Geometry of the wave function is a central pillar of modern solid state physics. In this work, we unveil the wave-function geometry of two-dimensional semimetals with band crossing points (BCPs). We show that the Berry phase of BCPs are governed by the quantum metric describing the infinitesimal distance between quantum states. For generic linear BCPs, we show that the corresponding Berry phase is determined either by an angular integral of the quantum metric, or equivalently, by the maximum quantum distance of Bloch states. This naturally explains the origin of the $π$-Berry phase of a linear BCP. In the case of quadratic BCPs, the Berry phase can take an arbitrary value between 0 and $2π$. We find simple relations between the Berry phase, maximum quantum distance, and the quantum metric in two cases: (i) when one of the two crossing bands is flat; (ii) when the system has rotation and/or time-reversal symmetries. To demonstrate the implication of the continuum model analysis in lattice systems, we study tight-binding Hamiltonians describing quadratic BCPs. We show that, when the Berry curvature is absent, a quadratic BCP with an arbitrary Berry phase always accompanies another quadratic BCP so that the total Berry phase of the periodic system becomes zero. This work demonstrates that the quantum metric plays a critical role in understanding the geometric properties of topological semimetals.
Flat bands have band crossing points with other dispersive bands in many systems including the canonical flat band models in the Lieb and kagome lattices. Here we show that some of such band degeneracy points are unavoidable because of the symmetry representation (SR) of the flat band under unitary symmetry. We refer to such a band degeneracy point of flat bands as a SR-enforced band crossing. SR-enforced band crossing is distinct from the conventional band degeneracy protected by symmetry eigenvalues or topological charges in that its protection requires both specific symmetry representation …
Topological invariants in the band structure, such as Chern numbers, are crucial for the classification of topological matters and dictate the occurrence of exotic properties, yet their direct spectroscopic determination has been largely limited to electronic bands. Here, we use inelastic neutron scattering in conjunction with ab initio calculations to identify a variety of topological phonon band crossings in MnSi and CoSi single crystals. We find a distinct relation between the Chern numbers of a band-crossing node and the scattering intensity modulation in momentum space around the node. Gi…
We theoretically study the orbital magnetic susceptibility produced by electron states near a crossing point of two band-contact lines in a crystal. It is shown that this susceptibility can have an unusual dependence on the Fermi level and can change noticeably with the temperature when the Fermi level is in the vicinity of the crossing point. These features of the magnetic susceptibility can be useful in detecting the crossing points in crystal. The obtained results explain the well-known temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of V$_3$Si.
Dirac points are found to emerge due to the crossing of bands in the electronic structure of bilayer graphene for configurations in which the alignment between two hexagonal lattices preserves the parallelism of the armchair/zigzag lines between two layers. On the base of electronic calculations using a tight-binding model for the $π$ bands it is shown that the crossing of the energy-band dispersion curves occurs in the vicinity of the corner points of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. Group representation theory analysis confirms the emergence of such Dirac points. It is demonstrated that the ban…
We investigate the tunneling of quasiparticles through a rectangular potential barrier of finite height and width, in 2d and 3d semimetals with band structures consisting of a quadratic band crossing point. We compute the transmission coefficient at various incident angles, and also demonstrate the behaviour of the conductivity and the Fano factor. We discuss the distinguishing signatures of these transport properties in comparison with other semimetals, as well as electrons in normal metals.
