Two-dimensional (2D) band crossing semimetals (BCSMs) could be used to build a range of novel nanoscale devices such as superlenses and transistors. We find that symmorphic symmetry can protect a new type of robust 2D BCSMs, unlike the previously proposed 2D essential BCSMs protected by non-symmorphic symmetry [Young et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 126803 (2015)]. This type of symmorphic symmetry protected (SSP) 2D essential BCSMs cannot be pair annihilated without destroying the crystalline symmetries, as opposed to the 2D BCSMs caused by the accidental band crossing. Through group theory analysis, we find that 2D SSP BCSMs can only exist at the K (K') point of Brillouin zone (BZ) of four layer groups and identify nonmagnetic 2D FeB2 as a candidate. Interestingly, nonmagnetic 2D SSP BCSMs can host a single pair of band crossing points (BCPs), whereas nonmagnetic three-dimensional (3D) Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have at least two pairs of band crossing Weyl points. It is found that the single pair of BCPs are robust against any kinds of strain. Furthermore, our calculation suggests that essential 2D SSP BCSMs can be used to realize electric field control of spin-texture, thus are promising candidates for spintronic devices.
The unique properties of topological semimetals have strongly driven efforts to seek for new topological phases and related materials. Here, we identify a critical condition for the existence of linked nodal rings (LNRs) in symmorphic crystals, and propose that three types of LNRs, named as alpha-, beta- and gamma-type, can be obtained by stacking semiconducting layers. Several honeycomb structures are suggested to be topological LNR semimetals, including layered and "hidden" layered structures. Transitions between the three types of LNRs can be driven by external strains. Interesting surface …
Dirac materials have unique transport properties, partly due to the presence of surface states. A new type of Dirac materials, protected by non-symmorphic symmetries was recently proposed by Young and Kane [1]. By breaking of time reversal or inversion symmetry one can split the Dirac cones into Weyl nodes. The later are characterized by local Chern numbers, that makes them two-dimensional analogs of Weyl semimetals. We find that the formation of the Weyl nodes is accompanied by an emergence of one-dimensional surface states, similar to Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals and edge states in two-dime…
We theoretically study a tunneling effect in a two-dimensional Dirac semimetal with two Dirac points protected by non-symmorphic symmetries. The tunnel barrier can be arranged by a magnetic exchange potential which opens a gap at the Dirac points which can be induced by a magnetic proximity effect of a ferromagnetic insulator. We found that the tunnel decay length increases with a decrease in the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, and moreover the dependence is attributed to the correlation of sublattice and spin degree of freedoms which lead to symmetry-protected Dirac points. The tunnel pr…
We employ angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to investigate the Fermi surface of RuO$_2$. We find a network of two Dirac nodal lines (DNL) as previously predicted in theory, where the valence- and conduction bands touch along continuous lines in momentum space. In addition, we find evidence for a third DNL close to the Fermi level which appears robust despite the presence of significant spin orbit coupling. We demonstrate that the third DNL gives rise to a topologically trivial flat-band surface state (FBSS) at the (110) surface. This FBSS can be tuned by surface doping and pres…
We present a new type of three-dimensional essential Dirac semimetal with magnetic ordering. The Dirac points are protected by the magnetic space groups and cannot be gapped without lowering such symmetries, where the combined antiunitary symmetry of half-translation operator and time-reversal plays an essential role. We introduce two explicit tight-binding models for space groups $16$ and $102$, which possesses Dirac point at time-reversal-invariant momenta of surface Brillouin zone. In contrast to the time-reversal-invariant essential Dirac semimetal, the magnetic space groups here can be ei…
Topological metals and semimetals (TMs) have recently drawn significant interest. These materials give rise to condensed matter realizations of many important concepts in high-energy physics, leading to wide-ranging protected properties in transport and spectroscopic experiments. The most studied TMs, i.e., Weyl and Dirac semimetals, feature quasiparticles that are direct analogues of the textbook elementary particles. Moreover, the TMs known so far can be characterized based on the dimensionality of the band crossing. While Weyl and Dirac semimetals feature zero-dimensional points, the band c…
In this work, we identify a new class of Z2 topological insulator protected by non-symmorphic crystalline symmetry, dubbed a "topological non-symmorphic crystalline insulator". We construct a concrete tight-binding model with the non-symmorphic space group pmg and confirm the topological nature of this model by calculating topological surface states and defining a Z2 topological invariant. Based on the projective representation theory, we extend our discussion to other non-symmorphic space groups that allows to host topological non-symmorphic crystalline insulators.
