Let $p$ be a sufficiently large prime number, $r$ be any given positive integer. Suppose that $a_1,\,\dots,\,a_r$ are pairwise distinct and not zero modulo $p$. Let $N(a_1,\,\dots,\,a_r;\,p)$ denote the number of $α_1,\,\dots,\,α_r,\,β$, which are primitive roots modulo $p$, such that $α_1+β\equiv a_1,\,\dots,\,α_r+β\equiv a_r\,({\rm mod}\,p).$ In the first version of this paper, we proved an asymptotic formula for $N(a_1,\,\dots,\,a_r;\,p)$ so that we could answer an open problem of Wenpeng Zhang and Tingting Wang. But we found that our result had been included in a paper of L. Carlitz in 1956, which is explained in the additional remark below.
Question 10208b (1992) of the American Mathematical Monthly asked: does there exist an increasing sequence $\{a_k\}$ of positive integers and a constant $B > 0$ having the property that $\{ a_k + n\}$ contains no more than $B$ primes for every integer $n$? A positive answer to this question became known as Golomb's conjecture. In this note we give a negative answer, making use of recent progress in prime number theory.
In this article, we prove a generalization of a theorem (Ogg's conjecture) due to Bary Mazur for arbitrary $N\in \N$ and for {\it number fields}. The main new observation is a modification of a theorem due to Glenn Stevens for the congruence subgroups of the form $\Ga_0(N)$ for any $N \in \N$. This in turn help us to determine the relevant part of the cuspidal subgroups without dependence on Shimura subgroups.
For a fixed integer $n\geq 2,$ we show that a permutation of the least residues mod $p$ of the form $f(x)=Ax^k$ mod $p$ cannot map a residue class mod $n$ to just one residue class mod $n$ once $p$ is sufficiently large, other than the maps $f(x)=\pm x$ mod $p$ when $n$ is even and $f(x)=\pm x$ or $\pm x^{(p+1)/2}$ mod $p$ when $n$ is odd.
Irreducible symplectic varieties are higher-dimensional analogues of K3 surfaces. In this paper, we prove the Shafarevich conjecture for irreducible symplectic varieties of fixed deformation class. We also observe that the second cohomological generalization of the Shafarevich conjecture does not hold in general, and discuss another formulation of a cohomological generalization.
Given two integers $k\geq 2$ and $a>1$, let $N_k(a)$ stand for the number of multinomial coefficients, with $k$ terms, equal to $a$. We study the behavior of $N_k(a)$ and show that its average and normal orders are equal to $k(k-1)$. We also prove that $N_k(a)=O\left((\log a/\log\log a)^{k-1}\right)$ and make several propositions about extreme results regarding large values of $N_k(a)$.
The van der Waerden's Conjecture states that the set $\mathscr{P}_{n,N}^0(\mathbb{Q})$ of monic integer polynomials $f(X)$ of degree $n$, with height $\le N$ such that the Galois group $G_{K_f/\mathbb{Q}}$ of the splitting field $K_f/\mathbb{Q}$ is the full symmetric group, has order $|\mathscr{P}_{n,N}^0(\mathbb{Q})|=(2N)^n+O_n(N^{n-1})$ as $N\rightarrow+\infty$. The conjecture has been shown previously for cubic and quartics polynomials by van der Waerden, Chow and Dietmann. Subsequently, Bhargava proved it for $n\ge6$. In this paper, we generalize the result for polynomials with coefficient…
In this paper, we investigate sums of four squares of integers whose prime factorizations are restricted, making progress towards a conjecture of Sun that states that two of the integers may be restricted to the forms $2^a3^b$ and $2^c5^d$. We obtain an ineffective generalization of results of Gauss and Legendre on sums of three squares and an effective generalization of Lagrange's four-square theorem.
Suppose that $f(x)=Ax^k$ mod $p$ is a permutation of the least residues mod $p$. With the exception of the maps $f(x)=Ax$ and $Ax^{(p+1)/2}$ mod $p$ we show that for fixed $n\geq 2$ the image of each residue class mod $n$ contains elements from every residue classe mod $n$, once $p$ is sufficiently large. If $f(x)=Ax$ mod $p$, then for each $p$ and $n$ there will be exactly $(1+o(1))\frac{6}{π^2}n^2$ readily describable values of $A$ for which the image of some residue class mod $n$ misses at least one residue class mod $n,$ even when $p$ is large relative to $n$. A similar situation holds for…
Here we follow on the proposed generalization of Maeda's conjecture made in [2]. We report on computations that suggest a relation between the number of local types and the number of non-CM newform Galois orbits. We extend the conjecture into spaces with non-trivial Nebentypus and provide a formula for the number of non-CM orbits for all levels and trivial Nebentypus. We also provide some numerical evidence towards further generalizations of this conjecture to totally real fields as well as further strengthening of it by proposing a structure for the corresponding Galois groups.
