The sequence $A(n)_{n \geq 0}$ of Apéry numbers can be interpolated to $\mathbb{C}$ by an entire function. We give a formula for the Taylor coefficients of this function, centered at the origin, as a $\mathbb{Z}$-linear combination of multiple zeta values. We then show that for integers $n$ whose base-$p$ digits belong to a certain set, $A(n)$ satisfies a Lucas congruence modulo $p^2$.
Using generalized binomial coefficients with respect to fundamental Lucas sequences we establish congruences that generalize the classical congruence of Wolstenholme and other related stronger congruences.
For each of the $15$ known sporadic Apéry-like sequences, we prove congruences modulo $p^2$ that are natural extensions of the Lucas congruences modulo $p$. This extends a result of Gessel for the numbers used by Apéry in his proof of the irrationality of $ζ(3)$. Moreover, we show that each of these sequences satisfies two-term supercongruences modulo $p^{2r}$. Using special constant term representations recently discovered by Gorodetsky, we prove these supercongruences in the two cases that remained previously open.
Let $P,Q\in\Bbb Z$, $U_0=0,\ U_1=1$ and $U_{n+1}=PU_n-QU_{n+1}$. In this paper we obtain a general congruence for $U_{kmn^r}/U_k\pmod {n^{r+1}}$, where $k,m,n,r$ are positive integers. As applications we extend Lucas' law of repetition and characterize the square prime factors of $a^n+1$ or $S_n$, where $\{S_n\}$ is given by $S_1=P^2+2$ and $S_{k+1}=S_k^2-2\ (k\ge 1)$.
Let $p$ be a prime. In 1878 É. Lucas proved that the congruence $$ {p-1\choose k}\equiv (-1)^k\pmod{p}$$ holds for any nonnegative integer $k\in\{0,1,\ldots,p-1\}$. The converse statement was given in Problem 1494 of {\it Mathematics Magazine} proposed in 1997 by E. Deutsch and I.M. Gessel. In this note we generalize this converse assertion by the following result: If $n>1$ and $q>1$ are integers such that $$ {n-1\choose k}\equiv (-1)^k \pmod{q}$$ for every integer $k\in\{0,1,\ldots, n-1\}$, then $q$ is a prime and $n$ is a power of $q$.
In 1878 É. Lucas proved a remarkable result which provides a simple way to compute the binomial coefficient ${n\choose m}$ modulo a prime $p$ in terms of the binomial coefficients of the base-$p$ digits of $n$ and $m$: {\it If $p$ is a prime, $n=n_0+n_1p+\cdots +n_sp^s$ and $m=m_0+m_1p+\cdots +m_sp^s$ are the $p$-adic expansions of nonnegative integers $n$ and $m$, then \begin{equation*} {n\choose m}\equiv \prod_{i=0}^{s}{n_i\choose m_i}\pmod{p}. \end{equation*}} The above congruence, the so-called {\it Lucas' theorem} (or {\it Theorem of Lucas}), plays an important role in Number Theory and C…
We observe that a sequence satisfies Lucas congruences modulo $p$ if and only if its values modulo $p$ can be described by a linear $p$-scheme, as introduced by Rowland and Zeilberger, with a single state. This simple observation suggests natural generalizations of the notion of Lucas congruences. To illustrate this point, we prove explicit generalized Lucas congruences for integer sequences that can be represented as the constant terms of $P(x,y)^n Q(x,y)$ where $P$ and $Q$ are certain Laurent polynomials.
In [16], we obtained some congruences for Lucas quotients of two infinite families of Lucas sequences by studying the combinatorial sum $$\sum_{k\equiv r(\mbox{mod}m)}{n\choose k}a^k.$$ In this paper, we show that the sum can be expressed in terms of some recurrent sequences with orders not exceeding $φ{(m)}$ and give some new congruences.
