We formulate large deviations principle (LDP) for diffusion pair $(X^ε,ξ^ε)=(X_t^ε,ξ_t^ε)$, where first component has a small diffusion parameter while the second is ergodic Markovian process with fast time. More exactly, the LDP is established for $(X^ε,ν^ε)$ with $ν^ε(dt,dz)$ being an occupation type measure corresponding to $ξ_t^ε$. In some sense we obtain a combination of Freidlin-Wentzell's and Donsker-Varadhan's results. Our approach relies the concept of the exponential tightness and Puhalskii's theorem.
When a Brownian motion is scaled according to the law of the iterated logarithm, its supremum converges to one as time tends to zero. Upper large deviations of the supremum process can be quantified by writing the problem in terms of hitting times and applying a result of Strassen (1967) on hitting time densities. We extend this to a small-time large deviations principle for the supremum of scaled Ito diffusions, using as our main tool a refinement of Strassen's result due to Lerche (1986).
It is proved that the weak large deviation principle of the scaled processes $Z^\eps(t) = \eps Z(t/\eps)$ implies the weak large deviation principle for the scaled Green's measures of the Markov process $Z(t)$.
We study a double-ended queue which consists of two classes of customers. Whenever there is a pair of customers from both classes, they are matched and leave the system immediately. The matching follows first-come-first-serve principle. If a customer from one class cannot be matched immediately, he/she will stay in a queue and wait for the upcoming arrivals from the other class. Thus there cannot be non-zero numbers of customers from both classes simultaneously in the system. We also assume that each customer can leave the queue without being matched because of impatience. The arrival processe…
The Poisson--Dirichlet distribution arises in many different areas. The parameter $θ$ in the distribution is the scaled mutation rate of a population in the context of population genetics. The limiting case of $θ$ approaching infinity is practically motivated and has led to new, interesting mathematical structures. Laws of large numbers, fluctuation theorems and large-deviation results have been established. In this paper, moderate-deviation principles are established for the Poisson--Dirichlet distribution, the GEM distribution, the homozygosity, and the Dirichlet process when the parameter $…
We derive limit theorems for the empirical distribution function of "devolatilized" increments of an Itô semimartingale observed at high frequencies. These "devolatilized" increments are formed by suitably rescaling and truncating the raw increments to remove the effects of stochastic volatility and "large" jumps. We derive the limit of the empirical c.d.f. of the adjusted increments for any Itô semimartingale whose dominant component at high frequencies has activity index of $1<β\le2$, where $β=2$ corresponds to diffusion. We further derive an associated CLT in the jump-diffusion case. We use…
We obtain large deviation results for a two time-scale model of jump-diffusion processes. The processes on the two time scales are fully inter-dependent, the slow process has small perturbative noise and the fast process is ergodic. Our results extend previous large deviation results for diffusions. We provide concrete examples in their applications to finance and biology, with an explicit calculation of the large deviation rate function.
We prove a full large deviations principle in large time, for a diffusion process with random drift V, which is a centered Gaussian shear flow random field. The large deviations principle is established in a ``quenched'' setting, i.e. is valid almost surely in the randomness of V.
The paper considers a continuous-time birth-death process where the jump rate has an asymptotically polynomial dependence on the process position. We obtain a rough exponential asymptotics for the probability of excursions of a re-scaled process contained within a neighborhood of a given continuous non-negative function.
