Let $Z = (Z_t)_{t \geq 0}$ be the Rosenblatt process with Hurst index $H \in (1/2, 1)$. We prove joint continuity for the local time of $Z$, and establish Hölder conditions for the local time. These results are then used to study the irregularity of the sample paths of $Z$. Based on analogy with similar known results in the case of fractional Brownian motion, we believe our results are sharp. A main ingredient of our proof is a rather delicate spectral analysis of arbitrary linear combinations of integral operators, which arise from the representation of the Rosenblatt process as an element in the second chaos.
The paper concerns the image, level and sojourn time sets associated with sample paths of the Rosenblatt process. We obtain results regarding the Hausdorff (both classical and macroscopic), packing and intermediate dimensions, and the logarithmic and pixel densities. As a preliminary step we also establish the time inversion property of the Rosenblatt process, as well as some technical points regarding the distribution of $Z$.
We analyze {\em the Rosenblatt process} which is a selfsimilar process with stationary increments and which appears as limit in the so-called {\em Non Central Limit Theorem} (Dobrushin and Major (1979), Taqqu (1979)). This process is non-Gaussian and it lives in the second Wiener chaos. We give its representation as a Wiener-Itô multiple integral with respect to the Brownian motion on a finite interval and we develop a stochastic calculus with respect to it by using both pathwise type calculus and Malliavin calculus.
The most known example of a class of non-Gaussian stochastic processes which belongs to the homogenous Wiener chaos of an arbitrary order N > 1 are probably Hermite processes of rank N. They generalize fractional Brownian motion (fBm) and Rosenblatt process in a natural way. They were introduced several decades ago. Yet, in contrast with fBm and many other Gaussian and stable stochastic processes and fields related to it, few results on path behavior of Hermite processes are available in the literature. For instance the natural issue of whether or not their paths are nowhere differentiable fun…
We examine the asymptotic behaviour of the sample autocovariance in a continuous-time moving average model with long-range dependence. We show that it is either asymptotically Rosenblatt distributed or stable distributed. This shows that results by Horváth and Kokoszka for discrete-time moving average processes with long memory also hold for continuous-time moving average processes.
We obtain sharp sufficient conditions for exponentially integrable stochastic processes $X=\{X(t)\!\!: t\in [0,1]\}$, to have sample paths with bounded $Φ$-variation. When $X$ is moreover Gaussian, we also provide a bound of the expectation of the associated $Φ$-variation norm of $X$. For an Hermite process $X$ of order $m\in \N$ and of Hurst index $H\in (1/2,1)$, we show that $X$ is of bounded $Φ$-variation where $Φ(x)=x^{1/H}(\log(\log 1/x))^{-m/(2H)}$, and that this $Φ$ is optimal. This shows that in terms of $Φ$-variation, the Rosenblatt process (corresponding to $m=2$) has more rough samp…
The essential spectral radius of a sub-Markovian process is defined as the infimum of the spectral radiuses of all local perturbations of the process. When the family of rescaled processes satisfies sample path large deviation principle, the spectral radius and the essential spectral radius are expressed in terms of the rate function. The paper is motivated by applications to reflected diffusions and jump Markov processes describing stochastic networks for which the sample path large deviation principle has been established and the rate function has been identified while essential spectral rad…
We study the sample paths properties of Operator scaling Gaussian random fields. Such fields are anisotropic generalizations of anisotropic self-similar random fields as anisotropic Fractional Brownian Motion. Some characteristic properties of the anisotropy are revealed by the regularity of the sample paths. The sharpest way of measuring smoothness is related to these anisotropies and thus to the geometry of these fields.
The signature of Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ over a running time interval $[0,T]$ is the collection of all iterated Stratonovich path integrals along the Brownian motion. We show that, in dimension $d\geq 2$, almost all Brownian motion sample paths (running up to time $T$) are determined by its signature over $[0,T]$
We prove that if $X$ and $Y$ are two Gaussian fields with equivalent spectral densities, they have the same sample paths properties in any separable Banach space continuously embedded in $\mathcal{C}^0(K)$ where $K$ is a compact set of $\mathbb{R}^d$.
