The remarkable sensitivity of the c-axis resistivity and magnetoresistance in cuprates to the spin ordering is used to clarify the doping-induced transformation from an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator to a superconducting (SC) metal in RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} (R = Lu, Y) single crystals. The established phase diagram demonstrates that the AF and SC regions apparently overlap: the superconductivity in RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}, in contrast to La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, sets in before the long-range AF order is completely destroyed by hole doping. Magnetoresistance measurements of superconducting crystals with low T_c<15-20 K give a clear view of the magnetic-field induced superconductivity suppression and recovery of the long-range AF state. What still remains to be understood is whether the AF order actually persists in the SC state or just revives when the superconductivity is suppressed, and, in the former case, whether the antiferromagnetism and superconductivity reside in nanoscopically separated phases or coexist on an atomic scale.
We use c-axis resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements to study the interplay between antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) ordering in underdoped RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} (R = Lu, Y) single crystals. Both orders are found to emerge from an anisotropic 3D metallic state, upon which antiferromagnetism opposes superconductivity by driving the doped holes towards localization. Despite the competition, the superconductivity sets in before the AF order is completely destroyed and coexists with latter in a certain range of hole doping. We find also that strong magnetic fields affect the AF-S…
Hole induced changes in the antiferromagnetic structure of a lightly Ca doped Gd:Y_{1-x}Ca_xBa_2Cu_3O_6 copper oxide single crystal with x~0.008 is investigated by Gd3+ electron spin resonance. Holes do not localize to Ca2+ ions above 2.5 K since the charge distribution and spin susceptibility next to the Ca2+ are independent of temperature. Both hole doped and pristine crystals are magnetically twinned with an external magnetic field dependent antiferromagnetic domain structure. Unlike the undoped crystal, where the easy magnetic axis is along [100] at all temperatures, the easy direction in …
We investigate magnetic properties of lightly doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulators in the presence of non-magnetic impurities. Within the framework of the t-J model we calculate the doping dependence of the antiferromagnetic order parameter using the self-consistent diagrammatic techniques. We show that in the presence of non-magnetic impurities the antiferromagnetic order is more robust against hole doping in comparison with the impurity-free host, implying that magnetic order can re-appear upon Zn doping into lightly hole-doped cuprates. We argue that this is primarily due to the loss of …
We extend the methods recently introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 106 036401 (2011) to investigate correlations between two spin-polarons in a quasi-two-dimensional CuO2 layer. The low-energy wavefunctions for two doped holes introduced in a half-filled CuO2 plane with 32 copper and 64 oxygen sites are calculated explicitly using an efficient yet accurate truncation scheme to model the antiferromagnet background. The energetics and wavefucntions show that the charges form three-spin polarons and the spin is carried by a disturbance around the three-spin polaron core. The low-energy band results fr…
We have revealed new features in the out-of-plane resistivity rho_c of heavily underdoped RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} (R=Tm,Lu) single crystals, which give evidence for two distinct mechanisms contributing the c-axis transport. We have observed a crossover towards "metal-like" (d rho_c/d T > 0) behavior at the temperature T_m which quickly increases with decreasing doping. The "metal-like" conductivity contribution dominates at T < T_m and provides a saturation of the resistivity anisotropy, rho_c / rho_{ab}. The antiferromagnetic ordering is found to block this "metal-like" part of the c-axis conductivi…
Detailed behavior of the magnetoresistance (MR) is studied in lightly doped antiferromagnetic La_{1.99}Sr_{0.01}CuO_{4}, where, thanks to the weak ferromagnetic moment due to spin canting, the antiferromagnetic (AF) domain structure can be manipulated by the magnetic field. The MR behavior demonstrates that CuO_2 planes indeed contain anti-phase AF domain boundaries in which charges are confined, forming anti-phase stripes. The data suggest that a high magnetic field turns the anti-phase stripes into in-phase stripes, and the latter appear to give better conduction than the former, which chall…
Recent ESR data shows rotation of the antiferromagnetic (AF) easy axis in lightly doped layered cuprates upon lowering the temperature. We account for the ESR data and show that it has significant implications on spin and charge ordering according to the following scenario: In the high temperature phase AF domain walls coincide with (110) twin boundaries of an orthorhombic phase. A magnetic field leads to annihilation of neighboring domain walls resulting in antiphase boundaries. The latter are spin carriers, form ferromagnetic lines and may become charged in the doped system. However, hole or…
It is widely believed that the long-range antiferromagnetic order in the RBa2Cu3O6+x compounds (R=Y and rare earths except of Ce, Pr, Tb) is totally suppressed for the oxygen index x>0.4 (AFM insulator-metal transition). We present the results of the copper NQR/NMR studies of aged RBa2Cu3O6+x (R=Tm,Y) samples showing that a magnetic order can still be present at oxygen contents x up to at least 0.7 and at temperatures as high as 77K.
