Let $Γ\subset \operatorname{PU}(1,n)$ be a lattice, and $S_Γ$ the associated ball quotient. We prove that, if $S_Γ$ contains infinitely many maximal totally geodesic subvarieties, then $Γ$ is arithmetic. We also prove an Ax-Schanuel Conjecture for $S_Γ$, similar to the one recently proven by Mok, Pila and Tsimerman. One of the main ingredients in the proofs is to realise $S_Γ$ inside a period domain for polarised integral variations of Hodge structures and interpret totally geodesic subvarieties as unlikely intersections.
We introduce the notion of dR-absolutely special subvarieties in motivic variations of Hodge structure as special subvarieties cut out by (de Rham-)absolute Hodge cycles and conjecture that all special subvarieties are dR-absolutely special. This is implied by Deligne's conjecture that all Hodge cycles are absolute Hodge cycles, but is a much weaker conjecture. We prove our conjecture for subvarieties satisfying a simple monodromy condition introduced by Klingler-Otwinowska-Urbanik. We study applications to typical respectively atypical intersections and $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$-bialgebraic subvarie…
We establish a blow-up formula for Hodge cohomology of locally free sheaves on smooth proper varieties over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. For this, we introduce a notion of relative Hodge sheaves and study their behavior under blow-ups along smooth centers. In particular, as an application, we study the blow-up invariance of the $E_2$-degeneracy of the Hochschild--Kostant--Rosenberg spectral sequence for smooth proper varieties.
In this paper we extend the construction of the canonical polarized variation of Hodge structures over tube domain considered by B. Gross in \cite{G} to bounded symmetric domain and introduce a series of invariants of infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures, which we call characteristic subvarieties. We prove that the characteristic subvariety of the canonical polarized variations of Hodge structures over irreducible bounded symmetric domains are identified with the characteristic bundles defined by N. Mok in \cite{M}. We verified the generating property of B. Gross for all irreducible bou…
Let $\mathbb{V}$ be a polarized variation of integral Hodge structure on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$. In this paper, we show that the union of the non-factor special subvarieties for $(S, \mathbb{V})$, which are of Shimura type with dominant period maps, is a finite union of special subvarieties of $S$. This generalizes previous results of Clozel and Ullmo arXiv:math/0404131, Ullmo \cite{Ullmo07} on the distribution of the non-factor (in particular, strongly) special subvarieties in a Shimura variety to the non-classical setting and also answers positively the geometric part …
Arithmetic quotients are quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups, and modular subvarieties of arithmetic quotients are themselves arithmetic quotients of lower dimension which live on arithmetic quotients, by an embedding induced from an inclusion of groups of hermitian type. We show the existence of such modular subvarieties, drawing on earlier work of the author. If $Γ$ is a fixed arithmetic subgroup, maximal in some sense, then we introduce the notion of ``$Γ$-integral symmetric'' subgroups, which in turn defines a notion of ``integral modular subvarieties'', and we show…
A polarizable variation of Hodge structure over a smooth complex quasi projective variety $S$ is said to be defined over a number field $L$ if $S$ and the algebraic connection associated to the variation are both defined over $L$. Conjecturally any special subvariety (also called "an irreducible component of the Hodge locus) for such variations is defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, and its Galois conjugates are also special subvarieties. We prove this conjecture for special subvarieties satisfying a simple monodromy condition. As a corollary we reduce the conjecture that special subvarietie…
We present a new criterion for the complex hyperbolicity of a non-compact quotient X of a bounded symmetric domain. For each p $\ge$ 1, this criterion gives a precise condition under which the subvarieties V $\subset$ X with dim V $\ge$ p are of general type, and X is p-measure hyperbolic. Then, we give several applications related to ball quotients, or to the Siegel moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. For example, we determine effective levels l for which the moduli spaces of genus g curves with l-level structures are of general type.
When a reductive group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective scheme $X$ there is a stratification of $X$ into $G$-invariant locally closed subschemes, with an open stratum $X^{ss}$ formed by the semistable points in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory which has a categorical quotient $X^{ss} \to X//G$. In this article we describe a method for constructing quotients of the unstable strata. As an application, we construct moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type with some extra data (an '$n$-rigidification') on a projective base.
