The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is an all-to-all interacting Majorana fermion model for many-body quantum chaos and the holographic correspondence. Here we construct fermionic all-to-all Floquet quantum circuits of random four-body gates designed to capture key features of SYK dynamics. Our circuits can be built using local ingredients in Majorana devices, namely charging-mediated interactions and braiding Majorana zero modes. This offers an analog-digital route to SYK quantum simulations that reconciles all-to-all interactions with the topological protection of Majorana zero modes, a key feature missing in existing proposals for analog SYK simulation. We also describe how dynamical, including out-of-time-ordered, correlation functions can be measured in such analog-digital implementations by employing foreseen capabilities in Majorana devices.
Supersymmetry is a powerful concept in quantum many-body physics. It helps to illuminate ground state properties of complex quantum systems and gives relations between correlation functions. In this work, we show that the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, in its simplest form of Majorana fermions with random four-body interactions, is supersymmetric. In contrast to existing explicitly supersymmetric extensions of the model, the supersymmetry we find requires no relations between couplings. The type of supersymmetry and the structure of the supercharges are entirely set by the number of interacting Majo…
We show that the proper inclusion of soft reparameterization modes in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model of $N$ randomly interacting Majorana fermions reduces its long-time behavior to that of Liouville quantum mechanics. As a result, all zero temperature correlation functions decay with the universal exponent $\propto τ^{-3/2}$ for times larger than the inverse single particle level spacing $τ\gg N\ln N$. In the particular case of the single particle Green function this behavior is manifestation of the zero-bias anomaly, or scaling in energy as $ε^{1/2}$. We also present exact diagonalization study …
The existence of a quantum butterfly effect in the form of exponential sensitivity to small perturbations has been under debate for a long time. Lately, this question gained increased interest due to the proposal to probe chaotic dynamics and scrambling using out-of-time-order correlators. In this work we study echo dynamics in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model under effective time reversal in a semiclassical approach. We demonstrate that small imperfections introduced in the time-reversal procedure result in an exponential divergence from the perfect echo, which allows to identify a Lyapunov expone…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes a collection of randomly interacting Majorana fermions that exhibits profound connections to quantum chaos and black holes. We propose a solid-state implementation based on a quantum dot coupled to an array of topological superconducting wires hosting Majorana zero modes. Interactions and disorder intrinsic to the dot mediate the desired random Majorana couplings, while an approximate symmetry suppresses additional unwanted terms. We use random matrix theory and numerics to show that our setup emulates the SYK model (up to corrections that we quantif…
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a one-dimensional complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev chain by directly solving for the steady state Green's functions in terms of small perturbations around their equilibrium values. The model exhibits strange metal behavior without quasiparticles and features diffusive propagation of both energy and charge. We explore the thermoelectric transport properties of this system by imposing uniform temperature and chemical potential gradients. We then expand the conserved charges and their associated currents to leading order in these gradients, which we can compute n…
We construct a sign-problem free variant of the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model which keeps all the essential properties of the SYK model, including the analytic solvability in the large-$N$ limit and being maximally chaotic. In addition to the number of complex fermions $N$, our model has an additional parameter $M$ controlling the number of terms in the Hamiltonian which we take $M \to \infty$ with keeping $M/N$ constant in the large-$N$ limit. While our model respects global $U(1)$ symmetry associated with the fermion number conservation, both the large-$N$ limit and the sign-problem …
We study the level statistics of a generalized Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with two-body and one-body random interactions of finite range by exact diagonalization. Tuning the range of the one-body term, while keeping the two-body interaction sufficiently long-ranged, does not alter substantially the spectral correlations, which are still given by the random matrix prediction typical of a quantum chaotic system. However a transition to an insulating state, characterized by Poisson statistics, is observed by reducing the range of the two-body interaction. Close to the many-body metal-insulator…
