We study countably monotone and Markov interval maps. We establish sufficient conditions for uniqueness of a conjugate map of constant slope. We explain how global window perturbation can be used to generate a large class of maps satisfying these conditions.
We study continuous countably piecewise monotone interval maps, and formulate conditions under which these are conjugate to maps of constant slope, particularly when this slope is given by the topological entropy of the map. We confine our investigation to the Markov case and phrase our conditions in the terminology of the Vere-Jones classification of infinite matrices.
In this paper, we study hyperbolic rational maps with finitely connected Fatou sets. We construct models of post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping schemes for such maps, generalizing post-critically finite rational maps in the case of connected Julia set. We show they are general limits of rational maps as we quasiconformally stretch the dynamics. Conversely, we use quasiconformal surgery to show any post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping scheme arises as such a limit. We construct abundant examples thanks to the flexibilities of the models, and use them to construct a sequence…
In this paper, we consider finitely many interval maps simultaneously acting on the unit interval $I = [0, 1]$ in the real line $\mathbb{R}$; each with utmost finitely many jump discontinuities and study certain important statistical properties. Even though we use the symbolic space on $N$ letters to reduce the case of simultaneous dynamics to maps on an appropriate space, our aim in this paper remains to resolve ergodicity, rates of recurrence, decay of correlations and invariance principles leading upto the central limit theorem for the dynamics that evolves through simultaneous action. In o…
For a transitive countably piecewise monotone Markov interval map we consider the question whether there exists a conjugate map of constant slope. The answer varies depending on whether the map is continuous or only piecewise continuous, whether it is mixing or not, what slope we consider, and whether the conjugate map is defined on a bounded interval, half-line or the whole real line (with the infinities included).
In this paper, we consider the dynamics of a skew-product map defined on the Cartesian product of the symbolic one-sided shift space on $N$ symbols and the complex sphere where we allow $N$ rational maps, $R_{1}, R_{2}, \cdots, R_{N}$, each with degree $d_{i};\ 1 \le i \le N$ and with at least one $R_{i}$ in the collection whose degree is at least $2$. We obtain results regarding the distribution of pre-images of points and the periodic points in a subset of the product space (where the skew-product map does not behave normally). We further explore the ergodicity of the Sumi-Urbanskii (equilib…
We associate with every locally expanding self-covering $f:M\to M$ of a compact path connected metric space a finitely presented group $V_f$. We prove that this group is a complete invariant of the dynamical system: two groups $V_{f_1}$ and $V_{f_2}$ are isomorphic as abstract groups if and only if the corresponding dynamical systems are topologically conjugate. We also show that the commutator subgroup of $V_f$ is simple, and give a topological interpretation of $V_f/V_f'$.
We study countably piecewise continuous, piecewise monotone interval maps. We establish a necessary and sufficient criterion for the existence of a nondecreasing semiconjugacy to a map of constant slope in terms of the existence of an eigenvector of an operator acting on a space of measures. Then we give sufficient conditions under which this criterion is not satisfied. Finally, we give examples of maps not semiconjugate to a map of constant slope via a nondecreasing map. Our examples are continuous and transitive.
In this paper we investigate multifractal decompositions based on values of Birkhoff averages of functions from a class of symbolically continuous functions. This will be done for an expanding interval map with infinitely many branches and is a generalisation of previous work for expanding maps with finitely many branches. We show that there are substantial differences between this case and the setting where the expanding map has only finitely many branches.
It is well known that a continuous piecewise monotone interval map with positive topological entropy is semiconjugate to a map of a constant slope and the same entropy, and if it is additionally transitive then this semiconjugacy is actually a conjugacy. We generalize this result to piecewise continuous piecewise monotone interval maps, and as a consequence, get it also for piecewise monotone graph maps. We show that assigning to a continuous transitive piecewise monotone map of positive entropy a map of constant slope conjugate to it defines an operator, and show that this operator is not con…
This paper studies NET map slope functions. It establishes Lipschitz-type conditions for them. It relates Lipschitz-type conditions to the half-space theorem. It gives bounds on the number of slope function fixed points. It provides examples of rational NET maps with many matings.
