We report studies of the magnetic properties of a staggered stacked triangular lattice Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$ using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, as well as first principles density functional theory calculations. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic order with a propagated vector $\textbf{\emph{k}}=(0.5, 0.5, 0)$ and N{é}el transition temperature of $T_\text{N}\approx20$ K. The dominant interaction derived from the Curie-Weiss fitting to the inverse DC susceptibility is antiferromagnetic. Through modelling the INS spectrum with the linear spin wave theory, the magnetic exchange interactions for the nearest intralayer, nearest interlayer, and next nearest interlayer are determined to be $J_1=0.27(3),J_2=0.27(3),$ and $J_3=-0.05(1)$ meV, respectively, and a small value of easy-axis anisotropy of $D_{zz}=-0.01$ meV is introduced. We derive a magnetic phase diagram that reveals that it is the competition between $J_1, J_2$, and $J_3$ that stabilizes the collinear stripe-type antiferromagnetic order.
B-site ordered A$_2$B'B''O$_6$ double perovskites have a variety of applications as magnetic materials. Here we show that diamagnetic $d^{10}$ and $d^0$ B'' cations have a significant effect on the magnetic interactions in these materials. We present a neutron scattering and theoretical study of the Mn$^{2+}$ double perovskite Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$ with a $4d^{10}$ Te$^{6+}$ cation on the B''-site. It is found to be a Type I antiferromagnet with a dominant nearest-neighbor $J_1$ interaction. In contrast, the $5d^0$ W$^{6+}$ analogue Ba$_2$MnWO$_6$ is a Type II antiferromagnet with a significant next…
We study a two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder in the presence of a staggered magnetic field. We consider two parameter regimes: strong (weak) coupling along the legs and weak (strong) coupling along the rungs. In both cases, the staggered field drives the Haldane spin-liquid phase of the ladder towards a Gaussian quantum criticality. In a generalized spin ladder with a non-Haldane, spontaneously dimerized phase, the staggered magnetic field induces an Ising quantum critical regime. In the vicinity of the critical lines, we derive low-energy effective field theories and use these descrip…
Very recently Fonseca and Pires [Phys. Rev. B 73, 012403(2006)] have studied the soliton--magnon scattering for the isotropic antiferromagnet and calculated ``exact'' phase shifts, which were compared with the ones obtained by the Born approximation. In this Comment we correct both the soliton and magnon solutions and point out the way how to study correctly the scattering problem.
The magnetic behaviors of a spin-1/2 alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain in a staggered transverse magnetic field is studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group method and Jordan-Wigner transformation. Quantum phase transitions of different types are observed in the S=1 Neel and XY-like gapless phases, which result from the competitions between the staggered transverse field and magnetic orders induced by anisotropy and alternating interactions. The results are compared with the mean-field and some exactly resolved results.
The EPR spectra along different crystallographic axes for single crystals of CuGeO3 containing 1% of Fe impurity have been studied in the frequency range 60-360 GHz at temperatures 0.5-30 K. The analysis based on the Oshikawa-Affleck (OA) theory suggests that the temperature dependences of the line width and g-factor are formed as a result of the competition between interchain antiferromagnetic interactions and staggered Zeeman energy. It is found that staggered magnetic moments in CuGeO3:Fe are located predominantly along b axis.
Heavy fermion compounds consisting of two or more inequivalent local moment sites per unit cell have been a promising platform of investigating the interplay between distinct Kondo screenings that is absent in the conventional systems containing only one rare-earth ion per unit cell. We report a remarkable enhancement of the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering tendency in the staggered periodic Anderson model (PAM) with two alternating inequivalent local moments if their hybridization strengths reside in the Kondo singlet and antiferromagnetic insulator regime separately of the phase diagram of ho…
We investigate the behavior of antiferromagnetic integer-spin chains in a staggered magnetic field, by means of the density-matrix renormalization group, carefully addressing the role of finite-size effects within the Haldane phase at small fields. In the case of spin S=2, we determine the dependence of the groundstate energy and magnetization on the external field, in the thermodynamic limit, and show how the peculiar finite-size behavior can be connected with the crossover in the groundstate from a spin liquid to a polarized Néel state.