Gapless topological phases of matter may host emergent quasiparticle excitations which have no analog in quantum field theory. This is the case of so called triple point fermions (TPF), quasiparticle excitations protected by crystal symmetries, which show fermionic statistics but have an integer (pseudo)spin degree of freedom. TPFs have been predicted in certain three-dimensional non-symmorphic crystals, where they are pinned to high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. In this work, we introduce a minimal, three-band model which hosts TPFs protected only by the combination of a C4 rotation …
Negative magnetoresistance is rare in non-magnetic materials. Recently, a negative magnetoresistance has been observed in the quantum limit of $β$-Ag$_2$Se, where only one band of Landau levels is occupied in a strong magnetic field parallel to the applied current. $β$-Ag$_2$Se is a material that host a Kramers Weyl cone with band degeneracy near the Fermi energy. Kramers Weyl cones exist at time-reversal invariant momenta in all symmorphic chiral crystals, and at a subset of these momenta, including the $Γ$ point, in non-symmorphic chiral crystals. Here, we present a theory for the negative m…
Studying many-body versions of Landau-Zener-like problems of non-interacting electrons in the Slater formalism for several $k \cdot p$ models representing Weyl and Dirac semimetals, we systematically include non-adiabatic corrections to a quantum limit of chiral charge pumping in these models. In this paper, we show that relative homotopy invariant [Sun et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 106402 (2018)] and Euler class invariant [Bouhon et al., Nat. Phys. 16, 1137 (2020)] non-trivially manifest in the non-adiabatic corrections to the quantum limit of chiral charge pumping. These corrections could af…
We propose a class of topological metals, which we dub \emph{Hund nodal line semimetals}, arising from the strong Coulomb interaction encoded in the Hund's coupling between itinerant electrons and localized spins. We here consider a particular twisted spin configuration, which is realized in the double exchange model which describes the manganite oxides. The resulting effective tetragonal lattice of electrons with hoppings tied to the local spin features an antiunitary \emph{non-symmorphic} symmetry that in turn, together with another non-symmorphic but unitary, glide mirror symmetry, protects…
The experimental discovery of the topological Dirac semimetal establishes a platform to search for various exotic quantum phases in real materials. ZrSiS-type materials have recently emerged as topological nodal-line semimetals where gapped Dirac-like surface states are observed. Here, we present a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of ZrGeTe, a nonsymmorphic symmetry protected Dirac semimetal. We observe two Dirac-like gapless surface states at the same $\bar X$ point of the Brillouin zone. Our theoretical analysis and first-principles calculations reveal that …
In general, the stability of a band crossing point indicates the presence of a quantized topological number associated with it. In particular, the recent discovery of three-dimensional Dirac semimetals in Na$_{3}$Bi and Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ demonstrates that a Dirac point with four-fold degeneracy can be stable as long as certain crystalline symmetries are supplemented in addition to the time-reversal and inversion symmetries. However, the topological charges associated with Na$_{3}$Bi and Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ are not clarified yet. In this work, we identify the topological charge of three-dimensional…
Graphene is famous for being a host of 2D Dirac fermions. However, spin-orbit coupling introduces a small gap, so that graphene is formally a quantum spin hall insulator. Here we present symmetry-protected 2D Dirac semimetals, which feature Dirac cones at high-symmetry points that are \emph{not} gapped by spin-orbit interactions, and exhibit behavior distinct from both graphene and 3D Dirac semimetals. Using a two-site tight-binding model, we construct representatives of three possible distinct Dirac semimetal phases, and show that single symmetry-protected Dirac points are impossible in two d…
Ideal Weyl semimetals with all Weyl nodes exactly at the Fermi level and no coexisting trivial Fermi surfaces in the bulk, similar to graphene, could feature deep physics such as exotic transport phenomena induced by the chiral anomaly. Here, we show that HgTe and half-Heusler compounds, under a broad range of in-plane compressive strain, could be materials in nature realizing ideal Weyl semimetals with four pairs of Weyl nodes and topological surface Fermi arcs. Generically, we find that the HgTe-class materials with nontrivial band inversion and noncentrosymmetry provide a promising arena to…
