We consider an extension of the instanton bundles definition, given by Casnati-Coskun-Genk-Malaspina, for Fano threefolds, in order to include non locally-free ones on the blow-up $\widetilde{\mathbb{P}^{3}},$ of the projective $3-$space at a point. With the proposed definition, we prove that any reflexive instanton sheaf must be locally free, and that the strictly torsion free instanton sheaves have singularities of pure dimension $1.$ We construct examples and study their $μ-$stability. Furthermore, these sheaves will play a role in (partially) compactifying the t'Hooft component of the moduli space of instantons, on $\widetilde{\mathbb{P}^{3}}.$ Finally, examples of these are shown to be smooth and smoothable.
Generalizing the definitions originally presented by Kuznetsov and Faenzi, we study (possibly non locally free) instanton sheaves of arbitrary rank on Fano threefolds. We classify rank 1 instanton sheaves and describe all curves whose structure sheaves are rank 0 instanton sheaves. In addition, we show that every rank 2 instanton sheaf is an elementary transformation of a locally free instanton sheaf along a rank 0 instanton sheaf. To complete the paper, we describe the moduli space of rank 2 instanton sheaves of charge 2 on a quadric threefold $X$, and show that the full moduli space of rank …
We prove that the singular locus of a rank 2 instanton sheaf $E$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$ which is not locally free has pure dimension 1. Moreover, we also show that the dual and double dual of $E$ are isomorphic locally free instanton sheaves, and that the sheaves $\mathcal{E}xt^1(E,\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^3)$ and $E^{\vee\vee}/E$ are rank $0$ instantons. We also provide explicit examples of instanton sheaves of rank $3$ and $4$ illustrating that all of these claims are false for higher rank instanton sheaves.
We study a class of torsion-free sheaves on complex projective spaces which generalize the much studied mathematical instanton bundles. Instanton sheaves can be obtained as cohomologies of linear monads and are shown to be semistable if its rank is not too large, while semistable torsion-free sheaves satisfying certain cohomological conditions are instanton. We also study a few examples of moduli spaces of instanton sheaves.
A $h$-instanton sheaf on a closed subscheme $X$ of some projective space endowed with an ample and globally generated line bundle $\mathcal{O}_X(h)$ is a coherent sheaf whose cohomology table has a certain prescribed shape. In this paper we deal with $h$-instanton sheaves relating them to Ulrich sheaves. Moreover, we study $h$-instanton sheaves on smooth curves and surfaces, cyclic $n$-folds, Fano $3$-folds and scrolls over arbitrary smooth curves. We also deal with a family of monads associated to $h$-instanton bundles on varieties satisfying some mild extra technical conditions.
This paper has been withdraw. A fully revised version with two new co-authors has been posted: "ADHM construction of perverse instanton sheaves", arXiv:1201.5657.
We study the irreducible components of the moduli space of instanton sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$, that is rank 2 torsion free sheaves $E$ with $c_1(E)=c_3(E)=0$ satisfying $h^1(E(-2))=h^2(E(-2))=0$. In particular, we classify all instanton sheaves with $c_2(E)\le4$, describing all the irreducible components of their moduli space. A key ingredient for our argument is the study of the moduli space ${\mathcal T}(d)$ of stable sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Hilbert polynomial $P(t)=d\cdot t$, which contains, as an open subset, the moduli space of rank 0 instanton sheaves of multiplicity $d$; we desc…
We present a construction of framed torsion free instanton sheaves on a projective variety containing a fixed line which further generalizes the one on projective spaces. This is done by generalizing the so called ADHM variety. We show that the moduli space of such objects is a quasi projective variety, which is fine in the case of projective spaces. We also give an ADHM categorical description of perverse instanton sheaves in the general case, along with a hypercohomological characterization of these sheaves in the particular case of projective spaces.
We study the moduli space of rank 2 instanton sheaves on $\p3$ in terms of representations of a quiver consisting of 3 vertices and 4 arrows between two pairs of vertices. Aiming at an alternative compactification for the moduli space of instanton sheaves, we show that for each rank 2 instanton sheaf, there is a stability parameter $θ$ for which the corresponding quiver representation is $θ$-stable (in the sense of King), and that the space of stability parameters has a non trivial wall-and-chamber decomposition. Looking more closely at instantons of low charge, we prove that there are stabili…
We provide stacky generalizations of classical gauge-theoretic results inspired by Donaldson, the Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem and variants due to Bando and his collaborators. Moreover, we show an application of this machinery in the study of ALE spaces.
