Employing the exact solution of Onsager for two-dimensional Ising models, simple expressions are proposed for computing the partition function, magnetization, specific heat and susceptibility for non-zero magnetic fields of square lattices. The partition function in zero fields is also estimated and excellent agreement with the values arising from the exact solution of Onsager is demonstrated.
An explicit expression for the partition function of two-dimensional nearest neighbour Ising models in the presence of a magnetic field is derived by a systematic enumeration of all the spin configurations pertaining to a square lattice of sixteen sites. The critical temperature is shown to be in excellent agreement with the reported values while the corresponding dimensionless magnetic field is obtained as 0.004.
Using a combinatorial method, the partition functions for two-dimensional nearest neighbour Ising models have been derived for a square lattice of 16 sites in the presence of the magnetic field. A novel hierarchical method of enumeration of all the configurations for any arrangement of sites has been proposed. This enumeration has been executed by a systematic analysis of the appropriate diagrams without employing any algorithmic approach or computational tools. The resulting algebraic eqn in terms of the magnetic field and nearest neighbour interaction energies may then provide a methodology …
We construct and analyse a dual model to the Ising model with the nearest and next-nearest neighbors on the rectangular lattice (NNNI model). The Hamiltonian of the dual model turns out to contain two- and four-spin interactions. The free fermion approximation suggests that an increase in the critical temperature of the dual model caused by the four-spin interactions is limited to a finite range.
Chen and Dohm predicted theoretically in 2004 that the widely believed universality principle is violated in the Ising model on the simple cubic lattice with more than only six nearest neighbours. Schulte and Drope by Monte Carlo simulations found such violation, but not in the predicted direction. Selke and Shchur tested the square lattice. Here we check only this universality for the susceptibility ratio near the critical point. For this purpose we study first the standard Ising model on a simple cubic lattice with six nearest neighbours, then with six nearest and twelve next-nearest neighbo…
We consider the zero temperature coarsening in the Ising model in two dimensions where the spins interact within the Moore neighbourhood. The Hamiltonian is given by $H = - \sum_{<i,j>}{S_iS_j} - κ\sum_{<i,j'>}{S_iS_{j'}}$ where the two terms are for the first neighbours and second neighbours respectively and $κ\geq 0$. The freezing phenomena, already noted in two dimensions for $κ=0$, is seen to be present for any $κ$. However, the frozen states show more complicated structure as $κ$ is increased; e.g. local anti-ferromagnetic motifs can exist for $κ>2$. Finite sized systems also show the exi…
For the spherical model with nearest-neighbour interactions, the microcanonical entropy s(e,m) is computed analytically in the thermodynamic limit for all accessible values of the energy e and the magnetization m per spin. The entropy function is found to be concave (albeit not strictly concave), implying that the microcanonical and the canonical ensembles are equivalent, despite the long-range nature of the spherical constraint the spins have to obey. Two transition lines are identified in the (e,m)-plane, separating a paramagnetic phase from a ferromagnetic and an antiferromagnetic one. The …
We study phase transitions and thermodynamic properties in the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor interaction on a Kagome lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. A histogram data analysis shows that a second order transition occurs in the model. From the analysis of obtained data, we can assume that next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions in two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model on a Kagome lattice excite the occurrence of a second order transition and unusual behavior of thermodynamic properties on the temperature dependence.
We investigate as a member of the Ising universality class the Next-Nearest Neighbour Ising model without external field on a simple cubic lattice by using the Monte Carlo Metropolis Algorithm. The Binder cumulant and the susceptibility ratio, which should be universal quantities at the critical point, were shown to vary for small negative next-nearest neighbour interactions.
We use Monte Carlo simulation to determine the stable structures in the second-neighbour Ising model on the face-centred cubic lattice. Those structures are L1_1 for strongly antiferromagnetic second neighbour interactions and L1_0 for ferromagnetic and weakly antiferromagnetic second neighbours. We find a third stable "intermediate" antiferromagnetic phase with I4_1/amd symmetry, and calculate the paramagnetic transition temperature for each. The transition temperature depends strongly on second neighbour interactions which are not frustrated. Our results contradict a recent paper, which also…
The axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model is studied in two dimensions at finite temperature using the density matrix renormalization group. The model exhibits phase transition of the second-order between the antiphase in low temperature and the modulated phase in high temperature. Observing the domain wall free energy, we confirm that the modulation period in high-temperature side is well explained by the free-fermion picture.
