We construct analytic (3+1)-dimensional Skyrmions living at finite Baryon density in the SU(N) Skyrme model that are not trivial embeddings of SU(2) into SU(N). We used Euler angles decomposition for arbitrary N and the generalized hedgehog Ansatz at finite Baryon density. The Skyrmions of high topological charge that we find represent smooth Baryonic layers whose properties can be computed explicitly. In particular, we determine the energy to Baryon charge ratio for any N showing the smoothness of the large N limit. The closeness to the BPS bound of these configurations can also be analyzed. The energy density profiles of these finite density Skyrmions have \textit{lasagna-like} shape in agreement with recent experimental findings. The shear modulus can be precisely estimated as well and our analytical result is close to recent numerical studies in the literature.
We describe a new exact relation for large $N_c$ QCD for the long-distance behavior of baryon form factors in the chiral limit. This model-independent relation is used to test the consistency of the structure of several baryon models. All 4D semiclassical chiral soliton models satisfy the relation, as does the Pomarol-Wulzer holographic model of baryons as 5D Skyrmions. However, remarkably, we find that the holographic model treating baryons as instantons in the Sakai-Sugimoto model does not satisfy the relation.
The Skyrme crystal is built up of repeating units similar to the cubic Skyrmion of baryon number 4. Using this as guide, we construct new Skyrmion solutions in the massive pion case, with various baryon numbers up to 108. Most of our solutions resemble chunks of the Skyrme crystal. They are constructed using a multi-layer version of the rational map ansatz to create initial configurations, which are then relaxed numerically to find the energy minima. The coefficients of the rational maps are found by a geometrical construction related to the Skyrme crystal structure. We find some further solut…
In connection with the possibility of skyrmion production from small domain disoriented chiral condensates formation from heavy ion collisions, the direct relation of a classical skyrmion to baryon states is examined. It is argued that a skyrmion is a coherent state of baryons. The collective coordinate approach of quantization means that the physical baryon states exist not in flat space but on a compact manifold. This requires the construction of coherent states in such a curve space. Using the techniques associated with the Segal-Bargmann transform also known as the coherent state transform…
We provide analytical and numerical evidence of the existence of classically stable, string-like configurations in a 2+1 dimensional analog of the Skyrme model. The model contains a conserved topological charge usually called the baryon number. Our strings are non-topological solitons which have a constant baryon number per unit length. The energy per length containing one baryon is, however, less than the energy of an isolated baryon (radially symmetric ``baby Skyrmion") in a region of the parameter space, which suggests a degree of stability for our configurations. In a limiting case, our co…
We quantify the baryon anti-baryon production generated by a metastable cosmic string, similar to the embedded pion string. More precisely, we study skyrmion production mediated by instantons generated by a pion-like metastable string in contact with a thermal bath, and interpret these Skyrmions as baryons. As shown in a previous work, the core of such a metastable string can melt due to quantum tunneling in the charged field direction. The specific configuration of our string containing 4 scalar fields out of equilibrium in contact with a thermal bath is shown to yield skyrmion production wit…
In the large $N_c$ limit of QCD, baryons can be modeled as solitons, for instance, as Skyrmions. This modeling has been justified by Witten's demonstration that all properties of baryons and mesons scale with $N_c^{-1/2}$ in the same way as the analogous meson-based soliton model scales with a generic meson-meson coupling constant $g$. An alternative large $N_c$ limit (the orientifold large $N_c$ limit) has recently been proposed in which quarks transform in the two-index antisymmetric representation of $SU(N_c)$. By carrying out the analog of Witten's analysis for the new orientifold large $N…
The role of rescaling (expansion or squeezing) of quantized skyrmions is studied for the spectrum of baryons beginning with nucleon and $Δ(1232)$, and with flavors strangeness, charm or beauty. The expansion of skyrmions due to the centrifugal forces has influence on the masses of baryons without flavor ($N$ and especially $Δ$). The rescaling of skyrmions has smaller influence on the spectrum of strange baryons, it is more important for the case of charm, and is crucial for baryons with beauty quantum number, where strong squeezing takes place. Two competing tendencies are clearly observed: ex…
Exploiting the Hamilton quantization in the Skyrmion thoery, we investigate intrinsic frequencies of baryons such as nucleon and delta particles. We find that matter wave property of the baryons originates from these intrinsic vibrational modes defined on internal hypersphere.
