Here we study characteristic length scales in an aqueous suspension of symmetric oppositely charged colloid subject to a uniform electric field by Brownian Dynamics simulations. We consider a sufficiently strong electric field where the like charges in the system form macroscopic lanes. We construct spatial correlation functions characterizing structural order and that of particles of different mobilities in-plane transverse to the electric field at a given time. We call these functions as equal time density correlation function (ETDCF). The ETDCF between particles of different charges, irrespective of mobilities, are called structural ETDCFs, while those between particles of different mobilities are called the dynamic ETDCF. We extract the characteristic length of correlation by fitting the envelopes of the ETDCFs to exponential dependence. We find that structural ETDCF and the dynamical-ETDCFs of the slow particles increase with time. This suggests that the slow particles undergo microphase separation in the background of the fast particles which drive the structural pattern in the plane transverse to the lanes. The ETDCFs can be measured for colloidal systems directly following particle motion by video-microscopy and may be useful to understand patterns out of equilibrium.
Recent computational and theoretical studies have shown that the deformation of colloidal suspensions under a steady shear is highly heterogeneous at the particle level and demonstrate a critical influence on the macroscopic deformation behavior. Despite its relevance to a wide variety of industrial applications of colloidal suspensions, scattering studies focusing on addressing the heterogeneity of the non-equilibrium colloidal structure are scarce thus far. Here, we report the first experimental result using small-angle neutron scattering. From the evolution of strain heterogeneity, we concl…
Rheological measurements of model colloidal gels reveal that large variations in the shear moduli as colloidal volume-fraction changes are not reflected by simple structural parameters such as the coordination number, which remains almost a constant. We resolve this apparent contradiction by conducting a normal mode analysis of experimentally measured bond networks of the gels. We find that structural heterogeneity of the gels, which leads to floppy modes and a nonaffine-affine crossover as frequency increases, evolves as a function of the volume fraction and is key to understand the frequency…
When a liquid film of colloidal solution consisting of particles of different sizes is dried on a substrate, the colloids often stratify, where smaller colloids are laid upon larger colloids. This phenomenon is counter intuitive because larger colloids which have smaller diffusion constant are expected to remain near the surface during the drying process, leaving the layer of larger colloids on top of smaller colloids. Here we show that the phenomenon is caused by the interaction between the colloids, and can be explained by the diffusion model which accounts for the interaction between the co…
Using numerical simulations, we study the non-equilibrium coarsening dynamics of a binary solvent around spherical colloids in the presence of a temperature gradient. The coarsening dynamics following a temperature quench is studied by solving the coupled modified Cahn-Hilliard-Cook equation and the heat diffusion equation, which describe the concentration profile and the temperature field, respectively. For the temperature field we apply a suitable boundary condition. We observe the formation of circular layers of different phases around the colloid whereas away from the colloid patterns of s…
Understanding the phase behaviour of mixtures continues to pose challenges, even for systems that might be considered "simple". Here we consider a very simple mixture of two colloidal and one non-adsorbing polymer species which can be simplified even further to a size-asymmetrical binary mixture, in which the effective colloid-colloid interactions depend on the polymer concentration. We show that this basic system exhibits surprisingly rich phase behaviour. In particular, we enquire whether such a system features only a liquid-vapor phase separation (as in one-component colloid-polymer mixture…
The performance of graphene oxide(GO)-based materials strongly depends on the lateral size and size distribution of GO nanosheets. Various methods are employed to prepare GO nanosheets with a narrow size distribution. One of the promising method was proposed recently by directionally freezing of a GO aqueous dispersion at a controlled growth rate of the freezing front. We develop a theoretic model of binary colloids suspension, incorporating both the moving freezing boundary and the preferential adsorption of colloidal particles to the ice phase. We numerically solve the coupled diffusion equa…
Fractionation is necessary for self-assembly in multicomponent mixtures. Here, reversible fractionation and crystallization are realized and studied in a two-dimensional binary colloids which is supersaturated by enhancing the attraction between colloidal particles. As a deep and fast supersaturation results in gels with a uniform distribution of binary particles, a gradual quasistatic supersaturating process leads to a two-step crystallization in which small particles and large particles are fractionated as coexisting crystal and liquid phases respectively. Fractionation occurs as well in the…
The self-assembly of binary nanoparticle superlattices from colloidal mixtures is a promising method for the fabrication of complex colloidal co-crystal structures. However, binary mixtures often form amorphous or metastable phases instead of the thermodynamically stable phase. Here we show that in binary mixtures of differently sized spherical particles, an excess of the smaller component can promote -- and, in some cases, may be necessary for -- the self-assembly of a binary co-crystal. Using computer simulations, we identify two mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon. First, excess smal…