We develop a boundary field theory approach to electron spin resonance in open $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with an effective staggered field. In terms of the sine Gordon effective field theory with boundaries,we point out the existence of boundary bound states of elementary excitations, and modification of the selection rules at the boundary. We argue that several "unknown modes" found in electron spin resonance experiments on KCuGaF$_6$ [I. Umegaki et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 184401 (2009)] and Cu-PM [S. A. Zvyagin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 027201 (2004)] can be understood as …
Anticipating realization of interacting fermions in an optical lattice with a large gauge field, we consider phase transitions and loop currents in a two-dimensional S=1/2 fermionic-Hubbard model with $π$/2-staggered flux at half filling. We use a variational Monte Carlo method, which is reliable even for strong correlations. As a trial wave function, a coexistent state of antifferomagnetic and staggered-flux orders is studied. In a strongly correlated regime, the ground state becomes an insulating coexistent state with loop currents. By comparing fermions with bosons, we discuss an important …
We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in a staggered magnetic field describing materials such as copper benzoate and copper pyrimidine dinitrate. Using the density-matrix renormalization group for transfer matrices (TMRG) we calculate the magnetization of these materials at finite temperature and arbitrary magnetic field. These results are in excellent agreement with experimental data, allowing for a determination of the inhomogeneity parameter c of copper benzoate (c = 0.043) and copper pyrimidine dinitrate (c= 0.11). The TMRG approach can be applied to rather low temper…
We revisit bulk FeSe through the systematic first-principles electronic structure calculations. We find that there are a series of staggered $n$-mer antiferromagnetic (AFM) states with corresponding energies below that of the collinear AFM state which is the ground state for the parent compounds of most iron-based superconductors. Here the staggered $n$-mer ($n$ any integer $>1$) means that a set of $n$ adjacent spins parallel on a line along $b$-axis with spins in antiparallel between $n$-mers and along $a$-axis. Among them, the lowest energy states are quasi-degenerate staggered dimer and st…
We study the properties of one-dimensional gapped Heisenberg antiferromagnets in the presence of an arbitrary strong staggered magnetic field. For these systems we predict a universal form for the staggered magnetization curve. This function, as well as the effect the staggered field has on the energy gaps in longitudinal and transversal excitation spectra, are determined from the universal form of the effective potential in O(3)-symmetric 1+1--dimensional field theory. Our theoretical findings are in excellent agreement with recent neutron scattering data on R_2 Ba Ni O_5 (R = magnetic rare e…
We explore the behavior of the order parameter and the magnetization of antiferromagnetic solids subjected to mutually parallel staggered and magnetic fields. The effective field theory analysis of the partition function is taken up to the two-loop level, where the magnon-magnon interaction comes into play. These interaction effects, however, are small. A phenomenon that comes rather unexpectedly is that the finite-temperature magnetization increases with temperature when the strengths of the staggered and magnetic field are held constant.