Non-symmorphic symmetries protect Dirac line nodes in square net materials. This phenomenon has been most prominently observed in ZrSiS. Here, we systematically study the symmetry-protected nodal fermions that result from different ways of embedding the square net into a larger unit cell. Surprisingly, we find that a nonsymmorphic space group is not a necessary condition for a filling enforced semimetal: symmorphic space groups can also host nodal fermions that are enforced by band folding and electron count, that is, a combination of a particular structural motif combined with electron fillin…
While the topological classification of insulators, semimetals, and superconductors in terms of nonspatial symmetries is well understood, less is known about topological states protected by crystalline symmetries, such as mirror reflections and rotations. In this work, we systematically classify topological semimetals and nodal superconductors that are protected, not only by nonspatial (i.e., global) symmetries, but also by a crystal reflection symmetry. We find that the classification crucially depends on (i) the codimension of the Fermi surface (nodal line or point) of the semimetal (superco…
The search for symmetry-protected 2D Dirac semimetals analogous to graphene is important both for fundamental and practical interest. The 2D Dirac cones are protected by crystalline symmetries and magnetic ordering may destroy their robustness. Here we propose a general framework to classify stable 2D Dirac semimetals in spin-orbit coupled systems having the combined time-reversal and inversion symmetries, and show the existence of the stable Dirac points in 2D antiferromagnetic semimetals. Compared to 3D Dirac semimetals which fall into two distinct classes, Dirac semimetals in 2D with combin…
We study the electric-field tunable electronic properties of phosphorene thin films, using the framework of density functional theory. We show that phosphorene thin films offer a versatile material platform to study two dimensional Dirac fermions on application of a transverse electric field. Increasing the strength of the transverse electric field beyond a certain critical value in phosphorene leads to the formation of two symmetry protected gapless Dirac fermions states with anisotropic energy dispersion. The spin-orbit coupling splits each of these Dirac state into two spin- polarized Dirac…
Topological semimetals have energy bands near the Fermi energy sticking together at isolated points/lines/planes in the momentum space, which are often accompanied by stable surface states and intriguing bulk topological responses. Although it has been known that certain crystalline symmetries play an important role in protecting band degeneracy, a general recipe for stabilizing the degeneracy, especially in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, is still lacking. Here we show that a class of novel topological semimetals with point/line nodes can emerge in the presence of an off-centered rotatio…
We investigate the topological phase derived by time-reversal breaking fields in a nonsymmorphic symmetry-protected two-dimensional Dirac semimetal. When the nonsymmorphic symmetry is preserved even in the presence of the field, the two-dimensional electronic states change into two distinct topological phases with the insulating gap. One phase is well-known as quantum Hall states with chiral edge modes accompanying the Hall current, but the other one is an unconventional topological phase with helical edge modes in the absence of time-reversal symmetry.
The magnetotransport properties of disordered ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals are investigated numerically. We found an extraordinarily stable and huge magnetoresistance effect in domain walls of Weyl semimetals. This effect originates from the helicity mismatch of Weyl fermions and is a specific property of Weyl semimetals. Although conventional magnetoresistance effects are strongly suppressed in domain walls where local magnetization varies gradually, the helicity-protected magnetoresistance in Weyl semimetals maintains almost $100\%$ of the magnetoresistance ratio for any kind of thick domai…
We propose that the topological semimetal features can co-exist with ferromagnetic ground state in vanadium-phosphorous-oxide $β$-V$_2$OPO$_4$ compound from first-principles calculations. In this magnetic system with inversion symmetry, the direction of magnetization is able to manipulate the symmetric protected band structures from a node-line type to a Weyl one in the presence of spin-orbital-coupling. The node-line semimetal phase is protected by the mirror symmetry with the reflection-invariant plane perpendicular to magnetic order. Within mirror symmetry breaking due to the magnetization …
We theoretically study the spin and charge currents induced by a spin-motive force in a two-dimensional Dirac semimetal protected by nonsymmorphic symmetries. Glide mirror plane symmetry, a nonsymmorphic symmetry, leads to a constraint to the induced current; the spin-motive force acting on out-of-plane spin (in-plane spin) induces the pure spin (charge) current. We calculate the response function to the spin-motive force in linear response theory and find that the conductivity for the pure spin current remains non-zero even if the Fermi energy is crossing the node of linear dispersion. We als…