Experimental studies of the variation of the mean square displacement (MSD) of a particle in a confined colloid suspension that exhibits density variations on the scale length of the particle diameter are not in agreement with the prediction that the spatial variation in MSD should mimic the spatial variation in density. The predicted behavior is derived from the expectation that the MSD of a particle depends on the system density and the assumption that the force acting on a particle is a point function of position. The experimental data come from studies of the MSDs of particles in narrow ri…
In this article, we demonstrate a method for inducing reversible crystal-to-crystal transitions in binary mixtures of soft colloidal particles. Through a controlled decrease of salinity and increasingly dominating electrostatic interactions, a single sample is shown to reversibly organize into entropic crystals, electrostatic attraction-dominated crystals or aggregated gels, which we quantify using microscopy and image analysis. We furthermore analyze crystalline structures with bond order analysis to discern between two crystal phases. We observe the different phases using a sample holder geo…
We study the non-equilibrium coarsening dynamics of a binary liquid solvent around a colloidal particle in a presence of a time-dependent temperature gradient that emerges after temperature quench of a suitably coated colloid surface. The solvent is maintained at its critical concentration and the colloid is fixed in space. The coarsening patterns near the surface are shown to be strongly dependent on the colloid surface adsorption properties and on the temperature evolution. The temperature gradient alters the morphology of a binary solvent near the surface of a colloid as compared to the coa…
Colloidal particles, which are ubiquitous, have become ideal testing grounds for the structural glass transition (SGT) theories. In these systems glassy behavior is manifested as the density of the particles is increased. Thus, soft colloidal particles with varying degree of softness capture diverse glass forming properties, observed normally in molecular glasses. By performing Brownian dynamics simulations for a binary mixture of micron-sized charged colloidal suspensions, known to form Wigner glasses, we show that by tuning the softness of the potential, achievable by changing the monovalent…
Colloidal gels are a prototypical example of a heterogeneous network solid whose complex properties are governed by thermally-activated dynamics. In this Letter we experimentally establish the connection between the intermittent dynamics of individual particles and their local connectivity. We interpret our experiments with a model that describes single-particle dynamics based on highly cooperative thermal debonding. The model, in quantitative agreement with experiments, provides a microscopic picture for the structural origin of dynamical heterogeneity in colloidal gels and sheds new light on…
A gold-capped Janus particle suspended in a near-critical binary liquid mixture can self-propel under illumination. We have immobilized such a particle in a narrow channel and studied the nonequilibrium dynamics of a binary solvent around it, using experiment and numerical simulations. For the latter we consider both a purely diffusive and a hydrodynamic model. All approaches indicate that the early time dynamics is purely diffusive and characterized by composition layers traveling with a constant speed from the surface of the colloid into the bulk. Subsequently, hydrodynamic effects set in an…
Structural defects are ubiquitous in condensed matter, and not always a nuisance. For example, they underlie phenomena such as Anderson localization and hyperuniformity, and they are now being exploited to engineer novel materials. Here, we show experimentally that the density of structural defects in a 2D binary colloidal crystal can be engineered with a random potential. We generate the random potential using an optical speckle pattern, whose induced forces act strongly on one species of particles (strong particles) and weakly on the other (weak particles). Thus, the strong particles are mor…

We investigate percolation in binary and ternary mixtures of patchy colloidal particles theoretically and using Monte Carlo simulations. Each particle has three identical patches, with distinct species having different types of patch. Theoretically we assume tree-like clusters and calculate the bonding probabilities using Wertheim's first-order perturbation theory for association. For ternary mixtures we find up to eight fundamentally different percolated states. The states differ in terms of the species and pairs of species that have percolated. The strongest gel is a trigel or tricontinuous …

By means of extensive simulations, we investigate concentrated solutions of globular single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs), an emergent class of synthetic soft nano-objects. By increasing the concentration, the SCNPs show a reentrant behaviour in their structural and dynamical correlations, as well as a soft caging regime and weak dynamic heterogeneity. The latter is confirmed by validation of the Stokes-Einstein relation up to concentrations far beyond the overlap density. Therefore SCNPs arise as a new class of soft colloids, exhibiting slow dynamics and actualizing in a real system structural …
Using mesoscopic numerical simulations and analytical theory we investigate the coarsening of the solvent structure around a colloidal particle emerging after a temperature quench of the colloid surface. Qualitative differences in the coarsening mechanisms are found, depending on the composition of the binary liquid mixture forming the solvent and on the adsorption preferences of the colloid. For an adsorptionwise neutral colloid, as function of time the phase being next to its surface alternates. This behavior sets in on the scale of the relaxation time of the solvent and is absent for colloi…
