The present work addresses YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ at doping below x=6% where the compound is a collinear antiferromagnet. In this region YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ is a normal conductor with a finite resistivity at zero temperature. The value of the staggered magnetization at zero temperature is 0.6μ_B, the maximum value allowed by spin quantum fluctuations. The staggered magnetization is almost independent of doping. On the other hand, the Neel temperature decays very quickly from T_N=420K at x=0 to practically zero at x = 0.06. The present paper explains these remarkable properties and demonstrates that the properties result from the physics of a lightly doped Mott insulator with small hole pockets. Nuclear quadrupole resonance data are also discussed. The data shed light on mechanisms of stability of the antiferromagnetic order at x < 6%.
At doping below 6% the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O{6+y} is a collinear antiferromagnet. Independent of doping the value of the staggered magnetization at zero temperature is about 0.6μ_B. This is the maximum value of the magnetization allowed by quantum fluctuations of localized spins. In this low doping regime the compound is a normal conductor with a finite resistivity at zero temperature. These experimental observations create a unique opportunity for theory to perform a controlled calculation of the electron spectral function. In the present work we perform this calculation within the framewo…
In-plane transport properties of nonsuperconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (y = 6.35) are measured using high-quality untwinned single crystals. We find that both the a- and b-axis resistivities show log(1/T) divergence down to 80 mK, and accordingly the thermal conductivity data indicate that the nodal quasiparticles are progressively localized with lowering temperature. Hence, both the charge and heat transport data do not support the existence of a "thermal metal" in nonsuperconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}, as opposed to a recent report by Sutherland {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 94}, 14700…
A theory for the Hubbard model appropriate in the limit of large U/t, small doping away from half-filling and short-ranged antiferromagnetic spin correlations is presented. Despite the absence of any broken symmetry the Fermi surface takes the form of elliptical hole pockets centered near (pi/2,pi/2) with a volume proportional to the hole concentration. Short range antiferromagnetic correlations render the nearest neighbor hopping almost ineffective so that only second or third nearest neighbor hopping contributes appreciably to the dispersion relation.
Effect of the coupling to mobile carriers on the 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic state is investigated in a ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model on a frustrated triangular lattice. Using a variational calculation for various spin orderings up to a four-site unit cell, we identify the ground-state phase diagram with focusing on the lightly-doped region. We find that an electron doping from the band bottom immediately destabilizes a 120$^\circ$ coplanar antiferromagnetic order and induces a noncoplanar three-sublattice ordering accompanied by an intervening phase separation. This noncoplanar phase ha…
Hole induced changes in the antiferromagnetic structure of a lightly Ca doped Gd:Y_{1-x}Ca_xBa_2Cu_3O_6 copper oxide single crystal with x~0.008 is investigated by Gd3+ electron spin resonance. Holes do not localize to Ca2+ ions above 2.5 K since the charge distribution and spin susceptibility next to the Ca2+ are independent of temperature. Both hole doped and pristine crystals are magnetically twinned with an external magnetic field dependent antiferromagnetic domain structure. Unlike the undoped crystal, where the easy magnetic axis is along [100] at all temperatures, the easy direction in …
In this paper we report low-temperature magnetic properties of the rare-earth perovskite material YbAlO$_3$. Results of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiment, magnetization measurements along with the crystalline electrical field (CEF) calculations suggest that the ground state of Yb moments is a strongly anisotropic Kramers doublet, and the moments are confined in the $ab$-plane, pointing at an angle of $φ= \pm 23.5^{\circ}$ to the $a$-axis. With temperature decreasing below $T_{\rm N}=0.88$ K, Yb moments order into the coplanar, but non-collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structu…
A number of rare-earth monopnictides have topologically non-trivial band structures together with magnetism and strong electronic correlations. In order to examine whether the antiferromagnetic (AFM) semimetal YbAs ($T\rm_N$ = 0.5 K) exhibits such a scenario, we have grown high-quality single crystals using a flux method, and characterized the magnetic properties and electronic structure using specific heat, magnetotransport and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both ARPES and DFT calculations find no evi…
We investigate magnetic properties of lightly doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulators in the presence of non-magnetic impurities. Within the framework of the t-J model we calculate the doping dependence of the antiferromagnetic order parameter using the self-consistent diagrammatic techniques. We show that in the presence of non-magnetic impurities the antiferromagnetic order is more robust against hole doping in comparison with the impurity-free host, implying that magnetic order can re-appear upon Zn doping into lightly hole-doped cuprates. We argue that this is primarily due to the loss of …
Commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering has been observed in the superconducting high-$Tc$ cuprate ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.5}}$ (${\rm T_{c}}$=55 K) by polarized and unpolarized elastic neutron scattering. The magnetic peak intensity exhibits a marked enhancement at $T_{c}$. Zero-field $μ$SR experiments demonstrate that the staggered magnetization is not truly static but fluctuates on a nanosecond time scale. These results point towards an unusual spin density wave state coexisting with superconductivity.
