The Griffiths first and second inequalities have played an important role in the analysis of ferromagnetic models. In spin-glass models, although the counterpart of the Griffiths first inequality has been obtained, the counterpart of the Griffiths second inequality has not been established. In this study, we generalize the method in the previous work [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 76, 074711 (2007)] to the case with multi variables for both symmetric and non-symmetric distributions of the interactions, and derive some correlation inequalities for spin-glass models. Furthermore, by combining the acquired equalities in symmetric distributions, we show that there is a non-trivial positive upper bound on the second derivative of the quenched pressure with respect to the strength of the randomness, which is a weak result of the counterpart of the Griffiths second inequality in spin-glass models for general symmetric distributions.
The Griffiths inequalities for Ising spin-glass models with Gaussian randomness of non-vanishing mean are proved using properties of the Gaussian distribution and gauge symmetry of the system. These inequalities imply that correlation functions are non-negative and monotonic along the Nishimori line in the phase diagram. From this result, the existence of thermodynamic limit for correlation functions and pressure is proved under free and fixed boundary conditions. Relations between the location of multicritical points are also derived for different lattices.
The Blume-Emery-Griffiths spin glass is studied by renormalization-group theory in d=3. The boundary between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases has first-order and two types of second-order segments. This topology includes an inverted tricritical point, first-order transitions replacing second-order transitions as temperature is lowered. The phase diagrams show disconnected spin-glass regions, spin-glass and paramagnetic reentrances, and complete reentrance, where the spin-glass phase replaces the ferromagnet as temperature is lowered for all chemical potentials.

We study the Blume-Emery-Griffiths spin glass model in presence of an attractive coupling between real replicas, and evaluate the effective potential as a function of the density overlap. We find that there is a region, above the first order transition of the model, where metastable states with a large density overlap exist. The line where these metastable states appear should correspond to a purely dynamical transition, with a breaking of ergodicity. Differently from what happens in p-spin glasses, in this model the dynamical transition would not be the precursor of a 1-step RSB transition, b…
Quenched disorder is known to play a relevant role in dynamical processes and phase transitions. Its effects on the dynamics of complex networks have hardly been studied. Aimed at filling this gap, we analyze the Contact Process, i.e. the simplest propagation model, with quenched disorder on complex networks. We find Griffiths phases and other rare region effects, leading rather generically to anomalously slow (algebraic, logarithmic, ...) relaxation, on Erd\H os-Rényi networks. Similar effects are predicted to exist for other topologies with a finite percolation threshold. More surprisingly, …
We study the equilibrium properties of the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model with bilinear quenched disorder in the case of attractive as well as repulsive biquadratic interactions. The global phase diagram of the system is calculated in the context of the replica symmetric mean field approximation.
The Griffiths inequalities for Ising spin glasses are proved on the Nishimori line with various bond randomness which includes Gaussian and $\pm J$ bond randomness. The proof for Ising systems with Gaussian bond randomness has already been carried out by Morita et al, which uses not only the gauge theory but also the properties of the Gaussian distribution, so that it cannot be directly applied to the systems with other bond randomness. The present proof essentially uses only the gauge theory, so that it does not depend on the detail properties of the probability distribution of random interac…
We predict the existence of Griffith phase in the dielectrics with concentrational crossover between dipole glass (electric analog of spin glass) and ferroelectricity. The peculiar representatives of above substances are $KTaO_3:Li$, $Nb$, $Na$ or relaxor ferroelectrics like $Pb_{1-x}La_xZr_{0.65}Ti_{0.35}O_3$. Since this phase exists above ferroelectric phase transition temperature (but below that temperature for ordered substance), we call it "para-glass phase". We assert that the difference between paraelectric and para-glass phase of above substances is the existence of clusters (inherent …
We investigate the distribution of zeros of the partition function of the two- and three-dimensional symmetric $\pm J$ Ising spin glasses on the complex field plane. We use the method to analytically implement the idea of numerical transfer matrix which provides us with the exact expression of the partition function as a polynomial of fugacity. The results show that zeros are distributed in a wide region in the complex field plane. Nevertheless we observe that zeros on the imaginary axis play dominant roles in the critical behaviour since zeros on the imaginary axis are in closer proximity to …
Dynamical processes occurring on top of complex networks have become an exciting area of research. Quenched disorder plays a relevant role in general dynamical processes and phase transitions, but the effect of topological quenched disorder on the dynamics of complex networks has not been systematically studied so far. Here, we provide heuristic and numerical analyses of the contact process defined on some complex networks with topological disorder. We report on Griffiths phases and other rare region effects, leading rather generically to anomalously slow relaxation in generalized small-world …
We study the $\pm J$ transverse-field Ising spin glass model at zero temperature on d-dimensional hypercubic lattices and in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model, by series expansions around the strong field limit. In the SK model and in high-dimensions our calculated critical properties are in excellent agreement with the exact mean-field results, surprisingly even down to dimension $d = 6$ which is below the upper critical dimension of $d=8$. In contrast, in lower dimensions we find a rich singular behavior consisting of critical and Griffiths-McCoy singularities. The divergence of the equ…