By the work of P. Lévy, the sample paths of the Brownian motion are known to satisfy a certain Hölder regularity condition almost surely. This was later improved by Ciesielski, who studied the regularity of these paths in Besov and Besov-Orlicz spaces. We review these results and propose new function spaces of Besov type, strictly smaller than those of Ciesielski and Lévy, where the sample paths of the Brownian motion lie in almost surely. In the same spirit, we review and extend the work of Kamont, who investigated the same question for the multivariate Brownian sheet and function spaces of d…
We study sample path deviations of the Wiener process from three different representations of its bridge: anticipative version, integral representation and space-time transform. Although these representations of the Wiener bridge are equal in law, their sample path behavior is quite different. Our results nicely demonstrate this fact. We calculate and compare the expected absolute, quadratic and conditional quadratic path deviations of the different representations of the Wiener bridge from the original Wiener process. It is further shown that the presented qualitative behavior of sample path …
We study a model of stochastic evolutionary game dynamics in which the probabilities that agents choose suboptimal actions are dependent on payoff consequences. We prove a sample path large deviation principle, characterizing the rate of decay of the probability that the sample path of the evolutionary process lies in a prespecified set as the population size approaches infinity. We use these results to describe excursion rates and stationary distribution asymptotics in settings where the mean dynamic admits a globally attracting state, and we compute these rates explicitly for the case of log…
This paper is devoted to the problem of sample path large deviations for multidimensional queueing models with feedback. We derive a new version of the contraction principle where the continuous map is not well-defined on the whole space: we give conditions under which it allows to identify the rate function. We illustrate our technique by deriving a large deviation principle for a class of networks that contains the classical Jackson networks.
We consider a system of particles experiencing diffusion and mean field interaction, and study its behaviour when the number of particles goes to infinity. We derive non-asymptotic large deviation bounds measuring the concentration of the empirical measure of the paths of the particles around its limit. The method is based on a coupling argument, strong integrability estimates on the paths in Holder norm, and some general concentration result for the empirical measure of identically distributed independent paths.
We describe stochastic calculus in the context of processes that are driven by an adapted point process of locally finite intensity and are differentiable between jumps. This includes Markov chains as well as non-Markov processes. By analogy with Itô processes we define the drift and diffusivity, which we then use to describe a general sample path estimate. We then give several examples, including ODE approximation, processes with linear drift, first passage times, and an application to the stochastic logistic model.
Let u = {u(t, x), t $\in$ [0, T ], x $\in$ R d } be the solution to the linear stochastic heat equation driven by a fractional noise in time with correlated spatial structure. We study various path properties of the process u with respect to the time and space variable, respectively. In particular, we derive their exact uniform and local moduli of continuity and Chung-type laws of the iterated logarithm.
Any exchangeable Markov processes on $[k]^{\mathbb{N}}$ with cadlag sample paths projects to a Markov process on the simplex whose sample paths are cadlag and of locally bounded variation. Furthermore, any such process has a de Finetti-type description as a mixture of i.i.d. copies of time-inhomogeneous Markov processes on $[k]$. In the Feller case, these time-inhomogeneous Markov processes have a relatively simple structure; however, in the non-Feller case a greater variety of behaviors is possible since the transition law of the underlying Markov process on $[k]^{\zz{N}}$ can depend in a non…
We prove the existence and pathwise uniqueness of the solution to a stochastic integral equation driven by Poisson random measures based on Kuznetsov measures for a continuous-state branching process. That gives a direct construction of the sample path of a continuous-state branching process with dependent immigration. The immigration rates depend on the population size via some functions satisfying a Yamada--Watanabe type condition. We only assume the existence of the first moment of the process. The existence of excursion law for the continuous-state branching process is not required. By spe…
Consider a queueing system fed by traffic from $N$ independent and identically distributed marked point processes. We establish several novel sample path large deviations results in the scaled uniform topology for such a system with a small buffer. This includes both the heavily loaded case (the load grows as $N\rightarrow\infty$) and the previously unexplored lightly loaded case (the load vanishes as $N\rightarrow\infty$); this latter case requires the introduction of novel speed scalings for such queueing systems. Alongside these sample path large deviations results, we introduce a new frame…
In this paper, we shall study the basic absolute properties of $G$-Brownian motion, i.e., those properties which hold for q.s. $ω$. These include the characterization of the zero set and the local maxima of the $G$-Brownian motion paths. We also show that the indicator function of $G$-Brownian motion is in $\mathbb{L}_G^1(Ω)$, which is an useful tool for the study of $G$-expectation theory.
