We study the quantum phase transition upon variation of the fermionic density $ν$ in a solvable model with random Yukawa interactions between $N$ bosons and $M$ fermions, dubbed the Yukawa-SYK model. We show that there are two distinct phases in the model: an incompressible state with gapped excitations and an exotic quantum-critical, non-Fermi liquid state with exponents varying with $ν$. We show analytically and numerically that the quantum phase transition between these two states is first-order, as for some range of $ν$ the NFL state has a negative compressibility. In the limit $N/M\to \infty$ the first-order transition gets weaker and asymptotically becomes second-order, with an exotic quantum-critical behavior. We show that fermions and bosons display highly unconventional spectral behavior in the transition region.

We study a model of $N$ fermions in a quantum dot, coupled to $M$ bosons by a disorder-induced complex Yukawa coupling (Yukawa-SYK model), in order to explore the interplay between non-Fermi liquid and superconductivity in a strongly coupled, (quantum-)critical environment. We analyze the phase diagram of the model for an arbitrary complex interaction and arbitrary ratio of $N/M$, with special focus on the two regimes of non-Fermi-liquid behavior: an SYK-like behavior with a power-law frequency dependence of the fermionic self-energy and an impurity-like behavior with frequency independent sel…
Non-Fermi liquids (NFL) are a class of strongly interacting gapless fermionic systems without long-lived quasiparticle excitations. An important group of NFL model features itinerant fermions coupled to soft bosonic fluctuations near a quantum-critical point (QCP), and are widely believed to capture the essential physics of many unconventional superconductors. However numerically the direct observation of a canonical NFL behavior in such systems, characterized by a power-law form in the Green's function, has been elusive. Here we consider a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK)-like model with random Yukawa…
The interplay of non-Fermi liquid and superconductivity born out of strong dynamical interactions is at the heart of the physics of unconventional superconductivity. As a solvable platform of the strongly correlated superconductors, we study the pairing instabilities of the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (Yukawa-SYK) model, which describes spin-1/2 fermions coupled to bosons by the random, all-to-all, spin-independent and dependent Yukawa interactions. In contrast to the previously studied models, the random Yukawa couplings are sampled from a collection of Gaussian ensembles whose variances follow …

We analyze the phase diagram of the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, which describes complex fermions randomly interacting with real bosons via a Yukawa coupling, at finite temperatures and varying fermion density. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Research 2, 033084 (2020)] it has been shown that, upon varying filling or chemical potential, there exists a first-order quantum phase transition between a non-Fermi liquid (nFL) phase and an insulating phase. Here we show that in such a model with time-reversal symmetry this quantum phase transition is preempted by a pairing phase that develops as a low…

We study chaotic-integrable transition and the nature of quantum chaos in SYK model with chemical potential. We use a novel numerical technique to calculate the partition function explicitly. We show the phase transition in the presence of large chemical potential. We also show that a mass-like term consisting of two fermion random interaction (q=2 SYK term) does not give rise to a sharp transition. We find that turning on the chemical potential suppresses the Lyapunov exponent in the chaotic phase exponentially.
We address the key open problem of a higher dimensional generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We construct a model on a lattice of SYK dots with non-random intersite hopping. The crucial feature of the resulting band dispersion is the presence of a Lifshitz point where two bands touch with a tunable powerlaw divergent density of states (DOS). For a certain regime of the powerlaw exponent, we obtain a new class of interaction-dominated non-Fermi liquid (NFL) states, which exhibits exciting features such as a zero-temperature scaling symmetry, an emergent (approximate) time repara…
We study a two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with complex couplings, and identify a low temperature transition to a gapped phase characterized by a constant in temperature free energy. This transition is observed without introducing a coupling between the two sites, and only appears after ensemble average over the complex couplings. We propose a gravity interpretation of these results by constructing an explicit solution of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity with matter: a two-dimensional Euclidean wormhole whose geometry is the double trumpet. This solution is sustained by imaginary sources …
Superconductivity is abundant near quantum-critical points, where fluctuations suppress the formation of Fermi liquid quasiparticles and the BCS theory no longer applies. Two very distinct approaches have been developed to address this issue: quantum-critical Eliashberg theory and holographic superconductivity. The former includes a strongly retarded pairing interaction of ill-defined fermions, the latter is rooted in the duality of quantum field theory and gravity theory. We demonstrate that both are different perspectives of the same theory. We derive holographic superconductivity in form of…
