We develop the formalism of the finite modular group $Γ'_4 \equiv S'_4$, a double cover of the modular permutation group $Γ_4 \simeq S_4$, for theories of flavour. The integer weight $k>0$ of the level 4 modular forms indispensable for the formalism can be even or odd. We explicitly construct the lowest-weight ($k=1$) modular forms in terms of two Jacobi theta constants, denoted as $\varepsilon(τ)$ and $θ(τ)$, $τ$ being the modulus. We show that these forms furnish a 3D representation of $S'_4$ not present for $S_4$. Having derived the $S'_4$ multiplication rules and Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, we construct multiplets of modular forms of weights up to $k=10$. These are expressed as polynomials in $\varepsilon$ and $θ$, bypassing the need to search for non-linear constraints. We further show that within $S'_4$ there are two options to define the (generalised) CP transformation and we discuss the possible residual symmetries in theories based on modular and CP invariance. Finally, we provide two examples of application of our results, constructing phenomenologically viable lepton flavour models.
The formalism of combined finite modular and generalised CP (gCP) symmetries for theories of flavour is developed. The corresponding consistency conditions for the two symmetry transformations acting on the modulus $τ$ and on the matter fields are derived. The implications of gCP symmetry in theories of flavour based on modular invariance described by finite modular groups are illustrated with the example of a modular $S_4$ model of lepton flavour. Due to the addition of the gCP symmetry, viable modular models turn out to be more constrained, with the modulus $τ$ being the only source of CP vi…
We investigate the implications for fermion mass models in heterotic orbifolds of the modular symmetry mixing twisted states localized at different fixed points. We show that, unlike in the case of continuous gauge symmetries, the mass eigenstates do not mix under the symmetry; thus coupling constants in the low-energy theory are invariant functions of the moduli.
We study the problem of modulus stabilisation in the framework of the modular symmetry approach to the flavour problem. By analysing simple UV-motivated CP-invariant potentials for the modulus $τ$ we find that a class of these potentials has (non-fine-tuned) CP-breaking minima in the vicinity of the point of $\mathbb{Z}_3^{ST}$ residual symmetry, $τ\simeq e^{2πi/3}$. Stabilising the modulus at these novel minima breaks spontaneously the CP symmetry and can naturally explain the mass hierarchies of charged leptons and possibly of quarks.
The idea of modular invariance provides a novel explanation of flavour mixing. Within the context of finite modular symmetries $Γ_N$ and for a given element $γ\in Γ_N$, we present an algorithm for finding stabilisers (specific values for moduli fields $τ_γ$ which remain unchanged under the action associated to $γ$). We then employ this algorithm to find all stabilisers for each element of finite modular groups for $N=2$ to $5$, namely, $Γ_2\simeq S_3$, $Γ_3\simeq A_4$, $Γ_4\simeq S_4$ and $Γ_5\simeq A_5$. These stabilisers then leave preserved a specific cyclic subgroup of $Γ_N$. This is of in…
In the framework of the modular symmetry approach to lepton flavour, we consider a class of theories where matter superfields transform in representations of the finite modular group $Γ_5 \simeq A_5$. We explicitly construct a basis for the 11 modular forms of weight 2 and level 5. We show how these forms arrange themselves into two triplets and a quintet of $A_5$. We also present multiplets of modular forms of higher weight. Finally, we provide an example of application of our results, constructing two models of neutrino masses and mixing based on the supersymmetric Weinberg operator.
