Generalized pair weights of linear codes are generalizations of minimum symbol-pair weights, which were introduced by Liu and Pan \cite{LP} recently. Generalized pair weights can be used to characterize the ability of protecting information in the symbol-pair read wire-tap channels of type II. In this paper, we introduce the notion of generalized $b$-symbol weights of linear codes over finite fields, which is a generalization of generalized Hamming weights and generalized pair weights. We obtain some basic properties and bounds of generalized $b$-symbol weights which are called Singleton-like bounds for generalized $b$-symbol weights. As examples, we calculate generalized weight matrices for simplex codes and Hamming codes. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a linear code to be a $b$-symbol MDS code by using the generator matrix and the parity check matrix of this linear code. Finally, a necessary and sufficient condition of a linear isomorphism preserving $b$-symbol weights between two linear codes is obtained. As a corollary, we get the classical MacWilliams extension theorem when $b=1$.
Symbol-pair codes are block codes with symbol-pair metrics designed to protect against pair-errors that may occur in high-density data storage systems. MDS symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that it can attain the highest pair-error correctability within the same code length and code size. Constructing MDS symbol-pair codes is one of the main topics in symbol-pair codes. In this paper, we characterize the symbol-pair distances of some constacyclic codes of arbitrary lengths over finite fields and a class of finite chain rings. Using the characterization of symbol-pair distance, we pres…

In this paper, two new classes of MDS symbol-pair codes are proposed utilizing repeated-root cyclic codes over finite fields with odd characteristic. Precisely, these codes poss minimum symbol-pair distance ten or twelve, which is bigger than all the known MDS symbol-pa…
Symbol-pair codes are proposed to guard against pair-errors in symbol-pair read channels. The minimum symbol-pair distance plays a vital role in determining the error-correcting capability and the constructions of symbol-pair codes with largest possible minimum symbol-pair distance is of great importance. Maximum distance separable (\,MDS\,) symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that such codes can acheive the Singleton bound. In this paper, for length $5p$, two new classes of MDS symbol-pair codes with minimum symbol-pair distance seven or eight are constructed by utilizing repeated-root…
Symbol-pair codes introduced by Cassuto and Blaum in 2010 are designed to protect against the pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. One of the central themes in symbol-error correction is the construction of maximal distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes that possess the largest possible pair-error correcting performance. Based on repeated-root cyclic codes, we construct two classes of MDS symbol-pair codes for more general generator polynomials and also give a new class of almost MDS (AMDS) symbol-pair codes with the length $lp$. In addition, we derive all MDS and AMDS symbol-pair cod…
Motivated by the application of high-density data storage technologies, symbol-pair codes are proposed to protect against pair-errors in symbol-pair channels, whose outputs are overlapping pairs of symbols. The research of symbol-pair codes with the largest minimum pair-distance is interesting since such codes have the best possible error-correcting capability. A symbol-pair code attaining the maximal minimum pair-distance is called a maximum distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair code. In this paper, we focus on constructing linear MDS symbol-pair codes over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. W…
The symbol-pair code is a new coding framework proposed to guard against pair-errors in symbol-pair read channels. Especially, a symbol-pair code with the parameters achieving the Singleton-type bound is called an MDS symbol-pair code. In this paper, inspiring by the classical construction for Reed-Solomon codes, for any $3\le k<m\le q-2$ and $m_1=\Big\lfloor{\tiny\frac{m}{\lfloor\frac{k-1}{2}\rfloor}}\Big\rfloor$, we construct a class of $q$-ary MDS symbol-pair codes with dimension $k$ and length $n$ $(n=m+m_1, m+m_1-1)$, where $q$ is a prime power. Furthermore, for $k\in\{3,4\}$, the symbol-…

Recently, Yaakobi et al. introduced codes for $b$-symbol read channels, where the read operation is performed as a consecutive sequence of $b>2$ symbols. In this paper, we establish a Singleton-type bound on $b$-symbol codes. Codes meeting the Singleton-type bound are called maximum distance separable (MDS) codes, and they are optimal in the sense they attain the maximal minimum $b$-distance. Based on projective geometry and constacyclic codes, we construct new families of linear MDS $b$-symbol codes over finite fields. And in some sense, we completely determine the existence of linear MDS $b$…
