As an important tool characterizing the long time behavior of Markov processes, the Donsker-Varadhan LDP (large deviation principle) does not directly apply to distribution dependent SDEs/SPDEs since the solutions are non-Markovian. We establish this type LDP for several different models of distribution dependent SDEs/SPDEs which may also with memories, by comparing the original equations with the corresponding distribution independent ones. As preparations, the existence, uniqueness and exponential convergence are also investigated for path-distribution dependent SPDEs which should be interesting by themselves.
We consider a class of continuous time Markov chains on a compact metric space that admit an invariant measure strictly positive on open sets together with absorbing states. We prove the joint large deviation principle for the empirical measure and flow. Due to the lack of uniform ergodicity, the zero level set of the rate function is not a singleton. As corollaries, we obtain the Donsker-Varadhan rate function for the empirical measure and a variational expression of the rate function for the empirical flow.
We consider the weakly asymmetric exclusion process on the $d$-dimensional torus. We prove a large deviations principle for the time averaged empirical density and current in the joint limit in which both the time interval and the number of particles diverge. This result is obtained both by analyzing the variational convergence, as the number of particles diverges, of the Donsker-Varadhan functional for the empirical process and by considering the large time behavior of the hydrodynamical rate function. The large deviations asymptotic of the time averaged current is then deduced by contraction…
Estimating the data density is one of the challenging problems in deep learning. In this paper, we present a simple yet effective method for estimating the data density using a deep neural network and the Donsker-Varadhan variational lower bound on the KL divergence. We show that the optimal critic function associated with the Donsker-Varadhan representation on the KL divergence between the data and the uniform distribution can estimate the data density. We also present the deep neural network-based modeling and its stochastic learning. The experimental results and possible applications of the…
The purpose of this short note is to give a variation on the classical Donsker-Varadhan inequality, which bounds the first eigenvalue of a second-order elliptic operator on a bounded domain $Ω$ by the largest mean first exit time of the associated drift-diffusion process via $$λ_1 \geq \frac{1}{\sup_{x \in Ω} \mathbb{E}_x τ_{Ω^c}}.$$ Instead of looking at the mean of the first exit time, we study quantiles: let $d_{p, \partial Ω}:Ω\rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$ be the smallest time $t$ such that the likelihood of exiting within that time is $p$, then $$λ_1 \geq \frac{\log{(1/p)}}{\sup_{x \in…
We prove a new inequality controlling the large deviations of the empirical measure of a Markov chain. This inequality is based on the martingale used by Donsker and Varadhan and the minimax theorem. It holds for convex sets and it requires to take an infimum over the starting point. In the case of a compact space, this inequality is a partial improvement of the large deviations estimates of Donsker and Varadhan. In the case of a non compact space, we condition on the event that the process visits $n$ times a compact subset of the space and we still obtain a control on the exponential scale.
We discuss the Donsker-Varadhan theory of large deviations in the framework of Hamiltonian systems thermostated by a Gaussian stochastic coupling. We derive a general formula for the Donsker-Varadhan large deviation functional for dynamics which satisfy natural properties under time reversal. Next, we discuss the characterization of the stationary state as the solution of a variational principle and its relation to the minimum entropy production principle. Finally, we compute the large deviation functional of the current in the case of a harmonic chain thermostated by a Gaussian stochastic cou…
We prove a Stroock-Varadhan's type support theorem for a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) on the real line with a noise term driven by a cylindrical Wiener process on $L_2 (\mathbb{R})$. The main ingredients of the proof are V. Mackevicius's approach to support theorem for diffusion processes and N.V. Krylov's $L_p$-theory of SPDEs.
We formulate large deviations principle (LDP) for diffusion pair $(X^ε,ξ^ε)=(X_t^ε,ξ_t^ε)$, where first component has a small diffusion parameter while the second is ergodic Markovian process with fast time. More exactly, the LDP is established for $(X^ε,ν^ε)$ with $ν^ε(dt,dz)$ being an occupation type measure corresponding to $ξ_t^ε$. In some sense we obtain a combination of Freidlin-Wentzell's and Donsker-Varadhan's results. Our approach relies the concept of the exponential tightness and Puhalskii's theorem.
The zig-zag process is a piecewise deterministic Markov process in position and velocity space. The process can be designed to have an arbitrary Gibbs type marginal probability density for its position coordinate, which makes it suitable for Monte Carlo simulation of continuous probability distributions. An important question in assessing the efficiency of this method is how fast the empirical measure converges to the stationary distribution of the process. In this paper we provide a partial answer to this question by characterizing the large deviations of the empirical measure from the statio…
We give a new proof of the large deviation principle from the hydrodynamic limit for the Ginzberg-Landau model studied in Donsker and Varadhan (1989) using techniques from the theory of stochastic control and weak convergence methods. The proof is based on characterizing subsequential hydrodynamic limits of controlled diffusions with nearest neighbor interaction that arise from a variational representation of certain Laplace functionals. The approach taken here does not require superexponential probability estimates, estimation of exponential moments, or an analysis of eigenvalue problems, tha…
We recover the Donsker-Varadhan large deviations principle (LDP) for the empirical measure of a continuous time Markov chain on a countable (finite or infinite) state space from the joint LDP for the empirical measure and the empirical flow proved in [2].
The purpose of this paper is to establish the Donsker-Varadhan type large deviations principle (LDP) for the two-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes system. The main novelty is that the noise is assumed to be highly degenerate in the Fourier space. The proof is carried out by using a criterion for the LDP developed in arXiv:1410.6188 in a discrete-time setting and extended in arXiv:1505.03686 to the continuous-time. One of the main conditions of that criterion is the uniform Feller property for the Feynman-Kac semigroup, which we verify by using Malliavin calculus.
We consider large deviations of empirical measures of diffusion processes. In a first part, we present conditions to obtain a large deviations principle (LDP) for a precise class of unbounded functions. This provides an analogue to the standard Cramér condition in the context of diffusion processes, which turns out to be related to a spectral gap condition for a Witten-Schrödinger operator. Secondly, we study more precisely the properties of the Donsker-Varadhan rate functional associated with the LDP. We revisit and generalize some standard duality results as well as a more original decomposi…
We derive an annealed large deviation principle (LDP) for the normalised and rescaled local times of a continuous-time random walk among random conductances (RWRC) in a time-dependent, growing box in $\Z^d$. We work in the interesting case that the conductances are positive, but may assume arbitrarily small values. Thus, the underlying picture of the principle is a joint strategy of small conductance values and large holding times of the walk. The speed and the rate function of our principle are explicit in terms of the lower tails of the conductance distribution as well as the time-dependent …
