The most known example of a class of non-Gaussian stochastic processes which belongs to the homogenous Wiener chaos of an arbitrary order N > 1 are probably Hermite processes of rank N. They generalize fractional Brownian motion (fBm) and Rosenblatt process in a natural way. They were introduced several decades ago. Yet, in contrast with fBm and many other Gaussian and stable stochastic processes and fields related to it, few results on path behavior of Hermite processes are available in the literature. For instance the natural issue of whether or not their paths are nowhere differentiable functions has not yet been solved even in the most simple case of the Rosenblatt process. The goal of our article is to derive a quasi-optimal lower bound of the asymptotic behavior of local oscillations of paths of Hermite processes of any rank N, which, among other things, shows that these paths are nowhere differentiable functions.
We define multifractional Hermite processes which generalize and extend both multifractional Brownian motion and Hermite processes. It is done by substituting the Hurst parameter in the definition of Hermite processes as a multiple Wiener-Itô integral by a Hurst function. Then, we study the pointwise regularity of these processes, their local asymptotic self-similarity and some fractal dimensions of their graph. Our results show that the fundamental properties of multifractional Hermite processes are, as desired, governed by the Hurst function. Complements are given in the second order Wiener …
Hermite processes are self--similar processes with stationary increments which appear as limits of normalized sums of random variables with long range dependence. The Hermite process of order $1$ is fractional Brownian motion and the Hermite process of order $2$ is the Rosenblatt process. We consider here the sum of two Hermite processes of order $q\geq 1$ and $q+1$ and of different Hurst parameters. We then study its quadratic variations at different scales. This is akin to a wavelet decomposition. We study both the cases where the Hermite processes are dependent and where they are independen…
We provide a particle picture representation for the non-symmetric Rosenblatt process and for Hermite processes of any order, extending the result of Bojdecki, Gorostiza and Talarczyk in~\cite{FILT}. We show that these processes can be obtained as limits in the sense of finite-dimensional distributions of certain functionals of a system of particles evolving according to symmetric stable Lévy motions. In the case of $k$-Hermite processes the corresponding functional involves $k$-intersection local time of symmetric stable Lévy processes
The paper investigates properties of generalized Hermite-type processes that arise in non-central limit theorems for integral functionals of long-range dependent random fields. The case of increasing multidimensional domain asymptotics is studied. Three approaches to investigate properties of these processes are discussed. Contrary to the classical one-dimensional case, it is shown that for any choice of a multidimensional observation window the generalized Hermite-type process has non-stationary increments.
We aim to generalize the homogenisation theorem in \cite{Gehringer-Li-tagged} for a passive tracer interacting with a fractional Gaußian noise to also cover fractional non-Gaußian noises. To do so we analyse limit theorems for normalized functionals of Hermite-Volterra processes, extending the result in \cite{Diu-Tran} to power series with fast decaying coefficients. We obtain either convergence to a Wiener process, in the short-range dependent case, or to a Hermite process, in the long-range dependent case. Furthermore, we prove convergence in the multivariate case with both, short and long-r…
This paper investigates the mean square error optimal estimation of scale invariant Wigner spectrum for the class of Gaussian locally self-similar processes, by the multitaper method. In this method, the spectrum is estimated as a weighted sum of scale invariant windowed spectrograms. Moreover, it is shown that the optimal multitapers are approximated by the quasi Lamperti transformation of Hermite functions, which is computationally more efficient. Finally, the performance and accuracy of the estimation is studied via simulation.
This thesis consists of two parts. Part I is an introduction to Hermite processes, Hermite random fields, Fisher information and to the papers constituting the thesis. More precisely, in Section 1 we introduce Hermite processes in a nutshell, as well as some of its basic properties. It is the necessary background for the articles [a] and [c]. In Section 2 we consider briefly the multiparameter Hermite random fields and we study some less elementary facts which are used in the article [b]. In section 3, we recall some terminology about Fisher information related to the article [d]. Finally, our…
Consider a moving average process $X$ of the form $X(t)=\int_{-\infty}^t x(t-u)dZ_u$, $t\geq 0$, where $Z$ is a (non Gaussian) Hermite process of order $q\geq 2$ and $x:\mathbb{R}_+\to\mathbb{R}$ is sufficiently integrable. This paper investigates the fluctuations, as $T\to\infty$, of integral functionals of the form $t\mapsto \int_0^{Tt }P(X(s))ds$, in the case where $P$ is any given polynomial function. It extends a study initiated in Tran (2018), where only the quadratic case $P(x)=x^2$ and the convergence in the sense of finite-dimensional distributions were considered.