We show that lightly doped holes will be self-trapped in an antiferromagnetic spin background at low-temperatures, resulting in a spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. The underlying Mott physics is responsible for such novel self-localization of charge carriers. Interesting transport and dielectric properties are found as the consequences, including large doping-dependent thermopower and dielectric constant, low-temperature variable-range-hopping resistivity, as well as high-temperature strange-metal-like resistivity, which are consistent with experimental measurements in the high-T$_c…
The effects of nonmagnetic Zn and magnetic Ni substitution for Cu site on magnetism are studied by measurements of uniform magnetic susceptibility for lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCu_{1-z}M_zO_4 (M=Zn or Ni) polycrystalline samples. For the parent x=0, Zn doping suppresses the Néel temperature T_N whereas Ni doping hardly changes T_N up to z=0.3. For the lightly doped samples with T_N~0, the Ni doping recovers T_N. For the superconducting samples, the Ni doping induces the superconductivity-to-antiferromagnetic transition (or crossover). All the heavily Ni doped samples indicate a spin glass beha…
Systematic measurements of the magnetic susceptibility were performed on single crystals of lightly doped La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.03, 0.04 and 0.05). For all samples the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic susceptibility shows typical spin-glass features with spin-glass transition temperatures Tg of 6.3K, 5.5K and 5.0K for x=0.03, 0.04 and 0.05, respectively. The canonical spin-glass order parameter extracted from the in-plane susceptibility of all the samples follows a universal scaling curve. On the other hand, the out-of-plane magnetic susceptibility deviates from Curie law below a te…
Neutron diffraction measurements are presented measuring the responses of both magnetic and structural order parameters of parent and lightly Co-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 under the application of uniaxial pressure. We find that the uniaxial pressure induces a thermal shift in the onset of antiferromagnetic order that grows as a percentage of T_N as Co-doping is increased and the superconducting phase is approached. Additionally, as uniaxial pressure is increased within parent and lightly-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 on the first order side of the tricritical point, we observe a decoupling betwe…
Behavior of ρ_{ab}(T) and R_{H}(T) is presented for LSCO and YBCO single crystals in the lightly hole-doped antiferromagnetic region, with an emphasis on the R_{H}(T) data. In both systems, R_{H} is virtually constant at moderate temperatures and tends to increase at low temperatures. Since essentially the same behavior of ρ_{ab}(T) and R_{H}(T) is observed in both LSCO and YBCO, we discuss that the in-plane charge transport properties are universal among the cuprates in the lightly-doped regime and that the R_{H}(T) data we obtained represent the genuine behavior of the Hall effect in this re…
We present a study of the magnetic susceptibility in carefully detwinned La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 single crystals in the lightly-doped region (x=0-0.03), which demonstrates a remarkable in-plane anisotropy of the spin system. This anisotropy is found to persist after the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order is destroyed by hole doping, suggesting that doped holes break the AF order into domains in which the spin alignment is kept essentially intact. It turns out that the freezing of the spins taking place at low temperatures is also notably anisotropic, implying that the "spin-glass" feature is …
A central question in the high temperature cuprate superconductors is the fate of the parent Mott insulator upon charge doping. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the local electronic structure of lightly doped cuprate in the antiferromagnetic insulating regime. We show that the doped charge induces a spectral weight transfer from the high energy Hubbard bands to the low energy in-gap states. With increasing doping, a V-shaped density of state suppression occurs at the Fermi level, which is accompanied by the emergence of checkerboard charge order. The new STM perspective…
The relaxation function theory of doped two-dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AF) system in the paramagnetic state is presented taking into account the hole subsystem as well as both the electron and AF correlations. The expression for fourth frequency moment of relaxation shape function is derived within the $t-J$ model. The presentation obeys rotational symmetry of the spin correlation functions and is valid for all wave vectors through the Brillouin zone. The spin diffusion contribution to relaxation rates is evaluated and is shown to play a significant role in carrier free …