In this paper, we define a generalization of the Brauer groups by using Bloch's cycle complex on etale site. We prove the Gersten conjecture of generalized Brauer group on some cases. As an application we prove the Gersten conjecture of the logarithmic Hodge-Witt cohomology for a two dimensional regular local ring which is smooth over a spectrum of some discrete valuation ring of characteristic $p>0$. Moreover we consider a generalization of Artin's theorem on Brauer groups.
Some class of sums which naturally include the sums of powers of integers is considered. A number of conjectures concerning a representation of these sums is made.
The Oort conjecture (now a theorem of Obus-Wewers and Pop) states that if k is an algebraically closed field of characteristic p, then any cyclic branched cover of smooth projective k-curves lifts to characteristic zero. This is equivalent to the local Oort conjecture, which states that all cyclic extensions of k[[t]] lift to characteristic zero. We generalize the local Oort conjecture to the case of Galois extensions with cyclic p-Sylow subgroups, reduce the conjecture to a pure characteristic p statement, and prove it in several cases. In particular, we show that D_9 is a so-called local Oor…
We formulate a generalization of Vojta's conjecture in terms of log pairs and variants of multiplier ideals. In this generalization, a variety is allowed to have singularities. It turns out that the generalized conjecture for a log pair is equivalent to the original conjecture applied to a log resolution of the pair. A special case of the generalized conjecture can be interpreted as representing a general phenomenon that there tend to exist more rational points near singular points than near smooth points. The same phenomenon is also observed in relation between greatest common divisors of int…
The Shafarevich conjecture for K3 surfaces asserts the finiteness of isomorphism classes of K3 surfaces over a fixed number field admitting good reduction away from a fixed finite set of finite places. André proved this conjecture for polarized K3 surfaces of fixed degree, and recently She proved it for polarized K3 surfaces of unspecified degree. In this paper, we prove a certain generalization of their results, which is stated by the unramifiedness of l-adic étale cohomology groups for K3 surfaces over finitely generated fields of characteristic 0. As a corollary, we get the original Shafare…
A set of integers greater than 1 is primitive if no element divides another. Erdős proved in 1935 that the sum of $1/(n \log n)$ for $n$ running over a primitive set $A$ is universally bounded over all choices for $A$. In 1988 he asked if this universal bound is attained by the set of prime numbers. We answer the Erdős question in the affirmative for 2-primitive sets. Here a set is 2-primitive if no element divides the product of 2 other elements.
Let $Δ_d^{(a,-)}(n) = q_d^{(a)}(n) - Q_d^{(a,-)}(n)$ where $q_d^{(a)}(n)$ counts the number of partitions of $n$ into parts with difference at least $d$ and size at least $a$, and $Q_d^{(a,-)}(n)$ counts the number of partitions into parts $\equiv \pm a \pmod{d + 3}$ excluding the $d+3-a$ part. Motivated by generalizing a conjecture of Kang and Park, Duncan, Khunger, Swisher, and the second author conjectured that $Δ_d^{(3,-)}(n)\geq 0$ for all $d\geq 1$ and $n\geq 1$ and were able to prove this when $d \geq 31$ is divisible by $3$. They were also able to conjecture an analog for higher values…
Integer partitions have long been of interest to number theorists, perhaps most notably Ramanujan, and are related to many areas of mathematics including combinatorics, modular forms, representation theory, analysis, and mathematical physics. Here, we focus on partitions with gap conditions and partitions with parts coming from fixed residue classes. Let $Δ_d^{(a,b)}(n) = q_d^{(a)}(n) - Q_d^{(b)}(n)$ where $q_d^{(a)}(n)$ counts the number of partitions of $n$ into parts with difference at least $d$ and size at least $a$, and $Q_d^{(b)}(n)$ counts the number of partitions into parts $\equiv \pm…
In 2014, Pila and Tsimerman gave a proof of the Ax-Schanuel conjecture for the $j$-function and, with Mok, have recently announced a proof of its generalization to any (pure) Shimura variety. We refer to this generalization as the hyperbolic Ax-Schanuel conjecture. In this article, we show that the hyperbolic Ax-Schanuel conjecture can be used to reduce the Zilber-Pink conjecture for Shimura varieties to a problem of point counting. We further show that this point counting problem can be tackled in a number of cases using the Pila-Wilkie counting theorem and several arithmetic conjectures. Our…