We consider two Ito equations that evolve on different time scales. The equations are fully coupled in the sense that all coefficients may depend on both the "slow" and the "fast" processes and the diffusion terms may be correlated. The diffusion term in the "slow" process is small. A large deviation principle is obtained for the joint distribution of the slow process and of the empirical measure of the fast process. By projecting on the slow and fast variables, we arrive at new results on large deviations in the averaging framework and on large deviations of the empirical measures of ergodic …
Large deviations principles characterize the exponential decay rates of the probabilities of rare events. Cerrai and Rockner [13] proved that systems of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations satisfy a large deviations principle that is uniform over bounded sets of initial data. This paper proves uniform large deviations results for a system of stochastic reaction--diffusion equations in a more general setting than Cerrai and Rockner. Furthermore, this paper identifies two common situations where the large deviations principle is uniform over unbounded sets of initial data, enabling the chara…
We derive a large deviation principle for the empirical currents of lattice gas dynamics which combine a fast stirring mechanism (Symmetric Simple Exclusion Process) and creation/annihilation mechanisms (Glauber dynamics). Previous results on the density large deviations can be recovered from this general large deviation principle. The contribution of external driving forces due to reservoirs at the boundary of the system is also taken into account.
Since T. Lyons invented rough path theory, one of its most successful applications is a new proof of Freidlin-Wentzell's large deviation principle for diffusion processes. In this paper we extend this method to the case of pinned diffusion processes under a mild ellipticity assumption. Besides rough path theory, our main tool is quasi-sure analysis, which is a kind of potential theory in Malliavin calculus.
We prove that bridges of subelliptic diffusions on a compact manifold, with distinct ends, satisfy a large deviation principle in a space of Holder continuous functions, with a good rate function, when the travel time tends to 0. This leads to the identification of the deterministic first order asymptotics of the distribution of the bridge under generic conditions on the endpoints of the bridge.
We provide Large Deviation estimates for the bridge of a $d$-dimensional general diffusion process as the conditioning time tends to $0$ and apply these results to the evaluation of the asymptotics of its exit time probabilities. We are motivated by applications to numerical simulation, especially in connection with stochastic volatility models.
We consider an iterated Kolmogorov diffusion $X_{t}$ of step $n$. The small ball problem for $X_{t}$ is solved by means of the Gaussian correlation inequality. We also prove Chung's laws of iterated logarithm for $X_{t}$ both at time zero and infinity.
We consider the superposition of a symmetric simple exclusion dynamics, speeded-up in time, with a spin-flip dynamics in a one-dimensional interval with periodic boundary conditions. We prove the hydrostatics and the dynamical large deviation principle.
For a Markov process associated with a diffusion type Dirichlet form an upper bound is shown for the law of the finite dimensional distributions of the process. Under some more assumptions on the underlaying space this is also shown for the law of the Markov process itself. In the last section we want to give an application to the Wasserstein diffusion.
In this paper, we study small noise asymptotics of Markov-modulated diffusion processes in the regime that the modulating Markov chain is rapidly switching. We prove the joint sample-path large deviations principle for the Markov-modulated diffusion process and the occupation measure of the Markov chain (which evidently also yields the large deviations principle for each of them separately by applying the contraction principle). The structure of the proof is such that we first prove exponential tightness, and then establish a local large deviations principle (where the latter part is split int…
This paper develops central limit theorems (CLT's) and large deviations results for additive functionals associated with reflecting diffusions in which the functional may include a term associated with the cumulative amount of boundary reflection that has occurred. Extending the known central limit and large deviations theory for Markov processes to include additive functionals that incorporate boundary reflection is important in many applications settings in which reflecting diffusions arise, including queueing theory and economics. In particular, the paper establishes the partial differentia…
In this paper we prove a large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical measure of a general system of mean-field interacting diffusions with singular drift (as the number of particles tends to infinity) and show convergence to the associated McKean-Vlasov equation. Along the way, we prove an extended version of the Varadhan Integral Lemma for a discontinuous change of measure and subsequently an LDP for Gibbs and Gibbs-like measures with singular potentials.