We study isotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains coupled by antiferromagnetic Ising interaction as an effective spin model for the ytterbium aluminum perovskite YbAlO$_3$. Using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method we calculate the magnetization curve, local spin, central charge, and dynamical spin structure factors in the presence of magnetic field. From the fitting of the experimental magnetization curve, the effective intrachain and interchain couplings are estimated as $J=2.3$K and $J_{\rm ic}=0.8$K, respectively. We can quantitatively explain the experimental obser…
In a recent Letter Ando et al (cond-mat/9905071) discovered an anomalous magnetoresistance(MR) in hole doped antiferromagnetic YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, which they attributed to charged stripes, i.e., to segregation of holes into lines. In this Comment we show that the experiments, albeit being interesting, do not prove the existence of stripes. In our view the anomalous behavior is due to an (a,b) plane anisotropy of the resistivity in the bulk and to a magnetic field dependent antiferromagnetic (AF) domain structure. It is unlikely that domain walls are charged stripes.
The in-plane normal-state resistivity of Zn-doped YBa2Cu3O7-d single crystals is measured down to low temperatures by suppressing superconductivity with magnetic fields up to 18 T. Substitution of Cu with Zn in the CuO2 planes is found to induce carrier localization at low temperatures in "clean" samples with kF l > 5, where the mean free path l is larger than the electron wave length and thus localization is not normally expected. The destruction of the local antiferromagnetic correlation among Cu spins by Zn is discussed to be the possible origin of this unusual charge localization.
Doping the high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.7 with 1.5 % of non-magnetic Zn impurities in CuO2 planes is shown to produce a considerable broadening of 63Cu NMR spectra, as well as an increase of low-energy magnetic fluctuations detected in 63Cu spin-lattice relaxation measurements. A model-independent analysis demonstrates that these effects are due to the development of staggered magnetic moments on many Cu sites around each Zn and that the Zn-induced moment in the bulk susceptibility might be explained by this staggered magnetization. Several implications of these enhanced antiferromagnetic …
In-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistivities (MR) of antiferromagnetic YBa_2Cu_3O_6.25 single crystals were measured in magnetic fields H applied along the (ab) plane. In-plane MR is a superposition of two components: The first component is strongly in-plane anisotropic, changing sign from negative when H is parallel to the electrical current I to positive when H is perpendicular to I. The second component is positive, quadratic in H, and isotropic in the (ab)-plane. The out-of-plane MR displays a fourfold symmetry upon in-plane rotation of the magnetic field, with maxima along the easy axes…
Light hole doping of lanthanum cuprate strongly suppresses the onset of antiferromagnetic (AF) order. Surprisingly, it simultaneously suppresses the extrapolated zero temperature sub-lattice magnetization. 139La NQR results in lightly Li-doped lanthanum cuprate have demonstrated that these effects are independent of the details of the mobility of the added holes. We propose a model in which doped holes phase separate into charged domain walls that surround ``anti-phase'' domains. These domains are mobile down to ~30 K where they either become pinned to the lattice or evaporate as their constit…
We study long wavelength magnetic excitations in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x < 0.03) detwinned crystals. The lowest energy magnetic anisotropy induced gap can be understood in terms of the antisymmetric spin interaction inside the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. The second magnetic resonace, analyzed in terms of in-plane spin anisotropy, shows unconventional behavior within the AF state and led to the discovery of collective spin excitations pertaining to a field induced magnetically ordered state. This state persists in a 9 T field to more than 100 K above the Néel temperature in x =…
We have used high-resolution neutron Larmor diffraction and capacitative dilatometry to investigate spontaneous and forced magnetostriction in undoped, antiferromagnetic YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.0}$, the parent compound of a prominent family of high-temperature superconductors. Upon cooling below the Néel temperature, $T_N = 420$~K, Larmor diffraction reveals the formation of magneto-structural domains of characteristic size $\sim 240$~nm. In the antiferromagnetic state, dilatometry reveals a minute ($4 \times 10^{-6}$) orthorhombic distortion of the crystal lattice in external magnetic fields. We a…
Using a recently developed variational quantum Monte Carlo method, magnetic properties of high-$T_{\rm C}$ superconductors are studied at zero temperature ($T$), by numerical simulations on the 2D t-J model. Our focus here is to explore the difference in the properties of $p$-type and $n$-type cuprates as a function of the carrier concentrations close to half filling. As observed experimentally, it is found that the antiferromagnetically ordered phase persists even for a small, yet finite amount of carrier doping, and that this phase is more robust in the electron doped case.
