Electronic transport in nano-structures, such as long molecules or 2D exfoliated flakes, often goes through a nearly degenerate set of single-particle orbitals. Here we show that in such cases a conspiracy of the narrow band and strong e-e interactions may stabilize a non Fermi liquid phase in the universality class of the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Focusing on signatures in quantum transport, we demonstrate the existence of anomalous power laws in the temperature dependent conductance, including algebraic scaling $T^{3/2}$ in the inelastic cotunneling channel, separated from the conventional Fermi liquid $T^2$ scaling via a quantum phase transition. The relatively robust conditions under which these results are obtained indicate that the SYK non Fermi liquid universality class might be not as exotic as previously thought.
We study the stability of the SYK$_4$ model with a large but finite number of fermions $N$ with respect to a perturbation, quadratic in fermionic operators. We develop analytic perturbation theory in the amplitude of the SYK$_2$ perturbation and demonstrate the stability of the SYK$_4$ infra-red asymptotic behavior characterized by a Green function $G(τ) \propto 1/τ^{3/2} $, with respect to weak perturbation. This result is supported by exact numerical diagonalization. Our results open the way to build a theory of non-Fermi-liquid states of strongly interacting fermions.
We address the key open problem of a higher dimensional generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We construct a model on a lattice of SYK dots with non-random intersite hopping. The crucial feature of the resulting band dispersion is the presence of a Lifshitz point where two bands touch with a tunable powerlaw divergent density of states (DOS). For a certain regime of the powerlaw exponent, we obtain a new class of interaction-dominated non-Fermi liquid (NFL) states, which exhibits exciting features such as a zero-temperature scaling symmetry, an emergent (approximate) time repara…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a concrete model for non-Fermi Liquid with maximally chaotic behavior in $0+1$-$d$. In order to gain some insights into real materials in higher dimensions where fermions could hop between different sites, here we consider coupling a SYK lattice by a constant hopping. We call this dispersive SYK model. Focusing on $1+1$-$d$ homogeneous hopping, by either tuning temperature or the relative strength of random interaction (hopping) and constant hopping, we find a crossover between a dispersive metal to an incoherent metal, where dynamic exponent $z$ changes fr…
We study the dynamical decoherence of a qubit weakly coupled to a two-body random interaction model (TBRIM) describing a quantum dot of interacting fermions or the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) black hole model. We determine the rates of qubit relaxation and dephasing for regimes of dynamical thermalization of the quantum dot or of quantum chaos in the SYK model. These rates are found to correspond to the Fermi golden rule and quantum Zeno regimes depending on the qubit-fermion coupling strength. An unusual regime is found where these rates are practically independent of TBRIM parameters. We push fo…
We study the quantum phase transition upon variation of the fermionic density $ν$ in a solvable model with random Yukawa interactions between $N$ bosons and $M$ fermions, dubbed the Yukawa-SYK model. We show that there are two distinct phases in the model: an incompressible state with gapped excitations and an exotic quantum-critical, non-Fermi liquid state with exponents varying with $ν$. We show analytically and numerically that the quantum phase transition between these two states is first-order, as for some range of $ν$ the NFL state has a negative compressibility. In the limit $N/M\to \in…
We study the thermalization, after sudden and slow quenches, of an interacting model having a quantum phase transition from a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) non-Fermi liquid (NFL) to a Fermi liquid (FL). The model has SYK fermions coupled to non-interacting lead fermions and can be realized in a graphene flake connected to external leads. After a sudden quench to the NFL, a thermal state is reached rapidly via collapse-revival oscillations of the quasiparticle residue of the lead fermions. In contrast, the quench to the FL, across the NFL-FL transition, leads to multiple prethermal regimes and much s…
