At scattered places in his first notebook, Ramanujan recorded the values for 107 class invariants or irreducible monic polynomials satisfied by them. On pages 294-299 in his second notebook, he gave a table of values for 77 class invariants $G_n$ and $g_n$ in his second notebook. Traditionally, $G_n$ is determined for odd values of $n$ and $g_n$ for even values of $n$. On pages 338 and 339 in his first notebook, Ramanujan defined the remarkable product of theta-functions $a_{m, n}$. Also, he recorded eighteen explicit values depending on two parameters, namely, $m$, and $n$, where these are odd integers. In this paper, we initiate to study explicit evaluations of $G_n$ for even values of $n$. We establish a new general formula for the explicit evaluations of $G_n$ involving class invariant $g_n$. For this purpose, we derive a new P-Q modular equation of degree two. Further application of this modular equation, we establish a new formula to explicit evaluation of $a_{m, 2}$. Also, we compute several explicit values of class invariant $g_{n}$ and singular moduli $α_n$.
The aim of this paper is to show lifts from pairs of two elliptic modular forms to Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of even degree under the assumption that the constructed Siegel modular form is not identically zero. The key of the proof is to introduce a certain generalization of the Maass relation for Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of general degree.
We will study modular Abelian varieties with odd congruence numbers, by studying the cuspidal subgroup of $J_0(N)$. We show the conductor of such Abelian varieties must be of a special type, for example if $N$ is odd then $N=p^α$ or $N=pq$ for some prime $p$ and $q$. We then focus our attention to modular elliptic curves, and using result of Agashe, Ribet, and Stein, we try to classify all elliptic curves of odd modular degree. Our studies prove many cases of the Stein and Watkins's conjecture on elliptic curves with odd modular degree.
We give two congruence properties of Hermitian modular forms of degree 2 over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$. The one is a congruence criterion for Hermitian modular forms which is generalization of Sturm's theorem. Another is the well-definedness of the $p$-adic weight for Hermitian modular forms.
In this paper, we will study modular Abelian varieties with odd congruence numbers by examining the cuspidal subgroup of $J_0(N)$. We will show that the conductor of such Abelian varieties must be of a special type. For example, if $N$ is the conductor of an absolutely simple modular Abelian variety with an odd congruence number, then $N$ has at most two prime divisors, and if $N$ is odd, then $N=p^α$ or $N=pq$ for some prime $p$ and $q$. In the second half of this paper, we will focus on modular elliptic curves with odd modular degree. Our results, combined with the work of Agashe, Ribet, and…
We construct a ring of meromorphic Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and level 5, with singularities supported on an arrangement of Humbert surfaces, which is generated by four singular theta lifts of weights 1, 1, 2, 2 and their Jacobian. We use this to prove that the ring of holomorphic Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and level $Γ_0(5)$ is minimally generated by eighteen modular forms of weights 2, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6, 10, 11, 11, 11, 13, 13, 13, 15.
This paper is a continuation of our previous works (see Muić in Monatsh. Math. 180, no. 3, 607--629, (2016)) and (Muić, Kodrnja in Ramanujan J. 55, no. 2, 393--420, (2021)) where we have studied maps from $X_0(N)$ into $\mathbb P^2$ (and more general) constructed via modular forms of the same weight. In this short note we study how degrees of the maps and degrees of the resulting curve change when we let modular forms vary.
Unlike classical modular forms, there is currently no general way to implement the computation of Siegel modular forms of arbitrary weight, level and character, even in degree two. There is however, a way to do it in a unified way. After providing a survey of known computations we describe the implementation of a class modeling Siegel modular forms of degree two in Sage. In particular, we describe algorithms to compute a variety of rings of Siegel modular forms, many of which are implemented in our class. A wide variety of Siegel modular forms (e.g., both vector- and scalar-valued) can be mode…
We determine the structure over $\mathbb{Z}$ of the ring of symmetric Hermitian modular forms with respect to $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-1})$ of degree $2$ (with a character), whose Fourier coefficients are integers. Namely, we give a set of generators consisting of $24$ modular forms. As an application of our structure theorem, we give the Sturm bounds of such the modular forms of weight $k$ with $4\mid k$, in the case $p=2$, $3$. We remark that the bounds for $p\ge 5$ are already known.
