We review our recent work [arXiv:2009.10759] where we studied the chaotic property of the two coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev systems exhibiting a Hawking-Page like phase transition. By computing the out-of-time-ordered correlator in the large N limit by using the bilocal field formalism, we found that the chaos exponent of this model shows a discontinuous fall-off at the phase transition temperature. Hence in this model the Hawking-Page like transition is correlated with a transition in chaoticity, as expected from the relation between a black hole geometry and the chaotic behavior in the dual field theory.
We study various aspects of the mass deformed SYK model which can escape the interiors of pure boundary state black holes. SYK boundary states are given by a simple local boundary condition on the Majorana fermions and then evolved in Euclidean time in the SYK Hamiltonian. We study the ground state of this mass deformed SYK model in detail. We also use SYK boundary states as a variational approximation to the ground state of the mass deformed SYK model. We compare variational approximation with the exact ground state results and they showed a good agreement. We also study the time evolution of…
We study the onset of RMT dynamics in the mass-deformed SYK model (i.e. an SYK model deformed by a quadratic random interaction) in terms of the strength of the quadratic deformation. We use as chaos probes both the connected unfolded Spectral Form Factor (SFF) as well as the Gaussian-filtered SFF, which has been recently introduced in the literature. We show that they detect the chaotic/integrable transition of the mass-deformed SYK model at different values of the mass deformation: the Gaussian-filtered SFF sees the transition for large values of the mass deformation; the connected unfolded …
We study the thermalizing properties of the mass-deformed SYK model, in a regime of parameters where the eigenstates are ergodically extended over just portions of the full Fock space, as an all-to-all toy model of many-body localization. Our numerical results strongly support the hypothesis that, although considerably delayed, thermalization is still present in this regime. Our results add to recent studies indicating that many-body localization should be interpreted as a strict Fock-space localization.
In this paper we study the chaos exponent, the exponential growth rate of the out-of-time-ordered four point functions, in a two coupled SYK models which exhibits a first order phase transition between the high temperature black hole phase and the low temperature gapped phase interpreted as a traversable wormhole. We see that as the temperature decreases the chaos exponent exhibits a discontinuous fall-off from the value of order the universal bound $2π/β$ at the critical temperature of the phase transition, which is consistent with the expected relation between black holes and strong chaos. I…
We use random matrix theory to explore late-time chaos in supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems. Motivated by the recent study of supersymmetric SYK models and their random matrix classification, we consider the Wishart-Laguerre unitary ensemble and compute the spectral form factors and frame potentials to quantify chaos and randomness. Compared to the Gaussian ensembles, we observe the absence of a dip regime in the form factor and a slower approach to Haar-random dynamics. We find agreement between our random matrix analysis and predictions from the supersymmetric SYK model, and discuss …
In this work, we investigate the quantum chaos in various $T\bar{T}$-deformed SYK models with finite $N$, including the SYK$_4$, the supersymmetric SYK$_4$, and the SYK$_2$ models. We numerically study the evolution of the spectral form factor (SFF), the out-of-time ordered correlator (OTOC), and the Krylov complexity. We find that the characteristic evolution of the SFF, OTOC and K-complexity of both the SYK$_4$ and SSYK$_4$ models remains unchanged under the deformation, which implies that the properties of quantum chaos is preserved. We also identify a many-body localization behavior in the…
We study chaotic-integrable transition and the nature of quantum chaos in SYK model with chemical potential. We use a novel numerical technique to calculate the partition function explicitly. We show the phase transition in the presence of large chemical potential. We also show that a mass-like term consisting of two fermion random interaction (q=2 SYK term) does not give rise to a sharp transition. We find that turning on the chemical potential suppresses the Lyapunov exponent in the chaotic phase exponentially.
This paper considers a type of generalized large $q$ SYK models which include multi-body interactions between Majorana fermions. We derive an effective action in the limit of large $N$ and large $q$ (with ${~q^2\over N} $ small), and find a universal expression for thermodynamical quantities. We also consider the chaos exponent using the retarded kernel method and find an efficient way to calculate the Lyapunov exponent for generalized large $q$ SYK models numerically.