We analyze the error correcting properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, with errors that correspond to erasures of subsets of fermions. We study the limit where the number of fermions erased is large but small compared to the total number of fermions. We compute the price of the quantum error correcting code, defined as the number of physical qubits needed to reconstruct whether a given operator has been acted upon the thermal state or not. By thinking about reconstruction via quantum teleportation, we argue for a bound that relates the price to the ordinary operator size in systems that di…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes Majorana fermions with random interaction, which displays many interesting properties such as non-Fermi liquid behavior, quantum chaos, emergent conformal symmetry and holographic duality. Here we consider a SYK model or a chain of SYK models with $N$ Majorana fermion modes coupled to another SYK model with $N^2$ Majorana fermion modes, in which the latter has many more degrees of freedom and plays the role as a thermal bath. For a single SYK model coupled to the thermal bath, we show that although the Lyapunov exponent is still proportional to tempe…
We study a series of perturbations on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We show that the chaotic non-Fermi liquid phase described by the ordinary $q = 4$ SYK model has marginally relevant/irrelevant (depending on the sign of the coupling constants) four-fermion perturbations allowed by symmetry. Changing the sign of one of these four-fermion perturbations leads to a continuous chaotic-nonchaotic quantum phase transition of the system accompanied by a spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. Starting with the SYK$_q$ model with a $q-$fermion interaction, similar perturbations can lead to a…
The tractability of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model at large $N$ limit makes it ideal to theoretically study its chaotic non-Fermi liquid behavior and holographic duality properties. We show that the complex SYK Hamiltonian emerges from a system of spinless itinerant fermions in an optical Kagome lattice with a strong disorder. We discuss the regimes supporting flat band spectra in a Kagome lattice, where the system can be non-dispersive. Random interaction between non-dispersive fermions is induced due to randomly distributed immobile impurities in the optical lattice, that exclude the pres…
The SYK model: fermions with a $q$-body, Gaussian-random, all-to-all interaction, is the first of a fascinating new class of solvable large $N$ models. We generalize SYK to include $f$ flavors of fermions, each occupying $N_a$ sites and appearing with a $q_a$ order in the interaction. Like SYK, this entire class of models generically has an infrared fixed point. We compute the infrared dimensions of the fermions, and the spectrum of singlet bilinear operators. We show that there is always a dimension-two operator in the spectrum, which implies that, like in SYK, there is breaking of conformal …
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a quantum mechanical model of fermions interacting with $q$-body random couplings. For $q=2$, it describes free particles, and is non-chaotic in the many-body sense, while for $q>2$ it is strongly interacting and exhibits many-body chaos. In this work we study the entanglement entropy (EE) of the SYK$q$ models, for a bipartition of $N$ real or complex fermions into subsystems containing $2m$ real/$m$ complex fermions and $N-2m$/$N-m$ fermions in the remainder. For the free model SYK$2$, we obtain an analytic expression for the EE, derived from the $β$-Jacob…
We study an array of strongly correlated quantum dots of complex SYK type and account for the effects of quadratic terms added to the SYK Hamiltonian; both local terms and inter-dot tunneling are considered in the non-Fermi-liquid temperature range $T \gg T_{FL}$. We take into account soft-mode fluctuations and demonstrate their relevance for physical observables. Electric $σ(ω,p)$ and thermal $κ(ω,p)$ conductivities are calculated as functions of frequency and momentum for arbitrary values of the particle-hole asymmetry parameter $\mathcal{E}$. At low-frequencies $ω\ll T$ we find the Lorenz r…
We study chaotic-integrable transition and the nature of quantum chaos in SYK model with chemical potential. We use a novel numerical technique to calculate the partition function explicitly. We show the phase transition in the presence of large chemical potential. We also show that a mass-like term consisting of two fermion random interaction (q=2 SYK term) does not give rise to a sharp transition. We find that turning on the chemical potential suppresses the Lyapunov exponent in the chaotic phase exponentially.
