Let $q$ be an even prime power and $m\geq2$ an integer. By $\mathbb{F}_q$, we denote the finite field of order $q$ and by $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ its extension degree $m$. In this paper we investigate the existence of a primitive normal pair $(α, \, f(α))$, with $f(x)= \dfrac{ax^2+bx+c}{dx+e} \in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}(x)$, where the rank of the matrix
$F= \begin{pmatrix}a \, &b\, & c\\ 0\, &d \, &e \end{pmatrix}$ $\in M_{2 \times 3}(\Fm) $ is 2. Namely, we establish sufficient conditions to show that nearly all fields of even characteristic possess such elements, except for $\begin{pmatrix} 1 \, &1 \, & 0\\ 0\, &1 \, &0 \end{pmatrix}$ if $q=2$ and $m$ is odd, and then we provide an explicit list of possible and genuine exceptional pairs $(q,m)$.
Let $\mathcal A$ be a star-shaped polygon in the plane, with rational vertices, containing the origin. The number of primitive lattice points in the dilate $t\mathcal A$ is asymptotically $\frac6{π^2}$ Area$(t\mathcal A)$ as $t\to \infty$. We show that the error term is both $Ω_\pm\big( t\sqrt{\log\log t} \big)$ and $O(t(\log t)^{2/3}(\log\log t)^{4/3})$. Both bounds extend (to the above class of polygons) known results for the isosceles right triangle, which appear in the literature as bounds for the error term in the summatory function for Euler's $ϕ(n)$.
In recent work by Einsiedler, Mozes, Shah and Shapira the limiting distributions of primitive rational points on expanding horospheres was examined in arbitrary dimension, and a suspended version of this result was announced. Motivated by this, we prove an analog to the announcement for primitive rational points in Hilbert modular surfaces via effective mixing.
We determine the rational integers x,y,z such that x^3+y^9=z^2 and gcd(x,y,z)=1. First we determine a finite set of curves of genus 10 such that any primitive solution to x^3+y^9=z^2 corresponds to a rational point on one of those curves. We observe that each of these genus 10 curves covers an elliptic curve over some extension of Q. We use this cover to apply a Chabauty-like method to an embedding of the curve in the Weil restriction of the elliptic curve. This enables us to find all rational points and therefore deduce the primitive solutions to the original equation.
We prove effective equidistribution of primitive rational points and of primitive rational points defined by monomials along long horocycle orbits in products of the torus and the modular surface. This answers a question posed in joint work by the first and the last named author with Shahar Mozes and Uri Shapira. Under certain congruence conditions we prove the joint equidistribution of conjugate rational points in the two-torus and the modular surface.
Given a prime power $q$ and an integer $n\geq2$, we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of a primitive pair $(α,f(α))$ where $α\in \mathbb{F}_q$ and $f(x) \in \mathbb{F}_q(x)$ is a rational function of degree $n$. (Here $f=f_1/f_2$, where $f_1, f_2$ are coprime polynomials of degree $n_1,n_2$, respectively, and $n_1+n_2=n$.) For any $n$, such a pair is guaranteed to exist for sufficiently large $q$. Indeed, when $n=2$, such a pair definitely does {\em not} exist only for 28 values of $q$ and possibly (but unlikely) only for at most $3911$ other values of $q$.
In this paper, we consider rational functions $f$ with some minor restrictions over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^n},$ where $q=p^k$ for some prime $p$ and positive integer $k$. We establish a sufficient condition for the existence of a pair $(α,f(α))$ of primitive normal elements in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}.$ Moreover, for $q=2^k$ and rational functions $f$ with quadratic numerators and denominators, we explicitly find that there are at most $55$ finite fields $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ in which such a pair $(α,f(α))$ of primitive normal elements may not exist.
