We provide a purely topological characterisation of uniquely ergodic topological dynamical systems (TDSs) whose unique invariant measure is zero entropy loosely Bernoulli (following Ratner, we call such measures loosely Kronecker). At the heart of our proofs lies Feldman-Katok continuity (FK-continuity for short), that is, continuity with respect to the change of metric to the Feldman-Katok pseudometric. Feldman-Katok pseudometric is a topological analog of f-bar (edit) metric for symbolic systems. We also study an opposite of FK-continuity, coined FK-sensitivity. We obtain a version of Auslander-Yorke dichotomies: minimal TDSs are either FK-continuous or FK-sensitive, and transitive TDSs are either almost FK-continuous or FK-sensitive.
M. Foreman and B. Weiss obtained an anti-classification result for smooth ergodic diffeomorphisms, up to measure isomorphism, by using a functor $\mathcal{F}$ mapping odometer-based systems, $\mathcal{OB}$, to circular systems, $\mathcal{CB}$. This functor transfers the classification problem from $\mathcal{OB}$ to $\mathcal{CB}$, and it preserves weakly mixing extensions, compact extensions, factor maps, the rank-one property, and certain types of isomorphisms. Thus it is natural to ask whether $\mathcal{F}$ preserves other dynamical properties. We show that $\mathcal{F}$ does not preserve th…
Let $M$ be a smooth compact connected manifold of dimension $d\geq 2$, possibly with boundary, that admits a smooth effective $\mathbb{T}^2$-action $\mathcal{S}=\left\{S_{α,β}\right\}_{(α,β) \in \mathbb{T}^2}$ preserving a smooth volume $ν$, and let $\mathcal{B}$ be the $C^{\infty}$ closure of $\left\{h \circ S_{α,β} \circ h^{-1} \;:\;h \in \text{Diff}^{\infty}\left(M,ν\right), (α,β) \in \mathbb{T}^2\right\}$. We construct a $C^{\infty}$ diffeomorphism $T \in \mathcal{B}$ with topological entropy $0$ such that $T \times T$ is loosely Bernoulli. Moreover, we show that the set of such $T \in \ma…
We show that linear complexity is the threshold for the emergence of Kakutani inequivalence for measurable systems supported on a minimal subshift. In particular, we show that there are minimal subshifts of arbitrarily low super-linear complexity that admit both loosely Bernoulli and non-loosely Bernoulli ergodic measures and that no minimal subshift with linear complexity can admit inequivalent measures.
A {\it uniformly $p$-to-one endomorphism} is a measure-preserving map with entropy log $p$ which is almost everywhere $p$-to-one and for which the conditional expectation of each preimage is precisely $1/p$. The {\it standard} example of this is a one-sided $p$-shift with uniform i.i.d. Bernoulli measure. We give a characterization of those uniformly finite-to-one endomorphisms conjugate to this standard example by a condition on the past tree of names which is analogous to {\it very weakly Bernoulli} or {\it loosely Bernoulli.} As a consequence we show that a large class of isometric extensio…
We continue the study of Rokhlin entropy, an isomorphism invariant for probability-measure-preserving actions of countable groups introduced in the previous paper. We prove that every free ergodic action with finite Rokhlin entropy admits generating partitions which are almost Bernoulli, strengthening the theorem of Abért--Weiss that all free actions weakly contain Bernoulli shifts. We then use this result to study the Rokhlin entropy of Bernoulli shifts. Under the assumption that every countable group admits a free ergodic action of positive Rokhlin entropy, we prove that: (i) the Rokhlin ent…
We answer positively a question of Ryzhikov, namely we show that being a relatively weakly mixing extension is a comeager property in the Polish group of measure preserving transformations. We study some related classes of ergodic transformations and their interrelations. In the second part of the paper we show that for a fixed ergodic T with property A, a generic extension $\hat{T}$ of T also has the property A. Here A stands for each of the following properties: (i) having the same entropy as T, (ii) Bernoulli, (iii) K, and (iv) loosely Bernoulli.
We prove that if a free ergodic action of a countably infinite group has positive Rokhlin entropy (or, less generally, positive sofic entropy) then it factors onto all Bernoulli shifts of lesser or equal entropy. This extends to all countably infinite groups the well-known Sinai factor theorem from classical entropy theory.