Ground state and low-energy excitations of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet CuSe$_2$O$_5$ were experimentally studied using bulk magnetization, neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation and antiferromagnetic resonance measurements. Finite interchain interactions promote long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_N=17$ K. The derived spin canted structure is characterized by the magnetic propagation vector $\mathbf{k}=(1, 0, 0)$ and the reduced magnetic moment $\bm{m}=[0.13(7), 0.50(1), 0.00(8)]μ_B$. The values of the magnetic anisotropies determined from the field and angular depende…
We study low-energy excitations in antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with a staggered field which splits the spectrum into a longitudinal and a transverse branch. Bound states are found to exist inside the field induced gap in both branches. They originate from the edge effects and are inherent to spin-chain materials. The sine-Gordon scaling $h_s^{2/3}|\log h_s|^{1/6}$ ($h_s$: the staggered field) provides an accurate description for the gap and midgap energies in the transverse branch for $S=1/2$ and the midgap energies in both branches for $S=3/2$ over a wide range of magnetic field; howe…
We present a systematic study of coupled $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains in an effective staggered field. We investigate several effects of the staggered field in the {\em higher} ({\em two or three}) {\em dimensional} spin system analytically. In particular, in the case where the staggered field and the inter-chain interaction compete with each other, we predict, using mean-field theory, a characteristic phase transition. The spin-wave theory predicts that the behavior of the gaps induced by the staggered field is different between the competitive case and the non-competitive case…
We present in this paper a nonlinear sigma-model analysis of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external commensurate staggered magnetic field. After rediscussing briefly and extending previous results for the staggered magnetization curve, the core of the paper is a novel calculation, at the tree level, of the Green functions of the model. We obtain precise results for the elementary excitation spectrum and in particular for the spin gaps in the transverse and longitudinal channels. It is shown that, while the spectral weight in the transverse channel is exhausted by a single m…
We have numerically investigated whether or not a mean-field theory of spin textures generate fictitious flux in the doped two dimensional $t-J$-model. First we consider the properties of uniform systems and then we extend the investigation to include models of striped phases where a fictitious flux is generated in the domain wall providing a possible source for lowering the kinetic energy of the holes. We have compared the energetics of uniform systems with stripes directed along the (10)- and (11)-directions of the lattice, finding that phase-separation generically turns out to be energetica…
We propose an efficient method to identify the degree of frustration in quasi-2D antiferromagnets described by the J_1-J_2 Heisenberg model. The frustration ratio J_2/J_1 is usually obtained from analysis of susceptibility, specific heat and saturation field. We show that the non-monotonic field dependence of the staggered moment caused by the suppression of quantum fluctuations in a field depends strongly on the frustration ratio. This gives a powerful criterion to determine J_2/J_1 using a combination of exact diagonalization (ED) method for finite clusters and spin wave analysis. We apply t…
Inelastic neutron scattering was used to measure the magnetic field dependence of spin excitations in the antiferromagnetic S=1/2 chain CuCl_2 2(dimethylsulfoxide) (CDC) in the presence of uniform and staggered fields. Dispersive bound states emerge from a zero-field two-spinon continuum with different finite energy minima at wave numbers q=pi and q_i approx pi (1-2<S_z>). The ratios of the field dependent excitation energies are in excellent agreement with predictions for breather and soliton solutions to the quantum sine-Gordon model, the proposed low-energy theory for S=1/2 chains in a stag…
We investigate the thermodynamic behavior of antiferromagnetic films in external magnetic fields oriented perpendicular to the staggered magnetization. Within the systematic effective Lagrangian framework we first calculate the two-point function and the dispersion relation for the two types of magnons up to one-loop order. This allows us to split the two-loop free energy density into a piece that originates from noninteracting dressed magnons, and a second piece that corresponds to the genuine magnon-magnon interaction. We then discuss the low-temperature series for various thermodynamic quan…
We study the low-temperature behavior of antiferromagnets in two spatial dimensions that are subjected to a magnetic field oriented perpendicular to the staggered magnetization order parameter. The evaluation of the partition function is carried to two-loop order within the systematic effective Lagrangian technique. Low-temperature series that are valid in weak magnetic and staggered fields are derived for the pressure, staggered magnetization, and magnetization. Remarkably, at $T$=0, the staggered magnetization is enhanced by the magnetic field, implying that the phenomenon of magnetic cataly…