Skyrmions are well known to be baryons because their topological charge has been positively identified with the baryon number. Beyond that their identity has never been clear. In view of the possibility of skyrmion production through Disoriented Chiral Condensates in heavy ion collisions, the exact identity of the skyrmion must be resolved before they can be identified in experiments. It is shown that skyrmions are not individual baryons but coherent states of known baryons and higher resonances on a compact manifold associated with the spin and flavor symmetry group. An outline of how to calc…
The baryon/skyrmion correspondence implies that the baryon number is encoded into a topological surface integral. Under certain conditions that we clarify, this surface integral can be measured by an asymptotic observer in form of an Aharonov-Bohm phase-shift in an experiment in which the skyrmion passes through a loop of a probe string. In such a setup the baryon/skyrmion number must be respected by black holes, despite the fact that it produces no long-range classical field. If initially swallowed by a black hole, the baryon number must resurface in form of a classical skyrmion hair, after t…
Based on the observation that the skyrmion in Skyrme theory can be viewed as a dressed monopole, we show that the skyrmions have two independent topology, the baryon topology $π_3(S^3)$ and the monopole topology $π_2(S^2)$. With this we propose to classify the skyrmions by two topological numbers $(m,n)$, the monopole number $m$ and the shell (radial) number $n$. In this scheme the popular (non spherically symmetric) skyrmions are classified as the $(m,1)$ skyrmions but the spherically symmetric skyrmions are classified as the $(1,n)$ skyrmions, and the baryon number $B$ is given by $B=mn$. Mo…
We investigate the large baryon number sector of the Einstein-Skyrme model as a possible model for baryon stars. Gravitating hedgehog skyrmions have been investigated previously and the existence of stable solitonic stars excluded due to energy considerations. However, in this paper we demonstrate that by generating gravitating skyrmions using rational maps, we can achieve multi-baryon bound states whilst recovering spherical symmetry in the limit where B becomes large.
We study the baryonic sector of QCD with quarks in the two index symmetric or antisymmetric representation. The minimal gauge invariant state that carries baryon number cannot be identified with the Skyrmion of the low energy chiral effective Lagrangian. Mass, statistics and baryon number do not match. We carefully investigate the properties of the minimal baryon in the large N limit and we find that it is unstable under formation of bound states with higher baryonic number. These states match exactly with the properties of the Skyrmion of the effective Lagrangian.
The Skyrme model is a non-linear field theory whose solitonic solutions, once quantised, describe atomic nuclei. The classical static soliton solutions, so-called Skyrmions, have interesting discrete symmetries and can only be calculated numerically. Mathematically, these Skyrmions can be viewed as maps between to two three-manifolds and, as such, their stable singularities can only be folds, cusps and swallowtails. Physically, the occurrence of singularities is related to negative baryon density. In this paper, we calculate the charge three Skyrmion to a high resolution in order to examine it…
Based on the intanton approximation of Skyrmion and recent progresses on the holographic approach, we study baryon properties using Skyrmions generated from holographic instantons. First we employ Atiyah and Manton's early observation to show that the instanton approximation gives the correct infrared behavior for the Skyrmion solution, and thus those of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon. We then use Skyrmions generated from flat-space instanton solutions to study various baryon properties, treating the instanton size as an arbitrary variable. It is found that, a large instanton …
We study various classical solutions of the baby-Skyrmion model in $(2+1)$ dimensions. We point out the existence of higher energy states interpret them as resonances of Skyrmions and anti-Skyrmions and study their decays. Most of the discussion involves a highly exited Skyrmion-like state with winding number one which decays into an ordinary Skyrmion and a Skyrmion-anti-Skyrmion pair. We also study wave-like solutions of the model and show that some of such solutions can be constructed from the solutions of the sine-Gordon equation. We also show that the baby-Skyrmion has non-topological stat…
In the Skyrme model, the Lagrangian can be quantized in several ways using the collective coordinate approach. Not all of which produce quantum states that can be interpreted as physical particles. For example the SU(2) collective coordinate approach produces both integral and half-integral spin and isospin states. Only half of these are the physical baryons. Less well known is the fact that it is equally possible to quantize the system using the SO(3) collective coordinates. This produces only unphysical integral spin and isospin states. To fulfill the goal of being able to express a classica…
We study baryons in holographic QCD with $D4/D8/\bar{D8}$ multi $D$ brane system. In holographic QCD, the baryon appears as a topologically non-trivial chiral soliton in a four-dimensional effective theory of mesons, which is called `Brane-induced Skyrmion'. We derive and calculate the Euler-Lagrange equation for the hedgehog configuration with chiral profile $F(r)$ and $ρ$-meson profile $\tilde G(r)$, and obtain the soliton solution of the holographic QCD.