Inspired by the recent interest in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model we study a class of multi-flavored one- and two-band fermion systems with no bare dispersion. In contrast to the previous work on the SYK model that would routinely assume spatial locality, thus unequivocally arriving at the so-called 'locally-critical' scenario, we seek to attain a spatially-dispersing 'globally-SYK' behavior. To that end, a variety of the Lorentz-(non)invariant space-and/or-time dependent algebraically decaying interaction functions is considered and some of the thermodynamic and transport properties of suc…
Recent work has shown that coupling two identical Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models can realize a phase of matter that is holographically dual to an eternal traversable wormhole. This phase supports revival oscillations between two quantum chaotic systems that can be interpreted as information traversing the wormhole. Here we generalize these ideas to a pair of coupled SYK models with complex fermions that respect a global U(1) charge symmetry. Such models show richer behavior than conventional SYK models with Majorana fermions and may be easier to realize experimentally. We consider two differen…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes interacting fermionic zero modes in zero spatial dimensions, e.g. quantum dot, with interactions strong enough to completely washout quasiparticle excitations in the infrared. In this paper, we consider the complex-valued SYK model at initial temperature $T$ and chemical potential $μ$ coupled to a large reservoir by a quench at time $t=0$. The reservoir is kept at zero temperature and charge neutrality. We find that the dynamics of the discharging process of the SYK quantum dot reveals a distinctive characteristic of the SYK non-Fermi liquid (nFl) st…
The pairing of two electrons on a Fermi surface due to an infinitesimal attraction between them always results in a superconducting instability at zero temperature ($T=0$). The equivalent question of pairing instability on a Luttinger surface (LS) -- a contour of zeros of the propagator -- instead leads to a quantum critical point (QCP) that separates a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) and superconductor. A surprising and little understood aspect of pair fluctuations at this QCP is that their thermodynamics maps to that of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in the strong coupling limit. Here, we offer a …
We compute the thermodynamic properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models of fermions with a conserved fermion number, $\mathcal{Q}$. We extend a previously proposed Schwarzian effective action to include a phase field, and this describes the low temperature energy and $\mathcal{Q}$ fluctuations. We obtain higher-dimensional generalizations of the SYK models which display disordered metallic states without quasiparticle excitations, and we deduce their thermoelectric transport coefficients. We also examine the corresponding properties of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories on black brane geom…
We study a model of $N$ fermions in a quantum dot, coupled to $M$ bosons by a disorder-induced complex Yukawa coupling (Yukawa-SYK model), in order to explore the interplay between non-Fermi liquid and superconductivity in a strongly coupled, (quantum-)critical environment. We analyze the phase diagram of the model for an arbitrary complex interaction and arbitrary ratio of $N/M$, with special focus on the two regimes of non-Fermi-liquid behavior: an SYK-like behavior with a power-law frequency dependence of the fermionic self-energy and an impurity-like behavior with frequency independent sel…
The interplay of non-Fermi liquid and superconductivity born out of strong dynamical interactions is at the heart of the physics of unconventional superconductivity. As a solvable platform of the strongly correlated superconductors, we study the pairing instabilities of the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (Yukawa-SYK) model, which describes spin-1/2 fermions coupled to bosons by the random, all-to-all, spin-independent and dependent Yukawa interactions. In contrast to the previously studied models, the random Yukawa couplings are sampled from a collection of Gaussian ensembles whose variances follow …
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model incorporates rich physics, ranging from exotic non-Fermi liquid states without quasiparticle excitations, to holographic duality and quantum chaos. However, its experimental realization remains a daunting challenge due to various unnatural ingredients of the SYK Hamiltonian such as its strong randomness and fully nonlocal fermion interaction. At present, constructing such a nonlocal Hamiltonian and exploring its dynamics is best through digital quantum simulation, where state-of-the-art techniques can already handle a moderate number of qubits. Here we demonst…
Non-Fermi liquids (NFL) are a class of strongly interacting gapless fermionic systems without long-lived quasiparticle excitations. An important group of NFL model features itinerant fermions coupled to soft bosonic fluctuations near a quantum-critical point (QCP), and are widely believed to capture the essential physics of many unconventional superconductors. However numerically the direct observation of a canonical NFL behavior in such systems, characterized by a power-law form in the Green's function, has been elusive. Here we consider a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK)-like model with random Yukawa…
We present a review of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model of compressible quantum many-body systems without quasiparticle excitations, and its connections to various theoretical studies of non-Fermi liquids in condensed matter physics. The review is placed in the context of numerous experimental observations on correlated electron materials. Strong correlations in metals are often associated with their proximity to a Mott transition to an insulator created by the local Coulomb repulsion between the electrons. We explore the phase diagrams of a number of models of such local electronic correlati…
`Strange metals' with resistivity depending linearly on temperature $T$ down to low-$T$ have been a long-standing puzzle in condensed matter physics. Here, we consider a model of itinerant spin-$1/2$ fermions interacting via on-site Hubbard interaction and random infinite-ranged spin-spin interaction. We show that the quantum critical point associated with the melting of the spin-glass phase by charge fluctuations displays non-Fermi liquid behaviour, with local spin dynamics identical to that of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev family of models. This extends the quantum spin liquid dynamics previously es…
We argue that the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model has no spin glass phase, based on calculations involving both the nearly-conformal limit and the strongly-coupled Schwarzian limit of the model. This conclusion is supported by numerical computations of eigenvalue statistics with up to 46 Majorana fermions. In addition, we find numerically that the distribution of the ground state energy is Gaussian.