The study of the mean-field static solution of the Random Blume-Emery-Griffiths-Capel model, an Ising-spin lattice gas with quenched random magnetic interaction, is performed. The model exhibits a paramagnetic phase, described by a stable Replica Symmetric solution. When the temperature is decreased or the density increases, the system undergoes a phase transition to a Full Replica Symmetry Breaking spin-glass phase. The nature of the transition can be either of the second order (like in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model) or, at temperature below a given critical value, of the first order in t…
In itinerant magnetic systems with disorder, the quantum Griffiths phase at T=0 is unstable to formation of a cluster glass (CG) of frozen droplet degrees of freedom. In the absence of the fluctuations associated with these degrees of freedom, the transition from the paramagnetic Fermi liquid (PMFL) to the ordered phase proceeds via a conventional second-order quantum phase transition. However, when the Griffiths anomalies due to the broad distribution of local energy scales are included, the transition is driven first-order via a novel mechanism for a fluctuation induced first-order transitio…
We study the nonequilibrium phase transition in the one-dimensional contact process with quenched spatial disorder by means of large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations for times up to $10^9$ and system sizes up to $10^7$ sites. In agreement with recent predictions of an infinite-randomness fixed point, our simulations demonstrate activated (exponential) dynamical scaling at the critical point. The critical behavior turns out to be universal, even for weak disorder. However, the approach to this asymptotic behavior is extremely slow, with crossover times of the order of $10^4$ or larger. In the Grif…
We study the influence of quenched disorder on quantum phase transitions in itinerant magnets with Heisenberg spin symmetry, paying particular attention to rare disorder fluctuations. In contrast to the Ising case where the overdamping suppresses the tunneling of the rare regions, the Heisenberg system displays strong power-law quantum Griffiths singularities in the vicinity of the quantum critical point. We discuss these phenomena based on general scaling arguments, and we illustrate them by an explicit calculation for O(N) spin symmetry in the large-N limit. We also discuss broad implication…
We introduce a spherical version of the frustrated Blume-Emery-Griffiths model and solve exactly the statics and the Langevin dynamics for zero particle-particle coupling (K=0). In this case the model exhibits an equilibrium transition from a disordered to a spin glass phase which is always continuous for nonzero temperature. The same phase diagram results from the study of the dynamics. Furthermore, we notice the existence of a nonequilibrium time regime in a region of the disordered phase, characterized by aging as occurs in the spin glass phase. Due to a finite equilibration time, the syste…
While the Gibbs states of spin glass models have been noted to have an erratic dependence on temperature, one may expect the mean over the disorder to produce a continuously varying ``quenched state''. The assumption of such continuity in temperature implies that in the infinite volume limit the state is stable under a class of deformations of the Gibbs measure. The condition is satisfied by the Parisi Ansatz, along with an even broader stationarity property. The stability conditions have equivalent expressions as marginal additivity of the quenched free energy. Implications of the continuity …
We employ scaling arguments and optimal fluctuation theory to establish a general relation between quantum Griffiths singularities and the Harris criterion for quantum phase transitions in disordered systems. If a clean critical point violates the Harris criterion, it is destabilized by weak disorder. At the same time, the Griffiths dynamical exponent $z'$ diverges upon approaching the transition, suggesting unconventional critical behavior. In contrast, if the Harris criterion is fulfilled, power-law Griffiths singularities can coexist with clean critical behavior but $z'$ saturates at a fini…
The short- and long-time dynamics of model systems undergoing a glass transition with apparent inversion of Kauzmann and dynamical arrest glass transition lines is investigated. These models belong to the class of the spherical mean-field approximation of a spin-$1$ model with $p$-body quenched disordered interaction, with $p>2$, termed spherical Blume-Emery-Griffiths models. Depending on temperature and chemical potential the system is found in a paramagnetic or in a glassy phase and the transition between these phases can be of a different nature. In specific regions of the phase diagram coe…
The ferromagnetic phase of an Ising model in d=3, with any amount of quenched antiferromagnetic bond randomness, is shown to undergo a transition to a spin-glass phase under sufficient quenched bond dilution. This general result, demonstrated here with the numerically exact renormalization-group solution of a d=3 hierarchical lattice, is expected to hold true generally, for the cubic lattice and for quenched site dilution. Conversely, in the ferromagnetic-spinglass-antiferromagnetic phase diagram, the spin-glass phase expands under quenched dilution at the expense of the ferromagnetic and anti…
In the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field model for spin glasses, we show that the quenched average of the free energy can be expressed through a couple of functional order parameters, in a form very similar to the one found in the frame of the replica symmetry breaking method. The functional order parameters are implicitely given in terms of fluctuations of thermodynamic variables. Under the assumption that the two order parameters can be chosen to be the same, in the thermodynamic limit, it is shown that the Parisi free energy is a rigorous upper bound for the free energy of the model.
