In this paper, we consider finitely many interval maps simultaneously acting on the unit interval $I = [0, 1]$ in the real line $\mathbb{R}$; each with utmost finitely many jump discontinuities and study certain important statistical properties. Even though we use the symbolic space on $N$ letters to reduce the case of simultaneous dynamics to maps on an appropriate space, our aim in this paper remains to resolve ergodicity, rates of recurrence, decay of correlations and invariance principles leading upto the central limit theorem for the dynamics that evolves through simultaneous action. In order to achieve our ends, we define various Ruelle operators, normalise them by various means and exploit their spectra.
In this paper we investigate multifractal decompositions based on values of Birkhoff averages of functions from a class of symbolically continuous functions. This will be done for an expanding interval map with infinitely many branches and is a generalisation of previous work for expanding maps with finitely many branches. We show that there are substantial differences between this case and the setting where the expanding map has only finitely many branches.
According to Thurston's stability theorem, every group of C^1 diffeomorphisms of the closed interval is locally indicable (.e., every finitely generated subgroup factors through Z). We show that, even for finitely generated groups, the converse of this statement is not true. More precisely, we show that the semi-direct product between F_2 an Z^2, although locally indicable, does not embed into Diff_+^1 (]0,1[). (Here F_2 is any free subgroup of SL(2,Z), and its action on Z^2 is the projective one.) Moreover, we show that for every non-solvable subgroup G of SL(2,Z), the semi-direct product bet…
In this paper we consider continued fraction (CF) expansions on intervals different from $[0,1]$. For every $x$ in such interval we find a CF expansion with a finite number of possible digits. Using the natural extension, the density of the invariant measure is obtained in a number of examples. In case this method does not work, a Gauss-Kuzmin-Lévy based approximation method is used. Finally, a subfamily of the $N$-expansions is studied. In particular, the entropy as a function of a parameter $α$ is estimated for $N=2$ and $N=36$. Interesting behavior can be observed from numerical results.
We study countably monotone and Markov interval maps. We establish sufficient conditions for uniqueness of a conjugate map of constant slope. We explain how global window perturbation can be used to generate a large class of maps satisfying these conditions.
In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of the generalized intrinsic level set with respect to the given ergodic meausre in a class of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps with finitely many branches.
We consider piecewise expanding maps of the interval with finitely many branches of monotonicity and show that they are generically combinatorially stable, i.e., the number of ergodic attractors and their corresponding mixing periods do not change under small perturbations of the map. Our methods provide a topological description of the attractor and, in particular, give an elementary proof of the density of periodic orbits.
We consider the restriction of interval exchange transformations to algebraic number fields, which leads to maps on lattices. We characterize renormalizability arithmetically, and study its relationships with a geometrical quantity that we call the drift vector. We exhibit some examples of renormalizable interval exchange maps with zero and non-zero drift vector, and carry out some investigations of their properties. In particular, we look for evidence of the finite decomposition property: each lattice is the union of finitely many orbits.
For a continuous map on a topological graph containing a unique loop S, it is possible to define the degree and, for a map of degree 1, rotation numbers. It is known that the set of rotation numbers of points in S is a compact interval and for every rational r in this interval there exists a periodic point of rotation number r. The whole rotation set (i.e. the set of all rotation numbers) may not be connected and it is not known in general whether it is closed. A sun graph is the space consisting in finitely many segments attached by one of their endpoints to a circle. We show that, for a map …
For every group $G$, we show that either $G$ has a topologically transitive action on the line $\mathbb R$ by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms, or every orientation-preserving action of $G$ on $\mathbb R$ has a wandering interval. According to this result, all groups are divided into two types: transitive type and wandering type, and the types of several groups are determined. We also show that every finitely generated orderable group of wandering type is indicable. As a corollary, we show that if a higher rank lattice $Γ$ is orderable, then $Γ$ is of transitive type.
