A compact and robust coherent laser light source that provides spectral coverage from the ultraviolet to infrared is desirable for numerous applications, including heterodyne super resolution imaging[1], broadband infrared microscopy[2], protein structure determination[3], and standoff atmospheric trace-gas detection[4]. Addressing these demanding measurement problems, laser frequency combs[5] combine user-defined spectral resolution with sub-femtosecond timing and waveform control to enable new modalities of high-resolution, high-speed, and broadband spectroscopy[6-9]. In this Letter we introduce a scalable source of near-single-cycle, 0.56 MW pulses generated from robust and low-noise erbium fiber (Er:fiber) technology, and we use it to generate a frequency comb that spans six octaves from the ultraviolet (350 nm) to mid-infrared (22500 nm). The high peak power allows us to exploit the second-order nonlinearities in infrared-transparent, nonlinear crystals (LiNbO$_3$, GaSe, and CSP) to provide a robust source of phase-stable infrared ultra-short pulses with simultaneous spectral brightness exceeding that of an infrared synchrotron[10]. Additional cascaded second-order nonlinearities in LiNbO$_3$ lead to comb generation with four octaves of simultaneous coverage (0.350 to 5.6 $μ$m). With a comb-tooth linewidth of 10 kHz at 193 THz, we realize a notable spectral resolving power exceeding 10$^{10}$ across 0.86 PHz of bandwidth. We anticipate that this compact and accessible technology will open new opportunities for multi-band precision spectroscopy, coherent microscopy, ultra-high sensitivity nanoscopy, astronomical spectroscopy, and precision carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable strong field phenomena.
We report on the observation of puzzling nonuniform, but ordered, frequency combs in erbium-doped fiber lasers at low temperatures, between 3 K and 14 K. At ~14 K the combs disappear. The combs contain ~240 lines and have nonuniform frequency spacings that starts from ~25 GHz at ~1540.5 nm and decreases, almost monotonically, to ~100 MHz within (1.8-2) nm. We discuss possibilities that they result from enlarged regular mode-comb spacings, from prime numbers-based solitary waves free of four-wave mixing or result from gain gratings. However, we think that the combs originate from multi-lasing l…
We demonstrate a frequency comb spanning an octave via the parametric process of cascaded four-wave mixing in a monolithic, high-Q silicon nitride microring resonator. The comb is generated from a single-frequency pump laser at 1562 nm and spans 128 THz with a spacing of 226 GHz, which can be tuned slightly with the pump power. In addition, we investigate the RF-noise characteristics of the parametric comb and find that the comb can operate in a low-noise state with a 30-dB reduction in noise as the pump frequency is tuned into the cavity resonance.
We report a comprehensive study of low-power, octave-bandwidth, single-soliton microresonator frequency combs in both the 1550 nm and 1064 nm bands. Our experiments utilize fully integrated silicon-nitride Kerr microresonators, and we demonstrate direct soliton generation with widely available distributed-Bragg-reflector lasers that provide less than 40 mW of chip-coupled laser power. We report measurements of soliton thermal dynamics and demonstrate how rapid laser-frequency control, consistent with the thermal timescale of a microresonator, facilitates stabilization of octave-bandwidth solit…
A generalized Lugiato-Lefever equation is numerically solved with a Newton-Raphson method to model Kerr frequency combs. We obtain excellent agreement with past experiments, even for an octave-spanning comb. Simulations are much faster than with any other technique despite including more modes than ever before. Our study reveals that Kerr combs are associated with temporal cavity solitons and dispersive waves, and opens up new avenues for the understanding of Kerr comb formation.
We demonstrated the observation of Rb two-photon absorption directly excided by an optical frequency comb at fiber communication bands. A chain of comb spectral control is elaborately implemented to increase the power of the second harmonic optical frequency comb generation and the two-photon transition strength. A two-photon transition spectrum is obtained with clearly resolved transition lines. It provides a potential approach to realize the optical frequency comb or optical clock at ~1.5μm with high stability and accuracy.