The physics of non-local exchange interactions in graphene sheets is studied within a $π$-orbital tight-binding model using a Hartree-Fock approximation and Coulomb interactions modified at short distances by lattice effects and at large distances by dielectric screening. We use this study to comment on the strong non-locality of exchange effects in systems with isolated band-crossings at energies close to the Fermi energy. We also discuss the role of lattice scale details of the effective Coulomb interaction in determining whether or not broken symmetry states appear at strong interaction str…
We study the energy spectrum and wave packet dynamics of electrons in a two-dimensional periodic potential subject to a perpendicular spatially modulated magnetic field. We observe avoided band crossings, metal-insulator transitions, and changes in the spreading direction of wave packets in two new situations: (i) for a purely magnetic modulation and (ii) in the limit of weak electric and magnetic modulations, where the Landau band coupling can be neglected. In the second case the corresponding classical system is no longer chaotic but integrable, whereby these phenomena are not expected. We a…
We explore ballistic regime quantum transport characteristics of oxide-embedded crossing and kinked silicon nanowires (NWs) within a large-scale empirical pseudopotential electronic structure framework, coupled to the Kubo-Greenwood transport analysis. A real-space wave function study is undertaken and the outcomes are interpreted together with the findings of ballistic transport calculations. This reveals that ballistic transport edge lies tens to hundreds of millielectron volts above the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, with a substantial number of localized states appearing in between, …
Avoided band crossings have been studied theoretically and it has been shown that they can provide a tunning of the metal-insulator transition. Here we present an experimental example of an avoided band crossing for a classical undulatory system: torsional waves in locally periodic rods. To excite and detect the torsional waves, an electromagnetic-acoustic transducer for low-frequencies that we have recently developed, is used. Calculations performed using the transfer matrix method agree with the experimental measurements. In the observed avoided band crossing one level, which is a border-ind…
In topological insulators and topological superconductors, the discrete jump of the topological invariant upon tuning a certain system parameter defines a topological phase transition. A unified framework is employed to address the quantum criticality of the topological phase transitions in one to three spatial dimensions, which simultaneously incorporates the symmetry classification, order of band crossing, $m$-fold rotational symmetry, correlation functions, critical exponents, scaling laws, and renormalization group approach. We first classify higher-order Dirac models according to the time…
Thermoelectric transport in strongly spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional Rashba system is studied using the exact solution of the linearized Boltzmann equation. Some unusual transport behaviors are revealed. We show that the electrical conductivity takes a Drude form when the Fermi energy $E_{F}$ is above the band crossing point, but a non-Drude form which is a quadratic function of $E_{F}$ when $E_{F}$ lies below the band crossing point. The Mott relation breaks down when $E_{F}$ lies in the vicinity of the band crossing point. It is shown that the thermopower and thermoelectric figure of meri…
In two-dimensional heterostructures, crystalline atomic layers with differing lattice parameters can stack directly one on another. The resultant close proximity of atomic lattices with differing periodicity can lead to new phenomena. For umklapp processes, this opens the possibility for interlayer umklapp scattering, where interactions are mediated by the transfer of momenta to or from the lattice in the neighbouring layer. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study a graphene on InSe heterostructure, we present evidence that interlayer umklapp processes can cause hybridization …
Multiple line nodes in energy-band gaps are found in semimetals preserving mirror-reflection symmetry. We classify possible configurations of multiple line nodes with crossing points (crossing line nodes) under point-group symmetry. Taking the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) into account, we also classify topological phase transitions from crossing-line-node Dirac semimetals to other topological phases, e.g., topological insulators and point-node semimetals. This study enables one to find crossing-line-node semimetal materials and their behavior in the presence of SOI from the band structure in t…
The physics of massless relativistic quantum particles has recently arisen in the electronic properties of solids following the discovery of graphene. Around the accidental crossing of two energy bands, the electronic excitations are described by a Weyl equation initially derived for ultra-relativistic particles. Similar three and four band semimetals have recently been discovered in two and three dimensions. Among the remarkable features of graphene are the characterization of the band crossings by a topological Berry winding, leading to an anomalous quantum Hall effect, and a finite minimal …
In this work, we develop a systematic method of constructing flat-band models with and without band crossings. Our construction scheme utilizes the symmetry and spatial shape of a compact localized state (CLS) and also the singularity of the flat-band wave function obtained by a Fourier transform of the CLS (FT-CLS). In order to construct a flat-band model systematically using these ingredients, we first choose a CLS with a specific symmetry representation in a given lattice. Then, the singularity of FT-CLS indicates whether the resulting flat band exhibits a band crossing point or not. A tigh…
A recently found metal-insulator transition in a model for cyclotron resonance in a two-dimensional periodic potential is investigated by means of spectral properties of the time evolution operator. The previously found dynamical signatures of the transition are explained in terms of avoided band crossings due to the change of the external electric field. The occurrence of a cross-like transport is predicted and numerically confirmed.