Wavelet-type random series representations of the well-known Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM) and many other related stochastic processes and fields have started to be introduced since more than two decades. Such representations provide natural frameworks for approximating almost surely and uniformly rough sample paths at different scales and for study of various aspects of their complex erratic behavior. Hermite process of an arbitrary integer order $d$, which extends FBM, is a paradigmatic example of a stochastic process belonging to the $d$th Wiener chaos. It was introduced very long time a…
In the present paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the auto-covariance function for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) processes driven by Gaussian noises with stationary and non-stationary increments and for Hermite OU processes. Our results are generalizations of the corresponding results of Cheridito et al. \cite{CKM} and Kaarakka and Salminen \cite{KS}.
In this work, we introduce matrix-valued diffusion processes which describe the non-equilibrium situation of the matrix models for the beta-Hermite and the beta-Laguerre ensembles. We also study the corresponding spectral measure process and empirical/singular value process with regard to their limit laws.
Hermite processes are a class of self-similar processes with stationary increments. They often arise in limit theorems under long-range dependence. We derive new representations of Hermite processes with multiple Wiener-Itô integrals, whose integrands involve the local time of intersecting stationary stable regenerative sets. The proof relies on an approximation of regenerative sets and local times based on a scheme of random interval covering.
We introduce a broad class of self-similar processes $\{Z(t),t\ge 0\}$ called generalized Hermite process. They have stationary increments, are defined on a Wiener chaos with Hurst index $H\in (1/2,1)$, and include Hermite processes as a special case. They are defined through a homogeneous kernel $g$, called "generalized Hermite kernel", which replaces the product of power functions in the definition of Hermite processes. The generalized Hermite kernels $g$ can also be used to generate long-range dependent stationary sequences forming a discrete chaos process $\{X(n)\}$. In addition, we consid…
We study persistence probabilities of Hermite processes. As a tool, we derive a general decorrelation inequality for the Rosenblatt process, which is reminiscent of Slepian's lemma for Gaussian processes or the FKG inequality and which may be of independent interest. This allows to compute the persistence exponent for the Rosenblatt process. For general Hermite processes, we derive upper and lower bounds for the persistence probabilites with the conjectured persistence exponent, but with non-matching boundaries.
Let $(Z_t^{(q, H)})_{t \geq 0}$ denote a Hermite process of order $q \geq 1$ and self-similarity parameter $H \in (\frac{1}{2}, 1)$. Consider the Hermite-driven moving average process $$X_t^{(q, H)} = \int_0^t x(t-u) dZ^{(q, H)}(u), \qquad t \geq 0.$$ In the special case of $x(u) = e^{-θu}, θ> 0$, $X$ is the non-stationary Hermite Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process of order $q$. Under suitable integrability conditions on the kernel $x$, we prove that as $T \to \infty$, the normalized quadratic functional $$G_T^{(q, H)}(t)=\frac{1}{T^{2H_0 - 1}}\int_0^{Tt}\Big(\big(X_s^{(q, H)}\big)^2 - E\Big[\big(X_s^…

Determinantal points processes are a promising but relatively under-developed tool in machine learning and statistical modelling, being the canonical statistical example of distributions with repulsion. While their mathematical formulation is elegant and appealing, their practical use, such as simply sampling from them, is far from straightforward.Recent work has shown how a particular type of determinantal point process defined on the compact multidimensional space $[-1, 1]^d$ can be practically sampled and further shown how such samples can be used to improve Monte Carlo integration. This wor…
We study the limit law of a vector made up of normalized sums of functions of long-range dependent stationary Gaussian series. Depending on the memory parameter of the Gaussian series and on the Hermite ranks of the functions, the resulting limit law may be (a) a multivariate Gaussian process involving dependent Brownian motion marginals, or (b) a multivariate process involving dependent Hermite processes as marginals, or (c) a combination. We treat cases (a), (b) in general and case (c) when the Hermite components involve ranks 1 and 2. We include a conjecture about case (c) when the Hermite …
Let $Z$ denote a Hermite process of order $q \geq 1$ and self-similarity parameter $H \in (\frac{1}{2}, 1)$. This process is $H$-self-similar, has stationary increments and exhibits long-range dependence. When $q=1$, it corresponds to the fractional Brownian motion, whereas it is not Gaussian as soon as $q\geq 2$. In this paper, we deal with a Vasicek-type model driven by $Z$, of the form $dX_t = a(b - X_t)dt +dZ_t$. Here, $a > 0$ and $b \in \mathbb{R}$ are considered as unknown drift parameters. We provide estimators for $a$ and $b$ based on continuous-time observations. For all possible valu…
We consider the class of all the Hermite processes $(Z_{t}^{(q,H)})_{t\in \lbrack 0,1]}$ of order $q\in \mathbf{N}^{\ast}$ and with Hurst parameter $% H\in (\frac{1}{2},1)$. The process $Z^{(q,H)}$ is $H$-selfsimilar, it has stationary increments and it exhibits long-range dependence identical to that of fractional Brownian motion (fBm). For $q=1$, $Z^{(1,H)}$ is fBm, which is Gaussian; for $q=2$, $Z^{(2,H)}$ is the Rosenblatt process, which lives in the second Wiener chaos; for any $q>2$, $Z^{(q,H)}$ is a process in the $q$th Wiener chaos. We study the variations of $Z^{(q,H)}$ for any $q$, b…
In this paper, we discuss the convergence rate of empirical processes of Gaussian processes for a large class of function families. Our main goal is to show that the tail of the uniform norm of the empirical processes can be dominated by polynomials. We put forward the properties of Hermite polynomials which play a crucial role in the proof of main theorems. At the end of the paper, we show the expectation of the random quantity converging to zero at a more rapid rate n^{-1/2+ε} than ever shown rate n^{-1/3}.
