Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. The ring $R\times R$ can be viewed as an extension of $R$ via the diagonal map $Δ: R \hookrightarrow R\times R$, given by $Δ(r) = (r, r)$ for all $r\in R$. It is shown that, for any $a, b\in R$, the extension $Δ(R)[(a,b)] \subset R\times R$ is a minimal ring extension if and only if the ideal $<a-b>$ is a maximal ideal of $R$. A complete classification of maximal subrings of $R(+)R$ is also given. The minimal ring extension of a von Neumann regular ring $R$ is either a von Neumann regular ring or the idealization $R(+)R/\mathfrak{m}$ where $\mathfrak{m}\in \text{Max}(R)$. If $R\subset T$ is a minimal ring extension and $T$ is an integral domain, then $(R:T) = 0$ if and only if $R$ is a field and $T$ is a minimal field extension of $R$, or $R_J$ is a valuation ring of altitude one and $T_{J}$ is its quotient field.
We derive basic properties of minimal extensions of local rings and their restrictions to subrings. Some applications are included to subrings of truncated polynomial rings.
We consider ring extensions whose set of all subextensions is stable under the formation of sums, the so-called Delta extensions and exhibit new examples of these extensions.
If $R\subseteq S$ is a ring extension of commutative unital rings, the poset $[R,S]$ of $R$-subalgebras of $S$ is called catenarian if it verifies the Jordan-Hölder property. This property has already been studied by Dobbs and Shapiro for finite extensions of fields. We investigate this property for arbitrary ring extensions, showing that many type of extensions are catenarian. We reduce the characterization of catenarian extensions to the case of field extensions, an unsolved question at that time.
We introduce quasi-Prufer extensions of rings in order to relativize the notion of quasi-Prufer domains and to take into account some contexts recently introduced in the literature. We also introduce almost-Prufer ring extensions. Characterizations and properties are given. In particular, we examine the relationship with the finite fibers property.
In this article, we give the explicit minimal free resolution of the associated graded ring of certain affine monomial curves in affine 4-space based on the standard basis theory. As a result, we give the minimal graded free resolution and compute the Hilbert function of the tangent cone of these families.
We study the transfer of (co)silting objects in derived categories of module categories via the extension functors induced by a morphism of commutative rings. It is proved that the extension functors preserve (co)silting objects of (co)finite type. In many cases the bounded silting property descends along faithfully flat ring extensions. In particular, the notion of bounded silting complex is Zariski local.
We describe the immediate extensions of a one dimensional valuation ring $V$ which could be embedded in some separation of a ultrapower of $V$ with respect to a certain ultrafilter. For such extensions holds a kind of Artin's approximation.
Let $R\rightarrow S$ be an arbitrary ring extension of Noetherian rings. In this article we study the behaviour of Zariski closedness of the support of Lyubeznik functors $\mathrm{T}$, when the ring extension $R\rightarrow S$ is namely `flat', `faithfully flat', `pure' and lastly `cyclically pure'. We show that the Zariski closedness of the support comes down from extended ring to the base ring for faithfully flat, pure and finally for cyclically pure ring extensions. Lastly, we focus on a special case of pure extension i.e. when $R$ is a direct summand of $S$ and we compare the sets $\mathrm{…
We give a comparison between the Poincare series of two monomial rings: $R=A/I$ and $R_q=A/I_q$ where $I_q$ is a monomial ideal generated by the $q$'th power of monomial generators of $I$. We compute the Poincare series for a class of monomial rings with minimal Taylor resolution. The paper was produced during Pragmatic 2011.
This paper contributes to the study of homological aspects of trivial ring extensions (also called Nagata idealizations). Namely, we investigate the transfer of the notion of (Matlis') semi-regular ring (also known as IF-ring) along with related concepts, such as coherence, in trivial ring extensions issued from integral domains. All along the paper, we put the new results in use to enrich the literature with new families of examples subject to semi-regularity.
We study the behaviour of the finiteness of the set of associated primes of local cohomology modules, more generally of Lyubeznik functors, under various ring extensions. At first, we review the results for flat and faithfully flat extensions and we present new applications of them. Then, we focus how the finiteness property of the set of associated primes of local cohomology modules and Lyubeznik functors is transferred from extended ring to the base ring of pure and cyclically pure ring extensions. We show that finiteness property can be transferred from a ring to its pure local subring and …
We introduce the finitistic extension degree of a ring and investigate rings for which it is finite. The Auslander-Reiten Conjecture is proved for rings of finite finitistic extension degree and these rings are also shown to have finite finitistic dimension. We apply these results to better understand a gen- eralized version of the Auslander-Reiten Condition for Gorenstein rings. We also record how the finitistic extension degree behaves with respect to many change of ring procedures that arise frequently in the commutative setting.