The relative proportionality principle of Hirzebruch and Höfer was discovered in the case of compactified ball quotient surfaces X when studying curves C in X. It can be expressed as an inequality which attains equality precisely when C is an induced quotient of a subball. A similar inequality holds for curves on Hilbert modular surfaces. In this paper we prove a generalization of this result to subvarieties of Shimura varieties of orthogonal type, i.e. locally symmetric spaces for the Lie group SO(n,2). Furthermore we study the ''inverse problem'' of deciding when an arbitrary subvariety Z of…
We establish the Hodge conjecture for some subvarieties of a class of toric varieties. First we study quasi-smooth intersections in a projective simplicial toric variety, which is a suitable notion to generalize smooth complete intersection subvarieties in the toric environment, and in particular quasi-smooth hypersurfaces. We show that under appropriate conditions, the Hodge Conjecture holds for a very general quasi-smooth intersection subvariety, generalizing the work on quasi-smooth hypersurfaces of the first author and Grassi in [3]. We also show that the Hodge Conjecture holds asymptotica…
Let $X$ be a quotient of a bounded domain in $\mathbb C^n$. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that every subvariety of $X$ not included in the branch locus of the quotient map is of log general type in some orbifold sense. This generalizes a recent result by Boucksom and Diverio, which treated the case of compact, étale quotients. Finally, in the case where $X$ is compact, we give a sufficient condition under which there exists a proper analytic subset of $X$ containing all entire curves and all subvarieties not of general type (meant this time in in the usual sense as opposed to the orbifo…
We introduce $\ell$-Galois special subvarieties as an $\ell$-adic analog of the Hodge-theoretic notion of a special subvariety. The Mumford-Tate conjecture predicts that both notions are equivalent. We study some properties of these subvarieties and prove this equivalence for subvarieties satisfying a simple monodromy condition. As applications, we show that the $\ell$-Galois exceptional locus is a countable union of algebraic subvarieties and, if the derived group of the generic Mumford-Tate group of a family is simple, its part of positive period dimension coincides with the Hodge locus of p…
A conjecture by Yves Andre and Frans Oort says that closed subvarieties of Shimura varieties that contain a Zariski dense subset of special points are subvarieties of Hodge type. We prove this in the case where the subvariety is a curve that contains infinitely many special points that lie in one Hecke orbit. Via work of Juergen Wolfart, Paula Cohen and Gisbert Wuestholz, this result has an application to algebraicity of values of hypergeometric functions.
We study the $L^2$--cohomology of certain local systems on non-compact arithmetic ball quotients $X=Γ\backslash \B_n$, in particular vanishing and non--vanishing results. We also give generalizations to higher dimensional ball quotients and study the mixed Hodge structure on the sheaf cohomology of a local system with the $L^2$-cohomology contributing to the lowest weight part.
We discuss and extend some of the results obtained in "Arakelov inequalities and the uniformization of certain rigid Shimura varieties" (math.AG/0503339), restricting ourselves to the two dimensional case, i.e. to surfaces Y mapping generically finite to the moduli stack of Abelian varieties. In particular we show that Y is a Hilber modular surfaces if and only if the dergee of the Hodge bundle satisfies the Arakelov equality. In the revised version, we corrected some minor mistakes, pointed out by the referee, and we tried to improve the presentation of the text.
Let M be a hyperkaehler manifold, not necessarily compact, and $S\cong CP^1$ the set of complex structures induced by the quaternionic action. Trianalytic subvariety of M is a subvariety which is complex analytic with respect to all $I \in CP^1$. We show that for all $I \in S$ outside of a countable set, all compact complex subvarieties $Z \subset (M,I)$ are trianalytic. For M compact, this result was proven in alg-geom/9403006 using Hodge theory.
We study Shimura (special) subvarieties in the moduli space $A_{p,D}$ of complex abelian varieties of dimension $p$ and polarization type $D$. These subvarieties arise from families of covers compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve such that the quotient of the base curve by the group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1$. We give a criterion for the image of these families under the Prym map to be a special subvariety and, using computer algebra, obtain 210 Shimura subvarieties contained in the Prym locus.
We announce the construction of toroidal partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. They are moduli spaces of log mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. We include an application to the analyticity of zero loci of some functions.