Let $p$ be a prime, and let $k,n,m,n_0$ and $m_0$ be nonnegative integers such that $k\ge 1$, and $_0$ and $m_0$ are both less than $p$. K. Davis and W. Webb established that for a prime $p\ge 5$ the following variation of Lucas' Theorem modulo prime powers holds $$ {np^k +n_0 \choose mp^k+m_0}\equiv{np^{\lfloor(k-1)/3\rfloor} \choose mp^{\lfloor(k-1)/3\rfloor}} {n_0 \choose m_0} \pmod{p^k}. $$ In the proof the authors used their earlier result that present a generalized version of Lucas' Theorem. In this paper we present a a simple inductive proof of the above congruence. Our proof is based o…
In this paper we obtain some congruences involving central binomial coefficients and Lucas sequences. For example, we show that if p>5 is a prime then $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_k*binom(2k,k)/12^k$ is congruent to 0,1,-1 modulo p according as p=1,4 (mod 5), p=13,17 (mod 30), and p=7,23 (mod 30) respectively, where {F_n} is the Fibonacci sequence. We also raise several conjectures.
We develop a new method for proving algebraic independence of $G$-functions. Our approach rests on the following observation: $G$-functions do not always come with a single linear differential equation, but also sometimes with an infinite family of linear difference equations associated with the Frobenius that are obtained by reduction modulo prime ideals. When these linear difference equations have order one, the coefficients of the $G$-function satisfy congruences reminiscent of a classical theorem of Lucas on binomial coefficients. We use this to derive a Kolchin-like algebraic independence…
Let p be any prime and a be a positive integer. For nonnegative integers l,n and an integer r, the normalized cyclotomic $ψ$-coefficient $${n,r}_{l,p^a}:=p^{-[(n-p^{a-1}-lp^a)/(p^{a-1}(p-1))]} \sum_{k=r(mod p^a)}(-1)^k{n \choose k}{{(k-r)/p^a} \choose l}$$ is known to be an integer. In this paper, we show that this coefficient behaves like binomial coefficients and satisfies some Lucas-type congruences. This implies that a congruence of Wan is often optimal, and two conjectures of Sun and Davis are true.
In this note we prove that {equation*} {np^s\choose mp^s+r}\equiv (-1)^{r-1}r^{-1}(m+1){n\choose m+1}p^s \pmod{p^{s+1}} {equation*} where $p$ is any prime, $n$, $m$, $s$ and $r$ are nonnegative integers such that $n\ge m$, $s\ge 1$, $1\le r\le p^s-1$ and $r$ is not divisible by $p$. We derive a proof by induction using a multiple application of Lucas' theorem and two basic binomial coefficient identities. As an application, we prove that a similar congruence for a prime $p\ge 5$ established in 1992 by D. F. Bailey holds for each prime $p$.
In this paper, we study the combinatorial sum $$\sum_{k\equiv r(\mbox{mod }m)}{n\choose k}a^k.$$ By studying this sum, we obtain new congruences for Lucas quotients of two infinite families of Lucas sequences. Only for three Lucas sequences, there are such known results.
Congruences are found modulo powers of 5, 7 and 13 for Andrews' smallest parts partition function spt(n). These congruences are reminiscent of Ramanujan's partition congruences modulo powers of 5, 7 and 11. Recently, Ono proved explicit Ramanujan-type congruences for spt(n) modulo p for all primes p>3 which were conjectured earlier by the author. We extend Ono's method to handle the powers of 5, 7 and 13 congruences. We need the theory of weak Maass forms as well as certain classical modular equations for the Dedekind eta-function.
Recently, Lin introduced two new partition functions PD$_t(n)$ and PDO$_t(n)$, which count the total number of tagged parts over all partitions of $n$ with designated summands and the total number of tagged parts over all partitions of $n$ with designated summands in which all parts are odd. Lin also proved some congruences modulo 3 and 9 for PD$_t(n)$ and PDO$_t(n)$, and conjectured some congruences modulo 8. Very recently, Adansie, Chern, and Xia found two new infinite families of congruences modulo 9 for PD$_t(n)$. In this paper, we prove the congruences modulo 8 conjectured by Lin and also…
In this work, we study the function $B_{s,t}(n)$, which counts the number of $(s,t)$-regular bipartitions of $n$. Recently, many authors proved infinite families of congruences modulo $11$ for $B_{3,11}(n)$, modulo $3$ for $B_{3,s}(n)$ and modulo $5$ for $B_{5,s}(n)$. Very recently, Kathiravan proved several infinite families of congruences modulo $11$, $13$ and $17$ for $B_{5,11}(n)$, $B_{5,13}(n)$ and $B_{81,17}(n)$. In this paper, we will prove infinite families of congruences modulo $5$ for $B_{2,15}(n)$, modulo $11$ for $B_{7,11}(n)$, modulo $11$ for $B_{27,11}(n)$ and modulo $17$ for $B_…
Let $B_{l,m}(n)$ denote the number of $(l,m)$-regular bipartitions of $n$. Recently, many authors proved several infinite families of congruences modulo $3$, $5$ and $11$ for $B_{l,m}(n)$. In this paper, using theta function identities to prove infinite families of congruences modulo $m$ for $(l,m)$-regular bipartitions, where $m\in\{7,3,11,13,17\}$.