We develop a general formalism for multiple moduli and their associated modular symmetries. We apply this formalism to an example based on three moduli with finite modular symmetries $S_4^A$, $S_4^B$ and $S_4^C$, associated with two right-handed neutrinos and the charged lepton sector, respectively. The symmetry is broken by two bi-triplet scalars to the diagonal $S_4$ subgroup. The low energy effective theory involves the three independent moduli fields $τ_A$, $τ_B$ and $τ_C$, which preserve the residual modular subgroups $Z_3^A$, $Z_2^B$ and $Z_3^C$, in their respective sectors, leading to t…
Sum rules in the lepton sector provide an extremely valuable tool to classify flavour models in terms of relations between neutrino masses and mixing parameters testable in a plethora of experiments. In this manuscript we identify new leptonic sum rules arising in models with modular symmetries with residual symmetries. These models simultaneously present neutrino mass sum rules, involving masses and Majorana phases, and mixing sum rules, connecting the mixing angles and the Dirac CP-violating phase. The simultaneous appearance of both types of sum rules leads to some non-trivial interplay, fo…
We explore a new class of supersymmetric models for lepton masses and mixing angles where the role of flavour symmetry is played by modular invariance. The building blocks are modular forms of level N and matter supermultiplets, both transforming in representations of a finite discrete group Gamma_N. In the simplest version of these models, Yukawa couplings are just modular forms and the only source of flavour symmetry breaking is the vacuum expectation value of a single complex field, the modulus. In the special case where modular forms are constant functions the whole construction collapses …
We construct lepton flavour models based on two $A_4$ modular symmetries. The two $A_4$ are broken by a bi-triplet field to the diagonal $A_4$ subgroup, resulting in an effective modular $A_4$ flavour symmetry with two moduli. We employ these moduli as stabilisers, that preserve distinct residual symmetries, enabling us to obtain Tri-Maximal 2 (TM2) mixing with a minimal field content (without flavons).

We study the implications of a large nu_mu - nu_tau mixing angle on flavour changing transitions of quarks and leptons in supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. Two patterns of supersymmetry breaking are considered, models with modular invariance and the standard scenario of universal soft breaking terms at the GUT scale. The analysis is performed for two symmetry groups G x U(1)_F, with G=SU(5) and G=SU(3)^3, where U(1)_F is a family symmetry. Models with modular invariance are in agreement with observations only for restricted scalar quark and gaugino masses, (M_squark^2)/(m_gluino…
We propose a theory of flavour based on abelian horizontal gauge symmetries and modular invariances. We construct explicit supergravity models where the scale of the horizontal $U(1)$ symmetry breaking is fixed by the Green-Schwarz mechanism for anomaly cancellation. The supersymmetric spectrum is obtained in terms of the $U(1)$ charges which are determined by the Yukawa matrices.
We study the modular symmetry of zero-modes on $T_1^2 \times T_2^2$ and orbifold compactifications with magnetic fluxes, $M_1,M_2$, where modulus parameters are identified. This identification breaks the modular symmetry of $T^2_1 \times T^2_2$, $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})_1 \times SL(2,\mathbb{Z})_2$ to $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})\equivΓ$. Each of the wavefunctions on $T^2_1 \times T^2_2$ and orbifolds behaves as the modular forms of weight 1 for the principal congruence subgroup $Γ$($N$), $N$ being 2 times the least common multiple of $M_1$ and $M_2$. Then, zero-modes transform each other under the modular symm…

We present a model of leptonic mixing based on two $A_5$ modular symmetries using the Weinberg operator. The two modular symmetries are broken to the respective diagonal $A_5$ subgroup. At the effective level, the model behaves as a model with a single $A_5$ modular flavour symmetry, but with two moduli. Using both as stabilisers, different residual symmetries are preserved, leading to golden ratio mixing that is perturbed by a rotation.
Recent work on flavour changing neutral current effects in supersymmetric models is reviewed. The emphasis is put on new issues related to solutions to the flavour problem through new symmetries: GUTs, horizontal symmetries, modular invariances.
We extend the even weight modular forms of modular invariant approach to general integral weight modular forms. We find that the modular forms of integral weights and level $N$ can be arranged into irreducible representations of the homogeneous finite modular group $Γ'_N$ which is the double covering of $Γ_N$. The lowest weight 1 modular forms of level 3 are constructed in terms of Dedekind eta-function, and they transform as a doublet of $Γ'_3 \cong T'$. The modular forms of weights 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are presented. We build a model of lepton masses and mixing based on $T'$ modular symmetry.
