Focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) is a powerful technique for 3D-printing of complex nanodevices. However, for resolutions below 10 nm, it struggles to control size, morphology and composition of the structures, due to a lack of molecular-level understanding of the underlying irradiation-driven chemistry (IDC). Computational modelling is a tool to comprehend and further optimise FEBID-related technologies. Here we utilise a novel multiscale methodology which couples Monte Carlo simulations for radiation transport with irradiation-driven molecular dynamics for simulating IDC with atomistic resolution. Through an in depth analysis of W(CO)$_6$ deposition on SiO$_2$ and its subsequent irradiation with electrons, we provide a comprehensive description of the FEBID process and its intrinsic operation. Our analysis reveals that these simulations deliver unprecedented results in modelling the FEBID process, demonstrating an excellent agreement with available experimental data of the simulated nanomaterial composition, microstructure and growth rate as a function of the primary beam parameters.
Cobalt-containing deposits from Cobalt carbonyl are experimentally produced and their composition is measured. The Cobalt concentration is found to be readily tunable between 20 and 70 at.% by variation of the dwell time. The variations in metallic concentration are explained by co-deposition of hydrocarbons present in the chamber background pressure.
Fe-Si binary compounds have been fabricated by focused electron beam induced deposition by the alternating use of iron pentacarbonyl, Fe(CO)5, and neopentasilane, Si5H12 as precursor gases. The fabrication procedure consisted in preparing multilayer structures which were treated by low-energy electron irradiation and annealing to induce atomic species intermixing. In this way we are able to fabricate FeSi and Fe3Si binary compounds from [Fe=Si]2 and [Fe3=Si]2 multilayers, as shown by transmission electron microscopy investigations. This fabrication procedure is useful to obtain nanostructured …
Diverse processes -- e.g., environmental pollution, groundwater remediation, oil recovery, filtration, and drug delivery -- involve the transport of colloidal particles in porous media. Using confocal microscopy, we directly visualize this process in situ and thereby identify the fundamental mechanisms by which particles are distributed throughout a medium. At high injection pressures, hydrodynamic stresses cause particles to be continually deposited on and eroded from the solid matrix -- notably, forcing them to be distributed throughout the entire medium. By contrast, at low injection pressu…
In the majority of cases nanostructures prepared by focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) employing an organometallic precursor contain predominantly carbon-based ligand dissociation products. This is unfortunate with regard to using this high-resolution direct-write approach for the preparation of nanostructures for various fields, such as mesoscopic physics, micromagnetism, electronic correlations, spin-dependent transport and numerous applications. Here we present an in-situ cleaning approach to obtain pure Co-FEBID nanostructures. The purification procedure lies in the exposure …
The focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) process was used by employing a Gemini SEM with a beam characteristic of 1keV and 24pA for the deposition of pillars and line shaped deposits with heights between 9nm to 1um and widths from 5nm to 0.5um. All structures have been analyzed to their composition looking at a desired Si : O : C content of 1: 2 : 0. The C content of the structure was found to be ~over 60% for older deposits kept in air (~at room temperature) and less than 50% for younger deposits, only 12 hours old. Using a deposition of Si(OEt)4 at high rates and a deposition tem…
The deposition of boron-doped amorphous carbon thin films on SiO2 substrate was achieved via a focused ion beam-assisted chemical vapor deposition of triphenyl borane (C18H15B) and triphenyl borate (C18H15BO3). The existence of boron in the deposited film from triphenyl borane, with a precursor temperature of 90 °C, was confirmed by a core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The film exhibited a semiconducting behavior with a band gap of 285 meV. Although the band gap was decreased to 197 meV after an annealing process, the film was still semiconductor. Additionally, a drastic red…
We present the application of an evolutionary genetic algorithm for the in-situ optimization of nanostructures prepared by focused electron-beam-induced deposition. It allows us to tune the properties of the deposits towards highest conductivity by using the time gradient of the measured in-situ rate of change of conductance as fitness parameter for the algorithm. The effectiveness of the procedure is presented for the precursor W(CO)6 as well as for post-treatment of Pt-C deposits obtained by dissociation of MeCpPt(Me)3. For W(CO)6-based structures an increase of conductivity by one order of …
Superconducting nanowires can be fabricated by decomposition of an organometallic gas using a focused beam of Ga ions. However, physical damage and unintentional doping often results from the exposure to the ion beam, motivating the search for a means to achieve similar structures with a beam of electrons instead of ions. This has so far remained an experimental challenge. We report the fabrication of superconducting tungsten nanowires by electron-beam-induced-deposition, with critical temperature of 2.0 K and critical magnetic field of 3.7 T, and compare them with superconducting wires made w…
We investigate the degradation of the magnetic moment of a 300 nm thick FePt film induced by Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling. A $1~μ\mathrm{m} \times 8~μ\mathrm{m}$ rod is milled out of a film by a FIB process and is attached to a cantilever by electron beam induced deposition. Its magnetic moment is determined by frequency-shift cantilever magnetometry. We find that the magnetic moment of the rod is $μ= 1.1 \pm 0.1 \times 10 ^{-12} \mathrm{Am}^2$, which implies that 70% of the magnetic moment is preserved during the FIB milling process. This result has important implications for atom trapping …
We present a first-principles-based multiscale simulation framework for quantitative predictions of the high-energy part of the Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS) spectra of amorphous molecular solids. The approach combines a deposition simulation, many-body Green's Function Theory, polarizable film-embedding, and multimode electron-vibrational coupling and provides a molecular-level view on the interactions and processes giving rise to spectral features. This insight helps bridging the current gap between experimental UPS and theoretical models as accurate analyses are hampered by t…
Using focused-electron-beam-induced deposition, Cobalt magnetic nanospheres with diameter ranging between 100 nm and 300 nm are grown at the tip of ultra-soft cantilevers. By monitoring the mechanical resonance frequency of the cantilever as a function of the applied magnetic field, the hysteresis curve of these individual nanospheres are measured. This enables to evaluate their saturation magnetization, found to be around 430 emu/cm^3 independently of the size of the particle, and to infer that the magnetic vortex state is the equilibrium configuration of these nanospheres at remanence.