In this paper, we introduce a new entropy-like invariant, named Hausdorff metric entropy, for finitely generated semigroups acting on compact metric spaces from a set-valued view and study its properties. We establish the relation between Hausdorff metric entropy and topological entropy of a semigroup defined by Biś. Some examples with positive or zero Hausdorff metric entropy are given. Moreover, some notions of chaos are also well generalized for finitely generated semigroups from a set-valued view.
For a Markov map of an interval or the circle with countably many branches and finitely many neutral periodic points, we establish conditional variational formulas for the mixed multifractal spectra of Birkhoff averages of countably many observables, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of invariant probability measures. Using our results, we are able to exhibit new fractal-geometric results for backward continued fraction expansions of real numbers, answering in particular a question of Pollicott. Moreover, we establish formulas for multi-cusp winding spectra for the Bowen-Series maps associat…
For a continuous map on a topological graph containing a unique loop S, it is possible to define the degree and, for a map of degree 1, rotation numbers. It is known that the set of rotation numbers of points in S is a compact interval and for every rational r in this interval there exists a periodic point of rotation number r. The whole rotation set (i.e. the set of all rotation numbers) may not be connected and it is not known in general whether it is closed. A sun graph is the space consisting in finitely many segments attached by one of their endpoints to a circle. We show that, for a map …
In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of the generalized intrinsic level set with respect to the given ergodic meausre in a class of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps with finitely many branches.
We give a characterization of hypercyclic abelian semigroup G of affine maps on C^n. If G is finitely generated, this characterization is explicit. We prove in particular that no abelian group generated by n affine maps on C^n has a dense orbit.
We show that the conjugacy class of an eventually expanding continuous piecewise affine interval map is contained in a smooth codimension 1 submanifold of parameter space. In particular conjugacy classes have empty interior. This is based on a study of the relation between induced Markov maps and ergodic theoretical behavior.
We compare a piecewise linear map with constant slope beta>1 and a piecewise linear map with constant slope -beta. These maps are called the positive and negative beta-transformations. We show that for a certain set of beta's, the multinacci numbers, there exists a measurable isomorphism between these two maps. We further show that for for all other values of beta between 1 and 2 the two maps cannot be isomorphic.
We prove that for continuous maps on the interval, the existence of an n-cycle, implies the existence of n-1 points which interwind the original ones and are permuted by the map. We then use this combinatorial result to show that piecewise affine maps (with no zero slope) cannot be infinitely renormalizable.
We study the convergence of graphs consisting of finitely many internal rays for degenerating Newton maps. We state a sufficient condition to guarantee the convergence. As an application, we investigate the boundedness of hyperbolic components in the moduli space of quartic Newton maps. We prove that such a hyperbolic component is bounded if and only if every element has degree $2$ on the immediate basin of each root.
Let $G$ be a semiabelian variety defined over an algebraically closed field $K$, endowed with a rational self-map $Φ$. Let $α\in G(K)$ and let $Γ\subseteq G(K)$ be a finitely generated subgroup. We show that the set $\{n\in\mathbb{N}\colon Φ^n(α)\in Γ\}$ is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions along with a set of Banach density equal to $0$. In addition, assuming $Φ$ is regular, we prove that the set $S$ must be finite.
We consider piecewise expanding maps of the interval with finitely many branches of monotonicity and show that they are generically combinatorially stable, i.e., the number of ergodic attractors and their corresponding mixing periods do not change under small perturbations of the map. Our methods provide a topological description of the attractor and, in particular, give an elementary proof of the density of periodic orbits.
We consider the restriction of interval exchange transformations to algebraic number fields, which leads to maps on lattices. We characterize renormalizability arithmetically, and study its relationships with a geometrical quantity that we call the drift vector. We exhibit some examples of renormalizable interval exchange maps with zero and non-zero drift vector, and carry out some investigations of their properties. In particular, we look for evidence of the finite decomposition property: each lattice is the union of finitely many orbits.