Based on first-principles calculation and effective model analysis, we propose that the cubic antiperovskite material Cu$_3$PdN can host a three-dimensional (3D) topological nodal line semimetal state when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored, which is protected by coexistence of time-reversal and inversion symmetry. There are three nodal line circles in total due to the cubic symmetry. "Drumhead"-like surface flat bands are also derived. When SOC is included, each nodal line evolves into a pair of stable 3D Dirac points as protected by C$_4$ crystal symmetry. This is remarkably distinguished …
The first Weyl semimetal was recently discovered in the NbP class of compounds. Although the topology of these novel materials has been identified, the surface properties are not yet fully understood. By means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we find that NbPs (001) surface hosts a pair of Dirac cones protected by mirror symmetry. Through our high resolution spectroscopic measurements, we resolve the quantum interference patterns arising from these novel Dirac fermions, and reveal their electronic structure, including the linear dispersions. Our data, in agreement with our theoretical calcu…
One of the cornerstones for topological quantum computations is the Majorana zero mode, which has been intensively searched in fractional quantum Hall systems and topological superconductors. Several recent works suggest that such an exotic mode can also exist in a one-dimensional (1D) interacting double-wire setup even without long-range superconductivity. A notable instability in these proposals comes from interchannel single-particle tunneling that spoils the topological ground state degeneracy. Here we show that a 1D Dirac semimetal (DSM) nanowire is an ideal number-conserving platform to …
We theoretically study the three-dimensional topological semimetals with nodal surfaces protected by crystalline symmetries. Different from the well-known nodal-point and nodal-line semimetals, in these materials, the conduction and valence bands cross on closed nodal surfaces in the Brillouin zone. We propose different classes of nodal surfaces, both in the absence and in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In the absence of SOC, a class of nodal surfaces can be protected by spacetime inversion symmetry and sublattice symmetry and characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index, while another …
We report the realization of novel symmetry-protected Dirac fermions in a surface-doped two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, black phosphorus. The widely tunable band gap of black phosphorus by the surface Stark effect is employed to achieve a surprisingly large band inversion up to ~0.6 eV. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra directly reveal the pair creation of Dirac points and their moving along the axis of the glide-mirror symmetry. Unlike graphene, the Dirac point of black phosphorus is stable, as protected by spacetime inversion symmetry, even in the presence of spin-orbi…
Filling-enforced Dirac semimetals, or those required at specific fillings by the combination of crystalline and time-reversal symmetries, have been proposed and discovered in numerous materials. However, Dirac points in these materials are not generally robust against breaking or modifying time-reversal symmetry. We present a new class of two-dimensional Dirac semimetal protected by the combination of crystal symmetries and a special, antiferromagnetic time-reversal symmetry. Systems in this class of magnetic layer groups, while having broken time-reversal symmetry, still respect the operation…
We study the collective charge-density modes (plasmons) of two-dimensional nonsymmorphic Dirac semimetals, within the random-phase approximation (RPA) in presence of Coulomb interaction. Without loss of generality, we consider a system in a two-dimensional square-lattice, based on the model originally predicted by Young and Kane (https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.115.126803), where the non-interacting band-structure consists of three band-touching points, near which the electronic states follow Dirac equations. Two of these Dirac nodes, at the momentum points $X_1$ and $X_2$, are anisotropic…
We theoretically study three-dimensional topological semimetals (TSMs) with nodal lines protected by crystalline symmetries. Compared with TSMs with point nodes, e.g., Weyl semimetals and Dirac semimetals, where the conduction and the valence bands touch at discrete points, in these new TSMs the two bands cross at closed lines in the Brillouin zone. We propose two new classes of symmetry protected nodal lines in the absence and in the presence of spin-orbital coupling (SOC), respectively. In the former, we discuss nodal lines that are protected by the combination of inversion symmetry and time…