We study the modular symmetry on magnetized toroidal orbifolds with Scherk-Schwarz phases. In particular, we investigate finite modular flavor groups for three-generation modes on magnetized orbifolds. The three-generation modes can be the three-dimensional irreducible representations of covering groups and central extended groups of $Γ_N$ for $N=3,4,5,7,8,16$, that is, covering groups of $Δ(6(N/2)^2)$ for $N=$ even and central extensions of $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z}_{N})$ for $N=$odd with Scherk-Schwarz phases. We also study anomaly behaviors.
We study a double covering of modular $A_4$ flavor symmetry in which we construct lepton models in cases of canonical seesaw and radiative seesaw models. Through $χ$ square numerical analysis, we show some predictions for the cases, depending on normal and inverted hierarchies.
We perform a comprehensive study of the homogeneous finite modular group $A'_5$ which is the double covering of $A_5$. The integral weight and level 5 modular forms have been constructed up to weight 6 and they are decomposed into the irreducible representations of $A'_5$. Then we perform a systematical analysis of the $A'_5$ modular models for lepton masses and mixing. The phenomenologically viable models with minimal number of free parameters and the results of fit are presented. We find out 15 models with 9 real free parameters which can accommodate the experimental data of lepton sector. A…
We give a brief introduction to flavour physics. The first part covers the flavour structure of the Standard Model, how the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism is tested and provides examples of searches for new physics using flavour observables, such as meson mixing and rare decays. In the second part we give a brief overview of the recent flavour anomalies and how the Higgs can act as a new flavour probe.
We consider for the first time level 7 modular invariant flavour models where the lepton mixing originates from the breaking of modular symmetry and couplings responsible for lepton masses are modular forms. The latter are decomposed into irreducible multiplets of the finite modular group $Γ_7$, which is isomorphic to $PSL(2,Z_{7})$, the projective special linear group of two dimensional matrices over the finite Galois field of seven elements, containing 168 elements, sometimes written as $PSL_2(7)$ or $Σ(168)$. At weight 2, there are 26 linearly independent modular forms, organised into a tri…
We discuss a minimal flavour model with twin modular symmetries, leading to trimaximal TM$_1$ lepton mixing in which the first column of the tri-bimaximal lepton mixing matrix is preserved. The model involves two modular $S_4$ groups, one acting in the neutrino sector, associated with a modulus field value $τ_{SU}$ with residual $Z^{SU}_2$ symmetry, and one acting in the charged lepton sector, associated with a modulus field value $τ_{T}$ with residual $Z^{T}_3$ symmetry. Apart from the predictions of TM$_1$ mixing, the model leads to a new neutrino mass sum rule which implies lower bounds on …
This Thesis presents my personal contributions to two distinct fields, namely the recent experimental anomalies in B-meson decays, and the longstanding quest for a theoretical explanation of lepton masses and mixings, under a unifying umbrella: Flavour Physics. The modern view of the Standard Model as an effective theory is motivated, and the dual role of flavour, as a probe of New Physics effects on one side, and as a piece of the puzzle itself on the other, is emphasized. By jointly discussing two physics cases of different nature, I attempt to offer a broader perspective on the current stat…
We study quark and lepton masses and mixings in a double covering of modular $A_4$ flavor symmetry in which we search for common solution of a single modulus $τ$, applying chi-square numerical analysis under the as minimum framework as possible. We have found the common region of $τ$ within $5σ$ interval that is narrow in case of normal hierarchy, but not found in case of inverted hierarchy.
These proceedings review the status of present and future bounds on muonic lepton flavour violating transitions in the context of an effective-field theory defined below the electroweak scale. A specific focus is set on the phenomenology of $μ\to eγ$, $μ\to 3e$ transitions and coherent $μ\to e$ nuclear conversion in the light of current and future experiments. Once the experimental limits are recast into bounds at higher scales, it is shown that the interplay between the various experiments is crucial to cover all corners of the parameter space.
