Let K be a finitely generated field over Q, and A an abelian variety over K. Let <, > : A(K^a) x A(K^a) --> R be an arithmetic height pairing on A, where K^a is the algebric closure of K. For x_1,..., x_l \in A(K^a), we denote det(<x_i, x_j>) by d(x_1,..., x_l). Let G be a subgroup of finite rank in A(K^a), and X a subvariety of A_{K^a}. Fix a basis {g_1,..., g_n} of G_Q. In this note, we prove a generalization of Poonen's theorem:
If the set {x \in X(K^a) | d(g_1,..., g_n, x) <= e} is Zariski dense in X for every positive number e, then X is a translation of an abelian subvariety by an element of G_{div}.
We formulate a conjecture for semiabelian varieties A over number fields that includes both the Mordell-Lang conjecture (now proven) and the Bogomolov conjecture. We prove the "Mordellic" (finitely generated) part of the conjecture when A is isogenous to the product of an abelian variety and a torus. The proof makes use of the Mordell-Lang conjecture, the Bogomolov conjecture, and an equidistribution theorem.
In "Mordell-Lang plus Bogomolov", we formulated a conjecture combining the Mordell-Lang conjecture (now proven) and the Bogomolov conjecture, and proved the Mordellic part when A is almost split (i.e., isogenous to the product of an abelian variety and a torus). Here we prove that the full conjecture would follow from the Bogomolov conjecture and an equidistribution result for general semiabelian varieties. These assumptions have been proved when A is almost split, so the conjecture is completely proven in that case.
In this paper, we propose a new height function for a variety defined over a finitely generated field over Q. For this height function, we will prove Northcott's theorem and Bogomolov's conjecture, so that we can recover the original Raynaud's theorem (Manin-Mumford's conjecture).
In our previous paper, we established Northcott's theorem for height functions over finitely generated fields. Unfortunately, Northcott's theorem on finitely generated fields does not hold in general. Actually, it depends on the choice of a polarization. In this short note, we will propose a weaker condition of the polarization to guarantee Northcott's theorem. We will also show the generalization of conjectures of Bogomolov and Lang in under the weaker condition.
We propose a formulation of the relative Bogomolov conjecture and show that it gives an affirmative answer to a question of Mazur's concerning the uniformity of the Mordell-Lang conjecture for curves. In particular we show that the relative Bogomolov conjecture implies the uniform Manin-Mumford conjecture for curves. The proof is built up on our previous work "Uniformity in Mordell-Lang for curves".
We prove that if $f$ is a polynomial over a number field $K$ with a finite superattracting periodic point and a non-archimedean place of bad reduction, then there is an $ε>0$ such that only finitely many $P\in K^{\text{ab}}$ have canonical height less than $ε$ with respect to $f$. The key ingredient is the geometry of the filled Julia set at a place of bad reduction. We also prove a conditional uniform boundedness result for the $K$-rational preperiodic points of such polynomials, as well as a uniform lower bound on the canonical height of non-preperiodic points in $K$. We further prove uncond…
We finish the proof of the conjecture of F. Bogomolov and F. Pop: Let $F_{1}$ and $F_{2}$ be fields finitely-generated and of transcendence degree $\geq 2$ over $k_{1}$ and $k_{2}$, respectively, where $k_{1}$ is either $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ or $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_{p}$, and $k_{2}$ is algebraically closed. We denote by $G_{F_1}$ and $G_{F_2}$ their respective absolute Galois groups. Then the canonical map $φ_{F_{1}, F_{2}}: \Isom^i(F_1, F_2)\rightarrow \Isom^{\Out}_{\cont}(G_{F_2}, G_{F_1})$ from the isomorphisms, up to Frobenius twists, of the inseparable closures of $F_1$ and $F_2$ to continuous …

We study the Selmer varieties of smooth projective curves of genus at least two defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which geometrically dominate a curve with CM Jacobian. We extend a result of Coates and Kim to show that Kim's non-abelian Chabauty method applies to such a curve. By combining this with results of Bogomolov-Tschinkel and Poonen on unramified correspondences, we deduce that any cover of $\mathbf{P}^1$ with solvable Galois group, and in particular any superelliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, has only finitely many rational points over $\mathbb{Q}$.