We perform a complete classification of two-band $\bk\cdot\mathbf{p}$ theories at band crossing points in 3D semimetals with $n$-fold rotation symmetry and broken time-reversal symmetry. Using this classification, we show the existence of new 3D topological semimetals characterized by $C_{4,6}$-protected double-Weyl nodes with quadratic in-plane (along $k_{x,y}$) dispersion or $C_6$-protected triple-Weyl nodes with cubic in-plane dispersion. We apply this theory to the 3D ferromagnet HgCr$_2$Se$_4$ and confirm it is a double-Weyl metal protected by $C_4$ symmetry. Furthermore, if the direction…
We report the discovery of a time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal obtained by modifying a model Hamiltonian describing the electronic properties of conventional alkali metals. The artificially generated Weyl semimetal features four isolated Weyl nodes in its bulk band structure and displays characteristic surface Fermi arcs arising from topologically protected surface states. The Weyl semimetal occurs as an intermediate state between a conventional band insulator and a three-dimensional topological insulator. The generation of topological Weyl semimetals from conventional metals opens a new …

Dirac nodal line semimetals (DNLSs) host relativistic quasiparticles in their one-dimensional (1D) Dirac nodal line (DNL) bands that are protected by certain crystalline symmetries. Their novel low-energy fermion quasiparticle excitations and transport properties invite studies of relativistic physics in the solid state where their linearly dispersing Dirac bands cross at continuous lines with four-fold degeneracy. In materials studied up to now, the four-fold degeneracy, however, has been vulnerable to suppression by the ubiquitous spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Despite the current effort to disc…
Dirac semimetal is a class of semi-metallic phase protected by certain types of crystalline symmetries, and its low-energy effective Hamiltonian is described by Dirac equations in three dimensions (3D). Despite of various theoretical studies, theories that describe the topological nature of Dirac semimetals have not been well established. In this work, we define a topological invariant for 3D Dirac semimetals by establishing a mapping between a 3D Dirac semimetal and a topological crystalline insulator in four dimension (4D). We demonstrate this scheme by constructing a tight-binding model for…
Topological states of matter have been a subject of intensive studies in recent years because of their exotic properties such as the topologically protected edge and surface states. The initial studies were exclusively for electron systems. It is now known that topological states can also exist for other particles. Indeed, topologically protected edge states have already been found for phonons and photons. In spite of active searching for topological states in many fields, the studies in magnetism are relatively rare although topological states are apparently important and useful in magnonics.…
Valley-based electronics, known as valleytronics, is one of the keys to break through to a new stage of electronics. The valley degree of freedom is ubiquitous in the honeycomb lattice system. The honeycomb lattice structure of silicon called silicene is an fascinating playground of valleytronics. We investigate topological phases of silicene by introducing different exchange fields on the $A$ and $B$ sites. There emerges a rich variety of topologically protected states each of which has a characteristic spin-valley structure. The single Dirac-cone semimetal is such a state that one gap is clo…
By first-principles calculations, we find that Ba2X(X=Si, Ge) hosts a topological semimetal phase with one nodal ring in the kx=0 plane, which is protected by the glide mirror symmetry when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. The corresponding drumheadlike surface flat band appears on the (100) surface in surface Green function calculation. Furthermore, a topological-semimetal-to-insulator transition (TSMIT) is found. The nodal line semimetal would evolve into topological insulator as SOC is turned on. The topologically protected metallic surface states emerge around the Gamma=0 point, which…
We show by first-principles calculations that the Dirac nodal-line semimetal phase can co-exist with the ferromagnetic order at room temperature in chromium dioxide, a widely used material in magnetic tape applications, under small tensile hydrostatic strains. An ideally flat Dirac nodal ring close to the Fermi energy is placed in the reflection-invariant boundary of the Brillouin zone perpendicular to the magnetic order, and is topologically protected by the unitary mirror symmetry of the magnetic group $D_{4h}(C_{4h})$, which quantizes the corresponding Berry phase into integer multiples of …
We propose that CaP3 family of materials, which include CaP3, CaAs3, SrP3, SrAs3 and BaAs3 can host a three-dimensional topological nodal line semimetal states. Based on first-principle calculations and kp model analysis, we show that a closed topological nodal line exists near the Fermi energy, which is protected by the coexistence of time-reversal and spatial inversion symmetry when the band inversion happens. A drumhead-like surface states are also obtained on the c-direction surface of these materials.