We report $^{75}$As NMR measurements in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ doped with Ni. Like Co, Ni doping suppresses the antiferromagnetic and structural phase transitions and gives rise to superconductivity for sufficiently large Ni doping. The spin lattice relaxation rate diverges at $T_N$, with a critical exponent consistent with 3D ordering of local moments. In the ordered state the spectra quickly broaden inhomogeneously with doping. We extract the average size of the ordered moment as a function of doping, and show that a model in which the order remains commensurate but with local amplitude variations i…
In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 036401 (2011)), Lau, et al. investigated the single hole problem in an effective model containing Cu $d$ and O $2p$ orbitals by exact diagonalization on clusters composed of 32 CuO$_2$ unit cells. With full quantum fluctuations due to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) backgroud, they found that spin-polaron solutions with spin 3/2 become lowest energy solutions in certain region of Brillouin zone (BZ), which they claimed no similiar solutions were obtained in other models or approximations before. In this Comment, we would like to point out that such high-sp…
We have performed extensive zero field muSR experiments on pure YBa2Cu3O6+y and diluted Y-rare-earth substituted Y0.92Eu0.08Ba2Cu3O6+y and Y0.925Nd0.075Ba2Cu3O6+y at light hole-doping. A common magnetic behavior is detected for all the three families, demonstrating negligible effects of the isovalent Y-substituent disorder. Two distinct regimes are identified, separated by a crossover, whose origin is attributed to the concurrent thermal activation of spin and charge degrees of freedom: a thermally activated and a re-entrant quenched-hole antiferromagnetic regime. The peculiar temperature and …
The hole concentration dependence of the magnetic correlations is studied in very lightly-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x<$0.02), which shows coexistence of a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordered phase and a spin-glass phase at low temperatures. It is found that the spin-glass phase in the coexistence region also shows a diagonal spin modulation as in the pure spin-glass phase in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (0.02$\le x\le$0.055). Below $x\sim$0.02 the diagonal stripe structure is the same as that in $x\sim$0.02 with a volume fraction almost proportional to hole concentrati…
Copper oxide high temperature superconductors universally exhibit multiple forms of electronically ordered phases that break the native translational symmetry of the CuO2 planes. The interplay between these orders and the superconducting ground state, as well as how they arise through doping a Mott insulator, is essential to decode the mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity. Over the years, various forms of electronic liquid crystal phases including charge/spin stripes and incommensurate charge-density-waves (CDWs) were found to emerge out of a correlated metallic ground state in und…
Numerical studies of the two-dimensional d-p model using the Gutzwiller ansatz have exhibited the incommensurate antiferromagnetic state coexisting with superconductivity in the under- and lightly doped regions. Our results are based on the variational Monte Carlo method for the three-band Hubbard model with d and p orbitals. We obtained the finite superconducting condensation energy for the coexistent sate at the doping rate $x=1/8$, 1/12, and 1/16, up to the systems of 256 unit cells with 768 atoms (oxygen and copper atoms). The phase diagram for the hole-doped case is consistent with recent…
We consider the extended 2D $t-t'-t''-J$ model at zero temperature. Parameters of the model corresponds to doping by holes. Using the low doping effective action we demonstrate that the system can 1) preserve the long range collinear antiferromagnetic order, 2) lead to a spin spiral state (static or dynamic), 3) lead to the phase separation instability. We show that at parameters of the effective action corresponding to the single layer cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ the spin spiral ground state is realized. We derive properties of magnetic excitations and calculate quantum fluctuations. Quan…