Nonsymmoprhic symmetries, such as screw rotations or glide reflections, can enforce band crossings within high-symmetry lines or planes of the Brillouin zone. When these band degeneracies are close to the Fermi energy, they can give rise to a number of unusual phenomena: e.g., anomalous magnetoelectric responses, transverse Hall currents, and exotic surface states. In this paper, we present a comprehensive classification of such nonsymmorphic band crossings in trigonal materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. We find that in trigonal systems there are two different types of nonsymmorphic ban…
We show that the position-momentum duality offers a transparent interpretation of the band geometry at the topological band crossings. Under this duality, the band geometry with Berry connection is dual to the free-electron motion under gauge field. This identifies the trace of quantum metric as the dual energy in momentum space. The band crossings with Berry defects thus induce the dual energy quantization in the trace of quantum metric. For the $\mathbb Z$ nodal-point and nodal-surface semimetals in three dimensions, the dual Landau level quantization occurs owing to the Berry charges. Meanw…
Topological semimetals exhibit band crossings near the Fermi energy, which are protected by the nontrivial topological character of the wave functions. In many cases, these topological band degeneracies give rise to exotic surface states and unusual magneto-transport properties. In this paper, we present a complete classification of all possible nonsymmorphic band degeneracies in hexagonal materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. This includes (i) band crossings protected by conventional nonsymmorphic symmetries, whose partial translation is within the invariant space of the mirror/rotation …
We show that chiral (nearly) flat band superconductivity can develop and host novel Majorana fermions at a time-reversal pair of symmetry-protected three-band crossing points. Based on symmetry analysis, mean-field study, and superfluid stiffness calculation, we determine and analyze the irreducible pairing channels with flat band pairings in the low-energy spin-$1$ fermion theory. Flat band pairing can enhance superconductivity dramatically, where the critical temperature scales linearly in the interaction strength. While fully gapped flat band pairing states develop in the single-component p…
We calculate the electrical and thermal conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas with strong spin--orbit coupling in which the scattering is dominated by electron--electron collisions. Despite the apparent absence of Galilean invariance in the system, the two-particle scattering does not affect the electrical conductivity above the band-crossing point where both helicity bands are filled. Below the band-crossing point where one helicity band is empty, switching on the electron--electron scattering leads only to a limited decrease of the electrical conductivity, so that its high-temperatu…
We show that for two-band systems nonsymmorphic symmetries may enforce the existence of band crossings in the bulk, which realize Fermi surfaces of reduced dimensionality. We find that these unavoidable crossings originate from the momentum dependence of the nonsymmorphic symmetry, which puts strong restrictions on the global structure of the band configurations. Three different types of nonsymmorphic symmetries are considered: (i) a unitary nonsymmorphic symmetry, (ii) a nonsymmorphic magnetic symmetry, and (iii) a nonsymmorphic symmetry combined with inversion. For nonsymmorphic symmetries o…
Topological semimetals can be classified by the connectivity and dimensionality of the band cross- ing in momentum space. The band crossings of a Dirac, Weyl, or an unconventional fermion semimet- al are 0D points, whereas the band crossings of a nodal-line semimetal are 1D closed loops. Here we propose that the presence of perpendicular crystalline mirror planes can protect 3D band crossings characterized by nontrivial links such as a Hopf link or a coupled-chain, giving rise to a variety of new types of topological semimetals. We show that the nontrivial winding number protects topolog- ical…
Topological semimetals are under intensive theoretical and experimental studies. The first step of these studies is always the theoretical (numerical) predication of one of several candidate materials, starting from first principles. In these calculations, it is crucial that all topological band crossings, including their types and positions in the Brillouin zone, are found. While band crossings along high-symmetry lines, which are routinely scanned in numerics, are simple to locate, the ones at generic momenta are notoriously time-consuming to find, and may be easily missed. In this paper, we…
Quadratic band crossing points (QBCPs) and quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) have attracted the attention of both theoretical and experimental researchers in recent years. Based on first-principle calculations, we find that the FeB$_2$ monolayer is a nonmagnetic semimetal with QBCPs at $K$. Through symmetry analysis and $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ invariant theory, we find that the QBCP is not protected by rotation symmetry and consists of two Dirac points with same chirality (Berry phase of $2π$). Once introducing Coulomb interactions, we find that there is a spontaneous-time-reversal-brea…
