Cobalt-containing deposits from Cobalt carbonyl are experimentally produced and their composition is measured. The Cobalt concentration is found to be readily tunable between 20 and 70 at.% by variation of the dwell time. The variations in metallic concentration are explained by co-deposition of hydrocarbons present in the chamber background pressure.
We present a comparative study on the influence of applied magnetic field on the resistance of $C_{1-x}Co_x$ thin films (with $x=0.1$, $0.15$ and $0.2$) grown on $Si$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition technique. It is found that the behavior of magnetoresistance (MR) drastically depends on the temperature. Namely, at low temperatures MR is positive and its behavior is governed by the field mediated weak localization scenario. While at high temperatures MR turns negative and its behavior is dominated by electron scattering on ferromagnetic cobalt atoms.
Highly-ordered and spatially-coherent cobalt slanted columnar thin films were deposited by glancing angle deposition onto silicon substrates, and subsequently oxidized by annealing at 475 $^{\circ}$C. Scanning electron microscopy, Raman scattering, generalized ellipsometry, and density functional theory investigations reveal shape-invariant transformation of the slanted nanocolumns from metallic to transparent metal-oxide core-shell structures with properties characteristic of spinel cobalt oxide. We find passivation of Co-SCTFs yielding CoAl$_2$O$_3$ core-shell structures produced by conforma…
We have deposited Co films on the GaAs(001) surface by using an e-beam evaporation method. The thicknesses of the Co films are measured by using x-ray reflectivity and Rutherford backscattering. The magnetic properties of the films have been measured using superconducting quantum interference device. The magnetization of the films was found to decrease with increasing film thickness. The slight degradation of magnetic properties is attributed to increasing roughness on the Co surface or the Co/GaAs interface during the Co deposition.
Using focused electron-beam-induced deposition (FEBID), we fabricate vertical, platinum-coated cobalt nanowires with a controlled three-dimensional structure. The latter is engineered to feature bends along the height: these are used as pinning sites for domain walls, the presence of which we investigate using X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) coupled to PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM). The vertical geometry of our sample combined with the low incidence of the X-ray beam produce an extended wire shadow which we use to recover the wire's magnetic configuration. In this transmiss…

In half-doped Pr0.50A0.50CoO3 metallic perovskites, the spin-lattice coupling brings about distinct magnetostructural transitions for A=Ca and A=Sr at temperatures close to 100 K. However, the ground magnetic properties of Pr0.50Sr0.50CoO3 (PSCO) strongly differ from Pr0.50Ca0.50CoO3 ones, where a partial Pr3+ to Pr4+ valence shift and Co spin transition makes the system insulating below the transition. This work investigates and describes the relationship between the Imma-to-I4/mcm symmetry change [Padilla-Pantoja et al, Inorg. Chem. 53, 12297 (2014)] and the original magnetic behavior of PSC…
Interfaces separating ferromagnetic (FM) layers from non-ferromagnetic layers offer unique properties due to spin-orbit coupling and symmetry breaking, yielding effects such as exchange bias, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, spin-pumping, spin-transfer torques, conversion between charge and spin currents and vice-versa. These interfacial phenomena play crucial roles for magnetic data storage and transfer applications, which require forming FM nano-structures embedded in non-ferromagnetic matrices. Here, we investigate the possiblity of creating such nano-structures by ion-irradiation. We stu…
The reactive growth of cobalt germanide on Ge(001) was investigated by means of in-situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy photoemission electron microscopy (XAS-PEEM), micro-illumination low-energy electron diffraction ($μ$-LEED), and ex-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). At a Co deposition temperature of 670°C, a rich morphology with different island shapes and dimensions is observed, and a correlation between island morphology and stoichiometry is found. Combining XAS-PEEM and $μ$-LEED, we were able to identify a large part of the islands to consist of CoGe$_2$, with many of them having an unus…
In this work, we simulated the physical vapor deposition (PVD) process of Cu atoms on the amorphous SiO$_2$ substrate. The resulting Cu thin layer exhibit amorphous structure. The Cu liquid quenching from 2000 K to 50 K was also simulated with different cooling rate to form the Cu metallic glass for comparison. The Cu glasses from the two different processes (PVD and quenching) revealed the same radial distribution function but different local structure from the Voronoi tessellation analysis. The PVD glass exhibit higher densities and lower potential energy compared with the melt-quenched coun…
In this work, the single-component Cu metallic glass was fabricated by the physical vapor deposition on the Zr (0001) crystal substrate at 100 K using the classical molecular dynamic simulation. The same deposition process was performed on the Cu (1 0 0) and Ni (1 0 0) crystal substrate for comparison, only the Cu crystal deposited layer with the fcc structure can be obtained. When depositing the Cu atoms on the Zr substrate at 300 K, the crystal structure was formed, which indicates that except the suitable substrate, low temperature is also a key factor for the amorphous structure formation.…
Transport properties and magnetic field induced localization in the misfit cobaltite [Bi$_2$Ba$_{1.3}$K$_{0.6}$Co$_{0.1}$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.97}$ single crystal