We prove a Large Deviations Principle (LDP) for systems of diffusions (particles) interacting through their ranks, when the number of particles tends to infinity. We show that the limiting particle density is given by the unique solution of the approriate McKean-Vlasov equation and that the corresponding cumulative distribution function evolves according to the porous medium equation with convection. The large deviations rate function is provided in explicit form. This is the first instance of a LDP for interacting diffusions, where the interaction occurs both through the drift and the diffusi…
We consider oscillatory systems of interacting Hawkes processes introduced in Ditlevsen and Loecherbach (2017) to model multi-class systems of interacting neurons together with the diffusion approximations of their intensity processes. This diffusion, which incorporates the memory terms defining the dynamics of the Hawkes process, is hypo-elliptic. It is given by a high dimensional chain of differential equations driven by $2-$dimensional Brownian motion. We study the large-population-, i.e., small noise-limit of its invariant measure for which we establish a large deviation result in the spir…
We consider the superposition of a symmetric simple exclusion dynamics, speeded-up in time, with a spin-flip dynamics in a one-dimensional interval with periodic boundary conditions. We prove the large deviations principle for the empirical measure under the stationary state. We deduce from this result that the stationary state is concentrated on the stationary solutions of the hydrodynamic equation which are stable.
The aim of the present paper is to extend the large deviation with discontinuous statistics studied in \cite{BDE} to the diffusion $d\mathbf{x}^\varepsilon = -\{\mathbf{A}^\top (\mathbf{A} \mathbf{x}^\varepsilon - \mathbf{y}) + μsgn(\mathbf{x}^\varepsilon)\}dt + \varepsilon d\mathbf{w}$. The discontinuity of the drift of the diffusion discussed in \cite{BDE} is equal to the hyperplane $\{\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^d:\ x_1=0\}$, however, in our case the discontinuity is more complex and is equal to the set $\{\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^d:\ \prod_{i=1}^dx_i=0\}$.
We consider the stochastic model for the propagation of a rumour within a population which was formulated by Maki and Thompson. Sudbury established that, as the population size tends to infinity, the proportion of the population never hearing the rumour converges in probability to $0.2032$. Watson later derived the asymptotic normality of a suitably scaled version of this proportion. We prove a corresponding large deviations principle, with an explicit formula for the rate function.
Let $X$ be a Lévy process with regularly varying Lévy measure $ν$. We obtain sample-path large deviations for scaled processes $\bar X_n(t) \triangleq X(nt)/n$ and obtain a similar result for random walks. Our results yield detailed asymptotic estimates in scenarios where multiple big jumps in the increment are required to make a rare event happen; we illustrate this through detailed conditional limit theorems. In addition, we investigate connections with the classical large deviations framework. In that setting, we show that a weak large deviation principle (with logarithmic speed) holds, but…
In this paper, we prove the moderate deviations principle (MDP) for a general system of slow-fast dynamics. We provide a unified approach, based on weak convergence ideas and stochastic control arguments, that cover both the averaging and the homogenization regimes. We allow the coefficients to be in the whole space and not just the torus and allow the noises driving the slow and fast processes to be correlated arbitrarily. Similar to the large deviation case, the methodology that we follow allows construction of provably efficient Monte Carlo methods for rare events that fall into the moderat…
We present precise moderate deviation probabilities, in both quenched and annealed settings, for a recurrent diffusion process with a Brownian potential. Our method relies on fine tools in stochastic calculus, including Kotani's lemma and Lamperti's representation for exponential functionals. In particular, our result for quenched moderate deviations is in agreement with a recent theorem of Comets and Popov [Probab. Theory Related Fields 126 (2003) 571-609] who studied the corresponding problem for Sinai's random walk in random environment.