We discuss mean field theory of glasses without quenched disorder focusing on the justification of the replica approach to thermodynamics. We emphasize the assumptions implicit in this method and discuss how they can be verified. The formalism is applied to the long range Ising model with orthogonal coupling matrix. We find the one step replica-symmetry breaking solution and show that it is stable in the intermediate temperature range that includes the glass state but excludes very low temperatures. At very low temperatures this solution becomes unstable and this approach fails.
By quenched-randomly mixing local units of different spatial dimensionalities, we have studied Ising spin-glass systems on hierarchical lattices continuously in dimensionalities 1 =< d =< 3. The global phase diagram in temperature, antiferromagnetic bond concentration, and spatial dimensionality is calculated. We find that, as dimension is lowered, the spin-glass phase disappears to zero temperature at the lower-critical dimension d_c=2.431. Our system being a physically realizable system, this sets an upper limit to the lower-critical dimension in general for the Ising spin-glass phase. As di…
We consider the p-spin spherical spin-glass model in the presence of an external magnetic field as a general example of a mean-field system where a one step replica symmetry breaking (1-RSB) occurs. In this context we compute the complexity of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer states, performing a quenched computation. We find what is the general connection between this method and the standard static 1-RSB one, formulating a clear mapping between the parameters used in the two different calculations. We also perform a dynamical analysis of the model, by which we confirm the validity of our results.
The left-right chiral and ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic double spin-glass clock model, with the crucially even number of states q=4 and in three dimensions d=3, has been studied by renormalization-group theory. We find, for the first time to our knowledge, four different spin-glass phases, including conventional, chiral, and quadrupolar spin-glass phases, and phase transitions between spin-glass phases. The chaoses, in the different spin-glass phases and in the phase transitions of the spin-glass phases with the other spin-glass phases, with the non-spin-glass ordered phases, and with the di…
We show theoretically that spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the pyrochlore oxide Y2Mo2O7, which is free of quenched disorder, can exhibit a simultaneous glass transition, working as dynamical randomness to each other. The interplay of spins and orbitals is mediated by the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion that selects the choice of orbitals, which then generates variant spin exchange interactions ranging from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic ones. Our Monte Carlo simulations detect the power-law divergence of the relaxation times and the negative divergence of both the magnetic and dielec…
We use the Popov-Fedotov representation of spin operators to construct an effective action for a Kondo lattice model with quenched disorder at finite temperatures. We study the competition between the Kondo effect and frozen spin order in Ising-like spin glass. We present the derivation of new mean-field equations for the spin-glass order parameter and analyze the effects of screening of localized spins by conduction electrons on the spin-glass phase transition.
We explore the possibility for translationally invariant quantum many-body systems to undergo a dynamical glass transition, at which ergodicity and translational invariance break down spontaneously, driven entirely by quantum effects. In contrast to analogous classical systems, where the existence of such an ideal glass transition remains a controversial issue, a genuine phase transition is predicted in the quantum regime. This ideal quantum glass transition can be regarded as a many-body localization transition due to self-generated disorder. Despite their lack of thermalization, these disord…
An important prediction of Mode-Coupling-Theory (MCT) is the relationship between the power- law decay exponents in the β regime. In the original structural glass context this relationship follows from the MCT equations that are obtained making rather uncontrolled approximations and λ has to be treated like a tunable parameter. It is known that a certain class of mean-field spin-glass models is exactly described by MCT equations. In this context, the physical meaning of the so called parameter exponent λ has recently been unveiled, giving a method to compute it exactly in a static framework. I…
We prove a correlation type inequality for spin systems with quenched symmetric random interactions. This gives monotonicity of the pressure with respect to the strength of the interaction for a class of spin glass models. Consequences include existence of the thermodynamic limit for the pressure and bounds on the surface pressure. We also describe other conjectured inequalities for such systems.