Switched server systems are mathematical models of manufacturing, traffic and queueing systems that have being studied since the early 1990s. In particular, it is known that typically the dynamics of such systems is asymptotically periodic: each orbit of the system converges to one of its finitely many limit cycles. In this article, we provide an explicit example of a switched server system with exotic behavior: each orbit of the system converges to the same Cantor attractor. To accomplish this goal, we bring together recent advances in the understanding of the topological dynamics of piecewis…
We consider Abelian-by-cyclic groups for which the cyclic factor acts by hyperbolic automorphisms on the Abelian subgroup. We show that if such a group acts faithfully by $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of the closed interval with no global fixed point at the interior, then the action is topologically conjugated to that of an affine group. Moreover, in case of non-Abelian image, we show a rigidity result concerning the multipliers of the homotheties, despite the fact that the conjugacy is not necessarily smooth. Some consequences for non-solvable groups are proposed. In particular, we give new proofs/ex…
With each piecewise monotonic map of the unit interval, a dimension triple is associated. The dimension triple, viewed as a Z[t, t^{-1}] module, is finitely generated, and generators are identified. Dimension groups are computed for Markov maps, unimodal maps, multimodal maps, and interval exchange maps. It is shown that the dimension group defined here is isomorphic to K_0(A), where A is a C*-algebra (an "AI-algebra") defined in dynamical terms.
We consider dynamical systems given by interval maps with a finite number of turning points (including critical points, discontinuities) possibly of different critical orders from two sides. If such a map $f$ is continuous and piecewise $C^2$, satisfying negative Schwarzian derivative and some summability conditions on the growth of derivatives and recurrence along the turning orbits, then $f$ has finitely many attractors whose union of basins of attraction has total probability, and each attractor supports an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure $μ$. Over each attractor there e…
For a Markov map of an interval or the circle with countably many branches and finitely many neutral periodic points, we establish conditional variational formulas for the mixed multifractal spectra of Birkhoff averages of countably many observables, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of invariant probability measures. Using our results, we are able to exhibit new fractal-geometric results for backward continued fraction expansions of real numbers, answering in particular a question of Pollicott. Moreover, we establish formulas for multi-cusp winding spectra for the Bowen-Series maps associat…
According to the classical Plante-Thurston Theorem, all nilpotent groups of $C^2$-diffeomorphisms of the closed interval are Abelian. Using techniques coming from the works of Denjoy and Pixton, Farb and Franks constructed a faithful action by $C^1$-diffeomorphisms of $[0,1]$ for every finitely-generated, torsion-free, non-Abelian nilpotent group. In this work, we give a version of this construction that is sharp in what concerns the Hölder regularity of the derivatives. Half of the proof relies on results on random paths on Heisenberg-like groups that are interesting by themselves.

We give new examples of simple finitely generated groups arising from actions of free abelian groups on the Cantor sets. As particular examples, we discuss groups of interval exchange transformations, and a group naturally associated with the Penrose tilings. Many groups in this class are amenable.
A standard interval exchange map is a one-to-one map of the interval which is locally a translation except at finitely many singularities. We define for such maps, in terms of the Rauzy-Veech continuous fraction algorithm, a diophantine arithmetical condition called restricted Roth type which is almost surely satisfied in parameter space. Let $T_0$ be a standard interval exchange map of restricted Roth type, and let $r$ be an integer $\geq 2$. We prove that, amongst $C^{r+3}$ deformations of $T_0$ which are $C^{r+3}$ tangent to $T_0$ at the singularities, those which are conjugated to $T_0$ by…

In this monograph, we give an account of the relationship between the algebraic structure of finitely generated and countable groups and the regularity with which they act on manifolds. We concentrate on the case of one--dimensional manifolds, culminating with a uniform construction of finitely generated groups acting with prescribed regularity on the compact interval and on the circle. We develop the theory of dynamical obstructions to smoothness, beginning with classical results of Denjoy, to more recent results of Kopell, and to modern results such as the $abt$--Lemma. We give a classificat…
We introduce and study the notion of a chain group of homeomorphisms of a one-manifold, which is a certain generalization of Thompson's group $F$. The resulting class of groups exhibits a combination of uniformity and diversity. On the one hand, a chain group either has a simple commutator subgroup or the action of the group has a wandering interval. In the latter case, the chain group admits a canonical quotient which is also a chain group, and which has a simple commutator subgroup. On the other hand, every finitely generated subgroup of $\operatorname{Homeo}^+(I)$ can be realized as a subgr…
