In many applications, it is important to be able to sample paths of SDEs conditional on observations of various kinds. This paper studies SPDEs which solve such sampling problems. The SPDE may be viewed as an infinite-dimensional analogue of the Langevin equation used in finite-dimensional sampling. In this paper, conditioned nonlinear SDEs, leading to nonlinear SPDEs for the sampling, are studied. In addition, a class of preconditioned SPDEs is studied, found by applying a Green's operator to the SPDE in such a way that the invariant measure remains unchanged; such infinite dimensional evolution equations are important for the development of practical algorithms for sampling infinite dimensional problems. The resulting SPDEs provide several significant challenges in the theory of SPDEs. The two primary ones are the presence of nonlinear boundary conditions, involving first order derivatives, and a loss of the smoothing property in the case of the pre-conditioned SPDEs. These challenges are overcome and a theory of existence, uniqueness and ergodicity is developed in sufficient generality to subsume the sampling problems of interest to us. The Gaussian theory developed in Part I of this paper considers Gaussian SDEs, leading to linear Gaussian SPDEs for sampling. This Gaussian theory is used as the basis for deriving nonlinear SPDEs which affect the desired sampling in the nonlinear case, via a change of measure.
In many applications it is important to be able to sample paths of SDEs conditional on observations of various kinds. This paper studies SPDEs which solve such sampling problems. The SPDE may be viewed as an infinite dimensional analogue of the Langevin SDE used in finite dimensional sampling. Here the theory is developed for conditioned Gaussian processes for which the resulting SPDE is linear. Applications include the Kalman-Bucy filter/smoother. A companion paper studies the nonlinear case, building on the linear analysis provided here.
We consider a $d$-dimensional branching particle system in a random environment. Suppose that the initial measures converge weakly to a measure with bounded density. Under the Mytnik-Sturm branching mechanism, we prove that the corresponding empirical measure $X_t^n$ converges weakly in the Skorohod space $D([0,T];M_F(\mathbb{R}^d))$ and the limit has a density $u_t(x)$, where $M_F(\mathbb{R}^d)$ is the space of finite measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also derive a stochastic partial differential equation $u_t(x)$ satisfies. By using the techniques of Malliavin calculus, we prove that $u_t(x)$ i…
The Hölder continuity of the solution to a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation arising from one dimensional super process is obtained. It is proved that the Hölder exponent in time variable is as close as to 1/4, improving the result of 1/10 in a recent paper by Li et al [3]. The method is to use the Malliavin calculus. The Hölder continuity in spatial variable x of exponent 1/2 is also obtained by using this new approach. This Hölder continuity result is sharp since the corresponding linear heat equation has the same Hölder continuity.
A series of recent articles introduced a method to construct stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) which are invariant with respect to the distribution of a given conditioned diffusion. These works are restricted to the case of elliptic diffusions where the drift has a gradient structure and the resulting SPDE is of second-order parabolic type. The present article extends this methodology to allow the construction of SPDEs which are invariant with respect to the distribution of a class of hypoelliptic diffusion processes, subject to a bridge conditioning, leading to SPDEs which are…
The goal of this paper is to develop provably efficient importance sampling Monte Carlo methods for the estimation of rare events within the class of linear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). We find that if a spectral gap of appropriate size exists, then one can identify a lower dimensional manifold where the rare event takes place. This allows one to build importance sampling changes of measures that perform provably well even pre-asymptotically (i.e. for small but non-zero size of the noise) without degrading in performance due to infinite dimensionality or due to long simul…
We consider a general class of SPDEs in $\mathbb{R}^d$ driven by a Gaussian spatially homogeneous noise which is white in time. We provide sufficient conditions on the coefficients and the spectral measure associated to the noise ensuring that the density of the corresponding mild solution admits an upper estimate of Gaussian type. The proof is based on the formula for the density arising from the integration-by-parts formula of the Malliavin calculus. Our result applies to the stochastic heat equation with any space dimension and the stochastic wave equation with $d\in \{1,2,3\}$. In these pa…
We introduce and characterize a class of flows, which turn out to be Gaussian. This characterization allows us to show, using the Monotonicity inequality, that the transpose of the flow, for an extended class of initial conditions, is the unique solution of the SPDE introduced in Rajeev and Thangavelu (2008).