We show that, for countable sofic groups, a Bernoulli action with infinite entropy base has infinite entropy with respect to every sofic approximation sequence. This builds on the work of Lewis Bowen in the case of finite entropy base and completes the computation of measure entropy for Bernoulli actions over countable sofic groups. One consequence is that such a Bernoulli action fails to have a generating countable partition with finite entropy if the base has infinite entropy, which in the amenable case is well known and in the case that the acting group contains the free group on two genera…
Suppose f is a $C^{1+α}$ surface diffeomorphism, and m is an equilibrium measure of a Holder continuous potential. We show that if m has positive metric entropy, then f is measure theoretically isomorphic to the product of a Bernoulli scheme and a finite rotation.
This is the first part in a series in which sofic entropy theory is generalized to class-bijective extensions of sofic groupoids. Here we define topological and measure entropy and prove invariance. We also establish the variational principle, compute the entropy of Bernoulli shift actions and answer a question of Benjy Weiss pertaining to the isomorphism problem for non-free Bernoulli shifts. The proofs are independent of previous literature.
Let $Γ$ be a sofic group with a copy of $\mathbb{Z}$ in its center. We construct an uncountable family of pairwise nonisomorphic measure-preserving $Γ$ actions with completely positive entropy, none of which is a factor of a Bernoulli shift. Our construction shows that the relation of isomorphism among completely positive entropy $Γ$ actions is not smooth, in contrast with the relation of isomorphism among Bernoulli shifts.
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group with Haar measure $μ$ and let $Γ$ be an irreducible lattice in $G$. For $g\in G$, we consider left translation $L_g$ acting on $(G\backslashΓ,μ)$. We show that if $L_g$ is $K$ (which is equivalent to positive entropy of $L_g$) then $L_g$ is a Bernoulli automorphism. As a corollary, we also obtain analogous results for homogeneous flows.
A consequence of Ornstein theory is that the infinite entropy flows associated with Poisson processes and continuous-time irreducible Markov chains on a finite number of states are isomorphic as measure-preserving systems. We give an elementary construction of such an isomorphism that has an additional finitariness property, subject to the additional conditions that the Markov chain has a uniform holding rate and a mixing skeleton.
We prove that if $G$ is a countably infinite group and $(L, λ)$ and $(K, κ)$ are probability spaces having equal Shannon entropy, then the Bernoulli shifts $G \curvearrowright (L^G, λ^G)$ and $G \curvearrowright (K^G, κ^G)$ are isomorphic. This extends Ornstein's famous isomorphism theorem to all countably infinite groups. Our proof builds on a slightly weaker theorem by Lewis Bowen in 2011 that required both $λ$ and $κ$ have at least $3$ points in their support. We furthermore produce finitary isomorphisms in the case where both $L$ and $K$ are finite.
Let $β\in(1,2)$ be a Pisot number and let $H_β$ denote Garsia's entropy for the Bernoulli convolution associated with $β$. Garsia, in 1963 showed that $H_β<1$ for any Pisot $β$. For the Pisot numbers which satisfy $x^m=x^{m-1}+x^{m-2}+...+x+1$ (with $m\ge2$) Garsia's entropy has been evaluated with high precision by Alexander and Zagier and later improved by Grabner, Kirschenhofer and Tichy, and it proves to be close to 1. No other numerical values for $H_β$ are known. In the present paper we show that $H_β>0.81$ for all Pisot $β$, and improve this lower bound for certain ranges of $β$. Our me…
If $(M,g)$ is a smooth compact rank $1$ Riemannian manifold without focal points, it is shown that the measure $μ_{\max}$ of maximal entropy for the geodesic flow is unique. In this article, we study the statistic properties and prove that this unique measure $μ_{\max}$ is mixing. Stronger conclusion that the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle $SM$ with respect to $μ_{\max}$ is Bernoulli is acquired provided $M$ is a compact surface with genus greater than one and no focal points.
We give an expression for the Garsia entropy of Bernoulli convolutions in terms of products of matrices. This gives an explicit rate of convergence of the Garsia entropy and shows that one can calculate the Hausdorff dimension of the Bernoulli convolution $ν_β$ to arbitrary given accuracy whenever $β$ is algebraic. In particular, if the Garsia entropy $H(β)$ is not equal to $\log(β)$ then we have a finite time algorithm to determine whether or not $\mathrm{dim}_\mathrm{H} (ν_β)=1$.
