We study the sample path regularity of the solutions of a class of spde's which are second order in time and that includes the stochastic wave equation. Non-integer powers of the spatial Laplacian are allowed. The driving noise is white in time and spatially homogeneous. Continuing with the work initiated in Dalang and Mueller (2003), we prove that the solutions belong to a fractional $L^2$-Sobolev space. We also prove Hölder continuity in time and therefore, we obtain joint Hölder continuity in the time and space variables. Our conclusions rely on a precise analysis of the properties of the stochastic integral used in the rigourous formulation of the spde, as introduced by Dalang and Mueller. For spatial covariances given by Riesz kernels, we show that our results are optimal.
We investigate the weak order of convergence for space-time discrete approximations of semilinear parabolic stochastic evolution equations driven by additive square-integrable Lévy noise. To this end, the Malliavin regularity of the solution is analyzed and recent results on refined Malliavin-Sobolev spaces from the Gaussian setting are extended to a Poissonian setting. For a class of path-dependent test functions, we obtain that the weak rate of convergence is twice the strong rate.
We prove a maximum principle for local solutions of quasi-linear parabolic stochastic PDEs, with non-homogeneous second order operator on a bounded domain and driven by a space-time white noise. Our method based on an approximation of the domain and the coefficients of the operator, does not require regularity assumptions. As in previous works, the results are consequences of Itô's formula and estimates for the positive part of local solutions which are non-positive on the lateral boundary.
In this paper, the distribution dependent stochastic differential equation in a separable Hilbert space with a Dini continuous drift is investigated. The existence and uniqueness of weak and strong solutions are obtained. Moreover, some regularity results as well as gradient estimates and log-Harnack inequality are derived for the associated semigroup. In addition, dimensional free Harnack inequality with power and shift Harnack inequality are also proved when the noise is additive. All of the results extend the ones in the distribution independent situation.
In the first part of the paper we develop the sensitivity analysis for the nonlinear McKean-Vlasov diffusions stressing precise estimates of growth of solutions and their derivatives with respect to the initial data, under rather general assumptions on the coefficients. The exact estimates become particularly important when treating the extension of these equations having random coefficient, since the noise is usually assumed to be unbounded. The second part contains our main results dealing with the sensitivity of stochastic McKean-Vlasov diffusions. By using the method of stochastic characte…
We prove that the weak version of the SPDE problem \begin{align*} dV_{t}(x) & = [-μV_{t}'(x) + \frac{1}{2} (σ_{M}^{2} + σ_{I}^{2})V_{t}"(x)]dt - σ_{M} V_{t}'(x)dW^{M}_{t}, \quad x > 0, \\ V_{t}(0) &= 0 \end{align*} with a specified bounded initial density, $V_{0}$, and $W$ a standard Brownian motion, has a unique solution in the class of finite-measure valued processes. The solution has a smooth density process which has a probabilistic representation and shows degeneracy near the absorbing boundary. In the language of weighted Sobolev spaces, we describe the precise order of integrability of …
We show uniqueness in law for the critical SPDE $$ dX_t = AX_t dt + (-A)^{1/2}F(X(t))dt + dW_t,\;\; X_0 =x \in H, $$ where $A$ $ : dom(A) \subset H \to H$ is a negative definite self-adjoint operator on a separable Hilbert space $H$ having $A^{-1}$ of trace class and $W$ is a cylindrical Wiener process on $H$. Here $F: H \to H $ can be continuous with at most linear growth (some functions $F$ which grow more than linearly can also be considered). This leads to new uniqueness results for generalized stochastic Burgers' equations and for three-dimensional stochastic Cahn-Hilliard type equations …
We prove that a system of locally interacting diffusions carrying discrete masses, subject to an environmental noise and undergoing mass coagulation, converges to a system of Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDEs) with Smoluchowski-type nonlinearity. Existence, uniqueness and regularity of the SPDEs are also proven.
