We consider $q$-ary (linear and nonlinear) block codes with exactly two distances: $d$ and $d+δ$. Several combinatorial constructions of optimal such codes are given. In the linear (but not necessary projective) case, we prove that under certain conditions the existence of such linear $2$-weight code with $δ> 1$ implies the following equality of great common divisors: $(d,q) = (δ,q)$. Upper bounds for the maximum cardinality of such codes are derived by linear programming and from few-distance spherical codes. Tables of lower and upper bounds for small $q = 2,3,4$ and $q\,n < 50$ are presented.
In this article we present a class of codes with few weights arising from special type of linear sets. We explicitly show the weights of such codes, their weight enumerator and possible choices for their generator matrices. In particular, our construction yields also to linear codes with three weights and, in some cases, to almost MDS codes. The interest for these codes relies on their applications to authentication codes and secret schemes, and their connections with further objects such as association schemes and graphs.
We study sequences of linear or affine codes with uniform weight spectrum, i.e., a part of codewords with any fixed weight tends to zero. It is proved that a sequence of linear codes has a uniform weight spectrum if the number of vectors from codes with weight $1$ grows to infinity. We find an example of a sequence of linear codes such that the dimension of the code is the half of the codelength but it has not a uniform weight spectrum. This example generates eigenfunctions of the Fourier transform with minimal support and partial covering sets. Moreover, we generalize some MacWilliams-type id…
Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are linear codes that intersect with their dual codes trivially. We study the largest minimum weight $d_2(n,k)$ among all binary LCD $[n,k]$ codes and the largest minimum weight $d_3(n,k)$ among all ternary LCD $[n,k]$ codes. The largest minimum weights $d_2(n,5)$ and $d_3(n,4)$ are partially determined. We also determine the largest minimum weights $d_2(n,n-5)$, $d_3(n,n-i)$ for $i \in \{2,3,4\}$, and $d_3(n,k)$ for $n \in \{11,12,\ldots,19\}$.
In this paper we investigate the number of minimum weight codewords of some dual Algebraic-Geometric codes associated with the Giulietti-Korchmáros maximal curve, by computing the maximal number of intersections between the Giulietti-Korchmáros curve and lines, plane conics and plane cubics.
Note on the residue codes of self-dual $\mathbb{Z}_4$-codes having large minimum Lee weights
We give restrictions on the weight enumerators of ternary near-extremal self-dual codes of length divisible by $12$ and quaternary near-extremal Hermitian self-dual codes of length divisible by $6$. We consider the weight enumerators for which there is a ternary near-extremal self-dual code of length $12m$ for $m =3,4,5,6$. Also we consider the weight enumerators for which there is a quaternary near-extremal Hermitian self-dual code of length $6m$ for $m =4,5,6$.
We provide a combinatorial construction for linear codes attaining the maximum possible number of distinct weights. We then introduce the related problem of determining the existence of linear codes with an arbitrary number of distinct non-zero weights, and we completely determine a solution in the binary case.
A linear $ [n,k]_q $ code $ C $ is said to be a full weight spectrum (FWS) code if there exist codewords of each nonzero weight less than or equal to $ n $. In this brief communication we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of linear $ [n,k]_q $ full weight spectrum (FWS) codes. Central to our approach is the geometric view of linear codes, whereby columns of a generator matrix correspond to points in $ PG(k-1,q) $.
Let $\mathcal{C}\subseteq \mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n$ be an $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear non-degenerate rank metric code with dimension $k$. In this paper we investigate the problem of determining the number $M(\mathcal{C})$ of codewords in $\mathcal{C}$ with maximum weight, that is $\min\{m,n\}$, and to characterize those with the maximum and the minimum values of $M(\mathcal{C})$.
Minimal codes are a class of linear codes which gained interest in the last years, thanks to their connections to secret sharing schemes. In this paper we provide the weight distribution and the parameters of families of minimal codes recently introduced by C. Tang, Y. Qiu, Q. Liao, Z. Zhou, answering some open questions.
In this note, we construct new doubly even self-dual codes having minimum weight $20$ for lengths $112$, $120$ and $128$. This implies that there are at least three inequivalent extremal doubly even self-dual codes of length $112$.
We consider the notion of a $(q,m)$-polymatroid, due to Shiromoto, and the more general notion of $(q,m)$-demi-polymatroid, and show how generalized weights can be defined for them. Further, we establish a duality for these weights analogous to Wei duality for generalized Hamming weights of linear codes. The corresponding results of Ravagnani for Delsarte rank metric codes, and Martinez-Penas and Matsumoto for relative generalized rank weights are derived as a consequence.
Linear codes with few weights have applications in secret sharing, authentication codes, association schemes and strongly regular graphs. In this paper, several classes of two-weight and three-weight linear codes are presented and their weight distributions are determined using Weil sums. Some of the linear codes obtained are optimal or almost optimal with respect to the Griesmer bound.