We investigate existence of replica off-diagonal solutions in the field-theoretical description of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. To this end we evaluate a set of local and non-local dynamic correlation functions in the long time limit. We argue that the structure of the soft-mode Schwarzian action is qualitatively different in replica-diagonal vs. replica-off-diagonal scenarios, leading to distinct long-time predictions for the correlation functions. We then evaluate the corresponding correlation functions numerically and compare the simulations with analytical predictions of replica-diagonal and r…
We develop a general framework for studying the equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of arbitrary networks of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev clusters coupled to thermal baths. We proceed to apply this technique to the problem of energy transport, which is known to be diffusive due to the strange metal behavior of these models. We use the external baths to impose a temperature gradient in the system and study the emerging non-equilibrium steady state using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism. We consider two different configurations for the baths, implementing either a boundary or bulk driving, and show t…
The short time (large energy) behavior of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model (SYK) is one of the main motivation to the growing interest garnered by this model. True chaotic behaviour sets in at the Thouless time, which can be extracted from the energy spectrum. In order to do so, it is necessary to unfold the spectrum, i.e., to filter out global tendencies. Using a simple ensemble average for unfolding results in a parametically low estimation of the Thouless energy. By examining the behavior of the spectrum as the distribution of the matrix elements is changed into a log-normal distribution it is s…
The complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (cSYK) model is a charge-conserving model of randomly interacting fermions. The interaction term can be chosen such that the model exhibits chiral symmetry. Then, depending on the charge sector and the number of interacting fermions, level spacing statistics suggests a fourfold categorization of the model into the three Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes. In this work, inspired by previous findings for the Majorana Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, we embed the symmetry classes of the cSYK model in the Altland-Zirnbauer framework and identify consequences of chiral symmetry ori…
Many aspects of many-body localization (MBL) transitions remain elusive so far. Here, we propose a higher-dimensional generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and show that it exhibits a MBL transition. The model on a bipartite lattice has $N$ Majorana fermions with SYK interactions on each site of the $A$ sublattice and $M$ free Majorana fermions on each site the of $B$ sublattice, where $N$ and $M$ are large and finite. For $r$$\equiv$$M/N\!<\!r_c$=1, it describes a diffusive metal exhibiting maximal chaos. Remarkably, its diffusive constant $D$ vanishes [$D$$\propto$$ (r_c-r)^{1/…
We introduce and solve a model of interacting electrons and phonons that is a natural generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev-model and that becomes superconducting at low temperatures. In the normal state two Non-Fermi liquid fixed points with distinct universal exponents emerge. At weak coupling superconductivity prevents the onset of low-temperature quantum criticality, reminiscent of the behavior in several heavy-electron and iron-based materials. At strong coupling, pairing of highly incoherent fermions sets in deep in the Non-Fermi liquid regime, a behavior qualitatively similar to that …
We study chaos in a classical limit of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model obtained in a suitably defined large-S limit. The low-temperature Lyapunov exponent is found to depend linearly on temperature, with a slope that is parametrically different than in the quantum case: it is proportional to N/S. The classical dynamics can be understood as the rotation of an N-dimensional body with a random inertia tensor, corresponding to the random couplings of the SYK Hamiltonian. This allows us to find an extensive number of fixed points, corresponding to the body's principal axes of rotation. The thermo…
We compute the transport and chaos properties of lattices of quantum Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev islands coupled by single fermion hopping, and with the islands coupled to a large number of local, low energy phonons. We find two distinct regimes of linear-in-temperature ($T$) resistivity, and describe the crossover between them. When the electron-phonon coupling is weak, we obtain the `incoherent metal' regime, where there is near-maximal chaos with front propagation at a butterfly velocity $v_B$, and the associated diffusivity $D_{\rm chaos} = v_B^2/(2 πT)$ closely tracks the energy diffusivity. On the…