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes a strange metal that shows peculiar non-Fermi liquid properties without quasiparticles. It exhibits a maximally chaotic behavior characterized by out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs), and is expected to be a holographic dual to black holes. Recently, a striking similarity between the SYK model and the Hund-coupling induced spin-freezing crossover in multi-orbital Hubbard models has been pointed out. To further explore this connection, we study OTOCs for fermionic Hubbard models, which are prototypical models for strongly correlated electrons in so…

We study $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with complex fermions at non-zero background charge. Motivated by multi-charge supersymmetric black holes, we propose a new $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK model with multiple $U(1)$ symmetries, integer charges, and a non-vanishing supersymmetric index, realizing features not present in known SYK models. In both models, a conformal solution with a super-Schwarzian mode emerges at low temperatures, signalling the appearance of nearly AdS$_2$/BPS physics. However, in contrast to complex SYK, the fermion scaling dimension depends on the b…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a concrete solvable model to study non-Fermi liquid properties, holographic duality and maximally chaotic behavior. In this work, we consider a generalization of the SYK model that contains two SYK models with different number of Majorana modes coupled by quadratic terms. This model is also solvable, and the solution shows a zero-temperature quantum phase transition between two non-Fermi liquid chaotic phases. This phase transition is driven by tuning the ratio of two mode numbers, and a Fermi liquid non-chaotic phase sits at the critical point with equal m…
Models for strongly interacting fermions in disordered clusters forming an array, with electron hopping between sites, reproduce the linear dependence on temperature of the resistivity, typical of the strange metal phase of High Temperature Superconducting materials (Extended Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models). Our hydrodynamical approach to the marginal Fermi liquid emerging out of the interaction, identifies the low energy collective excitations of the system in its coherent phase. These neutral excitations diffuse in the lattice, but the diffusion is heavily hindered by coupling to the pseudo …
We discuss higher dimensional generalizations of the 0+1-dimensional Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model that has recently become the focus of intensive interdisciplinary studies by, both, the condensed matter and field-theoretical communities. Unlike the previous constructions where multiple SYK copies would be coupled to each other and/or hybridized with itinerant fermions via spatially short-ranged random hopping processes, we study algebraically varying long-range (spatially and/or temporally) correlated random couplings in the general d+1 dimensions. Such pertinent topics as translationally-inv…
Superconductivity is abundant near quantum-critical points, where fluctuations suppress the formation of Fermi liquid quasiparticles and the BCS theory no longer applies. Two very distinct approaches have been developed to address this issue: quantum-critical Eliashberg theory and holographic superconductivity. The former includes a strongly retarded pairing interaction of ill-defined fermions, the latter is rooted in the duality of quantum field theory and gravity theory. We demonstrate that both are different perspectives of the same theory. We derive holographic superconductivity in form of…
We propose a simple solvable variant of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model which displays a quantum phase transition from a fast-scrambling non-Fermi liquid to disordered Fermi liquid. Like the canonical SYK model, our variant involves a single species of Majorana fermions connected by all-to-all random four-fermion interactions. The phase transition is driven by a random two-fermion term added to the Hamiltonian whose structure is inspired by proposed solid-state realizations of the SYK model. Analytic expressions for the saddle point solutions at large number $N$ of fermions are obtained and …
We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models in the $q\rightarrow\infty$ limit, where $q/2$ denotes the order of the random Dirac fermion interaction. We extend previous results by Eberlein et al. [Phys. Rev. B 96, 205123 (2017)] to show that a single SYK $q\rightarrow\infty$ Hamiltonian for $t\geq 0$ is a perfect thermalizer in the sense that the local Green's function is instantaneously thermal. The only memories of the quantum state for $t<0$ are its charge density and its energy density at $t=0$. Our result is valid for all quantum states amenable t…
