We investigate the tunneling of quasiparticles through a rectangular potential barrier of finite height and width, in 2d and 3d semimetals with band structures consisting of a quadratic band crossing point. We compute the transmission coefficient at various incident angles, and also demonstrate the behaviour of the conductivity and the Fano factor. We discuss the distinguishing signatures of these transport properties in comparison with other semimetals, as well as electrons in normal metals.
We propose a novel approach to explore the properties of a quantum dot in the presence of the spin-orbit interaction and in a tilted magnetic field. The spin-orbit coupling within the quantum dot manifest itself as anti-crossing of the energy levels when the tilt angle is varied. The anti-crossing gap has a non-monotonic dependence on the magnitude of the magnetic field and exhibits a peak at some finite values of the magnetic field. From the dependence of the tunneling current through the quantum dot on the bias voltage and the tilt angle, the anti-crossing gap and most importantly the spin-o…
Recently, the electron transport through a quasi-one dimensional (quasi-1D) electron gas was investigated experimentally as a function of the confining potential. We present a physical model for quantum ballistic transport of electrons through a short conduction channel, and investigate the role played by the Coulomb interaction in modifying the energy levels of two-electron states at low temperatures as the width of the channel is increased. In this regime, the effect of the Coulomb interaction on the two-electron states has been shown to lead to four split energy levels, including two anti-c…
We study a double quantum dot system with two interacting electrons in the presence of a time-dependent periodic (AC) electric field and spin-orbit interaction. We focus on the phenomenon of Coherent Destruction of Tunneling (CDT) for an initially localized state. Because of the periodicity introduced by the AC field we use Floquet theory to find quasi energies with their crossing and anti-crossing points corresponding to CDT . We observe that the AC field rescales the spin orbit and hopping amplitudes in terms of Bessel functions. The zeros of the Bessel functions are of the form of a ratio o…
Quadratic band crossing points (QBCPs) and quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) have attracted the attention of both theoretical and experimental researchers in recent years. Based on first-principle calculations, we find that the FeB$_2$ monolayer is a nonmagnetic semimetal with QBCPs at $K$. Through symmetry analysis and $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ invariant theory, we find that the QBCP is not protected by rotation symmetry and consists of two Dirac points with same chirality (Berry phase of $2π$). Once introducing Coulomb interactions, we find that there is a spontaneous-time-reversal-brea…
Geometry of the wave function is a central pillar of modern solid state physics. In this work, we unveil the wave-function geometry of two-dimensional semimetals with band crossing points (BCPs). We show that the Berry phase of BCPs are governed by the quantum metric describing the infinitesimal distance between quantum states. For generic linear BCPs, we show that the corresponding Berry phase is determined either by an angular integral of the quantum metric, or equivalently, by the maximum quantum distance of Bloch states. This naturally explains the origin of the $π$-Berry phase of a linear…
We introduce a generalized Hamiltonian describing not only all topological phases observed experimentally in Kekulé graphene (KekGr) but predicting also new ones. These phases show features like a quadratic band crossing point, valley splitting, or the crossing of conduction bands, typically induced by Rashba spin-orbit interactions or Zeeman fields. The electrons in KekGr behave as Dirac fermions and follow pseudo-relativistic dispersion relations with Fermi velocities, rest masses, and valley-dependent self-gating. Transitions between the topological phases can be induced by tuning these par…
We investigate the impacts of combination of fermion-fermion interactions and impurity scatterings on the low-energy stabilities of two-dimensional asymmetric materials with a quadratic band crossing point by virtue of the renormalization group that allows us to treat distinct sorts of physical ingredients on the same footing. The coupled flow evolutions of all interaction parameters which carry the central physical information are derived by taking into account one-loop corrections. Several intriguing results are manifestly extracted from these entangled evolutions. At first, we realize that …
We study the energy spectrum and wave packet dynamics of electrons in a two-dimensional periodic potential subject to a perpendicular spatially modulated magnetic field. We observe avoided band crossings, metal-insulator transitions, and changes in the spreading direction of wave packets in two new situations: (i) for a purely magnetic modulation and (ii) in the limit of weak electric and magnetic modulations, where the Landau band coupling can be neglected. In the second case the corresponding classical system is no longer chaotic but integrable, whereby these phenomena are not expected. We a…
We carefully study how the fermion-fermion interactions affect the low-energy states of a two-dimensional spin-$1/2$ fermionic system on the kagomé lattice with a quadratic band crossing point. With the help of the renormalization group approach, we can treat all kinds of fermionic interactions on the the same footing and then establish the coupled energy-dependent flows of fermionic interaction parameters via collecting one-loop corrections, from which a number of interesting results are extracted in the low-energy regime. At first, various sorts of fermion-fermion interactions furiously comp…
Photo-induced transition probabilities in graphene are studied theoretically from the viewpoint of Floquet theory. Conduction band populations are computed for a strongly, periodically driven graphene sheet under linear, circular, and elliptic polarization. Features of the momentum spectrum of excited quasi-particles can be directly related to the avoided crossing of the Floquet quasi-energy levels. In particular, the impact of the ellipticity and the strength of the laser excitation on the avoided crossing structure -- and on the resulting transition probabilities -- is studied. It is shown t…
The quantum motions of hydrogen (H) atoms play an important role in the dynamical properties and functionalities of condensed phase materials as well as biological systems. In this work, based on the transfer matrix method and first-principles calculations, we study the dynamics of H atoms on Pt(111) surface and numerically calculate the quantum probability of H transferring across the surface potential fields. Atomic resonant tunneling (ART) is demonstrated along a number of diffusion pathways. Owing to resonant tunneling, anomalous rate of transfer is predicted for H diffusion along certain …
The paper examines weak localization (WL) of surface states with a quadratic band crossing in topological crystalline insulators. It is shown that the topology of the quadratic band crossing point dictates the negative sign of the WL conductivity correction. For the surface states with broken time-reversal symmetry, an explicit dependence of the WL conductivity on the band Berry flux is obtained and analyzed for different carrier-density regimes and types of the band structure (normal or inverted). These results suggest a way to detect the band Berry flux through WL measurements.
We calculate the transmission coefficient for a particle crossing a potential barrier in monolayer graphene with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and in bilayer graphene. We show that in both the cases one can go from Klein tunneling regime, characterized by perfect normal transmission, to anti-Klein tunneling regime, with perfect normal reflection, by tuning the Rashba spin-orbit coupling for a monolayer or the interplane coupling for a bilayer graphene. We show that the intermediate regime is characterized by a non-monotonic behavior with oscillations and resonances in the normal transmission ampl…
We consider tunneling of quasiparticles through a rectangular quantum well, subject to periodic driving. The quasiparticles are the itinerant charges in two-dimensional and three-dimensional semimetals having a quadratic band-touching (QBT) point in the Brillouin zone. In order to analyze the time-periodic Hamiltonian, we assume a non-adiabatic limit, where the Floquet theorem is applicable. By deriving the Floquet scattering matrices, we chalk out the transmission and shot noise spectra of the QBT semimetals. The spectra show Fano resonances, which we identify with the (quasi)bound states of …
We consider integer quantum Hall states and calculate bulk entanglement spectrum by formulating the correlation matrix in guiding center representation. Our analytical approach is based on the projection operator with redefining the inner product of states in Hilbert space to take care of the restriction imposed by the (rectangle-tiled) checkerboard partition. The resultant correlation matrix contains the coupling constants between states of different guiding centers parameterized by magnetic length and the period of partition. We find various band-crossings by tuning the flux $Φ$ threading ea…
