An important prediction of Mode-Coupling-Theory (MCT) is the relationship between the power- law decay exponents in the β regime. In the original structural glass context this relationship follows from the MCT equations that are obtained making rather uncontrolled approximations and λ has to be treated like a tunable parameter. It is known that a certain class of mean-field spin-glass models is exactly described by MCT equations. In this context, the physical meaning of the so called parameter exponent λ has recently been unveiled, giving a method to compute it exactly in a static framework. In this paper we exploit this new technique to compute the critical slowing down exponents in a class of mean-field Ising spin-glass models including, as special cases, the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, the p-spin model and the Random Orthogonal model.
We use a non-equilibrium simulation method to study the spin glass transition in three-dimensional Ising spin glasses. The transition point is repeatedly approached at finite velocity $v$ (temperature change versus time) in Monte Carlo simulations starting at a high temperature. The normally problematic critical slowing-down is not hampering this kind of approach, since the system equilibrates quickly at the initial temperature and the slowing-down is merely reflected in the dynamic scaling of the non-equilibrium order parameter with $v$ and the system size. The equilibrium limit does not have…
Critical slowing down dynamics of supercooled glass-forming liquids is usually understood at the mean-field level in the framework of Mode Coupling Theory, providing a two-time relaxation scenario and power-law behaviors of the time correlation function at dynamic criticality. In this work we derive critical slowing down exponents of spin-glass models undergoing discontinuous transitions by computing their Gibbs free energy and connecting the dynamic behavior to static "in-state" properties. Both the spherical and Ising versions are considered and, in the simpler spherical case, a generalizati…
By quenched-randomly mixing local units of different spatial dimensionalities, we have studied Ising spin-glass systems on hierarchical lattices continuously in dimensionalities 1 =< d =< 3. The global phase diagram in temperature, antiferromagnetic bond concentration, and spatial dimensionality is calculated. We find that, as dimension is lowered, the spin-glass phase disappears to zero temperature at the lower-critical dimension d_c=2.431. Our system being a physically realizable system, this sets an upper limit to the lower-critical dimension in general for the Ising spin-glass phase. As di…

The applications of nonequilbrium relations such as the Jarzynski equality and the fluctuation theorem to spin glasses are considered. The spin glass is a basic platform where we consider an application of an approximate solver of combinatorial optimization problems, simulated annealing. We find a novel relationship between an average through a nonequilibrium process where the temperature changes as in simulated annealing and a thermal average in equilibrium with different amounts of quenched randomness. The results shown in the present study may serve as an alternative way to overcome critica…
We discuss the metastate, a probability measure on thermodynamic states, and its usefulness in addressing difficult questions pertaining to the statistical mechanics of systems with quenched disorder, in particular short-range spin glasses. The possible low-temperature structures of realistic (i.e., short-range) spin glass models are described, and a number of fundamental open questions are presented.
For a model glass-former we demonstrate via computer simulations how macroscopic dynamic quantities can be inferred from a PEL analysis. The essential step is to consider whole superstructures of many PEL minima, called metabasins, rather than single minima. We show that two types of metabasins exist: some allowing for quasi-free motion on the PEL (liquid-like), the others acting as traps (solid-like). The activated, multi-step escapes from the latter metabasins are found to dictate the slowing down of dynamics upon cooling over a much broader temperature range than is currently assumed.
Spin glasses are magnetic systems exhibiting both quenched disorder and frustration, and have often been cited as examples of `complex systems.' In this talk I review some of the basic notions of spin glass physics, and discuss how some of our recent progress in understanding their properties might lead to new viewpoints of how they manifest `complexity'.
As shown by early studies on mean-field models of the glass transition, the geometrical features of the energy landscape provide fundamental information on the dynamical transition at the Mode-Coupling temperature $T_d$. We show that active particles can serve as a useful tool for gaining insight into the topological crossover in model glass-formers. In such systems the landmark of the minima-to-saddle transition in the potential energy landscape, taking place in the proximity of $T_d$, is the critical slowing down of dynamics. Nevertheless, the critical slowing down is a bottleneck for numeri…
The nonlinear rheological properties of dense suspensions are discussed within simplified models, suggested by a recent first principles approach to the model of Brownian particles in a constant-velocity-gradient solvent flow. Shear thinning of colloidal fluids and dynamical yielding of colloidal glasses arise from a competition between a slowing down of structural relaxation, because of particle interactions, and enhanced decorrelation of fluctuations, caused by the shear advection of density fluctuations. A mode coupling approach is developed to explore the shear-induced suppression of parti…
We study domain wall energies of two dimensional spin glasses. The scaling of these energies depends on the model's distribution of quenched random couplings, falling into three different classes. The first class is associated with the exponent theta =-0.28, the other two classes have theta = 0, as can be justified theoretically. In contrast to previous claims, we find that theta=0 does not indicate d=d_l but rather d <= d_l, where d_l is the lower critical dimension.