The sparse version of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model reproduces essential features of the original SYK model while reducing the number of disorder parameters. In this paper, we propose a further simplification of the model which we call the binary-coupling sparse SYK model. We set the nonzero couplings to be $\pm 1$, rather than being sampled from a continuous distribution such as Gaussian. Remarkably, this simplification turns out to be an improvement: the binary-coupling model exhibits strong correlations in the spectrum, which is the important feature of the original SYK model that leads…
In this letter, we study the return amplitude, which is the overlap between the initial state and the time evolved state, in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Initial states are taken to be product states in a spin basis. We numerically study the return amplitude by exactly diagonalizing the Hamiltonian. We also derive the analytic expression for the return amplitude in random matrix theory. The SYK results agree with the random matrix expectation. We also study the time evolution under the different Hamiltonian that describes the traversable wormholes in projected black holes in the context …
The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis is a compelling conjecture which strives to explain the apparent thermal behavior of generic observables in closed quantum systems. Although we are far from a complete analytic understanding, quantum chaos is often seen as a strong indication that the ansatz holds true. In this paper, we address the thermalization of energy eigenstates in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, a maximally chaotic model of strongly-interacting Majorana fermions. We numerically investigate eigenstate thermalization for specific few-body operators in the original SYK model as well a…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a concrete model for non-Fermi Liquid with maximally chaotic behavior in $0+1$-$d$. In order to gain some insights into real materials in higher dimensions where fermions could hop between different sites, here we consider coupling a SYK lattice by a constant hopping. We call this dispersive SYK model. Focusing on $1+1$-$d$ homogeneous hopping, by either tuning temperature or the relative strength of random interaction (hopping) and constant hopping, we find a crossover between a dispersive metal to an incoherent metal, where dynamic exponent $z$ changes fr…
We investigate chaotic to integrable transition in two types of hybrid SYK models which contain both $ q=4 $ SYK with interaction $ J $ and $ q=2 $ SYK with an interaction $ K $ in type-I or $(q=2)^2$ SYK with an interaction $ \sqrt{K} $ in type-II. These models include hybrid Majorana fermion, complex fermion and bosonic SYK. For the Majorana fermion case, we discuss both $ N $ even and $ N $ odd case. We make exact symmetry analysis on the possible symmetry class of both types of hybrid SYK in the 10 fold way by Random Matrix Theory (RMT) and also work out the degeneracy of each energy level…
Entanglement, chaos, and complexity are as important for de Sitter space as for AdS and for black holes. There are similarities and great differences between AdS and dS in how these concepts are manifested in the space-time geometry. In the first part of this paper the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, the theory of fast scrambling, and the holographic complexity correspondence are reformulated for de Sitter space. Criteria are proposed for a holographic model to describe de Sitter space. The criteria can be summarized by the requirement that scrambling and complexity growth must be "hyperfast." In…
We investigate a model closely related to both the original Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric SYK model. It consists of $N$ real Majorana fermions and $M$ auxiliary bosons with Yukawa interactions. We consider the large $N$ and $M$ limit and keep the ratio $M/N$ fixed. The model has two branches characterized by the conformal dimensions of fields, which we compute as a function of the ratio $M/N$. One of the branches contains the supersymmetric saddle for $M=N$. Furthermore, we determine the Lyapunov exponent of the model and find maximal chaos independent of…

In this Letter, based on the notion of gauge/gravity duality, we compute $ q $ SYK spectra in the presence of Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations. The gravitational counterpart of this duality turns out to be the YB deformed Almheiri-Polchinski (AP) model embodied with hyperbolic potential for the dilaton. Following Kaluza-Klein reduction on $ (AdS_2)_η\times (S^1/ Z_2) $, we compute the deformed Green's function that reproduces the original $ q $ SYK spectrum in the limit of vanishing deformations.
We consider the relation between SYK-like models and vector models by studying a toy model where a tensor field is coupled with a vector field. By integrating out the tensor field, the toy model reduces to the Gross-Neveu model in 1 dimension. On the other hand, a certain perturbation can be turned on and the toy model flows to an SYK-like model at low energy. A chaotic-nonchaotic phase transition occurs as the sign of the perturbation is altered. We further study similar models that possess chaos and enhanced reparameterization symmetries.