We count flags of primitive lattices, which are objects of the form ${0}=Λ^{(0)}<Λ^{(1)}< \cdots <Λ^{(\ell)}= \mathbb{Z}^n$, where every $Λ^{(i)}$ is a primitive lattice in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. The counting is with respect to two different natural height functions, allowing us to give a new proof of the Manin conjecture for flag varieties over rational numbers. We deduce the equidistribution of rational points in flag varieties, as well as the equidistribution of the shapes of the successive quotient lattices, $Λ^{(i)}/Λ^{(i-1)}$. In doing so, we generalize previous work of Schmidt, as well as our …
The celebrated Primitive Normal Basis Theorem states that for any $n\ge 2$ and any finite field $\mathbb F_q$, there exists an element $α\in \mathbb F_{q^n}$ that is simultaneously primitive and normal over $\mathbb F_q$. In this paper, we prove some variations of this result, completing the proof of a conjecture proposed by Anderson and Mullen (2014). Our results also imply the existence of elements of $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ with multiplicative order $(q^n-1)/2$ and prescribed trace over $\mathbb F_q$.
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of characteristic $p$ with $q$ elements and $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ its extension of degree $n$. We prove that there exists a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ that produces a completely normal basis of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, provided that $n=p^{\ell}m$ with $(m,p)=1$ and $q>m$.
Given a $p$-adic field $K$ and a nilpotent uniform pro-$p$ group $G$, we prove that all primitive ideals in the $K$-rational Iwasawa algebra $KG$ are maximal, and can be reduced to a particular standard form. Setting $\mathcal{L}$ as the associated $\mathbb{Z}_p$-Lie algebra of $G$, our approach is to study the action of $KG$ on a Dixmier module $\widehat{D(λ)}$ over the affinoid envelope $\widehat{U(\mathcal{L})}_K$, and to prove that all primitive ideals can be reduced to annihilators of modules of this form.
An element w of the extension E of degree n over the finite field F=GF(q) is called free over F if {w, w^q,...,w^{q^{n-1}}} is a (normal) basis of E/F. The Primitive Normal Basis Theorem, first established in full by Lenstra and Schoof (1987), asserts that for any such extension E/F, there exists an element w in E such that w is simultaneously primitive (i.e., generates the multiplicative group of E) and free over F. In this paper we prove the following strengthening of this theorem: aside from five specific extensions E/F, there exists an element w in E such that both w and w^{-1} are simulta…
Let $q$ be a prime power of a prime $p$, $n$ a positive integer and $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ the finite field with $q^n$ elements. The $k-$normal elements over finite fields were introduced and characterized by Huczynska et al (2013). Under the condition that $n$ is not divisible by $p$, they obtained an existence result on primitive $1-$normal elements of $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb F_q$ for $q>2$. In this note, we extend their result to the excluded case $q=2$.
We prove an effective version of a result due to Einsiedler, Mozes, Shah and Shapira who established the equidistribution of primitive rational points on expanding horospheres in the space of unimodular lattices in at least $3$ dimensions. Their proof uses techniques from homogeneous dynamics and relies in particular on measure-classification theorems -- an approach which does not lend itself to effective bounds. We implement a strategy based on spectral theory, Fourier analysis and Weil's bound for Kloosterman sums in order to quantify the rate of equidistribution for a specific horospherical…
For $q=3^r$ ($r>0$), denote by $\mathbb{F}_q$ the finite field of order $q$ and for a positive integer $m\geq2$, let $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ be its extension field of degree $m$. We establish a sufficient condition for existence of a primitive normal element $α$ such that $f(α)$ is a primitive element, where $f(x)= ax^2+bx+c$, with $a,b,c\in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ satisfying $b^2\neq ac$ in $\Fm$ except for at most 9 exceptional pairs $(q,m)$.