We study quasilinear degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic stochastic partial differential equations with general multiplicative noise within the framework of kinetic solutions. Our results are twofold: First, we establish new regularity results based on averaging techniques. Second, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in a full $L^1$ setting requiring no growth assumptions on the nonlinearities. In addition, we prove a comparison result and an $L^1$-contraction property for the solutions.
Semilinear stochastic partial differential equations on bounded domains $\mathscr{D}$ are considered. The semilinear term may have arbitrary polynomial growth as long as it is continuous and monotone except perhaps near the origin. Typical examples are the stochastic Allen--Cahn and Ginzburg--Landau equations. The first main result of this article are $L^p$-estimates for such equations. The $L^p$-estimates are subsequently employed in obtaining higher regularity. This is motivated by ongoing work to obtain rate of convergence estimates for numerical approximations to such equations. It is show…
We show uniqueness in law for the critical SPDE \begin{eqnarray} \label{qq1} dX_t = AX_t dt + (-A)^{1/2}F(X(t))dt + dW_t,\;\; X_0 =x \in H, \end{eqnarray} where $A$ $ : \text{dom}(A) \subset H \to H$ is a negative definite self-adjoint operator on a separable Hilbert space $H$ having $A^{-1}$ of trace class and $W$ is a cylindrical Wiener process on $H$. Here $F: H \to H $ can be locally Hölder continuous with at most linear growth (some functions $F$ which grow more than linearly can also be considered). This leads to new uniqueness results for generalized stochastic Burgers equations and for…
In this paper we aim to find the stationary stochastic viscosity solutions of a parabolic type SPDEs through the infinite horizon backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs). For this, we study the existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions of the corresponding infinite horizon BDSDEs as well as the "perfection procedure" applied to the solutions of BDSDEs. At last the "perfect" stationary stochastic viscosity solutions of SPDEs constructed by solutions of corresponding BDSDEs are obtained.
As an important tool characterizing the long time behavior of Markov processes, the Donsker-Varadhan LDP (large deviation principle) does not directly apply to distribution dependent SDEs/SPDEs since the solutions are non-Markovian. We establish this type LDP for several different models of distribution dependent SDEs/SPDEs which may also with memories, by comparing the original equations with the corresponding distribution independent ones. As preparations, the existence, uniqueness and exponential convergence are also investigated for path-distribution dependent SPDEs which should be interes…
In this paper we study the sensitivity of nonlinear stochastic differential equations of McKean-Vlasov type generated by stable-like processes. By using the method of stochastic characteristics, we transfer these equations to the non-stochastic equations with random coefficients thus making it possible to use the results obtained for nonlinear PDE of McKean-Vlasov type generated by stable-like processes in the previous works. The motivation for studying sensitivity of nonlinear McKean-Vlasov SPDEs arises naturally from the analysis of the mean-field games with common noise.
We study the problem of existence, uniqueness and regularity of probabilistic solutions of the Cauchy problem for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations involving operators corresponding to regular (nonsymmetric) Dirichlet forms. In proofs we combine the methods of backward doubly stochastic differential equations with those of probabilistic potential theory and Dirichlet forms.
In many applications it is important to be able to sample paths of SDEs conditional on observations of various kinds. This paper studies SPDEs which solve such sampling problems. The SPDE may be viewed as an infinite dimensional analogue of the Langevin SDE used in finite dimensional sampling. Here the theory is developed for conditioned Gaussian processes for which the resulting SPDE is linear. Applications include the Kalman-Bucy filter/smoother. A companion paper studies the nonlinear case, building on the linear analysis provided here.
We prove a modification to the classical maximal inequality for stochastic convolutions in 2-smooth Banach spaces using the factorization method. This permits to study semilinear stochastic partial differential equations with unbounded diffusion operators driven by cylindrical Brownian motion via the mild solution approach. In the case of finite dimensional driving noise, provided sufficient regularity on the coefficients, we establish existence and uniqueness of strong solutions.