Using a model-independent low-energy effective field theory, we calculate the free energy of three-dimensional antiferromagnets in a combination of mutually perpendicular external magnetic and staggered fields at the next-to-next-to-leading, two-loop order. Renormalization is carried out analytically, and the renormalization group invariance of the result is checked explicitly. The free energy is thus expressed solely in terms of temperature, the external fields, and a set of low-energy coupling constants, to be determined by experiment or by matching to the microscopic model of a given concre…
We employ an improved estimator to calculate the constraint effective potential of the staggered magnetization in the spin $\tfrac{1}{2}$ quantum Heisenberg model using a loop-cluster algorithm. The first and second moment of the probability distribution of the staggered magnetization are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the systematic low-energy magnon effective field theory. We also compare the Monte Carlo data with the universal shape of the constraint effective potential of the staggered magnetization and study its approach to the convex effective potential in the infinite vo…
We study the low-energy excitations of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain and $N$-leg ($N$=2, 3, 4) ladders in a staggered magnetic field $h_s$. We show that $h_s$ induces gap and midgap states in all the cases and examine their field scaling behavior. A modified boundary scheme is devised to extract accurate bulk excitation behavior. The gap values converge rapidly as $N$ increases, leading to a field scaling exponent $γ=1/2$ for both the longitudinal and transverse gaps of the square lattice ($N \to \infty$). The midgap states induced by the boundary edge effects share the bulk …
We investigated magnetic and thermodynamic properties of $S$ = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuMoO$_4$(OH) through single crystalline magnetization and heat capacity measurements. At zero field, it behaves as a uniform $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with $J$ = 238 K, and exhibits a canted antiferromagnetism below $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 1.52 K. In addition, a magnetic field $H$ induces the anisotropy in magnetization and opens a gap in the spin excitation spectrum. These properties are understood in terms of an effective staggered field induced by staggered g-tensors and Dzyaloshin…
The thermal properties of antiferromagnetic films -- in particular, the square-lattice antiferromagnet -- subjected to an external magnetic field pointing into the direction of the staggered magnetization are explored. The effective field theory analysis of the free energy density is carried out to two-loop order. While the emphasis is on finite temperature, we also discuss the behavior of the magnetization and staggered magnetization at zero temperature. Our results imply that the staggered magnetization increases in presence of the magnetic field -- reminiscent of magnetic catalysis. Most re…
The Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain is considered in the massive antiferromagnetic regime in the presence of a staggered longitudinal magnetic field. The Hamiltonian of the model is characterised by the anisotropy parameter $Δ<-1$, and by the magnetic field strength h. At zero magnetic field, the model is exactly solvable. In the thermodynamic limit, it has two degenerate vacua and the kinks (which are also called spinons) interpolating between these vacua, as elementary excitations. Application of the staggered magnetic field breaks integrability of the model and induces the long-range attracti…
Recent experiments on the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chain compound, Cu benzoate, discovered an unexpected gap scaling as approximately the 2/3 power of an applied magnetic field. A theory of this gap, based on an effective staggered field, orthogonal to the applied uniform field, resulting from a staggered gyromagnetic tensor and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, leading to a sine-Gordon quantum field theory, has been developed. Here we discuss many aspects of this subject in considerable detail, including a review of the S=1/2 chain in a uniform field, a spin-wave theory analysis of the unif…
Long-range magnetic ordering in R_2 Ba Ni O_5 (R=magnetic rare earth) quasi-1-dimensional mixed-spin antiferromagnets is described by a simple mean-field model that is based on the intrinsic staggered magnetization function of isolated Haldane spin chains for the Ni-subsystem, and single-ion magnetization functions for the rare earth ions. The model is applied to new experimental results obtained in powder diffraction experiments on Nd_2 Ba Ni O_5 and Nd Y Ba Ni O_5, and to previously published diffraction data for Er_2 Ba Ni O_5. From this analysis we extract the bare staggered magnetization …