The paper intends to apply the properties of Prüfer extensions, investigated in the Knebusch-Zhang book, to ring extensions $R\subseteq S$. The integral closure $\overline R$ of $R$ in $S$ is shown to be the intersection of all $T\in [R,S]$, such that $T\subseteq S$ is Prüfer. We are then able to establish an avoidance lemma for integrally closed subextensions. Rings of sections of the affine scheme defined by $R$ provide results on $S$-regular ideals. Some results on pullbacks characterizations of Prüfer extensions are given. We introduce locally strong divisors, examining the properties of s…
For any commutative ring $A$ we introduce a generalization of $S$-noetherian rings using a hereditary torsion theory $σ$ instead of a multiplicatively closed subset $S\subseteq{A}$. It is proved that if $A$ is a totally $σ$-noetherian ring, then $σ$ is of finite type, and that totally $σ$-noetherian is a local property.
Let $G$ be a subgroup of the automorphism group of a commutative ring with identity $T$. Let $R$ be a subring of $T$ such that $R$ is invariant under the action by $G$. We show $R^G\subset T^G$ is a minimal ring extension whenever $R\subset T$ is a minimal extension under various assumptions. Of the two types of minimal ring extensions, integral and integrally closed, both of these properties are passed from $R\subset T$ to $R^G\subset T^G$. An integrally closed minimal ring extension is a flat epimorphic extension as well as a normal pair. We show each of these properties also pass from $R\su…
The celebrated Auslander-Reiten Conjecture, on the vanishing of self extensions of a module, is one of the long-standing conjectures in ring theory. Although it is still open, there are several results in the literature that establish the conjecture over Gorenstein rings under certain conditions. The purpose of this article is to obtain extensions of such results over Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit canonical modules. In particular, our main result recovers theorems of Araya, and Ono and Yoshino simultaneously.
We characterize extensions of commutative rings $R \subseteq S$ whose sets of subextensions $[R,S]$ are finite ({\it i.e.} $R\subseteq S$ has the FIP property) and are Boolean lattices, that we call Boolean FIP extensions. Some characterizations involve ``factorial" properties of the poset $[R,S]$. A non trivial result is that each subextension of a Boolean FIP extension is simple (i.e. $R \subseteq S$ is a simple pair).
The paper deals with ring extensions $R\subseteq S$ and their lattices $[R,S]$ of subextensions and is mainly devoted to FCP extensions (extensions whose lattices are Artinian and Noetherian). The object of the paper is the introduction and the study of elements of the lattices that split in some sense ring extensions. The reason why is that this splitting was used in earlier paper without their common nature being recognized. There are some favorable cases allowing to build splitters, mainly when we are dealing with $\mathcal B$-extensions, for example integral extensions. Integral closures a…
For any commutative ring $A$ we introduce a generalization of $S$--artinian rings using a hereditary torsion theory $σ$ instead of a multiplicative closed subset $S\subseteq{A}$. It is proved that if $A$ is a totally $σ$--artinian ring, then $σ$ must be of finite type, and $A$ is totally $σ$--noetherian.
Over an arbitrary commutative ring, correspondences among three sets, the set of trace ideals, the set of stable ideals, and the set of birational extensions of the base ring, are studied. The correspondences are well-behaved, if the base ring is a Gorenstein ring of dimension one. It is shown that with one extremal exception, the surjectivity of one of the correspondences characterizes the Gorenstein property of the base ring, provided it is a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension one. Over a commutative Noetherian ring, a characterization of modules in which every submodule is a trace modul…

Let $A\subseteq B$ be a ring extension and $\mathcal{G}$ be a set of $A$-submodules of $B$. We introduce a class of closure operations on $\mathcal{G}$ (which we call \emph{multiplicative operations on $(A,B,\mathcal{G})$}) that generalizes the classes of star, semistar and semiprime operations. We study how the set $\mathrm{Mult}(A,B,\mathcal{G})$ of these closure operations vary when $A$, $B$ or $\mathcal{G}$ vary, and how $\mathrm{Mult}(A,B,\mathcal{G})$ behave under ring homomorphisms. As an application, we show how to reduce the study of star operations on analytically unramified one-dime…
We characterize extensions of commutative rings $R\subset S$ such that $R\subset T$ is minimal for each $R$-subalgebra $T$ of $S$ with $T\neq R,S$. This property is equivalent to $R\subset S$ has length 2. Such extensions are either pointwise minimal or simple. We are able to compute the number of subextensions of $R\subset S$. Besides commutative algebra considerations, our main result is a consequence of the recently introduced by van Hoeij et al. concept of principal subfields of a finite separable field extension. As a corollary of this paper, we get that simple extensions of length 2 have…
We construct a minimal free resolution of the semigroup ring k[C] in terms of minimal resolutions of k[A] and k[B] when <C> is a numerical semigroup obtained by gluing two numerical semigroups <A> and <B>. Using our explicit construction, we compute the Betti numbers, graded Betti numbers, regularity and Hilbert series of k[C], and prove that the minimal free resolution of k[C] has a differential graded algebra structure provided the resolutions of k[A] and k[B] possess them. We discuss the consequences of our results in small embedding dimensions. Finally, we give an extension of our main res…
Let $f:A\rightarrow B$ be a ring homomorphism and let $J$ be an ideal of $B$. In this paper, we characterize $R\bowtie^fJ$ to be Von Neumann regular ring and SFT ring, respectively.