We discuss the similarities between BPS monopoles and Skyrmions, and point to an underlying connection in terms of rational maps between Riemann spheres. This involves the introduction of a new ansatz for Skyrme fields. We use this to construct good approximations to several known Skyrmions, including all the minimal energy configurations up to baryon number nine, and some new solutions such as a baryon number seventeen Skyrme field with the truncated icosahedron structure of a buckyball. The new approach is also used to understand the low-lying vibrational modes of Skyrmions, which are requir…
We study baryonic matter in holographic QCD with D4/D8/\bar{D8} multi-D brane system in type IIA superstring theory. The baryon is described as the "brane-induced Skyrmion", which is a topologically non-trivial chiral soliton in the four-dimensional meson effective action induced by holographic QCD. We employ the "truncated-resonance model" approach for the baryon analysis, including pion and ρmeson fields below the ultraviolet cutoff scale M_KK \sim 1GeV, to keep the holographic duality with QCD. We describe the baryonic matter in large N_c as single brane-induced Skyrmion on the three-dimens…
We construct the first analytic self-gravitating Skyrmions with higher Baryon charge in four dimensions for the $SU(3)$-Skyrme-Einstein-$Λ$ theory by combining the generalized hedgehog ansatz with the approach developed by Balachandran et al. to describe the first (numerical) example of a non-embedded solution. These are genuine $SU(3)$ analytic solutions instead of trivial embeddings of $SU(2)$ into $SU(3)$ and its geometry is that of a Bianchi IX Universe. The Skyrme ansatz is chosen in such a way that the Skyrme field equations are identically satisfied in the sector with Baryon charge 4. T…
We study a Skyrme-type model with a quadratic potential for a field with $S^2$ vacua. We consider two flavors of the model, the first is the Skyrme model and the second has a sixth-order derivative term instead of the Skyrme term; both with the added quadratic potential. The model contains molecules of half Skyrmions, each of them is a global (anti-)monopole with baryon number 1/2. We numerically construct solutions with baryon numbers one through six, and find stable solutions which look like beads on rings. We also construct a molecule with fractional Skyrmions having the baryon numbers 1/3 …
We show that the existence of black holes with classical skyrmion hair invalidates standard proofs that global charges, such as the baryon number, cannot be conserved by a black hole. By carefully analyzing the standard arguments based on a Gedankenexperiment in which a black hole is seemingly-unable to return the baryon number that it swallowed, we identify inconsistencies in this reasoning, which does not take into the account neither the existence of skyrmion black holes nor the baryon/skyrmion correspondence. We then perform a refined Gedankenexperiment by incorporating the new knowledge a…
We study the baryon in holographic QCD with $D4/D8/\bar{D8}$ multi-$D$ brane system. In holographic QCD, the baryon appears as a topologically non-trivial chiral soliton in a four-dimensional effective theory of mesons. We call this topological soliton as Brane-induced Skyrmion. Some review of $D4/D8/\bar{D8}$ holographic QCD is presented from the viewpoints of recent hadron physics and phenomenologies. Four-dimensional effective theory with pions and $ρ$ mesons is uniquely derived from the non-abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action of $D8$ brane with $D4$ supergravity background, without smal…
We briefly review the generalized Skyrmion model for the baryon recently suggested by us. It takes into account the tower of vector and axial mesons as well as the chiral symmetry breaking. The generalized Skyrmion model provides the qualitative explanation of the Ioffe's formula for the baryon mass.