Inspired by the recently theoretical development relevant to the experimental data of TlCuCl$_3$, particularly those associated with the universal scaling between the Néel temperature $T_N$ and the staggered magnetization density $M_s$, we carry a detailed investigation of 3-dimensional (3D) dimerized quantum antiferromagnets using the first principles quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The motivation behind our study is to better understand the microscopic effects on these scaling relations of $T_N$ and $M_s$, hence to shed some light on some of the observed inconsistency between the theoretic…
We investigate the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a rectangular lattice, using the Gutzwiller projected variational wave function known as the staggered flux state. Using Monte Carlo techniques, the variational parameters and static spin-structure factor for different coupling anisotropies $γ=J_y/J_x$ are calculated. We observe a gradual evolution of the ground state energy towards a value which is very close to the 1D estimate provided by the Bethe ansatz and a good agreement between the finite size scaling of the energies. The spin-spin correlation functions exhibit a power-law decay with vary…
We study quantum phase transitions in Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with a staggered power-law decaying long-range interactions. Employing the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm and the fidelity susceptibility as the criticality measure, we establish more accurate values of quantum critical points than the results obtained from the spin-wave approximation, quantum Monte Carlo and DMRG in literatures. The deviation is especially evident for strong long-range interactions. We extend isotropic long-range interactions to the anisotropic cases and find that kaleidoscope of …
Considering interacting (antiferromagnetically correlated) electrons, we derive a generalized Harper's equation for the square lattice of infinite size. We obtain an analytic expression for the density of states from the newly derived Harper's equation. We present a predicted phase diagram of staggered magnetization in the plane of temperature vs doping rate and discover a possibility of reentrant behavior of the staggered magnetization even in the presence of applied magnetic field. It is shown that below a critical electron correlation strength (Coulomb repulsion) the staggered magnetization…
We study spin-wave interactions in quantum antiferromagnets by expressing the usual magnon annihilation and creation operators in terms of Hermitian field operators representing transverse staggered and ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. In this parameterization, which was anticipated by Anderson in 1952, the two-body interaction vertex between staggered spin fluctuations vanishes at long wavelengths. We derive a new effective action for the staggered fluctuations only by tracing out the ferromagnetic fluctuations. To one loop order, the renormalization group flow agrees with the nonlinear-$σ$-m…
At low temperature the holes doped into the NiO(2) planes of La(2)NiO(4.133) by the excess oxygen collect in diagonal stripes that separate narrow antiferromagnetic domains. The magnetic order drops abruptly to zero at T_m = 110.5 K, but charge order remains with a period of 3a/2. We show that application of a magnetic field in the regime T > T_m induces staggered magnetic order of period 3a due to the net magnetic moment of the high-temperature bond-centered stripes, together with the odd number of Ni spins across an antiferromagnetic domain.
In this article, I study magnetic response of electron wavefunctions in a commensurate collinear antiferromagnet. I show that, at a special set of momenta, hidden anti-unitary symmetry protects Kramers degeneracy of Bloch eigenstates against a magnetic field, pointing transversely to staggered magnetization. Hence a substantial momentum dependence of the transverse g-factor in the Zeeman term, turning the latter into a spin-orbit coupling, that may be present in materials from chromium to borocarbides, cuprates, pnictides, as well as organic and heavy fermion conductors.
Using systematic effective field theory, we explore the properties of antiferromagnetic films subjected to magnetic and staggered fields that are either mutually aligned or mutually orthogonal. We provide low-temperature series for the entropy density in either case up to two-loop order. Invoking staggered, uniform and sublattice magnetizations of the bipartite antiferromagnet, we investigate the subtle order-disorder phenomena in the spin arrangement, induced by temperature, magnetic and staggered fields -- some of which are quite counterintuitive. In the figures we focus on the spin-$\frac{1…
The magnitude of the staggered field is calculated from the EPR data for CuGeO3 doped with Co and Fe magnetic impurities. It is found that this parameter demonstrate an anomalous temperature and magnetic field dependence probably due to (i) the specific mechanism of the staggered field generation in doped CuGeO3 and (ii) a competition between antiferromagnetic interchain exchange and staggered Zeeman energy.