The three-dimensional axial-next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model is studied by a modified tensor product variational approach (TPVA). A global phase diagram is constructed with numerous commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures. The devil's stairs behavior for the model is confirmed. The wavelength of the spin modulated phases increases to infinity at the boundary with the ferromagnetic phase. Widths of the commensurate phases are considerably narrower than those calculated by mean-field approximations.
A model for the adsorption of a binary mixture on a one-dimensional infinite lattice with nearest neighbour cooperative effects is considered. The particles of the two species are both monomers but differ in the repulsive interaction experienced by them when trying to adsorb. An exact expression for the coverage of the lattice is derived. In the jamming limit, it is a monotonic function of the ratio between the attempt frequencies of the two species, varying between the values corresponding to each of the two single species. This is in contrast with the results obtained in other models for the…
The random-bond XY spin glass with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interactions is studied on a square lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. We find strong evidence for a finite-temperature spin glass transition at $T_c\approx 1.1$. We also give estimates for the spin glass critical exponents for different values of the strength of the nearest-neighbour interaction. Our results are consistent with universal behaviour.
We consider the dynamics of particles undergoing the reaction $A+A \to \emptyset$ in one dimension with a dynamic bias. Here the particles move towards their nearest neighbour with probability $0.5+ε$ where $-0.5 \leq ε< 0$. $ε_c = -0.5$ is the deterministic limit where the nearest neighbour interaction is strictly repulsive. We show that the negative bias changes drastically the behaviour of the fraction of surviving particles $ρ(t)$ and persistence probability $P(t)$ with time $t$. $ρ(t)$ decays as $a/ (\log t)^b$ where $b$ increases with $ε- ε_c$. $P(t)$ shows a stretched exponential decay …
We find an exact general solution to the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model via an exact self-consistency equation for nearest-neighbors' correlations. It is derived by means of an exact solution to the recurrence equations for partial contractions of creation and annihilation operators for constrained spin bosons in a Holstein-Primakoff representation. In particular, we calculate analytically the total irreducible self-energy, the order parameter, the correlation functions, and the joined occupation probabilities of spin bosons. The developed regular microscopic quantum-field-theory method ha…
The Binder cumulant at the phase transition of Ising models on square lattices with various ferromagnetic nearest and next-nearest neighbour couplings is determined using mainly Monte Carlo techniques. We discuss the possibility to relate the value of the critical cumulant in the isotropic, nearest neighbour and in the anisotropic cases to each other by means of a scale transformation in rectangular geometry, to pinpoint universal and nonuniversal features.
Despite their simple formulation, short range classical antiferromagnetic Ising models on frustrated lattices give rise to exotic phases of matter, in particular due to their macroscopic ground state degeneracy. Recent experiments on artificial spin systems comprising arrays of chirally coupled nanomagnets provide a significant strengthening of the nearest neighbour couplings compared to systems with dipolar-coupled nanomagnets. This opens the way to design artificial spin systems emulating Ising models with nearest neighbour couplings. In this paper, we compare the results of an extensive inv…
We report on the development of two dual worm constructions that lead to cluster algorithms for efficient and ergodic Monte Carlo simulations of frustrated Ising models with arbitrary two-spin interactions that extend up to third-neighbours on the triangular lattice. One of these algorithms generalizes readily to other frustrated systems, such as Ising antiferromagnets on the Kagome lattice with further neighbour couplings. We characterize the performance of both these algorithms in a challenging regime with power-law correlations at finite wavevector.
The zero-temperature magnetization process of a one-dimensional S=1/2 spin system with next-nearest-neighbour coupling alpha and anisotropy delta is studied. There is a region in the parameter space where the magnetization has a jump at certain external field. The boundary of this region is determined. The two cases are distinguished according as alpha<1/4 or alpha>1/4. In the latter case, the energy dispersion of the low-lying excitations exhibits a double minimum structure.
A useful property of a network that can be used to characterize many systems is the degree distribution. However, many complex networks exhibit higher--order degree correlations that must be studied through other means, such as clustering coefficients, the Newman r factor, and the average nearest neighbour degree (ANND). In this paper we develop an expansion of the conditional probability that can be used to parameterize such degree correlations. The measures of degree correlations associated with this expansion can be used to signal the presence of non--linear correlations.