Wereport the results of a sequence of magnetisation and magneto-optical studies on laser ablated thin films of ZnCoAlO and ZnCoO that contain a small amount of metallic cobalt. The results are compared to those expected when all the magnetization is due to isolated metallic clusters of cobalt and with an oxide sample that is almost free from metallic inclusions. Using a variety of direct magnetic measurements and also magnetic circular dichroism we find that there is ferromagnetism within both the oxide and the metallic inclusions, and furthermore that these magnetic components are exchange-co…
This Letter reports a generalized theory of the smallest diameter of metallic nanorods from physical vapor deposition. The generalization incorporates the effects of nanorod separation and those of van der Waals interactions on geometrical shadowing. In contrast, the previous theory for idealized geometrical shadowing [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 136102 (2013)] does not include any dependence on nanorod separation and it predicts the diameter to be about to of what the generalized theory does. As verification, numerical solutions and the generalized theory in closed-form agree in terms of effective …
Poly(methyl methacrylate) - Palladium clusters nanocomposite formation by supersonic cluster beam deposition: a method for microstructured metallization of polymer surfaces
We present an x-ray magnetic dichroism (XMCD) and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study to address the nature of emerging magnetic order in metallic Copper as Cobalt is added to the matrix. For this purpose line shape and energy position of XAS and XMCD spectra will be analyzed for a series of Co/Cu alloys as well as a multilayer reference. We observe an increased hybridization between Cu and Co sites as well as increased localization of the Cu d-electrons and an induced magnetic moment in Cu. The emergence of long range magnetic order in non-magnetic materials that are in proximity t…
Three-dimensional metallic microstructures find applications as stents in medicine, as ultrabroadband antennas in communications, in micromechanical parts or as structures of more fundamental interest in photonics like metamaterials. Direct metal printing of such structures using three-dimensional laser lithography is a promising approach, which is not extensively applied yet, as fabrication speed, surface quality, and stability of the resulting structures are limited so far. In order to identify the limiting factors, we investigate the influence of light-particle interactions and varying scan…
In the majority of cases nanostructures prepared by focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) employing an organometallic precursor contain predominantly carbon-based ligand dissociation products. This is unfortunate with regard to using this high-resolution direct-write approach for the preparation of nanostructures for various fields, such as mesoscopic physics, micromagnetism, electronic correlations, spin-dependent transport and numerous applications. Here we present an in-situ cleaning approach to obtain pure Co-FEBID nanostructures. The purification procedure lies in the exposure …
The Pd, and Pt based ABO2 delafossites are a unique class of layered, triangular oxides with 2D electronic structure and a large conductivity that rivals the noble metals. Here, we report successful growth of the metallic delafossite PdCoO2 by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The key challenge is controlling the oxidation of Pd in the MBE environment where phase-segregation is driven by the reduction of PdCoO2 to cobalt oxide and metallic palladium. This is overcome by combining low temperature (300 °C) atomic layer-by-layer MBE growth in the presence of reactive atomic oxygen with a post-growth …
We perform ultrasound velocity measurements on a single crystal of nearly-metallic spinel Co$_{1.21}$V$_{1.79}$O$_4$ which exhibits a ferrimagnetic phase transition at $T_C \sim$ 165 K. The experiments reveal a variety of elastic anomalies in not only the paramagnetic phase above $T_C$ but also the ferrimagnetic phase below $T_C$, which should be driven by the nearly-itinerant character of the orbitally-degenerate V 3$d$ electrons. In the paramagnetic phase above $T_C$, the elastic moduli exhibit elastic-mode-dependent unusual temperature variations, suggesting the existence of a dynamic spin-…
The electronic structure of the transparent semiconductor In2O3 has been studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy upon deposition of metallic indium and also tin on the surface of the semiconductor. By deposition of metallic indium on In2O3 (111) single crystals, we detected the formation of a free-electron like band of effective mass (0.38+-0.05) m0. At low coverages, metallic In shifts the Fermi level of In2O3 to higher energies and a new electronic state forms at the metal/semiconductor interface. This state of two-dimensional character (2D-electron gas) is completely responsibl…
The synthesis of the photochromic YHO films is based on the oxidation of deposited yttrium hydride in ambient conditions. The actual state of the films during the deposition process, which is influenced by the deposition pressure and the oxidation caused by the residual gases, is not completely known. We report on the YHxOy thin films deposited by reactive pulsed-DC magnetron sputtering. Since the visible light transmittance is closely related to the phase and chemical composition of the films, in-situ transmittance measurements during and after deposition are performed. Ex-situ spectroscopic …
Transport and magnetic properties of GdBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} single crystals: A cobalt oxide with square-lattice CoO_2 planes over a wide range of electron and hole doping
We report on the fabrication of all perovskite Mott insulator/band insulator YTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattices by pulsed laser deposition. The combination of in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray reflectivity confirms the high quality of the films grown in a layer-by-layer mode. Electrical transport measurements reveal that a non-SrTiO3 based two dimensional electron gas system has formed at the YTiO3/CaTiO3 interface. These studies offer another route in the pursuit of complex oxide two-dimensional electron gas systems, which allows to obtain greater insig…
