We introduce a novel Skyrme-like conserved current in the effective theory of pions and vector mesons based on the idea of hidden local symmetry. The associated charge is equivalent to the skyrmion charge for any smooth configuration. In addition, there exist singular configurations that can be identified as N_f=1 baryons charged under the new symmetry. Under this identification, the vector mesons play the role of the Chern-Simons vector fields living on the quantum Hall droplet that forms the N_f=1 baryon. We propose that this current is the correct effective expression for the baryon current at low energies. This proposal gives a unified picture for the two types of baryons and allows them to continuously transform one to the other in a natural way. In addition, Chern-Simons dualities on the droplet can be interpreted as a result of Seiberg-like duality between gluons and vector mesons.
We revisit the quantum Hall system with no Zeeman splitting energy using the noncommutative field theory. We analyze the BPS condition for the delta-function interaction near the filling factor $ν=1$. Multi-skyrmions are shown to saturate the BPS bounds. The dimension of the moduli space of $k$ skyrmions is $4k+2$. Advantage of the noncommutative field description is demonstrated through the derivation of the effective nonlinear $σ$ model Lagrangian.
By carefully considering a family of wave functions for Skyrmions in simple quantum Hall states, whose members are labelled by a non-negative integer and which properly generalizes the traditional Laughlin quasiparticle, we argue that the spin of this particle has a fractional part related in a universal fashion to the properties of the bulk state, and propose a direct experimental test of this claim. We argue directly also for the fractional charge and fractional quantum statistics of these particles. We show that certain spin-singlet quantum Hall states can be understood as arising from prim…
It has been recently shown that solitons are fundamental classical solutions of non-commutative field theories. We reconsider this issue from the standpoint of the Hall effect and identify some solutions with known solutions in the integer Hall effect with no Zeeman coupling.
At the filling factor $ν=2$ the bilayer quantum Hall system has three phases, the ferromagnetic phase (spin phase), the spin singlet phase (ppin phase) and the canted antiferromagnetic phase. We analyze soft waves and quasiparticle excitations in the spin and ppin phases. It is shown that the dynamic field is the Grassmannian G$_{4,2}$ field carrying four complex degrees of freedom. In each phase there are four complex soft waves (pseudo-Goldstone modes) and one kind of skyrmion excitations (G$_{4,2}$ skyrmions) flipping either spins or pseudospins coherently. An intriguing property is that a …
We discuss the contribution of magnetic Skyrmions to the Hall viscosity and propose a simple way to identify it in experiments. The topological Skyrmion charge density has a distinct signature in the electric Hall conductivity that is identified in existing experimental data. In an electrically neutral system, the Skyrmion charge density is directly related to the thermal Hall conductivity. These results are direct consequences of the field theory Ward identities, which relate various physical quantities based on symmetries and have been previously applied to quantum Hall systems.
We show that the ground states of spin-fermions interacting by a delta repulsive potential in a strong magnetic field can be put in one to one correspondence with the solitons of the $S_2$ non linear $σ$-model.
The Coulomb exchange interaction is the driving force for quantum coherence in quantum Hall systems. We construct a microscopic Landau-site Hamiltonian for the exchange interaction in bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets, which is characterized by the SU(4) isospin structure. By taking a continuous limit, the Hamiltonian gives rise to the SU(4) nonlinear sigma model in the von-Neumann-lattice formulation. The ground-state energy is evaluated at filling factors $ν=1,2,3,4$. It is shown at $ν=1$ that there are 3 independent soft waves, where only one soft wave is responsible for the coherent tunnel…
We study the nonrelativistic nonlinear sigma model with Hopf term in this paper. This is an important issue beacuse of its relation to the currently interesting studies in skyrmions in quantum Hall systems. We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of this system in $CP^1$ variables. When the coefficient of the Hopf term becomes zero we get the Landau-Lifshitz description of the ferromagnets. The addition of Hopf term dramatically alters the Hamiltonian analysis. The spin algebra is modified giving a new structure and interpretation to the system. We point out momentum and angular momentum generator…
We present a microscopic theory of skyrmions in the monolayer quantum Hall ferromagnet. It is a peculiar feature of the system that the number density and the spin density are entangled intrinsically as dictated by the W$%_{\infty}$ algebra. The skyrmion and antiskyrmion states are constructed as W$_{\infty }$-rotated states of the hole-excited and electron-excited states, respectively. They are spin textures accompanied with density modulation that decreases the Coulomb energy. We calculate their excitation energy as a function of the Zeeman gap and compared the result with experimental data.