We report extensive muon spin rotation measurements on the lightly doped Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6+y compound, which allows us to disentangle the effect of disorder, controlled by random Ca2+ substitution, from that of mere doping. A 3D phase diagram of lightly doped cuprates is accurately drawn, showing that a thermally activated antiferromagnetic phase competes with superconductivity around a quantum critical point, hidden underneath a frozen insulating magnetic state. Disorder suppresses both competing order parameters and unveils the underlying frozen state. Doping and disorder destroy the activated…
Measurements of the static magnetization, susceptibility and ESR of Gd spin probes have been performed to study the properties of antiferromagnetically ordered La_{2-x-y}Eu_ySr_xCuO_4 (x less or equal 0.02) with the low temperature tetragonal structure. According to the static magnetic measurements the CuO_2 planes are magnetically decoupled in this structural phase. The ESR study reveals strong magnetic fluctuations at the ESR frequency which are not present in the orthorhombic phase. It is argued that this drastic enhancement of the spin fluctuations is due to a considerable weakening of the…
We investigate whether the spin or charge degrees of freedom are responsible for the nodal gap in underdoped cuprates by performing inelastic neutron scattering and x-ray diffraction measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, which is on the edge of the antiferromagnetic phase. We found that fluctuating incommensurate spin-density-wave (SDW) with a the bottom part of an hourglass dispersion exists even in this magnetic sample. The strongest component of these fluctuations diminishes at the same temperature where the nodal gap opens. X-ray scattering measurements on the same crystal show no signa…
Superconductivity emerges from the cuprate antiferromagnetic Mott state with hole doping. The resulting electronic structure is not understood, although changes in the state of oxygen atoms appear paramount. Hole doping first destroys the Mott state yielding a weak insulator where electrons localize only at low temperatures without a full energy gap. At higher doping, the 'pseudogap', a weakly conducting state with an anisotropic energy gap and intra-unit-cell breaking of 90\degree-rotational (C4v) symmetry appears. However, a direct visualization of the emergence of these phenomena with incre…
The emergence of carrier-pairing from the electronically inhomogeneous phase of lightly hole-doped copper oxides has been investigated through magnetoresistance measurements on 1222-type ruthenocuprates RuSr2(R,Ce)2Cu2O10-d, principally with R = Gd, Sm, Nd. A well-defined transition at which superconducting fluctuations emerge is discovered at a remarkably low critical doping, pc = 0.0084, deep within the antiferromagnetic phase. Systematic variations of the low temperature fluctuation density with doping and cell volume demonstrate the intrinsic nature of the electronic inhomogeneity and prov…
We study a model of a stripe ordered doped antiferromagnet consisting of coupled Hubbard ladders which can be tuned from quasi-one-dimensional to two-dimensional. We solve for the magnetization and charge density on the ladders by Hartree-Fock theory and find a set of solutions with lightly doped ``spin-stripes'' which are antiferromagnetic and more heavily doped anti-phase ``charge-stripes''. Both the spin- and charge-stripes have electronic spectral weight near the Fermi energy but in different regions of the Brillouin zone; the spin-stripes in the ``nodal'' region, near (π/2,π/2), and the c…
We have studied anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR) and magnetization with rotating magnetic field (B) within $CuO_2$ plane in lightly doped AF $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}$. \emph{A giant anisotropy} in MR is observed at low temperature below 5 K. The c-axis resistivity can be tuned about one order of magnitude just by changing B direction within $CuO_2$ plane and a scaling behavior between out-of-plane and in-plane MR is found. A "Spin valve" effect is proposed to understand the giant anisotropy of out-of-plane MR and the evolution of scaling parameters with the external field. It is found that the f…
We use neutron scattering to study the influence of a magnetic field on spin structures of Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. On cooling from room temperature, Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ goes through a series of antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transitions with different noncollinear spin structures. While a c-axis aligned magnetic field does not alter the basic zero-field noncollinear spin structures, a field parallel to the CuO$_2$ plane can transform the noncollinear structure to a collinear one ("spin-flop" transition), induce magnetic disorder along the c-axis, and cause hysteresis in the AF phase transitions. By comparing t…
