We investigate the tunneling of pseudospin-1 and pseudospin-3/2 quasiparticles through a barrier consisting of both electrostatic and vector potentials, existing uniformly in a finite region along the transmission axis. First, we find the tunneling coefficients, conductivities, and Fano factors in the absence of the vector potential. Then we repeat the calculations by switching on the relevant magnetic fields. The features show clear distinctions, which can be used to identify the type of semimetals, although both of them exhibit linear band-crossing points.
Multi-band touchings such as 3-band, 6-band and 8-band touchings together with the emergence of high pseudospin fermions were predicted recently at high-symmetry points in three-dimensional space. In this paper, we propose a simple cubic model whose unit cell contains three atoms. There are 6 bands in the system due to the spin degrees of freedom. The 4-band and 2-band touchings are realized at high-symmetry points, where we derive low-energy theories, demonstrating the emergence of pseudospin-3/2 fermions and Weyl fermions, respectively. Away from the high-symmetry points, we find critical We…
The Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shift is the transverse shift of a beam at a surface or an interface. It is a manifestation of the three-component Berry curvature in three dimensions, and has been studied in optical systems and Weyl semimetals. Here we investigate the IF shift in two types of topological systems, topological semimetals with pseudospin-$N/2$ for an arbitrary integer $N$, and nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs). For the former, we find the IF shift depends on the components of the pseudospin, with the sign depending on the chirality. We term this phenomenon the pseudospin Hall effect of topol…
In this work, pumped currents of the adiabatically-driven double-barrier structure based on the pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl fermions are studied. As a result of the three-band dispersion and hence the unique properties of pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl quasiparticles, sharp current-direction reversal is found at certain parameter settings especially at the Dirac point of the band structure, where apexes of the two cones touches at the flat band. Such a behavior can be interpreted consistently by the Berry phase of the scattering matrix and the classical turnstile mechanism.
We address the problem of barrier tunneling in the two-dimensional T_3 lattice (dice lattice). In particular we focus on the low-energy, long-wavelength approximation for the Hamiltonian of the system, where the lattice can be described by a Dirac-like Hamiltonian associated with a pseudospin one. The enlarged pseudospin S = 1 (instead of S = 1/2 as for graphene) leads to an enhanced "super" Klein tunneling through rectangular electrostatic barriers. Our results are confirmed via numerical investigation of the tight-binding model of the lattice. For a uniform magnetic field, we discuss the Lan…
Multi-band touchings together with the emergence of fermions exhibiting linear dispersions have recently been predicted and realized in various materials. We first investigate the Adler-Bell-Jackiw chiral anomaly in these multi-band touching semimetals when they are described by the pseudospin operator in high dimensional representation. By evaluating the Chern number, we show that the anomalous Hall effect is enhanced depending on the magnitude of the pseudospin. It is also confirmed by the analysis of the Landau levels when magnetic field is applied. Namely, charge pumping occurs from one mu…
We study the effective symmetry profiles of superconducting pair correlations and the flow of charge supercurrent in ballistic Weyl semimetal systems with a tilted dispersion relation. Utilizing a microscopic method in the ballistic regime and starting from both opposite-pseudospin and equal-pseudospin phonon-mediated opposite-spin electron-electron couplings, we calculate the anomalous Green's function to study various superconducting pair correlations that Weyl semimetal systems may develop. The momentum-space profile reveals that by properly manipulating the parameters of Weyl semimetal sys…
We investigate the tunneling of the quasiparticles arising in multi-Weyl semimetals through a barrier consisting of both electrostatic and vector potentials, existing uniformly in a finite region along the transmission axis. The dispersion of a multi-Weyl semimetal is linear in one direction (say, $k_z$), and proportional to $k_\perp^J$ in the plane perpendicular to it (where $k_\perp =\sqrt{k_x^2+k_y^2}$). Hence, we study the cases when the barrier is perpendicular to $k_z$ and $k_x$, respectively. For comparison, we also state the corresponding results for the Weyl semimetal.