Specific d-wave angular dependence of the in-plane magnetoresistence in antiferromagnetic tetragonal YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x} (x~0.3) on orientation of the external magnetic field in (a,b) plane is assigned to the effective hole transport through low lying excited purely oxygen doublet O2pe_u state, not the ground b_{1g}(d_{x^2-y^2}) state. External magnetic field determines the orientation of the strong exchange field for the spin-triplet b_{1g}e_u:{}^{3}E_u state of the hole CuO_4 center and due to the spin-orbital coupling results in either orbital polarization of the E_u doublet giving rise to…
The structural, magnetic and transport properties of the layered RBaCo$_2$O$_{5.5}$ cobaltites are sensitive to the oxygen stoichiometry. In this present study, we report the presence of a low-temperature magnetic glassy state in electron-doped polycrystalline YBaCo$_2$O$_{5.5}$ cobaltite. The ac magnetization studies show the absence of conventional spin glass features, while the various dc magnetization studies demonstrate the presence of non-equilibrium magnetic glassy state at low temperature. The magnetic glassy state of this sample results from the kinetic arrest of the first order ferro…
We propose a low energy effective theory of lightly doped two-leg t-J ladders with the help of slave fermion technique. The continuum limit of this model consists of two kinds of Dirac fermions which are coupled to the O(3) non-linear sigma model in terms of the gauge coupling with opposite sign of "charges". In addition to the gauge interaction, there is another kind of attractive force between these Dirac fermions, which arises from the short-ranged antiferromagnetic order. We show that the latter is essential to determine the low energy properties of lightly doped two-leg t-J ladders. The e…
Detailed behavior of the magnetoresistance (MR) is studied in lightly doped antiferromagnetic La_{1.99}Sr_{0.01}CuO_{4}, where, thanks to the weak ferromagnetic moment due to spin canting, the antiferromagnetic (AF) domain structure can be manipulated by the magnetic field. The MR behavior demonstrates that CuO_2 planes indeed contain anti-phase AF domain boundaries in which charges are confined, forming anti-phase stripes. The data suggest that a high magnetic field turns the anti-phase stripes into in-phase stripes, and the latter appear to give better conduction than the former, which chall…
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on lightly-doped La$_{1.96}$Sr$_{0.04}$CuO$_{4}$, which shows diagonal incommensurate spin correlations at low temperatures. We previously reported that this crystal, with a single orthorhombic domain, exhibits the "hourglass" dispersion at low energies [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 197001 (2008)]. In this paper, we investigate in detail the energy evolution of the magnetic excitations up to 65 meV. It is found that the anisotropic excitations at low energies, dispersing only along the spin modulation direction, crossover to an isotropic, c…
We report novel features in the in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) of heavily underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}, which unveil a developed ``charged stripe'' structure in this system. One of the striking features is an anisotropy of the MR with a "d-wave" symmetry upon rotating the magnetic field H within the ab plane, which is caused by the rotation of the stripes with the external field. With decreasing temperature, a hysteresis shows up below ~20 K in the MR curve as a function of H and finally below 10 K the magnetic-field application produces a persistent change in the resistivity. This "memory eff…
We report on a contrasting behavior of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistance (MR) in heavily underdoped antiferromagnetic (AF) YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} (x<0.37). The out-of-plane MR (I//c) is positive over most of the temperature range and shows a sharp increase, by about two orders of magnitude, upon cooling through the Neel temperature T_N. A contribution associated with the AF correlations is found to dominate the out-of-plane MR behavior for H//c from far above T_N, pointing to the key role of spin fluctuations in the out-of-plane transport. In contrast, the transverse in-plane MR (I//a(…
A study of the in-plane resistance noise on a high quality single crystal of La_{1.97}Sr_{0.03}CuO_{4} deep inside the spin-glass phase reveals the onset of non-Gaussianity and the insensitivity of the noise to the in-plane magnetic field. The results indicate that the charge dynamics becomes increasingly slow and correlated as temperature T -> 0. The analysis of the higher order noise statistics provides evidence for the existence of a collective ground state of charge clusters, which seem to coexist with charge-poor antiferromagnetic domains that are frozen at such low T.