We study four coupled SYK models and nearly AdS$_2$ gravities. In the SYK model side, we construct a model that couples two copies of two coupled SYK models. In nearly AdS$_2$ gravity side, we entangle matter fields in two copies of traversable wormholes. In both cases, the systems show first order phase transitions at zero temperature by changing couplings, which is understood as the exchange of traversable wormhole configurations. In nearly AdS$_2$ gravity cases, by exchanging the role of space and time the wormholes are interpreted as bra-ket wormholes. In Lorentzian signature, these bra-ke…
We study a putative (strange) metal-to-insulator transition in a granular array of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) quantum dots, each occupied by a large number N>>1 of charge-carrying fermions. Extending the previous studies we complement the SYK couplings by the physically relevant Coulomb interactions and focus on the effects of charge fluctuations, evaluating the conductivity and density of states. The latter were found to demonstrate marked changes of behavior when the effective inter-site tunneling becomes comparable to the renormalized Coulomb energy, thus signifying the transition in quest…
We study the thermalization, after sudden and slow quenches, of an interacting model having a quantum phase transition from a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) non-Fermi liquid (NFL) to a Fermi liquid (FL). The model has SYK fermions coupled to non-interacting lead fermions and can be realized in a graphene flake connected to external leads. After a sudden quench to the NFL, a thermal state is reached rapidly via collapse-revival oscillations of the quasiparticle residue of the lead fermions. In contrast, the quench to the FL, across the NFL-FL transition, leads to multiple prethermal regimes and much s…
Recent work has shown that coupling two identical Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models can realize a phase of matter that is holographically dual to an eternal traversable wormhole. This phase supports revival oscillations between two quantum chaotic systems that can be interpreted as information traversing the wormhole. Here we generalize these ideas to a pair of coupled SYK models with complex fermions that respect a global U(1) charge symmetry. Such models show richer behavior than conventional SYK models with Majorana fermions and may be easier to realize experimentally. We consider two differen…
It has been recently proposed by Maldacena and Qi that an eternal traversable wormhole in a two dimensional Anti de Sitter space (${\rm AdS}_2$) is the gravity dual of the low temperature limit of two Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models coupled by a relevant interaction (which we will refer to as spin operator). In this paper, we study spectral and eigenstate properties of this coupled SYK model. We have found that level statistics in the tail of the spectrum, and for a sufficiently weak coupling, shows substantial deviations from random matrix theory which suggests that traversable wormholes are n…
We show that the low temperature phase of a conjugate pair of uncoupled, quantum chaotic, nonhermitian systems such as the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model or the Ginibre ensemble of random matrices are dominated by replica symmetry breaking configurations with a nearly flat free energy that terminates in a first order phase transition. In the case of the SYK model, we show explicitly that the spectrum of the effective replica theory has a gap. These features are strikingly similar to those induced by wormholes in the gravity path integral which suggests a close relation between both configuratio…
We study the onset of RMT dynamics in the mass-deformed SYK model (i.e. an SYK model deformed by a quadratic random interaction) in terms of the strength of the quadratic deformation. We use as chaos probes both the connected unfolded Spectral Form Factor (SFF) as well as the Gaussian-filtered SFF, which has been recently introduced in the literature. We show that they detect the chaotic/integrable transition of the mass-deformed SYK model at different values of the mass deformation: the Gaussian-filtered SFF sees the transition for large values of the mass deformation; the connected unfolded …
We investigate the charged $q/2$-body interacting Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in the grand-canonical ensemble. By treating $q$ as a large parameter, we are able to analytically study its phase diagram. By varying the chemical potential or temperature, we find that the system undergoes a phase transition between low and high entropies, in the maximally chaotic regime. A similar transition in entropy is seen in charged AdS black holes transitioning between a large and small event horizon. Approaching zero temperature, we find a first-order chaotic-to-non-chaotic quantum phase transition, where…
We investigate chaotic to integrable transition in two types of hybrid SYK models which contain both $ q=4 $ SYK with interaction $ J $ and $ q=2 $ SYK with an interaction $ K $ in type-I or $(q=2)^2$ SYK with an interaction $ \sqrt{K} $ in type-II. These models include hybrid Majorana fermion, complex fermion and bosonic SYK. For the Majorana fermion case, we discuss both $ N $ even and $ N $ odd case. We make exact symmetry analysis on the possible symmetry class of both types of hybrid SYK in the 10 fold way by Random Matrix Theory (RMT) and also work out the degeneracy of each energy level…
We construct Brownian Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) chains subjected to continuous monitoring and explore possible entanglement phase transitions therein. We analytically derive the effective action in the large-$N$ limit and show that an entanglement transition is caused by the symmetry breaking in the enlarged replica space. In the noninteracting case with SYK$_2$ chains, the model features a continuous $O(2)$ symmetry between two replicas and a transition corresponding to spontaneous breaking of that symmetry upon varying the measurement rate. In the symmetry broken phase at low measurement rate,…
Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, which describes $N$ randomly interacting Majorana fermions in 0+1 dimension, is found to be an solvable UV-complete toy model for holographic duality in nearly AdS$_2$ dilaton gravity. Ref. [1] proposed a modified model by coupling two identical SYK models, which at low-energy limit is dual to a global AdS$_2$ geometry. This geometry is an "eternal wormhole" because the two boundaries are causally connected. Increasing the temperature drives a Hawking-Page like transition from the eternal wormhole geometry to two disconnected black holes with coupled matter field…

We study a dual flavor fermion model where each of the flavors form a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) system with arbitrary and possibly distinct $q$-body interactions. The crucial new element is an arbitrary all-to-all $r$-body interaction between the two flavors. At high temperatures the model shows a strange metal phase where both flavors are gapless, similar to the usual single flavor SYK model. Upon reducing temperature, the coupled system undergoes phase transitions to previously unseen phases - first, a strange half metal (SHM) phase where one flavor remains a strange metal while the other is g…
We review our recent work [arXiv:2009.10759] where we studied the chaotic property of the two coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev systems exhibiting a Hawking-Page like phase transition. By computing the out-of-time-ordered correlator in the large N limit by using the bilocal field formalism, we found that the chaos exponent of this model shows a discontinuous fall-off at the phase transition temperature. Hence in this model the Hawking-Page like transition is correlated with a transition in chaoticity, as expected from the relation between a black hole geometry and the chaotic behavior in the dual fiel…
We consider granular quantum matter defined by Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) dots coupled via random one-body hopping. Within the framework of Schwarzian field theory, we identify a zero temperature quantum phase transition between an insulating phase at weak and a metallic phase at strong hopping. The critical hopping strength scales inversely with the number of degrees of freedom on the dots. The increase of temperature out of either phase induces a crossover into a regime of strange metallic behavior.
We show that the quantum critical point (QCP) between a diffusive metal and ferromagnetic (or antiferromagnetic) phases in the SYK chain has a gravitational description corresponding to the double-trace deformation in an AdS$_2$ chain. Specifically, by studying a double-trace deformation of a $Z_2$ scalar in an AdS$_2$ chain where the $Z_2$ scalar is dual to the order parameter in the SYK chain, we find that the susceptibility and renormalization group equation describing the QCP in the SYK chain can be exactly reproduced in the holographic model. Our results suggest that the infrared geometry…
We study various aspects of the mass deformed SYK model which can escape the interiors of pure boundary state black holes. SYK boundary states are given by a simple local boundary condition on the Majorana fermions and then evolved in Euclidean time in the SYK Hamiltonian. We study the ground state of this mass deformed SYK model in detail. We also use SYK boundary states as a variational approximation to the ground state of the mass deformed SYK model. We compare variational approximation with the exact ground state results and they showed a good agreement. We also study the time evolution of…
We determine the global renormalization group (RG) flow of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. This flow allows for an understanding of the surprising role of critical slowing down at a quantum first-order transition in strongly-correlated electronic systems. From a simple truncation of the infinite hierarchy of the exact functional RG flow equations we identify several fixed points: Apart from a stable fixed point, associated with the celebrated non-Fermi liquid state of the model, we find another stable fixed point related to an integer-valence state. These stable fixed points are separated b…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a concrete solvable model to study non-Fermi liquid properties, holographic duality and maximally chaotic behavior. In this work, we consider a generalization of the SYK model that contains two SYK models with different number of Majorana modes coupled by quadratic terms. This model is also solvable, and the solution shows a zero-temperature quantum phase transition between two non-Fermi liquid chaotic phases. This phase transition is driven by tuning the ratio of two mode numbers, and a Fermi liquid non-chaotic phase sits at the critical point with equal m…
Electronic transport in nano-structures, such as long molecules or 2D exfoliated flakes, often goes through a nearly degenerate set of single-particle orbitals. Here we show that in such cases a conspiracy of the narrow band and strong e-e interactions may stabilize a non Fermi liquid phase in the universality class of the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Focusing on signatures in quantum transport, we demonstrate the existence of anomalous power laws in the temperature dependent conductance, including algebraic scaling $T^{3/2}$ in the inelastic cotunneling channel, separated from the c…