The main goal of this paper is to study some properties of an extension of valuations from classical invariants. More specifically, we consider a valued field $(K,ν)$ and an extension $ω$ of $ν$ to a finite extension $L$ of $K$. Then we study when the valuation ring of $ω$ is essentially finitely generated over the valuation ring of $ν$. We present a necessary condition in terms of classic invariants of the extension by Hagen Knaf and show that in some particular cases, this condition is also sufficient. We also study when the corresponding extension of graded algebras is finitely generated. F…
In this paper we discuss stable forms of extensions of algebraic local rings along a valuation in all dimensions over a field k of characteristic zero, and generalize a formula of Ghezzi, Hà and Kashcheyeva describing the extension of associated graded rings along the valuation for stable extensions of regular algebraic local rings of dimension two to arbitrary ground fields k of characteristic zero. We discuss the failure of this result in positive characteristic.
Let $B$ be a reduced local (Noetherian) ring with maximal ideal $M$. Suppose that $B$ contains the rationals, $B/M$ is uncountable and $|B| = |B/M|$. Let the minimal prime ideals of $B$ be partitioned into $m \geq 1$ subcollections $C_1, \ldots ,C_m$. We show that there is a reduced local ring $S \subseteq B$ with maximal ideal $S \cap M$ such that the completion of $S$ with respect to its maximal ideal is isomorphic to the completion of $B$ with respect to its maximal ideal and such that, if $P$ and $Q$ are prime ideals of $B$, then $P \cap S = Q \cap S$ if and only if $P$ and $Q$ are in $C_i…
The notion of trivial extension of a ring by a module has been extensively studied and used in ring theory as well as in various other areas of research like cohomology theory, representation theory, category theory and homological algebra. In this paper we extend this classical ring construction by associating a ring to a ring $R$ and a family $M=(M_i)_{i=1}^{n}$ of $n$ $R$-modules for a given integer $n\geq 1$. We call this new ring construction an $n$-trivial extension of $R$ by $M$. In particular, the classical trivial extension will be just the $1$-trivial extension. Thus we generalize se…
Let A be a commutative ring and E a non-zero A-module. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the trivial ring extension R of A by E to be either arithmetical or Gaussian. The possibility for R to be B{é}zout is also studied, but a response is only given in the case where pSpec A (a quotient space of Spec} A) is totally disconnected. Trivial ring extensions which are fqp-rings are characterized only in the local case. To get a general result we intoduce the class of fqf-rings satisfying a weaker property than fqp-ring. Moreover, it is proven that the finitistic weak dimension of a f…
In this paper we consider the question of when the associated graded ring along a valuation, ${\rm gr}_{ν^*}(S)$, is a finite ${\rm gr}_{ν^*}(R)$-module, where $S$ is a normal local ring which lies over a normal local ring $R$ and $ν^*$ is a valuation of the quotient field of $S$ which dominates $S$. We obtain a very general result in equicharacteristic zero in Theorem 1.5. We also obtain general results for unramified extensions of excellent local rings in Proposition 1.7.
We refine a well-known theorem of Auslander and Reiten about the extension closedness of n-th syzygies over noether algebras. Applying it, we obtain the converse of a celebrated theorem of Evans and Griffith on Serre's condition (S_n) and the local Gorensteiness of a commutative ring in height less than n. This especially extends a recent result of Araya and Iima concerning a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with canonical module to an arbitrary local ring.
Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. In this paper we study the structure of Ulrich $R$-modules mainly in the case where R has minimal multiplicity. We explore generation of Ulrich R-modules, and clarify when the Ulrich R-modules are precisely the syzygies of maximal Cohen-Macaulay R-modules. We also investigate the structure of Ulrich R-modules as an exact category.