In the proposed work, we establish a total of six new $P$--$Q$ modular equations involving theta--function $f(-q)$ with moduli of orders 1, 3, 7 and 21.These equations can be regarded as modular identities in the alternate theory of signature 3. As a consequence, several values of quotients of theta--function are evaluated.
In his second notebook, Ramanujan recorded total of 23 P-Q modular equations involving theta-functions $f(-q)$, $φ(q)$ and $ψ(q)$. In this paper, modular equations analogous to those recorded by Ramanujan are obtained involving $f(-q)$. As a consequence, values of certain quotients of theta-function are evaluated.
The modular degree m_E of an elliptic curve E/Q is the minimal degree of any surjective morphism X_0(N) -> E, where N is the conductor of E. We give a necessarily set of criteria for m_E to be odd. Specializing to N prime our results imply a conjecture of Mark Watkins. As a technical tool we also prove a certain multiplicity one result for p=2 that may be of independent interest.

We determine the ring structure of Siegel modular forms of degree g modulo a prime p, extending Nagaoka's result in the case of degree g=2. We characterize U(p) congruences of Jacobi forms and Siegel modular forms, and surprisingly find different behaviors of Siegel modular forms of even and odd degrees.
Hashimoto and Ueda determined the weights of generators of the graded ring of modular forms on the Cayley half-space of degree two. In this paper we describe explicit generators. We show that the graded ring can be generated by Eisenstein series by calculating the dimensions of the homogeneous components. Moreover we give two distinct constructions for the skew-symmetric form of weight 252.
We correct the proof of the theorem in the previous paper presented by the first named author, which concerns Sturm bounds for Siegel modular forms of degree $2$ and of even weights modulo a prime number dividing $2\cdot 3$. We give also Sturm bounds for them of odd weights for any prime numbers, and we prove their sharpness. The results cover the case where Fourier coefficients are algebraic numbers.
We derive an explicit zero-free region for symmetric square L-functions of elliptic curves, and use this to derive an explicit lower bound for the modular degree of rational elliptic curves. The techniques are similar to those used in the classical derivation of zero-free regions for Dirichlet L-functions, but here, due to the work of Goldfield-Hoffstein-Lieman, we know that there are no Siegel zeros, which leads to a strengthened result.
Ramanujan in his second notebook recorded total of seven $P$--$Q$ modular equations involving theta--function $f(-q)$ with moduli of orders 1, 3, 5 and 15. In this paper, modular equations analogous to those recorded by Ramanujan are obtained involving his theta--functions $φ(q)$ and $ψ(-q)$ with moduli of orders 1, 3, 5 and 15. As a consequence, several values of quotients of theta--function and a continued fraction of order 12 are explicitly evaluated.
We attempt to generalize a congruence property of elliptic modular forms proved by Sturm to that of Haupttypus of Siegel modular forms of degree 2 with level. Namely, we give an explicit bound of Fourier coefficients required to determine the congruence of modular forms. We give the analog of Sturm's theorem for Jacobi forms, which is required in the proof. In the case that Nebentypus of Siegel modular forms with prime level, in order to prove the congruence between two modular forms, we show that it suffices to check the congruence of the finitely many Fourier coefficients. Finally, we give t…
We prove a formula of Petersson's type for Fourier coefficients of Siegel cusp forms of degree 2 with respect to congruence subgroups, and as a corollary, show upper bound estimates of individual Fourier coefficient. The method in this paper is essentially a generalization of Kitaoka's previous work which studied the full modular case, but some modification is necessary to obtain estimates which are sharp with respect to the level aspect.