We find and prove a class of congruences modulo 4 for Andrews' partition with certain ternary quadratic form. We also discuss distribution of $\overline{\mathcal{EO}}(n)$ and further prove that $\overline{\mathcal{EO}}(n)\equiv0\pmod4$ for almost all $n$. This study was inspired by similar congruences modulo 4 in the work by the second author and Garvan.
This article starts a computational study of congruences of modular forms and modular Galois representations modulo prime powers. Algorithms are described that compute the maximum integer modulo which two monic coprime integral polynomials have a root in common in a sense that is defined. These techniques are applied to the study of congruences of modular forms and modular Galois representations modulo prime powers. Finally, some computational results with implications on the (non-)liftability of modular forms modulo prime powers and possible generalisations of level raising are presented.
Recently, Nayaka and Naika (2022) proved several congruences modulo $16$ and $32$ for $t$-colored overpartitions with $t=5,7,11$ and $13$. We extend their list using an algorithmic technique.
We introduce two new integer partition functions, both of which are the number of partition quadruples of $n$ with certain size restrictions. We prove both functions satisfy Ramanujan-type congruences modulo $3$, $5$, $7$, and $13$ by use of generalized Lambert series identities and $q$-series techniques.
In this paper we investigate congruence relationships of particular finite generalized harmonic numbers sums. We suggest more transparent and simpler method to analyse these sums and present several additional results for certain special cases.
Inspired by recent congruences by Andersen with varying powers of 2 in the modulus for partition related functions, we extend the modulo 32760 congruences of the first author for the function spt(n). We show that a normalized form of the generating function of spt(n) is an eigenform modulo 32 for the Hecke operators T(l^2) for primes l >= 5 with l congruent to 1, 11, 17, 19 (mod 24), and an eigenform modulo 16 for l congruent to? 13, 23 (mod 24).
We establish the existence of congruences between a fixed endoscopic cuspidal automorphic representation $Π$ of $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$ of square-free conductor and stable cuspidal automorphic representations of the same level and weight modulo certain prime factors of the value at $1$ of the adjoint $L$-function of $Π$ normalized by a suitable period.
We determine the ring structure of Siegel modular forms of degree g modulo a prime p, extending Nagaoka's result in the case of degree g=2. We characterize U(p) congruences of Jacobi forms and Siegel modular forms, and surprisingly find different behaviors of Siegel modular forms of even and odd degrees.
In 2009, Corteel, Savelief and Vuletić generalized the concept of overpartitions to a new object called plane overpartitions. In recent work, the author considered a restricted form of plane overpartitions called $k$-rowed plane overpartions and proved a method to obtain congruences for these and other types of combinatorial generating functions. In this paper, we prove several restricted and unrestricted plane overpartition congruences modulo $4$ and $8$ using other techniques.
For any non-negative integer $n$ and non-zero integer $r$, let $p_r(n)$ denote Ramanujan's general partition function. By employing $q$-identities, we prove some new Ramanujan-type congruences modulo 5 for $p_r(n)$ for $r=-(5λ+1), -(5λ+3), -(5λ+4), -(25λ+1)$, $-(25λ+2)$, and any integer $λ$.
We extend to Segal-Piatetski-Shapiro sequences previous results on the Luca-Schinzel question over integral valued polynomial sequences. Namely, we prove that for any real $c$ larger than $1$ the sequence $(\sum_{m\le n} φ(\lfloor m^c \rfloor) /\lfloor m^c \rfloor)_n$ is dense modulo $1$, where $φ$ denotes Euler's totient function. The main part of the proof consists in showing that when $R$ is a large integer, the sequence of the residues of $\lfloor m^c \rfloor$ modulo $R$ contains blocks of consecutive values which are in an arithmetic progression.
A partition of $n$ is $l$-regular if none of its parts is divisible by $l$. Let $b_l(n)$ denote the number of $l$-regular partitions of $n$. In this paper, using theta function identities due to Ramanujan, we establish some new infinite families of congruences for $b_l(n)$ modulo $l$, where $l=13,17,23$.