We apply a Hartree-Fock approximation to a two-orbital model proposed for Fe pnictide superconductors. It is found that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with the ordering vector Q=(pi,0) is realized. The AFM order appears simultaneously with ferro-orbital order, the latter leads to a secondary lattice distortion. We also investigate the influence of doping on the AFM order. The size of the AFM moment changes continuously for lightly doped cases, but when the amount of doped carriers exceeds a certain value the AFM state is suddenly destroyed. We also show that Fermi surfaces remain and change…
We study the distribution of electronic spectral weight in a doped antiferromagnet with various types of charge order and compare to angle resolved photoemission experiments on lightly doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) and electron doped Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$. Calculations on in-phase stripe and bubble phases for the electron doped system are both in good agreement with experiment including in particular the existence of in-gap spectral weight. In addition we find that for in-phase stripes, in contrast to anti-phase stripes, the chemical potential is likely to move with doping. For …

We study the t-t'-t''-J model with parameters chosen to model an electron-doped high temperature superconductor. The model with one, two and four charge carriers is solved on a 32-site lattice using exact diagonalization. Our results demonstrate that at doping levels up to x=0.125 the model possesses robust antiferromagnetic correlation. When doped with one charge carrier, the ground state has momenta (\pmπ,0) and (0,\pmπ). On further doping, charge carriers are unbound and the momentum distribution function can be constructed from that of the single-carrier ground state. The Fermi surface res…
The emergence and the evolution of the metallic charge transport in the La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} system from lightly- to optimally-doped samples (x = 0.01 - 0.17) are studied. We demonstrate that in high-quality single crystals the in-plane resistivity shows a metallic behavior for ALL values of x at moderate temperatures and that the hole mobility at 300 K changes only by a factor of 3 from x = 0.01 to 0.17, where its x-dependence is found to be intriguingly similar to that of the inverse antiferromagnetic correlation length. We discuss an incoherent-metal picture and a charged-stripe scenario a…
We find a mixed chirality $d$-wave superconducting state in the coexistence region between antiferromagnetism and interaction-driven superconductivity in lightly doped honeycomb materials. This state has a topological chiral $d+id$-wave symmetry in one Dirac valley but $d-id$-wave symmetry in the other valley and hosts two counter-propagating edge states, protected in the absence of intervalley scattering. A first-order topological phase transition, with no bulk gap closing, separates the chiral $d$-wave state at small magnetic moments from the mixed chirality $d$-wave phase.
Unusual features in the in-plane charge transport in lightly hole-doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals are described. Notably, both the in-plane resistivity and the Hall coefficient show a metallic behavior at moderate temperatures even in the long-range-ordered antiferromagnetic phase, which obviously violates the Mott-Ioffe-Regel criterion for the metallic transport and can hardly be understood without employing the role of charge stripes. Moreover, the mobility of holes in this "metallic" antiferromagnetic state is found to be virtually the same as that in optimally-doped crystals, w…
We discuss evolution of the Fermi surface (FS) topology with doping in electron doped cuprates within the framework of a one-band Hubbard Hamiltonian, where antiferromagnetism and superconductivity are assumed to coexist in a uniform phase. In the lightly doped insulator, the FS consists of electron pockets around the $(π,0)$ points. The first change in the FS topology occurs in the optimally doped region when an additional hole pocket appears at the nodal point. The second change in topology takes place in the overdoped regime ($\sim18%$) where antiferromagnetism disappears and a large $(π,π)…
Although La(2)Cu(1-x)Li(x)O(4) [Li-LCO] differs from La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) [Sr-LCO] in many ways (e.g., the absence of metallic transport, high-Tc superconductivity, and incommensurate antiferromagnetic correlations), it has been known that certain magnetic properties are remarkably similar. The present work establishes the detailed bulk magnetic phase diagram of Li-LCO (0 <= x <= 0.07), which is found to be nearly identical to that of lightly-doped Sr-LCO, and therefore extends the universality of the phase diagram to hole-doped but nonsuperconducting cuprates.