We study $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with complex fermions at non-zero background charge. Motivated by multi-charge supersymmetric black holes, we propose a new $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK model with multiple $U(1)$ symmetries, integer charges, and a non-vanishing supersymmetric index, realizing features not present in known SYK models. In both models, a conformal solution with a super-Schwarzian mode emerges at low temperatures, signalling the appearance of nearly AdS$_2$/BPS physics. However, in contrast to complex SYK, the fermion scaling dimension depends on the b…
We study a series of perturbations on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We show that the chaotic non-Fermi liquid phase described by the ordinary $q = 4$ SYK model has marginally relevant/irrelevant (depending on the sign of the coupling constants) four-fermion perturbations allowed by symmetry. Changing the sign of one of these four-fermion perturbations leads to a continuous chaotic-nonchaotic quantum phase transition of the system accompanied by a spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. Starting with the SYK$_q$ model with a $q-$fermion interaction, similar perturbations can lead to a…
We propose an extension of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model that exhibits a quantum phase transition from the previously identified non-Fermi liquid fixed point to a Fermi liquid like state, while still allowing an exact solution in a suitable large $N$ limit. The extended model involves coupling the interacting $N$-site SYK model to a new set of $pN$ peripheral sites with only quadratic hopping terms between them. The conformal fixed point of the SYK model remains a stable low energy phase below a critical ratio of peripheral sites $p<p_c(n)$ that depends on the fermion filling $n$. The scra…
In this paper we study the chaos exponent, the exponential growth rate of the out-of-time-ordered four point functions, in a two coupled SYK models which exhibits a first order phase transition between the high temperature black hole phase and the low temperature gapped phase interpreted as a traversable wormhole. We see that as the temperature decreases the chaos exponent exhibits a discontinuous fall-off from the value of order the universal bound $2π/β$ at the critical temperature of the phase transition, which is consistent with the expected relation between black holes and strong chaos. I…
We compute the phase diagram of a $\text{U}(N)^{2}\times\text{O}(D)$ invariant fermionic planar matrix quantum mechanics [equivalently tensor or complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models] in the new large $D$ limit, dominated by melonic graphs. The Schwinger-Dyson equations can have two solutions describing either a high entropy, SYK black-hole-like phase, or a low entropy one with trivial IR behavior. In the strongly coupled region of the mass-temperature plane, there is a line of first order phase transitions between the high and low entropy phases. This line terminates at a new critical point …
Many aspects of many-body localization (MBL) transitions remain elusive so far. Here, we propose a higher-dimensional generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and show that it exhibits a MBL transition. The model on a bipartite lattice has $N$ Majorana fermions with SYK interactions on each site of the $A$ sublattice and $M$ free Majorana fermions on each site the of $B$ sublattice, where $N$ and $M$ are large and finite. For $r$$\equiv$$M/N\!<\!r_c$=1, it describes a diffusive metal exhibiting maximal chaos. Remarkably, its diffusive constant $D$ vanishes [$D$$\propto$$ (r_c-r)^{1/…
We study the generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model to a $1+1$ dimensional chiral SYK model of $N$ flavors of right-moving chiral Majorana fermions with all-to-all random 4-fermion interactions. The interactions in this model are exactly marginal, leading to an exact scaling symmetry. We show the Schwinger-Dyson equation of this model in the large $N$ limit is exactly solvable. In addition, we show this model is integrable for small $N\le6$ by bosonization. Surprisingly, the two point function in the large $N$ limit has exactly the same form as that for $N=4$, although the four po…

We study the thermodynamic properties of a two-site coupled complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in the large $N$ limit by solving the saddle-point Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equations. We find that its phase diagram is richer than in the Majorana case. In the grand canonical ensemble, we identify a region of small chemical potential, and weak coupling between the two SYKs, for which two first order thermodynamic phase transitions occur as a function of temperature. First, we observe a transition from a cold wormhole phase to an intermediate phase that may correspond to a charged wormhole. For a hi…
We propose a simple solvable variant of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model which displays a quantum phase transition from a fast-scrambling non-Fermi liquid to disordered Fermi liquid. Like the canonical SYK model, our variant involves a single species of Majorana fermions connected by all-to-all random four-fermion interactions. The phase transition is driven by a random two-fermion term added to the Hamiltonian whose structure is inspired by proposed solid-state realizations of the SYK model. Analytic expressions for the saddle point solutions at large number $N$ of fermions are obtained and …
We show that a random interacting model exhibits solvable non-Fermi liquid behavior and exotic pairing behavior. This model, dubbed as the Yukawa-SYK model, describes the random Yukawa coupling between $M$ quantum dots each hosting $N$ flavors of fermions and $N^2$ bosons that self-tunes to criticality at low energies. The diagrammatic expansion is controlled by $1/MN$, and the results become exact in a large-$M$, large-$N$ limit. We find that pairing only develops within a region of the $(M,N)$ plane --- even though the pairing interaction is strongly attractive, the incoherence of the fermio…