In this work we consider the {\em analog bipartite spin-glass} (or {\em real-valued restricted Boltzmann machine} in a neural network jargon), whose variables (those quenched as well as those dynamical) share standard Gaussian distributions. First, via Guerra's interpolation technique, we express its quenched free energy in terms of the natural order parameters of the theory (namely the self- and two-replica overlaps), then, we re-obtain the same result by using the replica-trick: a mandatory tribute, given the special occasion. Next, we show that the quenched free energy of this model is the …
We compute and analyze couples of ground states of 3D spin glass systems with the same quenched noise but periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions for different lattice sizes. We discuss the possible different behaviors of the system, we analyze the average link overlap, the probability distribution of window overlaps (among ground states computed with different boundary conditions) and the spatial overlap and link overlap correlation functions. We establish that the picture based on Replica Symmetry Breaking correctly describes the behavior of 3D Spin Glasses.
We study temperature chaos in a two-dimensional Ising spin glass with random quenched bimodal couplings, by an exact computation of the partition functions on large systems. We study two temperature correlators from the total free energy and from the domain wall free energy: in the second case we detect a chaotic behavior. We determine and discuss the chaos exponent and the fractal dimension of the domain walls.
We discuss mean field theory of glasses without quenched disorder focusing on the justification of the replica approach to thermodynamics. We emphasize the assumptions implicit in this method and discuss how they can be verified. The formalism is applied to the long range Ising model with orthogonal coupling matrix. We find the one step replica-symmetry breaking solution and show that it is stable in the intermediate temperature range that includes the glass state but excludes very low temperatures. At very low temperatures this solution becomes unstable and this approach fails.
Among the Renormalization Group Theory scaling rules relating critical exponents, there are hyperscaling rules involving the dimension of the system. It is well known that in Ising models hyperscaling breaks down above the upper critical dimension. It was shown by M. Schwartz [Europhys. Lett. {\bf 15}, 777 (1991)] that the standard Josephson hyperscaling rule can also break down in Ising systems with quenched random interactions. A related Renormalization Group Theory hyperscaling rule links the critical exponents for the normalized Binder cumulant and the correlation length in the thermodynam…
In equilibrium, disorder conspires with topological defects to redefine the ordered states of matter in systems as diverse as crystals, superconductors and liquid crystals. Far from equilibrium, however, the consequences of quenched disorder on active condensed matter remain virtually uncharted. Here, we reveal a state of strongly disordered active matter with no counterparts in equilibrium: a dynamical vortex glass. Combining high-content microfluidic experiments and theory, we show how colloidal flocks collectively cruise through disorder without relaxing the topological singularities of the…
We prove a correlation type inequality for spin systems with quenched symmetric random interactions. This gives monotonicity of the pressure with respect to the strength of the interaction for a class of spin glass models. Consequences include existence of the thermodynamic limit for the pressure and bounds on the surface pressure. We also describe other conjectured inequalities for such systems.
We present a general and powerful numerical method useful to study the density matrix of spin models. We apply the method to finite dimensional spin glasses, and we analyze in detail the four dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with Gaussian quenched random couplings. Our results clearly support the existence of replica symmetry breaking in the thermodynamical limit.
We study an influence of the quenched extended defects on the critical dynamics of the d=3-dimensional systems with m-component non-conserved order parameter (model A dynamics). Considering defects to be correlated in ε_d dimensions and randomly distributed in d-ε_d dimensions we obtain reliable numerical values for the critical exponents governing divergence of the relaxation time as function of m and ε_d.