We study the destruction of the antiferromagnetic order in the high-Tc superconductors La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) and YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x) in the framework of the CP1-nonlinear sigma model formulation of the 2D quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The dopants are introduced as independent fermions with appropriate dispersion relations determined by the shape of the Fermi surface. The energy of skyrmion topological defects, which are shown to be introduced by doping, is used as an order parameter for antiferromagnetic order. We obtain analytic expressions for this as a function of doping which allow us to …
We present inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a single-domain crystal of lightly-doped La1.96Sr0.04CuO4. We find that the magnetic excitation spectrum in this insulating phase with a diagonal incommensurate spin modulation is remarkably similar to that in the superconducting regime, where the spin modulation is bond parallel. In particular, we find that the dispersion slope at low energy is essentially independent of doping and temperature over a significant range. The energy at which the excitations cross the commensurate antiferromagnetic wave vector increases roughly linearly with …
Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7, in which 4d-Ru is substituted by the more localized 3d-Mn, is studied by x-ray dichroism and spin-resolved density functional theory. We find that Mn impurities do not exhibit the same 4+ valence of Ru, but act as 3+ acceptors; the extra eg electron occupies the in-plane 3dx2-y2 orbital instead of the expected out-of-plane 3d3z2-r2. We propose that the 3d-4d interplay, via the ligand oxygen orbitals, is responsible for this crystal-field level inversion and the material's transition to an antiferromagnetic, possibly orbitally-ordered, low-temperature state.
The effects of nonmagnetic Zn and magnetic Ni substitution for Cu site on magnetism are studied by measurements of uniform magnetic susceptibility for lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCu_{1-z}M_zO_4 (M=Zn or Ni) polycrystalline samples. For the parent x=0, Zn doping suppresses the Néel temperature T_N whereas Ni doping hardly changes T_N up to z=0.3. For the lightly doped samples with T_N~0, the Ni doping recovers T_N. For the superconducting samples, the Ni doping induces the superconductivity-to-antiferromagnetic transition (or crossover). All the heavily Ni doped samples indicate a spin glass beha…
We propose a phenomenological spin fluctuation theory for antiferromagnetic quantum tricritical point (QTCP), where the first-order phase transition changes into the continuous one at zero temperature. Under magnetic fields, ferromagnetic quantum critical fluctuations develop around the antiferromagnetic QTCP in addition to antiferromagnetic ones, which is in sharp contrast with the conventional antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. For itinerant electron systems,} we show that the temperature dependence of critical magnetic fluctuations around the QTCP are given as chiQ \propto T^{-3/2} (…
We show that lightly doped holes will be self-trapped in an antiferromagnetic spin background at low-temperatures, resulting in a spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. The underlying Mott physics is responsible for such novel self-localization of charge carriers. Interesting transport and dielectric properties are found as the consequences, including large doping-dependent thermopower and dielectric constant, low-temperature variable-range-hopping resistivity, as well as high-temperature strange-metal-like resistivity, which are consistent with experimental measurements in the high-T$_c…
^{139}La nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements in lightly doped La_2Cu_{1-x}Li_xO_4 have been performed to reveal the dependence of the magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic CuO_2 planes on the character of the doped holes and their interactions with the dopant. A detailed study shows that the magnetic properties are remarkably insensitive to the character of the dopant impurity. This indicates that the added holes form previously unrecognized collective structures.