This paper continues the study of non-general type subvarieties begun in a joint paper with M.Schneider and A.Sommese (Int.L.Math. 10, 1999). We prove uniruledness of a projective manifold containing a submanifold not of general type whose normal bundle has positivity properties and moreover study the rational quotient. We also relate the fundamental groups and prove a cohomological criterion for a manifold to be rationally connected.
We prove that the uniformizing map of any arithmetic quotient, as well as the period map associated to any pure polarized $\mathbb{Z}$-variation of Hodge structure $\mathbb{V}$ on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$, are topologically tame. As an easy corollary of these results and of Peterzil-Starchenko's o-minimal GAGA theorem we obtain that the Hodge locus of $(S, \mathbb{V})$ is a countable union of algebraic subvarieties of $S$ (a result originally due to Cattani-Deligne-Kaplan).
We compute the Hodge numbers for the quotients of complete intersection Calabi-Yau three-folds by groups of orders divisible by 4. We make use of the polynomial deformation method and the counting of invariant Kähler classes. The quotients studied here have been obtained in the automated classification of V. Braun. Although the computer search found the freely acting groups, the Hodge numbers of the quotients were not calculated. The freely acting groups, $G$, that arise in the classification are either $Z_2$ or contain $Z_4$, $Z_2 \times Z_2$, $Z_3$ or $Z_5$ as a subgroup. The Hodge numbers f…
We show that for a variety which admits a quasi-finite period map, finiteness (resp.~non-Zariski-density) of $S$-integral points implies finiteness (resp.~non-Zariski-density) of points over all $\mathbb{Z}$-finitely generated integral domains of characteristic zero. Our proofs rely on foundational results in Hodge theory due to Deligne, Griffiths, and Schmid, and Bakker-Brunebarbe-Tsimerman. We give straightforward applications to Shimura varieties, locally symmetric varieties, the moduli space of smooth hypersurfaces in projective space, and the moduli of smooth divisors in an abelian variet…
In this paper we prove the following results: $1)$ We show that any arithmetic quotient of a homogeneous space admits a natural real semi-algebraic structure for which its Hecke correspondences are semi-algebraic. A particularly important example is given by Hodge varieties, which parametrize pure polarized integral Hodge structures. $2)$ We prove that the period map associated to any pure polarized variation of integral Hodge structures $\mathbb{V}$ on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$ is definable with respect to an o-minimal structure on the relevant Hodge variety induced by the…
In this note we survey recent results on the extrinsic geometry of the Jacobian locus inside $\mathsf{A}_g$. We describe the second fundamental form of the Torelli map as a multiplication map, recall the relation between totally geodesic subvarieties and Hodge loci and survey various results related to totally geodesic subvarieties and the Jacobian locus.
We prove the vanishing modulo torsion of the higher direct images of the sheaf of Witt vectors (and the Witt canonical sheaf) for a purely inseparable projective alteration between normal finite quotients over a perfect field. For this, we show that the relative Hodge-Witt cohomology admits an action of correspondences. As an application we define Witt-rational singularities which form a broader class than rational singularities. In particular, finite quotients have Witt-rational singularities. In addition, we prove that the torsion part of the Witt vector cohomology of a smooth, proper scheme…
Let $S$ be a closed Shimura variety uniformized by the complex $n$-ball. The Hodge conjecture predicts that every Hodge class in $H^{2k} (S, \Q)$, $k=0, \ldots, n$, is algebraic. We show that this holds for all degree $k$ away from the neighborhood $]n/3, 2n/3[$ of the middle degree. We also address the Tate conjecture and the generalized form of the Hodge conjecture and extend most of our results to Shimura varieties associated to unitary groups of any signature. The proofs make use of the recent endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of classical groups by \cite{ArthurBook,…
The Kuga-Satake construction associates to a K3 type polarized weight 2 Hodge structure H an abelian variety A such that H is a quotient Hodge structure of H^2(A). The first step is to consider the Clifford algebra of H. It turns out that it is endowed with a weight 2 Hodge structure compatible with the algebra structure. We show more generally that a weight 2 polarized Hodge structure which carries a compatible (unitary, associative) algebra structure is a quotient of the H^2 of an abelian variety.