For a positive integer $b\ge2$, the $b$-symbol code is a new coding framework proposed to combat $b$-errors in $b$-symbol read channels. Especially, the $2$-symbol code is called a symbol-pair code. Remarkably, a classical maximum distance separable (MDS) code is also an MDS $b$-symbol code. Recently, for any MDS code $\mathcal{C}$, Ma and Luo determined the symbol-pair weight distribution of $\mathcal{C}$. In this paper, by calculating the number of solutions for some equations and utilizing some shortened codes of $\mathcal{C}$, we give the connection between the $b$-weight distribution and …
Symbol-pair code is a new coding framework which is proposed to correct errors in the symbol-pair read channel. In particular, maximum distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes are a kind of symbol-pair codes with the best possible error-correction capability. Employing cyclic and constacyclic codes, we construct three new classes of MDS symbol-pair codes with minimum pair-distance five or six. Moreover, we find a necessary and sufficient condition which ensures a class of cyclic codes to be MDS symbol-pair codes. This condition is related to certain property of a special kind of linear fract…
The weight of a coset of a code is the smallest Hamming weight of any vector in the coset. For a linear code of length $n$, we call integral weight spectrum the overall numbers of weight $w$ vectors, $0\le w\le n$, in all the cosets of a fixed weight. For maximum distance separable (MDS) codes, we obtained new convenient formulas of integral weight spectra of cosets of weight 1 and 2. Also, we give the spectra for the weight 3 cosets of MDS codes with minimum distance $5$ and covering radius $3$.
Symbol-pair codes introduced by Cassuto and Blaum (2010) are designed to protect against pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. The higher the minimum pair distance, the more pair errors the code can correct. MDS symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that pair distance cannot be improved for given length and code size. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First we present three lower bounds for the minimum pair distance of constacyclic codes, the first two of which generalize the previously known results due to Cassuto and Blaum (2011) and Kai {\it et al.} (2015). The third one e…
The weight distribution of the cosets of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes is considered. In 1990, P.G. Bonneau proposed a relation to obtain the full weight distribution of a coset of an MDS code with minimum distance $d$ using the known numbers of vectors of weights $\le d-2$ in this coset. In this paper, the Bonneau formula is transformed into a more structured and convenient form. The new version of the formula allows to consider effectively cosets of distinct weights $W$. (The weight $W$ of a coset is the smallest Hamming weight of any vector in the coset.) For each of the considered…
A maximum distance separable (MDS) array code is composed of $m\times (k+r)$ arrays such that any $k$ out of $k+r$ columns suffice to retrieve all the information symbols. Expanded-Blaum-Roth (EBR) codes and Expanded-Independent-Parity (EIP) codes are two classes of MDS array codes that can repair any one symbol in a column by locally accessing some other symbols within the column, where the number of symbols $m$ in a column is a prime number. By generalizing the constructions of EBR and EIP codes, we propose new MDS array codes, such that any one symbol can be locally recovered and the number…
We consider $(n,k,l)$ MDS codes of length $n$, dimension $k$, and subpacketization $l$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$. A codeword of such a code consists of $n$ column-vectors of length $l$ over $\mathbb{F}$, with the property that any $k$ of them suffice to recover the entire codeword. Each of these $n$ vectors may be stored on a separate node in a network. If one of the $n$ nodes fails, we can recover its content by downloading symbols from the surviving nodes, and the total number of symbols downloaded in the worst case is called the repair bandwidth of the code. By the cut-set bound, the…
In this paper, we investigate the symbol-pair weight distributions of MDS codes and simplex codes over finite fields. Furthermore, the result shows that all the nonzero codewords of simplex codes have the same symbol $b$-weight and rearrangement entries of codewords in simplex code may induce different symbol-pair weight. In addition, the symbol $b$-weight distributions of variation simplex codes over certain finite fields are derived.