We study the electronic properties of strongly spin-orbit coupled electrons on the elastic pyrochlore lattice. Akin to the Peierls transition in one-dimensional systems, the coupling of the lattice to the electronic degrees of freedom can stabilize a spontaneous deformation of the crystal. This deformation corresponds to a breathing mode, which breaks the inversion symmetry. We find that for intermediate values of the staggered strain, the inversion-symmetry broken phase realizes a topological Weyl semimetal. In the temperature-elasticity phase diagram, the Weyl semimetal shows a reentrant pha…
We proposed that BaHgSn is a Dirac semimetal (DSM) which can host hourglass-like surface states (HSSs) as protected by nonsymmorphic glide symmetry. Compared to KHgSb, an isostructural topological crystalline insulator with the same HSSs, BaHgSn has an additional band inversion at $Γ$ point. This band inversion is induced by the stronger interlayer coupling among Hg-Sn honeycomb layers than that among Hg-Sb-layers in KHgSb, which leads to bulk Dirac nodes in BaHgSn along the layer stacking direction $Γ$-$A$. In addition, the mirror Chern number $C_{i}$ protected by the mirror plane $\overline{…
The realization of Dirac and Weyl physics in solids has made topological materials one of the main focuses of condensed matter physics. Recently, the topic of topological nodal line semimetals, materials in which Dirac or Weyl-like crossings along special lines in momentum space create either a closed ring or line of degeneracies, rather than discrete points, has become a hot topic in topological quantum matter. Here we review the experimentally confirmed and theoretically predicted topological nodal line semimetals, focusing in particular on the symmetry protection mechanisms of the nodal lin…
In topological semimetals, the valence band and conduction band meet at zero-dimensional nodal points or one-dimensional nodal rings, which are protected by band topology and symmetries. In this Rapid Communication, we introduce "nodal-link semimetals", which host linked nodal rings in the Brillouin zone. We put forward a general recipe based on the Hopf map for constructing models of nodal-link semimetal. The consequences of nodal ring linking in the Landau levels and Floquet properties are investigated.
We study the generic band structures of the five-dimensional (5D) Weyl semimetal, in which the band degeneracies are 2D Weyl surfaces in the momentum space, and may have non-trivial linkings with each other if they carry nonzero second Chern numbers. We prove a number of theorems constraining the topological linking configurations of the Weyl surfaces, which can be viewed as a 5D generalization of the celebrated Doubling Theorem for 3D Weyl semimetal. As a direct physical consequence of these constraints, the 5D Weyl semimetal hosts a rich structure of topological boundary states. We show that…
We find that the vortex bound states in superconducting topological semimetals are gapless owing to topological massless excitations in their normal states. We demonstrate this universal result in a variety of semimetals including Dirac and Weyl semimetals, threefold degenerate spin-1 fermions, spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger-Weyl fermion semimetals and other exotic fermion semimetals. The formation of these gapless bound states are closely related to their Andreev specular reflection and propagating Andreev modes in $π$ phase superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. We further de…
We introduce a new type of topological magnon matter: the magnonic pendant to electronic nodal-line semimetals. Magnon spectra of anisotropic pyrochlore ferromagnets feature twofold degeneracies of magnon bands along a closed loop in reciprocal space. These magnon nodal lines are topologically protected by the coexistence of inversion and time-reversal symmetry; they require the absence of spin-orbit interaction (no Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction). We calculate the topological invariants of the nodal lines and show that details of the associated magnon drumhead surface states depend strongl…
We study second-order topological insulators and semimetals characterized by chiral symmetry. We investigate topological phase transitions of a model for construction of the two-dimensional second-order topological insulators protected only by chiral symmetry. By the theory of the phase transitions, we propose a second-order topological semimetal and insulators with flat hinge bands in chiral-symmetric three-dimensional systems. The three-dimensional second-order topological phases can be obtained from the stacked two-dimensional second-order topological insulators with chiral symmetry. Moreov…
We study three-dimensional nodal line semimetals (NLSMs) with magnetic ordering and strong spin-orbit interaction. Two distinct classes of magnetic NLSMs are proposed. The first class is band-inversion NLSM where the accidental line node is induced by band inversion and locally protected by glide mirror plane and the combined time-reversal and inversion symmetries. This can be viewed as a trivial stacking of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetals. The second class is essential NLSM where the nodal features are filling-enforced by specific magnetic symmetry group. We further pro…
We report an observation of a topologically protected transport of surface carriers in a quasi-ballistic Cd3As2 nanowire. The nanowire is thin enough for the spin-textured surface carriers to form 1D subbands, demonstrating conductance oscillations with gate voltage even without magnetic field. The π phase-shift of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations can periodically appear or disappear by tuning gate voltage continuously. Such a π phase shift stemming from the Berry's phase demonstrates the topological nature of surface states. The topologically protected transport of the surface states is further revea…