Neutron diffraction measurements are presented measuring the responses of both magnetic and structural order parameters of parent and lightly Co-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 under the application of uniaxial pressure. We find that the uniaxial pressure induces a thermal shift in the onset of antiferromagnetic order that grows as a percentage of T_N as Co-doping is increased and the superconducting phase is approached. Additionally, as uniaxial pressure is increased within parent and lightly-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 on the first order side of the tricritical point, we observe a decoupling betwe…
Behavior of ρ_{ab}(T) and R_{H}(T) is presented for LSCO and YBCO single crystals in the lightly hole-doped antiferromagnetic region, with an emphasis on the R_{H}(T) data. In both systems, R_{H} is virtually constant at moderate temperatures and tends to increase at low temperatures. Since essentially the same behavior of ρ_{ab}(T) and R_{H}(T) is observed in both LSCO and YBCO, we discuss that the in-plane charge transport properties are universal among the cuprates in the lightly-doped regime and that the R_{H}(T) data we obtained represent the genuine behavior of the Hall effect in this re…
We report spatially resolved nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on a high temperature superconductor that indicate the presence of correlated antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the vortex core. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, $1/^{17}T_1$, of planar $^{17}O$, in near-optimally doped YB$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO), was measured. Outside of the core, $(^{17}T_1T)^{-1}$ is independent of temperature consistent with theoretical predictions for a {\it d}-wave superconductor. In the vortex core $(^{17}T_1T)^{-1}$ increases with decreasing temperature following an antiferromagnetic Curie-…
Two-channel physics in a lightly doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator revealed by two-hole spectroscopy

We present a study of the magnetic susceptibility in carefully detwinned La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 single crystals in the lightly-doped region (x=0-0.03), which demonstrates a remarkable in-plane anisotropy of the spin system. This anisotropy is found to persist after the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order is destroyed by hole doping, suggesting that doped holes break the AF order into domains in which the spin alignment is kept essentially intact. It turns out that the freezing of the spins taking place at low temperatures is also notably anisotropic, implying that the "spin-glass" feature is …
LaTiO$_{3+δ/2}$, NdTiO$_{3+δ/2}$, and Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3+δ/2}$ thin films have been epitaxially grown on (100)SrTiO$_{3}$ and (100)LaAlO$_{3}$ single crystal substrates by using the pulsed laser deposition technique. The oxygen pressure during deposition has been carefully controlled to ensure that the films are lightly doped in the metal side near the metal-Mott-insulator boundary. A steep drop of the effective carrier number at low temperatures has been observed in some of the films, which may correspond to a gradually opening of the Spin Density Wave (SDW) gap due to the antiferromag…
The intermediate-valent polymorphs $α$- and $β$-YbAlB$_4$ exhibit quantum criticality and other novel properties not usually associated with intermediate valence. Iron doping induces quantum criticality in $α$-YbAlB$_4$ and magnetic order in both compounds. We report results of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) experiments in the intermediate-valent alloys $α$-YbAl$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$B$_4$, $x = 0.014$ and 0.25. For $x = 0.014$ we find no evidence for magnetic order down to 25 mK\@. The dynamic muon spin relaxation rate $λ_d$ exhibits a power-law temperature dependence $λ_d \propto T^{-a}$, $a = 0.40(4)$…
Trial wavefunctions, constructed explicitly from the unique 2-dimensional Mott insulating state with antiferromagnetic order, are proposed to describe the low-energy states of a Mott insulator slightly doped with holes or electrons. With the state behaving like charged quasi-particles with well-defined momenta, a rigid band is observed. These states have much less pairing correlations than previously studied ones. Small Fermi patches obtained are consistent with recent experiments on high Tc cuprates doped lightly with holes or electrons. States showing the incoherent and spin-bag behaviors ar…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to demonstrate that at low temperatures, the low frequency magnetic fluctuations in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6} ($T_c=62.7$ K) are incommensurate, being found at positions displaced by $\pmδ$ ($0.057\pm 0.006$ r.l.u.) along the $[π,π]$ direction from the wave vector $(π,π)$ associated with the antiferromagnetic order of the parent insulator, YBa_2Cu_3O_{6}. The dynamical susceptibility $χ''(q,ω)$ at the incommensurate positions increases on cooling below $T_c$, accompanied by a suppression of magnetic fluctuations at the commensurate points.