Electron beam induced deposition of amorphous carbon finds several uses in microlithography, surface micromachining, and the manufacturing of micro- and nanomechanical devices. This process also occurs unintentionally in vacuum chambers of electron microscopes and interferes with normal image acquisition by reducing resolution and causing charging effects. In this work, we show that the resonance frequency of a micromechanical oscillator can be significantly affected by exposing it to a focused electron beam, which induces local carbonization on the surface of the oscillator, resulting in incr…
Controlling hydrocarbon transport and electron beam induced deposition on single layer graphene: toward atomic scale synthesis in the scanning transmission electron microscope
Nanogranular material systems are promising for a variety of applications in research and development. Their physical properties are often determined by grain sizes, shapes, mutual distances and by the chemistry of the embedding matrix With focused electron beam induced deposition arbitrarily shaped nanocomposite materials can be designed, where metallic, nanogranular structures are embedded in a carbonaceous matrix. Using "post-growth" electron beam curing, these materials can be tuned for improved electric transport or mechanical behavior. Such an optimization necessitates a thorough underst…
We have prepared iron microwires in a combination of focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) and autocatalytic growth from the iron pentacarbonyl, Fe(CO)5, precursor gas under UHV conditions. The electrical transport properties of the microwires were investigated and it was found that the temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistivity (rhoxx) shows a typical metallic behaviour with a room temperature value of about 88 microΩ cm. In order to investigate the magnetotransport properties we have measured the isothermal Hall-resistivities in the range between 4.2 K and 260 K. From …

We calculate the energy deposition by very short laser pulses in SiO_2 (alpha-quartz) with a view to establishing systematics for predicting damage and nanoparticle production. The theoretical framework is time-dependent density functional theory, implemented by the real-time method in a multiscale representation. For the most realistic simulations we employ a meta-GGA Kohn-Sham potential similar to that of Becke and Johnson. We find that the deposited energy in the medium can be accurately modeled as a function of the local electromagnetic pulse fluence. The energy-deposition function can in …
Bending and vibration tests performed inside the scanning electron microscope were used to mechanically characterize high-aspect pillars grown by focused electron-beam (FEB) induced deposition from the precursor Cu(C5HF6O2)2. Supported by finite element (FE) analysis the Young's modulus was determined from load-deflection measurements using cantilever-based force sensing and the material density from additional resonance vibration analysis. The pillar material consisted of a carbonaceous (C, O, F, H containing) matrix which embeds 5...10 at. % Cu deposited at 5 keV and 20 keV primary electron …
Grain boundaries in graphene are inherent in wafer-scale samples prepared by chemical vapor deposition. They can strongly influence the mechanical properties and electronic and heat transport in graphene. In this work, we employ extensive molecular dynamics simulations to study thermal transport in large suspended polycrystalline graphene samples. Samples of different controlled grain sizes are prepared by a recently developed efficient multiscale approach based on the phase field crystal model. In contrast to previous works, our results show that the scaling of the thermal conductivity with t…
The influence of the combined effects of substrate-induced strain, finite size and electron irradiation-induced defects have been studied on individual micron-sized domains of the organic charge transfer compound tetrathiafulvalene-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TTF-TCNQ) by temperature-dependent conductivity and current-voltage measurements. The individual domains have been isolated by focused ion beam etching and electrically contacted by focused ion and electron beam induced deposition of metallic contacts. The temperature-dependent conductivity follows a variable range hopping behavior which sh…
We studied the influence of 30keV Ga$^+$-ions -- commonly used in focused ion beam (FIB) devices -- on the transport properties of thin crystalline graphite flake, La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ and Co thin films. The changes of the electrical resistance were measured in-situ during irradiation and also the temperature and magnetic field dependence before and after irradiation. Our results show that the transport properties of these materials strongly change at Ga$^+$ fluences much below those used for patterning and ion beam induced deposition (IBID), limiting seriously the use of FIB when the i…
The present paper intends to be a new study of a widely used precursor in nanostructure deposition and FEBID processes with a focus on its fragmentation at collisions with low-energy electrons. Newer developments in nanotechnology with applications to Focused Electron Beam Induced Deposition (FEBID) and Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUVL), based on irradiation-induced chemistry come with advances in the size of the nanostructures at the surface and their flexibility in creating highly complex 3D structures. The deformation in the main structures of the FEBID process characterized by elongat…
The Ni(CO)4, Cr(CO)6, Co(CO)3NO are some of the most common precursors used for the focused electron-induced deposition. Some of the compounds, even though extensively used have high requirements when it comes to handling, being explosives, highly flammable, and with high toxicity levels, as is the case of Ni(CO)4. We are employing simulations to determine values that are hard to determine experimentally, and compare them with DFT calculations and experimental data where available. Using Quantemol-N cross-sections simulations for dissociative electron attachment (DEA) at low electron energy, 0…