We prove an equidistribution statement for the Satake parameters of the local representations attached to Siegel cusp forms of degree $2$ of increasing level and weight, counted with a certain arithmetic weight. We then apply this to compute the symmetry type of a similarly weighted distribution of the low-lying zeros of $L$-functions attached to these cusp forms.
The Rankin convolution type Dirichlet series $D_{F,G}(s)$ of Siegel modular forms $F$ and $G$ of degree two, which was introduced by Kohnen and the second author, is computed numerically for various $F$ and $G$. In particular, we prove that the series $D_{F,G}(s)$, which share the same functional equation and analytic behavior with the spinor $L$-functions of eigenforms of the same weight are not linear combinations of those. In order to conduct these experiments a numerical method to compute the Petersson scalar products of Jacobi Forms is developed and discussed in detail.
We define modular equations in the setting of PEL Shimura varieties as equations describing Hecke correspondences, and prove upper bounds on their degrees and heights. This extends known results about elliptic modular polynomials, and implies complexity bounds for number-theoretic algorithms using these modular equations. In particular, we obtain tight degree bounds for modular equations of Siegel and Hilbert type for abelian surfaces.
This article proves that Tate classes on Siegel modular 3-folds are spanned by the images of Hilbert modular surfaces at degree 2 and by the images of Shimura curves at degree 4. The proof involves a careful study of the period pairing between degree-4 rapidly decreasing cohomological forms and Hilbert modular surfaces.
This is a survey based on the construction of Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and 3 using invariant theory in joint work with Fabien Cléry and Carel Faber.
In this paper we will describe all vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and weight ${\rm Sym}^6({\rm St}) \otimes \det^{k}({\rm St})$ with $k$ odd. These vector-valued forms constitute a module over the ring of classical Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and even weight and this module turns out to be free. In order to find generators, we generalize certain Rankin-Cohen differential operators on triples of classical Siegel modular forms that were first considered by Ibukiyama and we find a Rankin-Cohen bracket on vector-valued Siegel modular forms.
A well-known observation of Serre and Tate is that the Hecke algebra acts locally nilpotently on modular forms mod 2 on $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We give an algorithm for calculating the degree of Hecke nilpotency for cusp forms, and we obtain a formula for the total number of cusp forms mod 2 of any given degree of nilpotency. Using these results, we find that the degrees of Hecke nilpotency in spaces $M_k$ have no limiting distribution as $k \rightarrow \infty$. As an application, we study the parity of the partition function using Hecke nilpotency.
We survey the theory of vector-valued modular forms and their connections with modular differential equations and Fuchsian equations over the three-punctured sphere. We present a number of numerical examples showing how the theory in dimensions 2 and 3 leads naturally to close connections between modular forms and hypergeometric series.
We use covariants of binary sextics to describe the structure of modules of scalar-valued or vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree 2 with character, over the ring of scalar-valued Siegel modular forms of even weight. For a modular form defined by a covariant we express the order of vanishing along the locus of products of elliptic curves in terms of the covariant.
We formulate a conjecture that describes the vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and level 2 of weight Sym^j det^2 and provide some evidence for it. We construct such modular forms of weight (j,2) via covariants of binary sextics and calculate their Fourier expansions illustrating the effectivity of the approach via covariants. Two appendices contain related results of Chenevier; in particular a proof of the fact that every modular form of degree 2 and level 2 and weight (j,1) vanishes.
The standard approach to evaluate Hecke eigenvalues of a Siegel modular eigenform F is to determine a large number of Fourier coefficients of F and then compute the Hecke action on those coefficients. We present a new method based on the numerical evaluation of F at explicit points in the upper-half space and of its image under the Hecke operators. The approach is more efficient than the standard method and has the potential for further optimization by identifying good candidates for the points of evaluation, or finding ways of lowering the truncation bound. A limitation of the algorithm is th…
It is a classical fact that the elliptic modular functions satisfies an algebraic differential equation of order 3, and none of lower order. We show how this generalizes to Siegel modular functions of arbitrary degree. The key idea is that the partial differential equations they satisfy are governed by Gauss--Manin connections, whose monodromy groups are well-known. Modular theta functions provide a concrete interpretation of our result, and we study their differential properties in detail in the case of degree 2.