We determine the structure of the intersection of a finitely generated subgroup of a semiabelian variety $G$ defined over a finite field with a closed subvariety $X\subset G$.
The strong Bombieri-Lang conjecture postulates that, for every variety $X$ of general type over a field $k$ finitely generated over $\mathbb{Q}$, there exists an open subset $U\subset X$ such that $U(K)$ is finite for every finitely generated extension $K/k$. The weak Bombieri-Lang conjecture postulates that, for every positive dimensional variety $X$ of general type over a field $k$ finitely generated over $\mathbb{Q}$, the rational points $X(k)$ are not dense. Furthermore, Lang conjectured that every variety of general type $X$ over a field of characteristic $0$ contains an open subset $U\su…
Let C be an algebraic curve in a power of an elliptic curve, both defined over the algebraic numbers. We show that the set of algebraic points of C which satisfy certain conditions is a finite set. This result has implications with the Pink-Zilber Conjeture and the Mordel-Lang plus Bogomolov Theorem for curves.
We give a new proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic for finitely generated subgroups. We also make some progress towards the full Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic.
Let V be an algebraic variety embedded in a power of an elliptic curve, both defined over the algebraic numbers. We show that the set of algebraic points of V which are of bounded height and which satisfy certain algebraic conditions are a non-dense subset of V. This result has implications in the context of the Pink-Zilber Conjecture and Mordel-Lang plus Bogomolov Theorem.
In this paper, we introduce an algebro-geometric formulation for Siegel's theorem using an improvement of Lang's version of Roth's theorem over finitely generated fields of characteristic zero. In fact, we prove that, for an affine open curve in an irreducible smooth curve of genus at least one, any finitely generated subgroup of the additive group of the affine ambient space intersects the open curve in only finitely many points. This was proved only for finitely generated subgroups defined over a localization of the ring of integers of a number field by Mahler and others.
The Mordell-Lang conjecture describes the intersection of a finitely generated subgroup with a closed subvariety of a semiabelian variety. Equivalently, this conjecture describes the intersection of closed subvarieties with the set of images of the origin under a finitely generated semigroup of translations. We study the analogous question in which the translations are replaced by algebraic group endomorphisms (and the origin is replaced by another point). We show that the conclusion of the Mordell-Lang conjecture remains true in this setting if either (1) the semiabelian variety is simple, (2…
We show that if the automorphism group of a projective variety is torsion, then it is finite. Motivated by Lang's conjecture on rational points of hyperbolic varieties, we use this to prove that a projective variety with only finitely many rational points has only finitely many automorphisms. Moreover, we investigate to what extent finiteness of $S$-integral points on a variety over a number field persists over finitely generated fields. To this end, we introduce the class of mildly bounded varieties and prove a general criterion for proving this persistence.
Assume that the section conjecture holds over number fields. We prove then that it holds for a broad class of curves defined over finitely generated extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. This class contains every projective, hyperelliptic curve, every hyperbolic, affine curve of genus $\le 2$, and a non-empty open subset of any curve. If we furthermore assume the weak Bombieri-Lang conjecture, we prove that the section conjecture holds for every hyperbolic curve over every finitely generated extension of $\mathbb{Q}$.
The generalized Mordell-Lang conjecture (GML) is the statement that the irreducible components of the Zariski closure of a subset of a group of finite rank inside a semi-abelian variety are translates of closed algebraic subgroups. M. McQuillan gave a proof of this statement. We revisit his proof, indicating some simplifications. This text contains a complete elementary proof of the fact that (GML) for groups of torsion points (= generalized Manin-Mumford conjecture), together with (GML) for finitely generated groups imply the full generalized Mordell-Lang conjecture.
We prove that various arithmetic quotients of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$ are Mordellic, in the sense that they have only finitely many rational points over any finitely generated field extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. In the previously known case of compact hyperbolic complex surfaces, we give a new proof using their Albanese in conjunction with some key results of Faltings, but without appealing to the Shafarevich conjecture. In higher dimension, our methods allow us to solve an alternative of Ullmo and Yafaev. Our strongest result uses in addition Rogawski's theory and establishes the Mordell…
We prove that there is a first-order sentence in the language of rings that is true for all finitely generated fields of characteristic 0 and false for all fields of characteristic >0. We also prove that for each n in N, there is a first-order formula psi_n(x_1,...,x_n) that when interpreted in a finitely generated field K is true for elements x_1,...,x_n in K if and only if the elements are algebraically dependent over the prime field in K.