It is well known that the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE) may be effectively represented by a Chern-Simons theory. In order to incorporate QH Skyrmions, we couple this theory to the topological spin current, and include the Hopf term. The cancellation of anomalies for chiral edge states, and the proviso that Skyrmions may be created and destroyed at the edge, fixes the coefficients of these new terms. Consequently, the charge and the spin of the Skyrmion are uniquely determined. For those two quantities we find the values $eνN_{Sky}$ and $νN_{Sky}/2$, respectively, where $e$ is electron …
We consider quantum Hall droplets on complex projective spaces with a combination of abelian and nonabelian background magnetic fields. Carrying out an analysis similar to what was done for abelian backgrounds, we show that the effective action for the edge excitations is given by a chiral, gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory generalized to higher dimensions.
We find that a gauged matrix model of rectangular fermionic matrices (a matrix version of the fermion harmonic oscillator) realizes a quantum hall droplet with manifest particle-hole symmetry. The droplet consists of free fermions on the topology of a sphere. It is also possible to deform the Hamiltonian by double trace operators, and we argue that this device can produce two body potentials which might lead the system to realize a fractional quantum hall state on the sphere. We also argue that a single gauged fermionic quantum mechanics of hermitian matrices realizes a droplet with an edge th…
Spin textures arise in the effective action approach to the quantum Hall effect. Up to now these textures, also called Skyrmions, have been mainly studied using approximations. Studies of its finite density form, the crystal, have been limited to a given symmetry and tend ignore Skyrmion deformation. Using a simulated annealing technique, adapted to problems with a long-range interaction, we are able to present the first full 2D study of quantum Hall Skyrmions and the corresponding crystals. Our results show that only the Skyrmions with topological charge one and two are bound and that the Sky…
We derive a generalized set of Ward identities that captures the effects of topological charge on Hall transport. The Ward identities follow from the 2+1 dimensional momentum algebra, which includes a central extension proportional to the topological charge density. In the presence of topological objects like Skyrmions, we observe that the central term leads to a direct relation between the thermal Hall conductivity and the topological charge density. We extend this relation to incorporate the effects of a magnetic field and an electric current. The topological charge density produces a distin…
We derive the hamiltonian and canonical structure for arbitrary deformations of a phase space (quantum Hall) droplet on a general manifold of any dimension. The derivation is based on a transformation that decouples the Casimirs of the density Poisson structure. The linearized theory reproduces the edge state chiral action of the droplets, while the nonlinear hamiltonian captures 1/N quantum corrections.
We review recent progresses towards an understanding of the Skyrmion Hall transport in insulating as well as conducting materials. First, we consider a theoretical breakthrough based on the quantum field theory Ward identity, a first principle analysis, relying on symmetries and conservation laws. Broken parity (inversion) symmetry plays a crucial role in Skyrmion Hall transport. In addition to the well known thermal and electric Hall conductivities, our analysis has led us to the discovery of a new and unforeseen physical quantity, Hall viscosity - an anti-symmetric part of the viscosity tens…
We derive the canonical structure and hamiltonian for arbitrary deformations of a higher-dimensional (quantum Hall) droplet of fermions with spin or color on a general phase space manifold. Gauge fields are introduced via a Kaluza-Klein construction on the phase space. The emerging theory is a nonlinear higher-dimensional generalization of the gauged Kac-Moody algebra. To leading order in h-bar this reproduces the edge state chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten action of the droplet.