Let E/Q be a real quadratic field and pi_0 a cuspidal, irreducible, automorphic representation of GL(2,A_E) with trivial central character and infinity type (2,2n+2) for some non-negative integer n. We show that there exists a non-zero Siegel paramodular newform F with weight, level, Hecke eigenvalues, epsilon factor and L-function determined explicitly by pi_0. We tabulate these invariants in terms of those of pi_0 for every rational prime p.
We prove Ibukiyama's conjectures on Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight and of degree 2 by using Arthur's multiplicity formula on the split odd special orthogonal group $\SO_5$ and Gan-Ichino's multiplicity formula on the metaplectic group $\Mp_4$. In the proof, the representation theory of the Jacobi groups also plays an important role.
We consider a few modifications of the Big prime modular $\gcd$ algorithm for polynomials in $\Z[x]$. Our modifications are based on bounds of degrees of modular common divisors of polynomials, on estimates of the number of prime divisors of a resultant and on finding preliminary bounds on degrees of common divisors using auxiliary primes. These modifications are used to suggest improved algorithms for $\gcd$ calculation and for coprime polynomials detection. To illustrate the ideas we apply the constructed algorithms on certain polynomials, in particular, on polynomials from Knuth's example o…
Let $E_n$ be the Siegel Eisenstein series of degree $n$ and weight $k$ with a complex parameter $s$. In this paper, using a differential operator $D$ by Ibukiyama which sends a scalar valued Siegel modular form to the tensor product of two vector valued Siegel modular forms, under a certain condition, we give a formula of $DE_{p+q}$ on $H_p\times H_q$, where $H_n$ is the Siegel upper half space of degree $n$. Furthermore, we give some applications of this formula, i.e., analytic properies of standard $L$-functions and the Klingen Eisenstein series and algebraicity results for Siegel modular fo…
The classical modular equations involve bivariate polynomials that can be seen to be univariate with coefficients in the modular invariant $j$. Kiepert found modular equations relating some $η$-quotients and the Weber functions $γ_2$ and $γ_3$. In the present work, we extend this idea to double $η$-quotients and characterize all the parameters leading to this kind of equation. We give some properties of these equations, explain how to compute them and give numerical examples.
We give a procedure to determine equations for the modular curves $X_0(N)$ which are bielliptic and equations for the 30 values of $N$ such that $X_0(N)$ is bielliptic and nonhyperelliptic are presented.
In the classical setting, the modular equation of level $N$ for the modular curve $X_0(1)$ is the polynomial relation satisfied by $j(τ)$ and $j(Nτ)$, where $j(τ)$ is the standard elliptic $j$-function. In this paper, we will describe a method to compute modular equations in the setting of Shimura curves. The main ingredient is the explicit method for computing Hecke operators on the spaces of modular forms on Shimura curves developed in [13].
We determine conditions for the existence and non-existence of Ramanujan-type congruences for Jacobi forms. We extend these results to Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and as an application, we establish Ramanujan-type congruences for explicit examples of Siegel modular forms.
We construct plane models of the modular curve $X_H(\ell)$, and use their explicit equations to compute Galois representations associated to modular forms for values of $\ell$ that are significantly higher than in prior works.
We extend Igusa's description of the relation between invariants of binary sextics and Siegel modular forms of degree two to a relation between covariants and vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree two. We show how this relation can be used to effectively calculate the Fourier expansions of Siegel modular forms of degree two.
This paper provides some statistics for the coefficients of Russell- Type modular equations for the modular function, λ(τ). The results hold uniformly for all odd primes. They do not rely on any numerical evaluations of coefficients of q expansions of λ. The method relies on an internal structure of the coefficients of λ expressed in terms of multiplicative functions defined on integer partitions. The method may be extended to other types of modular equations.