We study the occurrence of symmetry-enforced topological band crossings in tetragonal crystals with strong spin-orbit coupling. By computing the momentum dependence of the symmetry eigenvalues and the global band topology in the entire Brillouin zone, we determine all symmetry-enforced band crossings in tetragonal space groups. In particular, we classify all Dirac and Weyl degeneracies on points, lines, and planes, and find a rich variety of topological degeneracies. This includes, among others, double Weyl points, fourfold-double Weyl points, fourfold-quadruple Weyl points, Weyl and Dirac nod…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of layered ternary telluride Ta3SiTe6 which is predicted to host nodal lines associated with nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry. We found that the energy bands in the valence-band region show Dirac-like dispersions which present a band degeneracy at the R point of the bulk orthorhombic Brillouin zone. This band degeneracy extends one-dimensionally along the whole SR high-symmetry line, forming the nodal lines protected by the glide mirror symmetry of the crystal. We also observed a small band splitting near EF which supports the existence…
Topological metals and semimetals (TMs) have recently drawn significant interest. These materials give rise to condensed matter realizations of many important concepts in high-energy physics, leading to wide-ranging protected properties in transport and spectroscopic experiments. The most studied TMs, i.e., Weyl and Dirac semimetals, feature quasiparticles that are direct analogues of the textbook elementary particles. Moreover, the TMs known so far can be characterized based on the dimensionality of the band crossing. While Weyl and Dirac semimetals feature zero-dimensional points, the band c…
We classify all possible gap-closing procedures which can be achieved in two-dimensional time-reversal invariant noncentrosymmetric systems. For exhaustive classification, we examine the space group symmetries of all 49 layer groups lacking inversion taking into account spin-orbit coupling. Although a direct transition between two insulators is generally predicted to occur when a band crossing happens at a general point in the Brillouin zone, we find that a variety of stable semimetal phases with point or line nodes can also arise due to the band crossing in the presence of additional crystall…
We investigate the electron spectra, Fermi surfaces and their characteristics near crossing points of two band-contact lines in nodal-line semimetals. In particular, the extremal cross-sectional areas, and the appropriate cyclotron masses are calculated. We also find the phase of the quantum oscillations associated with the electron orbits near the crossing point. The analysis of all these quantities is carried out both without and with consideration of the spin-orbit interaction. To illustrate the obtained results, we apply them to ZrSiS in which the crossing of the nodal lines occurs.
Semiclassical quantization rules compactly describe the energy dispersion of Landau levels, and are predictive of quantum oscillations in transport and thermodynamic quantities. Such rules -- as formulated by Onsager, Lifshitz and Roth -- apply when the spin-orbit interaction dominates over the Zeeman interaction (or vice versa), but does not generally apply when the two interactions are comparable in strength. In this work, we present a generalized quantization rule which treats the spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions on equal footing, and therefore has wider applicability to spin-orbit-couple…
We derive an exact solution of an explicitly time-dependent multichannel model of quantum mechanical nonadiabatic transitions. Our model corresponds to the case of a single linear diabatic energy level interacting with a band of an arbitrary N states, for which the diabatic energies decay with time according to the Coulomb law. We show that the time-dependent Schroedingier equation for this system can be solved in terms of Meijer functions whose asymptotics at a large time can be compactly written in terms of elementary functions that depend on the roots of an Nth order characteristic polynomi…
We consider integer quantum Hall states and calculate bulk entanglement spectrum by formulating the correlation matrix in guiding center representation. Our analytical approach is based on the projection operator with redefining the inner product of states in Hilbert space to take care of the restriction imposed by the (rectangle-tiled) checkerboard partition. The resultant correlation matrix contains the coupling constants between states of different guiding centers parameterized by magnetic length and the period of partition. We find various band-crossings by tuning the flux $Φ$ threading ea…
We consider a model of an electron in a crystal moving under the influence of an external electric field: Schroedinger's equation in one spatial dimension with a potential which is the sum of a periodic function $V$ and a smooth function $W$. We assume that the period of $V$ is much shorter than the scale of variation of $W$ and denote the ratio of these scales by $ε$. We consider the dynamics of $\textit{semiclassical wavepacket}$ asymptotic (in the limit $ε\downarrow 0$) solutions which are spectrally localized near to a $\textit{crossing}$ of two Bloch band dispersion functions of the perio…
Relativistic fermions in topological quantum materials are characterized by linear energy-momentum dispersion near band crossing points. Under magnetic field, relativistic fermions acquire Berry phase of π in cyclotron motion, leading to a zeroth Landau level (LL) at the crossing point. Such field-independent zeroth LL, which distinguishes relativistic fermions from conventional electron systems, is hardly probed in transport measurements since the Fermi energy (EF) is usually not right at the band crossing points in most topological materials. Here we report the observation of exotic quantum …