The aim of this work is to give an overview of the recent developments in the area of statistical inference for parabolic stochastic partial differential equations. Significant part of the paper is devoted to the spectral approach, which is the most studied sampling scheme under which the observations are done in the Fourier space over some finite time interval. We also discuss into details the practically important case of discrete sampling of the solution. Other relevant methodologies and some open problems are briefly discussed over the course of the manuscript.
The efficient simulation of the mean value of a non-linear functional of the solution to a linear stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) with additive Gaussian noise is considered. A Galerkin finite element method is employed along with an implicit Euler scheme to arrive at a fully discrete approximation of the mild solution to the equation. A scheme is presented to compute the covariance of this approximation, which allows for rapid sampling in a Monte Carlo method. This is then extended to a multilevel Monte Carlo method, for which a scheme to compute the cross-covariance between th…
We study a constrained optimal control problem with possibly degenerate coefficients arising in models of optimal portfolio liquidation under market impact. The coefficients can be random in which case the value function is described by a degenerate backward stochastic partial differential equation (BSPDE) with singular terminal condition. For this degenerate BSPDE, we prove existence and uniqueness of a nonnegative solution. Our existence result requires a novel gradient estimate for degenerate BSPDEs.
By using a regularity approximation argument, the global existence and uniqueness are derived for a class of nonlinear SPDEs depending on both the whole history and the distribution under strong enough noise. As applications, the global existence and uniqueness are proved for distribution-path dependent stochastic transport type equations, which are arising from stochastic fluid mechanics with forces depending on the history and the environment. In particular, the distribution-path dependent stochastic Camassa--Holm equation with or without Coriolis effect has a unique global solution when the…
We consider the one-dimensional KPP-equation driven by space-time white noise and extend the construction of travelling wave solutions arising from Heavyside initial data from [Tribe, 1996, MR1396765] to non-negative continuous functions with compact support. As an application the existence of travelling wave solutions is used to prove that the support of any solution is recurrent. As a by-product, several upper measures are introduced that allow for a stochastic domination of any solution to the SPDE at a fixed point in time.
Bistability is a key property of many systems arising in the nonlinear sciences. For example, it appears in many partial differential equations (PDEs). For scalar bistable reaction-diffusions PDEs, the bistable case even has take on different names within communities such as Allee, Allen-Cahn, Chafee-Infante, Nagumo, Ginzburg-Landau, $Φ_4$, Schlögl, Stommel, just to name a few structurally similar bistable model names. One key mechanism, how bistability arises under parameter variation is a pitchfork bifurcation. In particular, taking the pitchfork bifurcation normal form for reaction-diffusio…
Importance sampling is a popular method for efficient computation of various properties of a distribution such as probabilities, expectations, quantiles etc. The output of an importance sampling algorithm can be represented as a weighted empirical measure, where the weights are given by the likelihood ratio between the original distribution and the sampling distribution. In this paper the efficiency of an importance sampling algorithm is studied by means of large deviations for the weighted empirical measure. The main result, which is stated as a Laplace principle for the weighted empirical me…
We demonstrate two examples of stochastic processes whose lifts to geometric rough paths require a renormalisation procedure to obtain convergence in rough path topologies. Our first example involves a physical Brownian motion subject to a magnetic force which dominates over the friction forces in the small mass limit. Our second example involves a lead-lag process of discretised fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H \in (1/4,1/2)$, in which the stochastic area captures the quadratic variation of the process. In both examples, a renormalisation of the second iterated integral is n…
Hierarchical Gaussian Random Fields for Multilevel Markov Chain Monte Carlo: Coupling Stochastic Partial Differential Equation and The Karhunen-Loève Decomposition
In many applications, Bayesian inverse problems can give rise to probability distributions which contain complexities due to the Hessian varying greatly across parameter space. This complexity often manifests itself as lower dimensional manifolds on which the likelihood function is invariant, or varies very little. This can be due to trying to infer unobservable parameters, or due to sloppiness in the model which is being used to describe the data. In such a situation, standard sampling methods for characterising the posterior distribution, which do not incorporate information about this struc…
Max-stable random fields play a central role in modeling extreme value phenomena. We obtain an explicit formula for the conditional probability in general max-linear models, which include a large class of max-stable random fields. As a consequence, we develop an algorithm for efficient and exact sampling from the conditional distributions. Our method provides a computational solution to the prediction problem for spectrally discrete max-stable random fields. This work offers new tools and a new perspective to many statistical inference problems for spatial extremes, arising, for example, in me…