We continue the investigation of thermodynamical properties of the BPS Skyrme model. In particular, we analytically compute the baryon chemical potential both in the full field theory and in a mean-field approximation. In the full field theory case, we find that the baryon chemical potential is always exactly proportional to the baryon density, for arbitrary solutions. We further find that, in the mean-field approximation, the BPS Skyrme model approaches the Walecka model in the limit of high density - their thermodynamical functions as well as the equation of state agree in this limit. This f…
We study the vibrational modes of Skyrmions with baryon numbers one through eight in the standard Skyrme model. The vibrational modes are found in the harmonic approximation around the classical soliton solution and the real parts of the frequencies of the modes are extracted. We further classify the vibrational modes into representations of the symmetries possessed by the Skyrmion solutions. We find that there are approximately 7B low-lying modes for a Skyrmion with baryon number B, in addition to an infinite continuum of scattering modes. This result suggests that the instanton moduli space,…
The relatively small binding energy in nuclei suggests that they may be well represented by near-BPS Skyrmions since their mass is roughly proportional to the baryon number $A.$ For that purpose, we propose a generalization of the Skyrme model with terms up to order six in derivatives of the pion fields and treat the nonlinear $σ$ and Skyrme terms as small perturbations. For our special choice of mass term (or potential) $V$, we obtain well-behaved analytical BPS-type solutions with non-shell configurations for the baryon density, as opposed to the more complex shell-like configurations found …
We present numerical evidence that suggests the introduction of a non-zero pion mass might dramatically affect the structure of minimal energy Skyrmions. It appears that the shell-like Skyrmions which are the minima when the pions are massless can fail to be minimal energy bound states for particular baryon numbers, with a strong dependence upon the value of the pion mass. The effects of a pion mass may include the replacement of shell-like configurations with crystal chunks and the loss of shell-like bound states with baryon numbers five and eight; which is in agreement with expectations base…
In the Skyrme model with massless pions, the minimal energy multi-Skyrmions are shell-like, with the baryon density localized on the edges of a polyhedron that is approximately spherical and generically of the fullerene-type. In this paper we show that in the Skyrme model with massive pions these configurations are unstable for sufficiently large baryon number. Using numerical simulations of the full nonlinear field theory, we show that these structures collapse to form qualitatively different stable Skyrmion solutions. These new Skyrmions have a flat structure and display a clustering phenome…
Skyrmions with a realistic value of the pion mass parameter are expected to be quite compact structures, but beyond baryon number B=8 only a few examples are known. The largest of these is the cubically symmetric B=32 Skyrmion which is a truncated piece of the Skyrme crystal. Here it is proposed that many more such Skyrmions could be found, without any restriction on the baryon number, as pieces of the Skyrme crystal. Particular attention is given to the possibility of reducing B by 1 by chopping a corner off a cubic crystal chunk. Nuclei are modelled by Skyrmions with quantised spin and isosp…
In the lightly bound Skyrme model, several Skyrmions having particularly strong binding are clusters of unit baryon number Skyrmions arranged as truncated tetrahedra. Their baryon numbers form the sequence B = 4, 16, 40, 80, 140, 224. This is the standard sequence of tetrahedral numbers multiplied by four, and therefore agrees with the sequence of magic proton and neutron numbers 2, 8, 20, 40, 70, 112 that occurs in the nuclear shell model in the absence of strong spin-orbit coupling. This sequence includes several of the magic numbers that are predicted for tetrahedrally deformed nuclei, and …
In a simple holographic model for QCD in which the Chern-Simons term is incorporated to take into account the QCD chiral anomaly, we show that baryons arise as stable solitons which are the 5D analogs of 4D skyrmions. Contrary to 4D skyrmions and previously considered holographic scenarios, these solitons have sizes larger than the inverse cut-off of the model, and therefore they are predictable within our effective field theory approach. We perform a numerical determination of several static properties of the nucleons and find a satisfactory agreement with data. We also calculate the amplitud…
We propose a scenario that the Electroweak-Skyrmion, a solitonic object made of the Higgs field and the electroweak gauge fields, is identified as an asymmetric dark matter. In this scenario, the relic abundance of the dark matter is related to the baryon asymmetry of the Universe through a sphaleron-like process. We show that the observed ratio of dark matter abundance to the baryon asymmetry can be explained by this scenario with an appropriate choice of model parameters that is allowed by currently available experimental constraints.