We demonstrate an octave-spanning frequency comb with a spectrum covering wavelengths from 1,540 nm up to 3,200 nm. The supercontinuum is generated by pumping a 1-cm long dispersion engineered silicon wire waveguide by 70 fs pulses with an energy of merely 15 pJ. We confirm the phase coherence of the output spectrum by beating the supercontinuum with narrow bandwidth CW lasers. We show that the experimental results are in agreement with numerical simulations.
Octave-spanning, self-referenced frequency combs are applied in diverse fields ranging from precision metrology to astrophysical spectrometer calibration. In the past decade, Kerr frequency comb generators have emerged as alternative scheme offering chip-scale integration, high repetition rate and bandwidths that are only limited by group velocity dispersion. The recent observation of Kerr frequency combs operating in the dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) regime, along with dispersive wave formation, has provided the means for fully coherent, broadband Kerr frequency comb generation with engineer…
We numerically study, by means of the single envelope equation, the generation of optical frequency combs ranging from the visible to the mid-infrared spectral regions in resonators with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. Phase-matched quadratic wave-mixing processes among the comb lines can be activated by low-power continuous wave pumping in the near infrared of a radially poled lithium niobate whispering gallery resonator (WGR). We examine both separate and co-existing intra-cavity doubly resonant second-harmonic generation and parametric oscillation processes, and find that modulation ins…
Broadband Kerr combs with a flat comb spectral profile are expected in a number of applications, such as high-capacity optical communication. Here, we propose novel concentric dual-ring microresonators (DRMs) for advanced dispersion engineering to tailor the comb spectral profile. The dispersion can be flexibly engineered not only by the cross-section of the DRMs, but also by the gap between concentric dual-ring microresonators, which provides a new path to geometrically control the spectral profile of the soliton Kerr combs. An octave-spanning dissipative Kerr soliton comb with superior spect…
We demonstrate an optical frequency comb based on an erbium-doped-fiber femtosecond laser with the nonlinear polarization evolution scheme. The repetition rate of the laser is about 209 MHz. By controlling an intra-cavity electro-optic modulator and a piezo-transducer, the repetition rate can be stabilized with high servo bandwidth in a range of 3 kHz, enabling long-term repetition rate phase-locking. The in-loop frequency stability of repetition rate is about 1.6E-13 at 1 second integration time, limited by the measurement system; and it is inversely proportional to integration time in short …
Optical frequency combs have revolutionized the field of frequency metrology within the last decade and have become enabling tools for atomic clocks, gas sensing and astrophysical spectrometer calibration. The rapidly increasing number of applications has heightened interest in more compact comb generators. Optical microresonator based comb generators bear promise in this regard. Critical to their future use as 'frequency markers', is however the absolute frequency stabilization of the optical comb spectrum. A powerful technique for this stabilization is self-referencing, which requires a spec…
We demonstrate mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum generation (SCG) with instantaneous bandwidth from 2.2 to 5 μm at 40 dB below the peak, covering the wavelength range desirable for molecular spectroscopy and numerous other applications. The SCG occurs in a tapered As2S3 fiber prepared by in-situ tapering and is pumped by femtosecond pulses from the subharmonic of a mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser. Interference with a narrow linewidth c.w. laser verifies that the coherence properties of the near-IR frequency comb have been preserved through these cascaded nonlinear processes. With this appr…
Frequency combs spanning over an octave have been successfully demonstrated in Kerr nonlinear microresonators on-chip. These micro-combs rely on both engineered dispersion, to enable generation of frequency components across the octave, and on engineered coupling, to efficiently extract the generated light into an access waveguide while maintaining a close to critically-coupled pump. The latter is challenging as the spatial overlap between the access waveguide and the ring modes decays with frequency. This leads to strong coupling variation across the octave, with poor extraction at short wave…
Quantum cascade lasers are proving to be instrumental in the development of compact frequency comb sources at mid-infrared and terahertz frequencies. Here we demonstrate a heterogeneous terahertz quantum cascade laser with two active regions spaced exactly by one octave. Both active regions are based on a four-quantum well laser design and they emit a combined 3~mW peak power at 15~K in pulsed mode. The two central frequencies are 2.3~THz (bandwidth 300~GHz) and 4.6~THz (bandwidth 270~GHz). The structure is engineered in a way that allows simultaneous operation of the two active regions in the…
Optical fiber tapers are used to collect photoluminescence emission at ~1.5 um from photonic crystal cavities fabricated in erbium doped silicon nitride on silicon. Photoluminescence collection via fiber taper is enhanced 2.5 times relative to free space, with a total taper collection efficiency of 53%. By varying the fiber taper offset from the cavity, a broad tuning range of coupling strength is obtained. This material system combined with fiber taper collection is promising for building on-chip optical amplifiers.