We study the Bernoulli property for a class of partially hyperbolic systems arising from skew products. More precisely, we consider a hyperbolic map $(T,M,μ)$, where $μ$ is a Gibbs measure, an aperiodic Hölder continuous cocycle $ϕ:M\to \mathbb R$ with zero mean and a zero-entropy flow $(K_t,N,ν)$. We then study the skew product $$ T_ϕ(x,y)=(Tx,K_{ϕ(x)}y), $$ acting on $(M\times N,μ\times ν)$. We show that if $(K_t)$ is of slow growth and has good equidistribution properties, then $T_ϕ$ remains Bernoulli. In particular, our main result applies to $(K_t)$ being a typical translation flow on a s…
In this paper we show that any ergodic measure preserving transformation of a standard probability space which is AT$(n)$ for some positive integer $n$ has zero entropy. We show that for every positive integer $n$ any Bernoulli shift is not AT($n$). We also give an example of a transformation which has zero entropy but does not have property AT($n$), for any integer $n\geq 1$.
Probabilistic models of random walks in random sceneries give rise to examples of probability-preserving dynamical systems. A point in the state spaces consists of a walk-trajectory and a scenery, and its `motion' corresponds to shifting the time-origin. These models were proposed as natural examples of non-Bernoulli K-automorphisms by Adler, Ornstein and Weiss. This was proved in a famous analysis by Kalikow using Ornstein's Very Weak Bernoulli characterization of Bernoulli processes. Since then, various authors have generalized this construction to give other examples, including some smooth …
We study the notion of the scaled entropy of a filtration of $σ$-fields (= decreasing sequence of $σ$-fields) introduced by the first author ({V4}). We suggest a method for computing this entropy for the sequence of $σ$-fields of pasts of a Markov process determined by a random walk over the trajectories of a Bernoulli action of a commutative or nilpotent countable group (Theorems~5,~6). Since the scaled entropy is a metric invariant of the filtration, it follows that the sequences of $σ$-fields of pasts of random walks over the trajectories of Bernoulli actions of lattices (groups ${\Bbb Z}^d…
Dan Rudolph showed that for an amenable group $Γ$, the generic measure-preserving action of $Γ$ on a Lebesgue space has zero entropy. Here this is extended to nonamenable groups. In fact, the proof shows that every action is a factor of a zero entropy action! This uses the strange phenomena that in the presence of nonamenability, entropy can increase under a factor map. The proof uses Seward's recent generalization of Sinai's Factor Theorem, the Gaboriau-Lyons result and my theorem that for every nonabelian free group, all Bernoulli shifts factor onto each other.
We show that expanding toral endomorphisms, together with their respective Lebesgue measure are isomorphic to 1-sided Bernoulli shifts. This result is then extended to smooth perturbations of expanding toral endomorphisms, together with their respective measures of maximal entropy. Also we study group extensions of expanding toral endomorphisms and show that under certain, not too restrictive conditions on the extension cocycle, these skew products are 1-sided Bernoulli as well.
We obtain the following dichotomy for accessible partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of 3-dimensional manifolds having compact center leaves: either there is a unique entropy maximizing measure, this measure has the Bernoulli property and its center Lyapunov exponent is 0 or, there is a finite number of entropy maximizing measures, all of them with nonzero center Lyapunov exponent (at least one with negative exponent and one with positive exponent), that are finite extensions of a Bernoulli system. In the first case of the dichotomy we obtain that the system is topologically conjugated to a r…
We consider the unique measure of maximal entropy for proper 3-colorings of $\mathbb{Z}^2$, or equivalently, the so-called zero-slope Gibbs measure. Our main result is that this measure is Bernoulli, or equivalently, that it can be expressed as the image of a translation-equivariant function of independent and identically distributed random variables placed on $\mathbb{Z}^2$. Along the way, we obtain various estimates on the mixing properties of this measure.