In terms of a nice reference probability measure, integrability conditions on the path-dependent drift are presented for (infinite-dimensional) degenerate PDEs to have regular positive solutions. To this end, the corresponding stochastic (partial) differential equations are proved to possess the weak existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as the existence, uniqueness and entropy estimates of invariant probability measures. When the reference measure satisfies the log-Sobolev inequality, Sobolev estimates are derived for the density of invariant probability measures. Some results are ne…
We study the existence and uniqueness of the stochastic viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear, possibly degenerate, second order stochastic pde with quadratic Hamiltonians associated to a Riemannian geometry. The results are new and extend the class of equations studied so far by the last two authors.
We prove existence and smoothness of the density of the solution to a nonlinear stochastic heat equation on $L^2(\mathcal{O})$ (evaluated at fixed points in time and space), where $\mathcal{O}$ is an open bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The equation is driven by an additive Wiener noise and the nonlinear drift term is the superposition operator associated to a real function which is assumed to be (maximal) monotone, continuously differentiable, and growing not faster than a polynomial. The proof uses tools of the Malliavin calculus combined with methods coming from the theory of maximal mono…
We show the pathwise uniqueness for stochastic partial differential equation driven by a cylindrical $α$-stable process with Hölder continuous drift, thus obtaining an infinite dimensional generalization of the result of Priola [Osaka J. Math., 2012] in the case $H=\mathbb{R}^d$. The proof is based on an infinite dimensional Kolmogorov equation with non-local operator.
The regularity and characterization of solutions to degenerate, quasilinear SPDE is studied. Our results are two-fold: First, we prove regularity results for solutions to certain degenerate, quasilinear SPDE driven by Lipschitz continuous noise. In particular, this provides a characterization of solutions to such SPDE in terms of (generalized) strong solutions. Second, for the one-dimensional stochastic mean curvature flow with normal noise we adapt the notion of stochastic variational inequalities to provide a characterization of solutions previously obtained in a limiting sense only. This so…
This paper investigates a numerical probabilistic method for the solution of some semilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs in short). The numerical scheme is based on discrete time approximation for solutions of systems of decoupled forward-backward doubly stochastic differential equations. Under standard assumptions on the parameters, the convergence and the rate of convergence of the numerical scheme is proven. The proof is based on a generalization of the result on the path regularity of the backward equation.
In many applications, it is important to be able to sample paths of SDEs conditional on observations of various kinds. This paper studies SPDEs which solve such sampling problems. The SPDE may be viewed as an infinite-dimensional analogue of the Langevin equation used in finite-dimensional sampling. In this paper, conditioned nonlinear SDEs, leading to nonlinear SPDEs for the sampling, are studied. In addition, a class of preconditioned SPDEs is studied, found by applying a Green's operator to the SPDE in such a way that the invariant measure remains unchanged; such infinite dimensional evolut…
We prove pathwise nonuniqueness in the stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) for some one-dimensional super-Brownian motions with immigration. In contrast to a closely related case investigated by Mueller, Mytnik and Perkins [Ann. Probab. 42 (2014) 2032-2112], the solutions of the present SPDEs are assumed to be nonnegative and have very different properties including uniqueness in law. In proving possible separation of solutions, we derive delicate properties of certain correlated approximating solutions, which is based on a novel coupling method called continuous decomposition. I…
In this paper we show that the Cahn-Hilliard stochastic SPDE has a function valued solution in dimension 4 and 5 when the perturbation is driven by a space-correlated Gaussian noise. This is done proving general results on SPDEs with globally Lipschitz coefficients associated with operators on smooth domains of $\mathbb{R}^d$ which are parabolic in the sense of Petrovskii}, and do not necessarily define a semi-group of operators. We study the regularity of the trajectories of the solutions and the absolute continuity of the law at some given time and position.