In this paper, we investigate the double covering of modular $Γ^{}_5 \simeq A^{}_5$ group and derive all the modular forms of weight one for the first time. The modular forms of higher weights are also explicitly given by decomposing the direct products of weight-one forms. For the double covering group $Γ^\prime_5 \simeq A^\prime_5$, there exist two inequivalent two-dimensional irreducible representations, into which we can assign two right-handed neutrino singlets in the minimal seesaw model. Two concrete models with such a salient feature have been constructed to successfully explain lepton…
We perform a comprehensive analysis of the homogeneous finite modular group $Γ'_4\equiv S'_4$ which is the double covering of $S_4$ group. The weight 1 modular forms of level 4 are constructed in terms of Dedekind eta function, and they transform as a triplet $\mathbf{\hat{3}'}$ of $S'_4$. The integral weight modular forms until weight 6 are built from the tensor products of weight 1 modular forms. We perform a systematical classification of $S'_4$ modular models for lepton masses and mixing with/without generalized CP, where the left-handed leptons are assigned to triplet of $S'_4$ and right-…
We compute the spectral density of the (Hermitean) Dirac operator in Quantum Chromodynamics with two light degenerate quarks near the origin. We use CLS/ALPHA lattices generated with two flavours of O(a)-improved Wilson fermions corresponding to pseudoscalar meson masses down to 190 MeV, and with spacings in the range 0.05-0.08 fm. Thanks to the coverage of parameter space, we can extrapolate our data to the chiral and continuum limits with confidence. The results show that the spectral density at the origin is non-zero because the low modes of the Dirac operator do condense as expected in the…
We present the first example of a grand unified theory (GUT) with a modular symmetry interpreted as a family symmetry. The theory is based on supersymmetric $SU(5)$ in 6d, where the two extra dimensions are compactified on a $T_2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold. We have shown that, if there is a finite modular symmetry, then it can only be $A_4$ with an (infinite) discrete choice of moduli, where we focus on $τ= ω=e^{i2π/3}$, the unique solution with $|τ|=1$. The fields on the branes respect a generalised CP and flavour symmetry $A_4\ltimes \mathbb{Z}_2$ which is isomorphic to $S_4$ which leads to an e…

We study the heavy quark mass dependence of selected observables constructed from heavy-light meson correlation functions in small-volume two-flavour lattice QCD after taking the continuum limit. The light quark mass is tuned to zero, whereas the range of available heavy quark masses $m_h$ covers a region extending from around the charm to beyond the bottom quark mass scale. This allows entering the asymptotic mass-scaling regime as $1/m_h \to 0$ and performing well-controlled extrapolations to the infinite-mass limit. Our results are then compared to predictions obtained in the static limit o…
We report on the ALPHA Collaboration's lattice B-physics programme based on N_f=2 O(a) improved Wilson fermions and HQET, including all NLO effects in the inverse heavy quark mass, as well as non-perturbative renormalization and matching, to fix the parameters of the effective theory. Our simulations in large physical volume cover 3 lattice spacings a ~ (0.08-0.05) fm and pion masses down to 190 MeV to control continuum and chiral extrapolations. We present the status of results for the b-quark mass and the B_(s)-meson decay constants, f_B and f_{B_s}.
We generalize the modular invariance approach to include the half-integral weight modular forms. Accordingly the modular group should be extended to its metaplectic covering group for consistency. We introduce the well-defined half-integral weight modular forms for congruence subgroup $Γ(4N)$ and show that they can be decomposed into the irreducible multiplets of finite metaplectic group $\widetildeΓ_{4N}$. We construct concrete expressions of the half-integral/integral modular forms for $Γ(4)$ up to weight 6 and arrange them into the irreducible representations of $\widetildeΓ_4$. We present …