In this topical review we discuss the nature of the low-temperature phase in both infinite-ranged and short-ranged spin glasses. We analyze the meaning of pure states in spin glasses, and distinguish between physical, or ``observable'', states and (probably) unphysical, ``invisible'' states. We review replica symmetry breaking, and describe what it would mean in short-ranged spin glasses. We introduce the notion of thermodynamic chaos, which leads to the metastate construct. We apply these tools to short-ranged spin glasses, and conclude that replica symmetry breaking, in any form, cannot desc…
Glass-forming liquids have been extensively studied in recent decades, but there is still no theory that fully describes these systems, and the diversity of treatments is in itself a barrier to understanding. Here we introduce a new simple model that (possessing both liquid-crystal and glass transition) unifies different approaches, producing most of the phenomena associated with real glasses, without loss of the simplicity that theorists require. Within the model we calculate energy relaxation, non-exponential slowing phenomena, the Kauzmann temperature and other classical signatures. Moreove…
We present results of numerical simulations on a one-dimensional Ising spin glass with long-range interactions. Parameters of the model are chosen such that it is a proxy for a short-range spin glass above the upper critical dimension (i.e. in the mean-field regime). The system is quenched to a temperature well below the transition temperature $T_c$ and the growth of correlations is observed. The spatial decay of the correlations at distances less than the dynamic correlation length $ξ(t)$ agrees quantitatively with the predictions of a static theory, the "metastate", evaluated according to th…
We map the problem of diffusion in the quenched trap model onto a new stochastic process: Brownian motion which is terminated at the coverage "time" ${\cal S}_α=\sum_{x=-\infty} ^\infty (n_x)^α$ with $n_x$ being the number of visits to site $x$. Here $0<α=T/T_g<1$ is a measure of the disorder in the original model. This mapping allows us to treat the intricate correlations in the underlying random walk in the random environment. The operational "time" ${\cal S}_α$ is changed to laboratory time $t$ with a Lévy time transformation. Investigation of Brownian motion stopped at "time" ${\cal S}_α$ …
We comment on recent numerical experiments by G.Hed and E.Domany [cond-mat/0608535v2] on the quenched equilibrium state of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model. The rigorous proof of overlap identities related to replica equivalence shows that the observed violations of those identities on finite size systems must vanish in the thermodynamic limit. See also the successive version cond-mat/0608535v4
We have investigated the interrelation between the spin glasses and the structural glasses. Spin glasses in this case are random magnets without reflection symmetry (e.g. $p$ - spin interaction spin glasses and Potts glasses) which contain quenched disorder, whereas the structural glasses are here exemplified by the homopolymeric globule, which can be viewed as a liquid of connected molecules on nano scales. It is argued that the homopolymeric globule problem can be mapped onto a disorder field theoretical model whose effective Hamiltonian resembles the corresponding one for the spin glass mod…
Glass transition where viscosity of liquids increases dramatically upon decrease of temperature without any major change in structural properties, remains one of the most challenging problems in condensed matter physics (Cavagna, 2009; Berthier and Biroli, 2011) in spite of tremendous research efforts in last decades. On the other hand disordered freezing of spins in a magnetic materials with decreasing temperature, the so-called spin glass transition, is relatively better understood (Mezard, Parisi and Virasoro, 1987; Castellani and Cavagna, 2005). Previously found similarity between some spi…

We study the probability distribution of the pseudo-critical temperature in a mean-field and in a short-range spin-glass model: the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) and the Edwards-Anderson (EA) model. In both cases, we put in evidence the underlying connection between the fluctuations of the pseudo-critical point and and the Extreme Value Statistics of random variables. For the SK model, both with Gaussian and binary couplings, the distribution of the pseudo-critical temperature is found to be the Tracy-Widom distribution. For the EA model, the distribution is found to be the Gumbel distribution.…
The critical properties of short-range Ising spin-glass models, defined on a diamond hierarchical lattice of graph fractal dimension $d_{f}=2.58$, 3, and 4, and scaling factor 2 are studied via a method based on the Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization-group scheme. The order parameter critical exponent $β$ is directly estimated from the data of the local Edwards- Anderson (EA) order parameter, obtained through an exact recursion procedure. The scaling of the EA order parameter, leading to estimates of the $ν$ exponent of the correlation length is also performed. Four distinct initial distributions…
In this work we give a proof of universality with respect to the choice of the statistical distribution of the quenched noise, for mean field bipartite spin glasses. We use mainly techniques of spin glasses theory, as Guerra's interpolation and the cavity approach. As a direct conseguence of our results, we have a proof of convergence in the sup norm of the free energy of the Hopfield Model to its expectation value.