We prove a two-parameter family of $q$-hypergeometric congruences modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial. Crucial ingredients in our proof are George Andrews' multiseries extension of the Watson transformation, and a Karlsson--Minton type summation for very-well-poised basic hypergeometric series due to George Gasper. The new family of $q$-congruences is then used to prove two conjectures posed earlier by the authors.
We give bounds on the number of solutions to the Diophantine equation (X+1/x)(Y+1/y) = n as n tends to infinity. These bounds are related to the number of solutions to congruences of the form ax+by = 1 modulo xy.
For any positive integers $n$ and $r$, let $p_r(n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ where each part has $r$ distinct colours. Many authors studied the partition function $p_r(n)$ for particular values of $r$. In this paper, we prove some general congruences modulo $5$ and $7$ for the colour partition function $p_r(n)$ by considering some general values of $r$. To prove the congruences we employ some $q$-series identities which is also in the spirit of Ramanujan.
Recently, Chan and Wang (Fractional powers of the generating function for the partition function. Acta Arith. 187(1), 59--80 (2019)) studied the fractional powers of the generating function for the partition function and found several congruences satisfied by the corresponding coefficients. In this paper, we find some new families of congruences modulo powers of primes. We also find analogous results for the coefficients of the fractional powers of the generating function for the 2-color partition function.
In this note we shall improve some congruences of D.F. Bailey [Two p^3 variations of Lucas' Theorem, JNT 35(1990), pp. 208-215] to higher prime power moduli, by studying the relation between irregular pairs of the form (p,p-3) and refined version of Wolstenholme's theorem.
Let $NT(m, k, n)$ denote the total number of parts in the partitions of n with rank congruent to m modulo k. Andrews proved Beck's conjecture on congruences for $NT(m, k, n)$ modulo 5 and 7. Generalizing Andrews'results, Chern obtain congruences for $NT(m, k, n)$ modulo 11 and 13. More recently, the second author use the theory of Hecke operators to establish congruences for such partition statistics modulo powers of primes $\ell \ge 7$. In this paper, we obtain Andrews-Beck type congruences modulo powers of 5.
The partition function $ p_{[1^c11^d]}(n)$ can be defined using the generating function, \[\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}p_{[1^c{11}^d]}(n)q^n=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\dfrac{1}{(1-q^n)^c(1-q^{11 n})^d}.\] In this paper, we prove infinite families of congruences for the partition function $ p_{[1^c11^d]}(n)$ modulo powers of $11$ for any integers $c$ and $d$, which generalizes Atkin and Gordon's congruences for powers of the partition function. The proofs use an explicit basis for the vector space of modular functions of the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(11)$.
We obtain new results about the representation of almost all residues modulo a prime $p$ by a product of a small integer and also an element of small multiplicative subgroup of $({\mathbb Z}/p{\mathbb Z})^*$. These results are based on some ideas, and their modifications, of a recent work of J. Cilleruelo and M. Z. Garaev (2014),
Let $b_{\ell, k}(n), b_{\ell, k, r}(n)$ count the number of $(\ell, k)$, $(\ell, k, r)$-regular partitions respectively. In this paper we shall derive infinite families of congruences for $b_{\ell, k}(n)$ modulo $2$ when $ (\ell, k) = (3,8), (4, 7)$, for $b_{\ell, k}(n)$ modulo $8$, modulo $9$ and modulo $12$ when $(\ell, k) = (4, 9)$ and $b_{\ell, k, r}(n)$ modulo $2$ when $(\ell, k, r) = (3, 5, 8)$.