Stroock and Varadhan in 1997 and Geiss in 2005 independently introduced stochastic processes with bounded mean oscillation (BMO) and established their exponential integrability with some unspecified exponential constant. This result is an analogue of the John--Nirenberg inequality for functions of bounded mean oscillation. In this work, we quantify the size of the exponential constant by the modulus of mean oscillation. Some new applications of BMO processes in rough stochastic differential equations, numerical approximations and regularization by noise are discussed.
We introduce a new class of self-similar Gaussian stochastic processes, where the covariance is defined in terms of a fractional Brownian motion and another Gaussian process. A special case is the solution in time to the fractional-colored stochastic heat equation described in Tudor (2013). We prove that the process can be decomposed into a fractional Brownian motion (with a different parameter than the one that defines the covariance), and a Gaussian process first described in Lei and Nualart (2008). The component processes can be expressed as stochastic integrals with respect to the Brownian…
In the article, Besov-Orlicz regularity of sample paths of stochastic processes that are represented by multiple integrals of order $n\in\mathbb{N}$ is treated. We give sufficient conditions for the considered processes to have paths in the exponential Besov-Orlicz space $$B_{\varPhi_{2/n},\infty}^α(0,T)\qquad \mbox{with}\qquad \varPhi_{2/n}(x)=\mathrm{e}^{x^{2/n}}-1.$$ These results provide an extension of what is known for scalar Gaussian stochastic processes to stochastic processes in an arbitrary finite Wiener chaos. As an application, the Besov-Orlicz path regularity of fractionally filte…
Bessel processes associated with the root systems $A_{N-1}$ and $B_N$ describe interacting particle systems with $N$ particles on $\mathbb R$; they form dynamic versions of the classical $β$-Hermite and Laguerre ensembles. In this paper we study corresponding Cauchy processes constructed via some subordination. This leads to $β$-Cauchy ensembles in both cases with explicit distributions. For these distributions we derive central limit theorems for fixed $N$ in the freezing regime, i.e., when the parameters tend to infinity. The results are closely related to corresponding known freezing result…
We call "Dyson process" any process on ensembles of matrices in which the entries undergo diffusion. We are interested in the distribution of the eigenvalues (or singular values) of such matrices. In the original Dyson process it was the ensemble of n by n Hermitian matrices, and the eigenvalues describe n curves. Given sets X_1,...,X_m the probability that for each k no curve passes through X_k at time τ_k is given by the Fredholm determinant of a certain matrix kernel, the extended Hermite kernel. For this reason we call this Dyson process the Hermite process. Similarly, when the entries of …
Multivariate Bessel processes describe the stochastic dynamics of interacting particle systems of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland type and are related with $β$-Hermite and Laguerre ensembles. It was shown by Andraus, Katori, and Miyashita that for fixed starting points, these processes admit interesting limit laws when the multiplicities $k$ tend to $\infty$, where in some cases the limits are described by the zeros of classical Hermite and Laguerre polynomials. In this paper we use SDEs to derive corresponding limit laws for starting points of the form $\sqrt k\cdot x$ for $k\to\infty$ with $x$ in …
We obtain sharp sufficient conditions for exponentially integrable stochastic processes $X=\{X(t)\!\!: t\in [0,1]\}$, to have sample paths with bounded $Φ$-variation. When $X$ is moreover Gaussian, we also provide a bound of the expectation of the associated $Φ$-variation norm of $X$. For an Hermite process $X$ of order $m\in \N$ and of Hurst index $H\in (1/2,1)$, we show that $X$ is of bounded $Φ$-variation where $Φ(x)=x^{1/H}(\log(\log 1/x))^{-m/(2H)}$, and that this $Φ$ is optimal. This shows that in terms of $Φ$-variation, the Rosenblatt process (corresponding to $m=2$) has more rough samp…
Let $(G(X_j))_{j\geq1}$ be a multivariate subordinated Gaussian process, which exhibits long-range dependence. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding sequential empirical process under two different types of subordination. The limiting process is either a product of a deterministic function and a Hermite process as in the one-dimensional case or a sum of various processes of this kind.