The stability to dislocations of the elastic phase, or ``Bragg glass'', of a randomly pinned elastic medium in two dimensions is studied using the minimum-cost-flow algorithm for a disordered fully-packed loop model. The elastic phase is found to be unstable to dislocations due to the quenched disorder. The energetics of dislocations are discussed within the framework of renormalization group predictions as well as in terms of a domain wall picture.
We derive expressions for the shear modulus of deeply-quenched, glassy solids, in terms of a Cauchy-Born free energy expansion around a rigid (quenched) reference state, following the approach due to Alexander [Alexander, Phys. Rep. 296, 1998]. Continuum-limit explicit expressions of the shear modulus are derived starting from the microscopic Hamiltonians of central and bond-bending interactions. The applicability of the expressions to dense covalent glasses as well as colloidal glasses with strongly attractive and adhesive bonds is discussed.
The Ising spin-glasses are investigated on three dual pairs of hierarchical lattices, using exact renormalization-group transformation of the quenched bond probability distribution. The goal is to investigate a recent conjecture which relates, on such pairs of dual lattices, the locations of the multicritical points, which occur on the Nishimori symmetry line. Towards this end we precisely determine the global phase diagrams for these six hierarchical spin-glasses, using up to 2.5 x 10^9 probability bins to represent the quenched distribution subjected to an exact renormalization-group transfo…
After a brief introduction to the dynamics of supercooled liquids, we discuss some of the advantages and drawbacks of computer simulations of such systems. Subsequently we present the results of computer simulations in which the dynamics of a fragile glass former, a binary Lennard-Jones system, is compared to the one of a strong glass former, SiO_2. This comparison gives evidence that the reason for the different temperature dependence of these two types of glass formers lies in the transport mechanism for the particles in the vicinity of T_c, the critical temperature of mode-coupling theory. …
We show that any SYK-like model with finite-body interactions among \textit{local} degrees of freedom, e.g., bosons or spins, has a fundamental difference from the standard fermionic model: the former fails to be described by an annealed free energy at low temperature. In this respect, such models more closely resemble spin glasses. We demonstrate this by two means: first, a general theorem proving that the annealed free energy is divergent at low temperature in any model with a tensor product Hilbert space; and second, a replica treatment of two prominent examples which exhibit phase transiti…
We apply the method of gauge transformation to spin glasses under the microcanonical ensemble to study the possibility of ensemble inequivalence in systems with long-range interactions and quenched disorder. It is proved that all the results derived under the canonical ensemble on the Nishimori line (NL) can be reproduced by the microcanonical ensemble irrespective of the range of interactions. This establishes that ensemble inequivalence should take place away from the NL if it happens in spin glasses. It is also proved on the NL that the microcanonical configurational average of the energy a…
In these two lectures I review our theoretical understanding of spin glasses paying a particular attention to the basic physical ideas. We introduce the replica method and we describe its probabilistic consequences (we stress the recently discovered importance of stochastic stability). We show that the replica method is not restricted to systems with quenched disorder. We present the consequences on the dynamics of the system when it slows approaches equilibrium are presented: they are confirmed by large scale simulations, while we are still awaiting for a direct experimental

Shortened abstract: A mean field theory of long range frustration is constructed for spin glass systems with quenched randomness of vertex--vertex connections and of spin--spin coupling strengths. This theory is applied to a spin glass model of the random $K$-satisfiability problem (K=2 or K=3). The zero--temperature phase diagram of the $\pm J$ Viana--Bray model is also determined, which is identical to that of the random 2-SAT problem. The predicted phase transition between a non-frustrated and a long--rangely frustrated spin glass phase might also be observable in real materials at a finite…
We present a many body approach for non-equilibrium behavior and self-generated glassiness in strongly correlated quantum systems. It combines the dynamical mean field theory of equilibrium systems with the replica theory for classical glasses without quenched disorder. We apply this approach to study a quantized version of the Brazovskii model and find a self-generated quantum glass that remains in a quantum mechanically mixed state as T -> 0. This quantum glass is formed by a large number of competing states spread over an energy region which is determined within our theory.

The variational principle (VP) has been used to capture the metastable states of a glass-forming molecular system without quenched disorder. It has been shown that VP naturally leads to a self-consistent random field Ginzburg-Landau model (RFGLM). In the framework of one-step replica symmetry breaking (1-RSB) the general solution of RFGLM is discussed in the vicinity of the spinodal temperature T_{A} in terms of ``hidden'' formfactors $\tilde g(k)$, g_{0}(k) and $Δ(k)$. The self-generated disorder spontaneously arises. It is argued that at T < T_{A} the activated dynamics is dominant.