We examine the thermodynamic properties of the hole- and electron-doped cuprates by using the t-t'-t''-J model. We find that the chemical potential shows different doping dependence between the hole and electron dopings. Recent experimental data of the chemical potential shift are reproduced except for lightly underdoped region in the hole doping where stripe and/or charge inhomogeneity are expected to be important. The entropy is also calculated as a function of the carrier concentration. It is found that the entropy of the electron-doped system is smaller than that of the hole-doped systems.…
High transverse magnetic field and zero field muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements have been carried out in a lightly oxygen-doped high-Tc parent compound La2CuO4 in a temperature range from 2 K to 300 K. As in the stoichiometric compound, muon spin rotation spectra reveal, along with the antiferromagnetic local field, the presence of an additional source of magnetic field at the muon. The results indicate that this second magnetic order is driven by the antiferromagnetism at low temperature but the two magnetic orders decouple at higher temperature. The ability of muSR to detect thi…
Hydrogen (H)-doped LaFeAsO is a prototypical iron-based superconductor. However, its phase diagram extends beyond the standard framework, where a superconducting (SC) phase follows an antiferromagnetic (AF) phase upon carrier doping; instead, the SC phase is sandwiched between two AF phases appearing in lightly and heavily H-doped regimes. We performed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements under pressure, focusing on the second AF phase in the heavily H-doped regime. The second AF phase is strongly suppressed when a pressure of 3.0 GPa is applied, and apparently shifts to a highly H-do…
The pseudogap is a central puzzle of cuprate superconductors. Its connection to the Mott insulator at low doping $p$ remains ambiguous and its relation to the charge order that reconstructs the Fermi surface at intermediate $p$ is still unclear. Here we use measurements of the Hall coefficient in magnetic fields up to 88 T to show that Fermi-surface reconstruction by charge order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ ends sharply at a critical doping $p = 0.16$, distinctly lower than the pseudogap critical point at $p^* = 0.19$. This shows that pseudogap and charge order are separate phenomena. We then find t…
The effects of pressure up to $\sim 20$ kbar, on the structural phase transition of SrFe$_2$As$_2$ and lightly Sn-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, as well as on the superconducting transition temperature and upper critical field of (Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals have been studied. All the transition temperatures decrease with pressure in an almost linear fashion. Under pressure, the upper critical field curve, $H_{c2}(T)$, for (Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ shifts down in temperature to follow the zero field $T_c$ with very little change in slope. Composite $P - T$ phase diagram…
The parent compound of the copper-oxide high temperature superconductors is a Mott insulator. Superconductivity is realized by doping an appropriate amount of charge carriers. How a Mott insulator transforms into a superconductor is crucial in understanding the unusual physical properties of high temperature superconductors and the superconductivity mechanism. Here we report high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurement on heavily underdoped Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d system. The electronic structure of the lightly-doped samples exhibit a number of characteristics: existence of an energy gap…
We present a theoretical model to show that the transition from an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase to the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductivity occurs through a robust companion of a finite momentum pairing between $({\bf k},\uparrow)$ and $(-{\bf k}-{\bf Q},\downarrow)$ electrons, namely pair-density wave (PDW) state, where ${\bf Q}=(π,π)$ is the AFM wavevector. Interestingly, the spatial structure of the PDW is constrained to be a $p+ip$-wave symmetry, which follows $p_{\bf k}=p_{-{\bf k}-{\bf Q}}$ under fermions exchange in cuprates, dictating a spin-singlet pairing. Furthermore, the PDW state…
We present time-of-fight neutron-scattering measurements on single crystals of $La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$ (LBCO) with 0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.095 and $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ (LSCO) with x = 0.08 and 0.11. This range of dopings spans much of the phase diagram relevant to high temperature cuprate superconductivity, ranging from insulating, three dimensional (3D) commensurate long range antiferromagnetic order, for x $\leq$ 0.02, to two dimensional (2D) incommensurate antiferromagnetism co-existing with superconductivity for x $\geq$ 0.05. Previous work on lightly doped LBCO with x = 0.035 showed a clea…