We give a remark on the wall crossing behavior of perverse coherent sheaves on a blow-up and stability condition constructed by Toda. We also explain the wall crossing of twisted stability in terms of stability condition.
We study semistable sheaves of rank $2$ with Chern classes $c_1=0$, $c_2=2$ and $c_3=0$ on the Fano 3-fold $V_5$ of Picard number $1$, degree $5$ and index $2$. We show that the moduli space of such sheaves has a component that is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^5$ by identifying it with the moduli space of semistable quiver representations. This provides a natural smooth compactification of the moduli space of minimal instantons, as well as Ulrich bundles of rank $2$ on $V_5$.
Let $\mathbb{T}$ be the three dimensional torus acting on $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ and $\mathcal{M}^{\mathbb{T}}_{\mathbb{P}^{3}}(c)$ be the fixed locus of the corresponding action on the moduli space of rank $2$ framed instanton sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^{3}.$ In this work, we prove that $\mathcal{M}^{\mathbb{T}}_{\mathbb{P}^{3}}(c)$ consist only of non locally-free instanton sheaves whose double dual is the trivial bundle $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{3}}^{\oplus 2}$. Moreover, We relate these instantons to Pandharipande-Thomas stable pairs and give a classification of their support. This allows to compute…
In order to study wall crossing formula of Donaldson type invariants on the blown-up plane, Nakajima-Yoshioka constructed a sequence of blow-up/blow-down diagrams connecting the moduli space of torsion free framed sheaves on projective plane, and that on its blow-up. In this paper, we prove that Nakajima-Yoshioka's diagram realizes the minimal model program. Furthermore, we obtain a fully-faithful embedding between the derived categories of these moduli spaces.
We show that instanton bundles of rank $r\le 2n-1$, defined as the cohomology of certain linear monads, on an $n$-dimensional projective variety with cyclic Picard group are semistable in the sense of Mumford-Takemoto. Furthermore, we show that rank $r\le n$ linear bundles with nonzero first Chern class over such varieties are stable. We also show that these bounds are sharp.
We construct monads for framed torsion-free sheaves on blow-ups of the complex projective plane at finitely many distinct points. Using these monads we prove that the moduli space of such sheaves is a smooth algebraic variety. Moreover we construct monads for families of such sheaves parameterized by a noetherian scheme S of finite type. A universal monad on the moduli space is introduced and used to prove that the moduli space is fine.
Let $f \colon X \to Y$ be the blow-up of a smooth projective variety $Y$ along its codimension two smooth closed subvariety. In this paper, we show that the moduli space of stable sheaves on $X$ and $Y$ are connected by a sequence of flip-like diagrams. The result is a higher dimensional generalization of the result of Nakajima and Yoshioka, which is the case of $\dim Y=2$. As an application of our general result, we study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of two points.
Let $X$ be the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ along $m$ general points, and $A=H-\sum \varepsilon_iE_i$ be a generic polarization with $0<\varepsilon_i\ll1$. We classify the Chern characters which satisfy the weak Brill-Noether property, i.e. a general sheaf in $M_A({\bf{v}})$, the moduli space of slope stable sheaves with Chern character ${\bf{v}}$, has at most one non-zero cohomology. We further give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of stable sheaves. Our strategy is to specialize to the case when the $m$ points are collinear.
Admissible locally-free sheaves on P^3, also known in the literature as mathematical instanton bundles, arise in twistor theory, and are in 1-1 correspondence with instantons on R^4. In this paper, we study admissible sheaves on P^3 from the algebraic geometric point of view. We discuss examples and compare the admissibility condition with semistability and splitting type.

We use a complex version of the celebrated Atiyah-Hitchin-Drinfeld-Manin matrix equations to construct admissible torsion-free sheaves on $\p^3$ and complex quantum instantons over our quantum Minkowski space-time. We identify the moduli spaces of various subclasses of sheaves on $\p^3$, and prove their smoothness. We also define the Laplace equation in the quantum Minkowski space-time, study its solutions and relate them to the admissibility condition for sheaves on $\p^3$.