Through this paper we analyze the ergodic properties of continuous time Markov chains with values on the one-dimensional spin lattice 1,...,d}^N (also known as the Bernoulli space). Initially, we consider as the infinitesimal generator the operator $L={\mc L}_A -I$, where \mc L_A is a discrete time Ruelle operator (transfer operator), and A:{1,...,d}^N \to R is a given fixed Lipschitz function. The associated continuous time stationary Markov chain will define the\emph{a priori}probability. Given a Lipschitz interaction V:\{1,...,d\}^{\bb N}\to \mathbb{R}, we are interested in Gibbs (equilibri…
Sofic groups were defined implicitly by Gromov in [Gr99] and explicitly by Weiss in [We00]. All residually finite groups (and hence every linear group) is sofic. The purpose of this paper is to introduce, for every countable sofic group $G$, a family of measure-conjugacy invariants for measure-preserving $G$-actions on probability spaces. These invariants generalize Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy for actions of amenable groups. They are computed exactly for Bernoulli shifts over $G$, leading to a complete classification of Bernoulli systems up to measure-conjugacy for many groups including all count…
In this paper we prove that for sufficiently large parameters the standard map has a unique measure of maximal entropy (m.m.e.). Moreover, we prove: the m.m.e. is Bernoulli, and the periodic points with Lyapunov exponents bounded away from zero equidistribute with respect to the m.m.e. We prove some estimates regarding the Hausdorff dimension of the m.m.e. and about the density of the support of the measure on the manifold. For a generic large parameter, we prove that the support of the m.m.e. has Hausdorff dimension $2$. We also obtain the $C^2$-robustness of several of these properties.
Ultrametric concepts are applied to the Bernoulli map, showing the adequateness of the non-Archimedean metrics to describe in a simple and direct way the chaotic properties of this map. Lyapunov exponent and Kolmogorov entropy appear to find a simpler explanation. A p-adic time emerges as a natural consequence of the ultrametric properties of the map.
We give a generator-free formulation of sofic measure entropy using finite partitions and establish a Kolmogorov-Sinai theorem. We also show how to compute the values for general Bernoulli actions in a concise way using the arguments of Bowen in the finite base case.
Sinai proved that a nonatomic ergodic measure-preserving system has any Bernoulli shift of no greater entropy as a factor. Given a Bernoulli shift, we show that any other Bernoulli shift that is of strictly less entropy and is stochastically dominated by the original measure can be obtained as a monotone factor; that is, the factor map has the property that for each point in the domain, its image under the factor map is coordinatewise smaller than or equal to the original point.
Let $β\in(1,2)$ and let $H_β$ denote Garsia's entropy for the Bernoulli convolution $μ_β$ associated with $β$. In the present paper we show that $H_β>0.82$ for all $β\in (1, 2)$ and improve this bound for certain ranges. Combined with recent results by Hochman and Breuillard-Varjú, this yields $\dim (μ_β)\ge0.82$ for all $β\in(1,2)$. In addition, we show that if an algebraic $β$ is such that $[\mathbb{Q}(β): \mathbb{Q}(β^k)] = k$ for some $k \geq 2$, then $\dim(μ_β)=1$. Such is, for instance, any root of a Pisot number which is not a Pisot number itself.
Let $\{T^t\}$ be a smooth flow with positive speed and positive topological entropy on a compact smooth three dimensional manifold, and let $μ$ be an ergodic measure of maximal entropy. We show that either $\{T^t\}$ is Bernoulli, or $\{T^t\}$ is isomorphic to the product of a Bernoulli flow and a rotational flow. Applications are given to Reeb flows.
We prove a max-min theorem for weak containment in the context of algebraic actions. Namely, we show that given an algebraic action of $G$ on $X,$ there is a maximal, closed $G$-invariant subgroup $Y$ of $X$ so that the action of $G$ on $Y$ is weakly contained in a Bernoulli shift. This subgroup is also the minimal subgroup so that any action weakly contained in a Bernoulli shift is $G\curvearrowright X/Y$-ergodic "in the presence of $G\curvearrowright X$". We give several applications, including a major simplification of the proof that measure entropy equals topological entropy for principal …
We prove the explicit formula for sofic and Rokhlin entropy of actions arising from some class of Gibbs measures. It provides a new set of examples with sofic entropy independent of sofic approximations. It is particularilly interresting, since in non-amenable case Rokhlin entropy was computed only in case of Bernoulli actions and for some examples with zero Rokhlin entropy. As an example we show that our formula holds for the supercritical Ising model. We also establish a criterion for uniqueness of Gibbs measure by means of f-invariant.
