Self-referenced dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) based on optical microresonators offer prominent characteristics including miniaturization, low power consumption, broad spectral range and inherent coherence for various applications such as precision measurement, communications, microwave photonics, and astronomical spectrometer calibration. To date, octave-spanning DKSs with a free spectral range (FSR) of ~1 THz have been achieved only in ultrahigh-Q silicon nitride microresonators, with elaborate wavelength control required. Here we demonstrate an octave-spanning DKS in an aluminium nitride (AlN) microresonator with moderate loaded Q (500,000) and FSR of 374 GHz. In the design, a TE00 mode and a TE10 mode are nearly degenerate and act as pump and auxiliary modes. The presence of the auxiliary resonance balances the thermal dragging effect in dissipative soliton comb formation, crucially simplifying the DKS generation with a single pump and leading to a wide single soliton access window. We experimentally demonstrate stable DKS operation with a record single soliton step (~80 pm) and octave-spanning bandwidth (1100-2300 nm) through adiabatic pump tuning and on-chip power of 340 mW. Our scheme also allows for direct creation of the DKS state with high probability and without elaborate wavelength or power schemes being required to stabilize the soliton behavior.
Development of low-loss photonic components in the ultraviolet (UV) band will open new prospects for classical and quantum optics. Compared with other integrated platforms, aluminum nitride (AlN) is particularly attractive as it features an enormous bandgap of ~6.2 eV and intrinsic chi(2) and chi(3) susceptibilities. In this work, we demonstrate a record quality factor of 2.1 x 105 (optical loss ~ 8 dB/cm) at 390 nm based on single-crystalline AlN microrings. The low-loss AlN UV waveguide represents a significant milestone toward UV photonic integrated circuits as it features full compatibilit…
On-chip ultraviolet to infrared (UV-IR) spectrum frequency metrology is of crucial importance as a characterization tool for fundamental studies on quantum physics, chemistry, and biology. Due to the strong material dispersion, traditional techniques fail to demonstrate the device that can be applied to generate coherent broadband spectrum that covers the full UV-IR wavelengths. In this work, we explore several novel techniques for supercontinuum generation covering near-UV to near-IR spectrum using AlN micro-photonic waveguides, which is essential for frequency metrology applications: First, …
On-chip frequency comb generations enable compact broadband sources for spectroscopic sensing and precision spectroscopy. Recent microcomb studies focus on infrared spectral regime and have difficulty in accessing visible regime. Here, we demonstrate comb-like visible frequency line generation through second, third harmonic, and sum frequency conversion of a Kerr comb within a high Q aluminum nitride microring resonator pumped by a single telecom laser. The strong power enhancement, in conjunction with the unique combination of Pockels and Kerr optical nonlinearity of aluminum nitride, leads t…
The perfect soliton crystal (PSC) was recently discovered as an extraordinary Kerr soliton state with regularly distributed soliton pulses and enhanced comb line power spaced by multiples of the cavity free spectral ranges (FSRs). The modulation of continuous-wave excitation in optical microresonators and the tunable repetition rate characteristic will significantly enhance and extend the application potential of soliton microcombs for self-referencing comb source, terahertz wave generation, and arbitrary waveform generation. However, the reported PSC spectrum is generally narrow. Here, we dem…
We numerically study the mechanisms of frequency comb generation in the mid-infrared spectral region from cw pumped silicon microring resonators. Coherent soliton comb generation may be obtained even for a pump with zero linear cavity detuning, through suitable control of the effective lifetime of free-carriers from multiphoton absorption, which introduces a nonlinear cavity detuning via free-carrier dispersion. Conditions for optimal octave spanning Raman comb generation are also described.
We demonstrate a frequency comb spanning an octave via the parametric process of cascaded four-wave mixing in a monolithic, high-Q silicon nitride microring resonator. The comb is generated from a single-frequency pump laser at 1562 nm and spans 128 THz with a spacing of 226 GHz, which can be tuned slightly with the pump power. In addition, we investigate the RF-noise characteristics of the parametric comb and find that the comb can operate in a low-noise state with a 30-dB reduction in noise as the pump frequency is tuned into the cavity resonance.