An element $α\in \mathbb F_{q^n}$ is \emph{normal} if $\mathcal{B} = \{α, α^q, \ldots, α^{q^{n-1}}\}$ forms a basis of $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ as a vector space over $\mathbb F_{q}$; in this case, $\mathcal{B}$ is a normal basis of $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb F_{q}$. The notion of $k$-normal elements was introduced in Huczynska et al (2013). Using the same notation as before, $α$ is $k$-normal if $\mathcal{B}$ spans a co-dimension $k$ subspace of $\mathbb F_{q^n}$. It can be shown that $1$-normal elements always exist in $\mathbb F_{q^n}$, and Huczynska et al (2013) show that elements that are s…
In 2013, Huczynska, Mullen, Panario and Thomson introduced the concept of $k$-normal elements: an element $α\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ is $k$-normal over $\mathbb{F}_q$ if the greatest common divisor of the polynomials $g_α(x)= αx^{n-1}+α^qx^{n-2}+\ldots +α^{q^{n-2}}x+α^{q^{n-1}}$ and $x^n-1$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}[x]$ has degree $k$, generalizing the concept of normal elements (normal in the usual sense is $0$-normal). In this paper we discuss the existence of $r$-primitive, $k$-normal elements in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, where an element $α\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}^*$ is $r$-primitive i…
Let $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ be a finite field with $q^n$ elements, and let $m_1$ and $m_2$ be positive integers. Given polynomials $f_1(x), f_2(x) \in \mathbb{F}_q[x]$ with $\textrm{deg}(f_i(x)) \leq m_i$, for $i = 1, 2$, and such that the rational function $f_1(x)/f_2(x)$ belongs to a certain set which we define, we present a sufficient condition for the existence of a primitive element $α\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, normal over $\mathbb{F}_q$, such that $f_1(α)/f_2(α)$ is also primitive.
Given an integer $t\ge 1$, a rational number $g$ and a prime $p\equiv 1({\rm mod} t)$ we say that $g$ is a near-primitive root of index $t$ if $ν_p(g)=0$, and $g$ is of order $(p-1)/t$ modulo $p$. In the case $g$ is not minus a square we compute the density, under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), of such primes explicitly in the form $ρ(g)A$, with $ρ(g)$ a rational number and $A$ the Artin constant. We follow in this the approach of Wagstaff, who had dealt earlier with the case where $g$ is not minus a square. The outcome is in complete agreement with the recent determination of the d…
The so called $k$-normal elements appear in the literature as a generalization of normal elements over finite fields. Recently, questions concerning the construction of $k$-normal elements and the existence of $k$-normal elements that are also primitive have attracted attention from many authors. In this paper we give alternative constructions of $k$-normal elements and, in particular, we obtain a sieve inequality for the existence of primitive, $k$-normal elements. As an application, we show the existence of primitive $k$-normal elements for a significant proportion of $k$'s in many field ext…
Given $m, n, q\in \mathbb{N}$ such that $q$ is a prime power and $m\geq 3$, $a\in \mathbb{F}_q$, we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of primitive pair $(α, f(α))$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ such that $α$ is normal over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $\text{Tr}_{\mathbb{F}_{q^m}/\mathbb{F}_q}(α^{-1})=a$, where $f(x)\in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}(x)$ is a rational function of degree sum $n$. Further, when $n=2$ and $q=5^k$ for some $k\in \mathbb{N}$, such a pair definitely exists for all $(q, m)$ apart from at most $20$ choices.
Let $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ be a finite field with $q^n$ elements and $r$ be a positive divisor of $q^n-1$. An element $α\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}^*$ is called $r$-primitive if its multiplicative order is $(q^n-1)/r$. Also, $α\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ is $k$-normal over $\mathbb{F}_q$ if the greatest common divisor of the polynomials $g_α(x) = αx^{n-1}+ α^q x^{n-2} + \ldots + α^{q^{n-2}}x + α^{q^{n-1}}$ and $x^n-1$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}[x]$ has degree $k$. These concepts generalize the ideas of primitive and normal elements, respectively. In this paper, we consider non-negative integers $m_1,m_2,k_1,k_2$, po…
The previous paper [4] proved the existence of primitive polynomials and primitive normal polynomials of degree n with k prescribed coefficients in the finite field GF(q) for all sufficiently large q. This paper presents a loger versions of the result on primitve normal polynomials.
We present computational results which strongly support a conjecture of Morgan and Mullen (1996), which states that for every extension $E/F$ of Galois fields there exists a primitive element of $E$ which is completely normal over $F$.