Graphene electrons feature a pair of massless Dirac cones of opposite pseudospin chirality at two valleys. Klein tunneling refers to the intriguing capability of these chiral electrons to penetrate through high and wide potential barrier. The two valleys have been treated independently in the literature, where time reversal symmetry dictates that neither the normal incidence transmission nor the angle-averaged one can have any valley polarization. Here we show that, when intervalley scattering by barrier is accounted, graphene electrons normally incident at a superlattice barrier can experienc…
We investigate single-particle ballistic scattering on a rectangular barrier in the nodal-line Weyl semimetals. Since the system under study has a crystallographic anisotropy, the scattering properties are dependent on mutual orientation of the crystalline axis and the barrier. To account for the anisotropy, we examine two different barrier orientations. It is demonstrated that, for certain angles of incidence, the incoming particle passes through the barrier with probability of unity. This is a manifestation of the Klein tunneling, a familiar phenomenon in the context of graphene and semimeta…
Spin selective nature of spin-filter tunnel junctions can be integrated with conventional metallic ferromagnets to regulate spin polarized quasiparticles in superconducting devices. We report fabrication of pseudo spin-valve device made with a bilayer of nitride spin-filter tunnel barrier (DyN or GdN) and a transition metal ferromagnet (Co and Gd). We show resistance switching in these devices corresponding to parallel and antiparallel configuration of their mutual magnetization direction. With optimal deposition process partial nitridation of the Co layer can be achieved. The magnetically dea…
We present a model of a topological semimetal in three dimensions (3D) whose energy spectrum exhibits a nodal line acting as a vortex ring; this in turn is linked by a pseudospin structure akin to that of a smoke ring. Contrary to a Weyl point node spectrum, the vortex ring gives rise to skyrmionic pseudospin patterns in cuts on both sides of the nodal ring plane; this pattern covers the full Brillouin zone, thus leading to a new, `maximal', anomalous Hall effect in a 3D semimetal. Tuning a model parameter shrinks the vortex ring until it vanishes, giving way to a pair of Weyl nodes of opposit…
We theoretically investigate the barrier tunneling in the three-dimensional model of the hyperhoneycomb lattice, which is a nodal-line semimetal with a Dirac loop at zero energy. In the presence of a rectangular potential, the scattering amplitudes for different injecting states around the nodal loop are calculated, by using analytical treatments of the effective model, as well as numerical simulations of the tight binding model. In the low energy regime, states with remarkable transmissions are only concentrated in a small range around the loop plane. When the momentum of the injecting electr…
Klein tunneling refers to the absence of normal backscattering of electrons even under the case of high potential barriers. At the barrier interface, the perfect matching of electron and hole wavefunctions enables a unit transmission probability for normally incident electrons. It is theoretically and experimentally well understood in two-dimensional relativistic materials such as graphene. Here we investigate the Klein tunneling effect in Weyl semimetals under the influence of magnetic field induced by anti-symmetric ferromagnetic stripes placed at barrier boundaries. Our results show that th…
We investigate the tunneling conductance of Weyl semimetal with tilted energy dispersion by considering electron transmission through a p-n-p junction with one-dimensional electric and magnetic barrier. In the presence of both electric and magnetic barriers, we found that a large conductance gap can be produced by the aid of tilted energy dispersion without a band gap. The origin of this effect is the shift of the electrons wave-vector at barrier boundaries caused by i) the pseudo-magnetic field induced by electrical potential, i.e., a newly discovered feature that is only possible in the mate…
Weyl semimetal is a recently discovered state of quantum matter, which generally possesses tilted energy dispersion. Here, we investigate the electron tunneling through a Weyl semimetal p-n-p junction. The angular dependence of electron tunneling exhibits an anomalous profile such that perfect transmission angles are shifted along the direction of the tilt. Coupling of the tilted dispersion and electrical potential within the barrier region gives rise to a transverse momentum shift, which is analogous to the transverse Lorentz displacement induced by magnetic barriers.