We show experimentally and theoretically that the spectral components of a multi-octave frequency comb spontaneously created by stimulated Raman scattering in a hydrogen-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber exhibit strong self coherence and mutual coherence within each 12 ns driving laser pulse. This coherence arises in spite of the field's initiation being from quantum zero-point fluctuations, which causes each spectral component to show large phase and energy fluctuations. This points to the possibility of an optical frequency comb with nonclassical correlations between all comb lines.
Microresonator frequency combs can be an enabling technology for optical frequency synthesis and timekeeping in low size, weight, and power architectures. Such systems require comb operation in low-noise, phase-coherent states such as solitons, with broad spectral bandwidths (e.g., octave-spanning) for self-referencing to detect the carrier-envelope offset frequency. However, stably accessing such states is complicated by thermo-optic dispersion. For example, in the Si3N4 platform, precisely dispersion-engineered structures can support broadband operation, but microsecond thermal time constant…
A tunable and switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a new type tunable comb filter is proposed and demonstrated. By adjusting the polarization controllers, dual-function operation of the channel spacing tunability and the wavelength switching (interleaving) can be readily achieved. Up to 29 stable lasing lines with 0.4 nm spacing and 14 lasing wavelengths with 0.8 nm spacing in 3 dB bandwidth were obtained at room temperature. In addition, the lasing output, including the number of the lasing lines, the lasing evenness and the lasing locations, can also be flexibly…
High-brightness sources of coherent and few-cycle-duration light waveforms with spectral coverage from the UV to the THz would offer unprecedented versatility and opportunities for a spectacular range of applications from bio-chemical sensing, to time-resolved and nonlinear spectroscopy, to attosecond light-wave electronics. Combinations of various sources with frequency conversion and supercontinuum generation can provide relatively large spectral coverage, but many applications require much broader spectral range and low-jitter synchronization for time-domain measurements. Here, we present a…
We present a laser frequency comb based upon a 250 MHz mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser that spans more than 300 terahertz of bandwidth, from 660 nm to 2000 nm. The system generates 1.2 nJ, 70 fs pulses at 1050 nm by amplifying the 1580 nm laser light in Er:fiber, followed by nonlinear broadening to 1050 nm and amplification in Yb:fiber. Extension of the frequency comb into the visible is achieved by supercontinuum generation from the 1050 nm light. Comb coherence is verified with cascaded f-2f interferometry and comparison to a frequency stabilized laser.