We prove non-perturbative bounds on the time evolution of the probability distribution of operator size in the $q$-local Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with $N$ fermions, for any even integer $q>2$ and any positive even integer $N>2q$. If the couplings in the Hamiltonian are independent and identically distributed Rademacher random variables, the infinite temperature many-body Lyapunov exponent is almost surely finite as $N\rightarrow\infty$. In the limit $q \rightarrow \infty$, $N\rightarrow \infty$, $q^{6+δ}/N \rightarrow 0$, the shape of the size distribution of a growing fermion, obtained by lead…
A long period of linear growth in the spectral form factor provides a universal diagnostic of quantum chaos at intermediate times. By contrast, the behavior of the spectral form factor in disordered integrable many-body models is not well understood. Here we study the two-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and show that the spectral form factor features an exponential ramp, in sharp contrast to the linear ramp in chaotic models. We find a novel mechanism for this exponential ramp in terms of a high-dimensional manifold of saddle points in the path integral formulation of the spectral form factor. Th…
Quantum scrambling plays an important role in understanding thermalization in closed quantum systems. By this effect, quantum information spreads throughout the system and becomes hidden in the form of non-local correlations. Alternatively, it can be described in terms of the increase in complexity and spatial support of operators in the Heisenberg picture, a phenomenon known as operator growth. In this work, we study the disordered fully-connected Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, and we demonstrate that scrambling is absent for disorder-averaged expectation values of observables. In detail, we …
We study a simplified version of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with real interactions by exact diagonalization. Instead of satisfying a continuous Gaussian distribution, the interaction strengths are assumed to be chosen from discrete values with a finite separation. A quantum phase transition from a chaotic state to an integrable state is observed by increasing the discrete separation. Below the critical value, the discrete model can well reproduce various physical quantities of the original SYK model, including the volume law of the ground-state entanglement, level distribution, thermody…
We consider the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model as an effective theory arising at the zero-dimensional boundary of a many-body localized, Fermionic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase in one spatial dimension. The Fermions at the boundary are always fully interacting. We find that the boundary is thermalized and investigate how its boundary anomaly, dictated by the bulk SPT order, is encoded in the quantum chaotic eigenspectrum of the SYK model. We show that depending on the SPT symmetry class, the boundary many-body level statistics cycle in a systematic manner through those of the three…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, in its simplest form, describes $k$ Majorana fermions with random all-to-all four-body interactions. We consider the SYK model in the framework of a many-body Altland-Zirnbauer classification that sees the system as belonging to one of eight (real) symmetry classes depending on the value of $k\mod 8$. We show that, depending on the symmetry class, the system may support exact many-body zero modes with the symmetries also dictating whether these may have a nonzero contribution to Majorana fermions, i.e., single-particle weight. These zero modes appear in all b…
We present a review of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model of compressible quantum many-body systems without quasiparticle excitations, and its connections to various theoretical studies of non-Fermi liquids in condensed matter physics. The review is placed in the context of numerous experimental observations on correlated electron materials. Strong correlations in metals are often associated with their proximity to a Mott transition to an insulator created by the local Coulomb repulsion between the electrons. We explore the phase diagrams of a number of models of such local electronic correlati…
We investigate the supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, $N$ Majorana fermions with infinite range interactions in $0+1$ dimensions. We have found that, close to the ground state $E \approx 0$, discrete symmetries alter qualitatively the spectral properties with respect to the non-supersymmetric SYK model. The average spectral density at finite $N$, which we compute analytically and numerically, grows exponentially with $N$ for $E \approx 0$. However the chiral condensate, which is normalized with respect the total number of eigenvalues, vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. Slightly ab…
We analyze a two-body nonhermitian two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with the couplings of one site complex conjugated to the other site. This model, with no explicit coupling between the sites, shows an infinite number of phase transitions which is a consequence of the partition function factorizing into a product over Matsubara frequencies. We calculate the quenched free energy in two different ways, first in terms of the single-particle energies, and second by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equations. The first calculation can be done entirely in terms of a one-site model. The conjugate replica…