We present a numerical study on a disordered artificial spin-ice system which interpolates between the long-range ordered square ice and the fully degenerate shakti ice. Starting from the square-ice geometry, disorder is implemented by adding vertical/horizontal magnetic islands to the center of some randomly chosen square plaquettes of the array, at different densities. When no island is added we have ordered square ice. When all square plaquettes have been modified we obtain shakti ice, which is disordered yet in a topological phase corresponding to the Rys F-model. In between, geometrical f…
In this paper we study the 3d frustrated lattice gas model in the annealed version, where the disorder is allowed to evolve in time with a suitable kinetic constraint. Although the model does not exhibit any thermodynamic transition it shows a diverging peak at some characteristic time in the dynamical non-linear susceptibility, similar to the results on the p-spin model in mean field and Lennard-Jones mixture recently found by Donati et al. [cond-mat/9905433]. Comparing these results to those obtained in the model with quenched interactions, we conclude that the critical behavior of the dynam…
Quenched randomness can have a dramatic effect on the dynamics of isolated 1D quantum many-body systems, even for systems that thermalize. This is because transport, entanglement, and operator spreading can be hindered by `Griffiths' rare regions which locally resemble the many-body-localized phase and thus act as weak links. We propose coarse-grained models for entanglement growth and for the spreading of quantum operators in the presence of such weak links. We also examine entanglement growth across a single weak link numerically. We show that these weak links have a stronger effect on entan…
We comment on recent numerical experiments by G.Hed and E.Domany [cond-mat/0608535v2] on the quenched equilibrium state of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model. The rigorous proof of overlap identities related to replica equivalence shows that the observed violations of those identities on finite size systems must vanish in the thermodynamic limit. See also the successive version cond-mat/0608535v4
The Contact Process has been studied on complex networks exhibiting different kinds of quenched disorder. Numerical evidence is found for Griffiths phases and other rare region effects, in Erd\H os Rényi networks, leading rather generically to anomalously slow (algebraic, logarithmic,...) relaxation. More surprisingly, it turns out that Griffiths phases can also emerge in the absence of quenched disorder, as a consequence of sole topological heterogeneity in networks with finite topological dimension. In case of scale-free networks, exhibiting infinite topological dimension, slow dynamics can …
We consider interacting many particle systems with quenched disorder having strong Griffiths singularities, which are characterized by the dynamical exponent, z, such as random quantum systems and exclusion processes. In several d=1 and d=2 dimensional problems we have calculated the inverse time-scales, t^{-1}, in finite samples of linear size, L, either exactly or numerically. In all cases, having a discrete symmetry, the distribution function, P(t^{-1},L), is found to depend on the variable, u=t^{-1}L^{z/d}, and to be universal given by the limit distribution of extremes of independent and …
Correlation inequalities have played an essential role in the analysis of ferromagnetic models but have not been established in spin glass models. In this study, we obtain some correlation inequalities for the Ising models with quenched randomness, where the distribution of the interactions is symmetric. The acquired inequalities can be regarded as an extension of the previous results, which were limited to the local energy for a spin set, to the local energy for a pair of spin sets. Besides, we also obtain some correlation inequalities for asymmetric distribution.