In this paper we study the regularity of non-linear parabolic PDEs and stochastic PDEs on metric measure spaces admitting heat kernels. In particular we consider mild function solutions to abstract Cauchy problems and show that the unique solution is Hölder continuous in time with values in a suitable fractional Sobolev space. As this analysis is done via a-priori estimates, we can apply this result to stochastic PDEs on metric measure spaces and solve the equation in a pathwise sense for almost all paths. The main example of noise term is of fractional Brownian type and the metric measure spa…
We prove local existence of solutions for a class of suitably renormalised coupled SPDE-ODE systems driven by space-time white noise, where the space dimension is equal to 2 or 3. This class includes in particular the FitzHugh-Nagumo system describing the evolution of action potentials of a large population of neurons, as well as models with multidimensional gating variables. The proof relies on the theory of regularity structures recently developed by M. Hairer, which is extended to include situations with semigroups that are not regularising in space. We also provide explicit expressions for…
This paper deals with the drift estimation in linear stochastic evolution equations (with emphasis on linear SPDEs) with additive fractional noise (with Hurst index ranging from 0 to 1) via least-squares procedure. Since the least-squares estimator contains stochastic integrals of divergence type, we address the problem of its pathwise (and robust to observation errors) evaluation by comparison with the pathwise integral of Stratonovich type and using its chain-rule property. The resulting pathwise LSE is then defined implicitly as a solution to a non-linear equation. We study its numerical pr…
Lemma 4.8 in the article [Regularity structures and renormalisation of FitzHugh-Nagumo SPDEs in three space dimensions, Electronic J. Probability 21 (18):1-48 (2016), arXiv:1504.02953] contains a mistake, which implies a weaker regularity estimate than the one stated in Proposition 4.11. This does not affect the proof of Theorem 2.1, but Theorems 2.2 and 2.3 only follow from the given proof if either the space dimension $d$ is equal to $2$, or the nonlinearity $F(U,V)$ is linear in $V$. To fix this problem and provide a proof of Theorems 2.2 and 2.3 valid in full generality, we consider an alt…
The finite time blowup in the almost sure sense of a class of space-time fractional stochastic partial differential equations is discussed. Both the cases of white noise and colored noise are considered. The sufficient and necessary condition between the blowup and Osgood condition is obtained when the spatial domain is bounded. And the sufficient condition for the blowup is obtained when the spatial domain is the whole space. The results in this paper could be regarded as extensions to some results in Foondun and Nualart, 2021.
We consider the approximation via modulation equations for nonlinear SPDEs on unbounded domains with additive space time white noise. Close to a bifurcation an infinite band of eigenvalues changes stability, and we study the impact of small space-time white noise on this bifurcation. As a first example we study the stochastic Swift-Hohenberg equation on the whole real line. Here due to the weak regularity of solutions the standard methods for modulation equations fail, and we need to develop new tools to treat the approximation. As an additional result we sketch the proof for local existence a…
The formalism recently introduced in arXiv:1610.08468 allows one to assign a regularity structure, as well as a corresponding "renormalisation group", to any subcritical system of semilinear stochastic PDEs. Under very mild additional assumptions, it was then shown in arXiv:1612.08138 that large classes of driving noises exhibiting the relevant small-scale behaviour can be lifted to such a regularity structure in a robust way, following a renormalisation procedure reminiscent of the BPHZ procedure arising in perturbative QFT. The present work completes this programme by constructing an action …
We survey some of our recent results on existence, uniqueness and regularity of function solutions to parabolic and transport type partial differential equations driven by non-differentiable noises. When applied pathwise to random situations, they provide corresponding statements for stochastic partial differential equations driven by fractional noises of sufficiently high regularity order. The approach is based on semigroup theory.
In this paper we consider a general class of second order stochastic partial differential equations on $\mathbb{R}^d$ driven by a Gaussian noise which is white in time and it has a homogeneous spatial covariance. Using the techniques of Malliavin calculus we derive the smoothness of the density of the solution at a fixed number of points $(t,x_1), \dots, (t,x_n)$, $t>0$, assuming some suitable regularity and non degeneracy assumptions. We also prove that the density is strictly positive in the interior of the support of the law.