An element $α\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ is normal over $\mathbb{F}_q$ if $\mathcal{B}=\{α, α^q, α^{q^2}, \cdots, α^{q^{n-1}}\}$ forms a basis of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ as a vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$. It is well known that $α\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ is normal over $\mathbb{F}_q$ if and only if $g_α(x)=αx^{n-1}+α^q x^{n-2}+ \cdots + α^{q^{n-2}}x+α^{q^{n-1}}$ and $x^n-1$ are relatively prime over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, that is, the degree of their greatest common divisor in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}[x]$ is $0$. Using this equivalence, the notion of $k$-normal elements was introduced in Huczynska et al. ($2013$):…
This paper is continuation of the paper "Primitive roots in quadratic field". We consider an analogue of Artin's primitive root conjecture for algebraic numbers which is not a unit in real quadratic fields. Given such an algebraic number, for a rational prime $p$ which is inert in the field the maximal order of the unit modulo $p$ is $p^2-1$. An extension of Artin's conjecture is that there are infinitely many such inert primes for which this order is maximal. we show that for any choice of 85 algebraic numbers satisfying a certain simple restriction, there is at least one of the algebraic num…
This article addresses the existence of $\Q$-rational periodic points for morphisms of projective space. In particular, we construct an infinitely family of morphisms on $¶^N$ where each component is a degree 2 homogeneous form in $N+1$ variables which has a $\Q$-periodic point of primitive period $\frac{(N+1)(N+2)}{2} + \lfloor \frac{N-1}{2}\rfloor$. This result is then used to show that for $N$ large enough there exists morphisms of $¶^N$ with $\Q$-rational periodic points with primitive period larger that $c(k)N^k$ for any $k$ and some constant $c(k)$.
A primitive completely normal element for an extension $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of Galois fields is a generator of the multiplicative group of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, which simultaneously is normal over every intermediate field of that extension. We are going to prove that such a generator exists when $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ is an 'exceptional' regular extension. In combination with [6] our investigations altogether settle the existence of primitive completely normal bases for any regular extension. An important feature of the class of regular extensions is that they comprise ev…
We find the primitive integer solutions to x^2+y^3=z^7. A nonabelian descent argument involving the simple group of order 168 reduces the problem to the determination of the set of rational points on a finite set of twists of the Klein quartic curve X. To restrict the set of relevant twists, we exploit the isomorphism between X and the modular curve X(7), and use modularity of elliptic curves and level lowering. This leaves 10 genus-3 curves, whose rational points are found by a combination of methods.
Given a number field $L$, we define the degree of an algebraic number $v \in L$ with respect to a choice of a primitive element of $L$. We propose the question of computing the minimal degrees of algebraic numbers in $L$, and examine these values in degree $4$ Galois extensions over $\mathbb{Q}$ and triquadratic number fields. We show that computing minimal degrees of non-rational elements in triquadratic number fields is closely related to solving classical Diophantine problems such as congruent number problem as well as understanding various arithmetic properties of elliptic curves.
We consider an analogue of Artin's primitive root conjecture for units in real quadratic fields. Given such a nontrivial unit, for a rational prime p which is inert in the field the maximal order of the unit modulo p is p+1. An extension of Artin's conjecture is that there are infinitely many such inert primes for which this order is maximal. This is known at present only under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Unconditionally, we show that for any choice of 7 units in different real quadratic fields satisfying a certain simple restriction, there is at least one of the units which satisfies …
The algebras considered in this paper are commutative rings of which the additive group is a finite-dimensional vector space over the field of rational numbers. We present deterministic polynomial-time algorithms that, given such an algebra, determine its nilradical, all of its prime ideals, as well as the corresponding localizations and residue class fields, its largest separable subalgebra, and its primitive idempotents. We also solve the discrete logarithm problem in the multiplicative group of the algebra. While deterministic polynomial-time algorithms were known earlier, our approach is d…
We present all Belyi maps P^1(C) -> P^1(C) having almost simple primitive monodromy groups (not isomorphic to A_n or S_n) containing rigid and rational generating triples of degree between 50 and 250. This also leads to new polynomials having almost simple Galois groups over Q(t).