We investigate sudden quenches across the critical point in the transverse field Ising chain with a perturbing non-integrable next-nearest-neighbour interaction. Expressions for the return (Loschmidt) amplitude and associated rate function are derived to linear order in the next-nearest-neighbour coupling. In the thermodynamic limit these quantities exhibit non-analytic behaviour at a set of critical times, a phenomenon referred to as a dynamical quantum phase transition. We quantify the effect of the integrability breaking perturbation on the location and shape of these non-analyticities. Our…
This paper develops results for the next nearest neighbour Ising model on random graphs. Besides being an essential ingredient in classic models for frustrated systems, second neighbour interactions interactions arise naturally in several applications such as the colour diversity problem and graphical games. We demonstrate ensembles of random graphs, including regular connectivity graphs, that have a periodic variation of free energy, with either the ratio of nearest to next nearest couplings, or the mean number of nearest neighbours. When the coupling ratio is integer paramagnetic phases can …
We discuss the hard-hexagon and hard-square problems, as well as the corresponding problem on the honeycomb lattice. The case when the activity is unity is of interest to combinatorialists, being the problem of counting binary matrices with no two adjacent 1's. For this case we use the powerful corner transfer matrix method to numerically evaluate the partition function per site, density and some near-neighbour correlations to high accuracy. In particular for the square lattice we obtain the partition function per site to 43 decimal places.
A series of symmetry-protected topological(SPT) and trivial spin-gap phases in the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic--antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with alternating next-nearest-neighbour interaction are investigated using two kinds of entanglement spectra defined by different divisions of the whole chain. In the case one of the next-nearest-neighbor interaction vanishes, the model reduces to the $Δ$-chain in which a series of spin-gap phases are found in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 77, 044707 (2008). From the degeneracy of the entanglement spectra, these phases are identified as the SPT and triv…
It is known that the normal three-dimensional (3D) Ising model on a cubic lattice is dual to the Wegner's 3D $Z_2$ lattice gauge theory. Here we find an unusual $Z_2$ lattice gauge theory which is dual to the 3D Ising model with not only nearest-neighbor (nn) coupling, but also next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) coupling. Our gauge theory has on each edge four $Z_2$ variables that have product $+1$, each located on a vector perpendicular to the edge. The nn coupling in the Ising model maps to the plaquette term in the gauge theory where the four variables multiplied have their vectors pointing inward…
Using the parallel tempering algorithm and GPU accelerated techniques, we have performed large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model on a square lattice with antiferromagnetic (repulsive) nearest-neighbor(NN) and next-nearest-neighbor(NNN) interactions of the same strength and subject to a uniform magnetic field. Both transitions from the (2x1) and row-shifted (2x2) ordered phases to the paramagnetic phase are continuous. From our data analysis, reentrance behavior of the (2x1) critical line and a bicritical point which separates the two ordered phases at T=0 are confirmed. Based on…
The critical and multicritical behavior of the simple cubic Ising model with nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor and plaquette interactions is studied using the cube and star-cube approximations of the cluster variation method and the recently proposed cluster variation--Padé approximant method. Particular attention is paid to the line of critical end points of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition: its (multi)critical exponents are calculated, and their values suggest that the transition belongs to a novel universality class. A rough estimate of the crossover exponent is also gi…
The spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) interaction is investigated. The ground state is the Haldane phase for weak NNN interaction, and is the ferromagnetic phase for weak antiferromagnetic interaction. We find a series of topologically distinct spin-gap phases with various magnitudes of edge spins for strong NNN interaction. The phase boundaries between these phases are determined on the basis of the DMRG calculation with additional spins that compensate the edge spins. It is found that each of the exact soluti…
We present an integrability-preserving recursion relation for the explicit construction of long-range spin chain Hamiltonians. These chains are generalizations of the Haldane-Shastry and Inozemtsev models and they play an important role in recent advances in string/gauge duality. The method is based on arbitrary nearest-neighbour integrable spin chains and it sheds light on the moduli space of deformation parameters. We also derive the closed chain asymptotic Bethe equations.