In this work we develop a geometric approach to the study of rank metric codes. Using this method, we introduce a simpler definition for generalized rank weight of linear codes. We give a complete classification of constant rank weight code and we give their generalized rank weights.
In this paper, we investigate the symbol-pair weight distributions of MDS codes and simplex codes over finite fields. Furthermore, the result shows that all the nonzero codewords of simplex codes have the same symbol $b$-weight and rearrangement entries of codewords in simplex code may induce different symbol-pair weight. In addition, the symbol $b$-weight distributions of variation simplex codes over certain finite fields are derived.
In this paper, based on the theory of defining sets, two classes of five-weight or six-weight linear codes over Fp are constructed. The weight distributions of the linear codes are determined by means of Weil sums and a new type of exponential sums. In some case, there is an almost optimal code with respect to Griesmer bound, which is also an optimal one according to the online code table.
In the past few years, linear codes with few weights and their weight analysis have been widely studied. In this paper, we further investigate a class of two-weight or three-weight linear codes from defining sets and determine their weight and complete weight enumerators by application of the theory of quadratic forms and some special Weil sums over finite fields. Some punctured codes of the discussed linear codes are optimal or almost optimal with respect to the Griesmer bound. This paper generalizes some results in \cite{ZhuXu2017,Jian2019}.
In this paper, based on the theory of defining sets, a class of four-weight or five-weight linear codes over Fp is constructed. The complete weight enumerators of the linear codes are determined by means of Weil sums. In some case, there is an almost optimal code with respect to Griesmer bound, which is also an optimal one according to the online code table. This is an extension of the results raised by Zhang et al.(2020).
In this paper, we first introduce the notion of generalized pair weights of an $[n, k]$-linear code over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and the notion of pair $r$-equiweight codes, where $1\le r\le k-1$. Some basic properties of generalized pair weights of linear codes over finite fields are derived. Then we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for an $[n,k]$-linear code to be a pair equiweight code, and we characterize pair $r$-equiweight codes for any $1\le r\le k-1$. Finally, a necessary and sufficient condition for a linear isomorphism preserving pair weights between two linear cod…
We introduce the concept of spread of a code, and we specialize it to the case of maximum weight spectrum (MWS) codes. We classify two newly-defined sub-families of MWS codes according to their weight distributions, and completely describe their fundamental parameters. We focus on one of these families, the strictly compact MWS codes, proving their optimality as MWS codes and linking them to known codes.
Generalized pair weights of linear codes are generalizations of minimum symbol-pair weights, which were introduced by Liu and Pan \cite{LP} recently. Generalized pair weights can be used to characterize the ability of protecting information in the symbol-pair read wire-tap channels of type II. In this paper, we introduce the notion of generalized $b$-symbol weights of linear codes over finite fields, which is a generalization of generalized Hamming weights and generalized pair weights. We obtain some basic properties and bounds of generalized $b$-symbol weights which are called Singleton-like …
The weight of a coset of a code is the smallest Hamming weight of any vector in the coset. For a linear code of length $n$, we call integral weight spectrum the overall numbers of weight $w$ vectors, $0\le w\le n$, in all the cosets of a fixed weight. For maximum distance separable (MDS) codes, we obtained new convenient formulas of integral weight spectra of cosets of weight 1 and 2. Also, we give the spectra for the weight 3 cosets of MDS codes with minimum distance $5$ and covering radius $3$.
We construct a class of linear codes by choosing a proper defining set and determine their complete weight enumerators and weight enumerators. The results show that they are at most three-weight codes and they are suitable for applications in secret sharing schemes. We give an extension of the results raised by Wang et al.(2017).
The determination of the weight distribution of linear codes has been a fascinating problem since the very beginning of coding theory. There has been a lot of research on weight enumerators of special cases, such as self-dual codes and codes with small Singleton's defect. We propose a new set of linear relations that must be satisfied by the coefficients of the weight distribution. From these relations we are able to derive known identities (in an easier way) for interesting cases, such as extremal codes, Hermitian codes, MDS and NMDS codes. Moreover, we are able to present for the first time …
We present a framework for minimizing costs in constant weight codes while maintaining a certain amount of differentiable codewords. Our calculations are based on a combinatorial view of constant weight codes and relay on simple approximations.
In 1997 Rosenthal and York defined generalized Hamming weights for convolutional codes, by regarding a convolutional code as an infinite dimensional linear code endowed with the Hamming metric. In this paper, we propose a new definition of generalized weights of convolutional codes, that takes into account the underlying module structure of the code. We derive the basic properties of our generalized weights and discuss the relation with the previous definition. We establish upper bounds on the weight hierarchy of MDS and MDP codes and show that that, depending on the code parameters, some or a…