We apply virtual localization to the problem of finding blowup formulae for virtual sheaf-theoretic invariants on a smooth projective surface. This leads to a general procedure that can be used to express virtual enumerative invariants on the blowup in terms of those on the original surface. We use an enhanced master space construction over the moduli spaces of $m$-stable sheaves introduced by Nakajima and Yoshioka. Our work extends their analogous results for the equivariant moduli spaces of framed sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$. In contrast to their work, we make no use of GIT methods and work wi…
Real blow-ups and more refined "zooms" play a key role in the analysis of singularities of complex-analytic differential modules. They do not change the underlying topology, but the uniform structure. This suggests to revisit the cohomology theory of differential modules with help of a suitable new notion of uniform sheaves based on the uniformity rather than the topology. We also investigate the $p$-adic situation (in particular, an analog of real blow-ups) from this uniform viewpoint.
We establish a blow-up formula for Hodge cohomology of locally free sheaves on smooth proper varieties over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. For this, we introduce a notion of relative Hodge sheaves and study their behavior under blow-ups along smooth centers. In particular, as an application, we study the blow-up invariance of the $E_2$-degeneracy of the Hochschild--Kostant--Rosenberg spectral sequence for smooth proper varieties.
This is the second of series of papers studyig moduli spaces of a certain class of coherent sheaves, which we call stable perverse coherent sheaves, on the blow-up of a projective surface at a point. The followings are main results of this paper: a) We describe the wall-crossing between moduli spaces caused by twisting of the line bundle associated with the exceptional divisor. b) We give the formula for virtual Hodge numbers of moduli spaces of stable perverse coherent sheaves. Moreover we also give proofs of the followings which we observed in a special case in arXiv:0802.3120: c) The moduli…
In the physicist's language, a brane in a hyperkahler manifold is a submanifold which is either complex or lagrangian with respect to three Kahler structures of the ambient manifold. By considering the fixed loci of certain involutions, we describe branes in Nakajima quiver varieties of all possible types. We then focus on the moduli space of framed torsion free sheaves on the projective plane, showing how the involutions considered act on sheaves, and proving the existence of branes in some cases.
We provide a description of the moduli space of framed autodual instanton bundles on projective space, focusing on the particular cases of symplectic and orthogonal instantons. Our description will use the generalized ADHM equations which define framed instanton sheaves.
This is the first of two papers studying moduli spaces of a certain class of coherent sheaves, which we call {\it stable perverse coherent sheaves}, on the blowup of a projective surface. They are used to relate usual moduli spaces of stable sheaves on a surface and its blowup. In this first part, we give a quiver (or ADHM) description of moduli spaces for framed perverse coherent sheaves on the blowup of the projective plane.
We generalize Nakajima-Yoshioka blowup equations to arbitrary gauge group with hypermultiplets in arbitrary representations. Using our blowup equations, we compute the instanton partition functions for 4d N=2 and 5d N=1 gauge theories for arbitrary gauge theory with a large class of matter representations, without knowing explicit construction of the instanton moduli space. Our examples include exceptional gauge theories with fundamentals, SO(N) gauge theories with spinors, and SU(6) gauge theories with rank-3 antisymmetric hypers. Remarkably, the instanton partition function is completely det…
We study semi-stable sheaves of rank $2$ with Chern class $c_1=0$, $c_2=2$ and $c_3=0$ on the Fano 3-folds $V_4$ of Picard number $1$, degree $4$ and index $2$. We show the moduli space of such sheaves is isomorphic to the moduli space of semi-stable rank $2$ even degree vector bundles on a genus $2$ curve. This provides a natural smooth compatification of the moduli space of Ulrich bundles of rank $2$ on $V_4$.
In earlier papers arXiv:0802.3120, arXiv:0806.0463 of this series we constructed a sequence of intermediate moduli spaces $\bM^m(c)$ connecting a moduli space $M(c)$ of stable torsion free sheaves on a nonsingular complex projective surface and $\bM(c)$ on its one point blow-up. They are moduli spaces of perverse coherent sheaves on the blow-up. In this paper we study how Donaldson-type invariants (integrals of cohomology classes given by universal sheaves) change from $\bM^m(c)$ to $\bM^{m+1}(c)$, and then from $M(c)$ to $\bM(c)$. As an application we prove that Nekrasov-type partition functi…
I will explain my joint paper `Instantons moduli spaces and W-algebras' with A.Braverman, M.Finkelberg, arXiv:1406.2381. I will concentrate on the geometric part, that is a study of perverse sheaves on instanton moduli spaces. I place a particular emphasize on the hyperbolic restriction functor and stable envelop, which are our key tools, and appear also in other situations in geometric representation theory. These are lecture notes for a course in 2015 PCMI.