We simulate the three-dimensional quantum Heisenberg model with a spatially anisotropic ladder pattern using the first principles Monte Carlo method. Our motivation is to investigate quantitatively the newly established universal relation $T_N/\sqrt{c^3}$ $\propto$ ${\cal M}_s$ near the quantum critical point (QCP) associated with dimerization. Here $T_N$, $c$, and ${\cal M}_s$ are the Néel temperature, the spinwave velocity, and the staggered magnetization density, respectively. For all the physical quantities considered here, such as $T_N$ and ${\cal M}_s$, our Monte Carlo results agree nice…
Manipulating spin currents in magnetic insulators is a key technology in spintronics. We theoretically study a simple inversion-asymmetric model of quantum antiferromagnets, where both the exchange interaction and the magnetic field are staggered. We calculate spin currents generated by external electric and magnetic fields by using a quantum master equation. We show that an ac electric field with amplitude $E_0$ leads, through exchange-interaction modulation, to the dc and second-harmonic spin currents proportional to $E_0^2$. We also show that dc and ac staggered magnetic fields $B_0$ genera…
In a tight binding model of charged spin-1/2 electrons on a square lattice, a fully polarized ferromagnetic spin configuration generates an apparent U(1) flux given by $2π$ times the skyrmion charge density of the ferromagnetic order parameter. We show here that for an antiferromagnet, there are two ``fictitious'' magnetic fields, one staggered and one unstaggered. The staggered topological flux per unit cell can be varied between $-π\leΦ\leπ$ with a negligible change in the value of the effective nearest neighbor coupling constant whereas the magnitude of the unstaggered flux is strongly coup…
The Néel temperature, staggered magnetization density, as well as the spinwave velocity of a three-dimensional (3D) quantum Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic disorder (randomness) are calculated using first principles non-perturbative quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we examine the validity of universal scaling relations that are related to these three studied physical quantities. These relations are relevant to experimental data and are firmly established for clean (regular) 3D dimerized spin-1/2 Heisenberg models. Remarkably, our numerical results show that the considere…
We investigate the scaling properties of the excitation energies and transition amplitudes of the one-dimensional spin-$1\over 2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model exposed to an external perturbation. Two types of perturbations are discussed in detail: a staggered field and a dimerized field.
Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements in magnetic fields were performed on an $S=1/2$ one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuGaF$_6$. Exchange interaction was evaluated as $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq 100$ K. However, no magnetic ordering was observed down to 0.46 K. It was found that an applied magnetic field induces a staggered magnetic susceptibility obeying the Curie law and an excitation gap, both of which should be attributed to the antisymmetric interaction of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya type and/or the staggered $g$-tensor. With increasing magnetic field $H$, the gap increases almost i…
We describe the uniform and staggered magnetization distributions around a vacancy in a quantum critical two-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet. The distributions are delocalized across the entire sample with a universal functional form arising from an uncompensated Berry phase. The numerical results, obtained using quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Heisenberg model on bilayer lattices with up to approximately 10^5 spins, are in good agreement with the proposed scaling structure. We determine the exponent eta'=0.40 +/- 0.02, which governs both the staggered and uniform magnetic structure a…
The continuous imaginary-time quantum Monte Carlo method with the worm update algorithm is applied to explore the ground state properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling $J>0$ and ferromagnetic (F) coupling $J^{\prime}<0$ along zigzag and armchair directions, respectively, on honeycomb lattice. It is found that by enhancing the F coupling $J^{\prime}$ between zigzag AF chains, the system is smoothly crossover from one-dimensional zigzag spin chains to a two-dimensional magnetic ordered state. In absence of an external field, the system is in a stripe order…
Using the low-energy effective field theory for magnons and holes -- the condensed matter analog of baryon chiral perturbation theory for pions and nucleons in QCD -- we study different phases of doped antiferromagnets. We systematically investigate configurations of the staggered magnetization that provide a constant background field for doped holes. The most general configuration of this type is either constant itself or it represents a spiral in the staggered magnetization. Depending on the values of the low-energy parameters, a homogeneous phase, a spiral phase, or an inhomogeneous phase i…