We show that any SYK-like model with finite-body interactions among \textit{local} degrees of freedom, e.g., bosons or spins, has a fundamental difference from the standard fermionic model: the former fails to be described by an annealed free energy at low temperature. In this respect, such models more closely resemble spin glasses. We demonstrate this by two means: first, a general theorem proving that the annealed free energy is divergent at low temperature in any model with a tensor product Hilbert space; and second, a replica treatment of two prominent examples which exhibit phase transiti…
In this work we consider the {\em analog bipartite spin-glass} (or {\em real-valued restricted Boltzmann machine} in a neural network jargon), whose variables (those quenched as well as those dynamical) share standard Gaussian distributions. First, via Guerra's interpolation technique, we express its quenched free energy in terms of the natural order parameters of the theory (namely the self- and two-replica overlaps), then, we re-obtain the same result by using the replica-trick: a mandatory tribute, given the special occasion. Next, we show that the quenched free energy of this model is the …
We present two rigorous results on the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field model for spin glasses, proven by elementary methods, based on properties of fluctuations, with respect to the external quenched noise, of the thermodynamic variables and order parameters. The first result gives the uniform convergence of the quenched average of the free energy in the thermodynamic limit to its annealed approximation, in the high temperature regime, including the assumed critical point beta=1 in our notations. The second result shows that the free energy can be expressed through a functional order parame…
We study the impact of quenched disorder (random exchange couplings or site dilution) on easy-plane pyrochlore antiferromagnets. In the clean system, order-by-disorder selects a magnetically ordered state from a classically degenerate manifold. In the presence of randomness, however, different orders can be chosen locally depending on details of the disorder configuration. Using a combination of analytical considerations and classical Monte-Carlo simulations, we argue that any long-range-ordered magnetic state is destroyed beyond a critical level of randomness where the system breaks into magn…
The effect of quenched disorder on the low-energy properties of various antiferromagnetic spin ladder models is studied by a numerical strong disorder renormalization group method and by density matrix renormalization. For strong enough disorder the originally gapped phases with finite topological or dimer order become gapless. In these quantum Griffiths phases the scaling of the energy, as well as the singularities in the dynamical quantities are characterized by a finite dynamical exponent, z, which varies with the strength of disorder. At the phase boundaries, separating topologically disti…
In this paper we extend the earlier treatment of out-of-equilibrium mesoscopic fluctuations in glassy systems in several significant ways. First, via extensive simulations, we demonstrate that models of glassy behavior without quenched disorder display scalings of the probability of local two-time correlators that are qualitatively similar to that of models with short-ranged quenched interactions. The key ingredient for such scaling properties is shown to be the development of a critical-like dynamical correlation length, and not other microscopic details. This robust data collapse may be desc…
Purpose of this paper is to face up to P-spin glass and Gaussian P-spin model, i.e. spin glasses with polynomial interactions of degree P > 2. We consider the replica symmetry and first step of replica simmetry breaking assumptions and we solve the models via transport equation and Guerra's interpolating technique, showing that we reach the same results. \\ Thus, using rigorous approaches, we recover the same expression for quenched statistical pressure and self-consistency equation in both assumption found with other techniques, including the well-known \textit{replica trick} technique. \\ At…
Rare regions with weak disorder (Griffiths regions) have the potential to spoil localization. We describe a non-perturbative construction of local integrals of motion (LIOMs) for a weakly interacting spin chain in one dimension, under a physically reasonable assumption on the statistics of eigenvalues. We discuss ideas about the situation in higher dimensions, where one can no longer ensure that interactions involving the Griffiths regions are much smaller than the typical energy-level spacing for such regions. We argue that ergodicity is restored in dimension d > 1, although equilibration sho…
For a variety of quenched random spin systems on an Apollonian network, including ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic bond percolation and the Ising spin glass, we find the persistence of ordered phases up to infinite temperature over the entire range of disorder. We develop a renormalization-group technique that yields highly detailed information, including the exact distributions of local magnetizations and local spin-glass order parameters, which turn out to exhibit, as function of temperature, complex and distinctive tulip patterns.
We propose that glass-forming liquids are intrinsically under the influences of both fluctuating interactions and random fields well-known in the field of spin systems. This is due to the frustration between the isotropic and anisotropic parts of effective intermolecular interactions. Our model indicates the existence of two key temperatures relevant to glass transition, the density ordering point T^*_m and the Vogel-Fulcher temperature T_0. Between T^*_m and T_0, a system has features similar to the `Griffiths phase', while below $T_0$ it has those peculiar to the `spin-glass phase'. This pic…
Glass transition where viscosity of liquids increases dramatically upon decrease of temperature without any major change in structural properties, remains one of the most challenging problems in condensed matter physics (Cavagna, 2009; Berthier and Biroli, 2011) in spite of tremendous research efforts in last decades. On the other hand disordered freezing of spins in a magnetic materials with decreasing temperature, the so-called spin glass transition, is relatively better understood (Mezard, Parisi and Virasoro, 1987; Castellani and Cavagna, 2005). Previously found similarity between some spi…
We report results of molecular dynamics simulations of a binary Lennard-Jones system at zero pressure in the undercooled liquid and glassy states. We first follow the evolution of diffusivity and dynamic heterogeneity with temperature and show their correlation. In a second step we follow the ageing of a quenched glass. As diffusivity decreases with ageing, heterogeneity increases. We conclude that the heterogeneity is a property of the inherent diffusion of the relaxed state. The variations with aging time can be explained by annealing of quenched defect structures. This annealing has the sam…