The perfect soliton crystal (PSC) was recently discovered as an extraordinary Kerr soliton state with regularly distributed soliton pulses and enhanced comb line power spaced by multiples of the cavity free spectral ranges (FSRs). The modulation of continuous-wave excitation in optical microresonators and the tunable repetition rate characteristic will significantly enhance and extend the application potential of soliton microcombs for self-referencing comb source, terahertz wave generation, and arbitrary waveform generation. However, the reported PSC spectrum is generally narrow. Here, we dem…
We present here a semiconductor injection laser operating in continuous wave with an emission covering more than one octave in frequency, and displaying homogeneous power distribution among the lasing modes. The gain medium is based on a heterogeneous quantum cascade structure operating in the THz range. Laser emission in continuous wave takes place from 1.64 THz to 3.35 THz with optical powers in the mW range and more than 80 modes above threshold. Free-running beatnote investigations on narrow waveguides with linewidths of 980 Hz limited by jitter indicate frequency comb operation on a spect…
Implementing optical-frequency combs with integrated photonics will enable wider use of precision timing signals. Here, we explore the generation of an octave-span, Kerr-microresonator frequency comb, using hybrid integration ofan InP distributed-feedback laser and a SiN photonic-integrated circuit. We demonstrate electrically pumped and fiber-packaged prototype systems, enabled by self-injection locking. This direct integration of a laser and a microresonatorcircuit without previously used intervening elements, like optical modulators and isolators, necessitates understand-ing self-injection-l…
Space-division multiplexing (SDM), whereby multiple spatial channels in multimode and multicore optical fibers are used to increase the total transmission capacity per fiber, is being investigated to avert a data capacity crunch and reduce the cost per transmitted bit. With the number of channels employed in SDM transmission experiments continuing to rise, there is a requirement for integrated SDM components that are scalable. Here, we demonstrate a cladding-pumped SDM erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) that consists of six uncoupled multimode erbium-doped cores. Each core supports three spat…
Coherent laser beams in the 3 to 20 μm region of the spectrum are most applicable for chemical sensing by addressing the strongest vibrational absorption resonances of the media. Broadband frequency combs in this spectral range are of special interest since they can be used as a powerful tool for molecular spectroscopy offering dramatic gains in speed, sensitivity, precision, and massive parallelism of data collection. Here we show that a frequency comb realized through subharmonic generation in an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on orientation-patterned gallium phosphide (OP-GaP) pu…
Self-referenced dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) based on optical microresonators offer prominent characteristics including miniaturization, low power consumption, broad spectral range and inherent coherence for various applications such as precision measurement, communications, microwave photonics, and astronomical spectrometer calibration. To date, octave-spanning DKSs with a free spectral range (FSR) of ~1 THz have been achieved only in ultrahigh-Q silicon nitride microresonators, with elaborate wavelength control required. Here we demonstrate an octave-spanning DKS in an aluminium nitride …
We proposed a narrow spectral bandwidth Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser Q-switched by a homemade saturable dynamic induced grating (SDIG) which is introduced via reforming the structure of a fiber saturable absorbers FSA with a piece of EDF and a fiber Bragg grating. The SDIG integrates both saturable absorption and spectral filtering effect simultaneously, which was confirmed through theoretical analysis and experimental results for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Further study verified that the spectral width of the Q-switched emissions is decided by the length of the SDIG and t…
Frequency microcombs, successors to mode-locked laser and fiber combs, enable miniature rulers of light for applications including precision metrology, molecular fingerprinting, and exoplanet discoveries. To enable the frequency ruling function, microcombs must be stabilized by locking their carrier-envelop offset frequency. So far, the microcomb stabilization remains compounded by the elaborate optics external to the chip, thus evading its scaling benefit. To address this challenge, here we demonstrate a nanophotonic chip solution based on aluminum nitride thin films, which simultaneously off…
Microcombs - optical frequency combs generated in microresonators - have advanced tremendously in the last decade, and are advantageous for applications in frequency metrology, navigation, spectroscopy, telecommunications, and microwave photonics. Crucially, microcombs offer the prospect of fully integrated miniaturized optical systems with unprecedented reductions in cost, size, weight, and power. However, this goal has been consistently hindered by the use of bulk free-space and fiber-optic components to process microcombs, limiting form factors to the table-top. Here, we address this challe…
