I add some comments regarding ANEC violation in Schwarzschild spacetime.
Particle creation by strong and time-varying backgrounds is a robust prediction of quantum field theory. Another well-established feature of field theory is that classical symmetries do not always extend to the quantized theory. When this occurs, we speak of quantum anomalies. In this contribution we discuss the entwining relationship between both predictions, relating chiral anomalies with an underlying process of particle creation. Within this context, we will also argue that the symmetry under electric-magnetic duality rotations of the source-free Maxwell theory is anomalous in curved space…
Path integrals for particles in curved spaces can be used to compute trace anomalies in quantum field theories, and more generally to study properties of quantum fields coupled to gravity in first quantization. While their construction in arbitrary coordinates is well understood, and known to require the use of a regularization scheme, in this article we take up an old proposal of constructing the path integral by using Riemann normal coordinates. The method assumes that curvature effects are taken care of by a scalar effective potential, so that the particle lagrangian is reduced to that of a…
A comparative analysis of the Mathisson-Papapetrou and Pomeransky-Khriplovich equations is presented. Motion of spinning particles and their spins in gravitational fields and noninertial frames is considered. The angular velocity of spin precession defined by the Pomeransky-Khriplovich equations depends on the choice of the tetrad. The connection of such a dependence with the Thomas precession is established. General properties of spin interactions with gravitational fields are discussed. It is shown that dynamics of classical and quantum spins in curved spacetimes is identical. A manifestatio…
We study relativistic effects on polarised photons that travel in a curved spacetime. As a concrete application, we consider photons in the gravitational field of the Earth, on a closed path that starts at a terrestial laboratory, is reflected at one or more satellites, and finally returns to the laboratory. We find that the photons acquire a non-trivial Wigner phase already when the gravitational field is static, such as the Schwarzschild spacetime, where previous studies have found a trivial Wigner phase for closed photon paths. A gauge-invariant description of this nontrivial Wigner phase r…
Chiral symmetries in field theory are typically affected by an anomaly in the quantum theory. This anomaly emerges when one introduces an interaction with a Yang-Mills or gravitational background. Physical applications of this quantum effect have been traditionally connected to topological questions of the background field and the study of instantons. We show here how one can alternatively find situations of physical interest that only involve ordinary, but dynamical solutions of the background field equations. More precisely, we show that solutions to the Einstein (Maxwell) equations are able…
Particles in a curved space are classically described by a nonlinear sigma model action that can be quantized through path integrals. The latter require a precise regularization to deal with the derivative interactions arising from the nonlinear kinetic term. Recently, for maximally symmetric spaces, simplified path integrals have been developed: they allow to trade the nonlinear kinetic term with a purely quadratic kinetic term (linear sigma model). This happens at the expense of introducing a suitable effective scalar potential, which contains the information on the curvature of the space. T…
Many-body systems with chiral fermions exhibit anomalous transport phenomena originated from quantum anomalies. Based on quantum field theory, we derive the kinetic theory for chiral fermions interacting with an external electromagnetic field and a background curved geometry. The resultant framework respects the covariance under the U(1) gauge, local Lorentz, and diffeomorphic transformations. It is particularly useful to study the gravitational or non-inertial effects for chiral systems. As the first application, we study the chiral dynamics in a rotating coordinate and clarify the roles of t…
A number of general issues relating to superluminal photon propagation in gravitational fields are explored. The possibility of superluminal, yet causal, photon propagation arises because of Equivalence Principle violating interactions induced by vacuum polarisation in QED in curved spacetime. Two general theorems are presented: first, a polarisation sum rule which relates the polarisation averaged velocity shift to the matter energy-momentum tensor and second, a `horizon theorem' which ensures that the geometric event horizon for black hole spacetimes remains a true horizon for real photon pr…
The existence of trace anomalies for conformally coupled quantum fields in curved spacetimes, despite the vanishing of the trace of the conformally invariant classical stress-energy tensor, was firmly established in the 1970's, and expressions for the anomalous trace of the semi-classical quantum stress-energy tensor constructed from the curvature tensors of the background spacetime were proven to hold independent of the quantum state of the field. Subsequently, effective actions were devised whose variation with respect to the metric gives a conserved "anomalous stress-energy tensor" or ASET.…
This work establishes a relation between chiral anomalies in curved spacetimes and the radiative content of the gravitational field. In particular, we show that a flux of circularly polarized gravitational waves triggers the spontaneous creation of photons with net circular polarization from the quantum vacuum. Using waveform catalogues we identify precessing binary black holes as astrophysical configurations that emit such gravitational radiation, and then solve the fully non-linear Einstein's equations with numerical relativity to evaluate the net effect. The quantum amplitude for a merger i…
It is commonly assumed that quantum field theory arises by applying ordinary quantum mechanics to the low energy effective degrees of freedom of a more fundamental theory defined at ultra-high-energy/short-wavelength scales. We shall argue here that, even for free quantum fields, there are holistic aspects of quantum field theory that cannot be properly understood in this manner. Specifically, the ``subtractions'' needed to define nonlinear polynomial functions of a free quantum field in curved spacetime are quite simple and natural from the quantum field theoretic point of view, but are at be…