Generalized Expanded-Blaum-Roth (GEBR) codes [1] are designed for large-scale distributed storage systems that have larger recoverability for single-symbol failures, multi-column failures and multi-row failures, compared with locally recoverable codes (LRC). GEBR codes encode an $α\times k$ information array into a $pτ\times (k+r)$ array such that lines of slope $i$ with $0\leq i\leq r-1$ have even parity and each column contains $pτ-α$ local parity symbols, where $p$ is an odd prime and $k+r\leq pτ$. Necessary and sufficient conditions for GEBR codes to be $(n,k)$ recoverable (i.e., any $k$ o…
In this paper, we propose two novel modulation concepts based on a simple maximum distance separable (MDS) code { and show that these concepts can achieve better error performance than index modulation (IM) and related schemes.} In the first concept, we use amplitude and phase levels to form a simple MDS code, whereas, in the second one, in-phase and quadrature components of codeword elements are used to construct the MDS code. We depict practical schemes for using the proposed concepts with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). We analyze the performance in terms of the minimum E…
Streaming codes represent a packet-level FEC scheme for achieving reliable, low-latency communication. In the literature on streaming codes, the commonly-assumed Gilbert-Elliott channel model, is replaced by a more tractable, delay-constrained, sliding-window (DCSW) channel model that can introduce either random or burst erasures. The known streaming codes that are rate optimal over the DCSW channel model are constructed by diagonally embedding a scalar block code across successive packets. These code constructions have field size that is quadratic in the delay parameter $τ$ and have a somewha…
We present the construction of a family of erasure correcting codes for distributed storage that achieve low repair bandwidth and complexity at the expense of a lower fault tolerance. The construction is based on two classes of codes, where the primary goal of the first class of codes is to provide fault tolerance, while the second class aims at reducing the repair bandwidth and repair complexity. The repair procedure is a two- step procedure where parts of the failed node are repaired in the first step using the first code. The downloaded symbols during the first step are cached in the memory…
Belief propagation or message passing on binary erasure channels (BEC) is a low complexity decoding algorithm that allows the recovery of message symbols based on bipartite graph prunning process. Recently, array XOR codes have attracted attention for storage systems due to their burst error recovery performance and easy arithmetic based on Exclusive OR (XOR)-only logic operations. Array BP-XOR codes are a subclass of array XOR codes that can be decoded using BP under BEC. Requiring the capability of BP-decodability in addition to Maximum Distance Separability (MDS) constraint on the code cons…
In this paper, we study the weight spectrum of linear codes with \emph{super-linear} field size and use the probabilistic method to show that for nearly all such codes, the corresponding weight spectrum is very close to that of a maximum distance separable (MDS) code.
The symbol-pair codes over finite fields have been raised for symbol-pair read channels and motivated by application of high-density data storage technologies [1, 2]. Their generalization is the code for b-symbol read channels (b > 2). Many MDS codes for b-symbol read channels have been constructed which meet the Singleton-like bound ([3, 4, 10] for b = 2 and [11] for b > 2). In this paper we show the Plotkin-like bound and present a construction on irreducible cyclic codes and constacyclic codes meeting the Plotkin-like bound.
A linear code with parameters $[n,k,n-k]$ is said to be almost maximum distance separable (AMDS for short). An AMDS code whose dual is also AMDS is referred to as an near maximum distance separable (NMDS for short) code. NMDS codes have nice applications in finite geometry, combinatorics, cryptography and data storage. In this paper, we first present several constructions of NMDS codes and determine their weight enumerators. In particular, some constructions produce NMDS codes with the same parameters but different weight enumerators. Then we determine the locality of the NMDS codes and obtain…
In this paper, we establish the Singleton bound for pomset block codes ($(Pm,π)$-codes) of length $N$ over the ring $\mathbb{Z}_m$. We give a necessary condition for a code to be MDS in the pomset (block) metric and prove that every MDS $(Pm,π)$-code is an MDS $(P,π)$-code. Then we proceed on to find $I$-perfect and $r$-perfect codes. Further, given an ideal with partial and full counts, we look into how MDS and $I$-perfect codes relate to one another. For chain pomset, we obtain the duality theorem for pomset block codes of length $N$ over $\mathbb{Z}_m$; and, the weight distribution of MDS p…