Ising models with frustrated next-nearest-neighbor interactions present a rich morphology of modulated phases. These phases, however, assemble and relax slowly, which hinders their computational study. In two dimensions, strong fluctuations further hamper determining their equilibrium phase behavior from theoretical approximations. The exact numerical transfer matrix (TM) method, which bypasses these difficulties, can serve as a benchmark method once its own numerical challenges are surmounted. Building on our recent study [Hu and Charbonneau, Phys. Rev. B 103, 094441 (2021)], in which we eval…
The equilibrium phase behavior of microphase-forming systems is notoriously difficult to obtain because of the extended metastability of their modulated phases. In this paper we present a systematic simulation methodology for studying layered microphases and apply the approach to two prototypical lattice-based systems: the three-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) and Ising-Coulomb (IC) models. The method involves thermodynamically integrating along a reversible path established between a reference system of free spins under an ordering field and the system of interest. The r…
The paper is concerned with interacting particle systems on the simple cubic lattice obeying the nearest neighbour exclusion (NNE). This constraint forbids any two neighbouring sites of the lattice to be simultaneously occupied, thus reducing the set of admissible configurations for the cubic cell and its subclusters such as edges and faces. This reduction extends applicability of Kikuchi's Cluster Variation Method (CVM) with higher-order clusters to systems with complex site configurations and short-range ordering, which would be impractical beyond the NNE framework because of the "curse of d…
By means of extensive computer simulations we analyze in detail the two dimensional $\pm J$ Ising spin glass with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions. We found a crossover from ferromagnetic to ``spin glass'' like order both from numerical simulations and analytical arguments. We also present evidences of a second crossover from the ``spin glass'' behavior to a paramagnetic phase for the largest volume studied.
The equilibrium phase behavior of microphase-forming substances and models is notoriously difficult to obtain because of the extended metastability of the modulated phases. We develop a simulation method based on thermodynamic integration that avoids this problem and with which we obtain the phase diagram of the canonical three-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model. The equilibrium devil's staircase, magnetization, and susceptibility are obtained. The critical exponents confirm the XY nature of the disorder-modulated phase transition beyond the Lifshitz point. The results identif…
We study Ising pyrochlores by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We cover a set of exchange constants ranging from the frustrated ferromagnetic case (spin-ice) to the fully-ordered "all-in--all-out" antiferromagnet in the dipolar model, reinterpreting the results --as in an ionic system-- in terms of a temperature vs. magnetic charge density phase diagram. In spite of its spin nature and the presence of both double and single non-conserved magnetic charges, the dipolar model gives place to a phase diagram which is quite comparable with those previously obtained for on-lattice systems of electri…
We report results of a Wang-Landau study of the random bond square Ising model with nearest- ($J_{nn}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_{nnn}$) antiferromagnetic interactions. We consider the case $R=J_{nn}/J_{nnn}=1$ for which the competitive nature of interactions produces a sublattice ordering known as superantiferromagnetism and the pure system undergoes a second-order transition with a positive specific heat exponent $α$. For a particular disorder strength we study the effects of bond randomness and we find that, while the critical exponents of the correlation length $ν$, magnetization $β$,…
Self-avoiding walks and self-avoiding trails, two models of a polymer coil in dilute solution, have been shown to be governed by the same universality class. On the other hand, self-avoiding walks interacting via nearest-neighbour contacts (ISAW) and self-avoiding trails interacting via multiply-visited sites (ISAT) are two models of the coil-globule, or collapse transition of a polymer in dilute solution. On the square lattice it has been established numerically that the collapse transition of each model lies in a different universality class. The models differ in two substantial ways. They d…
We classify all regular solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation of eight-vertex type. Regular solutions correspond to spin chains with nearest-neighbour interactions. We find a total of four independent solutions. Two are related to the usual six- and eight-vertex models that have R-matrices of difference form. We find two completely new solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, which are manifestly of non-difference form. These new solutions contain the S-matrices of the AdS2 and AdS3 integrable models as a special case. Consequently, we can classify all possible integrable deformations of eight-v…
In this communication with computer simulation we evaluate simple cubic random-site percolation thresholds for neighbourhoods including the nearest neighbours (NN), the next-nearest neighbours (2NN) and the next-next-nearest neighbours (3NN). Our estimations base on finite-size scaling analysis of the percolation probability vs. site occupation probability plots. The Hoshen--Kopelman algorithm has been applied for cluster labelling. The calculated thresholds are 0.1372(1), 0.1420(1), 0.0976(1), 0.1991(1), 0.1036(1), 0.2455(1) for (NN + 2NN), (NN + 3NN), (NN + 2NN + 3NN), 2NN, (2NN + 3NN), 3NN …
We classify all fundamental integrable spin chains with two-dimensional local Hilbert space which have regular R-matrices of difference form. This means that the R-matrix underlying the integrable structures is of the form R(u,v)=R(u-v) and reduces to the permutation operator at some particular point. We find a total of 14 independent solutions, 8 of which correspond to well-known eight or lower vertex models. The remaining 6 models appear to be new and some have peculiar properties such as not being diagonalizable or being nilpotent. Furthermore, for even R-matrices, we find a bijection betwe…