Let g be a non-zero rational number. Let N_{g,t}(x) denote the number of primes p<=x for which the subgroup of the multiplicative group of the finite field having p elements that is generated by g mod p is of residual index t. In Part I, which is published in J. Number Theory 83 (2000), 155-181, a heuristic for N_{g,t}(x) was set up, under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), and shown to be asymptotically exact. In this preprint we provide an alternative and rather shorter proof of this result.
Let K be a number field, let f(x) in K(x) be a rational function of degree d> 1, and let z in K be a wandering point such that f^n(z) is nonzero for all n > 0. We prove that if the abc-conjecture holds for K, then for all but finitely many positive integers n, there is a prime p of K such that p | f^n(z) and p does not divide f^m(z) for all positive integers m < n. We prove the same result unconditionally for function fields of characteristic 0 when f is not isotrivial.
Let $r$, $n$ be positive integers, $k$ be a non-negative integer and $q$ be any prime power such that $r\mid q^n-1.$ An element $α$ of the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ is called an {\it $r$-primitive} element, if its multiplicative order is $(q^n-1)/r$, and it is called a {\it $k$-normal} element over $\mathbb{F}_q$, if the greatest common divisor of the polynomials $m_α(x)=\sum_{i=1}^{n} α^{q^{i-1}}x^{n-i}$ and $x^n-1$ is of degree $k.$ In this article, we define the characteristic function for the set of $k$-normal elements, and with the help of this, we establish a sufficient condition f…
Let F(z) be a rational function in Q(z) of degree at least 2 with F(0) = 0 and such that F does not vanish to order d at 0. Let b be a rational number having infinite orbit under iteration of F, and write F^n(b) = A_n/B_n as a fraction in lowest terms. We prove that for all but finitely many n > 0, the numerator A_n has a primitive divisor, i.e., there is a prime p such that p divides A_n and p does not divide A_i for all i < n. More generally, we prove an analogous result when F is defined over a number field and 0 is a periodic point for F.
We show that the count of rational points by de la Bretèche, Browning and Salberger on the Cayley ruled cubic surface extends to all non-normal integral hypercubics which are not cones.
This article examines dynamical systems on a class of K3 surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{2} \times \mathbb{P}^{2}$ with an infinite automorphism group. In particular, this article develops an algorithm to find $\mathbb{Q}$-rational periodic points using information modulo $p$ for various primes $p$. The algorithm is applied to exhibit K3 surfaces with $\mathbb{Q}$-rational periodic points of primitive period $1,...,16$. A portion of the algorithm is then used to determine the Riemann zeta function modulo 3 of a particular K3 surface and find a family of K3 surfaces with Picard number two.
We prove the finiteness of the Zsigmondy set associated to the critical orbit of f(z) = z^d+c for rational values of c by finding an effective bound on the size of the set. For non-recurrent critical orbits, the Zsigmondy set is explicitly computed by utilizing effective dynamical height bounds. In the general case, we use Thue-style Diophantine approximation methods to bound the size of the Zsigmondy set when d >2, and complex-analytic methods when d=2.
We consider the algorithmic problem of computing a primitive idempotent of a central simple algebra over the field of rational functions over a finite field. The algebra is given by a set of structure constants. The problem is reduced to the computation of a division algebra Brauer equivalent to the central simple algebra. This division algebra is constructed as a cyclic algebra, once the Hasse invariants have been computed. We give an application to skew constacyclic convolutional codes.
We introduce the property of convex normality of rational polytopes and give a dimensionally uniform lower bound for the edge lattice lengths, guaranteeing the property. As an application, we show that if every edge of a lattice d-polytope P has lattice length at least 4d(d+1) then P is normal. This answers in the positive a question raised in 2007. If P is a lattice simplex whose edges have lattice lengths at least d(d+1) then P is even covered by lattice parallelepipeds. For the approach developed here, it is necessary to involve rational polytopes even for applications to lattice polytopes.
We give a complete list of rational functions $A$ such that the genus $g$ of the Galois closure of $\mathbb C(z)/\mathbb C(A)$ equals zero. We also provide a geometric description of $A$ for which $g=1.$