We show that, in many situations, a homeomorphism $f$ of a manifold $M$ may be recovered from the (marked) isomorphism class of a finitely generated group of homeomorphisms containing $f$. As an application, we relate the notions of {\em critical regularity} and of {\em differentiable rigidity}, give examples of groups of diffeomorphisms of 1-manifolds with strong differential rigidity, and in so doing give an independent, short proof of a recent result of Kim and Koberda that there exist finitely generated groups of $C^α$ diffeomorphisms of a 1-manifold $M$, not embeddable into $\mathrm{Diff}…
Let $K$ be a number field. Let $S$ be a finite set of places of $K$ containing all the archimedean ones. Let $R_S$ be the ring of $S$-integers of $K$. In the present paper we consider endomorphisms of $\pro$ of degree 2, defined over $K$, with good reduction outside $S$. We prove that there exist only finitely many such endomorphisms, up to conjugation by ${\rm PGL}_2(R_S)$, admitting a periodic point in $\po$ of order $>3$. Also, all but finitely many classes with a periodic point in $\po$ of order 3 are parametrized by an irreducible curve.
We prove existence of finitely many ergodic equilibrium states for a large class of non-uniformly expanding local homeomorphisms on compact manifolds and Holder continuous potentials with not very large oscillation. No Markov structure is assumed. If the transformation is topologically mixing there is a unique equilibrium state, it is exact and satisfies a non-uniform Gibbs property. Under mild additional assumptions we also prove that the equilibrium states vary continuously with the dynamics and the potentials (statistical stability) and are also stable under stochastic perturbations of the …
Given a closed, orientable surface of constant negative curvature and genus $g \ge 2$, we study a family of generalized Bowen-Series boundary maps and prove the following rigidity result: in this family the topological entropy is constant and depends only on the genus of the surface. We give an explicit formula for this entropy and show that the value of the topological entropy also stays constant in the Teichmüller space of the surface. The proofs use conjugation to maps of constant slope.
We establish self-norming central limit theorems for non-stationary time series arising as observations on sequential maps possessing an indifferent fixed point. These transformations are obtained by perturbing the slope in the Pomeau-Manneville map. We also obtain quenched central limit theorems for random compositions of these maps.
We study relationships between the asymptotic behaviour of a non-elliptic semigroup of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disk and the geometry of its planar domain (the image of the Koenigs function). We establish a sufficient condition for the trajectories of the semigroup to converge to its Denjoy-Wolff point with a definite slope. We obtain as a corollary two previously known sufficient conditions.
We study continuous countably (strictly) monotone maps defined on a tame graph, i.e., a special Peano continuum for which the set containing branchpoints and endpoints has a countable closure. In our investigation we confine ourselves to the countable Markov case. We show a necessary and sufficient condition under which a locally eventually onto, countably Markov map $f$ of a tame graph $G$ is conjugate to a constant slope map $g$ of a countably affine tame graph. In particular, we show that in the case of a Markov map $f$ that corresponds to recurrent transition matrix, the condition is satis…
For finitely generated groups $H$ and $G$, we observe that $H$ admits a translation-like action on $G$ implies there is a regular map, which was introduced in Benjamini, Schramm and Timár's joint paper, from $H$ to $G$. Combining with several known obstructions to the existence of regular maps, we have various applications. For example, we show that the Baumslag-Solitar groups do not admit translation-like actions on the classical lamplighter group.
With each piecewise monotonic map of the unit interval, a dimension triple is associated. The dimension triple, viewed as a Z[t, t^{-1}] module, is finitely generated, and generators are identified. Dimension groups are computed for Markov maps, unimodal maps, multimodal maps, and interval exchange maps. It is shown that the dimension group defined here is isomorphic to K_0(A), where A is a C*-algebra (an "AI-algebra") defined in dynamical terms.
We consider the dynamics of skew product maps associated with finitely generated semigroups of rational maps on the Riemann sphere. We show that under some conditions on the dynamics and the potential function ψ, there exists a unique equilibrium state for ψand a unique $\exp(¶(ψ)-ψ)$-conformal measure, where P(ψ) denotes the topological pressure of ψ.
In the present paper we study two sequences of real numbers associated to a symplectic diffeomorphism: the uniform norm of the differential of its n-th iteration and the word length of its n-th iteration. In the latter case we assume that our diffeomorphism lies in a finitely generated group of symplectic diffeomorphisms. We find lower bounds on the growth rates of these sequences in a number of situations. These bounds depend on the symplectic geometry of the manifold rather than on the specific choice of a diffeomorphism. They are obtained by using recent results of Schwarz on Floer homology…
