Let $X=Γ\backslash \mathbb{B}^{n} $ be an $n$-dimensional complex ball quotient by a torsion-free non-uniform lattice $Γ$ whose parabolic subgroups are unipotent. We prove that the volumes of subvarieties of $X$ are controlled by the systole of $X,$ which is the length of the shortest closed geodesic of $X$.
There are a number of arithmetic and geometric consequences: the systole of $X$ controls the growth rate of rational points on $X,$ uniformly in the field of definition. Also, we obtain effective global generation and very ampleness results for multiples of the canonical bundle $K_{\overline{X}},$ where $\overline{X}$ is the toroidal compactification of $X.$ These results follow from the bound we find for the Seshadri constant of $K_{\overline{X}}$ in terms of the systole.
Let $X$ be a quotient of a bounded domain in $\mathbb C^n$. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that every subvariety of $X$ not included in the branch locus of the quotient map is of log general type in some orbifold sense. This generalizes a recent result by Boucksom and Diverio, which treated the case of compact, étale quotients. Finally, in the case where $X$ is compact, we give a sufficient condition under which there exists a proper analytic subset of $X$ containing all entire curves and all subvarieties not of general type (meant this time in in the usual sense as opposed to the orbifo…
Arithmetic quotients are quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups, and modular subvarieties of arithmetic quotients are themselves arithmetic quotients of lower dimension which live on arithmetic quotients, by an embedding induced from an inclusion of groups of hermitian type. We show the existence of such modular subvarieties, drawing on earlier work of the author. If $Γ$ is a fixed arithmetic subgroup, maximal in some sense, then we introduce the notion of ``$Γ$-integral symmetric'' subgroups, which in turn defines a notion of ``integral modular subvarieties'', and we show…
By means of the theory of strongly semistable sheaves and of the theory of the Greenberg transform, we generalize to higher dimensions a result on the sparsity of p-divisible unramified liftings which played a crucial role in Raynaud's proof of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for curves. We also give a bound for the number of irreducible components of the first critical scheme of subvarieties of an abelian variety which are complete intersections.
We present a new criterion for the complex hyperbolicity of a non-compact quotient X of a bounded symmetric domain. For each p $\ge$ 1, this criterion gives a precise condition under which the subvarieties V $\subset$ X with dim V $\ge$ p are of general type, and X is p-measure hyperbolic. Then, we give several applications related to ball quotients, or to the Siegel moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. For example, we determine effective levels l for which the moduli spaces of genus g curves with l-level structures are of general type.
When a reductive group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective scheme $X$ there is a stratification of $X$ into $G$-invariant locally closed subschemes, with an open stratum $X^{ss}$ formed by the semistable points in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory which has a categorical quotient $X^{ss} \to X//G$. In this article we describe a method for constructing quotients of the unstable strata. As an application, we construct moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type with some extra data (an '$n$-rigidification') on a projective base.
The relative proportionality principle of Hirzebruch and Höfer was discovered in the case of compactified ball quotient surfaces X when studying curves C in X. It can be expressed as an inequality which attains equality precisely when C is an induced quotient of a subball. A similar inequality holds for curves on Hilbert modular surfaces. In this paper we prove a generalization of this result to subvarieties of Shimura varieties of orthogonal type, i.e. locally symmetric spaces for the Lie group SO(n,2). Furthermore we study the ''inverse problem'' of deciding when an arbitrary subvariety Z of…
A nilmanifold is a (left) quotient of a nilpotent Lie group by a cocompact lattice. A hypercomplex structure on a manifold is a triple of complex structure operators satisfying the quaternionic relations. A hypercomplex nilmanifold is a compact quotient of a nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant hypercomplex structure. Such a manifold admits a whole 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$ of complex structures induced by quaternions. We prove that for any hypercomplex nilmanifold $M$ and a generic complex structure $L\in S^2$, the complex manifold $(M,L)$ has algebraic dimension 0. A stronger …
We prove that any compact Kähler 3-dimensional manifold which has no non-trivial complex subvarieties is a torus. This is a very special case of a general conjecture on the structure of 'simple manifolds', central in the bimeromorphic classification of compact Kähler manifolds. The proof follows from the Brunella pseudo-effectivity theorem, combined with fundamental results of Siu and of the second author on the Lelong numbers of closed positive (1,1)-currents, and with a version of the hard Lefschetz theorem for pseudo-effective line bundles, due to Takegoshi and Demailly-Peternell-Schneider.…
We determine positive-dimensional G-periodic proper subvarieties of an n-dimensional normal projective variety X under the action of an abelian group G of maximal rank n-1 and of positive entropy. The motivation of the paper is to understand the obstruction for X to be G-equivariant birational to the quotient variety of an abelian variety modulo the action of a finite group.
We show that infinitely many Gorenstein weakly-exceptional quotient singularities exist in all dimensions, we prove a weak-exceptionality criterion for five-dimensional quotient singularities, and we find a sufficient condition for being weakly-exceptional for six-dimensional quotient singularities. The proof is naturally linked to various classical geometrical constructions related to subvarieties of small degree in projective spaces, in particular Bordiga surfaces and Bordiga threefolds.
We prove that the uniformizing map of any arithmetic quotient, as well as the period map associated to any pure polarized $\mathbb{Z}$-variation of Hodge structure $\mathbb{V}$ on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$, are topologically tame. As an easy corollary of these results and of Peterzil-Starchenko's o-minimal GAGA theorem we obtain that the Hodge locus of $(S, \mathbb{V})$ is a countable union of algebraic subvarieties of $S$ (a result originally due to Cattani-Deligne-Kaplan).
We show that all subvarieties of a quotient of a bounded symmetric domain by a sufficiently small arithmetic discrete group of automorphisms are of general type. This result corresponds through the Green-Griffiths-Lang's conjecture to a well-known result of Nadel.
Let $G'$ be a complex semisimple group, and let $G \subseteq G'$ be a semisimple subgroup. We show that the branching cone of the pair $(G, G')$, which (asymptotically) parametrizes all pairs $(W, V)$ of irreducible finite-dimensional $G$-representations $W$ which occur as subrepresentations of a finite-dimensional irreducible $G'$-representation $V$, can be identified with the pseudo-effective cone, $\overline{\mbox{Eff}}(Y)$, of some GIT quotient $Y$ of the flag variety of the group $G \times G'$. Moreover, we prove that the quotient $Y$ is a Mori dream space. As a consequence, the global Ok…
An algebraic zip datum is a tuple $\CZ := (G,P,Q,ϕ)$ consisting of a reductive group $G$ together with parabolic subgroups $P$ and $Q$ and an isogeny $ϕ\colon P/R_uP\to Q/R_uQ$. We study the action of the group $E := \{(p,q)\in P{\times}Q | ϕ(π_{P}(p)) =π_Q(q)\}$ on $G$ given by $((p,q),g)\mapsto pgq^{-1}$. We define certain smooth $E$-invariant subvarieties of $G$, show that they define a stratification of $G$. We determine their dimensions and their closures and give a description of the stabilizers of the $E$-action on $G$. We also generalize all results to non-connected groups. We show tha…
Let $(X, D)$ be a logarithmic pair, and let $h$ be a singular metric on the tangent bundle, smooth on the open part of $X$. We give sufficient conditions on the curvature of $h$ for the logarithmic and the standard cotangent bundles to be big. As an application, we give a metric proof of the bigness of logarithmic cotangent bundle on any toroidal compactification of a bounded symmetric domain. Then, we use this singular metric approach to study the bigness and the nefness of the standard tangent bundle in the more specific case of the ball. We obtain effective ramification orders for a cover $…