We investigate the impacts of combination of fermion-fermion interactions and impurity scatterings on the low-energy stabilities of two-dimensional asymmetric materials with a quadratic band crossing point by virtue of the renormalization group that allows us to treat distinct sorts of physical ingredients on the same footing. The coupled flow evolutions of all interaction parameters which carry the central physical information are derived by taking into account one-loop corrections. Several intriguing results are manifestly extracted from these entangled evolutions. At first, we realize that …
We show how to realize topologically protected crossings of three energy bands, integer-spin analogs of Weyl fermions, in three-dimensional optical lattices. Our proposal only involves ultracold atom techniques that have already been experimentally demonstrated and leads to isolated triple-point crossings (TPCs) which are required to exist by a novel combination of lattice symmetries. The symmetries also allow for a new type of topological object, the type-II, or tilted, TPC. Our Rapid Communication shows that spin-1 Weyl points, which have not yet been observed in the bandstructure of crystal…
A recent single quantum wire is of sufficient quality to reveal new details of the photoluminescence (PL) evolution with increasing electron--hole (e--h) pair density. At a pair density of 3.6 $\times$ 10$^{3}$ cm$^{-1}$, the PL is characteristic of biexcitons shifted below the exciton peak by the 2.8-meV biexciton binding. At the pair density of 1.2 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ cm$^{-1}$, the biexciton peak broadens without energy shift to an e--h plasma. At all pair densities up to 30 K, neither the exciton peak nor the one-dimensional (1D) continuum edge shows any shift. In contrast to prevailing theo…
Boltzmann transport theory fails near the linear band-crossing of single-layer graphene and near the quadratic band-crossing of bilayer graphene. We report on a numerical study which assesses the role of inter-band coherence in transport when the Fermi level lies near the band-crossing energy of bilayer graphene. We find that interband coherence enhances conduction, and that it plays an essential role in graphene's minimum conductivity phenomena. This behavior is qualitatively captured by an approximate theory which treats inter-band coherence in a relaxation-time approximation. On the basis o…
We carefully study how the fermion-fermion interactions affect the low-energy states of a two-dimensional spin-$1/2$ fermionic system on the kagomé lattice with a quadratic band crossing point. With the help of the renormalization group approach, we can treat all kinds of fermionic interactions on the the same footing and then establish the coupled energy-dependent flows of fermionic interaction parameters via collecting one-loop corrections, from which a number of interesting results are extracted in the low-energy regime. At first, various sorts of fermion-fermion interactions furiously comp…
We review recent theoretical progress in the understanding and prediction of novel topological semimetals. Topological semimetals define a class of gapless electronic phases exhibiting topologically stable crossings of energy bands. Different types of topological semimetals can be distinguished based on the degeneracy of the band crossings, their codimension (e.g., point or line nodes), as well as the crystal space group symmetries on which the protection of stable band crossings relies. The dispersion near the band crossing is a further discriminating characteristic. These properties give ris…
We report measurements of the quantum Hall state energy gap at avoided crossings between Landau levels originating from different conduction band valleys in AlAs quantum wells. These gaps exhibit an approximately linear dependence on magnetic field over a wide range of fields and filling factors. More remarkably, we observe an unexpected dependence of the gap size on the relative spin orientation of the crossing levels, with parallel-spin crossings exhibiting larger gaps than antiparallel-spin crossings.
In van der Waals heterostructures, the relative alignment of bands between layers, and the resulting band hybridisation, are key factors in determining a range of electronic properties. This work examines these effects for heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), an ubiquitous combination given the role of hBN as an encapsulating material. By comparing results of density functional calculations with experimental angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results, we explore the hybridisation between the valence states of the TMD and …
The paper examines weak localization (WL) of surface states with a quadratic band crossing in topological crystalline insulators. It is shown that the topology of the quadratic band crossing point dictates the negative sign of the WL conductivity correction. For the surface states with broken time-reversal symmetry, an explicit dependence of the WL conductivity on the band Berry flux is obtained and analyzed for different carrier-density regimes and types of the band structure (normal or inverted). These results suggest a way to detect the band Berry flux through WL measurements.

Two-dimensional (2D) band crossing semimetals (BCSMs) could be used to build a range of novel nanoscale devices such as superlenses and transistors. We find that symmorphic symmetry can protect a new type of robust 2D BCSMs, unlike the previously proposed 2D essential BCSMs protected by non-symmorphic symmetry [Young et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 126803 (2015)]. This type of symmorphic symmetry protected (SSP) 2D essential BCSMs cannot be pair annihilated without destroying the crystalline symmetries, as opposed to the 2D BCSMs caused by the accidental band crossing. Through group theory analy…