In supercontinuum generation, various propa- gation effects combine to produce a dramatic spec- tral broadening of intense ultrashort optical pulses with far reaching possibilities. Different applications place highly divergent and challenging demands on source characteristics such as spectral coverage from the ultraviolet (UV) across the visible (VIS) to the near-infrared (NIR), and into the mid-infrared (MIR). Shot-to-shot repeatability, high spectral energy density, an absence of complicated or non-deterministic pulse splitting are also essential for many applications. Here we present an "a…
We describe a coherent mid-infrared continuum source with 700 cm-1 usable bandwidth, readily tuned within 600 - 2500 cm-1 (4 - 17 \mum) and thus covering much of the infrared "fingerprint" molecular vibration region. It is based on nonlinear frequency conversion in GaSe using a compact commercial 100-fs-pulsed Er fiber laser system providing two amplified near-infrared beams, one of them broadened by a nonlinear optical fiber. The resulting collimated mid-infrared continuum beam of 1 mW quasi-cw power represents a coherent infrared frequency comb with zero carrier-envelope phase, containing ab…
Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), regarded as an important candidate platform for optical integration due to its excellent nonlinear, electro-optic and other physical properties, has become a research hotspot. In this paper, we reported the realization of 1550-nm band on-chip LNOI microlasers based on erbium-doped LNOI ring cavities with loaded quality factors higher than one million, which were fabricated by using electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching processes…
We use two femtosecond Erbium-doped fiber lasers with slightly different repetition rates to perform a modern type of Fourier transform spectroscopy without moving parts. The measurements are done in real time, and it takes less than 50 microseconds. We work with somewhat different spectral outputs from two Erbium-doped fiber lasers and employ spectral filtering based on a 2f-2f grating setup to select the common spectral region of interest, thereby increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. The interferogram is taken with a 20 cm long gas cell, containing a mixture of acetylene and air at atmosphe…
A high-performance S-band single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring cavity laser based on a depressed cladding EDF is investigated and experimentally demonstrated. We combine a double-ring passive resonator (DR-PR) and a length of unpumped polarization maintaining (PM) EDF in the laser cavity to achieve the SLM lasing without mode hopping. The DR-PR, composed of two efficient dual-coupler fiber rings, is utilized to expand the free spectral range of the EDF ring cavity laser and to eliminate the dense longitudinal modes greatly. The PM EDF, insusceptible to random change ind…
For erbium-doped amorphous oxides, such as those that are used in compact lightwave devices interfaced with silicon, values of the refractive indices are commonly obtained empirically. This work, combining experimental and theoretical studies, examines silica as the exemplary host and the influence of erbium doping on the refractive index. Analysis of data is presented for the spectral refractive index in the ultraviolet to near infrared wavelength range of heavily erbium-doped silica thin films prepared by spin coating a sol-gel precursor on silicon and subsequent vacuum annealing. We report new limits on the phase coherence of the ultrafast mode-locking process in an octave-spanning Ti:sapphire comb. We find that the mode-locking mechanism correlates optical phase across a full optical octave with less than 2.5 micro Hz relative linewidth. This result is at least two orders of magnitude below recent predictions for quantum-limited individual comb-mode linewidths, verifying that the mode-locking mechanism strongly correlates quantum noise across the comb spectrum.
Upconversion of infrared photons is a promising possibility to enhance solar cell efficiency by producing electricity from otherwise unused sub-band-gap photons. We present a rate equation model, and the relevant processes, in order to describe upconversion of near-infrared photons. The model considers stimulated and spontaneous processes, multi-phonon relaxation and energy transfer between neighboring ions. The input parameters for the model are experimentally determined for the material system β-NaEr0.2Y0.8F4. The determination of the transition probabilities, also known as the Einstein coef…
The influence of low temperatures on the performance of a high-power single-frequency fiber laser amplifier is evaluated with a numerical simulation. Cooling the fiber can allow to take advantage of both higher damping of the acoustic waves in the silica glass, and higher laser efficiency. We first report on the measurement of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold in a silica fiber as a function of the temperature from 300~K down to 77~K. We then present the measurements of small-signal absorption and gain spectra of an erbium doped alumino-phosphosilicate fiber, at room temperat…

It is demonstrated that Kerr frequency comb generation described by coupled mode equations can be numerically simulated using Fast Fourier Transform methods. This allows broadband frequency combs spanning a full octave to be efficiently simulated using standard algorithms, resulting in orders of magnitude improvements in the computation time.