We obtain an almost sure bound for oscillation rates of empirical distribution functions for stationary causal processes. For short-range dependent processes, the oscillation rate is shown to be optimal in the sense that it is as sharp as the one obtained under independence. The dependence conditions are expressed in terms of physical dependence measures which are directly related to the data-generating mechanism of the underlying processes and thus are easy to work with.
The bead process introduced by Boutillier is a countable interlacing of the determinantal sine-kernel point processes. We construct the bead process for general sine beta processes as an infinite dimensional Markov chain whose transition mechanism is explicitly described. We show that this process is the microscopic scaling limit in the bulk of the Hermite beta corner process introduced by Gorin and Shkolnikov, generalizing the process of the minors of the Gaussian unitary and orthogonal ensembles. In order to prove our results, we use bounds on the variance of the point counting of the circul…
We consider a system of differential equations in a fast long range dependent random environment and prove a homogenization theorem involving multiple scaling constants. The effective dynamics solves a rough differential equation, which is `equivalent' to a stochastic equation driven by mixed Itô integrals and Young integrals with respect to Wiener processes and Hermite processes. Lacking other tools we use the rough path theory for proving the convergence, our main technical endeavour is on obtaining an enhanced scaling limit theorem for path integrals (Functional CLT and non-CLT's) in a stro…
Let G=\{G(x),x\in R^1\} be a mean zero Gaussian processes with stationary increments and set \si ^2(|x-y|)= E(G(x)-G(y))^2. Let f be a symmetric function with Ef(η)<\ff, where η=N(0,1). When \si^2(s) is concave or when \si^2(s)=s^r$, $1<r\leq 3/2 we have \lim_{h\downarrow 0}{\int_a^b f(\frac{G(x+h)-G(x)}{\si (h)}) dx - (b-a)Ef(η)\over \sqrt{Φ(h,\si(h),f,a,b)}}= N(0,1) in law where Φ(h,\si(h),f,a,b) is the variance of the numerator. This result continues to hold when \si^2(s)=s^r, 3/2<r<2, for certain functions f, depending on the nature of the coefficients in their Hermite polynomial expansion…
Suppose $k$ balls are dropped into $n$ boxes independently with uniform probability, where $n, k$ are large with ratio approximately equal to some positive real $λ$. The maximum box count has a counterintuitive behavior: first of all, with high probability it takes at most two values $m_n$ or $m_n+1$, where $m_n$ is roughly $\frac{\ln n}{\ln \ln n}$. Moreover, it oscillates between these two values with an unusual periodicity. In order to prove this statement and various generalizations, it is first shown that for $X_1,...,X_n$ independent and identically distributed discrete random variables …
Quantitative limit theorems for non-linear functionals on the Wiener space are considered. Given the possibly infinite sequence of kernels of the chaos decomposition of such a functional, an estimate for different probability distances between the functional and a Gaussian random variable in terms of contraction norms of these kernels is derived. The applicability of this result is demonstrated by means of the Breuer-Major theorem, unfolding thereby a new connection between the Hermite rank of the considered function and a chaotic gap. Especially, power variations of the fractional Brownian mo…
Multivariate Bessel processes $(X_{t,k})_{t\ge0}$ describe interacting particle systems of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland type and are related with $β$-Hermite and $β$-Laguerre ensembles. They depend on a root system and a multiplicity $k$ which corresponds to the parameter $β$ in random matrix theory. In the recent years, several limit theorems were derived for $k\to\infty$ with fixed $t>0$ and fixed starting point. Only recently, Andraus and Voit used the stochastic differential equations of $(X_{t,k})_{t\ge0}$ to derive limit theorems for $k\to\infty$ with starting points of the form $\sqrt k\cd…