Let $f:X\rightarrow X$ be a quasi-finite endomorphism of an algebraic variety $X$ defined over a number field $K$ and fix an initial point $a\in X$. We consider a special case of the dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture, where the subvariety $V$ contains only finitely many periodic points and does not contain any positive-dimensional periodic subvariety. We show that the set $\{n\in \mathbb{N}~|~f^n(a) \in V \}$ satisfies a strong gap principle.
Let K be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic p, let N be a positive integer, let f be a self-map on the algebraic torus T=G_m^N defined over K, let V be a curve in T defined over K, and let x be a K-point of T. We show that the set S consisting of all positive integers n for which f^n(x) is contained in V is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions, along with a finite set and with finitely many p-arithmetic sequences, which are sets of the form {b + ap^{kn}: n is a positive integer} where a and b are given rational numbers and k is a positive integer. We also prove t…
We prove that in positive characteristic, the Manin-Mumford conjecture implies the Mordell-Lang conjecture, in the situation where the ambient variety is an abelian variety defined over the function field of a smooth curve over a finite field and the relevant group is a finitely generated group. In particular, in the setting of the last sentence, we provide a proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture, which does not depend on tools coming from model theory.
In this paper we show how some known weak forms of the Zilber--Pink conjecture can be strengthened by combining them with the Mordell--Lang conjecture or its variants. We illustrate this idea by proving some theorems on atypical intersections in the semiabelian and modular settings. Given a "finitely generated" set $Γ$ with a certain structure, we consider $Γ$-special subvarieties -- weakly special subvarieties containing a point of $Γ$ -- and show that every variety $V$ contains only finitely many maximal $Γ$-atypical subvarieties, i.e. atypical intersections of $V$ with $Γ$-special varieties…
Let K be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic p, let X be a semiabelian variety defined over a finite subfield of K, let f be a regular self-map on X defined over K, let V be a subvariety of X defined over K, and let x be a K-point of X. The Dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture in characteristic p predicts that the set S consisting of all positive integers n for which f^n(x) lies on V is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions, along with finitely many p-sets, which are sets consisting of all integers of the form c_1 p^{k_1 n_1} + ... + c_m p^{k_m n_m} (as we vary n_1,..…
We continue to develop the analytic Langlands program for curves over local fields initiated in arXiv:1908.09677, arXiv:2103.01509 following a suggestion of Langlands and a work of Teschner. Namely, we study the Hecke operators introduced in arXiv:2103.01509 in the case of P^1 over a local field with parabolic structures at finitely many points for the group PGL(2). We establish most of the conjectures of arXiv:1908.09677, arXiv:2103.01509 in this case.
Let $K$ be a finitely generated field of characteristic zero. We study, for fixed $m \geq 2$, the rational functions $ϕ$ defined over $K$ that have a $K$-orbit containing infinitely many distinct $m$th powers. For $m \geq 5$ we show the only such functions are those of the form $cx^j(ψ(x))^m$ with $ψ\in K(x)$, and for $m \leq 4$ we show the only additional cases are certain Lattès maps and four families of rational functions whose special properties appear not to have been studied before. With additional analysis, we show that the index set $\{n \geq 0 : ϕ^{n}(a) \in λ(\mathbb{P}^1(K))\}$ is a…
Let $Λ<SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ be a finitely generated, non-elementary Fuchsian group of the second kind, and $v, w$ be two primitive vectors in $\mathbb{Z}^2-(0,0)$. We consider the set $\mathcal{S}=\{\langle {v}γ,{w}\rangle_{\mathbb{R}^2}:γ\inΛ\}$, where $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle_{\mathbb{R}^2}$ is the standard inner product in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Using Hardy-Littlewood circle method and some infinite co-volume lattice point counting techniques developed by Bourgain, Kontorovich and Sarnak, together with Gamburd's 5/6 spectral gap, we show that if $Λ$ has parabolic elements, and the critical exponent…