The goal of this paper is to study the Moderate Deviation Principle (MDP) for a system of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations with a time-scale separation in slow and fast components and small noise in the slow component. Based on weak convergence methods in infinite dimensions and related stochastic control arguments, we obtain an exact form for the moderate deviations rate function in different regimes as the small noise and time-scale separation parameters vanish. Many issues that appear due to the infinite dimensionality of the problem are completely absent in their finite-dimensional …
We consider multiple time scales systems of stochastic differential equations with small noise in random environments. We prove a quenched large deviations principle with explicit characterization of the action functional. The random medium is assumed to be stationary and ergodic. In the course of the proof we also prove related quenched ergodic theorems for controlled diffusion processes in random environments that are of independent interest. The proof relies entirely on probabilistic arguments, allowing to obtain detailed information on how the rare event occurs. We derive a control, equiva…
The paper considers an Euler discretization based numerical scheme for approximating functionals of invariant distribution of an ergodic diffusion. Convergence of the numerical scheme is shown for suitably chosen discretization step, and a thorough error analysis is conducted by proving central limit theorem and moderate deviation principle for the error term. The paper is a first step in understanding efficiency of discretization based numerical schemes for estimating invariant distributions, which is comparatively much less studied than the schemes used for generating approximate trajectorie…
We study the large deviation estimates for the short time asymptotic behavior of a strongly degenerate diffusion process. Assuming a nilpotent structure of the Lie algebra generated by the driving vector fields, we obtain a graded large deviation principle and prove the existence of those "very rare events". In particular the first grade coincides with the classical Large Deviation Principle.
We consider a jump-diffusion process on a bounded domain with reflection at the boundary, and establish long-term results for a general additive process of its path. This includes the long-term behaviour of its occupation time in the interior and on the boundaries. We derive a characterization of the large deviation rate function which quantifies the rate of exponential decay of probabilities of rare events for paths of the process. The characterization relies on a solution of a partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) with boundary constraints. We develop a practical implementation of our…
Consider a collection of particles whose state evolution is described through a system of interacting diffusions in which each particle is driven by an independent individual source of noise and also by a small amount of noise that is common to all particles. The interaction between the particles is due to the common noise and also through the drift and diffusion coefficients that depend on the state empirical measure. We study large deviation behavior of the empirical measure process which is governed by two types of scaling, one corresponding to mean field asymptotics and the other to the Fr…
We provide sharp Large Deviation estimates for the probability of exit from a domain for the bridge of a $d$-dimensional general diffusion process $X$, as the conditioning time tends to $0$. This kind of results is motivated by applications to numerical simulation. In particular we investigate the influence of the drift $b$ of $X$. It turns out that the sharp asymptotics for the exit time probability are independent of the drift, provided $b$ enjoyes a simple condition that is always satisfied in dimension $1$. On the other hand, we show that the drift can be influential if this assumption is …
A large deviation principle is established for a two-scale stochastic system in which the slow component is a continuous process given by a small noise finite dimensional Itô stochastic differential equation, and the fast component is a finite state pure jump process. Previous works have considered settings where the coupling between the components is weak in a certain sense. In the current work we study a fully coupled system in which the drift and diffusion coefficient of the slow component and the jump intensity function and jump distribution of the fast process depend on the states of both…
In this article we establish a large deviation principle for the family {ν_ε:ε\in (0,1)} of distributions of the scaled stochastic processes {P_{-\log\sqrtε}Z_t}_{t\leq 1}, where (Z_t)_{t\in \lbrack 0,1]} is a square-integrable martingale over Brownian filtration and (P_t)_{t\geq 0} is the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup. The rate function is identified as well in terms of the Wiener-Itô chaos decomposition of the terminal value Z_{1}. The result is established by developing a continuity theorem for large deviations, together with two essential tools, the hypercontractivity of the Ornstein-Uhlenb…
A large-scale service system with multiple customer classes and multiple server pools is considered, with the mean service time depending both on the customer class and server pool. The allowed activities (routing choices) form a tree (in the graph with vertices being both customer classes and server pools). We study the behavior of the system under a {\em Leaf Activity Priority} (LAP) policy, introduced in [17]. An asymptotic regime is considered, where the arrival rate of customers and number of servers in each pool tend to infinity in proportion to a scaling parameter $r$, while the overall…
This article concerns the large deviations regime and the consequent solution of the Kramers problem for a two-time scale stochastic system driven by a common jump noise signal perturbed in small intensity $\varepsilon>0$ and with accelerated jumps by intensity $\frac{1}{\varepsilon}$. We establish Freidlin-Wentzell estimates for the slow process of the multiscale system in the small noise limit $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$ using the weak convergence approach to large deviations theory. The core of our proof is the reduction of the large deviations principle to the establishment of a stochastic…
We consider a mean-field system of path-dependent stochastic interacting diffusions in random media over a finite time window. The interaction term is given as a function of the empirical measure and is allowed to be non-linear and path dependent. We prove that the sequence of empirical measures of the full trajectories satisfies a large deviation principle with explicit rate function. The minimizer of the rate function is characterized as the path-dependent McKean-Vlasov diffusion associated to the system. As corollary, we obtain a strong law of large numbers for the sequence of empirical mea…
In this paper we study a large deviation principle of Freidlin-Wentzell type for pinned hypoelliptic diffusion measures associated with a natural sub-Laplacian on a compact sub-Riemannian manifold. To prove this large deviation principle, we use rough path theory and manifold-valued Malliavin calculus.