Using the experimental data given in Phys. Rev. B70, 220507 (2004), we show that -- unlike the effective coupling discussed in this paper -- the net average antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling in doped lanthanum cuprates depends only weakly on the doping or on the temperature. We argue that the effective coupling is proportional to the square of the staggered magnetization, and does not supply new information about the origin of the suppression of the magnetic order in doped samples. Our analysis is based on a modified version of the equation describing the spin-flip transition, which takes …
Counterintuitive order-disorder phenomena emerging in antiferromagnetically coupled spin systems have been reported in various studies. Here we perform a systematic effective field theory analysis of two-dimensional bipartite quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets subjected to either mutually aligned -- or mutually orthogonal -- magnetic and staggered fields. Remarkably, in the aligned configuration, the finite-temperature uniform magnetization $M_T$ grows as temperature rises. Even more intriguing, in the orthogonal configuration, $M_T$ first drops, goes through a minimum, and then increases as …
The present work addresses YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ at doping below x=6% where the compound is a collinear antiferromagnet. In this region YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ is a normal conductor with a finite resistivity at zero temperature. The value of the staggered magnetization at zero temperature is 0.6μ_B, the maximum value allowed by spin quantum fluctuations. The staggered magnetization is almost independent of doping. On the other hand, the Neel temperature decays very quickly from T_N=420K at x=0 to practically zero at x = 0.06. The present paper explains these remarkable properties and demon…
We analyze the thermodynamic properties of the spin-S two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor couplings in the Neel phase (J_2/J_1<0.4) employing the quantum hierarchical reference theory (QHRT), a non-perturbative implementation of the renormalization group method to quantum systems. We investigate the staggered susceptibility, the structure factors and the correlation length at finite temperature and for different values of the frustration ratio. From the finite temperature results, we also extrapolate ground state propert…
We study a frustrated spin-$S$ staggered-dimer Heisenberg model on square lattice by using the bond-operator representation for quantum spins, and investigate the emergence of classical magnetic order from the quantum mechanical (staggered-dimer singlet) ground state for increasing $S$. Using triplon analysis, we find the critical couplings for this quantum phase transition to scale as $1/S(S+1)$. We extend the triplon analysis to include the effect of quintet dimer-states, which proves to be essential for establishing the classical order (Néel or collinear in the present study) for large $S$,…
A path-integral for the t-J model in two dimensions is constructed based on Dirac quantization, with an action found originally by Wiegmann (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 60}, 821 (1988); Nucl. Phys. B323, 311 (1989)). Concentrating on the low doping limit, we assume short range antiferromagnetic order of the spin degrees of freedom. Going over to a local spin quantization axis of the dopant fermions, that follows the spin degree of freedom, staggered CP$^1$ fields result and the constraint against double occupancy can be resolved. The staggered CP$^1$ fields are split into slow and fast modes, such t…
Based on the linear response of the fermion propagator with respect to an external field, we first derive a model-independent expression for the staggered spin susceptibility in which the influence of the full pseudoscalar vertex function is included. This expression for the staggered spin susceptibility is quite different from that given in the previous literature. The numerical values of the staggered spin susceptibility are calculated within the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger approach. Our numerical result shows that the nonperturbative dressing effects on the fermion propagator is very i…
Doping the high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.7 with 1.5 % of non-magnetic Zn impurities in CuO2 planes is shown to produce a considerable broadening of 63Cu NMR spectra, as well as an increase of low-energy magnetic fluctuations detected in 63Cu spin-lattice relaxation measurements. A model-independent analysis demonstrates that these effects are due to the development of staggered magnetic moments on many Cu sites around each Zn and that the Zn-induced moment in the bulk susceptibility might be explained by this staggered magnetization. Several implications of these enhanced antiferromagnetic …