We study transport across ballistic junctions of materials which host pseudospin-one fermions as emergent low-energy quasiparticles. The effective low-energy Hamiltonians of such fermions are described by integer spin Weyl models. We show that current conservation in such integer spin-$s$ Weyl systems requires continuity across a boundary of only $2s$ (out of $2s+1$) components of the wave function. Using the current conservation conditions, we study the transport between normal metal-barrier-normal metal (NBN) and normal metal-barrier-superconductor (NBS) junctions of such systems in the pres…
Electrons in graphene, in addition to their spin, have two pseudospin degrees of freedom: sublattice and valley pseudospin. Valleytronics uses the valley degree of freedom as a carrier of information similar to the way spintronics uses electron spin. We show how a double barrier structure consisting of electric and vector potentials can be used to filter massive Dirac electrons based on their valley index. We study the resonant transmission through a finite number of barriers and we obtain the energy spectrum of a superlattice consisting of electric and vector potentials. When a mass term is i…
We study a Josephson junction involving a Weyl and a multi-Weyl semimetal separated by a barrier region of width $d$ created by putting a gate voltage $U_0$ over the Weyl semimetal. The topological winding number of such a junction changes across the barrier. We show that $I_c R_N$ for such junctions, where $I_c$ is the critical current and $R_N$ the normal state resistance, in the thin barrier limit, has a universal value independent of the barrier potential. We provide an analytical expression of the Andreev bound states and use it to demonstrate that the universal value of $I_c R_N$ is a co…
We theoretically investigate negative differential resistance (NDR) of massless and massive Dirac Fermions in double barrier resonant tunneling diodes based on sufficiently short and wide graphene strips. The current-voltage characteristics calculated in a rotated pseudospin space show that, the NDR feature only presents with appropriate structural parameters for the massless case and the peak-to-valley current ratio can be enhanced exponentially by a tunable band gap. Remarkably, the lowest NDR operation window is nearly structure-free and can be almost solely controlled by a back gate, which…
We solve the Weyl electron scattered by a spherical step potential barrier. Tuning the incident energy and the potential radius, one can enter both quasiclassical and quantum regimes. Transport features related to far-field currents and integrated cross sections are studied to reveal the preferred forward scattering. In the quasiclassical regime, a strong focusing effect along the incident spherical axis is found in addition to optical caustic patterns. In the quantum regime, at energies of successive angular momentum resonances, a polar aggregation of electron density is found inside the pote…
We investigate the confined states and transport of three-dimensional Weyl electrons around a one-dimensional external rectangular electrostatic potential. Confined states with finite transverse wave vector exist at energies higher than the half well depth or lower than the half barrier height. The rectangular potential appears completely transparent to normal incident electrons but not otherwise. The tunneling transmission coefficient is sensitive to their incident angle and shows resonant peaks when their energy coincides with the confined spectra. In addition, for electrons in the conductio…
We generalize Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) semi-classical equations for pseudospin-1 $α-\mathcal{T}_3$ materials with arbitrary hopping parameter $0 < α< 1$, which includes the dice lattice and graphene as two limiting cases. In conjunction with a series-expansion method in powers of Planck constant $\hbar$, we acquired and solved a system of recurrent differential equations for semi-classical electron wave functions in $α-\mathcal{T}_3$. Making use of these obtained wave functions, we analyzed the physics-related mechanism and quantified the transmission of pseudospin-1 Dirac electrons acr…
We theoretically study a tunneling effect in a two-dimensional Dirac semimetal with two Dirac points protected by non-symmorphic symmetries. The tunnel barrier can be arranged by a magnetic exchange potential which opens a gap at the Dirac points which can be induced by a magnetic proximity effect of a ferromagnetic insulator. We found that the tunnel decay length increases with a decrease in the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, and moreover the dependence is attributed to the correlation of sublattice and spin degree of freedoms which lead to symmetry-protected Dirac points. The tunnel pr…