We propose a general definition of mathematical instanton bundle with given charge on any Fano threefold extending the classical definitions on $\mathbb P^3$ and on Fano threefold with cyclic Picard group. Then we deal with the case of the blow up of $\mathbb P^3$ at a point, giving an explicit construction of instanton bundles satisfying some important extra properties: moreover, we also show that they correspond to smooth points of a component of the moduli space.
A global description of the fine Simpson moduli spaces of $1$-dimensional sheaves supported on plane quartics is given: we describe the gluing of the Brill-Noether loci described by Drézet and Maican and show that the Simpson moduli space $M=M_{4m\pm 1}(\mathbb P_2)$ is a blow-down of a blow-up of a projective bundle over a smooth moduli space of Kronecker modules. An easy computation of the Poincaré polynomial of $M$ is presented.
We calculate Betti numbers of the framed moduli space of instantons on $\hat{{\bf C}^2/{\bf Z}_2}$, under the assumption that the corresponding torsion free sheaves $E$ have vanishing properties ($Hom(E,E(-l_\infty))=Ext^2(E,E(-l_\infty))=0$). Moreover we derive the generating function of Betti numbers and obtain closed formulas. On the other hand, we derive a universal relation between the generating function of Betti numbers of the moduli spaces of stable sheaves on $X$ with an $A_1$-singularity and that on $\hat{X}$ blow-uped at the singularity, by using Weil conjecture. We call this the $O…
Let ${\mathcal I}(n)$ denote the moduli space of rank $2$ instanton bundles of charge $n$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$. We know from several authors that ${\mathcal I}(n)$ is an irreducible, nonsingular and affine variety of dimension $8n-3$. Since every rank $2$ instanton bundle on ${\mathbb P}^3$ is stable, we may regard ${\mathcal I}(n)$ as an open subset of the projective Gieseker--Maruyama moduli scheme ${\mathcal M}(n)$ of rank $2$ semistable torsion free sheaves $F$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$ with Chern classes $c_1=c_3=0$ and $c_2=n$, and consider the closure $\overline{{\mathcal I}(n)}$ of ${\mathcal I…
We study birational geometry of the moduli space of stable sheaves on a quadric surface with Hilbert polynomial $5m + 1$ and $c_{1} = (2, 3)$. We describe a birational map between the moduli space and a projective bundle over a Grassmannian as a composition of smooth blow-ups/downs.
We show that the moduli space of semi-stable sheaves on a smooth quadric surface, having dimension 1, multiplicity 4, Euler characteristic 2, and first Chern class (2, 2), is the blow-up at two points of a certain hypersurface in a weighted projective space.
We classify all Gieseker semi-stable sheaves on the complex projective plane that have dimension 1, multiplicity 6 and Euler characteristic 3. We show that their moduli space is birational to the blow-up at a special point of a certain moduli space of semi-stable Kronecker modules.
In the Simpson moduli space $M$ of semi-stable sheaves with Hilbert polynomial $dm-1$ on a projective plane we study the closed subvariety $M'$ of sheaves that are not locally free on their support. We show that for $d\ge 4$ it is a singular subvariety of codimension $2$ in $M$. The blow up of $M$ along $M'$ is interpreted as a (partial) modification of $M\setminus M'$ by vector bundles (on support).
We study the local holomorphic Euler characteristic $χ(x,\mathcal{F})$ of sheaves near a surface singularity obtained from contracting a line $\ell$ inside a smooth surface $Z$. We prove non-existence of sheaves with certain prescribed numerical invariants. Non-existence of instantons on $Z$ with certain charges follows, and we conclude that $\ell^2$ poses an obstruction to instanton decay. A Macaulay 2 algorithm to compute $χ$ is made available at http://www.maths.ed.ac.uk/~s0571100/Instanton/
This article computes the generating functions of the Betti numbers of the moduli space of stable sheaves of rank 3 on the projective plane P2 and its blow-up. Wall-crossing is used to obtain the Betti numbers on the blow-up. These can be derived equivalently using flow trees, which appear in the physics of BPS-states. The Betti numbers for P2 follow from those for the blow-up by the blow-up formula. The generating functions are expressed in terms of modular functions and indefinite theta functions.