We study baryons as Skyrmions in holographic QCD with D4/D8/D8-bar multi-D brane system in type IIA superstring theory, and also in the non-linear sigma model with hidden local symmetry (HLS). Comparing these two models, we find that the extra-dimension and its nontrivial curvature can largely change the role of (axial) vector mesons for baryons in four-dimensional space-time. In the HLS approach, the rho-meson field as a massive Yang-Mills field has a singular configuration in Skyrmion, which gives a strong repulsion for the baryon as a stabilizer. When a_1 meson is added in this approach, th…
It is known that including vector mesons stabilizes the size of a Skyrmion without the need for a Skyrme term. This paper provides the first results for static multi-Skyrmions in such a theory. The rational map ansatz is used to investigate multi-Skyrmions in a theory which includes the omega vector meson and has no Skyrme term. Bound states with baryon numbers two, three and four are found, which have axial, tetrahedral and cubic symmetries, respectively. The results reveal a qualitative similarity with the standard Skyrme model with a Skyrme term and no vector mesons, suggesting that some fe…

We introduce a novel Skyrme-like conserved current in the effective theory of pions and vector mesons based on the idea of hidden local symmetry. The associated charge is equivalent to the skyrmion charge for any smooth configuration. In addition, there exist singular configurations that can be identified as N_f=1 baryons charged under the new symmetry. Under this identification, the vector mesons play the role of the Chern-Simons vector fields living on the quantum Hall droplet that forms the N_f=1 baryon. We propose that this current is the correct effective expression for the baryon current…
We revisit baryons in the Skyrme model. Starting from static baryons in the helicity eigenstates, we generalize their wavefunctions to the non-static and relativistic regime. A new representation for gamma matrices in the soliton collective space is constructed and the corresponding Dirac equation is obtained. As an example, we draw consideration on how to apply this new representation on the calculus of vector current vacuum expectation values for baryon states of spin and isospin half and arbitrary momenta and we show how elastic form factors can be derived.
We study static solutions of the standard Skyrme model with a pion mass. Using approximately $10^5$ pseudo-random initial configurations made of single Skyrmions in the non-symmetrized product Ansatz and an automatic detection of repeated solutions, we find 409 local energy minimizers (Skyrmions) of the model with baryon numbers 1 through 16, of which 383 are new. In particular, we find new solutions for baryon numbers 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. Our results for the number of solutions per baryon number suggest that this number could grow either polynomially or exponentially. We i…
Starting from solutions of the lightly-bound Skyrme model, we construct many new Skyrmion solutions of the standard Skyrme model with tetrahedral or octahedral symmetry. These solutions are closely related to weight diagrams of the group SU(4), which enables us to systematically derive some geometric and energetic properties of the Skyrmions, up to baryon number 85. We discuss the rigid body quantization of these Skyrmions, and compare the results with properties of a selection of observed nuclei.
Quantized Skyrmions with baryon numbers $B=1,2$ and 4 are considered and angularly localized wavefunctions for them are found. By combining a few low angular momentum states, one can construct a quantum state whose spatial density is close to that of the classical Skyrmion, and has the same symmetries. For the B=1 case we find the best localized wavefunction among linear combinations of $j=1/2$ and $j=3/2$ angular momentum states. For B=2, we find that the $j=1$ ground state has toroidal symmetry and a somewhat reduced localization compared to the classical solution. For B=4, where the classic…
It is well-known that the winding number of the Skyrmion can be identified as the baryon number. We show in this paper that this result can also be established using the Atiyah-Singer index theorem and spectral flow arguments. We argue that this proof suggests that there are light quarks moving in the field of the Skyrmion. We then show that if these light degrees of freedom are averaged out, the low energy excitations of the Skyrmion are in fact spinorial. A natural consequence of our approach is the prediction of a $(1/2)^{-}$ state and its excitations in addition to the nucleon and delta. U…
We study baryons and baryonic matter in holographic QCD with $D4/D8/\bar{D8}$ multi-$D$ brane system. In large-$N_c$ holographic QCD, the baryon appears as a topologically non-trivial chiral soliton, which is called ``brane-induced Skyrmion''. We also analyze the features of the baryonic matter in holographic QCD by investigating the system of single brane-induced Skyrmion on a three-dimensional closed manifold $S^3$. We propose a new interesting picture of ``pion dominance'' near the critical density.
We discuss an ansatz for Skyrme fields in three dimensions which uses rational maps between Riemann spheres, and produces shell-like structures of polyhedral form. Houghton, Manton and Sutcliffe showed that a single rational map gives good approximations to the minimal energy Skyrmions up to baryon number of order ten. We show how the method can be generalised by using two or more rational maps to give a double-shell or multi-shell structure. Particularly interesting examples occur at baryon numbers twelve and fourteen.