We investigate the tunneling magnetoresistance in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) comprised of Weyl semimetal contacts. We show that chirality-magnetization locking leads to a gigantic tunneling magnetoresistance ratio, an effect that does not rely on spin filtering by the tunnel barrier. Our results indicate that the conductance in the anti-parallel configuration is more sensitive to magnetization fluctuations than in MTJs with normal ferromagnets, and predicts a TMR as large as 10^4 % when realistic magnetization fluctuations are accounted for. In addition, we show that the Fermi arc states…
We generalize the construction of time-reversal symmetry-breaking triple-component semimetals, transforming under the pseudospin-1 representation, to arbitrary (anti-)monopole charge $2 n$, with $n=1,2,3$ in the crystalline environment. The quasiparticle spectra of such systems are composed of two dispersing bands with pseudospin projections $m_s=\pm 1$ and energy dispersions $E_{\bf k}=\pm \sqrt{ α^2_n k^{2n}_\perp +v^2_z k^2_z}$, where $k_\perp=\sqrt{k^2_x+k^2_y}$, and one completely flat band at zero energy with $m_s=0$. We construct simple tight-binding models for such spin-1 excitations o…
The conductance, the transmission and the reflection probabilities through rectangular potential barriers and pn-junctions are obtained for bilayer graphene taking into account the four bands of the energy spectrum. We have evaluated the importance of the skew hopping parameters γ3 and γ4 to these properties and show that for energies E>γ1/100 their effect is negligible. For high energies two modes of propagation exist and we investigate scattering between these modes. For perpendicular incidence both propagation modes are decoupled and scattering between them is forbidden. This extends the co…
We investigate the tunneling of quasiparticles through a rectangular potential barrier of finite height and width, in 2d and 3d semimetals with band structures consisting of a quadratic band crossing point. We compute the transmission coefficient at various incident angles, and also demonstrate the behaviour of the conductivity and the Fano factor. We discuss the distinguishing signatures of these transport properties in comparison with other semimetals, as well as electrons in normal metals.
We uncover the properties of complex tensor (d-wave) superconducting order in three-dimensional Rarita-Schwinger-Weyl semimetals that host pseudospin-3/2 fermions at a fourfold linear band crossing point. Although the general theory of d-wave order was originally developed for materials displaying quadratic band touching, it directly applies to the case of semimetals with linear dispersion, several candidate compounds of which have been discovered experimentally very recently. The spin-3/2 nature of the fermions allows for the formation of spin-2 Cooper pairs which may be described by a comple…
Klein tunneling is a counterintuitive quantum-mechanical phenomenon, predicting perfect transmission of relativistic particles through higher energy barriers. This phenomenon was shown to be supported at normal incidence in graphene due to pseudospin conservation. Here I show that Klein tunneling analogue can occur in classical systems, and remarkably, not relying on mimicking graphene's spinor wavefunction structure. Instead, the mechanism requires a particular form of constitutive parameters of the penetrated medium, yielding transmission properties identical to the quantum tunneling in grap…
A systematic treatment of graphene-semiconductor junction is presented. Finite density of states at the Fermi level of graphene leads to exotic electronic properties at graphene-semiconductor interface. Quite generally, the Schottky-Mott limit and the sum rule of barrier heights are violated due to the internal potential of graphene. By merging the principal characteristics of semiconductor-semiconductor and metal-semiconductor junctions, the graphene-semiconductor contact may be considered as an archetype of unprecedented \emph{semimetal-semiconductor junction}. Generalized interface equation…
A strong in-plane magnetic field drastically alters the low-energy spectrum of bilayer graphene by separating the parabolic energy dispersion into two linear Dirac cones. The effect of this dramatic change on the transport properties strongly depends on the orientation of the in-plane magnetic field with respect to the propagation direction of the charge carriers and the angle at which they impinge on the electrostatic potentials. For magnetic fields oriented parallel to the potential boundaries an additional propagating mode that results from the splitting into Dirac cones enhances the transm…