A framed symplectic sheaf on a smooth projective surface $X$ is a torsion-free sheaf $E$ together with a trivialization on a divisor $D\subseteq X$ and a morphism $Λ^{2}E\rightarrow\mathcal{O}_{X}$ satisfying some additional conditions. We construct a moduli space for framed symplectic sheaves on a surface, and present a detailed study for $X=\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{2}$. In this case, the moduli space is irreducible and admits an ADHM-type description and a birational proper map into the space of framed symplectic ideal instantons.
We deal with instanton bundles on the product ${\mathbb P}^1\times{\mathbb P}^2$ and the blow up of ${\mathbb P}^3$ along a line. We give an explicit construction leading to instanton bundles. Moreover, we also show that they correspond to smooth points of a unique irreducible component of their moduli space.
We give a mathematically rigorous proof of Nekrasov's conjecture: the integration in the equivariant cohomology over the moduli spaces of instantons on $\mathbb R^4$ gives a deformation of the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills theory. Through a study of moduli spaces on the blowup of $\mathbb R^4$, we derive a differential equation for the Nekrasov's partition function. It is a deformation of the equation for the Seiberg-Witten prepotential, found by Losev et al., and further studied by Gorsky et al.
We describe new components of the Gieseker--Maruyama moduli scheme $\mathcal{M}(n)$ of semistable rank 2 sheaves $E$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $c_1(E)=0$, $c_2(E)=n$ and $c_3(E)=0$ whose generic point corresponds to non locally free sheaves. We show that such components grow in number as $n$ grows, and discuss how they intersect the instanton component. As an application, we prove that $\mathcal{M}(2)$ is connected, and identify a connected subscheme of $\mathcal{M}(3)$ consisting of 7 irreducible components.
We show that the universal plane curve M of fixed degree d > 2 can be seen as a closed subvariety in a certain Simpson moduli space of 1-dimensional sheaves on a projective plane contained in the stable locus. The universal singular locus coincides with the subvariety of M consisting of sheaves that are not locally free on their support. It turns out that the blow up of M along M' may be naturally seen as a compactification of M_B = M\M' by vector bundles (on support).
The space of smooth rational cubic curves in projective space $\PP^r$ ($r\ge 3$) is a smooth quasi-projective variety, which gives us an open subset of the corresponding Hilbert scheme, the moduli space of stable maps, or the moduli space of stable sheaves. By taking its closure, we obtain three compactifications $\bH$, $\bM$, and $\bS$ respectively. In this paper, we compare these compactifications. First, we prove that $\bH$ is the blow-up of $\bS$ along a smooth subvariety which is the locus of stable sheaves which are planar (i.e. support is contained in a plane). Next we prove that $\bS$ …
We study the moduli space of stable sheaves of Euler characteristic 1 supported on curves of arithmetic genus 3 contained in a smooth quadric surface. We show that this moduli space is rational. We compute its Betti numbers by studying the variation of the moduli spaces of alpha-semi-stable pairs. We classify the stable sheaves using locally free resolutions or extensions. We give a global description: the moduli space is obtained from a certain flag Hilbert scheme by performing two flips followed by a blow-down.
We give further counterexamples to the conjectural construction of Bridgeland stability on threefolds due to Bayer, Macrì, and Toda. This includes smooth projective threefolds containing a divisor that contracts to a point, and Weierstraß elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. Furthermore, we show that if the original conjecture, or a minor modification of it, holds on a smooth projective threefold, then the space of stability conditions is non-empty on the blow up at an arbitrary point. More precisely, there are stability conditions on the blow up for which all skyscraper sheaves are semistable.
Let $\M_{k}^{n}$ be the moduli space of based (anti-self-dual) instantons on $\cpbar$ of charge $k$ and rank $n$. There is a natural inclusion of rank $n$ instantons into rank $n+1$. We show that the direct limit space is homotopy equivalent to $BU(k)\times BU(k)$. The moduli spaces also have the following algebro-geometric interpretation: Let $\linf$ be a line in the complex projective plane and consider the blow-up at a point away from $\linf$. $\M _{k}^{n}$ can be described as the moduli space of rank $n$ holomorphic bundles on the blownup projective plane with $c_{1}=0$ and $c_{2}=k$ and w…