In this paper we aim to determine the baryon numbers at which the minimal energy Skyrmion has icosahedral symmetry. By comparing polyhedra which arise as minimal energy Skyrmions with the dual of polyhedra that minimize the energy of Coulomb charges on a sphere, we are led to conjecture a sequence of magic baryon numbers, B=7,17,37,67,97,... at which the minimal energy Skyrmion has icosahedral symmetry and unusually low energy. We present evidence for this conjecture by applying a simulated annealing algorithm to compute energy minimizing rational maps for all degrees upto 40. Further evidence…
Transition from baryonic matter to color-flavor-locked quark matter is described in terms of skyrmion matter changing into half-skyrmion matter. The intermediate phase between the density $n_p$ at which a skyrmion turns into two half skyrmions and the chiral transition density $n_c^{χSR}$ at which hadronic matter changes over to quark matter corresponds to a chiral symmetry restored phase characterized by a vanishing quark condensate and a {\em non-vanishing} pion decay constant. When hidden local fields are incorporated, the vector manifestation of Harada-Yamawaki HLS theory implies that as d…
We study static and transport properties of Skyrmions living within a finite spatial volume in a flat (3+1)-dimensional spacetime. In particular, we derive an explicit analytic expression for the compression modulus corresponding to these Skyrmions living within a finite box and we show that such expression can produce a reasonable value. The gauged version of these solitons can be also considered. It is possible to analyze the order of magnitude of the contributions to the electrons conductivity associated to the interactions with this Baryonic environment. The typical order of magnitude for …
We present a simple model where a nucleon is treated as the Skyrmion, both monopole and Skyrmion are smooth solutions of the classical field equations, the baryon number non-conservation is explicitly built in and is due to the classical analogue of the triangle anomaly, and there is no necessity to consider leptons. We show by numerical analysis that there are no static classical solutions with non-zero baryon number on top of the monopole, i.e., that the monopole catalysis of Skyrmion decay indeed proceeds classically.
The canonical quantization method for collective coordinates in crystalline configurations of the generalized Skyrme model is applied in order to find the quantum ground state of Skyrmion crystals and study the quantum corrections to the binding energy resulting from the isospin degrees of freedom. This leads to a consistent description of asymmetric nuclear matter within the Skyrme framework and allows us to compute the symmetry energy of the Skyrmionic crystal as a function of the baryon density, and to compare with recent observational constraints.
A very simple, quadratic potential is used to construct vortex strings in a generalized Skyrme model and an additional quadratic potential is used to embed sine-Gordon-type halfkinks onto the string worldline, yielding half-Skyrmions on a string. The strings are furthermore compactified onto a circle and the halfkinks are forced to appear in pairs; in particular 2B halfkinks (half-Skyrmions) will appear as beads on a ring with B being the number of times the host vortex is twisted and also the baryon number (Skyrmion number) from the bulk point of view. Finally, we construct an effective field…
We show that quantum chiral anomaly of QCD in magnetic backgrounds induces a novel structure of electric charge inside baryons. To illustrate the anomaly effect, we employ the Skyrme model for baryons, with the anomaly-induced gauged Wess-Zumino term (π_0 + (multi-pion)) E_i B_i. Due to this term, the Skyrmions giving a local pion condensation ((π_0 + (multi-pion)) \neq 0) necessarily become a local charge source, in the background magnetic field B_i. We present detailed evaluation of the anomaly effects, and calculate the total induced charge, for various baryons in the magnetic field.
We show that skyrmions arising from compact five dimensional models have stable sizes. We numerically obtain the skyrmion configurations and calculate their size and energy. Although their size strongly depends on the magnitude of localized kinetic-terms, their energy is quite model-independent ranging between 50-65 times F_pi^2/m_rho, where F_pi is the Goldstone decay constant and m_rho the lowest Kaluza-Klein mass. These skyrmion configurations interpolate between small 4D YM instantons and 4D skyrmions made of Goldstones and a massive vector boson. Contrary to the original 4D skyrmion and p…
We review the SU(2) Skyrme model and describe its topological soliton solutions, which are called Skyrmions. Skyrmions provide a model of nuclei in which the conserved topological charge is identified with the baryon number of a nucleus. The semiclassical quantum theory of Skyrmions, in which they are treated as rigid bodies spinning in space and isospace, is described. We derive the energy spectra corresponding to various light nuclei, and predict a few new states. We also calculate the electromagnetic form factors describing the structure of the alpha-particle and lithium-6. Our recent repar…