A central question in the high temperature cuprate superconductors is the fate of the parent Mott insulator upon charge doping. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the local electronic structure of lightly doped cuprate in the antiferromagnetic insulating regime. We show that the doped charge induces a spectral weight transfer from the high energy Hubbard bands to the low energy in-gap states. With increasing doping, a V-shaped density of state suppression occurs at the Fermi level, which is accompanied by the emergence of checkerboard charge order. The new STM perspective…
We report $^{75}$As NMR measurements in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ doped with Ni. Like Co, Ni doping suppresses the antiferromagnetic and structural phase transitions and gives rise to superconductivity for sufficiently large Ni doping. The spin lattice relaxation rate diverges at $T_N$, with a critical exponent consistent with 3D ordering of local moments. In the ordered state the spectra quickly broaden inhomogeneously with doping. We extract the average size of the ordered moment as a function of doping, and show that a model in which the order remains commensurate but with local amplitude variations i…
Measurement and control of magnetic order and correlations in real time is a rapidly developing scientific area relevant for magnetic memory and spintronics [1,15]. In these experiments an ultra-short laser pulse (pump) is first absorbed by excitations carrying electric dipole moment. These then give their energy to the magnetic subsystem monitored by a time-resolved probe. A lot of progress has been made in investigations of ferromagnets but antiferromagnets are more challenging. Here we introduce time-resolved two-magnon Raman scattering as a novel real time probe of magnetic correlations es…
In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 036401 (2011)), Lau, et al. investigated the single hole problem in an effective model containing Cu $d$ and O $2p$ orbitals by exact diagonalization on clusters composed of 32 CuO$_2$ unit cells. With full quantum fluctuations due to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) backgroud, they found that spin-polaron solutions with spin 3/2 become lowest energy solutions in certain region of Brillouin zone (BZ), which they claimed no similiar solutions were obtained in other models or approximations before. In this Comment, we would like to point out that such high-sp…
We report $^{17}$O(2,3) and $^{63}$Cu(2) spin-lattice relaxation rates and the $^{17}$O(2,3) spin-spin relaxation rate in different magnetic fields in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ near $T_c$. Together these measurements enable us to test the magnetic field dependence of the pseudogap effect on the spin susceptibility in different regions of the Brillouin zone using the known form factors for different nuclei as filters. Thus, we study the momentum dispersion of the pseudogap behavior. We find that near the antiferromagnetic wave vector the pseudogap is insensitive to magnetic fields up to 15 T. In the r…
We have performed extensive zero field muSR experiments on pure YBa2Cu3O6+y and diluted Y-rare-earth substituted Y0.92Eu0.08Ba2Cu3O6+y and Y0.925Nd0.075Ba2Cu3O6+y at light hole-doping. A common magnetic behavior is detected for all the three families, demonstrating negligible effects of the isovalent Y-substituent disorder. Two distinct regimes are identified, separated by a crossover, whose origin is attributed to the concurrent thermal activation of spin and charge degrees of freedom: a thermally activated and a re-entrant quenched-hole antiferromagnetic regime. The peculiar temperature and …
Neutron Scattering measurements for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ have identified small magnetic moments that increase in strength as the temperature is reduced below $T^\ast$ and further increase below $T_c$. An analysis of the data shows the moments are antiferromagnetic between the Cu-O planes with a correlation length of longer than 195 Åin the $a$-$b$ plane and about 35 Åalong the c-axis. The origin of the moments is unknown, and their properties are discusssed both in terms of Cu spin magnetism and orbital bond currents.
We report magnetoresistivity measurements on strongly underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x (x=6.25, 6.36) single crystals in applied magnetic fields H || c-axis. We identify two different contributions to both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistivities. The first contribution has the same sign as the temperature coefficient of the resistivity \partial ln(ρ_i)/\partial T (i={c,ab}). This contribution reflects the incoherent nature of the out-of-plane transport. The second contribution is positive, quadratic in field, with an onset temperature that correlates to the antiferromagnetic ordering.