The geometry of the multifractional Brownian motion (mBm) is known to present a complex and surprising form when the Hurst function is greatly irregular. Nevertheless, most of the literature devoted to the subject considers sufficiently smooth cases which lead to sample paths locally similar to a fractional Brownian motion (fBm). The main goal of this paper is therefore to extend these results to a more general frame and consider any type of continuous Hurst function. More specifically, we mainly focus on obtaining a complete characterization of the pointwise Hölder regularity of the sample pa…
The sample paths of white noise are proved to be elements of certain Besov spaces with dominating mixed smoothness. Unlike in isotropic spaces, here the regularity does not get worse with increasing space dimension. Consequently, white noise is actually much smoother than the known sharp regularity results in isotropic spaces suggest. An application of our techniques yields new results for the regularity of solutions of Poisson and heat equation on the half space with boundary noise. The main novelty is the flexible treatment of the interplay between the singularity at the boundary and the smo…
We present a satisfactory definition of the important class of Lévy processes indexed by a general collection of sets. We use a new definition for increment stationarity of set-indexed processes to obtain different characterizations of this class. As an example, the set-indexed compound Poisson process is introduced. The set-indexed Lévy process is characterized by infinitely divisible laws and a Lévy-Khintchine representation. Moreover, the following concepts are discussed: projections on flows, Markov properties, and pointwise continuity. Finally the study of sample paths leads to a Lévy-Itô…
We consider the regularity of sample paths of Volterra processes. These processes are defined as stochastic integrals $$ M(t)=\int_{0}^{t}F(t,r)dX(r), \ \ t \in \mathds{R}_{+}, $$ where $X$ is a semimartingale and $F$ is a deterministic real-valued function. We derive the information on the modulus of continuity for these processes under regularity assumptions on the function $F$ and show that $M(t)$ has "worst" regularity properties at times of jumps of $X(t)$. We apply our results to obtain the optimal Hölder exponent for fractional Lévy processes.
We study sample-path large deviations for Lévy processes and random walks with heavy-tailed jump-size distributions that are of Weibull type. Our main results include an extended form of an LDP (large deviations principle) in the $J_1$ topology, and a full LDP in the $M_1'$ topology. The rate function can be represented as the solution to a quasi-variational problem. The sharpness and applicability of these results are illustrated by a counterexample proving the nonexistence of a full LDP in the $J_1$ topology, and by an application to a first passage problem.
We study the small-time asymptotics of sample paths of Lévy processes and Lévy-type processes. Namely, we investigate under which conditions the limit $$\limsup_{t \to 0} \frac{1}{f(t)} |X_t-X_0|$$ is finite resp.\ infinite with probability $1$. We establish integral criteria in terms of the infinitesimal characteristics and the symbol of the process. Our results apply to a wide class of processes, including solutions to Lévy-driven SDEs and stable-like processes. For the particular case of Lévy processes, we recover and extend earlier results from the literature. Moreover, we present a new ma…
The event of large losses plays an important role in credit risk. As these large losses are typically rare, and portfolios usually consist of a large number of positions, large deviation theory is the natural tool to analyze the tail asymptotics of the probabilities involved. We first derive a sample-path large deviation principle (LDP) for the portfolio's loss process, which enables the computation of the logarithmic decay rate of the probabilities of interest. In addition, we derive exact asymptotic results for a number of specific rare-event probabilities, such as the probability of the los…
Let $X$ be a Lévy process with regularly varying Lévy measure $ν$. We obtain sample-path large deviations for scaled processes $\bar X_n(t) \triangleq X(nt)/n$ and obtain a similar result for random walks. Our results yield detailed asymptotic estimates in scenarios where multiple big jumps in the increment are required to make a rare event happen; we illustrate this through detailed conditional limit theorems. In addition, we investigate connections with the classical large deviations framework. In that setting, we show that a weak large deviation principle (with logarithmic speed) holds, but…
The Daniell-Kolmogorov Extension Theorem is a fundamental result in the theory of stochastic processes, as it allows one to construct a stochastic process with prescribed finite-dimensional distributions. However, it is well-known that the domain of the constructed probability measure - the product sigma-algebra in the set of all paths - is not sufficiently rich. This problem is usually dealt with through a modification of the stochastic process, essentially changing the sample paths so that they become càdlàg. Assuming a countable state space, we provide an alternative version of the Daniell-…