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes Majorana fermions with random interaction, which displays many interesting properties such as non-Fermi liquid behavior, quantum chaos, emergent conformal symmetry and holographic duality. Here we consider a SYK model or a chain of SYK models with $N$ Majorana fermion modes coupled to another SYK model with $N^2$ Majorana fermion modes, in which the latter has many more degrees of freedom and plays the role as a thermal bath. For a single SYK model coupled to the thermal bath, we show that although the Lyapunov exponent is still proportional to tempe…
We study the generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model to a $1+1$ dimensional chiral SYK model of $N$ flavors of right-moving chiral Majorana fermions with all-to-all random 4-fermion interactions. The interactions in this model are exactly marginal, leading to an exact scaling symmetry. We show the Schwinger-Dyson equation of this model in the large $N$ limit is exactly solvable. In addition, we show this model is integrable for small $N\le6$ by bosonization. Surprisingly, the two point function in the large $N$ limit has exactly the same form as that for $N=4$, although the four po…
We study a 2-dimensional SYK model with $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry. The model describes $N$ chiral supermultiplets and $M$ Fermi supermultiplets with a $(q+1)$-field interaction. We solve the model analytically and numerically in the $N\gg 1$, $M\gg 1$ limit with $μ\equiv \frac{M}{N}$ being a free parameter. Two distinct higher-spin symmetries emerge when the $μ$ parameter approaches the two ends of its range. This is verified by the appearance of conserved higher-spin operators and the vanishing of chaotic behaviors in the two limits. Therefore this model provides a manifest realizatio…
We study the SYK model with complex fermions, in the presence of an all-to-all $q$-body interaction, with a non-vanishing chemical potential. We find that, in the large $q$ limit, this model can be solved exactly and the corresponding Lyapunov exponent can be obtained semi-analytically. The resulting Lyapunov exponent is a sensitive function of the chemical potential $μ$. Even when the coupling $J$, which corresponds to the disorder averaged values of the all to all fermion interaction, is large, values of $μ$ which are exponentially small compared to $J$ lead to suppression of the Lyapunov ex…
The nonlinear supermatrix $σ$-model is widely used to understand the physics of Anderson localization and the level statistics in noninteracting disordered electron systems. In contrast to the general belief that the supersymmetry method applies only to systems of noninteracting particles, we adopt this approach to the disorder averaging in the interacting models. In particular, we apply supersymmetry to study the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, where the disorder averaging has so far been performed only within the replica approach. We use a slightly modified, time-reversal invariant version of…
We consider the Brownian SYK model of $N$ interacting Majorana fermions, with random couplings that are taken to vary independently at each time. We study the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) of arbitrary observables and the Rényi-$2$ tripartite information of the unitary evolution operator, which were proposed as diagnostic tools for quantum chaos and scrambling, respectively. We show that their averaged dynamics can be studied as a quench problem at imaginary times in a model of $N$ qudits, where the Hamiltonian displays site-permutational symmetry. By exploiting a description in term…
In this paper, we study an SYK model and an SYK-like tensor model with global symmetry. First, we study the large $N$ expansion of the bi-local collective action for the SYK model with manifest global symmetry. We show that the global symmetry is enhanced to a local symmetry at strong coupling limit, and the corresponding symmetry algebra is the Kac-Moody algebra. The emergent local symmetry together with the emergent reparametrization is spontaneously and explicit broken. This leads to a low energy effective action. We evaluate four point functions, and obtain spectrum of our model. We derive…
We investigate the charged $q/2$-body interacting Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in the grand-canonical ensemble. By treating $q$ as a large parameter, we are able to analytically study its phase diagram. By varying the chemical potential or temperature, we find that the system undergoes a phase transition between low and high entropies, in the maximally chaotic regime. A similar transition in entropy is seen in charged AdS black holes transitioning between a large and small event horizon. Approaching zero temperature, we find a first-order chaotic-to-non-chaotic quantum phase transition, where…
Motivated by $T\bar T$, we introduce and study a wide class of solvable deformations of quantum-mechanical theories. These deformations map the Hamiltonian to a function of itself. We solve these theories by computing all finite-temperature correlation functions of the deformed theory in terms of the correlators of the undeformed theory. Applications to AdS/CFT, SYK, and the Schwarzian theory are considered. We write down the deformed Schwarzian action for an arbitrary Hamiltonian deformation and find that the maximal Lyapunov exponent is unchanged.

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a concrete solvable model to study non-Fermi liquid properties, holographic duality and maximally chaotic behavior. In this work, we consider a generalization of the SYK model that contains two SYK models with different number of Majorana modes coupled by quadratic terms. This model is also solvable, and the solution shows a zero-temperature quantum phase transition between two non-Fermi liquid chaotic phases. This phase transition is driven by tuning the ratio of two mode numbers, and a Fermi liquid non-chaotic phase sits at the critical point with equal m…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a quantum mechanical model of fermions interacting with $q$-body random couplings. For $q=2$, it describes free particles, and is non-chaotic in the many-body sense, while for $q>2$ it is strongly interacting and exhibits many-body chaos. In this work we study the entanglement entropy (EE) of the SYK$q$ models, for a bipartition of $N$ real or complex fermions into subsystems containing $2m$ real/$m$ complex fermions and $N-2m$/$N-m$ fermions in the remainder. For the free model SYK$2$, we obtain an analytic expression for the EE, derived from the $β$-Jacob…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model incorporates rich physics, ranging from exotic non-Fermi liquid states without quasiparticle excitations, to holographic duality and quantum chaos. However, its experimental realization remains a daunting challenge due to various unnatural ingredients of the SYK Hamiltonian such as its strong randomness and fully nonlocal fermion interaction. At present, constructing such a nonlocal Hamiltonian and exploring its dynamics is best through digital quantum simulation, where state-of-the-art techniques can already handle a moderate number of qubits. Here we demonst…
We study chaos in a classical limit of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model obtained in a suitably defined large-S limit. The low-temperature Lyapunov exponent is found to depend linearly on temperature, with a slope that is parametrically different than in the quantum case: it is proportional to N/S. The classical dynamics can be understood as the rotation of an N-dimensional body with a random inertia tensor, corresponding to the random couplings of the SYK Hamiltonian. This allows us to find an extensive number of fixed points, corresponding to the body's principal axes of rotation. The thermo…