An $(n,k)$ maximum distance separable (MDS) code has optimal repair access if the minimum number of symbols accessed from $d$ surviving nodes is achieved, where $k+1\le d\le n-1$. Existing results show that the sub-packetization $α$ of an $(n,k,d)$ high code rate (i.e., $k/n>0.5$) MDS code with optimal repair access is at least $(d-k+1)^{\lceil\frac{n}{d-k+1}\rceil}$. In this paper, we propose a class of multi-layer transformed MDS codes such that the sub-packetization is $(d-k+1)^{\lceil\frac{n}{(d-k+1)η}\rceil}$, where $η=\lfloor\frac{n-k-1}{d-k}\rfloor$, and the repair access is optimal for…
We propose a private information retrieval (PIR) protocol for distributed storage systems with noncolluding nodes where data is stored using an arbitrary linear code. An expression for the PIR rate, i.e., the ratio of the amount of retrieved data per unit of downloaded data, is derived, and a necessary and a sufficient condition for codes to achieve the maximum distance separable (MDS) PIR capacity are given. The necessary condition is based on the generalized Hamming weights of the storage code, while the sufficient condition is based on code automorphisms. We show that cyclic codes and Reed-…

The minimum symbol-pair distance is of significance in determining the error-correcting capability of a symbol-pair code. One of the central themes in symbol-pair coding theory is the constructions of symbol-pair codes with largest possible minimum pair distance. Maximum distance separable (MDS) and almost maximum distance separable (AMDS) symbol-pair codes are optimal and sub-optimal regarding to the Singleton bound, respectively. In this paper, six new classes of AMDS symbol-pair codes are explicitly co…
We consider non-binary product codes with MDS components and their iterative row-column algebraic decoding on the erasure channel. Both independent and block erasures are considered in this paper. A compact graph representation is introduced on which we define double-diversity edge colorings via the rootcheck concept. An upper bound of the number of decoding iterations is given as a function of the graph size and the color palette size $M$. Stopping sets are defined in the context of MDS components and a relationship is established with the graph representation. A full characterization of thes…
Piggybacking codes are a special class of MDS array codes that can achieve small repair bandwidth with small sub-packetization by first creating some instances of an $(n,k)$ MDS code, such as a Reed-Solomon (RS) code, and then designing the piggyback function. In this paper, we propose a new piggybacking coding design which designs the piggyback function over some instances of both $(n,k)$ MDS code and $(n,k')$ MDS code, when $k\geq k'$. We show that our new piggybacking design can significantly reduce the repair bandwidth for single-node failures. When $k=k'$, we design piggybacking code that…
In ``Infinite families of near MDS codes holding $t$-designs, IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 2020, 66(9), pp. 5419-5428'', Ding and Tang made a breakthrough in constructing the first two infinite families of NMDS codes holding $2$-designs or $3$-designs. Up to now, there are only a few known infinite families of NMDS codes holding $t$-designs in the literature. The objective of this paper is to construct new infinite families of NMDS codes holding $t$-designs. We determine the weight enumerators of the NMDS codes and prove that the NMDS codes hold $2$-designs or $3$-designs. Compared with known $…
In 1997 Rosenthal and York defined generalized Hamming weights for convolutional codes, by regarding a convolutional code as an infinite dimensional linear code endowed with the Hamming metric. In this paper, we propose a new definition of generalized weights of convolutional codes, that takes into account the underlying module structure of the code. We derive the basic properties of our generalized weights and discuss the relation with the previous definition. We establish upper bounds on the weight hierarchy of MDS and MDP codes and show that that, depending on the code parameters, some or a…
The Shamir secret sharing scheme requires a Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) code, and in its most common implementation, a Reed-Solomon (RS) code is used. In this paper, we observe that the encoding procedure can be made simpler and faster by dropping the MDS condition and specifying the possible symbols that can be shared. In particular, the process can be made even faster by using array codes based on XOR operations instead of RS codes.
In this paper, we introduce a new family of metrics, weighted poset block metric, that combine the weighted coordinates poset metric introduced by Panek et al. [(\ref{panek})] and the metric for linear error-block codes introduced by Feng et al. [(\ref{FENG})]. This type of metrics include many classical metrics such as Hamming metric, Lee metric, poset metric, pomset metric, poset block metric, pomset block metric and so on. We give a complete description of the groups of linear isometries of these metric spaces in terms of a semi-direct product. Furthermore, we obtain a Singleton type bound …