We calculate the spin correlation function and the magnetic longitudinal and transverse susceptibilities of a two-dimensional antiferromagnet doped with a small concentration of holes, in the t-J model. We find that the motion of holes generates spin fluctuations which add to the quantum fluctuations, the spin correlations decaying with the inverse of the spin distance, while increasing with doping as the critical hole concentration, where the long-range order disappears, is approached. Moreover, the longitudinal susceptibility becomes finite in the presence of doping, due to the strong dampin…
The hole concentration dependence of the magnetic correlations is studied in very lightly-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x<$0.02), which shows coexistence of a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordered phase and a spin-glass phase at low temperatures. It is found that the spin-glass phase in the coexistence region also shows a diagonal spin modulation as in the pure spin-glass phase in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (0.02$\le x\le$0.055). Below $x\sim$0.02 the diagonal stripe structure is the same as that in $x\sim$0.02 with a volume fraction almost proportional to hole concentrati…
We investigate the manifestation of the stripes in the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in untwinned single crystals of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0.02 - 0.04) and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (y = 6.35 - 7.0). It is found that both systems show strongly temperature-dependent in-plane anisotropy in the lightly hole-doped region and that the anisotropy in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} grows with decreasing y below about 6.60 despite the decreasing orthorhombicity, which gives most direct evidence that electrons self-organize into a macroscopically anisotropic state. The transport is found to be easier along the dire…
We describe from advanced first principles calculations the energetics of oxygen doping and its relation to insulator-metal transitions in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. We find a strong tendency of doping oxygens to order into non-magnetic Cu$^{1+}$O$_x$ chains at any $x$. Ordering produces one-dimensional metallic bands, while configurations with non-aligned oxygens are insulating. The Cu$^{2+}$O$_2$ planes remain insulating and antiferromagnetic up to a threshold between $x$=0.25 and 0.5, above which a paramagnetic normal-metal state prevails. The in-plane antiferro-paramagnetic competi…
We study the dimensional crossover from 1D to 2D in half-filled and lightly doped, weakly interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders. In this case, the Hubbard ladders are equivalent to a N-band model. Using renormalization group techniques, we find, that the half-filled ladders exhibit (in the spin-sector) an odd-even effect only below a crossover energy E_{c}\propto exp[-a exp(c N)] (a<<1 and c\sim 1), i.e., below E_{c}, the interactions take place only within band pairs (j,N+1-j) [and within the band (N+1)/2 for N odd], such that even-leg ladders are an insulating spin-liquid, while odd-leg ladders …
We present a study of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistance (MR) in heavily-underdoped, antiferromagnetic YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}, which reveals a variety of striking features. The in-plane MR demonstrates a "d-wave"-like anisotropy upon rotating the magnetic field H within the ab plane. With decreasing temperature below 20-25 K the system acquires memory: exposing a crystal to the magnetic field results in a persistent in-plane resistivity anisotropy. The overall features can be explained by assuming that the CuO_2 planes contain a developed array of stripes accommodating the doped holes, …
The recently discovered coexistence of incommensurate antiferromagnetic neutron scattering peaks and commensurate resonance in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ is calling for an explanation. Within the t-J model, the doping and energy dependence of the spin dynamics of the underdoped bilayer cuprates in the normal state is studied based on the fermion-spin theory by considering the bilayer interactions. Incommensurate peaks are found at $[(1\pmδ)π,π] $ and $[π,(1\pmδ)π]$ at low energies with $δ$ initially increasing with doping at low dopings and then saturating at higher dopings. These incom…
The remarkable sensitivity of the c-axis resistivity and magnetoresistance in cuprates to the spin ordering is used to clarify the doping-induced transformation from an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator to a superconducting (SC) metal in RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} (R = Lu, Y) single crystals. The established phase diagram demonstrates that the AF and SC regions apparently overlap: the superconductivity in RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}, in contrast to La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, sets in before the long-range AF order is completely destroyed by hole doping. Magnetoresistance measurements of superconducting crystals with low T_c…
The central issue in high-temperature cuprate superconductors is the pseudogap state appearing below the pseudogap temperature $T^*$, which is well above the superconducting transition temperature. In this study, we theoretically investigate the rapid increase of the magnetic anisotropy below the pseudogap temperature detected by the recent torque-magnetometry measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ [Y. Sato et al., Nat. Phys., 13, 1074 (2017)]. Applying the spin Green's function formalism including the Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction arising from the buckling of the CuO$_2$ plane, we obtain res…