We establish an unexpected relation among the Weil-Petersson metric, the generalized Hodge metrics and the BCOV torsion. Using this relation, we prove that certain kind of moduli spaces of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds do not admit complete subvarieties. That is, there is no complete family for certain class of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. We also give an estimate of the complex Hessian of the BCOV torsion using the relation. After establishing a degenerate version of the Schwarz Lemma of Yau, we prove that the complex Hessian of the BCOV torsion is bounded by the Poincaré metric.
The dimensions of the graded quotients of the cohomology of a plane curve complement with respect to the Hodge filtration are described in terms of simple geometrical invariants. The case of curves with ordinary singularities is discussed in detail.
This paper gives a complete parametrization of the commensurability classes of totally geodesic subspaces of irreducible arithmetic quotients of $X_{a, b} = (\mathbf{H}^2)^a \times (\mathbf{H}^3)^b$. A special case describes all Shimura subvarieties of type $\mathrm{A}_1$ Shimura varieties. We produce, for any $n\geq 1$, examples of manifolds/Shimura varieties with precisely $n$ commensurability classes of totally geodesic submanifolds/Shimura subvarieties. This is in stark contrast with the previously studied cases of arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-manifolds and quaternionic Shimura surfaces, wher…
We establish a relationship between the graded quotients of a filtered holonomic D-module, their sheaf-theoretic duals, and the characteristic variety, in case the filtered D-module underlies a polarized Hodge module on a smooth algebraic variety. The proof is based on Saito's result that the associated graded module is Cohen-Macaulay, and on local duality on the cotangent bundle.
A flag domain D = G/V for G a simple real non-compact group G with compact Cartan subgroup is non-classical if it does not fiber holomorphically or anti-holomorphically over a Hermitian symmetric space. We prove that any two points in a non-classical domain D can be joined by a finite chain of compact subvarieties of D. Then we prove that for F an infinite, finitely generated discrete subgroup of G, the analytic space F\D does not have an algebraic structure.
In this paper we study Hodge classes on complex abelian varieties. We prove some general results that allow us, in certain cases, to compute the Hodge group of a product abelian variety $X = X_1 \times X_2$ once we know the Hodge groups of the two factors. Using these results we can compute the Hodge groups of all abelian varieties of dimension $\leq 5$. We prove that the Hodge ring of any such abelian variety $X$ is generated by divisor classes together with the so-called Weil classes on (quotients of) $X$.
Given a prime $\ell\geq 3$ and a positive integer $k \le \ell-2$, one can define a matrix $D_{k,\ell}$, the so-called Demjanenko matrix, whose rank is equal to the dimension of the Hodge group of the Jacobian ${\mathrm Jac}({\mathcal C}_{k,\ell})$ of a certain quotient of the Fermat curve of exponent $\ell$. For a fixed $\ell$, the existence of $k$ for which $D_{k,\ell}$ is singular (equivalently, for which the rank of the Hodge group of ${\mathrm Jac}({\mathcal C}_{k,\ell})$ is not maximal) has been extensively studied in the literature. We provide an asymptotic formula for the number of such…
Let X be a Mumford-Tate variety, i.e., a quotient of a Mumford-Tate domain D by a discrete subgroup. Mumford-Tate varieties are generalizations of Shimura varieties. We define the notion of a special subvariety Y in X (of Shimura type), and formulate necessary criteria for Y to be special. Our method consists in looking at finitely many compactified special curves C_i in Y, and testing whether the inclusion of the union of all C_i in Y satisfies certain properties. One of them is the so-called relative proportionality condition. In this paper, we give a new formulation of this numerical criter…
We prove that any compact Kähler 3-dimensional manifold which has no non-trivial complex subvarieties is a torus. This is a very special case of a general conjecture on the structure of 'simple manifolds', central in the bimeromorphic classification of compact Kähler manifolds. The proof follows from the Brunella pseudo-effectivity theorem, combined with fundamental results of Siu and of the second author on the Lelong numbers of closed positive (1,1)-currents, and with a version of the hard Lefschetz theorem for pseudo-effective line bundles, due to Takegoshi and Demailly-Peternell-Schneider.…
We present a complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifold Y that has Euler number -72 and which admits free actions by two groups of automorphisms of order 12. These are the cyclic group Z_12 and the non-Abelian dicyclic group Dic_3. The quotient manifolds have chi=-6 and Hodge numbers (h^11,h^21)=(1,4). With the standard embedding of the spin connection in the gauge group, Y gives rise to an E_6 gauge theory with 3 chiral generations of particles. The gauge group may be broken further by means of the Hosotani mechanism combined with continuous deformation of the background gauge field. For the n…
We show that all subvarieties of a quotient of a bounded symmetric domain by a sufficiently small arithmetic discrete group of automorphisms are of general type. This result corresponds through the Green-Griffiths-Lang's conjecture to a well-known result of Nadel.