Let $\overline{p}_{j,k}(n)$ denotes the number of $(j,k)$-regular overpartitions of a positive integer $n$ such that none of the parts is congruent to $j$ modulo $k$. Naika et. al. (2021) proved infinite families of congruences modulo powers of 2 for $\overline{p}_{3,6}(n)$, $\overline{p}_{5,10}(n)$ and $\overline{p}_{9,18}(n)$. In this paper, we obtain infinite families of congruences modulo power of 2 for $\overline{p}_{4,8}(n)$, $\overline{p}_{6,12}(n)$ and $\overline{p}_{8,16}(n)$. For example, we prove that, for all integers $n\geq 0$ and $α\geq 0$, $$ \overline{p}_{4,8}\left( 5^{2α+1}\le…
By considering the $M_2$-rank of an overpartition as well as a residual crank, we give another combinatorial refinement of the congruences $\overline{\mbox{spt}}_2(3n)\equiv \overline{\mbox{spt}}_2(3n+1)\equiv 0\pmod{3}$. Here $\overline{\mbox{spt}}_2(n)$ is the total number of occurrences of the smallest parts among the overpartitions of $n$ where the smallest part is even and not overlined. Our proof depends on Bailey's Lemma and the rank difference formulas of Lovejoy and Osburn for the $M_2$-rank of an overpartition. This congruence, along with a modulo $5$ congruence, has previously been …
New congruences are found for Andrews' smallest parts partition function spt(n). The generating function for spt(n) is related to the holomorphic part alpha(24z) of a certain weak Maass form M(z) of weight 3/2. We show that a normalized form of the generating function for spt(n) is an eigenform modulo 72 for the Hecke operators T(p^2) for primes p > 3, and an eigenform modulo t for t = 5, 7 or 13 provided that (t, 6p) = 1. The result for the modulus 3 was observed earlier by the author and considered by Ono and Folsom. Similar congruences for higher powers of t (namely 5^6, 7^4 and 13^2) occur…
Let $w_n=w_n(P,Q)$ be numerical sequences which satisfy the recursion relation \begin{equation*} w_{n+2}=Pw_{n+1}-Qw_n. \end{equation*} We consider two special cases $(w_0,w_1)=(0,1)$ and $(w_0,w_1)=(2,P)$ and we denote them by $U_n$ and $V_n$ respectively. Vieta-Lucas polynomial $V_n(X,1)$ is the polynomial of degree $n$. We show that the congruence equation $V_n(X,1)\equiv C \mod p$ has a solution if and only if $U_{(p-ε)/d}(C+2,C+2)$ is divisible by $p$, where $ε\in\{\pm 1\}$ depends on $C$ and $p$, and $d=\gcd(n,p-ε)$.
Recently, Romik determined in [9] the Taylor expansion of the Jacobi theta constant θ_3, around the point x = 1. He discovered a new integer sequence, (d(n))_0^\infty=1, 1, -1, 51, 849, -26199, \dots, from which the Taylor coefficients are built, and conjectured that the numbers d(n) satisfy certain congruences modulo various primes. In this paper, we prove some of these conjectures, for example that d(n)\equiv (-1)^{n+1}(mod 5) for all n\geq 1,and that for any prime p\equiv 3 (mod 4), d(n) vanishes modulo p for all large enough n.
For any positive integer $n$ and variables $a$ and $x$ we define the generalized Legendre polynomial $P_n(a,x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\b ak\b{-1-a}k(\frac{1-x}2)^k$. Let $p$ be an odd prime. In the paper we prove many congruences modulo $p^2$ related to $P_{p-1}(a,x)$. For example, we show that $P_{p-1}(a,x)\e (-1)^{<a>_p}P_{p-1}(a,-x)\mod {p^2}$, where $<a>_p$ is the least nonnegative residue of $a$ modulo $p$. We also generalize some congruences of Zhi-Wei Sun, and determine $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{2k}k\binom{3k}k{54^{-k}}$ and $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom ak\binom{b-a}k\mod {p^2}$, where $[x]$ is the great…
Let $ped(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ wherein even parts are distinct (and odd parts are unrestricted). We show infinite families of congruences for $ped(n)$ modulo $8$. We also examine the behavior of $ped_{-2}(n)$ modulo $8$ in detail where $ped_{-2}(n)$ denotes the number of bipartitions of $n$ with even parts distinct. As a result, we find infinite families of congruences for $ped_{2}(n)$ modulo $8$.
For any polynomial $P(x)\in\mathbb{Z}[x],$ we study arithmetic dynamical systems generated by $\displaystyle{F_P(n)=\prod_{k\le n}}P(n)(\text{mod}\ p),$ $n\ge 1.$ We apply this to improve the lower bound on the number of distinct quadratic fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{F_P(n)})$ in short intervals $M\le n\le M+H$ previously due to Cilleruelo, Luca, Quirós and Shparlinski. As a second application, we estimate the average number of missing values of $F_P(n)(\text{mod}\ p)$ for special families of polynomials, generalizing previous work of Banks, Garaev, Luca, Schinzel, Shparlinski and oth…