We introduce a hierarchical class of approximations of the random Ising spin glass in $d$ dimensions. The attention is focused on finite clusters of spins where the action of the rest of the system is properly taken into account. At the lower level (cluster of a single spin) our approximation coincides with the SK model while at the highest level it coincides with the true $d$-dimensional system. The method is variational and it uses the replica approach to spin glasses and the Parisi ansatz for the order parameter. As a result we have rigorous bounds for the quenched free energy which become …
Large numbers of ground states of two-dimensional Ising spin glasses with periodic boundary conditions in both directions are calculated for sizes up to 40^2. A combination of a genetic algorithm and Cluster-Exact Approximation is used. For each quenched realization of the bonds up to 40 independent ground states are obtained. For the infinite system a ground-state energy of e=-1.4015(3) is extrapolated. The ground-state landscape is investigated using a finite-size scaling analysis of the distribution of overlaps. The mean-field picture assuming a complex landscape describes the situation bet…
We explore the possibility for translationally invariant quantum many-body systems to undergo a dynamical glass transition, at which ergodicity and translational invariance break down spontaneously, driven entirely by quantum effects. In contrast to analogous classical systems, where the existence of such an ideal glass transition remains a controversial issue, a genuine phase transition is predicted in the quantum regime. This ideal quantum glass transition can be regarded as a many-body localization transition due to self-generated disorder. Despite their lack of thermalization, these disord…
We have compared aging phenomena in the Fe_{0.5}Mn_{0.5}TiO_3 Ising spin glass and in the CdCr_{1.7}In_{0.3}S_4 Heisenberg-like spin glass by means of low-frequency ac susceptibility measurements. At constant temperature, aging obeys the same `$ωt$ scaling' in both samples as in other systems. Investigating the effect of temperature variations, we find that the Ising sample exhibits rejuvenation and memory effects which are qualitatively similar to those found in other spin glasses, indicating that the existence of these phenomena does not depend on the dimensionality of the spins. However, sy…
We have examined the nonconventional spin glass phase of the 2-dimensional kagome antiferromagnet (H_3 O) Fe_3 (SO_4)_2 (OH)_6 by means of ac and dc magnetic measurements. The frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility peak is characteristic of a critical slowing down at Tg ~ 18K. At fixed temperature below Tg, aging effects are found which obey the same scaling law as in spin glasses or polymers. However, in clear contrast with conventional spin glasses, aging is remarkably insensitive to temperature changes. This particular type of dynamics is discussed in relation with theoretical predic…
We introduce a new method, based on the recently developed random tensor theory, to study the p-spin glass model with non-Gaussian, correlated disorder. Using a suitable generalization of Gurau's theorem on the universality of the large N limit of the p-unitary ensemble of random tensors, we exhibit an infinite family of such non-Gaussian distributions which leads to same low temperature phase as the Gaussian distribution. While this result is easy to show (and well known) for uncorrelated disorder, its robustness with respect to strong quenched correlations is surprising. We show in detail ho…
Network glasses are the physical prototype for many self-organized systems, ranging from proteins to computer science. Conventional theories of gases, liquids, and crystals do not account for the strongly material-selective character of the glass-forming tendency, the phase diagrams of glasses, or their optimizable properties. A new topological theory, only 25 years old, has succeeded where conventional theories have failed. It shows that (probably all slowly quenched) glasses, including network glasses, are the result of the combined effects of a few simple mechanisms. These glass-forming mec…
We propose a duality analysis for obtaining the critical manifold of two-dimensional spin glasses. Our method is based on the computation of quenched free energies with periodic and twisted periodic boundary conditions on a finite basis. The precision can be systematically improved by increasing the size of the basis, leading to very fast convergence towards the thermodynamic limit. We apply the method to obtain the phase diagrams of the random-bond Ising model and $q$-state Potts gauge glasses. In the Ising case, the Nishimori point is found at $p_N = 0.10929 \pm 0.00002$, in agreement with a…
We investigate numerically the dynamics of three different spin models in the aging regime. Each of these models is meant to be representative of a distinct class of aging behavior: coarsening systems, discontinuous spin glasses, and continuous spin glasses. In order to study dynamic heterogeneities induced by quenched disorder, we consider single-spin observables for a given disorder realization. In some simple cases we are able to provide analytical predictions for single-spin response and correlation functions. The results strongly depend upon the model considered. It turns out that, by com…