Silicon carbide has recently emerged as a promising photonics material due to its unique properties, including possessing strong second- and third-order nonlinear coefficients and hosting various color centers that can be utilized for a wealth of quantum applications. Here, we report the design and demonstration of octave-spanning microcombs in a 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator platform for the first time. Such broadband operation is enabled by optimized nanofabrication achieving >1 million intrinsic quality factors in a 36-$μ$m-radius microring resonator, and careful dispersion engineering by…
Aluminum nitride (AlN) has been widely used in microeletromechanical resonators for its excellent electromechanical properties. Here we demonstrate the use of AlN as an optomechanical material that simultaneously offer low optical and mechanical loss. Integrated AlN microring resonators in the shape of suspended rings exhibit high optical quality factor (Q) with loaded Q up to 125,000. Optomechanical transduction of the Brownian motion of a GHz contour mode yields a displacement sensitivity of 6.2\times10^(-18)m/Hz^(1/2) in ambient air.
Optical frequency combs consist of equally spaced discrete optical frequency components and are essential tools for optical communications and for precision metrology, timing and spectroscopy. To date, wide-spanning combs are most often generated by mode-locked lasers or dispersion-engineered resonators with third-order Kerr nonlinearity. An alternative comb generation method uses electro-optic (EO) phase modulation in a resonator with strong second-order nonlinearity, resulting in combs with excellent stability and controllability. Previous EO combs, however, have been limited to narrow width…
Development of chip-scale optical frequency comb with the coverage from ultra-violet (UV) to mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength is of great significance. To expand the comb spectrum into the challenging UV region, a material platform with high UV transparency is crucial. In this paper, crystalline aluminum nitride (AlN)-onsapphire film is demonstrated for efficient Kerr frequency comb generation. Near-infrared (NIR) comb with nearly octave-spanning coverage and low parametric threshold is achieved in continuous-wave pumped high-quality-factor AlN microring resonators. The competition between stimul…
We report the first investigation on continuous-wave Raman lasing in high-quality-factor aluminum nitride (AlN) microring resonators. Although wurtzite AlN is known to exhibit six Raman-active phonons, single-mode Raman lasing with low threshold and high slope efficiency is demonstrated. Selective excitation of A$_1^\mathrm{TO}$ and E$_2^\mathrm{high}$ phonons with Raman shifts of $\sim$612 and 660 cm$^{-1}$ is observed by adjusting the polarization of the pump light. A theoretical analysis of Raman scattering efficiency within ${c}$-plane (0001) of AlN is carried out to help account for the o…
A shaped doublet pump pulse is proposed for simultaneous octave-spanning soliton Kerr frequency comb generation and second-harmonic conversion in a single microresonator. The temporal soliton in the cavity is trapped atop a doublet pulse pedestal, resulting in a greatly expanded soliton region compared to that with a general Gaussian pulse pump. The possibility of single-microresonator comb self-referencing in a single silicon nitride microring, which can facilitate compact on-chip optical clocks, is demonstrated via simulation.
Broad bandwidth and stable microresonator frequency combs are critical for accurate and precise optical frequency measurements in a compact and deployable format. Typically, broad bandwidths (e.g., octave spans) are achieved by tailoring the microresonator's geometric dispersion. However, geometric dispersion engineering alone may be insufficient for sustaining bandwidths well beyond an octave. Here, we introduce the novel concept of synthetic dispersion, in which a second pump laser effectively alters the dispersion landscape to create Kerr soliton microcombs that extend far beyond the anomal…
We demonstrate a photonic RF Hilbert transformer for broadband microwave in-phase and quadrature-phase generation based on an integrated frequency optical comb, generated using a nonlinear microring resonator based on a CMOS compatible, high-index contrast, doped-silica glass platform. The high quality and large frequency spacing of the comb enables filters with up to 20 taps, allowing us to demonstrate a quadrature filter with more than a 5-octave (3 dB) bandwidth and an almost uniform phase response.
Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKS) in optical microresonators provide a highly miniaturized, chip-scale frequency comb source with unprecedentedly high repetition rates and spectral bandwidth. Yet the range of applications could be significantly extended by operating in the near-infrared spectral domain, a prerequisite for biomedical and Raman imaging applications, and a…
Optical frequency combs enable state-of-the-art applications including frequency metrology, optical clocks, astronomical measurements, and sensing. Recent demonstrations of microresonator-based Kerr frequency combs or microcombs pave the way to scalable and stable comb sources on a photonic chip. Generating microcombs in the visible wavelength range, however, has been limited by large material dispersion and optical loss. Here we demonstrate a scheme for efficiently generating visible microcomb in a high Q aluminum nitride microring resonator. Enhanced Pockels effect strongly couples infrared …