In 1987, Ornstein and Weiss discovered that the Bernoulli $2$-shift over the rank two free group factors onto the seemingly larger Bernoulli $4$-shift. With the recent creation of an entropy theory for actions of sofic groups (in particular free groups), their example shows the surprising fact that entropy can increase under factor maps. In order to better understand this phenomenon, we study a natural generalization of the Ornstein--Weiss map for countable groups. We relate the increase in entropy to the cost and to the first $\ell^2$-Betti number of the group. More generally, we study coboun…
For any fixed alphabet A, the maximum topological entropy of a Z^d subshift with alphabet A is obviously log |A|. We study the class of nearest neighbor Z^d shifts of finite type which have topological entropy very close to this maximum, and show that they have many useful properties. Specifically, we prove that for any d, there exists beta_d such that for any nearest neighbor Z^d shift of finite type X with alphabet A for which log |A| - h(X) < beta_d, X has a unique measure of maximal entropy. Our values of beta_d decay polynomially (like O(d^(-17))), and we prove that the sequence must deca…
The squarefree flow is a natural dynamical system whose topological and ergodic properties are closely linked to the behavior of squarefree numbers. We prove that the squarefree flow carries a unique measure of maximal entropy and express this measure explicitly in terms of a skew-product of a Kronecker and a Bernoulli system. Using this characterization and a number-theoretic argument, we then show that the unique maximum entropy measure fails to possess the Gibbs property.
In this work, we study the problem of finding the asymptotic growth rate of the number of of $d$-dimensional arrays with side length $n$ over a given alphabet which avoid a list of one-dimensional "forbidden" words along all cardinal directions, as both $n$ and $d$ tend to infinity. Louidor, Marcus, and the second author called this quantity the "limiting entropy"; it is the limit of a sequence of topological entropies of a sequence of isotropic $\mathbb{Z}^d$ subshifts with the dimension $d$ tending to infinity. We find an expression for this limiting entropy which involves only one-dimension…
We consider an abundant class of non-uniformly hyperbolic $C^2$-Hénon like diffeomorphisms called strongly regular and which corresponds to Benedicks-Carleson parameters. We prove the existence of $m>0$ such that for any such diffeomorphism $f$, every invariant probability measure of $f$ has a Lyapunov exponent greater than $m$, answering a question of L. Carleson. Moreover, we show the existence and uniqueness of a measure of maximal entropy, this answers a question of M. Lyubich and Y. Pesin. We also prove that the maximal entropy measure is equi-distributed on the periodic points and is fin…
Recent mathematical investigations have shown that under very general conditions exponential mixing implies the Bernoulli property. As a concrete example of a statistical mechanics which is exponentially mixing we consider a Bernoulli shift dynamics by Chebyshev maps of arbitrary order $N\geq 2$, which maximizes Tsallis $q=3$ entropy rather than the ordinary $q=1$ Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy. Such an information shift dynamics may be relevant in a pre-universe before ordinary space-time is created. We discuss symmetry properties of the coupled Chebyshev systems, which are different for even and od…
Let $f$ be an holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb{P}^k$ and $μ$ be its measure of maximal entropy. We prove an Almost Sure Invariance Principle for the systems $(\mathbb{P}^k,f,μ)$. Our class $\cal{U}$ of observables includes the Hölder functions and unbounded ones which present analytic singularities. The proof is based on a geometric construction of a Bernoulli coding map $ω: (Σ, s, ν) \to (\mathbb{P}^k,f,μ)$. We obtain the invariance principle for an observable $ψ$ on $(\mathbb{P}^k,f,μ)$ by applying Philipp-Stout's theorem for $χ= ψ\circ ω$ on $(Σ, s, ν)$. The invariance principle implies…

We prove that a self similar measure is absolutely continuous providing that it satisfies a condition depending on its Garsia entropy, contraction ratio, and the separation between different points in approximations of the self similar measure. In the special case of Bernoulli convolutions this paper gives a sufficient condition for the Bernoulli convolution with parameter lambda to be absolutely continuous in terms of lambda and its Mahler measure.
The $f$-invariant is an isomorphism invariant of free-group measure-preserving actions introduced by Lewis Bowen in [arXiv:0802.4294], where it was used to show that two finite-entropy Bernoulli shifts over a finitely generated free group can be isomorphic only if their base measures have the same Shannon entropy. In [arXiv:0902.0174] Bowen showed that the $f$-invariant is a variant of sofic entropy; in particular it is the exponential growth rate of the expected number of good models over a uniform random homomorphism. In this paper we present an analogous formula for the relative $f$-invaria…
We say that two free probability-measure-preserving actions of countable groups are Shannon orbit equivalent if there is an orbit equivalence between them whose associated cocycle partitions have finite Shannon entropy. We show that if the acting groups are sofic and each has a w-normal amenable subgroup which is neither locally finite nor virtually cyclic then Shannon orbit equivalence implies that the actions have the same maximum sofic entropy. This extends a result of Austin beyond the finitely generated amenable setting and has the consequence that two Bernoulli actions of a group with th…