We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of stochastic semilinear evolution equations with a monotone nonlinear drift term and multiplicative noise, considerably extending corresponding results obtained in previous work of ours. In particular, we assume the initial datum to be only measurable and we allow the diffusion coefficient to be locally Lipschitz-continuous. Moreover, we show, in a quantitative fashion, how the finiteness of the $p$-th moment of solutions depends on the integrability of the initial datum, in the whole range $p \in ]0,\infty[$. Lipschitz continuity of t…
Shift Harnack and integration by part formula are establish for semilinear spde with delay and a class of stochastic semilinear evolution equation which cover the hyperdissipative Naiver-Stokes/Burges equation. For the case of stochastic equation with delay, an extension to path space is given.
Generalizing the L-Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (L-KS) kernel from our earlier work, we give a novel explicit-kernel formulation useful for a large class of fourth order deterministic, stochastic, linear, and nonlinear PDEs in multispatial dimensions. These include pattern formation equations like the Swift-Hohenberg and many other prominent and new PDEs. We first establish existence, uniqueness, and sharp dimension-dependent spatio-temporal Hölder regularity for the canonical (zero drift) L-KS SPDE, driven by white noise on $\{\Rp\times\Rd\}_{d=1}^{3}$. The spatio-temporal Hölder exponents are exactl…
We give meaning to linear and semi-linear (possibly degenerate) parabolic partial differential equations with (affine) linear rough path noise and establish stability in a rough path metric. In the case of enhanced Brownian motion (Brownian motion with its Lévy area) as rough path noise the solution coincides with the standard variational solution of the SPDE.
We study linear backward stochastic partial differential equations of parabolic type with special boundary condition that connect the terminal value of the solution with a functional over the entire past solution. Uniqueness, solvability and regularity results for the solutions are obtained.
In this paper, a class of non-Markovian forward-backward doubly stochastic systems is studied. By using the technique of functional Itô (or path-dependent) calculus, the relationship between the systems and related path-dependent quasi-linear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs in short) is established, and the well-known nonlinear stochastic Feynman-Kac formula of Pardoux and Peng [Backward doubly stochastic differential equations and systems of quasilinear SPDEs, Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 98 (1994), pp. 209--227] is developed to the non-Markovian situation. Moreover, we obtai…
We study the second-order quasi-linear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) defined on $C^1$ domains. The coefficients are random functions depending on $t,x$ and the unknown solutions. We prove the uniqueness and existence of solutions in appropriate Sobolev spaces, and in addition, we obtain $L_p$ and Hölder estimates of both the solution and its gradient.
We prove existence, regularity in Hölder classes and estimates from above and below of the fundamental solution of the stochastic Langevin equation. This degenerate SPDE satisfies the weak Hörmander condition. We use a Wentzell's transform to reduce the SPDE to a PDE with random coefficients; then we apply a new method, based on the parametrix technique, to construct a fundamental solution. This approach avoids the use of the Duhamel's principle for the SPDE and the related measurability issues that appear in the stochastic framework. Our results are new even for the deterministic equation.
Regularity estimates for an integral operator with a symmetric continuous kernel on a convex bounded domain are derived. The covariance of a mean-square continuous random field on the domain is an example of such an operator. The estimates are of the form of Hilbert--Schmidt norms of the integral operator and its square root, composed with fractional powers of an elliptic operator equipped with homogeneous boundary conditions of either Dirichlet or Neumann type. These types of estimates, which couple the regularity of the driving noise with the properties of the differential operator, have imp…
We consider a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) in divergence form where the forcing term is a Gaussian noise, that is white in time and colored in space such that the gradient of the solution is Hölder-continuous, but not differentiable. Then, we prove a generalized Taylor expansion of the difference between the solution to the SPDE and the solution to its linearization around a fixed basepoint. The result is reminiscent of the theory of (controlled) rough paths and agrees with the general observation, that, in settings with a rough driver, subtracting the solution to …
The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we prove transportation inequalities ${\bf T_2}(C)$ on the space of continuous paths with respect to the uniform metric for the law of the solution to a class of non-linear monotone stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by the Wiener noise. Furthermore, we also establish the ${\bf T_1}(C)$ property for such SPDEs but with merely locally monotone coefficients, including the stochastic Burgers type equation and stochastic $2$-D Navier-Stokes equation.