This paper provides a large deviation principle for Non-Markovian, Brownian motion driven stochastic differential equations with random coefficients. Similar to Gao and Liu \cite{GL}, this extends the corresponding results collected in Freidlin and Wentzell \cite{FreidlinWentzell}. However, we use a different line of argument, adapting the PDE method of Fleming \cite{Fleming} and Evans and Ishii \cite{EvansIshii} to the path-dependent case, by using backward stochastic differential techniques. Similar to the Markovian case, we obtain a characterization of the action function as the unique boun…
We study a large deviation principle for a system of stochastic reaction--diffusion equations (SRDEs) with a separation of fast and slow components and small noise in the slow component. The derivation of the large deviation principle is based on the weak convergence method in infinite dimensions, which results in studying averaging for controlled SRDEs. By appropriate choice of the parameters, the fast process and the associated control that arises from the weak convergence method decouple from each other. We show that in this decoupling case one can use the weak convergence method to charact…
We investigate exit times from domains of attraction for the motion of a self-stabilized particle traveling in a geometric (potential type) landscape and perturbed by Brownian noise of small amplitude. Self-stabilization is the effect of including an ensemble-average attraction in addition to the usual state-dependent drift, where the particle is supposed to be suspended in a large population of identical ones. A Kramers' type law for the particle's exit from the potential's domains of attraction and a large deviations principle for the self-stabilizing diffusion are proved. It turns out that …
We lead the algorithm of expansion of sojourn probability of many-dimensional diffusion processes in small domain. The principal member of this expansion defines normalizing coefficient for special limit theorems.
Taking into account some likeness of moderate deviations (MD) and central limit theorems (CLT), we develop an approach, which made a good showing in CLT, for MD analysis of a family $$ S^κ_t=\frac{1}{t^κ}\int_0^tH(X_s)ds, \ t\to\infty $$ for an ergodic diffusion process $X_t$ under $0.5<κ<1$ and appropriate $H$. We mean a decomposition with ``corrector'': $$ \frac{1}{t^κ}\int_0^tH(X_s)ds={\rm corrector}+\frac{1}{t^κ}\underbrace{M_t}_{\rm martingale}. $$ and show that, as in the CLT analysis, the corrector is negligible but in the MD scale, and the main contribution in the MD brings the family …
Large deviation for Markov processes can be studied by Hamilton--Jacobi equation techniques. The method of proof involves three steps: First, we apply a nonlinear transform to generators of the Markov processes, and verify that limit of the transformed generators exists. Such limit induces a Hamilton--Jacobi equation. Second, we show that a strong form of uniqueness (the comparison principle) holds for the limit equation. Finally, we verify an exponential compact containment estimate. The large deviation principle then follows from the above three verifications. This paper illustrates such a m…
The aim of this paper is to develop tractable large deviation approximations for the empirical measure of a small noise diffusion. The starting point is the Freidlin-Wentzell theory, which shows how to approximate via a large deviation principle the invariant distribution of such a diffusion. The rate function of the invariant measure is formulated in terms of quasipotentials, quantities that measure the difficulty of a transition from the neighborhood of one metastable set to another. The theory provides an intuitive and useful approximation for the invariant measure, and along the way many u…