This paper is an exposition of the completion of a modular group with respect to its inclusion into SL_2(Q) and the connection with the theory of modular forms and variations of mixed Hodge structure over modular curves. Among the goals of this paper are to give a context to Manin's iterated Shimura integrals (iterated integrals of modular forms) and to study relations in the "maximal Eisenstein quotient" of the completion of SL_2(Z). In particular, we use a computation of Terasoma to prove that Pollack's quadratic relations in the derivation Lie algebra of a rank two free Lie algebra lift to …
Let X be a smooth projective complex variety, of dimension 3, whose Hodge numbers h^{3,0}(X), h^{1,0}(X) both vanish. Let f: X--> X be a birational map that induces an isomorphism on (dense) open subvarieties U,V of X. Then we show that the complex reduced varieties (X \ U), (X \ V) are piecewise isomorphic.
In this note, we consider crepant resolutions of the quotient varieties of smooth quintic threefolds by Gorenstein group actions. We compute their Hodge numbers via McKay correspondence. In this way, we find some new pairs $(h^{1,1},\;h^{2,1})$ of Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau threefolds.
The aim of this paper is to construct Calabi-Yau 4-folds as crepant resolutions of the quotients of a hyperkähler 4-fold $X$ by a non symplectic involution $α$. We first compute the Hodge numbers of a Calabi-Yau constructed in this way in a general setting and then we apply the results to several specific examples of non symplectic involutions, producing Calabi-Yau 4-folds with different Hodge diamonds. Then we restrict ourselves to the case where $X$ is the Hilbert scheme of two points on a K3 surface $S$ and the involution $α$ is induced by a non symplectic involution on the K3 surface. In t…
Let X be a nonsingular complex projective variety that is acted on by a reductive group $G$ and such that $X^{ss} \neq X_{(0)}^{s}\neq \emptyset$. We give formulae for the Hodge--Poincaré series of the quotient $X_{(0)}^s/G$. We use these computations to obtain the corresponding formulae for the Hodge--Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space of properly stable vector bundles when the rank and the degree are not coprime. We compute explicitly the case in which the rank equals 2 and the degree is even.
Using Atiyah-Bott localization on the space of stable maps to the stack quotient $[\mathbb{P}^1/\mathbb{Z}_2]$, we find recursions that determine all Hodge integrals with descendent insertions at one marked point on the hyperelliptic locus $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g, 2g + 2} \subseteq \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, 2g + 2}$. The initial conditions required for our recursions are gravitational descendents at one marked point, which are known to be $\frac{1}{2}$. We discover a new structure concerning these intersection numbers: for a fixed monomial of $λ$-classes, the resulting family of hyperellip…
We prove the structure theorem of the intersection complexes of toric varieties in the category of mixed Hodge modules. This theorem is due to Bernstein, Khovanskii and MacPherson for the underlying complexes with rational coefficients. As a corollary the Euler characteristic Hodge numbers of non-degenerate toric hypersurface can be determined by the Euler characteristic subtotal Hodge numbers together with combinatorial data of Newton polyhedra. This is used implicitly in an explicit formula by Batyrev--Borisov. Note that a formula for the Euler characteristic subtotal Hodge numbers in terms …
Let Z_3 act on C^2 by non-trivial opposite characters. Let X =[C^2/Z_3] be the orbifold quotient, and let Y be the unique crepant resolution. We show the equivariant genus 0 Gromov-Witten potentials of X and Y are equal after a change of variables -- verifying the Crepant Resolution Conjecture for the pair (X,Y). Our computations involve Hodge integrals on trigonal Hurwitz spaces which are of independent interest. In a self contained Appendix, we derive closed formulas for these Hurwitz-Hodge integrals.