Continuous time Feynman-Kac measures on path spaces are central in applied probability, partial differential equation theory, as well as in quantum physics. This article presents a new duality formula between normalized Feynman-Kac distribution and their mean field particle interpretations. Among others, this formula allows us to design a reversible particle Gibbs-Glauber sampler for continuous time Feynman-Kac integration on path spaces. This result extends the particle Gibbs samplers introduced by Andrieu-Doucet-Holenstein [2] in the context of discrete generation models to continuous time F…
We consider a dynamic Erdős-Rényi random graph (ERRG) on $n$ vertices in which each edge switches on at rate $λ$ and switches off at rate $μ$, independently of other edges. The focus is on the analysis of the evolution of the associated empirical graphon in the limit as $n\to\infty$. Our main result is a large deviation principle (LDP) for the sample path of the empirical graphon observed until a fixed time horizon. The rate is $\binom{n}{2}$, the rate function is a specific action integral on the space of graphon trajectories. We apply the LDP to identify (i) the most likely path that startin…
We consider a stochastic interacting vortex system of $N$ particles, approximating the vorticity formulation of 2-D Navier-Stokes equation on torus. The singular interaction kernel is given by the Biot-Savart law. We only require the initial state to have finite energy, and obtain a sample-path large deviation principle for the empirical measure when the number of vortices goes to infinity. The rate function is characterized by an explicit formula supporting on sample paths with finite energy and finite integral of $L^2$ norms over time. The proof utilizes a symmetrization technique for the re…
We prove a Chung-type law of the iterated logarithm for a multiparameter extension of the fractional Brownian motion which is not increment stationary. This multiparameter fractional Brownian motion behaves very differently at the origin and away from the axes, which also appears in the Hausdorff dimension of its range and in the measure of its pointwise Hölder exponents. A functional version of this Chung-type law is also provided.
We present some new results on sample path optimality for the ergodic control problem of a class of non-degenerate diffusions controlled through the drift. The hypothesis most often used in the literature to ensure the existence of an a.s. sample path optimal stationary Markov control requires finite second moments of the first hitting times $τ$ of bounded domains over all admissible controls. We show that this can be considerably weakened: ${\mathrm E}[τ^2]$ may be replaced with ${\mathrm E}[τ\ln^+(τ)]$, thus reducing the required rate of convergence of averages from polynomial to logarithmic…
We consider a stochastic flow driven by a finite dimensional Brownian motion. We show that almost every realization of such a flow exhibits strong statistical properties such as the exponential convergence of an initial measure to the equilibrium state and the central limit theorem. The proof uses new estimates of the mixing rates of the multipoint motion.
Recent studies have demonstrated an interesting connection between the asymptotic behavior at ruin of a Lévy insurance risk process under the Cramér-Lundberg and convolution equivalent conditions. For example, the limiting distributions of the overshoot and the undershoot are strikingly similar in these two settings. This is somewhat surprising since the global sample path behavior of the process under these two conditions is quite different. Using tools from excursion theory and fluctuation theory, we provide a means of transferring results from one setting to the other which, among other thi…
We study the sample path regularity of the solutions of a class of spde's which are second order in time and that includes the stochastic wave equation. Non-integer powers of the spatial Laplacian are allowed. The driving noise is white in time and spatially homogeneous. Continuing with the work initiated in Dalang and Mueller (2003), we prove that the solutions belong to a fractional $L^2$-Sobolev space. We also prove Hölder continuity in time and therefore, we obtain joint Hölder continuity in the time and space variables. Our conclusions rely on a precise analysis of the properties of the s…
We define two new classes of stochastic processes, called tempered fractional Lévy process of the first and second kinds (TFLP and TFLP $I\!I$, respectively). TFLP and TFLP $I\!I$ make up very broad finite-variance, generally non-Gaussian families of transient anomalous diffusion models that are constructed by exponentially tempering the power law kernel in the moving average representation of a fractional Lévy process. Accordingly, the increment processes of TFLP and TFLP $I\!I$ display semi-long range dependence. We establish the sample path properties of TFLP and TFLP $I\!I$. We further use…