In the cuprates, the lightly-doped region is of major interest because superconductivity, antiferromagnetism, and the pseudogap state \cite{Timusk,Lee,Anderson} come together near a critical doping value $x_c$. These states are deeply influenced by phase fluctuations \cite{Emery} which lead to a vortex-liquid state that surrounds the superconducting region \cite{WangPRB01,WangPRB06}. However, many questions \cite{Doniach,Fisher,FisherLee,Tesanovic,Sachdev} related to the nature of the transition and vortex-liquid state at very low tempera- tures $T$ remain open because the diamagnetic signal i…
Magnetic spins and charges interact strongly in high-temperature superconductors. New physics emerges as layers of copper oxide are tuned towards the boundary of the superconducting phase. As the pseudogap increases the characteristic spin excitation energy decreases. We show that our well-annealed YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO6+x) single crystals are orthorhombic and superconducting but not antiferromagnetically ordered. Near the critical concentration for superconductivity for x = 0.35 the spins fluctuate on two energy scales, one a relaxational spin response at ~2 meV and the other a slow central mode …
The magnetic field affects the motion of electrons and the orientation of spins in solids, but it is believed to have little impact on the crystal structure. This common perception has been challenged recently by ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys, where the spin-lattice coupling is so strong that crystallographic axes even in a fixed sample are forced to rotate, following the direction of moments. One would, however, least expect any structural change to be induced in antiferromagnets where spins are antiparallel and give no net moment. Here we report on such unexpected magnetic shape-memory e…
We present a combined high-resolution x-ray diffraction and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) study of as-grown BaFe2As2. The structural/magnetic transitions must be described as a two-step process. At T_S = 134.5 K we observe the onset of a second-order structural transition from the high-temperature paramagnetic tetragonal structure to a paramagnetic orthorhombic phase, followed by a discontinuous step in the structural order parameter that is coincident with a first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at T_N = 133.75 K. These data, together with detailed high-resolution x-ray s…
High-Tc superconductivity in cuprates is generally believed to arise from carrier doping an antiferromagnetic Mott (AFM) insulator. Theoretical proposals and emerging experimental evidence suggest that this process leads to the formation of intriguing electronic liquid crystal phases. These phases are characterized by ordered charge and/or spin density modulations, and thought to be intimately tied to the subsequent emergence of superconductivity. The most elusive, insulating charge-stripe crystal phase is predicted to occur when a small density of holes is doped into the charge-transfer insul…
We investigate the thermodynamic and transport properties of molybdenum-doped BaFe2As2 (122) crystals, the first report of hole doping using a 4d element. The chemical substitution of Mo in place of Fe is possible up to ~ 7%. For Ba(Fe1-xMox)2As2, the suppression rate of the magnetic transition temperature with x is the same as in 3d Cr-doped 122 and is independent of the unit cell changes. This illustrates that temperature-composition phase diagram for hole-doped 122 can be simply parameterized by x, similar to the electron-doped 122 systems found in literature. Compared to 122 with a coupled…
We present neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of lightly doped $La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$, with $0 \leq x \leq? 0.035$. These reveal the evolution of the magnetism in this prototypical doped Mott insulator from a three dimensional (3D) commensurate (C) antiferromagnetic ground state, which orders at a relatively high TN, to a two dimensional (2D) incommensurate (IC) ground state with finite ranged static correlations, which appear below a relatively low effective TN. At low temperatures, the 2D IC magnetism co-exists with the 3D C magnetism for doping concentrations as low as ? 0.…
We use the idea of the Wigner probability distribution (WPD) in a reduced scattering phase space (RPS) for the elastic scattering cross-section, with the help of a Tight-Binding (TB) numerical procedure allowing us to consider the anisotropic quantum effects, to phenomenologically predict several phases in these two novel unconventional superconductors. Unlike our previous works with pieces of evidence that these two compounds are in the unitary strong scattering regime and that superconductivity is suppressed by the atoms of strontium in both materials, several phases are built. In the case o…