We present a new method for calculating Renyi entanglement entropies for fermionic field-theories originating from microscopic Hamiltonians. The method builds on an operator identity which we discover for the first time. The identity leads to the representation of traces of operator products, and thus Renyi entropies of a subsystem, in terms of fermionic-displacement operators. This allows for a very transparent path-integral formulation, both in and out-of-equilibrium, having a simple boundary condition on the fermionic fields. The method is validated by reproducing well known expressions for…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is an all-to-all interacting Majorana fermion model for many-body quantum chaos and the holographic correspondence. Here we construct fermionic all-to-all Floquet quantum circuits of random four-body gates designed to capture key features of SYK dynamics. Our circuits can be built using local ingredients in Majorana devices, namely charging-mediated interactions and braiding Majorana zero modes. This offers an analog-digital route to SYK quantum simulations that reconciles all-to-all interactions with the topological protection of Majorana zero modes, a key fe…
We introduce the concept of quasi-metaparticles based on the theory of metaparticles, the zero modes of the metastring. We apply the concept of quasi-metaparticles to the problem of non-Fermi liquids and the properties of strange metals. In particular, we point out that the quasi-metaparticle Green's function interpolates between the canonical quasi-particle Green's function and the result found in the context of the SYK model, which presents an exactly solvable model without quasiparticles. The linear dependence of resistivity with temperature is reproduced in the SYK limit. Also, the Cooper …
We propose an extension of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model that exhibits a quantum phase transition from the previously identified non-Fermi liquid fixed point to a Fermi liquid like state, while still allowing an exact solution in a suitable large $N$ limit. The extended model involves coupling the interacting $N$-site SYK model to a new set of $pN$ peripheral sites with only quadratic hopping terms between them. The conformal fixed point of the SYK model remains a stable low energy phase below a critical ratio of peripheral sites $p<p_c(n)$ that depends on the fermion filling $n$. The scra…
Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) or embedded random ensembles are models of $N$ fermions with random k-body interactions. They play an important role in understanding black hole dynamics, quantum chaos, and thermalization. We study out of equilibrium scenarios in these systems and show they display perfect decoherence at all times. This peculiar feature makes them very attractive in the context of the quantum-to-classical transition and the emergence of classical general relativity. Based on this feature and unitarity, we propose a rate/continuity equation for the dynamics of the $\mathcal{O}(e^N)$ mic…
We determine the global renormalization group (RG) flow of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. This flow allows for an understanding of the surprising role of critical slowing down at a quantum first-order transition in strongly-correlated electronic systems. From a simple truncation of the infinite hierarchy of the exact functional RG flow equations we identify several fixed points: Apart from a stable fixed point, associated with the celebrated non-Fermi liquid state of the model, we find another stable fixed point related to an integer-valence state. These stable fixed points are separated b…
We analyze the phase diagram of the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, which describes complex fermions randomly interacting with real bosons via a Yukawa coupling, at finite temperatures and varying fermion density. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Research 2, 033084 (2020)] it has been shown that, upon varying filling or chemical potential, there exists a first-order quantum phase transition between a non-Fermi liquid (nFL) phase and an insulating phase. Here we show that in such a model with time-reversal symmetry this quantum phase transition is preempted by a pairing phase that develops as a low…
We study various aspects of the mass deformed SYK model which can escape the interiors of pure boundary state black holes. SYK boundary states are given by a simple local boundary condition on the Majorana fermions and then evolved in Euclidean time in the SYK Hamiltonian. We study the ground state of this mass deformed SYK model in detail. We also use SYK boundary states as a variational approximation to the ground state of the mass deformed SYK model. We compare variational approximation with the exact ground state results and they showed a good agreement. We also study the time evolution of…
Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model has emerged as a new paradigm of the non-Fermi-liquid behavior. Here we investigate a possibility of having a superconducting off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) and a pseudogap phase within the SYK framework. We found that ODLRO may be established in spin-1/2 version of the model with the time-reversal invariance and an extra attractive interaction. If the latter is taken as the on-site negative-$U$ Hubbard term, it leads to the pseudogap phase at $U<U_c$ dominated by quantum fluctuations of local phases. These fluctuations are described by a quantum version of…
We study quantum mechanical models in which the dynamical degrees of freedom are real fermionic tensors of rank five and higher. They are the non-random counterparts of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models where the Hamiltonian couples six or more fermions. For the tensors of rank five, there is a unique $O(N)^5$ symmetric sixth-order Hamiltonian leading to a solvable large $N$ limit dominated by the melonic diagrams. We solve for the complete energy spectrum of this model when $N=2$ and deduce exact expressions for all the eigenvalues. The subset of states which are gauge invariant exhibit dege…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a rare example of a strongly-interacting system that is analytically tractable. Tractability arises because the model is largely structureless by design and therefore artificial: while the interaction is restricted to two-body terms, interaction matrix elements are "randomized" and therefore the corresponding interaction operator does not commute with the local density. Unlike conventional density-density-type interactions, the SYK-interaction is, in this sense, not integrable. We here investigate a variant of the (complex) SYK model, which restores this in…
Several condensed-matter platforms have been proposed recently to realize the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in their low-energy limit. In these proposed realizations, the characteristic SYK behavior is expected to occur under certain assumptions about the underlying physical system that (i) render all bilinear terms small compared to four-fermion interactions and (ii) ensure that the coupling constants are approximately all-to-all and independent random variables. In this work we explore, both analytically and numerically, the family of models that arises when we relax these assumptions in way…
A pair of identical Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with bilinear coupling forms a quantum dual of a traversable wormhole, with a ground state close to the so called thermofield double state. We use adiabaticity arguments and numerical simulations to show that the character of the ground state remains unchanged when interaction strengths in the two SYK models become imbalanced. Analysis of thermodynamic and dynamical quantities highlights the key signatures of the wormhole phase in the imbalanced case. Further adiabatic evolution naturally leads to the 'maximally imbalanced' limit where fermion…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK$_{4}$) model has attracted attention for its fast scrambling properties and its thermalization rate that is set only by the temperature. In this work we ask the question of whether the SYK$_{4}$ model is also a good thermal bath, in the sense that it allows a system coupled to it to thermalize. We address this question by considering the dynamics of a system of $N$ random non-interacting Majorana fermions coupled to an SYK$_{4}$ bath with $M$ Majorana fermions that we solve with Keldysh techniques in the limit of $M\gg N\gg 1$. We compare this nonequilibrium setting …
We study a dual flavor fermion model where each of the flavors form a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) system with arbitrary and possibly distinct $q$-body interactions. The crucial new element is an arbitrary all-to-all $r$-body interaction between the two flavors. At high temperatures the model shows a strange metal phase where both flavors are gapless, similar to the usual single flavor SYK model. Upon reducing temperature, the coupled system undergoes phase transitions to previously unseen phases - first, a strange half metal (SHM) phase where one flavor remains a strange metal while the other is g…
In many-body chaotic systems, the size of an operator generically grows in Heisenberg evolution, which can be measured by certain out-of-time-ordered four-point functions. However, these only provide a coarse probe of the full underlying operator growth structure. In this article we develop a methodology to derive the full growth structure of fermionic systems, that also naturally introduces the effect of finite temperature. We then apply our methodology to the SYK model, which features all-to-all $q$-body interactions. We derive the full operator growth structure in the large $q$ limit at all…
